So I'm about to rant about developer layoffs.
I do all my little Sonic fanarts and animations in Blender. It's great, it's free. For my day job, though, I animate in Autodesk Maya. If you've ever been interested in learning 3D art/animation, you've probably heard of it. It's the industry standard.
Autodesk just laid off 1,350 of their employees. Over one thousand people lost their jobs, the CEO choosing to take those funds - money that would go to people who need to pay rent and buy food - and invest them into AI.
We already clown on Autodesk for thinking they can get away with a bunch of shit because they're the industry standard. Now the people who were actually making the program workable are gone.
I'm so tired man. It's no secret that game devs have been facing mass firings the past few years, and generative AI is one of the many ways cooperate greed has manifested into that result. And the thing is, you're not even safe from generative AI tools when you HAVE a job. So many of my fellow game devs have been forced by their managers to either use it or to create content for it to scrape. It's a parasite.
Anyway, rant over. Maya cringe, Blender based. It's not only free, but continues to innovate because the team listens to its users. It's a program made and maintained by people.
Here's the article I got this info from, and here's Blender's website, if you want to download it or support the team.

Art evolution !!!!!!
Thank you for the tag @syaolaurant
I tag @stein0806 @accio-bagel @ccelicaa @xmdart and of course anyone and everyone who would like to share their art journey!!
I've been a doodler my whole life. Gained sentience and the first thing I did was draw LOL
Unfortunately I was raised in a typical Strict(Asian) household and mom wasn't very supportive of my silly hobby... so I don't have any childhood art documented 😭
I do remember filling up all my notebooks and textbooks with sketches though!! My family probably thought I ate all the paper as a kid with how much they had to restock my supplies hahaha
Anyways.
Middleschool (2015 - 2016)
My dad bought me an Ipad Mini 2. Life changing. I never looked back.
I still have it with me, though it's probably super dead at this point, but I remember him saying I could try out digital art with it and I almost burst into tears LMAO Soo it's a sentimental item to me. I'll never get rid of it.
I tried all art programs possible back then, Medibang, Procreate, IbisPaint, Autodesk, etc you name it 😼😼
I was also a finger artist for the longest time, that's why I have endless respect for those who still draw with their fingers digitally. You guys have the patience of a god.
Tumblr media
Highschool (2016 - 2018)
Still an Ipad artist, and I was confident enough to post my art on social media. Guess which platform it was ...
It was Wattpad 💀💀💀 i nuked the account because of cringe but I remember getting 100K+ reads on 2 of my books and wow did it do wonders to my ego 😭👍
Tumblr media
A little bit of traditional art here and there too!!!
Tumblr media
College (2019)
A life-altering event happened around this time. I was so depressed and stressed out and busy I had no motivation to draw. I bought my first pen tablet but I didn't touch it for months, my Ipad was also left to gather dust.
I did do a little bit of traditional art however!! Was super into inking around this time 😌
Tumblr media
COVID (2020 - 2021)
Finally picked up my tablet and purchased Clip Studio Paint!! I'd draw everyday!!! That was because... I joined a fandom that was so cursed it revived my passion for art but also made me never want to have an online presence ever again 💀 (mcyttwt)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I also tried out gouache for the first time!! It was so fun xD
Tumblr media
Employed (2021 - now)
Inspiration comes and goes. I only really see drawing as a hobby now, sorta like an escape after spending all my time at work.
Tumblr media
HL definitely keeps me inspired though!!! I've been having so much fun experimenting with all the comics and paintings! I love that there's a story to tell behind every artwork I made xD
Tumblr media
And that's it!!! I wish I had more to share!! I guess that just means I need to work harder and draw more LOLOL
Thank you for reading and supporting my silly hobby, by the way!!! It means so much to me 🫶💜💜💜💜💜💜

I just realized, almost all professional industry-level software has very good native Linux support
Autodesk Maya (used to animate The Amazing Digital Circus, and basically all 3D animated shows)
Toon Boom Harmony (used to animate Rick & Morty, Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel, as well as a lot of 2D Disney productions)
Substance Painter (used for texturing 3D models)
Davinci Resolve (used for colour-grading movies as well as editing)
Even Unreal Engine is starting to get proper Linux support now that its being used by lots of big game studios and the Jetbrains software suite has very good Linux support, so you can easily get a full-time game development job at a studio while only using Linux
.. Notice how that list doesn't include any Adobe products other than Substance, which isn't even really an Adobe product since it was made by Allegorithmic and Adobe just bought them out.
If this doesn't show Adobe isn't a proper professional software suite then idk what does lmao.
Even Studio Ghibli's animation software (Toonz) is available for Linux, and its even open-source now

Autodesk Maya Support Forum Simulator
averagejoe: Hi! I just wanted to know if there is [incredibly basic feature] in Maya. Thanks!
EarlG: Why would you want to do this? You can't do this. You can't ever do this. You should honestly kill yourself. You will never fucking make it in the industry. Fix your workflow.
TheGuy: You can't do this, but here's a simple script I wrote to do this: [incredibly_basic_feature.py, 10000 lines]

Something that's been on my mind for a while is that a lot of artists have been struggling to find programs that work with their budgets. Adobe's prices are... infamous, to say the least, and there seems to be a sharp learning curve for the more affordable options. And if you're like me, you might not feel comfortable with pirating to get an art program that is out of your price range. So here's a list of free art/editing tools. Any options without links are either mobile apps or can only be downloaded on Macs: Options without ads or watermarks:
FireAlpaca (notes: while this is an art program at heart, it can also be used as basic photo editing software once you get the hang of it. There is also a blog dedicated to tutorials on how to use FA in case you get stuck)
Medibang (note: the aforementioned FireAlpaca blog has some information on this software as well)
Krita (note: also available as an app for android and Google devices)
Storyboarder (notes: not to be confused with "Storyboarder.AI". While this program does require your email address before downloading, it is safe to use as far as I know (but please use caution regardless))
Pixilart (notes: link leads to browser version, also available as a mobile app)
Audacity (notes: apparently, the company behind this software, Muse Group, have also created a separate, subscription-based AI-voice program. I am unsure if it uses AI in a way that is generally considered to be ethical, like SynthV does, or if it follows the trends typically expected of those kinds of applications. The reason that I include this information is that I want to give everyone the ability to make an informed decision about whether or not they want to use anything from Muse Group, as I know many users on this site are anti-AI. However, I also know that some of those users wouldn't mind using Audacity since downloading it wouldn't be giving Muse Group monetary support - hence why the program is staying on the list.)
Clipchamp (notes: there are also paid tiers for this program. It is also available in-browser and as an iOS app. Furthermore, please be aware that there are some optional features that use AI)
iMovie (note: also available as a mobile app on iOS devices)
DramaQueen (notes: this is a software used to write scripts for plays, movies, etc. While it does require you to fill out some information before downloading, as far as I am aware, it is safe to use (but as always, use your own discretion))
Options that do have ads, watermarks, or microtransactions
ibisPaint X
Sketchbook (notes: formerly known as "Autodesk Sketchbook". PC and Mac versions do exist, but you have to pay to download them)
Medibang Paint
Capcut (note: has optional AI tools).
Be sure to check what system requirements are necessary for each program, and be aware of their limitations before downloading (for example, many users report Clipchamp has a tendency to crash, while others seem to be able to use it fine). Also, please feel free to add on to this. I know I haven't even scratched the surface here, as I tried to stick to software that I've either heard of extensively or have used personally.

Several Notes!
I'm once more promoting my Ko-Fi! As many who follow me know, I'm an animator and since last year I started doing more 3D animation work.
However, my student license expired and I wanted to keep doing more animations! So, a while ago I created a goal on Kofi to see if I could eventually buy the Maya Autodesk Indie license, but the cost is approximately €400 ;u;
All help would be EXTREMELY helpful right now
Now, you may wonder what do I offer on my Ko-Fi?
