This German Bf109E crash landed at Northdown, Margate, England after being attacked by an RAF Spitfire. Its pilot, OBLT Bartels, though severely wounded survived and was taken prisoner - 24th July 1940

The prototype for the entire Bf / Me 109 series of aircraft. On the ground, chocks in place, and engine running Germany September 16, 1936. Note the wheels are vertical to the ground, not parallel to the struts as most later models. This resulted in a bump in the top skin of the wing. Attaching the wheels parallel eliminated the bump, reduced drag, but gave the 109 tenable ground handling. According to several sources more were lost from ground accidents that in combat
