jeongguk live on tiktok lasted more than 12 minutes, but I think almost no one received notifications? and those who did received it after he started his live. so I think almost nobody managed to record his full live. but this person managed to record 8 minutes of his live: here you go.

The Free Music Friday to beat them all is finally upon us.  Happy Netlabel Day, everybody!
Serious gratitude and respect going out to Creative Commons Community Music Awards co-founder Douglas Whitfield for getting in touch with me last month to have this conversation about CC licenses, netlabels, and so much more.  In part two of the interview, he talks about the CC Listening Parties that he co-hosts on YouTube alongside Donnie Ozone, an event that grew out of the artistic standstill caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  In addition, he shares some ambitious plans for a CC Community Music Hall Of Fame slated to premiere in 2026.
Once again, there's great music to accompany the conversation, including a single from Headsnack that blocSonic is releasing for this year's Netlabel Day.  Other musical selections include the cabaret protest stylings of Carsie Blanton, the jazz meets electronic music musicianship of Revolution Void, the unbeatable hip-hop combination of CM & The Silent Partner, and a gorgeous after hours instrumental from Satori (taken from the new 20th Anniversary Compilation from Upitup Records).
Thank you so much for listening and I hope that you found this interview as informative as I did.  Don't forget to head on over to the Netlabel Day site and discover some great music!
blocSonic artists mentioned in this episode include:
Ant The Symbol Louis Lingg & The Bombs MVMX Pot-C Viktor Van River

Cup of Joe by Pia Marie Buyco BSOT 1
Coffee, oh, where do I even begin? It's like this enchanting friend that's been with me through thick and thin, and honestly, Coffee has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. My journey with this aromatic and comforting beverage began in the early mornings before school. The delightful fragrance of freshly brewed coffee wafted through our home, creating a cozy atmosphere that was unlike any other. I'd observe my parents enjoying their coffee, savoring each sip, and relishing the warmth it brought them. Those moments sparked a sense of warmth and comfort unparalleled by any other daily occurrence and to the times spent in different local coffee shop where I discovered not just different flavors but a whole community and to exploring coffee making myself– coffee has been more than just a drink, as cheesy as it sounds, it's become a part of who I am.
Remember those days before school? I'd watch my parents, totally lost in the satisfaction of each sip, finding warmth in their cups. That warmth? I don’t know how it happened, but it stayed with me, making me feel like everything's alright, even on the craziest days. And as I grew up, so did my relationship with coffee. It's not just about caffeine and it’s magic to keep me awake anymore, it's about finding comfort, sharing laughs with friends over a cup of joe, and taking a moment just for me to reflect on my life.
My cousin played a big part in turning my casual coffee moments into a full-on adventure. When she established her own coffee shop, she brought me with her to coffee classes as well as conferences which deepens my knowledge and appreciation on coffee.
Accompanying my cousin to those coffee classes and conferences was like stepping into a secret world. It wasn't just about learning the technicalities of coffee; it was immersing ourselves in an experience. From the origins of the beans to the intricate dance of brewing methods, each lesson was a journey into the heart of what makes coffee more than just a beverage.
With her guidance, I didn't just play around with brewing but I went on a personal coffee adventure. Fueled by the newfound wisdom we shared and the endless wonders in her shop, I started messing with brewing techniques, coffee blends, and extraction times looking for that perfect shot of espresso. This journey was not to clench thirst anymore, but an art in finding a symphony of flavors, scents, and treasured memories in each beverage made.
Our chats, once filled with everyday banter, took a turn into passionate discussions. We dived into the stories about our experiences and new found knowledge, the magic of roasting, and the deep-rooted
significance of coffee in our life.
With that, Coffee has been my steady companion through life's rollercoaster. It's my go-to when I need a break, a simple act of self-love on the days when everything feels like chaos. And oh, the stories each cup holds. They're like little treasures I keep for the rainy days, invoking smiles and a sweet sense of nostalgia. In those quiet coffee moments, I find a slice of peace.
Especially those rainy days that calls for a steaming cup of French Vanilla with a double shot of espresso, while the heat is no match for a big glass of Coffee-based Frappuccino, and Of course on the regular school days, I'm all about that cup of regular iced americano.
It's there when I need a buddy for reading or writing, a reliable sidekick. Coffee, like life, has this beautiful mix of bitter challenges and sweet, flavorful moments. It's strong when I need strength, and sweet when life's treating me right.
So, here's to those little coffee spoons lined up, each one holding a piece of my life. Here's to the hope that my collection keeps growing because who knows what the next cup might bring? Every sip is like a cheers to the rich, flavorful tapestry of life. As the steam rises, so do the possibilities of each new day, and each new cup of coffee is a little adventure waiting to unfold. Cheers to the joy, the satisfaction, and the pure humanity that a good cup of coffee brings to my everyday life!

Why I Chose OT, and What Made Me Stay
I’ve always been in love with the idea of helping people. As early as 1st grade, my ambition was to become a doctor. It’s really nice saving people’s lives and that was what I wanted my work to be. Visiting hospitals were a lovely experience, I love the white-washed walls, the sanitizer scented hallways, the sudden rush of a bloodied patient during an emergency, and all the staff wearing their professional white coats. I told myself, this is where I wanted to work.
Well, being a doctor was a long process. And my mother really needed the help financially and was expecting to receive that help once I graduate college. So, I settled with something that was my interest and at the same time would give me immediate career options after graduation. That was psychology.
Apart from loving the idea of helping people, I was always curious of the human mind. How does it work? How can someone be like this while someone is the exact opposite? And of course, as a high school aspiring psychologist would say, “I’d like to know what everyone is thinking”.
But psychology, despite being a perfect fit for me, seemed very... boring? I checked the career options, there wasn’t really much (that was my taste, that is). Although it was a good pre-med course, getting a job that I like after this degree was slim to none. I was a very spontaneous person, sometimes when I don’t feel excited from the adrenaline rush I’d just completely do nothing. I loved digging in interesting things and solving mysteries, but at the same time I loved going outside, looking at the big picture. Psychology was somewhat restraining, following a set of rules, spending the work day inside a room. I loved psych but I didn’t love the work-role/setting. So I explored other options. That’s when I stumbled upon OT.
OT, at the time, was only a service our family receives for my youngest brother. He has an autism spectrum disorder, a neurodevelopmental illness that would require life-long services of OT. For some weird reason, I kept on searching about it. I kept on listing down my possible career options in OT more compared to Psychology. (Take note that I didn’t want any other undergrad course, these were the only two options that would soon be my life.) I know so little about it at the time and I didn’t have any other choices. But OT really looked much more interesting than psych. So I went with OT and said, you know what? I’ll just go wherever the wind blows me to. Plus, my mom kinda talked me into it. If I take OT it would mean we can stop paying for OT services for my brother. It was a win-win situation for both me and my mom because I was inclined to this kind of stuff, and it would mean lesser expenses to deal with for my mom.
(a/n if you’re a foreigner, I just want to let you know that in the PH, OT is a bachelor’s degree. After BSOT, there’s a board exam for OT liscensure. At the moment that’s about 4yrs of college, including internship, then the boards after you graduate)
Of course, at first it wasn’t really that attractive. Dealing with noisy children? Carrying heavy patients? Assisting them when they poop? It was a big nuh-uh for me. There were also a lot of existential episodes along the way. Was I sure I could do this? Can my mom really expect something from me after I graduate? Can I really help my brother with ASD? I just wanted to give up. It seemed like a very difficult course after all. But despite all these thoughts, the things that I learn everyday at college was what made me stay.
I learned that I could help all types of people. Disability-related or not, an OT’s role was to help. I also learned that we don’t just help them move their limbs, we target what the meaningful activities are for them. So if a mother was involved in a car accident that severed her arms, and can’t anymore manipulate small ingredients to cook for her family, she would say she’d want to learn how to cook again. Imagine being part of someone’s growth? It would be such an honor and privilege. OT’s also deal with a lot of mental disabilities. As difficult as it was, I always became giddy whenever our psychiatric disabilities subject was next. DSM-5 and I have a love-hate relationship at the moment.
It was the perfect fit for me. It involves a lot of communication skills, a lot of critical thinking, a lot of spontaneous cases and exciting situations, I can still work in my dream job-setting, I can still study the way a human brain works, and most importantly, I could help people.
Yeah there’s a lot of ugly parts in OT, but what made me stay was the purpose of it all, to help people.

7.  Get Up Stand Up (Featuring Brother Ali) by Public Enemy [blocSonic] (CC-BY-NC 3.0)
Looking back over the last ten shows for the BSOTS podcast feed, eight of them featured at least one Creative Commons licensed tune.  Even after more than 15 years of podcasting, the CC music landscape still feels like largely uncharted territory for me, which is probably why I've felt the need to dig through the online crates to see what I can find.  In addition, I've been listening to prior BSOTS episodes from over a decade ago, revisiting the music that I have played on the show and taking note of the songs that still sound great to me so that I can reintroduce them on future episodes.  This show marks Camp Lo-Fi's long overdue return to the feed and is where my CC music appreciation agenda kicks into high gear.  The seven songs featured are a mix of tunes from prior BSOTS episodes alongside selections receiving their first spins, cutting across genre and released between 2009 and 2023.
The blocSonic netlabel opened my eyes and ears to the world of CC licensed music.  It was through their netBloc series of compilations that I was introduced to a network of artists and online labels, most of it (if not all) available to freely download and share.  The blocSonic offerings in this episode are courtesy of last year's album from Wals and a stellar cut from Public Enemy (as heard on netBloc vol. 44), featuring the always on-point lyricism of Chuck D and special guest Brother Ali.  Another notable hip-hop moment is "Zo0o0o0p!!!," the brief but absolutely banging cut from Kidkanevil featuring Oddisee, a ridiculously talented emcee and producer whose music I've been championing on this show for well over a decade.  Isak Gaines moves us into the unpredictable and experimental side of jazz with "Dance Of Contradictions," a song that sonically lives up to its title.  A bouncy yet broken groove for the first half of the song gives way to a beatless abyss of sound effects and saxophone screeches before bringing the hammer down with a distorted bass line and a defiant horn section.
Niki J Crawford's "Ridiculous Love" was an unexpected surprise that I stumbled upon over on Jamendo, a sultry soul offering made all the more seductive with the wetSkin Hot Summer ReMix.  It's percussion heavy with a slight Brazilian influence and a breezy shuffle topped with acoustic guitar strums and Niki's powerhouse vocals.  Yoko Absorbing's "Old Futuro Blues" is a short, sweet, and somewhat off-kilter cut that lives in repeated moments of loops, locked grooves, and live instrumentation.  And there's probably no better example of the sonic treasures waiting to be discovered over at the Free Music Archive than live recordings of legendary poet Nikki Giovanni.  "In The Spirit Of Martin" is her ode to not only the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but to the struggle and perseverance of the Civil Rights movement as a whole.
If you're Creative Commons curious but have been unsure where to start looking, hopefully episodes like these can demystify this world of music one song at a time.  Thank you so much for listening.

Does he seem to have the playfulness back? Or is there something that still seems missing? Compared to 2017 he seems a bit better, but there still seems to be a significant something missing compared to his 2013 Comic Con appearance!
I think so, but I don’t think he’ll ever be as relaxed and open as he was BSoT.
