sum: sam is home. although times have changed, his sister’s intentions for him have not. sarah would love for her brother to settle down, and she knows the perfect person to make him do it. but when sam gets caught up with work, he misses the date sarah has set up for him.
words: 2.3K
Tumblr media
It’s funny how the human mind works.
How easily certain moments can slip through its cracks. Names, dates, songs, conversations, faces lost to the wind, never to be remembered again. In the same turn, how those same things can be retained, recited down to the last detail in perfection.
Sam Wilson has seen enough in his lifetime--more than most men. No one could condemn him for forgetting the smallest of details from time to time. Sometimes he does. He is human. But, strangely, he can never forget a single detail when it comes to you.
Sam can still remember the first time he saw you.
The coffee-colored, cardboard box you carried in your arms--'living room' written across the front panel in your mother’s flawless penmanship. The dark curls pineappled to rest atop the crown of your head--a last-ditch attempt of fighting the Louisiana heat. The oversized Purple Rain t-shirt faded from too many runs through the wash. The round, black sunglasses sliding down the brim of your nose as you paused to take note of the boy watching you from his front window. Down to the scuffed, worn high tops that could barely pass for white.
He even remembers the soft smile you gave him once he froze--too embarrassed to move from the window after being caught watching you for the third time--before turning to lug the box up the steps of your front porch.
It was the summer of ‘94, and Sam Wilson was running late. He was expected to be at the docks assisting his father. Instead, he was peeping around his mother’s powder blue curtains, attempting to score glimpses of his new neighbors. Primarily their teenage daughter.
It’s not every day that Delacroix welcomes a new resident--let alone an entire family. Later that night, over dinner, his mother shared that you were entering your senior year--same as him.
He still remembers the knotting of his stomach. The strange and unusual experience of being tongue-tied when he’d tripped over his name--his name for god’s sake--that morning, you opened your front door to find him and Sarah on the other side. The kindness of your dark brown eyes as they met his, the soft giggle you released as you ignored his sputtering to accept the chocolate chip cookies his mother sent her children to deliver.
He also remembers the vision of you in your wedding dress. The smile he had to keep plastered on his face the night he learned his skepticism, surrounding death by broken heart, faded. You’ve never felt pain until you’ve seen the woman you love marry another man.
Sam must admit. When he returned, he expected--hoped--that those feelings would have disappeared. That they would have been erased from his life. Only, the moment he returned home, Sam discovered those feelings remained--were stronger even.
Five years later, he found you in the same house. Your parents no lived there. After their return from the blip, they packed up their things. Suddenly, tackling their bucket list was their main priority. You still had your husband’s last name but no husband. He was gone, lost to a younger woman.
Five years later, and Sam Wilson finds himself still frozen by the sight of you.
The long-sleeved maroon shirt he’s tugged on is not his number one choice. It’s all he had in his bag. The time on his watch had forced him into an ultimatum. Either run home, shower, and change into the outfit Sarah helped him pick out and risk being five hours late. Or head straight to your house, and risk being four hours and forty-five minutes late.
Sam opted for the latter.
Flowers in hand, he stands in the gateway of your backyard. His eyes admire the glow of the string lights against your skin. The yard has been transformed. Several tables and chairs, enough to host the entire neighborhood, squeezed into its space. Filled with music and laughter a few hours before the backyard is now quiet. Only the sounds of crickets, and the rustle of the trash bag in your hand, can be heard over the racing of Sam’s heart.
“Hey.” Sam takes a step forward, clearing his throat. “Sorry, I’m late.”
“Late is an understatement.” You don’t bother looking up from the plates stacked in your hands. Dumping them into the black trash bag, you move towards the next table. “You missed the entire party.”
Tumblr media
After dumping the trash, you realize that Sam is no longer in the backyard. You find him in the kitchen.
“What are you doing?” You ask, coming to a stop in the doorway.
Sam glances up from the soap-covered glass in his hands. “Helping you clean up.”
You glance around the kitchen, only to find that he’s managed to wash nearly the entire stack of dishes you’ve been dreading the entire night.
“I didn’t realize you still did stuff like this,” you tease. “What with you running off to save the world. Figured you’d just hire someone to do it for you.”
“Guess it’s a good thing I got you to keep me humble,” he winks.
Tumblr media
Sam dries his hands with the bumblebee printed hand towel, a satisfied grin on his lips as he takes in the spotless kitchen. He’s too busy admiring his handiwork to realize you’re standing alongside him.
He turns, the snarky comment he’s prepared lost in his throat as he takes you in.
You can’t deny him a smile as you watch his eyes widen, a boyish grin brightening his face as he takes in the plate you’re holding. On it rests a single slice of homemade apple pie, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and perfectly drizzled caramel.
“I think you’ve earned this.”
“You saved me a piece?”
“No,” you sigh, allowing your eyes to roll. “I actually saved it for me. But if I have to look at your pathetic attempt at puppy dog eyes one more second--”
“You were hoping I’d show up.” The grin on Sam’s face has morphed into a trademark smirk, the sight pulling a giggle from your lips. “You and I both know you don’t save, or share your pie with just anyone.”
Sam’s observation is spot on.
You don’t share your pie--or food, for that matter--with just anyone. In the chaos of hosting the neighborhood, you didn’t have a moment to stop and enjoy your own party. Let alone a slice of the apple pies you’d spent the previous night preparing.
Apple pies--specifically yours--were Sam Wilson’s true weakness.
The moment he sees you lugging home a bag full of granny smith and macintosh apples, he’s on full helicopter mode. You’re not sure how he knows, but he’s got a radar. One that somehow allows him to prophesize the exact moment the pies are out of the oven and set aside to cool.
He’ll show up, stopping by to say hi, or to see if you still need the drainpipe your ex-husband never got around to working on fixed, or to “pass along a message” from Sarah--as though your best friend couldn’t pick up the phone and call. Whatever the excuse Sam Wilson always manages to be the one to get the first slice of your apple pie. He’s smart enough to know that once the children of the neighborhood catch a whiff, they’ll show up on your doorstep. And as much as he loves the kids--Sam isn’t letting them steal his pie.
Sam’s words come out muffled through a mouthful of apples and crust. “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Y/N. You should sell these. You'd make a killing.”
“And I’ve already told you, it’s just for fun,” you dismiss his advice, taking another spoonful of ice cream. “Besides, what do you expect me to do? Quit my good paying--although painstakingly boring--job in the hopes that enough people will like my baking to keep me afloat?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying,” Sam nods, a smile growing as he watches your eyes roll.
It’s a conversation the two of you have had for years. Here is the rundown of how it plays out--every single time.
Sam: suggests that you finally open up the bakery you’ve been talking about since your teenage years.
You: dismiss his words of advice, reminding Sam that most teenage dreams are foolish.
Sam: ends the conversation with, “I’d show up every day for a piece.”
You: spend the rest of the night wondering if he’s right, about taking the chance, only to psych yourself out before going to bed.
“I’m just saying,” Sam sighs, sliding the plate to the side. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned. Life is going to pass you by, regardless, no matter what you do. If you give it a shot, and it fails--which is never going to happen--your life isn’t going to end.”
You glance up from the table, a tiny smile on your lips as you take in his soft smile.
“Maybe you’re right,” you shrug. “If all else fails, I’ll just tell everyone it’s the Falcon’s favorite pie--”
“You’ll have people flooding in from across the country.”
“It’s settled,” you giggle. “I’m using you in my business model.”
“Hey,” Sam chuckles. “As long as I get a cut, I’m not complaining.”
A silence falls over the tiny kitchen as your gaze drops from his.
Sam lightly raps his knuckles against the table before pushing his chair back.
“Uh—I should probably head out. You’re probably tired. I just wanted to come by and apologize...again.”
“Wow,” the light laugh you release halts Sam’s act of standing up. “The second you get what you came for you hit the ground running?”
The response is automatic. The chance to tease him is one you never pass up.
Sam’s brow raises as he takes in your smile.
“That’s not what I came for,” he admits.
“What did you come for then?”
“To ask you over to my place for breakfast tomorrow.”
The proposition hangs in the air, Sam nearly squirming in his seat as you take your time studying his gaze. You let out a sigh, your shoulders shrugging lightly, once you finally speak.
“I don’t know, Sam” You shake your head. Picking up the plate, you stand and cross the kitchen to the sink. “You just have so many responsibilities, nowadays, running around trying to save the world--”
“I’m not going anywhere tonight,” he’s quick with the reassurance. “Or any day, until we get through that date you promised me.”
You turn to face him, arms crossing over your chest as he comes to a stop before you.
“Say I show up. You have to promise me something.”
“Whatever you want.”
He knows that promise can end up being a slippery slope, depending on how hard you’re willing to make him work for it.
“If something comes up, in the future, you call me. And you tell me exactly why you can’t be here. Nobody gets to stand me up. Not the Falcon. And sure as hell, not Sam Wilson. Understood?”
Sam’s eyes drop to your interlaced fingers, a soft chuckle escaping his lips as he gives your hand a gentle squeeze.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Good.” Standing on your toes, you place a kiss against his cheek. “Now, go get some sleep. You’re making me breakfast in the morning. I’m expecting waffles, bacon, freshly squeezed O.J.--the works.”

Noses In Roses (John Wick x Reader) Pt. 4.5
Tumblr media
A/N: well hi! I was sad so I did some writing y'all!!!! wowwww abby actually wrote something!!!! it's a miracle!!!!
Words: 2.8k (this is longer than I meant for it to be)
Warnings: none, good ole family fluff!
June 27th, 4:03PM
The afternoon summer sun poured into the kitchen, illuminating the space in a golden haze. Classic rock played over the small portable speaker John had gotten you last Christmas as your hands dug into some fresh bread dough; kneading it gently. Patterned footsteps and cheerful giggles of two little bodies could be heard from the backyard, signalling that your kids were having fun.
It’s been three and a half years since Heather was born. Since then, a few things have changed. First, you and John are married now. He proposed shortly after Heather turned seven months old, and you were joined in holy matrimony at the courthouse the following Monday. Of course, you couldn’t find a sitter for the occasion so James sat quietly playing his Gameboy while Heather slept in her car seat. Although once the kids were put to bed, you and John did celebrate that night.
Second, you adopted James. Over the course of your relationship, John had always made little comments about how much James loves you and sees you as a mother. And after Heather was born, the boy actually started to call you ‘mom’. It took a few years for everything to fall in place, but, on your birthday last year, John and James surprised you with the adoption certificate, proving that you are now the legal parent to your eldest. You were a blubbery, lovey, emotional mess for a couple days afterwards.
And the third thing to mention, you’re pregnant again; a couple days away from seven months. After careful consideration regarding both yours and John’s ages, the two of you decided to have one more baby. You wanted a sibling closer in age to Heather, that way she’d have someone to grow up with. Yes, James will always be there, but he’s six years older than her. What nine-year-old wants their three-year-old baby sister hanging around?
“Mommy!” Heather’s small voice hollered from the backyard; breaking your thought train. Hurriedly wiping the dough from your hands, you made your way to the sliding door.
“Yes?” You answered, stepping outside. The afternoon heat hit you immediately, but you pushed it aside. Resting a hand on your belly and furrowing your brows, you scanned the yard not immediately seeing your children.
“Where are you two?” You then yelled.
“Mom, you’ll never believe what we found!” James spoke, rounding the corner from the side of the house. He held a mischievous grin; a grin you’ve seen plenty of times. Whatever he’s about to show you probably isn’t going to end well.
“If it’s another gross bug, James, I swear-” You started, but the boy cut you off.
“It’s not! I promise! You’ll like this surprise, mom.” James grabbed your hand as he spoke, pulling you towards the side of the house he’d appeared from.
“Mhm, just like how Dad and I liked our ‘pond’?” You spoke sarcastically. When Heather was in her ‘terrible twos’ phase, the two of them got into the most trouble; Heather being the instigator, and James gas lighting her. One afternoon, they had filled the tub in yours and John’s bathroom with dirt, twigs, rocks, and even a handful of worms, before proceeding to fill the tub until it overflowed and ruined the tile and rugs. Of course, you had fallen asleep on the couch from pure parental exhaustion and didn't discover the scene until John came home an hour later.
“That was almost two years ago mom, you’re going to have to let it go.” James spoke with faux sincerity, finally rounding the corner. You narrowed your eyes at him, ready to retaliate, however a very obvious bark caught your attention.
“Ta-Da!” Heather cheesed, grinning from ear to ear. Laying next to your daughter in the grass was a dog; A chocolate labradoodle to be exact.
“Oh my god- How- Whose- What?” You were stuttering over your words, too shocked to form a complete sentence. The dog perked it’s head up at your voice, tail wagging as the tongue hung out from its mouth.
“We found it!” James reassured, letting go of your hand and walking over to where they sat. Kneeling in the grass, your son began to pet the dog. It seemed to like the kids, not putting up a fuss wherever they touched it.
“Is this why you’ve been so quiet?” You pursed your lips, placing a hand over your temple and rubbing to ease the oncoming headache. The two of them chorused cheerful answers, even prompting the dog to let out a soft bark.
“Do you think dad will let us keep it?” James then asked, sadness clearly lacing his tone. You stepped closer to the dog, trying to form some sort of answer; but couldn’t think of one. The kids have been begging for a pet, ever since Heather was old enough to speak. You and John have been avoiding it, knowing you’d rather have your third baby then introduce a dog. But, I guess the universe had other plans for your little family.
“We’ll just have to see when he gets home.” You responded finally, kneeling next to the pet with a huff. You quickly looked over the animal, checking for a collar or any type of tags. It looked skinny as well, like it is malnourished and has been wandering for a bit; picking up a spare meal here and there.
“We found it in the field!” Heather cheerfully explained, pointing towards the open field behind your fenced yard. When John purchased this home, he also purchased the land behind him so no further development could be made. Living in New Jersey, it always baffled you how he’d managed to pull that off.
“Poor thing.” You spoke, a frown growing across your face. The animal gently lift its head from laying to look up at you. His tongue drooped from its mouth as it panted, the heat and fluffy hair not helping the fact.
“Is it a boy or a girl, mommy?” Heather then asked, lovingly grabbing its face and petting. You gently lifted the dog's leg to check before answering your daughter.
“It’s a… Boy.”
“Can we name him Rex? Like a T-Rex?” James mused, eagerly bouncing where he sat. You chuckled at his enthusiasm, however Heather was quick to join the decision making.
“No! I want Mr. Fluffy!”
“How about we choose names later, once Dad gets home.” You interjected yourself before a full fight was to break out. The two kids seemed in agreement, nodding quietly, letting the scuffle fade away.
“Let’s make sure he gets some food and water in his tummy.” You smiled towards your kids and the dog. The two of them nodded eagerly, probably also wanting a snack themselves. Using the side of the house for balance, you stood back up, resting a hand on your bump once again. James and Heather also stood, prompting the dog to jump up as well.
“Mommy, will the dog meet our new baby?” Heather's soft voice spoke. Her small fingers wrapped themselves around your own as the four of you made your way back into the house. Ever since you got pregnant, Heather has been fascinated. Her favorite thing is to feel the baby move and kick, and some days, she's even fallen asleep cuddling up to your belly.
“I'm sure he will, baby.” You smiled down at your daughter, ruffling her messy hair. She gave you a cheesy smile in return, showing her crooked baby-teeth.
Once inside, the dog seemed slightly intimidated by the new environment, however the comforting presence of the kids seemed to be helping. Firstly, you put your unfinished bread dough back into the fridge and turned off the radio before grabbing a spare bowl and filling it with water. James was quick to help, searching the pantry and fridge before pulling out the sandwich meat.
Setting down the bowl, you gently coaxed the dog over. He sniffed around the bowl before eagerly lapping up the water; spilling it all over onto the floor. Heather's giggle-fueled reaction only added to the silly situation. James gently set down a plate containing a few slices of the sandwich meat next to the water bowl. The dog sniffed the plate as well before realizing it was food and swiftly munched down the meat in a few bites.
The three of you hung around by the dog for a few moments before the sound of the garage door opening signaled that John is home. The familiar engine hum of his vintage vehicle echoed loudly before it was promptly cut off, and a few moments later the door to the garage swung open.
“I’m home!” The man called out, hanging his keys.
“Daddy!” Heather yelped, jumping off of a seat at the table and rushing over to her father. John bent down onto one knee, eagerly catching the little girl into his arms.
John, despite your wishes, still works as an assassin. When Heather turned one and things became more manageable, he insisted on going back. Money was the main reasoning, claiming the family will need more income with a new baby. You didn't agree, but went along with it anyways. John is going to do as he pleases anyways; you learned that early on.
“We found a dog!” James gushed, petting the animals head softly. Setting Heather back down, John's dark eyes met those of the dog, laying on the floor next to the food and water. The dog's tail began wagging at the interaction, and he popped his head up.
“How?” John asked, dropping the overnight bag on his shoulder and stepping over to the pet. You, James and Heather all looked at each other, hopeful for a positive reaction. Your husband gently knelt down, admiring the dog; his large hands then gently began to pet the animal.
“Behind the fence in the field, he was stuck.” James answered, “I had to jump it. I got a hole in my shorts because of it.” He added, standing up and showing off the small hole. Both you and John made eye contact at his statement, parental alarms blaring over the fact your son could jump the fence; nevermind the hole in his clothes. James is growing like a weed anyways, you buy him new jeans at least twice a month.
“Does he have a name?” John then asked, giving the dog a few more pets before standing back up.
“No, we were waiting for your input.” You smiled while answering your husband, waddling over to the table and taking a seat. Heather and James still sat around the dog, showering it with affection. John nodded, grabbing the bag he dropped and moving it out of the doorway.
“I want to name him Rex, and Heather wants to name him Mr. Fluffy. Mom didn't give an option, so, it's up to you, dad.” James explained, looking up towards his father. John nodded silently, joining you over by the kitchen table.
“Dog.” The man answered, looking towards his children. They sat quietly before looking between each other, almost having a silent conversation. The dog even let out a sigh, as though he too hated the name.
“That’s stupid.” James finally deadpanned, looking back towards John. You had to stifle a laugh, covering your mouth with your hand. James, as you've come to learn, is basically a copy and paste of his father. He's strong-willed, confident and extremely dry-humored. Sometimes it's humorous, and other times it can be very frustrating.
“Well, maybe Mom should take part in the decision.” John then spoke, his hand moving to rest on your shoulder. You scoffed and leaned away from his touch, annoyed that your neutral ground has been destroyed. The mischievous smile that crossed your husband's face said all that it needed.
“Well, if you must have my input, I've always liked the name Winston.” You then spoke, looking between your family. James and Heather looked at each other again, having another silent conversation. The dog’s head shot up at the mention, eagerly panting.
“We like it.” Heather finally chimed in, a wide smile covering her cheeks. “Mr. Winston Wick.”
“Can we get toys for him?” James added, enthusiastically standing up, which also promoted Heather and Winston to get up as well. The pair jumped into an excited babble, Winston panting cheerfully below them.
“I think there's an old tennis ball in the backyard, if you want to go play right now?” You cut the two of them off, gesturing to the sliding glass door. Nodding, they quickly took off with the dog close behind. With a sigh, you looked up to your husband who was still hovering over your shoulder.
“I can't believe you let them keep the dog.” The humor that laced your tone caused your husband to let out a soft chuckle.
“I know we wanted to wait,” John began, pulling out the chair next to yours and sitting, “But the look on their hopeful faces? How could I say no?”
“A dog will be nice, though. Sometimes I get lonely when you leave.” You spoke, adjusting so you were comfortable and could face him better. Resting a hand on your bump, you let out a soft sigh.
“I know, I’m sorry.” John's response wasn't what you really wanted to hear. You wished he’d retire and stay home to help with raising the family. And with the third baby on the way, while you are very excited, you're also scared. The same fear you held while pregnant with Heather and after discovering his line of work; what if you lose John?
“James seems to have really bonded with the dog. God knows how long they've been hiding it from us.” You changed the subject, turning to face your husband better. Scanning the side of his face, you could see a small cut donning his cheek bone. Must've gotten that from his most recent job.
“It’ll be good for him, teach him some responsibility.” John chimed. His large hand gently placed itself on your bump, thumb rubbing circles. The baby kicked at the feeling; always getting extra jumpy and excited when John touches you. This pregnancy, you wanted to keep the gender a surprise. Honestly, you weren't hoping for a girl or boy; just as long as the baby is healthy. Being an ‘older’ mom, the risk of complications are higher. So far, however, it's been easy. In fact, this pregnancy has been easier than Heather was.
“He's quite responsible already. He basically helped me raise Heather on the days you were gone.” You answered, placing your smaller hand atop John’s. “He’s such a brilliant boy. I can't believe he’s going into the fifth grade this fall.”
“If you keep reminiscing, you're going to cry Darling.” John’s voice gently spoke. You couldn't help but chuckle and sniffle down some tears that threatened to escape.
“Sorry,” You humored, standing up from the table and grabbing a tissue. “But, he’s basically become the man of the house, though. He helps with chores, and even learned how to mow the grass so I wouldn't have to.”
“We can hire a Maid and Gardener.” John deadpanned, standing up from the table and stepping over to you.
“With your career, I don't trust a lot of people. Aurelio is the only one allowed past the driveway.” You didn't mean for your words to come out harsh, but they did. John knows how you feel about his job, especially now that your kids are the perfect ‘kidnap and hold for ransom’ age. You don't even want to be reminded of when Helen kidnapped James.
The man didn't respond, instead his face told all that it needed. He was upset, understandably, but he knows and understands why you lashed out. It's not easy trying to keep your family a secret from your job and vice versa. Especially when your job is highly dangerous and deals with world class criminals.
“I’m sorry, you just got home. Let's not argue.” You sighed, stepping up to your husband. Grabbing his hand, you pulled yourselves as close as your bump would allow. John complied, placing his hands on your sides to hold you tighter.
“No, you're rightfully upset.” The man's voice was soft, almost a whisper. He gently kissed the top of your head before your lips met. Running your hands up his suited chest, a quiet sigh of relief escaped your lips as the kiss broke. The two of you rested your foreheads together, a silent gesture of romance. Your relationship is strong; the love you hold for John trumps your hate of his profession. All that matters is when he comes home and leaves the harsh reality of work behind, he’s greeted with a happy home and family.
“I love you, Mr. Wick.” You spoke gently, running your fingers through his long hair. A small smile overtook his face as he answered.
“I love you too, Mrs. Wick.”

Moonshine - A Beetlejuice Fanfiction 12
Warning: swearing, several mentions of murder, scaring people out of their pants, Beej being a creep, shotgun use, abusive ex.
Tumblr media
The ground was shaking, the house was somehow glitching and green smoke filled the living room. The girls heard a loud, croaky, devilish laugh right before the room turned completely dark. Even the lightning stopped. Sofía held Rei close in fear, while Ari was looking around with lustruous eyes. All of a sudden, a gravelly voice filled the air.
- Welcome, welcome, welcome, lovely ladies! - a weirdly handsome, husky man with fluffy hair, which went from black roots to glowing, bright green tops and stubble colored the same way stood on the dining table. He wore a dirty striped suit with a stripey shirt; a green tie, which had several spots of moss on it; black suspenders; and dirty black leather shoes with stacked heels. He was grinning, showing his sharp double canines; his golden, kind of catlike eyes were shining in excitement. Some random spots of dirt and maybe rotting patterned his face. He put a spotlight on himself, and as he threw his hands above his head, a couple of red neon lights lighted up around him. Some of them were arrows, pointing at him, some of them were captions saying "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice". - Can all of you see me now?
- SHIT HE'S REAL. - screamed Rei.
- Wow. - gasped Ari right before the man jumped down from the table. He landed right in front of her. He locked his gaze in hers and offered her a hand. - You look WAY better than I imagined, based on the voice. - she put her palm in his. - Not so dead... - Beetlejuice lifted Ari up from the ground and as he did, he locked her in his arms, swooped her off her feet and planted a kiss on her lips. Which was followed by a bitchslap from the wide-eyed breather girl. Beetlejuice let Ari go, still smiling like an idiot.
- Sorry, sorry, I got overjoyed, I just had to, I couldn't help myself. Am I overstepping my bounds? - Ari nodded and smiled while she wiped her lips. This man can't be real. Crazy motherfucker is worse than I imagined. - It's just that this whole thing is so beautiful! - his voice got emotional and he put his hands on his chest, where Ari imagined his heart would've been. - You called me! You didn't have to, but you called me!
- The fuck you mean she didn't had to? - asked Rei who let go of Sofía to inspect the demon more closely. Beetlejuice raised an eyebrow, pulled a grimace, snapped his fingers and a couple pieces of furniture appeared before the winter garden's door, making a barricade.
- Solves all ya problems. - he turned back to Ari. - NOW! I'm gonna go, kill those suckers, have some fun, earn some screams, and leave chaos in my wake!
- Yes, good, get on it! - stated Ari, held Beetlejuice's wide shoulders, and turned him around to face the backdoor. - Get'em, tiger. - Sofía jumped in front of them, making Beetlejuice almost fall over.
- Wait, you really want him to do that?!? - Ari gestured with her hand and raised her eyebrows.
- Duuuh, I didn't summon him to play fucking yahtzee! - BJ chuckled and put his elbow on Ari's shoulder.
- I like your jokes but I like hu-mor. - he cooed with a tilted head and a cheesy smile. Ari flashed a kind of annoyed look at him and blinked fast.
- Later, Beetlejuice, later, please, we have so much shit to do and haunt and kill now.
- You can't do that! - said Sofía, still standing before Ari and BJ. - It's not just morally wrong, but don't ya think, Ariadné dearest, that if a bunch of guys get brutally murdered here, we'll have to bury them and having a shitton of mounds in our backyard would raise suspicion? AND since we have such a bad luck, I'm pretty sure the police would find the bodies somehow. - Beetlejuice layed back to the wall, inspecting his dirty black nails, sighing. There's so much trouble with living folks, they always find somethin' to ruin the fun. It's easier with dead guys, you have some problems with them, you just throw 'em to a sandworm and your problems are solved! WAIT...
- Hey, guys, sorry to barge in, but I just wanna state that if you push someone, that’s bullying, if you kill someone, that’s murder, sure, but if there is no evidence and nobody sees it... - he shrugged. - ...it’s a simple accident. - he showed a toothy grin, lightning flashing on his sharp double canines. - And those goddamn sandworms could swallow anyone alive.
- What's a sandworm? - asked Ari excitedly. BJ shrugged.
- Oh ya know, nothing much, just 10-meters-tall two-headed snakes with a killer appetite. If they eat someone, they automatically get deported to the Netherworld, or I dunno how ya folks call it, Purgatory. No problem with the body, or the ghost. - Ari smiled widely and launched herself at Beetlejuice. She hugged his neck tightly.
- YOU ARE A GENIUS! - Beetlejuice just stood still, not knowing what to do with the sudden hug.
- Well, being dead has its perks. - he said with a small, weird laugh. Ari made a disgusted face and quickly let go.
- Ew, you smell like rotten meat. Gross.
- Aww thanks babe! - ha cooed and put his weight from one leg to another like a little kid.
Rei cleared her throat.
- Isn't that swallowing thing still murder though? - Beetlejuice appeared right behind her out of thin air.
- Jesus Christ, Rei, you sexy son of a bitch, grow up! - he said and pinched her booty, then quickly reappeared on the dining table. - Please, sweethearts, shut up already! - he said in a nagging manner. - I'm ready for some people to die! Let me have my fun, you guys are like a snorefest! - the knocking started again, since the bad guys on the other side of the door realized they can't break it.
- Who's there with ya honey? - asked Matt, after hearing BJ talk. - Did... DID YOU HOOK UP WITH SOMEONE?! I AM ALL THAT YOU NEED! ARIADNÉ, DON'T MAKE ME COME IN THERE!!! - BJ pointed at the door.
- See, the stupid motherfucker's even asking for it!
The girls looked at each other. Rei was the first to talk.
- Well, I have a very little patience for stupidity. I say let's get rid of these jerks. - Sofía rolled her eyes and tried to say something but Beetlejuice quickly pointed at her and a metal plate appeared on her lips, making her unable to talk. She flashed an angry look at the demon. But he just shrugged with a wicked smile.
- Silence gives consent.
- There's only one more thing! - stated Rei, which made Beetlejuice do a huge eyeroll.
- WHATTTT.
- Kill only Matt. His henchmen don't deserve death, I mean at least I think so. - she said while looking at Ari. She nodded with pouted lips. - Only scare them. If you can do that. - Beetlejuice held his chest and dramatically made the expression of fainting.
- If I can do that?! What do ya think, what am I, a newbie? - he jumped off the table, booping Rei's nose. - Babes, I've been scaring for like a millennia. I'm the bio-exorcist of the Netherworld, giving houses enemas and shit. - he turned away. - Don't underestimate my power cause I'll be offended! - Ari laughed, jumped next to Beetlejuice who hold his arm out, so she locked arms with him. He stared deeply into her widely opened, emerald green eyes. - So tell me, little wolf, do you want to punish those who have wronged you? - he said in an arousing tone. His gravelly voice made Ari slightly shiver and gulp.
- Y-yes...
- Alright ladies, then let's turn up the juice and see what shakes loose!
With a snap of the fingers, all 4 of them teleported to the kitchen. The metal plate from Sofía's mouth disappeared, which made her kind of relieved, but still left her grouching.
- You snake-ass bitches don't respect the Sister Code... - she grumbled.
- Hey, d'ya want me to put the plate back on your slutty mouth, woman?! - asked Beetlejuice in a sharp tone. Sofía crossed her arms before her chest.
- ...I hate you. - Beetlejuice nodded then turned back to Ari with a devilish smile. His eyes were literally glowing at this point, and maybe he had sharper and a bit more teeth than an average human would have.
- Okay, so first thing first, I'm invoking the "No Judgement” clause of our friendship.
- What? Why? - asked Ari. Beetlejuice layed back to the middle kitchen counter and fixed his jacket. He flashed his glowing, hungry eyes at Ari and winked.
- Cause Imma get a little nasty... - Beetlejuice was interrupted by an angry scream. Matthias was banging on the door so loud at this point that Rei was sure he already broke some of his fingers.
- OPEN UP OR I'LL SHOOT THIS FUCKIN DOOR OPEN! - Ari's lower lip juddered at the sudden shouting. She cupped Beetlejuice's chubby face in her palms, took a deep breath and with heated determination in her eyes she said:
- Make him piss his pants.
- Your wish is my command, babes.
- I'M GONNA COUNT TO THREE! - Beetlejuice looked at the door and snapped his fingers. - ONE! - the furniture floated back to their original places. - TWO! - BJ let out a voiceless laugh as he wiggled his fingers and made the whole house pitch black. - FUCK IT! - and with that, right after the sound of barrel-loading a shotgun, the door of the winter garden opened with a creek.
One of the most sobering things in the world must be to experience a classical horror cliché in a house that is rumored to be haunted. There were 5 men standing behind Matt; he met them all earlier that night at a shitty pub, and they were all horny and drunk enough for Matthias to convince them easily to follow him and break into the house of his ex-girlfriend. Stupid boys thought that they'll get some easy pussy that night. Then they saw the house and all of them started to get second thoughts... But they quickly brushed them off, those rumors were just to scare the little townsfolk.
As soon as the door opened, Matt's henchmen looked at each other. Matthias hastily stepped into the house and looked back at the guys. They were stalling and shared concerned looks. Beetlejuice snapped his fingers and appeared with the girls hidden behind one of the huge cupboards of the winter garden. He leaned closer to Ari and whispered:
- Watch. This. - he pointed at one of Ari's big oleanders and started to wiggle his fingers. The plant started to grow, and as it got bigger and bigger, it became an anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado. It had a huge, nasty-looking pod which had shark-like teeth. Ari gasped and smiled widely. She always wanted to see this plant in real life. The men didn't notice the plant first, but then one of them started to sniff the air, which was filled with the smell of blood now, and turned around. As soon as he spotted the plant, he screamed like a girl. Beetlejuice opened his mouth in awe and circled his nipples.
- Oh how I missed that sound... - he purred. Ari laughed.
- Do the Voice, do the Voice, do the Voice! - she said excitedly and jokingly smacked BJ's upper arm a couple times. The demon showed his teeth, held out his hand like a sock puppet and immitated talking with it. As he did, the plant started to talk.
- FEED ME SEYMOOUUR! - the plant growled at the men before it. All 5 of them screamed and launched themselves into the pitch black room. They shoved Matt before themselves, who fell on his stomach, dropped his weapon and headbanged the hardwood floor. Beetlejuice snapped his fingers again, which made him and the girls reappear behind the sofa. He peeked out, threw his hand up and made a pulling movement. The burglars all got dragged deeper into the room. It felt like something grabbed their ankles and pulled them...
In the blink of a moment, the door slammed shut behind them, and maniacal laughter filled the air, like it came from every direction. Beetlejuice winked at the girls and got back to his normal, gravelly tone.
- Learn to throw your voice, fool your friends, fun at parties!
- Now THAT is cool! I wanna do that too! - said Rei in an excited tone. Sofía rolled her eyes; she was still very pissed at her sisters so she decided to not give a damn, doesn't matter what awesome things Ari's demon buddy could do. Ari peeked over the edge of the sofa and giggled at the expressions of the men. They looked so afraid. Beetlejuice quickly pulled her back and shushed her with a small laugh. He gestured towards the fireplace which instantly lit up. One of the guys let out a tiny scream, which made BJ rub his palms in ecstasy. He bit his lower lip.
- Mi mamá was right. - said one of the burglars, a shorter latino guy with wobbly voice. - This place... is cursed.
- No it's not. - stated the one next to him. He sounded clearly afraid as well, he just tried to cover it with confidence. - Anyway, what is it with you and curses? You're never happy without a good curse. Superstitious idiot. - he changed into a more sarcastical tone. - "This is cursed, that is cursed!"
- Give it a rest, will ya!!! - shouted Matt, who was looking for the shotgun. - Don't be pussies! It's just the wind, and my baby always had weird plants. You know what we came for. Let's head upstairs, 2 people per girl, and have some fun! - he flashed an evil smile at his "friends". And that made Beetlejuice's blood boil.
- Not on my watch, Mattyboy! - he hissed. He closed his eyes for a moment. Welp, hope I'm not rusty. - Let's see, what are you jerks the most afraid of?
He disappeared from behind the sofa. The girls peeked out, and clearly saw a shadow figure circling the men. It was audible that something was moving behind them. The burglars turned around but didn't see a thing. Beetlejuice's shadow form took a quick look into every men's eyes. Several scriptures from the Middle Ages tell us that if a demon looks into your eyes, they can see your biggest fears. Who would've thought that it's true?
- Got it. - said Beej as he reappeared behind the sofa with a snap. He took a quick look on Ari's excited faced, and flashed a toothy grin. - This is gonna be so. Much. Fun. Let's give those guys the fright of their lives! - Beetlejuice disappeared again, just to reappear next to the windows. His figure was vaguely illuminated by the random thunderbolts. He tilted his head sideways and dropped his left hand next to himself. His painted black nails grew into huge claws, his catlike eyes were glowing, just like his dark burgundy hair. It always looked like this when he was in a destructive, devilish mood. He flashed a wicked, Cheshire-like smile and started to scratch the windows. It made the girls' get goosebumps but the burglars' look was a good enough compensation for the unpleasantness. Ari was pretty sure that the guys saw BJ for a moment before he disappeared with a laugh again. He sounded so evil. Beetlejuice appeared next to Ari again, digging into his fluffy hair, eyes closed, wide smile on his face. Shit, that's hot, thought Ari. - I'm still the Ghost with the Most.
- What if they go upstairs? - asked Sof with a raised eyebrow, pointing at the burglars approaching the stairs. - Hmm? Did ya plan out something for that as well, Mr. Ghosty-ghost?
- Well I have ideas... - said Ari and leaned close to Beej. She whispered something into his ear which made him bite his lower lip. At this point his teeth were more shark-like than human-like.
- Shit babes, you're a natural... - he moaned and flung his hand towards the stairs. Matthias just stepped on the first step, but was stopped by the sight of 2 little girls standing on the top of the stairs, holding hands. Their eyes were all black.
- Come play with us, Matty. Forever... and ever... and ever... - they said in the same rhythm, with the creepiest child-voice you can ever imagine. The burglars stepped back. Ari couldn't hold back any longer and shouted:
- NOW!
The children started screaming histerically and in the same moment, blood started to wave down the stairs, soaring on the walls, splashing at the men. They all screamed bloody murder and tried to ran away, scattering in every possible direction. Beetlejuice's eyes were glowing with pleasure.
- Do you hear that sound, Ari? That BEAUTIFUL sound? - he said with a moan and bit his fist. - That is the sound, of clean, white, shorts turning brown.. - he looked at Ari. - Ain't it the sweetest noise around? - he laughed maniacally which made Ari and Rei giggle as well. - You guys stay here so you won't stay in the way, but you... - he grabbed Ari's hand and pulled her up to her feet. - ...you deserve to enjoy the show from first row, babes.
With a snap, they appeared in the corner, next to good old Long John Silver's skeleton. Beetlejuice wiggled his fingers and the pirate slowly came to life. One of the burglars, with terror in his eyes, tried to run away as far as possible from the reanimated corpse, but clumsily, he lost his foothold because of the dripping blood from his clothes and fell on his back. It made a huge thud. Ari burst out laughing, like the child she was in heart, but tried to cover her mouth with her hand. Beetlejuice was laughing too, but decided to top his performance and wiggled his fingers again. The pirate started rattling as he lifted his sword up, let out a warcry, and started to run in the lying man's direction. He let out an agonizingly high-pitched scream as he got up. BJ and Ari laughed more histerically.
- Did you hear that?! - wheezed the girl and slapped BJ's shoulder. - Oh my god let's make some more people scream!
BJ held Ari's hand, and pulled her over to the TV. The demon tapped the screen which instantly lit up in blue. Weird streaks appeared on it, then a hand from the inside, tapping the glass. Then another one. Then one more. Two guys, who now held each other, screamed out. BJ put his arm around Ari's shoulders.
- Panic and stress, oh ain't it the best? - he said an laughed with his head thrown backwards.
- You are such a weirdo! - she laughed and elbowed him in the side. He let her go, tilted his head sideways, hunched down and bit his lips in a weird, kinda creepy manner. Ari wheezed and scruffed his fluffy hair. Beetlejuice hunched down more.
- Now behind my ear... - he said with a moan. Ari pulled her hand back with a laugh. She looked around, admiring the sight of bloody men running around, but then her eyes found a specific person standing before the steps, staring at her with a shotgun in his hand. The smile from her face disappeared. She took a step back, and Beetlejuice instantly stepped before her, covering her with his body. He formed a little cup with one of his hands, held out the other dramatically and blew into his palm. A huge blob of fire appeared right before them, blowing up in Matthias's face. He screamed and BJ laughed. - No worries babes, I got ya. NOW WHERE WERE WE. - he turned around and after some looking, he pointed at a guy. He was trying to open up the front door, but it was shut. Beetlejuice made huge gestures and summoned a crazy eyed, killer looking dog. Ari awwed and crouched down. The dog acted all surprised when the girl scruffed his head, but in half a second he got really happy and wagged his tail. Beetlejuice raised an eyebrow and made an unimpressed face. - You are a hellhound, you are SO not supposed to do that. - Ari laughed, hugged the dog one more time, then pointed at the guy Beetlejuice was eyeing.
- Go, catch! - she said in an angelic voice. The hellhound started barking and running towards his target. Poor guy jumped up on the hall cabinet.
Beetlejuice snapped again. They now appeared in the downstairs bathroom. A burglar was leaning against the bathroom door, huffing, and as they appeared, he pointed at BJ in fear.
- YOU! - he shouted. - My dad told me about you! The stripey demon with the stupid hair who haunts the creepy house at the edge of the town! Nobody believed a young weedhead pizza guy but you ARE real! - Beetlejuice shrugged and flashed an evil smile.
- Well, why didn't you listen to him? I bet he told ya to stay away from this... - he rubbed his palms together. - ...creepy house... - he opened his palms, water pouring out of them. Ari climbed up on the washing machine, which was a good idea, noticing that something huge started to move in the water. A crab-like figure. The guy screamed bloody murder. BJ laughed and snapped. Him and Ari reappeared in the living room, right behind the sofa. Rei was clapping like an idiot. Shit, even Sofía looked a bit more enthusiastic now. What can I say, the guy IS good.
- Are you lovely ladies having fun? - Ari and Rei nodded exaggeratedly, Sofía huffed and rolled her eyes. - Well the real show is just about to begin! Take your seats! - Beetlejuice teleported the girls onto the sofa while himself appeared on the coffee-table. He started tapping a rhythm with his feet and out of nowhere, the sound of a guitar could be heard. Then came drums. BJ was kinda dancing around on the table, feeling himself. One of the burglars ran towards him with a glass thing he found on one of the shelves. BJ fixed his jacket and with a movement of a hand, he summoned fire towards him. Then laughed at the guy falling over. Now full on music was blasting. Theatrical weirdo, thought Ari. Rei clapped, BJ bowed. Then he raised his hands slowly, making big spiders emerge from the ground. Sof whined a little and closed her eyes.
- EWEWEWEWEW.
One of the burglars, who was sitting in the corner, legs pulled up to his chest, cried out.
- THIS IS JUST A LUCID DREAM! I'M DREAMING! - BJ turned his head backwards, then floated before him with a normal facing, tilted head, and grabbed the guy's chin.
- Really? - the girls didn't see what's happening really, but what they saw, was that BJ's head was getting bigger and that he opened his lower jaw like a snake. - Then tell me, buddyboy, why do I hear you screaming? - the burglar screamed out and turned white as a wall. Beetlejuice appeared next to Ari on the sofa. He wiped his teary eyes and laughed again. Ari grabbed his thigh with an excited smile.
- You are fantastic! Unbelievable! That was a sound that says I will never sleep well again! - she breathed in. BJ's eyes were glowing at her. Literally glowing. - I can't believe you are such a talented scarer. Hollywood should learn from you. - the demon looked down at his shoes and crumpled his jacket. A slight streak of pink appeared in his hair. Ari jumped back. - OH MY GOD YOUR HAIR CHANGES COLOR! - he pulled the differently colored streak and sighed.
- Yeah, it's like a moodring... Stupid thing always tells on me...
- THAT IS THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN! - said Ari with excitement in her voice. - What does light pink mean?
- NOTHING. - stated Beej. With a little bit too much voice. He cleared his throat. - Imma tell ya later, but as you said, we still have so much shit to do, to haunt, to kill... - he winked at Ari who rolled her eyes and crossed her arms before her chest. Beetlejuice booped her nose, than pulled her up onto the table. He whirled her around in ecstasy, both laughing, BJ howling sometimes. - Nice moves, little hellion! - he laughed. The music in the background got louder and louder with each moment. BJ let Ari go for a moment. The guys were losing it at this point, most of them crying and running around. Beetlejuice looked at his pal. - Hey Ari, check this out! - he raised his hands, pointing at one guy after another, twitching with each move. All 6 of them stood up straight. BJ looked at Ari with a wicked smile. - Dance break!
To the rhythm of the music, the burglars all started to dance. They did the same moves BJ did, with a weird green fog in their eyes. Beetlejuice occasionally looked at the girls, who were laughing their asses off. BJ did The Thing™, which made them all snort. Beetlejuice didn't notice that it also made Ari check out his pelvic moves.
Tumblr media
The music ended, Rei and Sof was holding each other, both of them teared up by laughter. Ari slapped her thighs. Beetlejuice bowed several times.
- Thank you, thank you, thank you! That was an old Scandinavian folk song. - the girls teared up again. Beetlejuice smiled like an idiot. Now his hair was more green then burgundy. He was having a great time. - I mean, yeah, I put my own spin on it, but... Hey, ya liked it!
And that's when their laughter was stopped by the sound of barrel-loading a shotgun.

It happened on a beautiful day with my beautiful wife and beautiful children.
My wife is beautiful in a way that’s hard to describe. It’s a God-given kind of beauty, like a waterfall or mountain top. I can’t say what makes her so beautiful, but her face is addicting. I want to climb inside of her and live in her warm darkness.
The only thing that rivals her beauty is my children, Sammy and Sam. We named Sam after me, and Sammy after my wife, Samantha. Every person we pass stops us and says how beautiful we look. Sam, Samantha, Sam and Sammy. A perfect, American family.
Samantha’s parents came from money, so when her mother died, we inherited their house in the Rockies. Our backyard stretched right into a frisbee golf course, which winded down to a quaint downtown. As the frisbee golfers trail by, I like to sit on the back deck, drink my coffee, and listen to the breeze. The air in the Rockies is so clean it feels like your blood is getting filtered every time you inhale.
Sometimes my wife would come out and sit next to me. We liked to talk about our dreams. The money we got when her mother died was enough to live six lifetimes, so we had plans for foundations and charity work. We cared about a lot of things, which was easy when you had the kind of money we had. You’d lose track when you tried to count the zeroes in our savings account.
On the day they disappeared, Samantha, Sam, Sammy, and I were walking along the frisbee golf path through the trees. It was early September. The air was crisp and bright, the mountain tops free of last year’s snow. Sam was telling us about a show he just watched. It was of a family that liked to walk through the woods. It sounded like something I would enjoy.
As he reached the end of the trail, Samantha grabbed my hand and looked up at me. Her eyes were big and blue, just like mine.
“I love you, Sam,” she said, “Thank you for taking care of us. Thank you for loving us. You’re an amazing father, and husband, and person. Thank you so much.”
She leaned forward and kissed me. It was a long, warm kiss. Our kids were giggling, but we didn’t care. I wrapped my hand behind her head and pushed her closer to me. Her chapstick was sweet like watermelon. The air was rich with pine scent.
When I pulled away from her kiss, she had tears in her eyes. They were happy tears, but tears nonetheless. I wiped them away with my thumb.
She started to say something, but I didn’t catch it. She opened her mouth to try again, but no sound came out. I laughed as I wiped another tear from her cheek. They were falling faster now.
“Fish out of water?” I asked.
But, she didn’t smile. She continued to flap her lips. Her eyes looked directly at me, blinking in rhythm with her mouth. Open, close. Open, close.
“Samantha?” I asked.
I looked down at Sam and Sammy to see if they noticed their mother’s weird behavior, but they were mimicking her. They were all looking at me, blinking and breathing in a quick rhythm, like the air was leaving the atmosphere.
I took a step away from them. They’re lips were perfectly synchronized. Open, close. Open, close.
“Please, stop,” I said, taking another step back, “Why are you doing this?”
But, they didn’t stop. They continued, moving faster. They took a step closer to me.
“Stop!” I yelled. I never raised my voice, but this seemed to call for it.
They weren’t the kind to pull pranks, so I didn’t appreciate them doing it now. And, why such a weird prank? Why not put shaving cream on my hand when I was sleeping? That was a classic, American prank. This was just odd.
Then, all of a sudden, they did stop. They closed their mouths and shut their eyes. I breathed a sigh of relief. I made a mental note to address this with all of them at the dinner table that night.
“Can someone explain that weird mouth thing?” I said. But, they didn’t respond. They stood with their arms at their sides, looking more like the trees than my family. They were standing on their tippy toes. I could see their chests rising and falling softly. They were breathing, but just barely, like the air was precious.
I decided to give them a brief lecture on the danger of pranks, but, when I tried to speak, I couldn’t open my mouth. It felt like a branch was climbing through my lips and over my tongue and right into my throat.
I looked behind Samantha, Sam, and Sammy for help, for another family, or hiker, or something. But, I didn’t see that. All I saw was something odd, a light of some kind. It started small at first, then got larger and larger, growing from the size of a fingernail to the face of a mountain. It moved like a crashing wave.
As the light came closer, Samantha and our children began to shake, like a cold wind had crossed them. Their arms were still glued at their sides, but they peered up at me now, their eyes as big dinner plates. They were frozen like that as the light came closer. I should have reached out to them. I should have done something, held them, taken cover, kissed them one last time.
As the light swallowed them, it took me next. Everything was bright and harsh and burning hot.
“Tony?” a voice asked. It was a woman’s voice. It came from somewhere in the light. It was procedural sounding, like a tour guide.
I tried speaking, but it was still too difficult.
“Tony?” she said again, “Can you hear me?”
As I stared into the heat, the light started to change. The blinding brightness took on more color; there were blues and reds and browns. They started in strange shapes, then took on figures I recognized. Faces. Bodies. Bed frames.
I tried to speak again. I managed one word.
“Samantha?” I asked. My voice was deeper and rougher than usual.
“No, Tony,” the voice said, “My name is Doctor Fierno. You’ve been in an accident.”
I kept blinking, and each time, the world of the light became clearer. There were doctors standing around me. Some looked younger, college aged. They were all writing things down.
“Where’s Samantha?” I asked again. For as much as I didn’t understand, I knew I needed to find them. Maybe I had fallen on a hike, or crashed my car on the way to get the groceries. Either way, I needed to let them know I was okay.
Doctor Fierno turned around to one of the other doctors. He was an older man with a big, grey beard.
“Any Samanthas on record?” she asked. The doctor shrugged.
“Samantha,” I repeated, feeling an anger rise in me, “Or Sam, or Sammy. Please. Just let me see them.”
Doctor Fierno smiled at me, as if my family was an inside joke she didn’t understand. She turned around and faced the group of young doctors.
“Tony DeLaurente. 45 years of age. Head trauma sustained during a drunk driving accident. Patient was coming back from a bar when he hit and killed a family of four on Highway 45.”
I didn’t understand what she was saying. This was no time for stories. I tried to stand up to get her attention, but when I did, I snapped back onto the bed. I was handcuffed to the bed frame.
Doctor Fierno didn’t even turn around.
“He’s been in a comatose state for 3 weeks,” she continued, “Patients have a range of reactions, some of them include anger. Normally there is a next of kin to keep them calm, but his closest relative is an estranged brother in Iowa.”
Doctor Fierno looked at the door. There were two men dressed in suits with police badges on their lapels.
“We should let the detectives have the room,” she said to the other doctors.
As the doctors left and the detectives came over to the side of the bed, I closed my eyes. They started talking to “Tony”, but I ignored them.
I closed my eyes and prayed this dream would end so I could wake up in my life. Samantha needed me. Sam and Sammy needed their father. I had no memory of, or interest in, the life of Tony.
But, no matter how hard I closed my eyes, I could still hear the detectives’ voices. I didn’t answer their questions. I was only thinking about one thing. My family was lost and I needed to find them.
