What a wonderful night to acknowledge that the man who voices our beloved Barcus Wroot also voices all of these characters:

And more. His name is Dario Coates, and according to casting director Samantha Béart, he had the most lines and spent more time in the recording studio than any VA, including those for the main companions. If you hear the voice of any NPC, there's a good chance he's voiced by Dario. He definitely deserves some well earned recognition! ❤

BG3 Patch 5 Spoilers

WARNING: BG3 SPOILERS AHEAD!

New content from the ending scene of BG3. This is all from the perspective of a redeemed Dark Urge who romanced Shadowheart and Halsin, and recruited every "good" ally possible.

people at the party: all your companions, scratch, owlbear, volo, and a bard in the middle playing a song (his name is milil)

lae'zel is the only one who isn't here physically, she sent an astral projection instead because she's been busy fighting vlaakith

astarion explains why he ran away (ashamed) when the sunlight hit him, he's become a "hero" who adventures and has accepted himself

(romanced halsin) you can hug halsin, he's missed his friends and you. you can do both the hug and the kiss, it's really sweet. he's turned the shadowlands into a community, repursing reithwin and moonrise towers into homes for people

jaheira's daughter rejoined the flaming fist, she's been working on rebuilding the harper network. the upper city was entirely destroyed by the battle but has been mostly rebuilt. she jokes that you might be a parent soon

wyll gives you a choice between three stories, a stegosaur/dinosaur battle, an impossible lich, or a young dragon. he lost his warlock powers but has been managing the best he can, and has become a RANGER ("a true hunter of monsters"). duke ravengard is commanding the flaming fist and help rebuilding the city, and he's very proud of his son

minsc and boo guard the streets while jaheira is "occupied with harperish manners". they "went to give a tickle" to the zhentarim, then got locked up in a zhentish cell, awaiting execution? idk if i'm reading incorrectly but he seems to be implying that he actually GOT executed but withers brought him back just in time lmfao

gale has become "professor gale dekarios of blackstaff academy, educator of the esteemed school of illusion". tara is with him. he surrended the crown of karsus to mystra, who cured him of the orb in exchange (his tattoo is gone), though his students still think he's explosive (he implies that he uses it as a threat to keep his class under control). he tells his students about your adventures together. he also implies you're welcome to visit his tower

shadowheart (main romance) - the game told me that we settled down together to live a happy, peaceful life on a farm in the countryside. shar still hurts her (if parents are saved), especially when she can sense that SH is enjoying herself, but it's been getting less frequent because she's been "losing interest". there's a new hug and kiss scene for her too, so i'm assuming this is for ALL companions and not just halsin/SH/whoever

withers will speak to you about karlach, explaining that she won't be able to come back. he jokes about her, which is rare for him, and you're given to opportunity to grieve her loss. in "a dozen tendays" (assumedly how long bg3 is), "an entire life was lived, she lived several centuries" (not exact quote).

milil, the bard playing in the center, does NOT want to be there. he's pissed that no one recognizes him (he's pissed specifically that i'm a bard and don't recognize him), i had to pass a deception check to recognize him and he cheered up and offered to change the song he's playing

How each companion would gift you their Valentine's card (assuming it's just a cheesy little card, no gift involved, before the end of their quests):

Astarion: Hands it to you personally, waits for an adequate amount of praise before he gives you a 'you're welcome' and a fanged grin.

Gale: The card is an illusion, delivered to you by a mage hand. It's quite lovely, and Gale explains in great detail how he crafted it.

Karlach: Tries to hand deliver it, paper catches fire when she gets too excited. It's the thought that counts.

Lae'zel: Considers hand delivering a card, but she doesn't care for istik paper. Finds a rock as close to a Githyanki Slate as possible and practically bonks you with it.

Shadowheart: Leaves it on your pillow for you to find, but only after debating your pack or your hand, and ultimately decides this is the only way to stay in line with Shar's teachings.

Wyll: Puts the most thought into this by far. Depending on your preferences, he may get Scratch to deliver it, may get Gale to help with a Skywrite, or simply hand it to you with a bashful smile.

Bonus people:

Halsin: Will either engrave a heartfelt message on a piece of wood and hand deliver it or, if you know speak with animals, ask an appropriately adorable animal for assistance in delivering a letter.

Minthara: Doesn't believe in cards, but for you she would verbally deliver any amount of romantic prose.

Alfira: Will sing you a Valentine's message, blushing all the while.

Barcus: Would say neither of you deserve the awkwardness of a Valentine. Will instead give you a plain piece of paper that just says, 'Thanks.'

LISTEN okay, hear me out, play with me in this space, come with me on a wulbren bongle adventure

I am not a Wulbren stan. I am not even a casual Wulbren fan. Wulbren Bongle is a dick. 

He is pretty objectively a dick. He’s a domestic terrorist, he’s rude, he’s charismatic but uses it for ill intent. These are all things that are factually true in the text. Wulbren Bongle is not a dick for not wanting to hang out with Barcus. 

I know, I know - a lot of you imprinted on Barcus. He’s sweet, he’s funny, he’s a different kind of charismatic. He’s a victim you have to rescue from multiple instances of peril. He’s very easy to imprint on. 

He’s also subject to the way Wulbren talks to him. Wulbren is openly hostile and rude to him. That’s a fact. 

But - and this is a huge but - he is not as unjustified as most people have made him out to be. 

As a person who has been on both sides of dynamics like this, it sucks a bunch both ways. Barcus has to grapple with the fact that his childhood friend has outgrown their friendship, and headed in a direction he does not approve of. Wulbren has to grapple with the fact that a guy he went to school with has decided to make it his mission to be the angel on his shoulder.

Now, as an autistic guy who has a hard time reading social cues, I get it. Barcus is an avatar into what it feels like to reconnect with old friends who have had their lives go a very different way. It sucks to feel like you have to do something to stop their descent into darkness. But like…if someone is telling you with their words, in no uncertain terms, to fuck off, it also sucks to wilfully continue sticking around. Barcus’s sincere commitment to Wulbren does not entitle him to Wulbren’s friendship. 

Could Wulbren have said it nicer? Sure! But if they’ve known each other most of their lives, who’s to say that it wasn’t said in kinder tones and words before? How many times? We only get a small window into their relationship, and most of it is from Barcus because Wulbren does not want to get into it because he and Barcus are not friends. 

I have been on both sides of dynamics like this. On the Barcus side, there is the pining for a closeness that cannot be, and yet cannot be let go. That sucks for Barcus. But I have also been on the Wulbren side - someone has decided that they want Me to be their Best Friend, and I do not want that. Being polite is exhausting when you have someone In Your Business constantly, especially when you would not identify them as a close friend. The song and dance of polite deflection can only go so far before you snap, and when you do, you are the asshole of that story. 

The Wulbren/Barcus dynamic hits for me, but not the same way it seemed to hit for a lot of people. 

I love Barcus. I am not Team Barcus. 

(Sidebars: obviously domestic terrorism is bad, and I side with/save the Gondians every time. I do not think Barcus is a bad person. I do think Wulbren is a bad person. I just don't think this specific thing is what makes either of them good or bad, and it's one of the things I see come up most frequently in discourse)

Thoughts on episode 13

1) I feel like the falling out was a bit harsh, it was more Willow and Gus making it sound worse than Luz meant. Like the original statement of "I'm too good for the detention track!" To me just felt like she was saying she had potential

2) I just...I love Barcus. No explanation, one of a kind, 10/10

3) As soon as I saw the fake coven leader transformed I guessed she was a basilisk and I WAS RIGHT! Curse you adorable post-story comics I keep finding!

4) The magical girl transformation of Luz being in every track and looking like a fashion disaster was fun, I like how they visually did the multi-track kids' uniforms

5) Not Amity low key freaking out that she and Luz go to school together in a brief cut away, THE ROMANTIC TENSION

6) Honestly the secret learning hideout was very cool, I hope it comes back somehow because it was awesome design/function wise

7) Gus was...kind of a disaster all episode this time. Gus, please, I love you but you were being an absolute menace AND NOT IN THE FUN WAY

8) Why is Luz's solution to things always "steal something"? It doesn't work. It never works. I blame Eda.

9) of course the lord of Chaos was Eda but also I'm more and more getting the vibe that she just wanted to be challenged and acted out when she wasn't as a kid. Poor gifted kid, I feel you
