Is This the Hardest of All Aircraft to Fly? | Air & Space Magazine| Smithsonian Magazine by u/Maleficent-Trifle940
Is This the Hardest of All Aircraft to Fly? | Air & Space Magazine| Smithsonian Magazine Harry doesn't have the IQ to pilot a regular helicopter let alone be a pilot or gunner in an Apache.:As the most technically advanced helicopter in the world, the Apache AH Mk1 was also the hardest to fly…. To train each Apache pilot from scratch cost £3 million (each custom-made helmet alone had a price tag of £22,915). It took six months just to learn how to fly the machine, another six to know how to fight in it, and a final six to be passed combat ready. And that was if you were already a fully qualified, combat-trained army helicopter pilot. If you weren’t, you’d have to add four months for ground school and learning to fly fixed wing at RAF Barkston Heath, six months learning to fly helicopters at RAF Shawbury, half a year at the School of Army Aviation learning to fly tactically, and a final sixteen-week course in Survival, Evasion and Resistance to Interrogation, courtesy of the Intelligence Corps’ most vigorous training staff. Three years in total….Flying an Apache almost always meant both hands and feet doing four different things at once. Even our eyes had to learn how to work independently of each other. A monocle sat permanently over our right iris. A dozen different instrument readings from around the cockpit were projected into it. At the flick of a button, a range of other images could also be superimposed underneath the green glow of the instrument symbology, replicating the TADS’ or PNVS’ camera images and the Longbow Radars’ targets. The monocle left the pilot’s left eye free to look outside the cockpit, saving him the few seconds that it took to look down at the instruments and then up again…. New pilots suffered terrible headaches as the left and right eye competed for dominance. They started within minutes, long before take-off…. As the eyes adjusted over the following weeks and months the headaches took longer to set in. It was a year before mine disappeared altogether…. I once filmed my face during a sortie with a video camera as an experiment. My eyes whirled independently of each other throughout, like a man possessed. What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?
What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?
What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?
What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?
At first glance Yihn does seem fairly easy to sum up: a skinny little freak with a god complex, a consummate goth with a stick up his ass. But despite his shabby dressing habits and constantly looking like he needs a 12 hour nap, Yihn actually is in possession of a decent amount of gil, hidden in various stashes throughout Eorzea. He's just loathe to part with any of it.
What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?
Arguably Yihn has gotten worse than I could ever have imagined in terms of personality, but really the biggest change has been his abilities. I was initially going to make him not very powerful magically, but then decided I wanted to play around with power degeneration/black magic/corruption themes with him, so he got gud.
What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?
Processing wise, Yihn cannot handle grief. A lot of his interest in (/obsession with) death comes from so much of it so early in his life: his mother, his father, his family. He doesn't have a healthy way of understanding loss, despite his long years of training as a thaumaturge and brother of the Ossuary. For Yihn, his understanding of death has gone from devastating sorrow and panicky fear in childhood to a total detachment in adulthood. There's no in-between; corpses have gone from terrible to banal, death from an abstract and all-consuming terror to something much more pedestrian - and, perhaps, less permanent.
In terms of expressing himself, Yihn is awful at affection. He's possessive, clingy, intense, and when he realizes he's being too much his first reaction is to distance himself. He's also prone to leaving literal marks on those he engages with (as @john-barkston's Kay Lindo can attest).
thank you so much for the asks!! ;v; i love rambling about my garbage pail kid, so i appreciate the opportunity haha

Charcherry Weekly - Issue 123
The days are getting colder and darker and wetter. Sunburst doesn't even want to go outside half of the time. At least there's always the news.
Specter from the Grave
Early this week, a ghostly figure was seen and heard at the site of Hyacinth's grave on Autumnal. Reportedly, it had been crying all night, disturbing the local dryads and Heir of Time Rise Emit. The next day, Rise's sister, Brae Emit, spent the day watching over the grave, waiting for night to fall again. Rise joined her at some point. At nighttime, the ghostly figure turned out to be Gallade, who had changed into a ghost type after death. Reportedly, Gallade had told the Emit Twins that his trainer had been ghost-napped. Brae offered to become Gallade's new trainer, so that he could one day avenge his previous trainer. She has given Gallade the nickname Galahad, named after a legendary knight of the round table who sought the holy grail. Brae also managed to find a mysterious gold coin shortly after capturing Galahad. Brae is apparently collecting these coins for some reason.
A Visiting Mystery or Two
A mysterious person with temporic horns has been spotted in New Charcherry Town. Mage of Life Blaze tried to greet her, but she was scared off and disappeared to another time for a while. Later that night, Rise Emit showed up to assess the situation. They managed to give her enough funds to stay at the Cherry Pit for a while. It is assumed that this visitor is seasonalFlux.
The next day, PKMN Breeder HAZEL gave her an ultra ball, so she could use it on her eevee. Later on, a caravan of caroling elves arrived in town, after caroling their way through Unity Village first.
The day after, Rise showed back up to check on the horned visitor. It turns out that she was originally from another timeline, without a known way to return to it. Rise reportedly has accepted her into the ever expanding Emit family, also introducing her to Annual Santa Thoren Emit.
Shortly afterwards, an older elf from the caravan approached the Emit trio, explaining to them of the plight of the missing elves. Reportedly, a great deal of elves that were on a pilgrimage to Charcherry had gone missing near a popular campsite in Barkstone Pass, close to the main road of Pilgrim Path. It is highly likely that there is a voidco dungeon located in the nearby permafrost cave. Rise and the new mysterious person agreed to take on this quest together, also calling upon the others in the memo to join. The dungeon crashers plan on forming a rescue party on the 15th. The meetup point will be in Charcherry Square, at 5pm DZT. Make sure you are prepared for both dark and cold environments!
Movie Night
In response to a suggestion from her therapist, Witch of Time Katyleen Kitten has decided to host movie night once a week, rather than only once a month. This week, the chosen movie was Detective Pikachu. Granted, most of the group had already seen the movie before, but they reportedly enjoyed viewing it together. Katie also passed out booster packs, similar to the ones apparently distributed during the movie's theatrical release. The remaining booster packs were sent to Dr. Winters to give to those who show up to their therapy appointments.
Next week's movie: Megamind Time of viewing: December 13th at 10pm DZT Location: AC Memorial Robotics Lab, Desertia Town Please contact powerKitten if you plan on showing up.
Safe Danger
The next day, Prince of Time Aeons Edgeworth found a package from voidco on their doorstep. After some careful consideration, Aeons opened the package and found a large safe and a letter. The letter happened to be addressed to your dear newsletter writer, though the second half of my chumhandle was used instead of my last name. The letter's contents were quite stiff and stilted, but there was an additional message written there as well.
It was determined that Hyacinth, who had disappeared a few days ago, had used this delivery to send a message about their whereabouts. Reportedly, they had been brought back to life, having been placed into the body that was meant to be offered to Thoren. However, they have been branded as "property of voidco", and forced to pay off "medical debt" as the personal assistant to the page of darkness himself. Apparently, they have been visited in their dreams by Dream Witch Leta Iovei, who offered them respite and hope for the duration of any long enough sleep in their captivity. Later on, me and Aeons opened the safe with the provided safe combination, and discovered a rather massive cache of friendcoins. As a currency, friendcoins are usually mostly worthless, being a cryptocurrency that's largely used internally by voidco, with physical coins that are made of very cheap metal. We are currently unsure what to do with these coins, aside from try to find a return address to send them off to again. It goes without saying that I don't want those friendcoins.
Not too long after, Rogue of Heart Charles pinged baseballBatman in the memo, asking about what the friendcoins could be used for. A rather stiff representative using his handle answered the question, leaving yet another set of hidden messages behind. It appeared to be Hyacinth sending the messages. Not too long after, there were reports of a mysterious phenomenon that occurred within the area of the main voidco headquarters. It was later revealed that it was the establishment of a conventional time zone, an ability that those of Rise's template have been known to be able to perform. Reportedly, this time zone has caused great amounts of chaos in the office building, having occurred without warning.
Hyacinth, if you're reading this, know that you're doing amazing and that we're rooting for you. There's been discussion of taking action in the summer, but this has yet to be planned very far yet. Hold onto hope, we'll be there for you in the future.
Pokemon blurbs
Other things of note, one of Charles's many buizels took his compushades and began reblogging some pictures of delicious and expensive sushi. There were at least ten different images and they all made me hungry looking at them.
Witch of Heart Cyrus has been spending time on Slowpoke island, and managed to befriend a slowpoke of their own. I wonder if my slowpoke would want to hang out their their slowpoke some time...
Rise Emit had tried once more to face the pokemon league in the sinnoh region, but was faced with defeat against Cynthia's last pokemon, Garchomp. It is expected that Rise will seek yet another rematch soon, after some remedial training with their pokemon team. This week’s known market stands in Desertia Town:
Lighter stand (this week)
Necktie stand (this week)
Artisanal jinglorian toy stand (this month until redistro)
Katie’s potion stand (*CaFAI filling in for Katie when unavailable)
Brae’s canned goods stand (currently closed for the time being)
shinyjiggly pokesnacks stand (ran by Rufus)
I think this covers enough. I've managed to get to the point in left beef where it crosses into Project Spaghettivase's introduction. I dread going back into the slow gear when the date finally rolls over in the comic. We all have to continue somehow however. https://letssosl.boards.net/thread/349/charcherry-weekly-issue-123

The Deck
A Better Love Series headcanon
Jack Aarons met Naomi Goldmann in 1944 when he was stationed at Barkston Heath. He was 25. Naomi was 17.
Naomi’s uncle owned a local where all the RAF boys would gather on the weekends. Naomi worked evenings there, and that’s how she met Jack.
Jack thought Naomi was gorgeous, with her dark eyes and wild hair and sweet smile. He asked her out three times.
There times, she turned him down.
But she’d always slip him an extra pint when the boys weren’t looking. “On the house,” she’d say. And sometimes, Jack would stay until closing just to have the chance to help Naomi clean up for the night.
Naomi is very easy to talk to. Jack finds out that she moved to England from Warsaw with her younger brothers during the summer of ‘38, that her uncle had taken them all in. He finds out that she’s got a wry sense of humor and a wicked sharp tongue. And one Friday night, well after the regulars are home and in bed, Jack finds out that Naomi Goldmann is an excellent kisser.
He finds himself confessing all sorts of things to her. How he worries about his kid brother back home, how lonely it is here, how he’s bored stiff in the barracks.
Naomi hums. She’s got that thoughtful look on her face. And the next time she sees Jack, she slips something into his breast pocket.
It’s a deck of playing cards.
The fourth time Jack Aarons asks Naomi Goldmann out, he decides on a whim to play for keeps. Jack asks for her hand in marriage.
And to his utter shock, Naomi says yes.
They marry in the spring of 1945, just weeks before Jack returns home. He and Naomi exchange a letters for several months, and in the fall of ‘45, Naomi says goodbye to her family, backs up a single battered duffel bag of belongings, and catches a boat to New York to join her husband in the United States.
Jack loves Naomi so much that he can hardly breathe when he looks at her. But rural Kentucky is a huge culture shock for Naomi, and being the young foreign wife to a military man is hard. By 1959, there’s more distance and silence in the Aarons house than there is anything, and Jack makes the worst mistake of his life.
He sleeps with another woman.
He confesses immediately, but Naomi’s had enough. She takes the boys and leaves, and Jack never sees her again.
It absolutely breaks him.
Jack doesn’t realize that he has a daughter until five years later, when the police show up with three kids in tow.
Hannah is his special kid. She looks so much like her mother that it steals Jack’s breath. Has that same fearlessness and tenacity, too. Jack doesn’t have the first clue how to be a dad to a little girl, but he does his damndest for Hannah.
He teaches her to play cards. Hannah has a sharp mind, and it helps Jack with his grief, making new memories with that old deck.
After Jack’s accident, Hannah takes the cards. Dad can’t use them anymore, anyway. She figures they’re hers, now.
When her apartment is bombed in December of 1992, losing Dad’s playing cards is the biggest blow. In a lot of ways, that deck of cards is all that Hannah has left of her dad.
Which is why it’s such a huge deal that Javi replaces them after the bomb. Not only did Javi pick up on the fact that those cards were important, but to Ears, it kind of feels like history repeating itself. She knows the origins of the cards. Dad had told it all to her, one late night after he’d had one too many beers. So having them replaced was kind of like Mom, and now Javi, saying, “hey, you’re not alone anymore.” Ears took it as a sign for the universe that Javier Peña was a man that she could trust with her entire heart.
And she wasn’t wrong.

hihi! which brush do u use in the "lil johnny barkston" art piece? its so yummy
Hello! Thank you for asking, but this is probably not going to be helpful as I use an out of date desktop version of Autodesk Sketchbook that is only available through archived sources D: but I'll answer anyway in the rare chance anyone finds this helpful;
Tumblr media
My go to lineart brush is "Wet Frayed Bristles" I love this thing to bits
Tumblr media
And the textured coloring in his fur was done with "Signature Ink" great for painterly type coloring and messy inks
[I would genuinely would like to know if anyone else uses this version of Autodesk, as I made the switch to this from Krita because it runs wonderfully on my garbage laptop (Latitude e5540) and doesn't need my entire cpu to run (I can still watch vids/listen to stuff). However, it is extremely bare bones as a program so keep that in mind.]
Hope this helps????? :D

Walk of the Roses 2019
Well what a cracking day out that was! The weather turned up maybe just a little too hot for the first 4 mile leg from Cawood to Church Fenton, but clouded over a little to give us some slightly less sweaty sections, lol.
We were served a great lunch by Kathy at the Jolly in Cawood first which set us right up for the day. I can tell you that a good walk between Pubs really makes that first pint at the bar special and we were really impressed with the beer selection for such rural pubs, The Fenton Flyer and Boot & Shoe get a special mention for that. Highlight of the trip was definitely The Greyhound in Saxton, just such a beautiful historic pub in a pretty village, some nice Sam’s beers to be had there too. Perfect end to the day was the last stretch round the old battlefield and ending up at the Crooked Billet for some giant Yorkshire Puddings, always superb food there. The Ash Tree wasn’t great, but as a last minute addition we probably wouldn’t go back to. Rest of the pubs and the walk was brilliant though, just the right distance between them all I think. This was possibly my favourite pub crawl I’ve done in a long while, we’ll definitely be giving it another bash next year, big thanks to everyone that turned out for it.

Prince Harry is a Qualified Pilot
In December 2008, Prince Harry passed his Army Air Corps “Grading” and Pilot’s Selection Board interview to begin training to become an Army Air Corps Pilot in January 2009. During his time in the Army Air Corps he was assigned to 662 Squadron, 3 Regiment within 16 Air Assault Brigade. Harry later qualified as an Apache helicopter commander in 2013 after three years of training. While on a five-month tour in Afghanistan, he served as a co-pilot gunner - sharing flying duties and taking control of the weapons of the two-man Apache.
During basic flying training , He undertook his first solo flight in a Slingsby Firefly sometime in April 2009 whilst stationed at RAF Barkston Heath.
Harry is a qualified Apache pilot, and was in fact an Apache Helicopter Commander. Both seats in the Apache have the same flying controls, with the front seat having the additional weapons systems, the “co-pilot” can be given full control at any time. The term co-pilot/gunner is very misleading, and is not to be confused with co-pilots who fly fixed wing aircraft, and are generally a lower rank/have less hours on type.
Sincerely a current serving member of the UK Armed Forces.
Thank you for this!  This is wonderful! Thank you!😁❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
