Well, I'm back. I say as I return to my middle earth fixation, which is wonderful, I love it, but solely the books, and I'm also still going strong in Takahashi's xeno universe, so this is going to get busy

speaking of xenogears, i found out that they released both a bart fatima figure and a maria and chu chu figure.

i already own fei, elly, weltall and weltall-id so.... I MUST OWN THE REST

from a convo with my sister: - obviously Fei is an Earth Pony but it's revealed he has unicorn ancestry once you find out more about his parents and becomes an alicorn later - by extension Grahf is whatever shadowy fucking shadowy unicorn thing Sombra is - Id is an alicorn - Elly would be a pegasus, being from, ya know, the society whose country floats above the clouds and looks down upon all others, and turns into an alicorn later - Miang would be a changeling - and so is Emeralda, but like, a good one - Citan would be a unicorn who has had his horn removed, and the scene in the game where he takes up his sword once more would be him getting his horn back - Bart would be an Earth Pony. end tweet. - Rico would…. hmm, Rico's tough. he's an animal hybrid so maybe a gryphon or a hippogryph or some other halfpony creature - Billy is a unicorn but with guns - Maria is a pegasus who can't fly on her own and makes use of the special jetpac her father left her - Chu-chu is Spike. no notes.

Are there people who say xenogears disk 2 is bad, actually?

it's generally thought to be a downgrade from 1 and some do think it's objectively bad. i see the argument, most of it is just a visual novel and not even a good one. it's not even good prose most of those sections, just the outline of what they'd consist of, "fought ramsus in the forest, he lost (again,) he'll be back", "bart fought merkava but deus still made everyone a mutant" and so on.

but i genuinely like it for the inner monologue sections fei and elly get which think are well done despite the lack of budget, and for seeing chuchu die for our sins.

an underrated aspect too is that, due to disk 2 being so compressed, all the trippy shit feels more bizarre and has more lasting appeal. coming off xb2 there's equally trippy shit by the end, but the game dwells on it long enough that you come to terms with it. you don't have to ruminate on it like in xenogears.

Thinking again about how I would rewrite Xenogears to make it actually good

- Fei and Bart kiss (epic and removes the turbo cringe cousin kissing aspect of the game. Bartholomew I’m so sorry the writers would do that to you sweetie oh my god)

-Rewrite Elly entirely. No more weird sexism please

-Maybe make her Fei’s sister or something? And remove the reincarnation thing I think that plot point sux (I am of the mind with this series that more complicated =/= good)

-there’s also a weird Freudian thing with how it is now so I would like that gone please

-Obvious one but make the other playable characters more relevant to the plot. Disc 1 really is just Bart and Fei’s Gay Desert Adventure and as epic as that is it’s not exactly balanced lmao

-REMOVE. MURDER DID PLOT. This one is also obvious FUCK that

-Dunno what I’d do with Id tho. Wouldn’t cut him completely bc he IS cool and the angst potential is there

-Disc 2 (derogatory) so much here I don’t even know where to start + a lot isn’t really the OG writer’s fault so *shrugs*

- That little bitch Krelian does NOT get to go to “heaven” in the end or whatever. No. I’m making him stay on earth and live forever atoning for his crimes. It’s what he deserves and is more narratively interesting than him just getting what he wants.

Overall I just. Do not really like Xenogears’ story outside of a few isolated elements (COUGH Bart COUGH) but I think the game is soooo pretty and charming so aaagh. What I would give to rehaul the script entirely…
