I mighta had Led Zeppelin up a little loud as i went over Beartooth Pass this past weekend. I'm at over 10k' above sea level. Just me, the openness and a little Zeppelin ... And even this video doesn't cover it. Just amazing up there.

Throwback Thursday: The Father of Glaciology
Tumblr media
This is Louis Agassiz. He was a Swiss biologist and geologist in the 19th century. His biggest claim to fame was that he was the first to propose a global ice age.
In 1837, he presented the idea that the glaciers in the Alps had once been larger and had covered not only the mountains, but the plains of Europe, Asia and North America as well. Along with William Buckland, he searched the British Isles for evidence and came back pretty satisfied.
What kinds of evidence are there that glaciers once covered the northern hemisphere? They left huge marks on the surface of the earth.
Tumblr media
Moraines: huge piles of loose rock and debris pushed ahead and off the sides of a glacier. Above is a lateral moraine in eastern Oregon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Horn: a pyramidal peak created by glaciers on all sides. The top photo is in Big Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Range. The bottom is on the Beartooth Highway in Wyoming.
Tumblr media
Cirque: a bowl-shaped depression where mountain glaciers start their life. This is a shallow one on the Wasatch Front near Draper.
Tumblr media
U-shaped Valley: pretty self-explanatory. This is Blackmore Valley in the Gallatin Range of Montana.
Tumblr media
Arete: a sharp ridge created by ice passing on both sides. Absaroka Range, MT
Tumblr media
Tarn Lake: water that fills a cirque. Absaroka Range, Wyoming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kettle Ponds: ponds left behind from melting glaciers. Top photo: Wyoming Mountains from a plane. Bottom: Beartooth Range
Tumblr media
Proglacial Lake: a lake caused by damming of a moraine or ice sheet. This is Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park.
Tumblr media
Drumlin: a large hill of sediment deposited by the bottom of a glacier.
Tumblr media
Striations: gouges left in rock by a passing glacier
And so much more. Once you start to see the remnants of glaciers, you'll never stop seeing them. Just like Agassiz.
Tune in tomorrow to learn about an extinct group of Ordovician fishes. Fossilize you later!

The human story would not contain the phrase “And it came to pass” had we not chosen sin, as nothing that was created would have passed, and everything that was created would still be. “And it came to pass” is a consolation phrase used to dress the wound of human history festering in a septic relationship between time and turmoil. The phrase is found 463 times in scripture, the first time in Genesis 4, just after man’s first sin recorded in Genesis 3.
I snapped this pic of the Eagle sunset over the Beartooth Mountains at our homestead in Clark, Wyoming.

Remembering AJ
My son used to say, “Everything happens for a reason Dad”. In the six years since his death, I have struggled to believe that truth. The never-ending mystery of “why” still gnaws at me. I first met him when he was 24 years old. I started a dialogue with him when he was 14 and I’m eternally grateful his mother never ‘poisoned the well” and facilitated that connection. When he came to visit I decided to take him on a road trip figuring that seeing the natural beauty of Montana would help ease the awkwardness for both of us. I took him up Beartooth Pass just outside Red Lodge, an awe-inspiring winding road with a scenic overlook at the top. Along the way I gave him a thumbnail sketch of my side of the family and in passing I happened to mention some personality quirk that I inherited from his grandfather. His eyes lit up like he just found some hidden treasure. He went on to explain he also had this personality quirk but could find no evidence of it on his side of the family. I could see that a great mystery had been solved, making me smile. It went a long way to ease the awkwardness of our initial encounter. Ten years later he was gone and I think, for me, what hurts the most is the loss of all the tomorrows we will never share. At his funeral, I met some of his friends and acquaintances who told me of the profound effect he had on their lives. One close friend in particular told me how he never gave up on people, and always saw the good in them no matter what. I was struck by the realization that I too shared this quality and how ironic it was to discover this after he was gone. I would never get a chance to tell him how my eyes lit up like he did so long ago. I miss you son…in small ways and significant ways. You were right, everything happens for a reason.

Okay, so I just realized they keep saying 10,000 meters above sea level.
When I lived in montana we took the Bear Tooth Highway a couple of times-- Always going up, mind you. It's a BEAUTIFUL view.
Tumblr media
At the bottom of the canyon there is Cooke City, Montana, not shown here. The highway going up to the top is a bunch of switchbacks. Going up keeps you on the INSIDE of the curves and away from the ledge. Can't decide if you could pay me to drive down instead. There are guard rails in most places. most.
The last time we went up we stopped at a rest stop that let you feed the chipmunks. You really shouldn't feed the wild life, but that was extremely out of our control. I can only report that they were SO FAT and SO cute. Like imagine what size you think a chipmunk ought to be? About a small handful. One of them there was like the size of the body of a grey squirrel. About 3x the size of regular little chipmunk. Adorable.
The view at the top is sparse, but also quite beautiful. I can only handle about 10 minutes of looking around however. The top is 10,947 feet above sea level and the air is real thin up there. I get a headache* and fall asleep almost immediately. I wont wake up again for like ages.
Whiiich also means I actually haven't seen much of the actual top of Beartooth which is actually really disappointing.
When we stopped inside the park it was a the first gift shop. On our way in I heard a guy tell his buddy my favourite joke ever. It's one of those happened to a friend of a friend jokes, but it's now been nearly a decade I can hardly remember the joke or if it actually happened to someone. I'll try my hand at it anyway. if you recognize it please tell the better version.
A man is on a trip with his friend over a brutally hot summer and when they stop he gets himself an ice cream cone. His buddy comes back from the bathroom and says, "Looking good, man, can I get a lick?" and the man, of course, responds, "No way!" His friend shrugs, "Yeah yeah, no worries. Can I get a lick of your ice cream instead?" The man stares at him a moment and then hands the cone over.
We had already passed the two of them, but weren't out of ear shot when I cackled much to the tellers satisfaction.
Anyway, the sky islands are twice the peak of the Beartooth pass, or over 6miles above our sea level. For more perspective, there are only 14 mountain peaks in the world at 5miles or higher above our sea level. wild.

Fighting Back
@avastyetwats || Israel "Izzy" Hands || Fighting Back by Beartooth || X TW: Flashing Visuals || Lyric Starter Post || X ||
Causing pain became the latest trend All the after effects, they might be permanent I won't let you in my head again Try to tear me apart, I'll just keep fighting back
ᒥ🐙ᒧ—        He was back, the monster he fought down for years. He was back and it was his mission to give Israel exactly what he wanted, misery. If he was to live this miserable life until the end of his days, he'd bring them all down with him.
A knife is thrown just mere inches from Izzy's head, striking the wall behind the man. Edward snarls, his grease covered features twisted into a ferocious expression. "I fuckin' say when enough is enough, mate." The knife marked the wall where there had been tallies, another successful raid passed. And now Edward was already planning the next.
"I'm marking our course, and yer gonna fuckin' steer this ship exactly where I say. We will be moving close to that ship, we will board, and we will take all their shit. Am I clear?" Edward spins on his heels, heading for his desk where the chart was spread out. He takes another dagger and stabs it through the chart into the top of the desk. "There, we'll strike there."
