Masters of the Air | Teaser
In case you missed it the teaser for #MastersOfTheAir is out and it looks quite epic. it stars #AustinButler, #CallumTurner, #BarryKeoghan, and #NcutiGatwa. The series premieres January 26 on @appleTV.
Writer: Donald L. Miller (Book) Creators: John Orloff, John Shiban Stars: Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Ben Radcliffe, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, It would have been weird if this teaser wasn’t as epic as it is, it’s a Spielberg production after all. It looks awesome and the cast is just too interesting to ignore yet, I don’t know if this is something I’ll want to dive into in…

V.P. (Vulnerable Point), short film (2014)
Well, here I am, watching a short film I only found out about this week entirely by accident.
The director(!) very kindly shared a link with me. Shout-out to Andrew Nolan, nowadays better known for his excellent comedy work :3
VP is about a young soldier, Matt (played by James Wallwork) who's returned to the army after recovering from testicular cancer. He's clearly still pretty touchy about his masculinity - jury's out on the extent to which his Sgt. Major's sympathetic lines ("Given the choice between flying back to Bastion with my bollocks in a sandwich bag, or having them removed under anaesthetic - I know which one I'd choose") help or not.
Tumblr media
He's here to deliver the exposition we need before we launch into the story of how Matt got all bloodied and beaten.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you for your service, sir.
Sgt. Major spots him lamp a guy for punching his crotch in a ~friendly~ kickabout, and calls him in for a chat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsk tsk, not impressed.
The rest of the movie focusses on Matt, featuring a bit of Ben Dilloway being moody, a sweet Irish barmaid, and a less sweet Irish shitstirrer (Mr Nolan draws on his contacts from home ofc).
It's lighter than it seems - the tone is carried deftly, and Wallwork is compelling. There's quite a lot packed in there visually and it's really nicely made.
Rating
Dead? Nope!
Evil? Keep the comments about the British army to yourselves please, we're all thinking it. In this short there's no history, the Irish barmaid just thinks the English soldier is cute :3
Affects the plot? Well in the summary the second chance he gives Matt is made pivotal - and he does do the exposition!
It's an excellent look, the camo notwithstanding. And I am so grateful to the director for sharing it. But this must be balanced by screentime and the mortifying need to answer the director's email 🙃 4/5 I'm nothing if not generous. Based on the fact that I don't feel like any of this was a waste of my time :))

There's a real sense of "been there, dune that" to Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021)
There's a real sense of "been there, dune that" to Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021) #Review
Lethargically paced and inertly beautiful, Dennis Villeneuve’s DUNE arrives in cinemas frustratingly incomplete, disappointingly hollow and surprisingly hesitant in vision and execution. Threatened by the growing power of House Atreides, the galactic Emperor awards Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) stewardship of the planet Arrakis, also known as Dune and the only source of the most valuable…

Uniform / Portayal Of Guilt / Body Void @ Saint Vitus; October 20, 2021.
In my first month in Ronkonkoma I went to my very first noise show. Seeing Merzbow, Genesis P. Orridge, Pharmakon, Prurient, and Aaron Dilloway on the same bill meant that tickets were ordered instantly. I took the Long Island Railroad west to the Woodside stop, then the 7 and G lines and ran it to Wythe Av. in Greenpoint where I arrived at a long line at Output. The show started at 10PM and I knew I missed the mark by a little. 45 minutes later I was finally in, weaseled my way up front and saw two guys I wasn’t familiar with. The lead singer was surging back and forth, screaming on the mic- and inciting the crowd. His guitar player stood further back firing off these hazardous riffs as their drum machine rattled itself repeatedly. Three songs later and that’s all they wrote. Next up: Pharmakon. I stayed at Output for most of that bill and it was an eye-opener for me, once which made me realize that Greenpoint was always there for me when I needed it.
I don’t remember much of that opening set being I was late for it. (Output’s policy forbid anyone filming their shows.) Days later I looked them up and it was Uniform (Michael Berdan and Ben Greenberg). I found their debut Perfect World and recognized “Footnote” as one of their songs performed that night. That’s when I started getting into them. Wake In Fright came and it was a desperately needed dose of industrial-metal I haven’t had in forever thanks in part to tracks like “The Long Walk”. Then comes Ben Greenberg’s production work and his involvement in The Men, Coca Leaf, and the Sacred Bones label. And Michael Berdan had plenty of key moments in Drunkdriver, Believer/Law, Canal Street Electronics, and (holy shit) his role as a screaming psychotic in York Factory Complaint. With other cuts such as “The Walk” from The Long Walk and Shame, plus the fact that they’re from New York City, they became one of my all-time top ten artists. They announced a U.S. tour and this was my chance to finally see them in full from start to finish.
Hello again, Saint Vitus! The last time I was here was when Hospital Productions’ Alberich and headliners Consumer Electronics performed. That’s a night still fresh in my head and a memorable show that was. Driver’s license, ticket app-, and vaccine card all good to go. As it was Saint Vitus, I also had an eye out for venue owner Christopher Enriquez who is also known for his Age Of Quarantine video podcasts. Hands-down the best there ever was because he interviewed Azar Swan, Boy Harsher, Kris Esfandiari, Kanga, White Ring, Unsane’s Chris Spencer and others, but alas, he was nowhere to be found. The doors opened at 7PM and either people waited behind the bar, observed the merch-tables where the young metal girl with an Angel Olsen cut was selling Portrayal Of Guilt shirts, or slowly progressed to general admission where Body Void were slowly building their soundchecks. I come on in and, wow, I don’t remember the venue being this small? It had to be no more than 25-by-25 feet standing space. But it’s New York City. Smaller spaces is what tenants excel at for better or wor$e.
I see show-goers and their denim vest / t-shirt allegiances of Bathory, Skinny Puppy, Self Defense Family, Today Is The Day, Impalers, Failure and more slowly pouring in. One guy wore a Steely Dan Aja shirt and that shit was revolutionary given the setting. All this while Godflesh’s “Suction” was playing in the background. Not many of them were wearing masks so I assumed we’re going in with good faith. After about a half-an-hour of approvals and another ten-minute wait, Body Void finally took the stage to get things going. Formerly from San Francisco and now Vermont, Body Void delivered their brand of hard-stomping, trudging, slow-pull teardown of sludge, doom, and black metal. Willow Ryan (in transition) sported a rainbow / LGBTA guitar strap as she screamed ear-rattling blood-curdling delicious gore that would cast your  withering long-haired mother and all her daughters into a inescapable confusing void for all eternity. Drummer Edward Holgerson’s ever-changing facial expressions told of unease, fright, and disgust as he blasted on through his kit. (Another member of theirs was also present on-stage but he was additional touring personnel. Forgive us if I can’t pony up their names.) The audience was at a standstill and entranced for most of Body Void’s set as some of their songs went more than 10 minutes; save for a few moments where Holgerson sped it up and and had heads going. Overall, Body Void got the win.
Portrayal Of Guilt sounded familiar to me, though I realized that I might have chanced them but didn’t air them on Omega WUSB. After their set, I fucking will now. The Austin trio of James Beveridge (bass), vocalist / guitarist Matt King, and a shirtless Alex Stanfield (drums) threw their amalgam of hardcore, screamo, and black metal to the mix. They tore it up and killed it to shreds. All seemed still and in stasis in the crowd until we loosened up and banged our heads a little harder. It wasn’t until halfway in the set when the pit opened up and broke out into our first of many shoving matches and human pinball games. On video it doesn’t look like much but see it up front and personal to experience the real grit of it. Or am I undershooting? Shockingly, no teeth were dislodged, piercings ripped out, or expensive cameras were knocked out in the process. What a miracle. Portrayal Of Guilt had us focused, and with their tempo changes and even some vaporwave interstitials kept their otherwise flesh-tearing doom-and-gloom interesting all throughout.
As Portrayal Of Guilt tore their gear down for Uniform, someone noticed my Whitehouse Psychopathia Sexualis shirt. He introduced himself to me and commended me on representing true-blue first-generation industrial-noise. OK, I’ll take that. I’m one of the very few on Long Island who walks around wearing them. His slurred speech and a tall can of Pabst Blue Ribbon in hand assured me that it’ll take him 30 seconds to complete a sentence. A mention of how it was Nine Inch Nails’ 30th anniversary of Pretty Hate Machine and questions of “how are Uniform and are they good?” and “you think I should get earplugs?” meant this was now an unnecessary conversation. Some things are best left forgotten about. But Revolting Cocks’ “Do Ya’ Think I’m Sexy?” was playing on the p.a. so that made the moment much more bearable.
Uniform finally arrived to cap off the night and started to go. After 6 1/2 years of waiting to see them in their entirety, I finally got it. Under normal circumstances, they’d already play material from their latest album Shame. The pandemic has subsided and venues have opened up once again. Now’s their time. Uniform brought new touring reinforcements with them. Impalers’ Mike Sharp wasn’t there and Zombi’s Steve Moore at one point was enlisted as bassist but there was a change-up, so there’s two hired guns on bass and drums making the outfit a four-piece for the very first time. (Again, no names listed or found anywhere so forgive us again.)
First off: “Life In Remission”. They just let it fly right out of the gate. If you heard it on record, you know it’s industrial metal’s most devastating moment of this decade so far. In person, you see Michael Berdan go wild in all of his physical and mental madness. It’s too bad the opener didn’t end in those explosive drum blasts and that’s way too much for me to ask. They played more from Shame such as the title track and its opener “Delco”. They parsed through The Long Walk and Wake In Fright with “The Walk” and other out-of-control salvos of chaotic energy and walls of sound. Ben Greenberg’s fired nothing but riffs of thick toxic black smoke because they were that heavy. Their remaining live personnel held their own.
For a good 50 minutes, Uniform showed everyone at Saint Vitus how fucked up and tilted today’s political, social, and mental climate is. Their hard-as-nails display of industrial, metal, drum machines, and even walls of noise showed that underneath the spectacle, there’s nothing nice or forgiving about the all-or-nothing winner-take-all behavior of greed, consumerism, and dependency. With their first stop in their home court of Brooklyn, Uniform is carrying the flag throughout their tour and come back in Berdan’s former home town of Philadelphia. What a proper send-off and thanks we gave them.
Usually at show’s end, I’d leave the venue immediately and high-tail it to whatever alphabetical or numerical line back to Penn Station. Not this time. Merch- was on my mind. I knew a band tee and Wake In Fright was on the market; two things I’ve been meaning to buy for a while. So I ruffle my way from the back, through the bar, and to the merch- table where Mike Berdan was. Only five minutes of waiting and now it’s my turn. Read closely and learn how it’s really done.
We greeted each other hello. I asked Mike if he had any copies of York Factory Complaint’s Lost In The Spectacle. That was his previous (noise) project before Uniform. Sadly, he didn’t have any and said I’d have to go to Dais Records for that. (Former member of York Factory Complaint Ryan Martin owns the label.) Shucks. In that case, I went for a small shirt and Wake In Fright on vinyl. “Thirty dollars!” he says. Sold. I handed him my money and genuinely thanked him for all the projects he and Ben have ever done (Believer/Law, Drunkdriver, Coca Leaf, and The Men to name a few). I also told him that I supported everything they did on my radio show and he super-thanked me. I have never come across such a nicer guy than the energetic Mike. Here’s an outfit who gets it and communicates with their fans in a non-generic way; and someone who’s totally appreciative, grateful, and thankful for their fans and the support they give them / him…unlike some other industrial acts we know (Hi, Ministry! It’s us! Pick up your phone!) We bumped fists and I left Saint Vitus feeling like the happiest man on the fucking planet.
That, my friends, is how you support the artists directly. It’s the only way that’s better than Bandcamp: giving your money hand-to-hand to the very musicians you came to see.
I needed it. I really fucking needed it. I needed to come visit Greenpoint to tell myself once again where I should be and who I want to be associated with. It’s not everyday I do this for a day and leave behind depression’s repetitive toxic thoughts behind. It’s up there in the top three nights in New York City ever spent. The alphabet lines, the quiet nighttime walks down the city streets, the camaraderie. It’s back. A disastrous last year might have ruined our souls and forced most of us in solitude but, damn, it feels fucking great to do it again. With the rate of things such as my health, due diligence, and staying in touch with yourself only going up, that trophy is in my sights once more.

Zajok a nappaliból – Traxelektor 2021 07
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
A brit psy-surf banda Japanese Television tavaly megjelent III. albumából remixelt EP 5 szerzeményéből 4 traxelektált lett, Gabriel Gurnsey (Factory Floor), James Welsh (Rise), John Paynter és James Lavelle (UNKLE) remixeiből.
Tumblr media
A Traxelektorban az UNCLE két „Reconstruction”-nel is nevezett – a másik Krust - Hegel Dialec-jéé - és mindkettő tökéletesen a James Lavelle védjeggyel ellátott felső polcos csoda.
youtube
Egészen székbesüppedően komoly sci-fi-horror albumot sikerült Kevin Richard Martin-nak megalkotnia. A lemezborító impozáns. Az 1972-es Tarkovszkij filmklasszikusra utaló Return to Solaris anyagot 2020 májusában a belga Gent-ban található Vooruit Arts Centre invitálására rögzítette Kevin, akit The Bug néven, vagy a King Midas Sound színeiben, csapatban rendre hallhattok a Traxelektorban (is). A hét egyik kellemetlen szubjektív élménye, hogy melóból hazafelé az utcán fülbe randomban/krosszfédben elindított félkész traxelektorból dj random besorsolta az albumzáró Reject of Earth-öt, ami a hat perc végére inkább volt érzésre Reject of Brain.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Hőmérsékletileg, műfajilag hasonló, bár jóval intenzívebb ambient élményt kínál a The Transcendence Orchestra - All Skies Have Sounded albumával.
A nyitó szerzemény 13 perces Something Tells Me / Pour Out Like Water bizonyos szakasza miatt fülbemászó kategóriás, miközben sorban hozza fent említetteket. Ráadásul a Departing Like Rivers egyre jobban érik a hallgatások alatt, ezt a másik két traxelektorolt műnél is megfigyeltem - The Light That Was Hidden, The Turbulent Sea - ami a mély, finoman rétegzett albumokat jellemzi.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

The Jerry Cans
Whether they come from Ladakh, Nunavut, or Detroit, the albums featured in this instalment of our bite-sized review column managed to catch our ears. Whether jazz, techno, or just plain unclassifiable, maybe they'll catch yours too. Contributions from Bill Meyer, Ian Mathers, Olivia Bradley-Skill, Justin Cober-Lake, and Eric McDowell.
Aaron Dilloway — The Gag File (Dais)
The Gag File by Aaron Dilloway
Is The Gag File a compilation of jokes or a compendium of emetic influences? The album cover’s image of a ventriloquist’s dummy may suggest the former, but this is show business of a particularly queasy bent. Slowed-down vocal and rhythm loops mix with a chorus of whistles to distinctly uneasy effect. A narcotized narrator assures the listener that “It’s alright” over and over, sinking into a miasma of sci-fi synths that give way to a party where everyone sounds too wasted to perform the sexual act prescribed by the Little Feat song on the hi-fi. Paradoxically the passages where Dilloway gets his noise ya-yas out are the moments of relief, since they invite you to bang your head in time to the locked grooves and spliced tapes rather than think about what’s really going on.

Kelly Lee Owens - s/t (Smalltown Supersound)
youtube
There are plenty of wonderful first albums out there, and also plenty of wonderful, let’s say, fifth albums; what’s significantly rarer than either of those on their own is a debut that has the quiet self-assurance and comfort in its own skin that’s much more typical of those great fifth albums. All of which is to say that Kelly Lee Owens is the kind of great first album that’s seemingly leapfrogged over the typical stumbling blocks you often get with early work. Owens uses deceptively simple elements as a producer, and manages to range all over the place stylistically and structurally (even in terms of the genres she evokes; while this is pretty much all electronic, even dance music, at times she brings to mind the gentler end of shoegaze or twee pop or any number of other things) while still feeling like a coherent emotional and sonic statement. She’s no more sui generis than any artist, moments here strike sparks off the likes of anyone from the Field to Glasser or the namechecked-here Arthur Russell, but she always has her own distinct voice. For someone who’s just getting started, it’s an incredibly accomplished and captivating one.

Various Artists — Where the Mountains Meet the Sky: Folk Music Of Ladakh (Sublime Frequencies)
Where the Mountains Meet the Sky: Folk Music of Ladakh by [see album description]
You can’t head much farther north than Ladakh and still be in in India. In times past the Himalayan region was on the Silk Road trade route, but now it has been isolated by the closure of the border between India and China. Folk culture is languishing, and this LP fits into the lifelong effort of one man, Morup Namgyal, to document it before it passes. Five of the record’s tracks come from his collection, the rest from more recent recordings made to accompany a film about him called The Sound Collector. Where the Mountains Meet the Sky could fairly have been put out under Namgyal’s name, since he sings on eight out of nine vocal selections. But even though his throaty voice puts the songs across quite effectively, focusing on him misses the point; it’s the survival of the songs that matters, not the identity of the singer. The instrumental accompaniment (tablas, drums, flutes and a double reed instrument called a surna) is sparse, and hard to fix to a single tradition, with droning timbres and irregular beats that sound fairly Indian coexisting with melodies and rhythms that feel closer to Tuvan folk music.

Tiny Vipers — Laughter (Ba Da Bing)
After two albums of hauntingly spare and direct folk-adjacent music as Tiny Vipers, the last in 2009, Jesy Fortino took a break to get a civil engineering degree. Now she’s back, but in a form significantly altered enough to match the magnitude of the change in her life; where once Fortino’s voice and acoustic guitar were foregrounded, here there’s none of the latter and precious little of the former. Instead Laughter features synthesizers and tape hiss, arpeggios and loops. The result is just as captivating as those older Tiny Vipers records, but in an entirely new sense, where the songs are as dense as “The Summer of Moments” or as tentatively beautiful as “Crossing the River of Yourself”. “K.I.S.S.” indicates that Fortino can make these kinds of songs work with her lyrics and vocals just as well as with her old setup, so the real question this fascinating, exploratory effort leaves the listener with is whether she will wind up following its lead and integrating these sounds and structures with the strong lyrical viewpoint of past work, or if the more abstract and experimental likes of the 14-minute title track are a more accurate indicator of where she’s going.

ADULT. — Detroit House Guests (Mute)
youtube
ADULT.’s music summons nocturne sleeplessness, paranoia, and meditation. In Detroit House Guests, the hyperactive and anxious dance music of their last album, The Way Things Fall (2013), has given way to a more trance-like, hazy sway. Wide-awake restlessness and solitude permeate through its emphasis on repetition, reverb and echo. Yet despite the album’s circular and looping approach to melody, the album isn’t stuck in any one direction. The duo worked with a number of collaborators, who include Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens), Michael Gira (Swans), Lun_na Menoh, Douglas J McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb), Dorit Chrysler (NY Theremin Society), and Shannon Funchess (Light Asylum). Their added presence is felt, in a good way, through the album’s wider sound and scope. ADULT. feels less insular than it has in the past, and reminds us of the various textures the nighttime can hold. By not restricting itself to the headspace of the club, ADULT. experiments with a myriad of energies that span from jittery insomnia to fertile dreams, between dusk, twilight and pitch black skies. Favorite tracks: “P rts M ss ng”, “Uncomfortable Positions”, “As You Dream”.

The Jerry Cans — Inuusiq (Aakuluk)
The Jerry Cans would appear to be a highly localized act. They come from Nunavut in northern Canada, sing mostly in the Inuit language Inuktitut, utilize local throat singing, and even started the first record label in their territory. Far from being a “welcome to global cultures” lesson, the band demonstrates how to skillfully build a world of sounds. The music on their latest album Inuusiq centers on traditional folk and roots-rock sounds, almost always maintaining a high level of energy (the album’s English title is Life, after all). Their Celtic influence comes through with both the fiddle and rollicking approach to performance. “Maikliqta” brings a personalized element of reggae, but it doesn’t sound out of place next to the hoedown of “Paniarjuk.” With touches of pop around the edges of its songs, the band just sounds full of gas and ready to go. The language might not always translate easily, but good roots is good roots.

Bottle Tree — s/t (International Anthem)
Bottle Tree by Bottle Tree
Keeping up its reputation as a champion of local talent, International Anthem presents the self-titled debut album by the Windy City trio Bottle Tree, featuring Ben Lamar Gay, A.M. Frison and Italian transplant Tmmaso Moretti. As the 7” single “Open Secret” first attested, this isn’t quite the Ben Lamar Gay we sampled on the 2015 compilation Nine/Two at Constellation, nor the one in assistance on Jaimie Branch’s recent standout debut, also on International Anthem. For Bottle Tree’s spare and funky soul persona, he trades cornet for keys and compositional duties, keeping his presence largely behind the scenes or else in the middle ground, as a buffer of sorts between Frison’s fluid vocals and Moretti’s clattering, twitchy beats. Over the cassette’s 30 minutes, the trio gets significant mileage out of contrasted layers, deft structural pivots and sudden harmonic cadences. While fans of Frison’s Coultrain project will find lots to like on this nimble, grooving and mellow gem, Bottle Tree is the perfect opportunity for everyone else to get to know these three important and too far under-the-radar Chicagoans, too.
