Happy New Year from JamieBamberDaily!

As a new year approaches, it’s time for our annual review of Jamie and his year!

The early months were quiet and it wasn’t until March that the first thing came in the form of a brilliant interview with Mark & Me Podcast. Earlier in the month, both Jamie and Kerry joined Kerry's former Bad Girls co-star Vicky Alcock at her acting class. According to a post over Christmas, "Jamie came to join us at Acting Up having written a fantastic screenplay 🤫 He shared his work with the actors- we did a full tableread then improvised some of the scenes over the month. Kerry Norton and Jamie then came back to watch what the actors had created. They were extremely impressed by their creativity, focus and understanding. Both Jamie and Kerry gave them advice, experience and understanding of what is required within the industry."

April was a busier month for Jamie. He celebrated his 49th birthday which we once again marked with a birthday video. The following couple of days saw Jamie travel over to Cannes to appear at the 5th Canneseries Festival with Lucie Lucas and Tamara Marthe to discuss his upcoming role in Cannes Confidential. Then April 21st saw the release of Titanic 666 on Tubi TV, the film was released exactly 110 years to the day of the original sinking of the Titanic.

May was also a chaotic month for Jamie and his work. May 2nd saw the release of the first episode of two of Jamie’s projects which were filmed last year; Signora Volpe and DI Ray. DI Ray continued for the following three days on ITV and Signora Volpe episodes released the next two Mondays. Also on the same day, Jamie started the first day filming of Cannes Confidential.

June was less busy, with only the announcement of his involvement on the judging panel of the Faber’s inaugural Imagined Futures Prize.

Filming on Cannes Confidential finished in late July after a incredible 3 month shoot. While DI Ray released on DVD in the UK.

A quiet few months followed until late October when horror film, The Lair released in the US after a few rounds at a few film festivals including FrightFest in London.

Finally, December saw the announcement of not one, but two Jamie roles for the new year. BBC’s spin-off to Death In Paradise, Beyond Paradise which he filmed around September-November in Cornwall, and Who Is Erin Carter (also known as Palomino) which was filmed in Barcelona, Spain in mid-to-late August. Also in that month Jamie returned to the stage for one night only in Uncle Glen’s Menagerie which took place at the Arcola Theatre in London, the event was in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.

We are very much looking forward to Jamie’s projects to come in 2023, and with three announced already to come, we’re sure it’s going to be another busy year for him!

Also since the fool is a journey's beginning I'd almost want to pick Nile for it. As well there are four characters who commonly have swords (or an axe but close enough) and cards have four corners. So one sword each corner, nicky, joe, andy, and quyhn.

So. Someone has good ideas. Here’s the post that prompted these asks. This made me pull out my tarot deck and go through the cards. Below the cut is a break down of the entire tarot deck. There will be an explanation of the (standard) interpretation of the cards, good then less good, and then my associated headcannon (or more than one if I couldn’t decide). The source is my experience with tarot. I’m trying to minimize repeats, but historic and modern Old Guard members are counted separately. Enjoy.

The Major Arcana (aka the cards most people have heard about)

0. The Fool - the seeker. Naivety. Courage. Living in the moment. Journey’s beginning. All paths available. Folly. Apathy.

Nile. Anon convinced me. Though Booker has got the folly, apathy, and madness down, Nile is ultimately the beginning. She’s naïve but headstrong, and quite frankly a perfect match.

I. The Magician - the trickster. Power, skill, talent. Mastery, self-control, willpower. Subtlety. Divine connection and inspiration. Self-reliant.

Modern Nicky. Definitely Nicky. Just. He’s a formerly very religious man who just says these things. Also sniper.

II. The High Priestess - the moon goddess. Intuition, wisdom, foresight, divination, prophecy. Enlightenment, understanding, intelligence, education. Pride, emotional instability, unforgiving.

Historic Quynh. Her name means “night-blooming flower”, which is very moon goddess vibes to me. Also, I’d say over 500 years in a box turns understanding and enlightenment into emotional instability and unforgiveness.

III. The Empress - the queen. Feminine power, matriarch, mother. Fertility, pleasure, beauty. Success, evolution, movement. Marriage, wealth. Overattachment, domestic upheaval, delay.

Quynh. The counterpart to Andy’s emperor card.

Nile. Let’s be honest, she’s going to take over from Andy some day.

IV. The Emperor - the king. Masculine power, patriarch, father. Authority, leadership, proficiency. Wealth, stability, effectiveness. Perseverance, logic, endurance, experience. Lack of ability, weak character, immature, rebellious.

Modern Andy. She is the leader who’s short-comings effect her entire team. And who doesn’t love a little gender bending? (and her film look is already soft butch)

V. The Hierophant - the religious leader. Tradition, convention, ritual symbolism. Ceremony, religion, morality, philosophy. Mercy, goodness, forgiveness, humility, vulnerability, Impotence, Religious tyranny.

Historic Nicky. I mean, former priest (enough said).

Historic Andy. “I was once worshipped as a god” (enough said).

VI. The Lovers - the lovers. Love, attraction. Compatibility, harmony, choice.  Triumph over trials, vacillation. Entanglement, enmeshment. Infidelity, moral lapse, vice, separation, quarrels, inadequacy, failing tests.

Andromaquynh. *peeks out from behind barricade* I know that most people would just put Kaysanova as this card, but look at all the negatives it is associated with. Sounds a lot more like our immortal wives can really cover the gamut. They have the range....I am a sucker for Kaysanova, though. Even though the beginning of their relationship is rocky, I’d like to think it’s been fairly constant over the years. But let’s reverse the uhaul lesbians and fickle gay men tropes! Sorry, Book of Nile fans. That ship just isn’t established enough for this, I’d say. Maybe one day?

VII. The Chariot - the journey. Ordeal, obstacles, competition. High stakes, ambition, discipline. Conquest, victory, greatness. Right action prevails, overwhelming odds, sudden defeat.

Merrick and/or Dr. Kozak. I mean, this is literally their characters in a nutshell. Merrick is the journey/ordeal for the old guard. He is driven by his ambition, thinks he’s won over impossible odds, and then has a sudden defeat.

VIII. Justice - the balance. Equilibrium, equality, symmetry, harmony. Integrity, honor, fairness, neutrality, moderation. Vindication, self-righteousness, bigotry, prejudice, favoritism.

Nile. This is the woman with a sword card. She brings a balance to the team, she clearly moderates conflict, and I’d love to see BLM art of her in this style. Just sayin.

IX. The Hermit - the seeker-sage. Wisdom, inspiration, contemplation, discretion, understanding. Safety, protection, spiritual quest. Seeking truth and justice. Self-denial, timidity, fear.

Historic Joe. The idealized warrior poet? Definitely just a form of the hermit. Helps explain why a Magrebhi trader/artist fought at the Siege of Jerusalem: spiritual quest. I also like the idea of Joe having a secret reserved side.

X. The Wheel of Fortune - cycles of life. Destiney, evolution and progress, advancement. Manifestation, unexpected events. Success, sudden luck. Ups and downs.

Modern Quynh. There is nothing that better encapsulates her storyline than the wheel of fortune. One day you’re roaming the world with your immortal wife. The next, you’re drowning for over 500 years. The next you’re in Booker’s shitty Paris apartment.

XI. Strength - fortitude. Resilience, courage, resolve, confidence. Integrity, moral victory, endurance. Energy, action, vitality. Power, force, violence. Abuse of power, disgrace, impotence.

Lykon. Do I love this character beyong measure and reason? Maybe so. We have so little to go on about him, however, that the only things we do know bely his strengths. Also, he becomes ultimately the weakest when he dies and encapsulates both “extremes” of the card.

XII. The Hanged Man - the tested. Delay, sacrifice, abandonment, rejection. Betrayal. Reversals, restrained or bound, limbo, trials. Falseness.

Booker. If the fact that his first death was by hanging didn’t convince you? Read that description again. His character arc is literally working through being the hanged man.

XIII. Death - the loss or parting. Alteration, transformation, transition. Boredom, depression, stagnation, failure or disaster. Bereavement, recovery, immobility.

Lykon. He literally represents the fear of death to the remaining immortals. It is HE that they invoke when they discuss it. Also, I’m still mourning my favorite underdeveloped character.

XIV. Temperance - the moderation. Self-control, economy, patience, coordination. Consolidation, harmony, friendship, recuperation. Unfulfilled desires, discord, stubbornness, hostility, clashing of interests. Time, seasons, and climate.

A Safehouse. I don’t think any of the people really capture the tempered essence of this card, the constancy throughout all seasons of life. An actual physical building that rises and falls with (regular) humanity, though, seems to do the trick.

XV. The Devil - the arcane. Magic, strange occurrences, prophecy, fate. Catastrophe, downfall, negative attitude, Temptations, sins, obsessions. Enslavement, bondage, misplaced loyalty, violence, fatality.

Honestly? I’m so torn. I feel like a major commentary of the movie is that our demons are the way people react more so than the people themselves. Maybe the armored van?

XVI. The Tower - the House of God. Disruption, expulsion from an earthly paradise, divine wrath. Punishment (of pride), loss, destructive rivalry, plans ruined. Need to start again, bankruptcy.

The Iron Coffin. While this doesn’t capture the religious undertones quite right, the coffin is the Tower for Andromaquynh, It is (divine? or very human?) wrath brought on by pride since the two probably thought that they would be fine. It is loss and painful new beginnings.

XVII. The Star - the bright promise. Hope, faith, light of the spirit. Recovery, symbols of immortality. Gifts, good prospects, new dawn, frustrated expectations.

Nile. The new immortal, enough said.

Historic Andy/Lykon. In a way, the first immortal would also be a great choice of representation.

XVIII, The Moon - the hidden forces. Twilight, illusion, deception, trickery. Dishonesty, danger, uncertainty, terror. Developments, particularly somewhat concealed. Errors, powerful feelings.

Copley. I know, I know. “He’s the moon when I’m lost in darkness” and all that jazz. But look at this card’s interpretation and notice it’s pretty negative. Copley’s entire role is to pull the strings behind the scenes. He makes headway on problems in secrets, he lies and deceives everyone in the film at some point.

XIX. The Sun - the work’s rewards. Daylight, co-creation, union “of male and female”. Peace, joy, pleasure, love, contentment. Accomplishment, achievement, success. 

Joe. Not only is he the sun, he also fits this card perfectly. He is creation and happiness. Enough said.

XX Judgement - the rebirth. Judgement, sentence. Rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection, call to the new from the old, rehabilitation. Creation, promotion.

Historic Booker. I feel like his backstory with his family helped highlight the theme of rebirth for the Old Guard. They must be willing to give up what they have left behind to move forward. Also, there’s the more literal play as well since Booker was a conscripted criminal.

XXI The World - the long journey. Perfection, completion, conclusion. Power through intelligence and wisdom. The universe and the material world.

A group photo, of course! Beyond that? Who knows.

Historic Andy? She’s seen so much of it. Like just her eyes portray the history of the world.

The Minor Arcana (aka the rest of the cards)

Since most people are only familiar with the major arcana,  I’ll just briefly explain it. The minor arcana are actually the majority of a tarot deck. There are four suits associated with the four elements. Each suit has ten number cards and four court/face cards (traditionally modelled either based on one person or different interpretations of similar costuming). Each number or face has its own meaning, each suit has its own meaning, and their combination mostly explains what the card should be interpreted as. Quite frankly, the minor arcana are vastly underrated in popular understandings of tarot.

Suit of Wands - fire. Spontaneity, action, passion, adrenaline, life force, stroke of genius.

Guns? It’d be a bit of a niche take, but I associate guns with fires.

Staffs? More traditional in shape.

Suit of Coins - earth. Solid growth, material interests, possessions, profit, business, labor, slow and considerate.

Historic currency. Enough said.

Suit of Cups - water. Heartfelt involvements, imagination, spirituality, love, friendship, family.

Fountains around the world. Enough said.

Suit of Swords - air. Worry, trouble, boundaries, objectivity, the power of truth.

Obviously, their weapons of choice. I would go into more detail about who best represents each number, but I don’t want to bore you.

Court of Kings - mature men. Leaders, authority, status-quo, taking responsibility.

Again, most tarot is very gendered. But members in tuxes?

Court of Queens - mature women. Reflective and active, concerned with security/foundations, supportive, focused.

Members in dresses/gowns/anything that glitters?

Court of Knights/Cavaliers - young men. Dynamic, adventurous, intensive, revolutionary.

Tactical gear. Or historical armor. But it’s easier to do tactical gear right than accidentally draw a 15th century helmet on a 14th century suit of armor.

Court of Knaves/Pages - younger women, teenagers, and children. Students, apprentices, trainees, messengers, new opportunities.

Casual clothes.

10:10 a.m. a cold and rainy day - just put in 12 of you, one by one into Bcc - perhaps I should go to contacts, where I have noticed list is offered - who knows - I might even figure out how to do a list. Have been writing letters to some of you how horribly frustrating it is to be 84 and needing help for every small step - two year olds jiust do it - well I remember in Prague watching old women standing on top of an escalator not daring to use it - and the subways were built by Russian, very deep, very fast escalators - I never checked are there even stairs, or an elevator. In New York a group called I believe active disabled have achieved getting a lot of elevators - that I too prefer at Hudson Yards - on the New York West Side, West 34th Street where a millionaire paradise is going up - hundred of apartments costing millions - builders do not care if many stand empty, it's an investment for all the money they've made on our many wars - but a subway to get there was built at great cost, very deep, you need three fast escslators and especially at times when I reluctantly use a rolling suitcase - I am scared on these escalators. The reason I've been going there is to use Megabus to Amherst - that started out on 8th avenue, several buses a day, $10 for the ride, I was always offered a soap box to sit on, escorted first on the bus - then it went to 9th, then to 10th, now it's on 11th, almost in the river, nothing to sit on, no shelter from rain or sun, one or two buses a day - the 9 o'clock bus comes from Vermont and goes to 32nd and 7th ave to let passengers off and ast best is by 10 to take on waiting passengers who are urged to be 30 minutes early, so have been standing 90 minutes in rain, snow, hot sun - the young seem to love it - hardly made for a woman at 84 - and the cost now $20 plus - a very secret phone number to reserve, $5 extra - the young on their smart phones, reserve, csncel, reserve again, flash their cell phone - I am given on the phone about 20 numbers and the driver is hesitant to let me on - brace new world. Only for the most intrepid of the disabled in wheel chairs - but access they must be given, first, holds things up another 15 minutes - and it's only for the feisty - but - there are some some. In nyc indents for the disabled have been made at every side walk crossing - mostly used by zooming bicycles, now the silently motorized by battery, considered eco friendly - no bicycle in nyc ever has a bell, they zoom at top speed by you grazing you - many disabled scooters also go at some 25 miles an hour - buses travel at 5 miles an hour, terrible congestion - then of course there are the fast roller scaters, scate boards, also motorized by now - it is a pretty wild city - Steve W. assured me: they have better reflexes than you have - I hope so - terrorized jumping out of their way - which is said to be wrong. Almost every body I know has gotten hit - a miracle I have not been hit yet. Well. all my virtuous friends - good decent people who don't write horrible stuff - are in church at this moment, confessing to God they are sinners - I think in Latin something like mea culpa, mea grandissima culpa, in Polish - their churches are full - moje vyna, moje vyna, in English I have sinned, greatly sinned - in Germany I've most rarely been to church and then it was still Latin in the Catholic churches - well I guess it's a good idea to confess to your brothers and sisters whst a great sinner you are and asking God for forgiveness. When I was in Prague people still confessed to a priest - and when my Catholic childhood friends went to their first confession they were given a list of sins to confess and I puzzled with them what adultery meant - and a number of others sins helping them to figure out what they should confess. Still, I was envious of them, they were in the vast majority, I was alone, an outsider - and alone and an outsider I am to this day. A lonely sinner. I hope confessing on what now is a blog - though I still need Molly to help ignorant old me figure out how to tell people how to get to the blog, she sent me written instructionsd I cannot figure out - terribly frustrating. Our first two sessions were wonderfully long sessions and I learned so much talking to this wise far beyong her years 23 year old - and mistakingly believed she had more time than she does - volunteering, working three job, performing and time consuming travel from and to Brooklyn. I just wrote to her - yes, skeletal Ken was wonderful and we loved our long Thursday afternoons - he came at 12 and left at 7 - alas he was already deadly ill when he first came - and Molly is young and strong and brilliant. Ken, Ken - how many times did he show me to write this in word, to double space it, how to transfer from word to email - yes, the two year olds do it with ease - and I - well I love computers - but my senses alas are not really geared to them. In theory I know it all - practice is something else. Our Goethe also had something a bout grey theory and difficult practice. It's freezing here - I have a shawl my daughter in law knitted for me on my knees I am wearing a down jacket and still, my hands are cold. How could such a terrible heating system ever been constructed - I've long expected stupidity to become the end of mankind. Oh yes, and by the way, yesterday's blog ended in the middle of a word - C.B. m - because suddenly the weirdest images appeared, I had no idea how to get rid of them and reminded me of a woman called Susie, she has died, who believed the computer actually being God and giving her important mussages - well I was about to write something possibly nasty about C.B.and the wise computer put a fasrt end to it and I quickly sent what was there before that might disappear altogether - I was much calmer writing on my wonderful Olivetti Lettera - what I had written was there on paper, reliably - and then I would go to the the copy shop and make 50 copies and then I had 50 labels and always bought interesting stamps - and one German friend ? would return the letter, grammer corrected, underlined in red and in big letters: do not send any more of these horrible mass mailings - send a letter addressed to me. Well, at least I heard from her - two or three might respond - yet often much later I would meet one in the street, enthusiastically embracing me and telling me how wonderful my letter had been and please send more - and so - when Ken came into my life and at least learned email I loved with a click to be able to send it to hundreds - and now that it is a blog, that Ken warned me of - Ken, I promise to be careful My hands are freezing. Many of you even if you started probably have long stopped reading. I should be in church. But with no one to talk to - and when I love talking, I do love talking and have many times been told to shut up - and please, either get depressed again or take pills that will make you shut up - have you no shame - do you ever listen to anyone  else - and as it happens, I do. I am aware I am loved for listening, not for talking. This has been made amply clear to me by the virtuous - who love to hear their own important voices - they are saying something of meaning and importance - not babble by an old biddy - and if I may so, I have a lot more kind interest in people than I do. What still went through my mind - using initials rather than names, to be cautious as Ken recommended - this is turning into something like a roman a clef - there is a key as to who C.B. is, who M.H. is - and many I won't even mention by initial - those whose friend I want to remain. Perhaps not the best of times to go public with my writing - but then again luckily I'm still the tiniest of fish - even though not long ago cops stopped me on an empty road in New Hampshire - emptied by the bypass that was made - and when ignorant me began to open the door of my rented car with Massachusetts plated - two jumped out of their cars guns drawn, yelling - do not move - when I produced my driver's licence they sneered: New York driver, no wonder she csnnot drive - caution stopped them from commenting on the Jewish name - then I was interrogsted, where was I coming from, what was I doing on this road, where I was going, my answers producing sneers, then the disappeared into their car to study me on their computer, ordering me not to move - some 30 or more minutes later returned: we are bering kind to you and letting you go away with a warning - I much thanked them and as humbly as I could muster asked what sin I had commited: you made an illegal turn. I had been on a small road only used by locals, had passed some bored high school kids, they had called the cops - all of them totally bored - enjoying to find a danferous old woman with an accent - and being so wonderfully kind and professional - keeping America safe! Yes, you can be white, Protestant, I was baptized Lutheran as a precaution in 1943 - an American - but this is a country of xenophobis and I had another very unpleasant incident of that sort on a train heading for New York - where I was tsken for a German tourist - I always have my passport on me - when I produced it, great suspicion it was fake. Well, I was still going to comment on those in church - they have told me I am too loud, too self centered, too overbearing, a nasty maniac - she writes!!!! - yes I write, and with no one to talk to I also write about how insulting they are, how heartless, how hurtful - even in nyc - my "friends" are xenophobes, anti-Semites - and what is the word for people who cannot stand old people = there must be some word too. My s5 iPhone rang, 508 - what could that be - Eastern Mass as it turns out - a person who does not want to mentioned in this here blog - and so it goes  - it's noon - I am hungry, but my decoration teeth have fallen out - hopefully tomorrow at 9 either Maggie of the dentist will be there - I can barely drink coffee - all this would never have happened - had I had a good doctor who would have warned me of the side effects of those beta blocker pills whose name I keep forgetting - it seems they keep my veins open to allow the blood to flow to prevent a stroke - but it seems they also acidified my saliva - my dentist told me long ago - three women doctors, all the nurses gave me dire warnings of going off these pills and now I'cve taken them 7 years and and my veins must be used to them - but my teeth are history - until now I've had a bridge - but he said I would havce to go to denture - not a happy prospect - but these keep falling out - not very happy either two Chinese just arrived, speaking this mysterious language  - now a good doctor would have warned me of side effects - also loss of balance, falls - and suggested weight loss, exercise and checking my blood pressure - and I would be in much better shape today - good doctors - a privilege of the rich - who then can boast in what great shape they are at 105.
