Who was going to tell me about the new D&D supplemental rulebook coming out in just over a week called Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants which contains backgrounds, feats, and lore on 70 new giant creatures. Who was going to tell me about the new barbarian subclass where you grow to giant size whenever you rage and gain a special ability to throw your friends during battle.

Who was going to tell me that at level 14 you can grow thirty two feet tall which can easily be turned into SIXTY FOUR feet tall if you have a friend who knows the enlarge/reduce spell???

This is the second book by Wizards of the Coast I had the opportunity to make art for 😃I would like to thank Fer Hernández and Pam Rangel for kindly helping me out with this one as well as my dad, who made a model of the structure for me to use as reference.

Weeeeeee Wizards of the Coast opened a whole fucking can of worms. In the new Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook, Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants, Wizards hired a "freelance artist" to use algorithmic generative tools to "enhance" artwork done by actual freelance artists. A long thread about this follows the link to the news story.

Wizards of the Coast took artwork that was created by other freelance artists and used another "artist" that uses generative AI to "enhance" the artwork. This was done without the knowledge or consent of the original artists.

It should be noted that the artwork in question DID HAVE an actual artist creating it and that the "AI" only performed "enhancements" with some alterations to the art. This means the issue of copyright of art created by generative algorithms is not part of the question here.

However, the issue is this artwork was very likely submitted by the original creators to Wizards months ago, likely no earlier than this past spring before the current hype around algorithmic art kicked into high gear, around the time Wizards was denouncing the use of such tools.

These "AI" programs run off of databases made of scraped artwork, almost all of them unable to provide sources for where they got their artwork and many with founders who do not seem to understand how copyright works (ie Google Images is NOT public domain).

Further, the Terms of Service of these programs mean anything submitted into them is then added to the database to "refine" the algorithm. Again, these systems do not verify if the person submitting them has the legal rights to what they submit to give that permission. They just do it anyway.

So this artwork submitted to Wizards of the Coast before it was widespread for freelance artists to include clauses in their contracts to prevent the artwork's use in generative algorithm databases...was submitted to generative algorithm databases. Without their knowledge.

I'm going to quote what one artist said on another platform: "I feel so genuinely betrayed by WotC [...] Having concepts I worked on ran through a scraping program and turned into slop isn't really how I wanted to spend August."

Wizards of the Coast moved to work-for-hire for most artwork following some licensing issues for early Magic: The Gathering art (though I'm not sure if that applies to D&D art as well), so legally they own the artwork in question and can do what they wish with it...

HOWEVER, being legally allowed to do something does not mean it is ethical or moral to do so. Wizards of the Coast did not even NOTIFY artists they were doing this, meaning they sure as hell didn't compensate the artists appropriately for that level of additional use of their work.

This is akin to Marvel Studios doing 3D scans of background actors recently without informing those actors they were signing over rights to their likeness forever in future projects on the eve of a strike over precisely that issue.

Wizards of the Coast, in allowing an artist to use generative algorithms on the artwork - even if it was just to "enhance" it - has destroyed trust with the freelance art community. Likely dozens of artists had their work fed to the algorithm without their consent.

And to address some defenses I've seen already:

"It was just used to enhance the art, not create it!"

This means the art can be copyrighted. It arguably (and in my opinion) makes it MORE unethical than algorithmic art. If the artwork was created by algorithm, it would only use assets from existing databases. By using it to "enhance" work, it has taken the original art by actual artists and added it to the database without compensation and without their consent or even their knowledge.

"It's just like using any other tool like Photoshop filters!"

Except the original art has been added to the databases of the software companies making these generative algorithms. Photoshop's Diffuse Glow doesn't steal my art and let others make copycats of my work.

"It was work for hire meaning Wizards can do what it wants with the art!"

I addressed this one already but I want to reiterate a point many people in these debates forget:

LEGAL IS NOT THE SAME AS ETHICAL.

Just because you legally CAN do something doesn't make it right.

5E D&D to Pathfinder 1E Conversion: Golden Goose

I'm back with a new creature for all those who might be interested. This time, after taking a look at the 5E expansion book "Bigby Presents: Glory Of The Giants", I was intrigued by several of the new critters, especially by the Giant Goose. So I decided I might as well try to convert it to Pathfinder First Edition, and this is the result. I changed the name somewhat because "Giant Goose" sounded a little unoriginal to me...

Again, if anyone wants to point out mistakes or imbalances I've made, I would be very grateful, since I'm still kind of inexperienced at writing new monsters.

That said, I hope you will enjoy this conversion.

GOLDEN GOOSE

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Golden Egg (Ex): Once per month, as a full-round action and only when commanded by its keeper, a golden goose can lay a golden egg, an hollow shell of gold, 1 foot long and weighing about 2 pounds. The shell is worth 100-400 (1d4 x 100) gp. Sometimes, the egg inexplicably contains some kind of small trinket or minor magic item. The GM can determine the contents of a golden egg by rolling 1d12 and confronting the result with the table below.

1-6 : The egg is empty.

7: The egg is empty, but the inside of the shell is inscribed with a poem or an intricate illustration.

8: A candy egg.

9: A small toy goose that makes a loud honking noise when squeezed.

10: A potion of cure light wounds

11: A scroll of bless

12: An elixir of love

At the GM’s discretion, a golden goose’s egg can be also used to give characters an item that’s important to the story of an adventure or a campaign.

Thunderous Honk (Sp): Once every 1d4+1 rounds, a golden goose can honk with ear-splitting volume. Each creature within 20 feet of the goose (other than the goose itself) takes 2d6 points of sonic damage and is deafened for 1 round. A successful Fortitude save (DC 14) halves the damage and negates the deafened condition. The save DC is Constitution-based.

A magical, oversized version of common, harmless waterfowl, golden geese are rumored to have originated in lands ruled by the faerie. They are often kept by giants as livestock, both for their eggs and because they make for excellent sentries. A golden goose has keen sight and hearing, which allows them to locate unfamiliar creatures with ease, and are capable of emitting loud warning honks that are easily heard in a wide radius. Making them even more valuable is the golden geese’s ability to lay eggs made of pure gold. While the creature is unable to produce more than a single golden egg in a month’s time, gaggles of golden geese kept in captivity can produce a remarkable amount of gold, sometimes even accompanied by a minor magic item or two. However, a golden goose is sapient and will only produce a golden egg if ordered to by a creature it recognizes as its master – at the GM’s discretion, a series of Bluff, Intimidate or Diplomacy checks might be needed in order to be accepted as such by the strong-willed and often unruly creature.

Despite their heightened intelligence, the behavior of golden geese is not much different from that of mundane waterfowl, being gregarious birds that form flocks for mutual protection. They are mostly herbivores, feeding on aquatic plants, weed, roots and grains, but may occasionally integrate their diet with small animals like mice or snakes. Particularly caring masters, usually cloud or storm giants, have been known to share their meals with their favorite golden goose. They tend to pair-bond in long-term monogamous relationships, involving elaborate courtship and displays of affection, and homosexual pairs are not unheard of. A fertile female lays an average of four to six eggs at a time, but fewer eggs or larger numbers are not unusual. Both parents are involved in parental care.

In combat, a golden goose is aggressive and straightforward, opening up with a supernaturally loud honk that will weaken and disorient its victims. Then, it will usually close in on the least-armored opponent and batter it with its beak and wings, honking again as soon as it is able to. Golden geese are not immune to each other’s thunderous honks, and they are smart enough to know that. When more than a single golden goose is met at a time, they will try to position out of their companions’ range and catch opponents in the radius of multiple thunderous honks.

A golden goose is about 9 feet tall, with a wingspan for 16 feet from tip to tip. Their plumage varies in coloration just as much as that of regular geese, but their feathers are always tipped with gold.

Hullo, Gentle Readers. I can’t believe the end of 2022 is upon us already. I wanted to put out this special article as we look ahead into 2023.

It’s getting closer to being a really big year for D&D, as 2024 is the game’s 50th anniversary! I can’t believe that I’ll have been playing the game for 45 of its 50 years! Crazy pants! Even though next year isn’t the big anniversary, there’s lots of cool stuff coming, like Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants, the Book of Many Things, and the return of Planescape! There’ll be lots of playtest material for One D&D, and I’m sure there will be some surprises, too!

Next year will also see the release of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves into theaters in March. I have increasingly high hopes for this movie. I just hope we don’t get hurt again.

On a personal level, this has been a challenging few years, as it has for everyone. And I've had to make a difficult decision. I have two big writing projects I want to get done in the first half of the year. I am going to put the blog on hiatus and use the time I normally spend writing these articles towards this other writing until they're finished.

This is for sure not goodbye. I will still answer Questions from our Denizens, share photos of the upcoming finale of my 12-year D&D campaign, and share news I hear about. I just need to break from the weekly structure until I'm happy with the other writing projects I'm committed to.
