So I had a thought

I've been watching Jason Carl's (long may he reign) Vampire the Mascarade chronicle L.A By Night, and a scene in season two hit me in the feels in a way it had no right to AND made me think of an interesting parallel

In season 2, ep 8 of L.A. By Night the protagonists are sent on a diplomatic mission to try and distract the Camarilla, a sort of totaliratian parallel vampire state while their allies gathered support and rallied the troops. This was as close as it gets to a suicide mission, and it gave this gem of a scene:

I dunno man, but the urge of the two daddest figure of each group to immortalize (lol) their friends/familiy-in-all-but-blood while still in the eye of the storm, in the moment right before the impact, when they can still pretend that they will all come out of it alive ??? The others being very deeply awkward but still humoring Undad Victor and Bestboy Lieutenant Trapp bc despite the cringiness they recognize the gravity of the situation and also want that moment to strech just a bit longer ?????

Nothing better to sell a proper feeling of impeding doom than the idea that the affection these people had for each other will live on in a picture, even if they all most likely don't.

In this, the pilot episode to the South Asian mythology inspired TTRPG actual play, DesiQuest starring @ThatBronzeGirl @sweeetanj @RekhaShankar @omarnajam @SandeepParikh , our adventurers take the perilous journey to pickup one of their squad from the busy port of Chaand Bay. And as most travelers to India can attest to just getting out of the airport can be harrowing. Luis plays a guest character Namir in season 1, episode 2 and 3.

The Men of September   Vampire: The Masquerade - L.A. By Night - Vannevar Thomas (Bryan Dechart)

Okay, so this one is less about the costume, (although it’s very smart!), and more about the way it’s used that I like. Vannevar is not in his right mind, although those around him try to hide the fact to some extent. As such, he starts off very put-together with his smart suit and slicked hair. As the episode goes on and he gets more agitated, the jacket comes off, the sleeves are rolled up, and his hair gets more untidy. The all-black suit has been used before, and likely will again, because it always looks really stylish in a villain-ish sort of way! See Loki in Thor: Ragnarok below.

BG3 but it’s Vampire the Masquerade

Given that VTM is another TTRPG it wasn’t actually all that hard to imagine what clan the BG3 companions would belong to because *game mechanics* and character archetypes but I did it anyways lol. I love the V20 lore for VTM but I prefer some stuff about V5 (especially the fact that the Ravnos aren’t a giant racist stereotype now) so I’ve used both clan names for those that changed between versions.

Karlach - Brujah

This one was actually the hardest for me to decide, I went for Lasombra because Shar lol

One of the first major actual-play organizations to find success outside of Dungeons & Dragons is the World of Darkness, a sultry modern vampire series utilizing the ruleset of 2018’s Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition. Hosted by game designer and lead storyteller for the entire World of Darkness universe, Jason Carl, the rotating cast includes mainstays Alexander Ward, Cynthia Marie, Xander Jeanneret, and voice actor-Dimension 20 regular Erika Ishii.

By deviating from D&D mold, World of Darkness series show a different aspect of the TTRPG experience, with modern stories revolving clandestine factions or “Coteries” of conflicting machinations within the dark underbelly of real-world cities. Spread across multiple independent series, beginning with 2018’s L.A. By Night, which ran for five seasons, and now including off-shoots NY By Night and Seattle By Night, the scope of the world is diverse and ever growing.

The biggest hook that sets the series apart from other actual plays is that it’s one of the few actually supported by the game’s publisher, Paradox Interactive. The impact is that each campaign, although ultimately unscripted by nature, falls within the larger story of the Vampire: The Masquerade universe, being canonically set alongside the various multimedia extensions of the franchise, including video games, books, graphic novels, and more. Tuning into Seattle By Night live play means you’re actually watching the canon being written in real time.

Keeping track of the various properties can be more difficult than with other shows, as each of the brand’s individual series have aired on different platforms. L.A. By Night originally aired on Geek & Sundry’s YouTube channel, where past episodes can be found. NY By Night’s last two seasons can be seen on the official World of Darkness YouTube channel. it was frustrating to watch l.a by night and see new fans not understand why old vampire players found it weird that annabelle never fully experienced repercussions for her actions, when it's notoriously a game full of loss, heartache, failure and dwindling humanity. i guess we don't have to worry about it anymore but still.

Agreed. It's been one of the most frustrating parts of the LA by Night fandom... and not just for Annabelle too. A few years ago, I had a 2 hour long argument on discord with someone who hadn't played VtM over why Jasper abandoned Chloe and how dare he do so. (Apparently, the fact he was a low-humanity Nosferatu and was trying not to break the Masquerade were not good enough reasons for the person I was arguing with. They also refused to believe that her recognizing his handwriting wasn't deliberate on Jasper's part.) Heaven forbid the characters be flawed and make bad decisions sometimes, I guess. lol

i find the repetition of a script really soothing for some reason? i don't know if it's an anxiety thing (i heard that people w anxiety like familiarity) or an autistic thing (has to do with routines - my bet is on this one) but I've been watching a lot of L.A by Night (Vampire the Masquerade 5th Edition - a TTRPG show) and the way that certain phrases are repeated is so nice to me. like 95% is improv, but certain ideas repeat and it feels like home. "(x character) will join at a dramatically appropriate moment" some variation of "In Los Angeles the sun rose, the humans went about their daily tasks, cooking, cleaning, working, living... but you did not. You only awoke as the sun set" cynthia introducing nelli as a "fabulous toreador" of course shout out to "I'll activate awe," "I'll make a note," jasper playing basketball with people's skulls, alex ward doing that hand motion when he actives unseen presence, b dave doing the mind wipe motion with the two fingers, etc. idk. la by night isn't my favorite actual play series that i've watched and it's the first non-dnd one (I literally got into TTRPGs 3 months ago w d20 and CR) but it's the first one where I've felt really grounded in and... comforted by the story. of course I felt things when watching the unsleeping city (only campaign I've finished- just season 1) but it felt more like a foray into new things whereas watching la by night feels more antique, somehow? despite it being a younger game, it's got an older feel; even though i don't understand the exact stats/mechanics as well as I understand D&D's, i have a much easier time imagining myself GMing it didn't mean to turn this into a commentary on anything (esp. with the d&d drama right now lmao) but... these are my thoughts
