Ofc it makes sense for ppl to associate comic runs and eras and defining marks on characters through the writers - and in that way we get spotlights on claremont, Morrison, Hickman, etc as defining xmen writers. But for you, who are the defining / house favorite artists? Kirby natch aside, ofc
In terms of X-Men artists?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dave Cockrum designed most of the All-New X-Men, and as much as I don't like him personally, John Byrne was a huge presence in the first half of the Claremont run.

However, if it comes to my personal favorites I'd go with Paul Smith, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Bill Sienkiewicz.

Comics this week?
A very light week for me. No DC (had to drop Tec and Penguin because of medical bills) and thus I only got Ultimate Spider-Man #4. Hickman was clearly trying to emulate issue 4 of his X-Men run, and while this wasn’t able to match the level of sociopolitical commentary of that issue, I thought it did a great job of fleshing out MJ and Gwen. Can’t tell you how thrilled I was to see that yes, 6160 Gwen is married to Harry. Making Gwen a dark counterpart to MJ the way Harry is for Peter (both her and MJ are CEOs, but MJ is a mom while Gwen is not, and Gwen knows what Harry is doing while Peter hasn’t confessed to MJ yet) is brilliant.
MJ heading up a PR firm and potentially funding “The Paper” screams like setting her up to have the Illuminati come calling to recruit her. She worked for Damage Control, she knows PR, it totally makes sense that the Illuminati would want someone with her skill set to tackle salvaging the ruins of Kingpin’s empire after Peter and Harry take him down. That would also be a way to make Harry’s warning to Peter about how he will not be able to protect his family by keeping them ignorant of his heroics come true, without going for the cliche of killing family members. Hope I’m right with where I’m guessing this is heading, because I want MJ to get involved in a way that makes her important, but doesn’t give her superpowers or fridge her.

Backwash 202, turn right to heading 170.”
Bill responded with typical professionalism: “Backwash 202, Roger, 170.”
What? I turned to a heading of 170 degrees, wondering what was happening.
The next thing I heard only made my heart beat faster: “Backwash 202, your bogey five right, 22.” Bogey?!
Bill, calm as ever, responded, “Backwash 202, roger.”
I learned we had been launched to shoot down a U.S. Air Force U-2.
By 1966, President Johnson had stopped overflying the island of Cuba. They continued flying reconnaissance operations “close” to Cuba; as you may remember, in 1962, during the Cuban missile crisis the Cubans shot down an American officer, Rudolf Anderson. (My neighbor at Beale Air Force Base, Buddy Brown, was slated to be Major Anderson's backup driver if the weather wasn’t clear enough. Buddy's earlier pictures of the island proved that the Russians had planted their ballistic nuclear missiles in Cuba just 90 miles from Florida.)
Rudolf Anderson’s body was recovered and laid to rest at Woodland Memorial Park.
Now, on July 28, 1966, Captain Robert Hickman took off from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana to make a regular over-flight of the island of Cuba. He was told not to violate Cuban airspace.
His U-2 did violate Cuban airspace and flew directly over the island.
Unfortunately, Captain Hickman was dead due to the failure of the aircraft's oxygen supply. He suffered from HYPOXIA. USA Air Force was monitoring this flight and scrambled two 4F Phantoms from Cuba to shoot down the U-2!
They were convinced that the pilot was dead and because they didn’t want another incident over Cuba. They tried to shoot down the U-2, but the U2 was out of range..
Had I shot down his U-2, it certainly could have been filed away as one of those unfortunate incidents that occur in the fog of war. But even knowing that Hickman was already dead, had I shot him down, I would not be telling this story today. Why? Because the aircraft bearing his body would have landed in Cuba, and his wife and six children would not have had his remains to mourn and to bury. I could not have abided that written by John Newlin. He was one of the men tasked to shoot down the U-2.
Hickman’s widow Pauline received the Air metal. She never remarried and raise their six kids alone.
I am glad that U-2 was not shot down. There was no incident. The Cubans didn’t say anything. The next day, farmers in a remote area of Bolivia found the wrecked plane and the remains of its pilot.

Relive the debut appearances of even more pop-culture icons as we celebrate the legacy of the House of Ideas with MARVEL TALES! In INCREDIBLE HULK (1962) #1, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby unveil perhaps their most tragic hero of all. Is the Hulk man, is he monster…or is he both? In JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY (1952) #83, Larry Lieber joins Lee and Kirby to bring the mighty Thor from Norse myth to the Marvel Universe! In TALES OF SUSPENSE (1959) #39, Lee, Lieber and artist Don Heck introduce Tony Stark – and show how, to save his own life, he must build the invincible armor of Iron Man! In STRANGE TALES (1951) #110-111, Lee and Steve Ditko present the psychedelic world of Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts! And in DAREDEVIL (1964) #1, Bill Everett teams with Lee to show how blind youth Matt Murdock becomes the fearless adventurer known as Daredevil!
104 PGS./Rated All Ages …$7.99
--
Despite the many solicitations, I don’t think it will be a busy for Stephen (at least, on the confirmed appearances) because, well, Ults will be confused on Miles Morales, not the Illuminati. And the other one is just a reprint. Stephen will be certainly more featured in Warlock, which is nice to see again since they share a history. And that’s it!

Cholame, CA
James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American actor with a career that lasted five years. He is regarded as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were loner Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955) and surly ranch hand Jett Rink in Giant (1956).
Dean died in a car crash in 1955 and became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in East of Eden. He received a second nomination for his role in Giant the following year, making him the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the 18th best male movie star of Golden Age Hollywood in AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars list.
On September 30, as the group [James Dean,  Bill Hickman,  Sanford Roth and Rolf Wütherich] was driving westbound on U.S. Route 466 (currently SR 46) near Cholame, California, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a 1950 Ford Tudor, driven by 23-year-old California Polytechnic State University student Donald Turnupseed, was travelling east. Turnupseed made a left turn onto Highway 41 headed north, toward Fresno ahead of the oncoming Porsche. Dean, unable to stop in time, slammed into the passenger side of the Ford, resulting in Dean's car bouncing across the pavement onto the side of the highway. Dean's passenger, Wütherich, was thrown from the Porsche, while Dean was trapped in the car and sustained numerous fatal injuries, including a broken neck. Turnupseed exited his damaged vehicle with minor injuries.
An inquest placed fault for the accident entirely with Dean. There is a James Dean monument, financed by a Japanese businessman, in front of the former Cholame post office (which closed in 1994) and a restaurant (until its closure in 2022), one half-mile from the site of the accident.
