Storylines NATLA Cut
While the 8 episodes of season 1 managed to weave together most of the plot lines (or at least themes from the episodes) from the animated show into the live action, there were a few notable storylines that were cut. I wanted to go over those plots and speculate as to why they might have been cut and whether we might see them in future seasons woven in (like how a couple things from future seasons were woven into this season).
Imprisoned
One of Katara's first big leadership moments was in episode 6 of the animated series when the Gaang stumbles upon an earth nation village taken over by the Fire Nation. All their benders had been rounded up and sent to a prison so that they couldn't fight back - the Gaang obviously get involved, plot ensues, and Katara gets herself arrested so that she can find the prison and free Haru (the earthbender she inadvertently gotten arrested). With the help of Aang and Sokka providing the earthbenders with some coal to bend, she inspires them to fight back and they free the prisoners.
I think this storyline actually naturally fits much better in book 2: Earth. The focus of season 1 of the live-action was water bending and the avatar state - I think a storyline focused on earth bender resistance fits perfectly in season 2 where we get to see even more of how oppressive Fire Nation rule is and how they're 1) seeking to take out all the other benders and 2) doing their whole imperialist thing with stealing natural resources from the populace they're colonizing.
Katara has her moment to speak on her mother with Jet in episode 3 of the live-action and I think it's a natural change to keep the rebellious side-character count manageable for now. Jet fills the role to show Katara's desire for rebellion and standing up to the fire benders and while I think the Imprisoned storyline is really important, I think they've got plenty of room to do that in season 2. A big part of that story was Katara leading people to stand up when they hadn't been before and I think there's a nice homage to that in the final episode of the live-action when she gets all the women in the North to stand up to Pakku and demand to fight.
So I don't think they've fully nixed this storyline, I think they'll include it in the Gaang's trek through the Earth Kingdom on their way to Ba Sing Se. To me, the live action is doing a better job at building the characters rather than starting out with them fully formed. Katara has learned through the first season of the live action about all different leadership styles and has grown emotionally to a point where she's not only confident in standing up against injustice, but also leading others in that fight against oppressors. I think moving her leadership skills from episode 6 of season 1 to season 2 will let us really see her journey to that point rather than just having her start there.
2. The Pirates
In the animated show, Katara doesn't get the Waterbending Scroll until episode 9 of season 1, everything she does with waterbending up until that point was just stuff she figured out herself. In the animated show, the Gaang stops and Katara starts training Aang in waterbending, he shows off and washes all their supplies away so they have to go into town to buy more. This is where Aang randomly buys a bison whistle (why a shopkeeper in the Earth Kingdom would have a bison whistle is not explored) and the group also is invited onto a pirate ship to brows their wares. Katara notices a waterbending scroll and it's far too expensive for them to buy, so Katara steals it from them (as they made it clear they stole it from its rightful owner). A main theme of this episode is showing how naturally gifted Aang is and Katara getting frustrated because she's had to work so hard for her little bit of waterbending and Aang just surpasses her immediately. Zuko and Iroh show up looking for a pai sho piece and shenanigans ensue with the Gaang fighting off both pirates and Zuko, but of course, they manage to escape.
So the two main things in this episode were 1) getting the waterbending scroll so Katara could learn more formal forms and 2) dealing with how the dynamic of the group changes as Aang easily surpasses Katara in waterbending power.
I like that the live action tied the waterbending scroll directly to Katara's family and them hiding their culture to keep it alive until the time came when they could revive it once more. I think it's a much more impactful way for her to get the scroll than just some random pirates. It also allows her to actually train from the beginning rather than just being naturally good - in the live-action, Katara really has to work at her waterbending and get help. While she's a naturally fast learner and super powerful, she needs at least some form of guidance whether that be how to get in the right spiritual mindspace for bending or the physical movements for different forms provided by the scroll. Animated Katara has already been doing very advanced moves (bending water out of Aang's lungs, lifting a fish, throwing water and freezing it, etc) and it doesn't really feel like the animated show continues to show the new stuff Katara learns from the waterbending scroll - it's just the water whip and then the scroll is forgotten (almost like this is an episodic kid's show where each story is largely self-contained and plot points rarely arc into other episodes).
As it's the episode were Aang really starts learning waterbending and they've held off on having that part of his journey in the live action for now, it makes sense that they nixed it. It's a fun character building episode, but in the grand scheme, everything accomplished here can be accomplished elsewhere (and possibly in season 2). Katara feeling a bit miffed that Aang picked everything up quickly while she had to work really hard at it can easily be moved to season 2 when they address Aang learning the new bending styles. I also like how they moved him getting the bison whistle at a random shop in this episode to Bumi having made it for Aang back when they were both kids.
Of course, they do give easter eggs for this plot as well as the great divide one in episode 6 of the live-action, so it's possible the Gaang did have similar adventures, just off-screen.
3. The Fortune Teller
I'm perfectly fine with them nixing the plot of this storyline and moving the themes of 'take destiny into your own hands, don't look to others to tell you what to do without examining their methods of determining your own destiny' and scattering it through the entire season. The hard plot sets up Kataang as a couple which I didn't particularly like, nor did I feel like it followed the actual theme of the episode. Katara is obsessed with believing everything the fortune teller predicted and for part of the story, the lesson is 'that's bull, make your own destiny, just because she said it doesn't make it true' but then when it comes to her marrying a powerful bender, suddenly that lesson is thrown out and she realizes that Aang is a powerful bender so maybe they will end up together? It felt like a lot of mixed messages with the goal of setting up a 12 year old with a 14 year old and like I've said before, I'm not a fan of child romances. Once they turn 15, ok, but 12? No.
4. Aang's part in Bato of the Water Tribe
I think it was a great beat in the animated show to have Aang so afraid that Sokka and Katara might leave him for their "real" family - then have them confirm to him that they're with him all the way. The storyline does hammer home how alone in the world Aang feels and his fear that everyone will leave him either because they have 'family' of their own or his path is just too difficult. While the character beat was good to include, I think it's too big of a character beat to be relegated to only a portion of an episode in the live-action. I think if they want to explore Aang's fear of abandonment, they'll need to spend a good deal of time on it not only because it's a big part of him but also because to this day, some fans haven't forgiven Aang for hiding that map - if they want to do it justice, we're going to need more than a quick blurb to understand Aang's motivations and give the audience time to forgive him.
I'm glad they took Sokka's part of that episode and gave him the spotlight - and the spotlight could remain on celebrating Water Tribe culture rather than having Aang in the background making throwing up faces at everything. I think that the live action can still add in the ideas around Aang's insecurity over Katara and Sokka leaving him to go back to their people, and if they add it into season 2, I think it'll hit even harder after already seeing Bato in that season 1 flashback.
5. Sokka's Strategies
20 episodes in the animated show gave Sokka a lot of opportunity to come up with unique strategies to win in unexpected ways such as using explosives to 'open' the door to Roku's temple, the ventilation shafts to get the coal to the earth benders in Imprisoned, and him tricking the pirates into fighting Zuko and co. While at first, I thought not having so much of that in the live-action was taking away from Sokka's character, on a re-watch, I realized that they didn't remove it, they actually gave the origin for it. Sokka's character journey in season 1 of the live-action was about him accepting that he could be more than 'just' a big strong warrior to help his people, he was allowed to explore his ingenuity too. It's only after he meets Sai the Mechanist that he starts to come up with plans to get them out of situations or form battle strategies. I think it was a great, subtle, way to show Sokka coming into his own and beginning to come up with great plans alongside his warrior skills.
I know some fans of the OG show absolutely love every side quest - and more screen time in plots that aren't all that important give a lot of space for character 'down time bonding' that a tighter story structure just doesn't have room for. I think that most of the animated show's character beats and lessons in each of their episodes was really good (with a few exceptions - one of which in The Great Divide I think the live action actually took and made much BETTER) but when making an adaptation in a completely different format, stuff is just going to have to be left on the cutting room floor.
I LOVE everything the live action added in it's place (expanding Aang and Zuko's conversation during the Blue Spirit section of episode 6, all the Fire Nation royal family stuff, everything about Gyatzo, and Sokka and Katara's spirit visions) so I'll forgive leaving out some beats from the OG. I still think that several of these storylines will make their way into season 2 in one way or another, so I'm holding off on fully declaring them 'nixed' from the live action.

Alberta is often called the Texas of Canada. But have you instead thought of it as Texas being the Alberta of America?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been letting this sit in the ask box for well over a year for which I apologize, so I guess I put a little more effort into fleshing it out to make up for the wait. I started really overthinking it and I wanted to do a lot more reading than I was ultimately able to and decided, screw it, I'll just take a little chunk of the question.
Texas (Stella) belongs to my dear Texan friend @thisnameisquitequeer who has been a sympathetic ear over the years to my ranting and raving and who has been a part of numerous conversations about the frustrations of being in the state/province constantly being painted in a stereotypical loud/dumb/redneck fashion.
Initially I wanted to talk more about that (including my frustrations with people here appropriating symbols like the Confederate flag for dumb reasons) in this ask but I decided to just narrow the scope to say that Texan culture and reputation, obviously, precedes whatever passes for those things here by quite a lot. I have done a little reading on ranching history in Alberta, but I need to read more about the relationship via the growth of the oil industry to say more about that.
Some more explanations and notes below.
tldr but I don't think anyone thinks of Texas as anything but Texas
"not so much for pretty" is a quote from Charlie Russel, famous cowboy painter that Calvin is high key obsessed with, describing the difference between the two types of cowboys on either side of the Rockies.
fun fact: the cattle that eventually became Texas longhorns were dropped off in the areas by the Spanish in the 1500s- by the mid 1800s, these free ranging cattle were rounded up and driven northwards (with some obvious interruption during the American Civil War). Usually, they would be sent upriver to Missouri and reach Fort Benton, Montana before they were sold to Alberta ranchers.
Alberta ranch land was relatively "untouched" compared to the devastation in Montana and Utah, so a few ranchers including McIntyre mentioned above took the risk to drive their cattle across the border.
(by untouched y'know i mean having the people and the bison forced off it, but here we are.)
I got to visit John Ware's cabin this past June, which was a treat! The park obviously is not the cabin's original location, but you can still get some idea of what it might have been like back then.
"American cowboys, coming to work on Alberta ranches, shed their six-shooters at the border like leaves in the fall" is a quote from Pincher Creek area rancher F.W. Godsal
Some other famous Texans in Alberta included John Lamar, who was a legendary gunman and cowboy and got in a famous gunfight with John McKay in the streets of Lethbridge. Lamar shot McKay twice before McKay had a chance to aim, and then turned himself into the authorities (who ultimately decided he was in the right and let him go). There was also Johnny Franklin who was considered "the greatest bronc rider in the province", and Lige Abel, a black cowboy and famously strong, winning a bet that he couldn't walk a mile with an iron rail on his shoulder.
Anyway, to settle the question, ask random people where they think the biggest rodeo in the world probably is and see how many of them say Texas even though the answer is Alberta :) our reputation is still in its infancy, I guess.

Teenwoordigheid Almagtige Geregtigheid
Tumblr media

What Are The Most ideal Ways To Purchase Gold?
As the price of gold has taken off as of late, there are numerous people out there who are buying gold for the absolute first time. They might have restricted data on the gold market, and may not be guaranteed to know what direction to purchase click here to learn more gold is best for them. All they know is that gold prices are rising, and they need to get a slice of the pie.
So what are the most ideal ways to purchase gold? As a matter of some importance, purchasers need to have a comprehension of spot gold prices and how they work. Gold resembles whatever other ware that is traded on the open market. Prices can change all over each moment of the day. The spot price of gold lets us know the price of one official ounce of gold in US dollars.
Then, purchasers need to conclude which sort of gold is ideal for them. Individuals can buy gold in many structures, from government provided coins like the American Bird, American Bison, Canadian Maple leaf, South African Krugerrand, and Vienna Philharmonic, which all are guaranteed for their loads, content, and immaculateness. There are likewise gold bars, from Credit Suisse, PAMP, and Johnson Matthey which can require a critical investment, however offer the capacity to store a lot of abundance in an extremely minimal space. Then, at that point, there are more established numismatic gold coins from 1933 and prior. While these don't contain a full official ounce of gold, they really do have extra gatherers esteem which can be huge relying upon the grade and uncommonness of the coin being referred to.
Before you focus on purchasing gold bullion, you first need to figure out which of these products is best for you. That's what to do, you should inquire as to whether you wish to hold your actual gold for the long haul to save and protect the worth of your riches? Or on the other hand, might you want to acquire openness to the rising prices of gold as an investment apparatus?
Whichever the case is, having a clear cut objective capability can help you in figuring out which sort of gold is ideal for your specific circumstances. It pays to do a touch of examination prior to making a huge investment, since, supposing that you select a product that doesn't coordinate with your goals, then, at that point, you are not pursuing a very much educated choice. Finding a strong precious metals spot price outline that has an abundance of data on live gold prices, as well as verifiable information on the price of gold, which is actually the best beginning stage when you choose to purchase gold.

Nationalparks in Deutschland - 16 Blogger geben mir ihre Tipps!
Tumblr media
Kaum jemand erwartet solcherart Nationalparks in Deutschland.

Bob-Omb TV
(The kids are outside having a Bob-Omb Slot Car Derby. While Snake’s happy that they’re having fun, the noise is killing him. He’s currently hiding in a box, desperately trying to drown the noise out.)
Snake: Oh, man. If they get any louder, I’ll probably end up blowing up like a Bob-Omb! Ok, ok, ok, calm down, Snake. Maybe you can drown the sound out with a little TV. Nothing a little TV couldn’t solve…except for that one incident with the psychic kids’ brains being sneezed out for death tanks.
(Snake turns on the TV and turns the volume all the way up. He quickly closes the door, closes the windows, and puts headphones on so the sound won’t rupture his eardrums. First, he sees a bunch of Bob-Ombs on a conveyor belt in a factory.)
Toadette (vo): It is here that the Bob-Ombs reach their final stage of assembly.
(Channel Change! Next, Snake sees ten Rabbids screaming at ten Bob-Ombs in the dump they reside at. From the looks of it, the Bob-Ombs can’t take any more of their screaming.)
Bob-Omb: Aw, man, it’s so annoying! WE CAN’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!!!
(Cue the Bob-Ombs exploding, leaving the dump a crater and all ten of the Rabbids charred. One of them coughs. Enter Barbara, with an annoyed look on her face.)
Barbara (exasperated):I told you guys not to scream at the Bob-Ombs.
(Channel Change! Next, Snake sees Shulk dressed as an old professor while talking about an equation on a whiteboard. One of the shapes the equation represents is a Bob-Omb.)
Shulk: And said equation is illustrated perfectly here by this Bob-Omb.
(Channel Change! Snake sees two Bob-Ombs dressed in the police uniforms from Astral Chain.)
Pauline (vo, singing): Bob-Omb Police!
(Channel Change! Snake then sees a soap opera with the characters being portrayed by Lucas and Ashley, both of them blushing.)
Lucas: Well, the thing is, Ashe…I couldn’t really afford a present for you this year, so I got you this Bob-Omb.
(He holds up a Bob-Omb, while wincing in preparation for Ashley’s incoming wrath. Instead she kisses him on the cheek, much to Lucas’s surprise.)
Ashley: Oh, I just love him, Lucas! Besides, that’s what Red & I got you!
(She also holds up a Bob-Omb. Lucas and Ashley kiss.)
Ashley:Merry Christmas, Lucas.
(As Lucas and Ashley continue to kiss, the Bob-Ombs start blushing.)
Snake: ISN’T THERE ANYTHING ON THAT ISN’T ABOUT BOB-OMBS?!
(Channel Change! This time, Snake sees the Shadaloo Weapon Bay, where Bison, Balrog, Vega, FANG, and Juri are conversing about their next villainous plan.)
Juri: A few more attacks at the Mushroom Kingdom’s bases and Peach’ll break and reveal the location of the Power Moons. It’s only a matter of time.
Snake: (chuckles in hope) Heh-heh. Well, I guess this is okay. I mean, it’s not really real, and it’s not about Bob-Ombs so that’s a plus.
Bison: Shifting gears completely, how’s our newest weapon to put Mute City under our control going?
FANG: Oh, just splendidly, Bison! That foolish hedgehog Sonic sent it to us just this morning! And the best part? It’s completely and utterly fueled…by Bob-Ombs! AHAHAHAHAHA!!!
(The weapon of course being cannons that fire Bob-Ombs at incredibly high speeds. These cannons are all over Shadaloo’s new throneship.)
Bison: Perfect!! With these weapons, we can turn Mute City into a pile of ashes in seconds! But how about a little test-run first?
Balrog: But where are we gonna fire it?
Bison: Simple…Suzaku Castle! We’re going to give Ryu and his friends our regards as we conquer this pathetic little universe!
(With that, the Shadaloo throneship flies closeby Suzaku Castle. Ryu sees the throneship, and texts Sonic.)
Ken: Ryu, are you sure this’ll work?
Ryu: Knowing the fact that Sonic and I spent weeks planning this out, it will. Just trust me.
(The cannons lock on to the Castle as Ryu and his friends look onwards with both determination and worry. As the cannons prepare to fire at Suzaku Castle…)
Balrog: Wait…boss. The cannons ain’t firing!
Bison: What?! FANG, are they jammed already?!
(FANG just looks at a status screen nervously.)
Bison: FANG?!
FANG: Uh…no, sir. It looks like the cannons have…well…
Vega: Uh…Bison? It looks like the Bob-Omb cannons have been set to self-destruct. The explosions caused by the cannons, as well as the Bob-Ombs’ explosions, are most likely to take the entire ship with them.
Bison: Well, turn them off!
Juri: We tried that! The cannons just don’t want to turn themselves off for some reason.
Bison: But how is this-
(Balrog gets a text from Sonic. His face turns to intense fear.)
Bison: Balrog!
Balrog: Uhh, boss…
Bison: What is it?!
Balrog: I just got a text from Sonic.
Bison: Well, whatever it says can’t possibly be worse than this!
Balrog: Uhh…well…
Bison: Just show it! Sonic’s probably just gloating about this happening!
(Balrog shows the text…and everyone onboard, including Bison, is horrified.)
Sonic’s text: Omae wa mou shindeiru.
Bison: Oh, no.
(With that, the cannons, as well as the Bob-Ombs, explode, turning the ship into a massive scrapheap. Ryu and Ken are amazed at what just happened. Snake, however, is in stunned silence. After a few seconds, the heroes in the Smash Mansion and the Assist Trophy Apartments are seen carrying Sonic and Ryu up like a cheering crowd, chanting their names. After Snake processes all of this, he just throws his hands up, with the remote falling on the floor.)
Snake: I give up.

Slush-Savage, Rubble-Brain, Ember-Eater, Air-Head
………
Aang’s eyebrows pulled together in quick irritation. “What did you say?”
The night had grown dark among the trees behind the small knot of earth kingdom soldiers gathered around the campfire. It had rained earlier in the day, the ground around the camp still squishing wetly as evidence. The group circled rather closely around the fire, as much to dry off as to enjoy one another’s company as they laughed raucously. No one seemed to notice the Avatar’s sudden shift in mood as they continued to talk and joke.
This group of men represented a small military team assembled to travel from Ba Sing Se to the earth kingdom town of Lin’ah, a squat little village somewhere in the northern forests that, over the past few years, had received some harassment by an opportunist clan to the east. The clan had demanded a mandatory tribute from the townspeople, who had been left vulnerable since the removal of Fire Nation troops at the end of the war. The people of Lin’ah had been happy to be rid of the Fire Nation, but when the troops went, the town was left weakened and defenseless.
The town was small and remote enough that not until now, nearly ten years after the end of the war, was their plight finally brought to the Earth King’s notice and deemed worthy of attention. In fact, it likely still would not have been deemed worthy of royal intervention at all if it weren’t for a desperate twelve year old girl who had grabbed the hand of the Avatar’s fiancé in a market, begging for her help to plead with the Avatar for mercy to save her family and her town. Not long afterwards, King Kuei took a “particular interest” in Lin’ah, and the injustices happening there.
Aang had been traveling with this small company of soldiers for the last week, and had become familiar with each man, beginning to consider them as friends. Overall they were a simple lot, coming from humble backgrounds and spending their professional lives in the military. For some, the end of the war, although welcome news, had thrown an air of uncertainty on their future careers that professional soldiers had not known in one hundred years.
One of the men, Lang, a sergeant not more than a year or two older than Aang (if you don’t count Aang’s iceberg years) and who had been in the army since he turned fifteen, elbowed Aang with a laugh, “Lighten up! He didn’t mean anything by it. She’s real pretty, your Tribal girl,” and then turning to his companions with a conspiratorial wink, “Earth knows half the dirt-heads here wouldn’t mind getting wet with their own water squaw, eh boys!?” A loud round of guffaws burst from the group.
Its not like Aang hadn’t heard these derogatory terms used before. When he stopped to think about it, it was interesting so many slurs had remained the same in the last one hundred years; although, admittedly, with one hundred years of separation, war, and resentment, a fair amount of venom and variation had been added to the average person’s derogatory term repertoire.
Aang remembered from his childhood the many less-flattering terms he’d heard in his travels describing him and his fellow nomads: Bean Sprout, Bison Jockey, Blow Hard, and Gust-Queer to name a few.
Aang remembered with clarity his first trip away from the Southern Air Temple after receiving his arrows. As they entered an Earth Kingdom town he had walked a little taller next to Monk Gyatso, immensely proud of his hard-earned tattoos. Moments later, however, he deflated, his shoulders sagging and his ears reddening when a group of Earth Kingdom kids his own age had shouted, “Lookie there! A Grandpa Tats with his very own Tat pup!” followed by a chorus of barks while the boys held their fingers on their heads in mock of his arrow. He had known this kind of racism before, but somehow the shame of it had burned in his gut with added shame that day.
Strangely enough, now Aang was spared much of the racial discrimination his forefathers experienced simply due to the fact that very few remembered what prejudices to hold against the widely forgotten and almost entirely misunderstood Air Nomads... As the sole remaining representative of his people, and the Avatar no less, whatever presumptions people had became more of a personal issue rather than a racial concern.
His fiancé, however, was not exempt from the racism common among the three nations.
Aang remembered as a kid the way Katara’s face had ducked and colored in shame when workers on a dock would call out “Hey Beads!” or men lazing on a corner would whistle at the “Snow-fox Darky”. He remembered how Sokka’s jaw and fists had clenched in their travels when others would refer to him as a “Drip” or an “Icie”.  Although his own blue-arrowed fists had clenched in anger too, they all knew that such slights weren’t worth a confrontation. Most of the time they just tried to ignore them.
And not all prejudices came from the other nations; sometimes there were even divisions within the nationalities themselves. Although they had traveled to the North Pole countless times since the end of the war, Katara still felt at times an invisible distance between herself and some from her fellow water tribesmen in the North. It wasn’t just the sexism that, although improving, was still a fetter on the culture there. She found that many looked down their noses at her; that the term “Southerner”, although not a bad term by itself, when said with the right kinds of superiority, might as well have been a slap to the face.
But one beautiful thing about his fiancé was her righteous indignation, her ever readiness to set injustice to right. So it was not uncommon for Katara to fight back, for Sokka to candidly correct the slurs, for Aang himself to call out the racism when it was blatant.
But experience had taught them that blatant was much easier to combat than the small, daily discriminations that often popped up suddenly, fleeing away too quick for retaliation, but still leaving hurt in its wake. Sometimes it was clear that the perpetrator did not even realize they had done anything offensive. Many of these slights were done in ignorance.
But it rankled Aang whenever it happened. Katara enduring fake smiles to her face, that turned to acid remarks when her back was turned. The lurid looks from men who excused themselves for such disrespect due to their perceived superiority. Prices that were somehow higher for her than when he asked for the same product a moment later; storekeepers who clutched their wares closer when Sokka or Hakoda walked passed.
Katara had raged at first, but with no place to direct her anger, he watched as she began to simply file away the pains somewhere inside. Aang could do little more than boil internally, and when that cooled, long for a way to fix it all for the woman he loved.
Aang tried to remind himself that no one was free of biases. Aang recalled the number of times he had heard Sokka curse the “Ash-lickers” or “Pyre Brains”. He had even overheard Katara calling Toph a “Dirty Crag” once under her breath after the two had butt heads. And he knew that he himself had biases too. That it was hard, maybe even impossible, to fully escape the assumptions of one’s upbringing.
Har, a soldier sporting large side-burns in a vain attempt to age his baby-face leaned over, throwing his arm around Aang’s shoulder, “Seriously! Wouldn’t mind a water whip from her, eh!”
Aang bristled again, his angry huff making the campfire flare. “Watch your mouths, boys.”
Shunmu held his hands up in surrender from across the fire, “We mean no disrespect, Aang. On the contrary. Clearly Har is just jealous!”
Har laughed, “Yes. Yes I am!”
Taking a long calming breath, Aang forced a cocked smile, “Well Katara is taken. I’ll ask you to keep your grubby thoughts, and vile words, to yourselves.”
Since his defeat of Fire Lord Ozai so many years ago, Aang had found his new role as Avatar sometimes hard to navigate, and very often impersonal. He was treated with a high level of deference, which as well meaning as it was, was often very isolating. Aang had enjoyed his time with these soldiers, who after a few days traveling with him had opted to treat Aang as a person, as one of the group. Aang had enjoyed the easy comradery, welcoming being included in the gentle ribbing and joking that came so easily among them. For this reason Aang was loath to pick a fight with his new friends, not wanting to ruin the ease of their companionship.
But even as the joking continued, it was obvious that the Avatar was no longer at ease.
“Whoo, looks like we touched a nerve! Don’t go all glowy on us – we’re just having a bit of fun!”
“Yeah, we don’t mean nothing by it.”
“We know you like Tribal women – no need to get uptight. Just wishing we had our own exotic foreign water-fox, am I right boys!”
Aang’s head shot up. Who had said that?!
This was not the first time it had been insinuated that his choice in a wife could be boiled down to some sort of exotic fetish. That Katara’s value to him was just in her foreign beauty.
If only they knew. Katara: she was everything to him.
Lang spoke to the group at large, but clearly for Aang’s ears. “But she ain’t here right now. What’s say we find Aang a good solid earth kingdom beauty once we get to Lin’ah, eh Boys? Let him expand his pallet a little!”
Har joined in, “Yeah, one who can keep quiet to boot! Your water girl won’t ever know the wiser. It might do you well to try some other flavors, know what I mean?”
The fire flared again as Aang stood up abruptly, quieting the boisterous soldiers. He walked to the edge of where the light from the campfire touched before it dissipated into the dark forest beyond. Everyone froze as they watched his ridged back, hands balled into fists by his sides.
But when he turned to face his friends again, he had visibly calmed. There was even the trace of a smile beginning at the corners of his mouth.
“No thanks. I’m definitely not interested.” And a wicked glint shone in his eye as his grinned widened, “But I would like to introduce you to Katara sometime. Did you know that she’s an accomplished Water Bender? She taught me everything I know. Including this move…”
Aang swept his arms around his head in a large circle, calling water from the rain puddles surrounding the camp and bending it into a large flowing ring above the soldiers’ heads, every man’s eyes following the water’s circling motion above them.
Aang continued, “Wanna see what she would do if she heard some of the things you’ve said tonight?”
Without waiting for an answer Aang halted his arms’ circling and splaying his fingers for a moment, the water stopping its movement, waiting suspended in unnatural immobility. The men’s countenances grew uneasy in the stillness. Then, with a sudden strike downwards with his arms, the water formed into long spikes of ice, every one streaking downward and wedging into the ground between each soldier’s thighs. Aang’s precision was startling, no one was hurt, but every man there could feel the cold radiating off the ice, eyes wide knowing how close the spikes had struck.
Silence and shock filled the air as they stared down at the ice between their legs.
Aang spoke again, keeping his tone light and conversational, “My family is Water Tribe now, ya know. I’ve never met any people more kind and loyal and brave. I really do hope you get to meet Katara someday. But I’d advise you to watch your mouths when she’s around. Because one difference between me and my fiancé is…”
Aang pursed his lips trying hard to hold back a laugh, “She’s likely to aim a little higher.”

A/N: I got thinking about how in a world divided up into such distinct and separate nationalities, racism would surely be a part of society.
