First African American in the Great War
Brave men and women from my new book
Tumblr media
The young man on the drawing is Bob Scanlon. He was the very first African American, who joined the First World War where he showed extreme bravery. Here, he is drawn by a fellow-volunteer, the artist John Jocob Casey who like Scanlon 'for the duration of the war' joined The French Foreign Legion in Paris on 25 August 1914.
Bob Scanlon - whose real non-artistic name was Bob Lewis - was a talented boxer from Mobile in Alabama and came to Europe in 1907. Most of his boxing career was in France, where he amongst others sparred with the legenday Jack Johnson.
'Jack' Casey was an illustrator and artist from San Francisco. He had studied at the Mark Hopkins Department of Fine Arts of the University of California, the Art Students' League in New York, the Boston Museum and the New York School of Fine Arts. He had frequently exhibited his paintings with success at expositions in America and in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais.
Casey was wounded at the Battle of Champagne in 1915 and ended drawing maps for the French Army, and Scanlon  - who otherwise was considered to be born under a lucky star - was wounded at Verdun in 1916 when his famous left hand was hit by a shell case. But they both survived the war.
Bob Scanlon plays a key role in my book: Fighting for the French Foreign Legion.

Today is November 6, 2023.I just called John Fetterman's office again. Despite over 10,000 Palestinian people dead, his staff is still spouting the rhetoric that no, of course Senator Fetterman doesn't support the murder of civilians. He just thinks that a ceasefire will only benefit Hamas.
The aide on the phone didn't bother to answer my (admittedly rhetorical) questions about whether the murdered children were Hamas, whether the man carrying half his son's body was Hamas, whether Hamas was hiding in schools and hospitals, etc.
I am posting this now, but I am also scheduling this to be reblogged closer to the 2024 election.
See, I've already seen users minimize Biden's role in the genocide. I highly suspect that come 2024 election time, people will be swayed by politicians pretending they always wanted a ceasefire but that dastardly Israel wouldn't listen!
So as of now, with over 10,000 people dead, over twice that number injured, and no end in sight, PA reps John Fetterman, Bob Casey, Mary Gay Scanlon, and Josh Shapiro refuse to call for a ceasefire. Biden not only has refused to call for a ceasefire but sent a nuclear sub to Middle Eastern waters.
I encourage others to schedule similar posts to publish during 2024 election season, talking about their representatives' stances at this point. Because as this goes on, politicians will lie about how they reacted. Also, save any email replies, because give it a month and the email templates will change to imply the representatives have always supported a ceasefire.

Here's my poster of my official version of my version for my DisneyElseWorld's Pixar's...
INSIDE OUT 2!
Tumblr media
I saw the new Inside Out 2 trailer, and they made Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy bad by betraying the old emotions. Lots of crazy stuff is about to happen! We don't know what's going on, lots of details are there too. But what would the ElseWorld version be like?
SO!
For my idea. I have 6 new emotions, the OC emotions like, Courage, Surprise, Pride, Trust, Shame, and Frustration.
MAIN VILLAIN
I am using on of my oc villains, Spite, to be the main villain of the AU second movie.
OTHER CHARACTERS
Characters like Nia, the assistant of Ego, she runs the business with him but she tries to avoid him to help others. Bud, Courage's blood cell buddy, he doesn't speak but he's sweet, nervous, cute and got some attitude. And Brain, the big boss of Riley's mind, and the emotions need his help to stop Ego.
What New Places Would the Emotions Go To?
In this AU, far from HQ and Long Term Memory, instead of the back of the mind being empty, there is a huge mind-filled city called Mindtopia, aka, The City of Riley, where everything in the mind has everybody for Riley's Inner Workings in her mind. That also includes Headquarters. And guess what, they're not the only company, there's also banks, council buildings, restaurants, malls, houses, apartments, and everything for Mind Workers after they work at Long Term Memory. And The Mind Councilman, Chairman, is the Mind Prime Minister.
Returning Cast like...
Amy Poehler as Joy, Bill Hader as Fear (YES! I'm bringing Bill Hader back! He's so much funnier then I expected), Lewis Black as Anger, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Kensington Tallman as Riley, Diane Lane as Mrs. Andersen, and Kyle MacLachlan as Mr. Andersen.
Recast Alert!
I actually like Liza Lapira playing Disgust. After what Mindy Kaling did in Velma, it wasn't enough for me. Because the show and her are piles of shit to me.
With All-Star Cast like...
Jake Johnson (the Spider-Verse films) as the new outside leader emotion known as Courage, Sam Richardson (Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken) as Surprise, Kate McKinnon (Ferdinand & Saturday Night Live) as Frustration,
Andrew Rannells (Trolls 3) as Trust, Randall Park (Paw Patrol: The Movie) as Pride, Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family and The Secret Life of Pets films) as Melancholy, Paula Pell (Saturday Night Live and The Cat In The Hat) as Aunt Feely & Mrs. Andersen's Anger, Henry Winkler (Barry, Monsters At Work) as the mind algorithm/brainiac boss of the mind known as Brain, Nathan Fillion (Monsters University & Cars 3) as the villainous and hilarious, but very evily whiny, yet hateful, Spite,
Zooey Deschanel (Surf's Up and Trolls) as Ego's sarcastic female assistant, Nia, Lucas Neff (Raising Home and Monsters At Work) as Yes Man, Will Forte (the Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs films) as Mind Gate Guard Jimmy, Peter Sohn (Ratatouille, Lightyear, and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse) as the emotions new best blood cell companion buddy named Bud, Stephen Root (Barry, and King of the Hill) as Mind
Natasha Rothwell (the Sonic films) as Riley's middle school P.E. coach, Mrs. Hutch, Thomas Barbusca (Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life) as Jordan, Haley Tju (Amphibia) as Kelli, Beanie Feldstein (Neighbors 2) as Riley's bully, Frances, and Josh Peck (Drake & Josh and Drillbit Taylor) as Frances' friend, Nate.

the books I read in 2023
Welp, time to finally face this post and submit it. I'm kind of embarrassed because I am so bad at reading anymore. No explanation, no excuses. I used to read twice this many books as a matter of course, and now I ... like, don't. My TBR barely budged ... I cleared some stuff out thanks to summer camp, but then I got new stuff to fill it back up.
I don't know. Maybe one day I'll start reading again. Not today, though, probably. This year's list has two books on it so far, both of which I'm maybe a quarter into. Ugh.
Wired Style, Constance Hale & Jessie Scanlon
Once Upon Atari, Howard Scott Warshaw
Dragonwatch: Master of the Phantom Isle, Brandon Mull
The Illustrated Al, ed. Josh Bernstein
Fucking Apostrophes, Simon Griffin
Jazz in the Bittersweet Blues of Life, Wynton Marsalis and Carl Vigeland
The Kitchen Detective, Christopher Kimball
Decoding Boys, Cara Natterson
The Maxx (1-35, complete), Sam Kieth (1)
Bury My Heart at Chuck E. Cheese’s, Tiffany Midge
Barely Functional Adult, Meichi Ng
What If? 2, Randall Munroe
8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, W. Bruce Cameron (2)
Over Sea, Under Stone, Susan Cooper
This Mournable Body, Tsitsi Dangarembga
The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt
The Rapture of the Nerds, Cory Doctorow and Charles Stross
The New Hacker’s Dictionary, ed. Eric S. Raymond (3)
All You Need is Kill, Hiroshi Sakurazaka
Wind/Pinball, Haruki Murakami
Disappearing Earth, Julia Phillips
Where Nobody Knows Your Name, John Feinstein
We Should Hang Out Sometime, Josh Sundquist
Watchmen, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
The Philosophy of Modern Song, Bob Dylan
Guardians of the Galaxy: The Complete Collection, Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, et al.
The Dark is Rising, Susan Cooper (4)
Banana Ball, Jesse Cole
A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album, Ashley Kahn
Free Lunch, Rex Ogle (5)
Greenwitch, Susan Cooper (6)
The Shepherd, the Angel, and Walter the Christmas Miracle Dog, Dave Barry
italics: read it before bold: read it to my kid in bed struck: unfinished
I’d read the first ten or so issues of this before, out of interest because I watched the animated series on MTV. This is the first time all the way through and I didn’t realize it was so dark and triggering.
I read this one when mine was a toddler, and remembered it being pretty patriarchal and victorian. Thought maybe it would hit different now that she’s actually teenaged, and ... like, it did! it’s even worse! Absolutely zero of this shit fits a kid who is not 100% straight and searching. I got through four essays and took it back to the library.
I got up through the Bs and then I LOST MY COPY.
The more I read of this, the more I realized I maybe only read the first couple chapters. Still keeping the italics (making up for claiming I never previously read The Maxx).
I subbed a middle school reading class where this was the text. Ended up reading the whole thing across the day.
This could be the last new book I ever read to my own children. We generally don't read to sleep during holiday breaks, instead allowing them to fall asleep in front of a TV. But when school restarted, my youngest (officially a teenager) didn't want me to read to him at bedtime anymore. The end of an era. I may have cried a little bit. I expect the Dave Barry on Christmas Eve tradition to continue at least another year (my oldest likes it and specifically requested it again), but maybe no more new ones.

Ridership Sags, Costs Soar, but Shapiro Still Wants More Money for SEPTA
Despite exploding costs and plunging ridership, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) appears in line for another infusion of nearly $300 million in taxpayer cash.
Earlier this week, Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro vowed to increase public transportation funding by $282.8 million.
“Ever since I was a state representative and county commissioner in Montgomery County, I have supported SEPTA and the critical services it offers to hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians every day,” the governor said. “SEPTA has presented plans to address safety and cleanliness throughout their system, and county officials have entertained a willingness to step up to the plate and increase their support. As a result, my administration is prepared to make a major investment in SEPTA.”
It’s yet to be determined how much local funding, if any, Delaware Valley governments will kick in.
SEPTA CEO and General Manager Leslie S. Richards praised Shapiro’s decision. She said it would help SEPTA “address our more pressing needs and…continue [to serve] our communities.” Richards previously said SEPTA might cut services by 20 percent and raise fares by 30 percent. That would raise a Quick Trip Ticket from $2.50 to $3.25 and SEPTA Key and contactless payments from $2 to $2.60.
SEPTA funding and budget issues became a major focus for Democratic politicians after the transit agency revealed that it faced a looming fiscal cliff. It burned through $1.8 billion in federal COVID money between Fiscal Years 2020 and 2023 while generating just $1.18 billion in revenue.
That’s not counting the $2 billion in annual funding from Pennsylvania taxpayers, something independent auditors said was “the largest single source of subsidy revenue.”
An additional $295 million in taxpayer funding was not included in last year’s state budget.
And still ridership numbers continue to fall short of pre-COVID levels. In October 2023, average ridership was just 67 percent of the October 2019 number. On Regional Rail, ridership was just 56 percent of the pre-COVID average.
SEPTA’s cash crunch caused Democratic U.S. Reps. Madelaine Dean, Chrissy Houlahan, and Mary Gay Scanlon to send a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg last month asking for a bailout from federal taxpayers. Democratic Sens. Bob Casey Jr. and John Fetterman signed the letter, as did Rep. Dwight Evans (D-Philadelphia). “Without strong, sustained federal support, Pennsylvanians risk losing transit access entirely,” the lawmakers wrote. “As the Department of Transportation continues its critical work, we urge you to prioritize SEPTA and Pennsylvania’s transit systems.”
Now, there’s a chance that SEPTA may get a partial state bailout, if not a federal one.
That’s music to the ears of Democrats representing Delaware Valley in Harrisburg.
“From the ‘burbs to the city, SEPTA connects us to jobs, doctors’ appointments, recreation, shopping, and so much more,” state Sen. Maria Collett (D-Montgomery) posted on social media after learning of the federal lawmakers’ letter. She expressed gratitude for their “fighting for more federal dollars to keep this critical system afloat.”
State Rep. Morgan Cephas (D-Philadelphia) hoped Shapiro would go further. She said SEPTA needed even more cash to make sure more seniors and workers take mass transportation. “SEPTA alone moves over half a million people every day to their jobs, families, school, medical appointments, and more…”
The reasons for the declining ridership vary. Numerous complaints from riders to the Better Business Bureau focus on late buses or trains. Others complained that drivers focused more on beating red lights instead of serving customers.
Crime remains a big problem for SEPTA as well. Statistics show the number of disorderly conduct and public urination and defecation cases since 2019 have increased far higher than ridership, from 213 to more than 1,300 in 2022.
Robberies jumped from 118 in 2019 to 217 in 2021, while aggravated assaults almost doubled from 46 to 86 in the same period.
That meant significant increases in SEPTA expenses. Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) statistics show SEPTA spent $1.44 per passenger miles traveled on commuter rail in 2022 compared to 49 cents per passenger mile in 2013. For bus passengers, it was $2.66 in 2022 versus $1.09 in 2013. Streetcar rail was $2.87 in 2022 and only .94 cents in 2013.
Pennsylvania Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R-41) said SEPTA gets enough money.
“Supporting SEPTA’s request for increased state subsidy is a challenging argument to make, especially in light of Philadelphia District Attorney (Larry) Krasner’s inability to maintain law and order throughout America’s sixth largest city,” he said. “No amount of increased subsidy can restore customer confidence in making use of the network given the raging crime crisis Krasner perpetuates.”
The Commonwealth Foundation said the state government needs to take a new look at how it funds mass transit.
“Several years ago, state mass transit funding was moved offline into a special fund, taking a portion of sales tax revenue and Turnpike tolls to fund transit systems,” said Nathan Benefield, the Commonwealth Foundation’s senior vice president. “Unlike the General Fund, lawmakers don’t vote on this spending every single year.
“Should lawmakers examine how much state funding goes into those programs? We think they should.”
On Feb. 6, Josh Shapiro will hold his annual budget address.

Kristen Bell Headlines A Forgettable Bargain Bin Wedding Comedy
Kristen Bell Headlines A Forgettable Bargain Bin Wedding Comedy
Based on the novel of the same name by Grant Ginder, director Clare Scanlon (“Set It Up”) returns to the world of romantic comedies with the charmless, vaguely holiday-set “The People We Hate at the Wedding”. Adapted by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“Bob’s Burgers, “Deadpool 3”), there is little here to recommend in a film that once upon a time would have been destined for the…

African American Fighting for France 1914
Brave men and women from my new book
Tumblr media
The 28-year-old Boxing Champion Bob Scanlon was amongst the first forty-four Americans who joined the Great War as a volunteer in the French Foreign Legion in Paris in August 1914. He came from Mobile in Alabama but came to France already in 1907 where he had most of his boxing career. He was Light Heavyweight Champion and sparred amongst others with the famous Jack Johnson. He was friend and “compis de combat” with Eugene Bullard and David Kind who are two of the protagonists in my new book. The picture is a postcard of Scanlon which he signed in Paris in 1931 for his friend Glover Compton, a famous jazz musician. You will meet all four men and read their fascinating stories in my new book: Fighting for The French Foreign Legion – Americans who joined the first world war in 1914.

It's crazy to me how the average person calling for a ceasefire has done infinitely more to stop a genocide than politicians.
I've called my reps every day for over 4 months. I've mailed them pictures of dead children. I've donated. I've reblogged posts and saved images to make sure that even if pics get taken off social media. I've boycotted. I haven't attended a protest because there aren't ones accessible to me.
And I'm not listing those things to try to get credit or anything because I see it as my duty and because I know others have done much more. Why I am listing those things is because in comparison, I have two reps who continue to support Israel. The other supported them for 11,300 Palestinian deaths, then called for a ceasefire. Once. By signing a lettee and literally doing nothing else to bring about a ceasefire since then.
With great power comes little responsibility.

Tbh I actually like Colt Bronco for the fact that Dan Scanlon has a tendency to put adorably cringey stepdads in his Disney*Pixar films *cough* Don Carlton *cough* and also the fact that Colt Bronco has the perfect mix of having the adorably cringey stepdad side of Don Carlton and the heartfelt "I just want to be a good dad" side of Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible!!! 😉😉😉

Quote
Scanlon was a thin one with sharp, narrowed eyes, too much padding in the shoulders, too much snap to the brim of his hat, too much point to the toe of his shoes. The 38 I had taken away from him and handed back made a considerable bulge in the front of his coat.
And you thought men paid no attention to clothes. Scanlon is a gangster’s thug sent to pick up Johnny Dollar, insurance investigator, “the man with the action-packed expense account,” and Scanlon learns to his dismay that Dollar is not a man to be pushed around. The loyal listener of this radio mystery program would have known a gangster’s thug was no match for Dollar, former cop, former marine, and our hero. Dollar disarms Scalon, tells him to stop pushing people around, and they go off to see the head gangster.
This was a time when even gangsters wore formal clothing in public: suits, ties, and hats. But they wore flashier styles than your average man. Dollar’s thoughts make clear that  Scanlon resembles his clothing: trying to hard, and in bad taste. Yes, clothes make the man or rather clothes mark the man.
This is from  “The Tears of the Night, Episode 2,” played by Bob Bailey from 1955 to 1956. Archive.org has put these on line along with a lot of other radio programs collected by the Old Time Radio Researchers Group.
