The Never King door Nikki St. Crowe
‘If you are not the most interesting person you know, then you’re doing it wrong.’

Why we should listen to children’s questions: A review of Jana Mohr Lane’s "The Philosophical Child"
“What is eternal other than ifs and maybes to every wee what is fatal other than the shush to the question why.”
— Poetry written during the review process
In The Philosophical Child, Jana Mohr Lane gently nudges us to reconsider the way we engage with children’s questions. Described by online retailers as a guide for parents to engage their children in philosophical conversations, the book moves beyond simplistic ideas of right or wrong answers, focusing instead on the power of curiosity and inquiry. While this guide provides practical advice for engaging children in philosophical dialogues, it is also a call for us—whether parents, educators, or adults—to rediscover the value of curiosity and vulnerability in our own thinking.
Poetic Beginnings and Philosophical Conversations
One of the book’s most captivating elements is its use of poetry. Each chapter begins with a snippet of a poem that sets the tone for the conversations and philosophical exploration that follow. The poetic expressions serve as more than just an aesthetic choice; they guide us into the heart of the chapter’s themes. I found this to be both enchanting and purposeful. For instance, the poem at the beginning of Chapter 4, though seemingly simple, acts as a compelling prelude to the chapter’s deep dive into philosophical sensitivity—a sensitivity that Jana believes is not just for the gifted, but for all children.
Yet, the structure of the book itself can sometimes feel disjointed. The chapters, although related thematically, can jump between topics that seem loosely connected at first. In Chapter 2, for example, the section “Philosophy in the Age of Twitter” initially feels out of place, yet it speaks volumes when we understand the context of developing philosophical sensitivity in a world driven by fast-paced, often shallow communication. This was one of the aspects that both challenged and excited me: the narrative flow of the book reflects how philosophy itself is not linear but an ongoing conversation, sometimes meandering, sometimes jarring, but always meaningful.
Philosophy as a Conversation, Not an Answer
Jana Mohr Lane doesn’t just teach us how to engage children in philosophical thinking; she reminds us that philosophy is more about the questions than the answers. Her book emphasizes that fostering an environment where children feel safe and encouraged to ask questions is essential to their growth. However, there is more to it. Philosophy, she suggests, is not just about abstract thinking—it's about how those questions shape our view of the world.
When I reflect on my own experience with education, especially with philosophy, I am reminded of my undergraduate days. I studied philosophy in various forms, but it wasn’t until much later that I realized what those experiences lacked. Philosophy should never be confined to the rigid classroom, nor should it be measured by grades alone. Philosophy is about seeking meaning—without the pressure of being right. In Jana’s book, this idea shines through her work with children, who are naturally curious but often stifled by systems that favor certainty over inquiry.
The Impact of Philosophy on Children’s Development
One of the most profound aspects of the book is the idea that philosophy nurtures critical thinking, self-awareness, and emotional growth in children. By encouraging them to think about existence, identity, and justice, we equip them with the tools to process and navigate complex feelings and situations. This is not just academic—it is developmental. Children who engage in philosophical thinking learn not just how to ask “what if” but also how to handle the uncertainty that comes with big questions.
Jana’s conversations with children, including her own son, exemplify how philosophical sensitivity can guide children through their emotional and intellectual growth. Yet, it’s important to recognize that this book is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The advice is gentle and adaptable—inviting parents and educators to mold it to their own context. And in the spirit of true philosophy, Jana’s approach does not demand perfection or certainty—it simply invites thoughtful pause and reflection.
A Bridge Between Cultures: Philosophy beyond the West
In the context of my own upbringing in the East, Jana’s book raises another important consideration—cultural differences in philosophical thinking. It’s widely known that children in Western societies are often encouraged to express their thoughts and engage with big questions from a young age. In contrast, children in Eastern cultures—especially those in more traditional environments—may face constraints on their curiosity. It is no surprise, then, that in these different cultural contexts, the “training” for philosophical thinking can look very different.
While the children in Jana’s book seem to have been nurtured in environments where questioning and dialogue are celebrated, I wonder how this book would resonate with children from more restricted environments, where the fear of being wrong looms large. Could a similar kind of philosophical dialogue occur in societies where questioning authority is less welcome? Or, perhaps more crucially, how can we bridge this gap? The book invites a larger conversation about how to cultivate a space for philosophical inquiry that transcends cultural boundaries—a space where every child can feel that their questions matter.
The Final Thought: More than a guide
To be clear, The Philosophical Child is not a “how-to” guide in the traditional sense. It’s not about getting the right answers, nor about following a set of instructions. It’s about cultivating a mindset—both for adults and children—that values deep thinking, vulnerability, and continuous questioning. It’s about creating spaces, in classrooms and homes, where questions are not only allowed but encouraged.
As I finish this review, I am reminded of a lesson I learned from a philosophy professor during my undergraduate years. After struggling with my grades, I asked her why I wasn’t given a higher mark despite my efforts. She told me, “It’s not the grade that defines you, Elly. It’s you.” This thought resonates with Jana’s message: philosophy is not about getting it “right” every time, but about engaging with the questions, the uncertainties, and the process of seeking deeper meaning.
Final Thoughts If you are a parent, educator, or simply someone who believes in the transformative power of questioning, The Philosophical Child offers a thoughtful exploration of how we can encourage philosophical thinking in children. It is not merely a guide but a narrative that calls on us to pause, listen, and think alongside children as they navigate the world of questions. In doing so, we may find ourselves not just teaching children how to ask the right questions but learning from their unfiltered curiosity as well.
Epilogue
I have often thought about the nature of learning and how it is shaped by external forces—whether it be grades, authority, or expectations. The Philosophical Child has made me reflect on how important it is for us as educators to create an environment where children feel free to explore, question, and wonder. It’s not always about having the answers but about encouraging the search for them.
