Erin Reed at Erin In The Morning:
The Florida Health Department released guidance “strongly advising against the use of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines” and urging doctors to avoid administering them. The state justified this recommendation by citing a lack of “booster specific…randomized controlled trials.” This stance sharply contrasts with the guidance from federal agencies and health officials. Notably, the state's rationale mirrors the approach it has taken in its anti-transgender attacks on gender-affirming healthcare—a tactic commonly employed by Florida agencies and many anti-transgender activists. “The most recent booster approval was granted in the absence of booster-specific clinical trial data performed in humans…Although randomized clinical trials are normally used to approve therapeutics, the federal government has not required COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers to demonstrate their boosters prevent hospitalizations or death from COVID-19 illness,” reads the press release from the Florida Health Department.
This is not the first time Florida has used the absence of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to justify bans on best-practice medical care—a tactic familiar to the state’s transgender community. During debates by the DeSantis-appointed Florida Board of Medicine over whether to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth and many adults—a decision they ultimately made in favor of—the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration issued guidance against transgender healthcare, stating, “There are no randomized control trials on the effectiveness of ‘gender affirming’ treatment.” Randomized controlled trials are often difficult to perform, take time, and may not be practical. Over 90% of all medical care does not have “high-quality” GRADE scores, which often require randomized controlled trials to receive. This does not mean that the treatments are deficient or harmful, rather, they are driven by other forms of evidence, such as observational studies, which are easier to perform, and individualized patient responses to treatment.
[...] The CDC currently recommends everyone older than 6 months get the updated COVID vaccine.
The Florida Department of Health under Surgeon General “Dr.” Joseph Ladapo continues to pander to anti-vaxxer extremists by issuing guidance against mRNA-based COVID vaccines.

The new vaccine came too late for me - I cought COVID at DragonCon a few weeks before it came out. Having experienced the newest COVID strain, let me advise you: GET THE NEW SHOT AS SOON AS YOU CAN.
The new COVID strain is not fun, and it's very contagious. Okay, being at a giant convention definitely made it more likely that I would get it. I did mask a lot but not 100%. One of my roommates didn't mask at all. All four of us in my room got sick. Different ages, different health conditions. My point is, YOU DO NOT WANT IT. You do not want to give it to others. It is not fun. I've been sick more than a week now. I'm feeling better, but it will probably be another 3-5 days before I'm fully recovered.
GET THE SHOT. If not for you, then for your parents, grandparents, jewelry friends, immuno-compromised friends and strangers, etc. I wish I could have gotten boosted before the convention.
CDC finally fuckin' recommended the new COVID boosters for everyone in the US. letting my american followers who don't check the news know because i've been turned away for wanting to get an extra booster & now won't be anymore & it's Lovely. most americans are not going to get these and are going to grumble about them, which sucks as far as spread goes - but DOES mean u can schedule with ur local pharmacy sooner rather than later. please do so. ur immunocompromised friends and ur own body will thank u.

Addressing Challenges and Needs for COVID-19 Boosters and vaccines in the U.S.
United States (October 18, 2022) – The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for new booster shots designed to fight the latest and most dominant omicron variants of COVID-19, specifically BA.4 and BA.5. The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) immediately endorsed the new booster. Although prevalent and more contagious, the newest variants are proving less lethal than past strains of the coronavirus.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine and collaborators provided the latest guidance to healthcare professionals in a commentary reported by The American Journal of Medicine emphasizing the necessity of widespread vaccination with the updated boosters, denoting benefits include prevention of more lethal variants.
Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., Dr.PH, Senior author, first Sir Richard Doll Professor of Medicine and senior academic advisor, FAU Schmidt College of Medicine stated, "The dedicated healthcare professionals in communities and hospitals across the nation continue to try to address existing and new challenges of COVID-19. We must redouble our efforts to promote evidence-based clinical and public health practices, which should include vaccination of all U.S. adults and eligible children based on the most recent FDA and CDC guidance."
While vaccines have had the most significant impact on the overall improvement of human health throughout the 20th century, the percentage of children vaccinated against serious and prevailing childhood diseases has declined. "In the U.S., diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus or DPT immunizations have decreased from 85% in 2019 to 67% in 2021," said co-author Sarah K. Wood, M.D., professor of pediatrics and interim chair, Department of Women's and Children's Health and vice dean for medical education, FAU Schmidt College of Medicine.
The authors advised healthcare providers to recommend a COVID-19 booster vaccine to all eligible patients with the goal of protecting individuals as well as communities. "The most simple and straightforward newest guidance we can now offer to healthcare providers is that all individuals ages 5 and older should receive a booster shot," said Alexandra Rubenstein, first author, clinical research coordinator, Department of Neurology, Boston Medical Center, and an aspiring physician. "Specifically, based on the recent EUAs issued by the FDA and CDC, those 5 and older may receive Pfizer bivalent boosters, and those ages 6 and older may receive bivalent boosters from Moderna.”
COVID-19 positive patients are likelier to infect up to 6 people, compared to 1-2 infections possible from influenza positive patients. Although Covid-19’s mortality rate is up to 30% higher than influenza, the new boosters decrease the risk of dying and hospitalization by more than 90%. “While the absolute risks of severe COVID-19 are low in youths, the benefit-to-risk ratio was deemed to be favorable in a 13-to-1 vote of independent external advisers to the FDA," Rubenstein stated.
The authors acknowledged that virtually all Americans would seek any available safe and effective therapies for any and all communicable diseases whenever possible. Many Americans routinely accept major surgery, toxic chemotherapy and or radiation therapy for cancer, which can result in a far greater number of side effects than are caused by vaccinations. Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., Dr.PH, noted that, “Of the 10 richest countries in the world, the U.S. ranks last in vaccination rates and first in both numbers and rates of COVID-19 deaths.”

#WHO recommends monovalent #COVID19 #boosterjabs specially for those who are vulnerable or weak. It confirms that the new #XBB15 booster shots for COVID-19 do indeed help neutralize current variants, regardless of the brand maker of the vaccine, and does not recommend new formulation yet at this time.
• Monovalent XBB.1.5 COVID-19 vaccines across different platforms elicit broadly cross-reactive neutralizing antibody responses against circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants.
• Given the current SARS-CoV-2 evolution and the breadth in immune responses demonstrated by monovalent XBB.1.5 vaccines against circulating variants, the TAG-CO-VAC advises retaining the current COVID-19 vaccine antigen composition, i.e. a monovalent XBB.1.5

The link is sourced in the tags, but in case you’re viewing this post on a blog that doesn’t telegraph them in browser mode (like mine), here is the link to the article from the Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis.
The study, available online in Nature, shows that people who were repeatedly vaccinated for COVID-19 — initially receiving shots aimed at the original variant, followed by boosters and updated vaccines targeting variants — generated antibodies capable of neutralizing a wide range of SARS-CoV-2 variants and even some distantly related coronaviruses. The findings suggest that periodic re-vaccination for COVID-19, far from hindering the body’s ability to recognize and respond to new variants, may instead cause people to gradually build up a stock of broadly neutralizing antibodies that protect them from emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and some other coronavirus species as well, even ones that have not yet emerged to infect humans.
Now immune to all disease, folks I'm amazing

NOT DONE YET, #Covid #pandemic #CrowdedPlaces
No Vacation for COVID, by Rich Paschall Many, or should I say most of us, have come to believe that the Coronavirus pandemic is over. You can see it just about everywhere. Few people wear masks in public, even in crowded stores. A couple months ago I was at the packed United Center in Chicago for the Lionel Ritchie concert. I don’t recall seeing anyone wearing a mask. Prior to being let into the…

COVID-19 vaccines may reduce risk of heart attack, stroke: Study
Urja Sinha at NewsNation:
(NewsNation) — The COVID-19 vaccine and its booster shots may help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, a new study reports. The study shows the rate of certain cardiac incidents like heart attack and stroke was up to 10% lower in the 13 to 24 weeks after the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Following a second dose, the incidence was up to 27% lower after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine and up to 20% lower after the Pfizer/Biotech vaccine. The study, published in Nature Communications, was conducted by a team of researchers from the Universities of Cambridge, Bristol and Edinburgh studied health data from nearly 46 million adults in England between December 8, 2020, to January 23, 2022.

Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines for general population allowed
More patients around the country can avail of the bivalent vaccines for COVID-19 as a result of the Department of Health’s (DOH) revision of its guidelines, according to a Manila Times news report. This developed as less than 50% of the initial batch of bivalent vaccines have been used on patients limited to health care workers and senior citizens. To put things in perspective, posted below is…

How does one evaluate the need for booster shots for certain vaccines?
Vaccines have been a cornerstone in preventing infectious diseases and improving public health. While vaccines provide immunity against specific diseases, the need for booster shots arises in certain cases to enhance and sustain protection over time. Booster shots are additional doses of a vaccine given after the primary vaccination series to reinforce the immune response and provide long-term…
