RAFAEL CASAL - NEW INSTAGRAM REEL (2024)
BAY AREA! Budget approval for the tax incentive is going up for vote today, and some city officials are fighting the idea of creating local jobs. We need people to CALL IN before 1pm or COME THROUGH today at 1 to the city council meeting! Details are in my stories - take 5 minutes and let the city council of Oakland know that we want more jobs here for locals! Film productions can spend MILLIONS in a city when they shoot here, and so many of our filmmakers are going elsewhere. That’s hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars not going to local businesses. Let’s keep it local! Make a 5 minute call for us today (before 1pm) or even better, come down and say it in person. Love yall.

Boots riley has an intresting perspective on waivers (to an extent he does make an excellent point) I dont know the ins and outs on what the interim waiver /agreement looks like tho.

More in his thread.
Idk really know what to say so I asked my husband about this generally (he has no entertainment industry knowledge or info), and here’s what he said:
I think it’s complicated because the industry has so many interconnected parts. What you’re seeing is smaller companies agree to what the union is asking for and so are allowed to produce movies, but some of those movies wind up on platforms owned by the bad guys who don’t wanna give the union what they’re looking for. So they get some content because there are people in the stream of commerce that are meeting the unions demands. It’s a part of why the brass ring for labor unions is something called sectoral bargaining, where you negotiate on behalf of an entire sector or industry. You see it in other countries sometimes. At the end of the day it would be a little bit like if GM didn’t agree to what you wanted and Ford did, and car dealers who are owned by Ford sold both types of cars. There’s not really much you can do to avoid it without punishing good actors who are doing right by the workers.
My takeaway is that if more workers were organized and if they were better organized, they could get even more power.

[Image: Boots Riley (@ BootsRiley) quote retweeted Rachel Premack (@ rrpre).
Rachel Premack's original tweet says: "This is big — UPS' 3,300 pilots say they will not fly if the company's Teamsters package drivers strike."
Boots Riley's quote retweet says: "Biggest strike wave since the 70s. An unprecedented level of solidarity is happening. We have the power to re-shape the world if we want." End ID.]

i know this isn't the most important thing about maha dakhil's situation with caa, but i always found lovely how much maha supported simone even if she wasn't her agent. maybe as one of the few powerful non-white women behind the scene in hollywood, she felt a kinship to simone.
what has happened recently shows how fragile non-white people's positions in the industry actually are anyway, especially women.
how media has been covering the firing of melissa also feels to me like them trying to scare people off to silence. a variety article mentioned that marc platt tried to get the black (and jewish) director boots riley fired from wme for being antizionist and saying that idf movie that gal gadot was sponsoring should be boycotted. he didn't get him fired and boots said that he also thought it was just used to scare people https://twitter.com/BootsRiley/status/1727189361656266850?t=kEx6toyf3-QVF05MExzduA&s=19
Maha supporting Simone 🥺
Hollywood needs to burn to the ground, you know it’s bad when trash like Tom Cruise steps out to say what’s going on is beyond all reason
Seeing the actress from scream being labelled as antisemitic by a production company when she was very inclusive of Jewish voices in all her posts is not surprising, Hollywood is a tool to spread Israeli propaganda 🤡

It's spreading.
The longer the strikes go on- the more of the working class gets emboldened to fight.

I just did a long interview with a chinese journalist about protest songs and Atari Teenage Riot. It’s amazing that our song “Black Flags” still inspires protestors around the world who are fighting for freedom. 8 years ago the world seemed a completely different place. Just the fact that during the Occupy protests libertarians, anarchists and communists were openly discussing politics while being part of the same movement. This would be unthinkable now. Which brings me to something important: Be careful of people who claim they found the ‘truth’ and all they do from that point on is to defend that ‘truth’. Even with violence. Join those who s e a r c h for truth... ... understand that we can often only see a small piece of a bigger puzzle... that’s why we humans cooperate when we want to find solutions. So I went to see @sorry2botheryou. The experience is hard to describe. It’s funny, sad, powerful, and profound. It’s a love story, it’s social commentary, it’s a comedy, it’s a..... oh.... I’d better not spoil that aspect of it. You get a little bit of everything. It’s very layered. @lakeithstanfield3 and @tessamaethompson just are exceptional. Just go see it!!! #SorryToBotherYou is something you have to experience. Also... Check out the July 17th interview with @bootsriley on @democracynow. #movie #moviereview #BootsRiley
