what do you read in your spare time? you’re one of the most eloquent users i know, id love to hear how you find the media you consume and what your favorites are
omg ei 😊 welcome back to the inbox! thank you for your sweet words although i'm probably not qualified enough to be considered the full definition of eloquent. i am going to preface this post by saying that i definitely don't read as much as i should, so this list is not going to be comprehensive whatsoever. the last time i even visited an in-person library was like half a decade ago, and since then my spare time has been nonexistent lmao. anyways, here are some of my favorite/most recent reads as listed by author:
POETRY
richard siken: i think siken is already well-known both in the literary world and in whatever booktok deems is popular culture. if you don't already know him though, he is best known for his poetry collection crush, which delves into themes of obsession, gay love, and violent eroticism. i actually read this chapbook unknowingly. as in i was hounding sketchy pdf download sites at 3 AM and saw a man with bloodied lips on the cover and decided to read it. he basically became my summer fever dream after that. the way he juxtaposes images is seamless, smoother than water. only richard siken can talk about violence without making it sound violent. i also enjoyed his other poetry collection war of the foxes, especially "portrait of fryderyk in shifting light." i think light is a common motif throughout most of his poems, and he manipulates it effortlessly. the most recent piece i read from him is "piano lesson." i have nothing left to say that he didn't already say, so i would just recommend reading it for yourself. he is the og big brain when it comes to word play.
ocean vuong: he's unforgettable, and i mean that literally because nobody forgets a person named ocean. time is a mother was exactly what the name suggests: an exploration of grief, loss, and the rewind of time after his mother's death. some of the poems are almost cinematic in quality. "künstlerroman" is my favorite because it feels exactly like watching a video tape in reverse. i think his most famous work is "someday i'll love ocean vuong." it was the first piece i ever read from him, and to this day, it remains my comfort poem.
silas denver melvin: i only recently discovered him through his chapbook grit. i think he's also on tumblr @/sweatermuppet. he writes a lot on the trans experience, and his work gives me a mix of southern gothic and country vibes. would definitely read his other publications if i had the time.
chen chen: one thing about chen chen is that he always comes to devour. my favorite works from him are "self-portrait as so much potential" and "song of the anti-sisyphus." you have to put on your thinking cap for some of his poems, but once you grasp the meaning, everything makes sense all at once.
franny choi: "disaster means without a star" was the entire inspiration behind my first rin fic. i relate to her more personally in regards to the diaspora experience, but her collections are worth reading in general because of the sheer quality.
pages matam: his poem "piñata" was what got me into slam poetry. his work mostly consists of political commentary which i feel is particularly relevant in today's social climate. "on learning america's english" also resonates with people who have encountered the entire losing/learning immigrant tongues experience.
laura lamb brown-lavolie: i've only read one spoken word poem from her, and tbh i only needed to read one. "on this the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the titanic, we reconsider the buoyancy of the human heart" is my two-headed calf poem. one day i will get this tattooed.
brendan constantine: once again, this was the result of me being chronically online coupled with the boredom of an august heat wave. i found "the opposites game" through TED. honestly, i was a bit unsure about it at first, but it's a cute little poem that makes you really delve into the intricacies of craft.
TEEN POETRY & PROSE
yasmeen khan: she could mouth her words onto every square inch of my body, and i would still be coming back for more. ingraining them into flesh is not enough. "movie stars" is by far my favorite work from her. she writes about femininity and womanhood so profoundly. it's tragic, but really i wouldn't have it end any other way.
kaya dierks: her writing is basically middle-of-nowhere small town stoner teenage life but personified. "crushed" is my favorite piece from her. the soundtrack for this work was definitely by ethel cain, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
FICTION
madeline miller: i was first introduced to her when i read the song of achilles. let's just say that book had me nonverbal for the greater half of three months. it was my metaphorical hatchet. i buried it once, and i never want to dig it up again. i read circe a few years later. the first time was during the blue hour at an airport, right between one red-eye flight and another transfer. i don't even remember that experience because i was heavily sleep-deprived. i read it again recently for a literature course, this time for academic analysis. overall, i enjoy the the heroine-centric narrative. typically, i'm a bit wary of novels with heavy feminist themes because they either project their agenda too strongly or they run the risk of misrepresentation. circe doesn't exactly have that problem. it was more about empowerment and less about exercising power over others.
charlotte brontë: as a historical figure, brontë was questionable, but jane eyre most certainly was not. that book rewired my brain, and that is saying something because i have never read any classic by choice. and it is so important to me that jane was the ugliest, plainest girl you could ever imagine. also cus i unironically enjoy angst, and this book was full of dramatic misunderstandings.
yoko ogawa: i love japanese literature, so there is no reason not to include this one here. "a peddler of tears" is one of my favorite short stories. i did not expect the ending at all, but it was welcome. something about violence, body gore, and dismemberment being framed as romantic and semi-erotic just gets to me. sign me the hell up. hotel iris is a hit-or-miss with some people. either you like the fact that art makes you uncomfortable or you shut it down completely. for me, i was alright with exploring some of its darker themes, but read at your own discretion.
NONFICTION
ross gay: he lives up to his name both in optimism and in carefree joy. probably one of my favorite creative nonfiction authors simply based off the accessibility of his writing style. easy to read and understand but still hits you with the full force of a semi-truck. i would recommend his book inciting joy. it's a collection of essays that delve into grief, but since this is ross gay, he makes it seem like a quintessential part of life.
paul kalanithi: sixteen-year-old me was mind blown by him cus before that doctors were shrewish old men with bald spots and sterile coats, not poetic surgeons who dissected the anatomy of word and recited t.s. eliot in the most heart-wrenching way possible. he is everything i want to become in both life and death. when breath becomes air literally does take your breath away.

Newest cold take I saw today: someone got offended because Brendan Fraser wore a fat suit for The Whale movie and said they’d rather have a “plus-sized” actor play the part because fat suits are apparently evil and should be forbidden. Mind you, the character is supposed to be 600lbs.
Don't think there's too many 600 pound actors out there, limited number of roles for them to begin with so that would stand to reason anyhow.
It's also called acting for a reason.
Next up I suppose we'll need to cast a real cannibal for the "silence of the lambs" reboot.
I recall people getting mad at Leo for how well he played his character in Django Unchained 'he was too comfortable using all the different racist language' was one of the big ones.
They're actors, they're acting, and sometimes the person who can play the part best isn't going to be the physical ideal for that role and it's it Wolverine then Hugh Jackson will get ripped again, if they need to be 600 pounds either Christian Bale will consume nothing but bacon fat and butter for a year to get up to that, or Brendan Fraser will opt to not destroy his body and wear a fat suit instead.
Eddie Murphy is on the list a few times, including playing Saul the Jewish barbershop customer, certainly they could have found a Jewish person to play the part right.
Or maybe the writer, director, and production company know what they're looking for for their movie and it's as simple as that.
People need to chill and let actors do their jobs, conversely actors need to chill and do their jobs and shut up about things they don't know about as well.
But that's a different post.

Don't you think that with Quentin and Scorsese's speeches about Marvel movies make it possible what the other anon said about Tom no longer receiving appreciation in Hollywood? I don't understand much how it works with movies because it's not what I like to follow, but if acclaimed directors like them are saying this, it proves that they won't look at actors like Tom seriously or pay attention to them.
Case in point...
Jason Mamoa "Aquaman".....But also "Dune"
Mark Ruffalo "The Avengers" + TONS of other Marvel films....But Also "Dark Waters", "Spotlight", "I Know This Much is True"
Brie Larson "Captain Marvel".....But also "The Glass Castle", "Just Mercy"
Florence Pugh "Black Widow".....But also "Don't Worry Darling", "The Wonder", "Dune: Part Two"
Jamie Foxx "The Amazing Spiderman", "Spider-Man No Way Home"......But also "Django Unchained" (a Tarantino film btw lol 😏)
Kurt Russell "Guardians of the Galaxy".......But also "Once Upon a Time In Hollywood" (yet ANOTHER Quentin Tarantino film 😏)
Ben Affleck "Daredevil", "Batman vs Superman".....But also "Argo", "Pearl Harbor", "Good Will Hunting", "Gone Girl"
Samuel L. Jackson "The Avengers" + a TON of other Marvel films.....But also "The Hateful 8" and "Django Unchained" (BOTH Tarantino films 😏)
I can go on and on Anon..... 😏
Rami Malek "No Time to Die".....But also "Bohemian Rhapsody"
Tom Cruise "Mission Impossible".....But also "Jerry Maguire"
Brendan Fraser "George of the Jungle"..... But also "The Whale"
Meryl Streep "Mama Mia", "Mary Poppings Returns"..... But also.... "The Iron Lady", "Lions for Lambs", "The Post"
Adam Driver "Star Wars" Franchise.....But also "House of Gucci", "Marriage Story", "Blakkklansman"
So as you can see Anon......Nobody really cares if you've done "fluff" or superhero movies before.... As long as you can ACT, you are fine, and you will continue to get roles in various different genres.
Besides...Quentin and Martin are not the only movie Directors in Hollywood lol. 😅
Idk why ppl worry about Tom's career so much! Geez... It's exhausting. 😩😓 Tom is fine. He's BEYOND fine.

3, 14, and 19 for the end of year ask game!
I already answered 3 and 19, but am ALWAYS happy to talk about books! Boy oh boy am I.
14. Favorite book you read this year: that's a tough call because I read a lot but I'll do my best.
Symphony of Secrets by Brendan Slocumb - This book is absolutely stellar. It's a mystery/thriller about a music history professor who uncovers a shocking secret about the composer he's dedicated his life to studying.
Other good books I read this year:
Classic lit
Cold Comfort Farm, Stella Gibbons - Historical satire that reads much more modern than its 1932 publication date.
Coming of Age
When We Were Magic, Sarah Gailey - Fiercely tender; I highly recommend anything Sarah writes.
Mystery
Lavender House, Lev AC Rosen - 1950s noir gay detective. I also recently read the sequel and it did not disappoint.
The Satapur Moonstone, Sujata Massey - Set in 1920s India, Perveen Mistry is Bombay's only female lawyer. She's a great character and I'm really enjoying learning more about Parsi culture and Indian politics during that time.
Sci Fi
Unconquerable Sun, Kate Elliott - Sweeping and personal, a stunning cast of characters. The audiobooks are great.
Fantasy
When the Angels Left the Old Country, Sacha Lamb - Delightful, Good Omens vibes but more Jewish.
Re-read
Witchmark, CL Polk - Gaslight fantasy romance. My ultimate comfort read.

The only reason Everything Everywhere All At Once didn’t get all 5 “Big Awards” at the Oscars, is because they decided to list Ke Huy Quan as a supporting actor when he has more screen time than Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs.
EDIT: I do wanna it clear though, I’m glad Brendan Fraser won.

Comfort Movie Tag!
Rules: post 10 of your favorite comfort movies and then tag 10 people.
thank you so much for tagging me @mcbeanzontoast
Lord Of The Rings - Just one of those film (all three) that brings me straight back to being a kid, I was obsessed with these films when I was younger and I still adore them all to this day.
Howls Moving Castle - A recent film i watched at the start of this year but I immediately fell in love with it, it really is such a comfort film I can put on no matter what day I am having
The Last Unicorn - Another from from when I was a kid that i still love to this day, honestly I was obsessed with lots of fantasy creatures when I was younger (still am really) but Unicorns in particular were everywhere in my room
The Mummy with Brendan Fraser. - One of my all time favourite films, it is a classic and I will always love it.
George Of The Jungle - Another childhood film that will always have a special place in my heart.
Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School - Probably one of my all time favourite scooby doo films, when I watched it when I was younger I wanted to go to this school because I wanted to be friends with all the characters.
The Snow Queen from 1995 - Another childhood film that will always make me feel happy.
Pearl - A recent film I have watched and honestly even though i am not one for horror I absolutely loved this film, Mia goth is incredible.
Practical Magic - A classic honestly and since I first watched it I just fell in love with it so much and have been obsessed with witchy things ever since.
Interview With A Vampire - Another classic and all time favorite film of mine and possibly one of my all time favourite vampire films of mine.

Counterparts - A Eulogy For Those Still Here
Canadian metalcore / hardcore punk band Counterparts is a really interesting band, because I’ve got some mixed feelings. That’s not the first time I’ve said that about a band or artist, but I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the new Counterparts record, A Eulogy For Those Still Here. I really enjoyed their last LP, 2019′s Nothing Left To Love, but you could tell that the band was kind of running out of steam. Not that their lyrics, vocals, or anything like that was getting stale, but their sound was just becoming rather repetitive and generic. To be fair, Counterparts has always been super generic, but they’re one of those bands that has been able to be a cut above the rest, thanks due in part to their sound being executed incredibly tightly and vocalist Brendan Murphy being one of the best lyricists and vocalists in the scene. Hell, they’re one of the major players of the metalcore revival of the last few years, especially with that record having more of an early 00s metalcore feel than their previous material (which fell more on the melodic hardcore spectrum, but they had that metalcore crossover sound), but I won’t pretend they’re anything unique. They don’t add anything unique to the genre, other than their vocals and lyrics.
I actually listened to Nothing Left To Love a few weeks ago before Eulogy came out, and I don’t know if it’s aged extremely well. Not because the lyrics are bad, or out of touch, but I remember loving it when it came out towards the end of 2019, but it doesn’t do much for me now. It’s got some good breakdowns, and the lyrics are extremely powerful and poignant, made even more so with Murphy’s vocal performance, but it’s such a generic album. That’s what I was worried about with Eulogy, and why I have mixed feelings on this band, because as much as I love their vocalist and their lyrics, their sound is just really tired and bland at this point. It’s good, make no mistake, but after 15 years, they haven’t done much differently. Their sound is executed rather well, and it’s competent, but they just don’t do as much for me now as they did a few years ago. There are a lot of better bands in the metalcore sphere that are doing unique things, especially bands that take that early 00s sound and make something more unique with it, so I wasn’t sure what Eulogy was going to do.
Unfortunately, not very much, because I don’t really care for this album. Here’s the thing, folks -- it’s good, and if you love this band, you’ll love this album, but because it’s more of the same. The cover art is really cool, and the lyrics are very good, but it sounds like outtakes and B-sides from the last album. Maybe it is a companion piece, which is cool if it is, but it just sounds like what they’ve been doing. There’s nothing wrong with that, as I’ve talked about bands having an “X-factor” in another review, and sometimes that factor can just be the band performing an established sound very well, but when it doesn’t work all the way for me, I’m just not invested. It could also be due in part to the last couple of weeks being very huge in terms of new releases, namely the new Slipknot and Lamb Of God albums dropped (both of which I really enjoy), and I just haven’t listened to the album much, but this album just didn’t leave much of an impression with me. I might listen to it more, and maybe it’ll grow on me, but I’ve listened to it a few times, and while I like it, I don’t really love it. It’s a good metalcore record, but they don’t have anything that makes me want to keep coming back to it, especially when better metalcore albums have come out this year (some of which are also rather generic, just more interesting). If you’re curious, or you really enjoy this band, I’d still recommend it, but I just didn’t get much of out of this album, which is a shame, because this band is really good, I just wish they’d step out of their comfort zone a bit.

Do You Love Me?
"Slougning Towards Galilee!"
"The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia!
National Mental Health Month!
"Do You Love Me?"
Feast of St. Brendan
John 21:15-19 The Message (MSG)
After breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Master, you know I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” He then asked a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Master, you know I love you.” Jesus said, “Shepherd my sheep.” Then he said it a third time: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was upset that he asked for the third time, “Do you love me?” so he answered, “Master, you know everything there is to know. You’ve got to know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. I’m telling you the very truth now: When you were young you dressed yourself and went wherever you wished, but when you get old you’ll have to stretch out your hands while someone else dresses you and takes you where you don’t want to go.” He said this to hint at the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And then he commanded, “Follow me.”
====================================
Pentecost is Sunday, and we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit came to many people and all were one; the Holy Spirit, coming to guide people to practice the works of mercy--feeding the homeless, clothing the naked, providing mental health care, visiting the prisoner, and housing the homeless.
It is very doubtful if Jesus saw the institutional Church in his vision, but instead saw the Reign of God, and his crucifixion and resurrection were symbols of that Reign of God working in the present, a dream of an earth where all were treated fairly, and equally. That is still his dream.
This is Jesus, the one, whom like Peter, I am following into old age and death.
Yet Jesus came to the Jewish people, the Bible is a Jewish book, and we know today God was and is coming to people around the world in many different ways. There is One God, with many expressions!
In these weeks I am working on certification in Religious Trauma; and it has been very challenging, bringing me into the throes of depression and sadness over my own experience growing up and in early adulthood, and over my fear of the trauma I passed on to others.
In coming out, and through living and working the streets of L.A. and San Francisco, I experience the religious trauma of almost every person that I meet.
Looking back I can remember standing and greeting people after my son's memorial service and a group of young women passed through, and with such mournful expressions, patting me on my back, saying: "River we are sorry for your loss, but more sorry that Zac was never saved, and will spend eternity in hell! So comforting! And so sad they did not realize the harm they were doing to me; and several months later I received a call late one night from Joshua (the religious name given to him by this same group when he was saved from his homosexuality and made straight!), crying, he had cut his testicles almost off when he sinned by "becoming a "homosexual" once again." When I picked him up, bleeding, they still wanted me to wait until they could pray the sin out of him.
The reason I am touchy, when people bring their religious, or psychological views to me, and the reason I share little is simply that we both can say things that hurt, really hurt, without meaning to, for there are so many, and in truth no right or wrong answer, but I will talk about the person in front of us who is hungry, homeless, in pain; I will share how we can help; I will listen for hours if need be to their problems and issues.
Personally, I affirm that I believe in God the Father, Almighty.
I believe and trust in Jesus Christ, his Son.
I believe in the Holy Spirit.
I believe and trust in the Three in One.
I respect with all of my heart where others are in their lives and meet them unconditionally. Deo Gratis! Thanks be to God!

Award Season is among us. Our reviewer Actor, Producer and Journalist Alex von Roon can't wait to check out the contenders starting off with HBO' s "Succession". How do you like Alexander as "Ken" in the Hit Movie "Barbie"? Von Roon did work with the director before and enjoyed her performance in "Greenberg"
For "Bild am Sonntag" Alex also met SAG Award nominee Tony Shalhoub on set in his trailer. Some comments were very interesting. We wonder how Mr. Monk would deal with a pandemic such as Corona.
Below please find the complete list of nominations courtesy of SAGAFTRA. Which are your favorites? Comment below.
