I love to see when you post and I get great drama recommendations from you. I recently watched Black Knight and the Ying-Yang Master thanks to your posts and loved them!

I find C-Dramas often give the best dynamics between male characters for BLs because there's so much chemistry and great dynamics even after censorship. It also means that the stories are often better and, for me at least, more interesting, as they often can't just explore the relationship between the characters and instead frame it with the plot. I'm not sure whether you've seen it yet or heard about it, but the new show 'The Spirealm' is great! I wanted to recommend it to you after all the shows you've spoken of. There are so many interesting aspects and details that you can find even after multiple watches that I think you'd enjoy.

I'm so happy to hear that! I'm somewhat famous amongst my friends for pushing recommendations onto them, or at least ranting about the things I've watched in painful detail. My poor wife definitely gets the shortest end of that stick, since she sees me pretty much every day. So she's had to listen to me talk about a lot of dramas and movies she's got absolutely no interest in x'D

She really liked The Yin-Yang Master, though! So it's not all bad. Man, I love that movie so, so much.

While it's terrible that CDramas have to be censored the way they are, I agree that it pushes the creators to explore relationships in a very interesting way. They have to build it into the story in a way that more straightforward BLs can just skip, because they can rely on the physical chemistry to convey the budding relationship.

That said, I admit that CDramas often feel a bit... stilted to me? They're too perfectly choreographed, never a hair or detail out of place, to the point where the characters don't always feel like people to me. Like, they're so obviously characters, not real people, if that makes sense?

That's not to say that I don't enjoy them! Heck, The Untamed is still one of the best dramas I've ever watched, Guardian is one of my favourite dumpster fires, and The Yin-Yang Master movie is one of my go-to's when I need something to completely immerse myself into. But, on the whole, they don't intrigue me the way other dramas or movies might, since they're always so polished. Which means I can't connect with them on the same level as I do with many other pieces of media. I can definitely appreciate the plot, story, characters, aesthetics and so on, but it rarely goes deeper than the surface level. It kind of feels like they're keeping me at arm's length, somehow?

But that's definitely a me problem, since I think it has to do with that thing of mine where I want to analyse every tiny detail. And it's not as fun in CDramas because they make it so obvious that every detail is there for a reason. I mean, it always is in all shows and movies — everything on set is knowingly placed there — but the CDramas don't try to hide it? They even go out of their way to make everything as flawless as possible if they can. And something flawless isn't fun for me to analyse. Like, I can tell that they're putting on a show and that just makes me less interested in trying to find the secrets behind it, I guess?

But, again, that doesn't mean I don't enjoy them! I often do, especially for the aesthetics and the sweeping, dramatic plotlines. But it tends to end up being pretty shallow in my case, since they rarely give me enough to really sink my teeth into. Like, I don't think it's a coincidence that the CDrama I've been the closest to writing fanfics for (Guardian) is also one of the messiest, production wise. I like it when things feel more relaxed and real. Not gritty or anything, just... real.

Anyhow! The Spirealm looks interesting so I'll definitely put it on my list of things to watch! Thank you for the recommendation! :D

Telling everyone that those animals are abused and suffering #-and shouldn't be held captive. Calling the aquarium “the orca prison” and stuff #I remember how annoyed I was seeing them. Because the staff cheerfully told me that “see they live happy they have a lot of food and-#-and nothing to worry about. What else can they want?“#I was so pissed at those “crazy hysterical eco activists” because they were actively ruining such a fun place #Now when I know better I wish I could meet those people and thank them #they got what they were fighting for. well. mostly they did #Hunting orcas is illegal now thanks to them #and breeding stopped too #they refused to let their last surviving Orca free (she was caught. not born in captivity) but they stated they won't try to get more orcas #Every time I see something about wild orcas it's so amazing and every time I see what humans do to them it gets more horrible #With all that said. Every time I watch The Milkman, I swear AJ's acting in the last bit . Something about his tone when he comes up and hugs Peter with the "Hello, mate" is so perfectly uncomfortable. It's such a weird feeling, since I don't even relate to the situation, but somehow that moment just feels really real to me. It's a shame I can't possibly describe through text his exact delivery of that line.

sorry for epic mickey posting on main in 2024 but the remake has me brainrotting so hard again. and I need desperately to unpack the psychology of oswald not only a) recreating mickey's house in wasteland and b) putting it right next to ortensia's house. gus frames it as oswald "hoping you would be forgotten someday" which makes it sound like another act of bitterness on oswald's part, like he believes mickey ending up just like him is inevitable and he's crossing his fingers in anticipation of it. which seems very much in line with his attitude elsewhere in the game, to be fair.

but.......... he recreates a space to feel just like home for mickey. oswald's spent his time in wasteland either carefully constructing a world free of mickey mentions, or living on top of a literal mountain of garbage mickey merch stewing about how much he hates him. but he still makes and maintains a familiar place for mickey to be comfortable, just in case he ends up forgotten too. he also makes him neighbors with ortensia. you could argue that the house would just be a big gotcha when mickey is forgotten, something for oswald to rub in his face in a see, I knew you'd end up here sort of way. but I don't think he'd make that neighbor arrangement out of malice. he wouldn't do that to ortensia, at the very least. she's the most important person in his life -- and part of mickey's family too, by extension. maybe he did actually want mickey to feel like part of the family, like he wasn't totally alone with his sister in law living right next door.

oswald is bitter and jealous and angry -- but he also knows how awful it is to find yourself in wasteland, removed from everything (and potentially everyone) you know and love. for as much as he resents mickey, he doesn't actually want him to suffer. so he's got a house and a family waiting for him.

A brief review of Modern Nature at the Barbican last night.

The event was just over an hour and a half and all the performers stayed on stage throughout. I was in the third row so had a really good view of the stage (and… umm… my ‘subject of interest’). The performance was a really effective and emotional mix of readings, music, film and photography.

The performers shared the readings but I’d say Shaun definitely did a higher proportion overall. Sadly (for me at least) he performed in his RO accent rather than his natural scouse. It worked for the performance but I love hearing his natural accent and was really hoping he would use it for this.

He really ‘performed’ his readings compared to the others (no criticism of anyone, they were all brilliant) - he used his hands and face really expressively. He also laughed and responded to other things happening on stage throughout.

The show opened with a musical piece followed by a short film and reading by Tilda Swinton. The rest of the performance was on stage, other than a short recorded piece by Maxine Peake at the end.

As the evening progressed the content was far more difficult to hear - Jarman talking about how many friends had died, about discrimination against gay people, about his own deteriorating health - it made me cry (which is no mean feat… I’m not a cryer in general!). Shaun seemed emotional as some parts too both as he was reading and when he was listening to the music.

Also.. fun fact.. the Guildhall School of Drama where Evans did his degree is next door to the Barbican so I expect he’s performed there during his student days and knows it well.. (crappy photo of Guildhall below…)

And for those who enjoy the shallow end of the pool:

Evans looked to be in his UIKY press interview outfit - ie this navy velvety number with light blue shirt (buttoned up…) and a navy v neck sweater (possibly the HIA ‘rehearsal vest’, possibly a sweater).

So at least three layers.. and I’m betting on another under the shirt..

Socks were black and apparently not the usual hiking style (this detail is for you @season-77 😂) - although maybe I wasn’t close enough for this detail.

The performers stood for much of the time, although they did sit at some points. Evans had his usual stance with hands firmly in pockets other than when he got more animated for some of the readings.

When he sat there were some OT style fidget moments which definitely increased the longer the performance went on. At one point I thought he was going to lose his mic but he managed to recover it in time 😂

I did spot him leaving - with his backpack. He was with another one of the readers and chatting and I didn’t try to speak to him. But it was great to go and to see him and the overall performance I really hope he does more like this..

I went to my first ever pride yesterday (I'm originally from the countryside and have been too exhausted or depressed every year since moving closer to the city to go babey) and it was super fun :) about 100 000 people were in the pride parade this time, apparently, which is pretty impressive considering that the entire population of oslo is about 700 000. one fuckhead preacher with a loudspeaker making an annoyance of himself where we were standing, but no one really gave a fuck (correctly) so whatever lol. it did give me a valuable real life image to hang the concept of 'vocal minority' on, because that truly was 100 000++ people being cool and having a good glittery gay time and three (3) shitheads trying to ruin it, and the only reason those three were heard at all was that they were clearly pros at evil and came with a wireless mic so people couldn't easily disconnect it and shut them up

#big shoutout to my sister for helping me get it together and actually go this year haha <3 #I did almost miss my bus in the morning because I'd become too wrapped up in a deathloop meta post but well I would be like that #also on a more personal note brought on by seeing a lot of beautiful queer women all in one place...#W.omen. how are they so. you understand. all of them.#pear shaped women everywhere especially you will always have a lover a supporter a respectful but admiring perceiver in me amen #the preacher guy did fall into inadvertent comedy a lot but I don't think he realized it (ni TWERKAR mot mig!! rent free in my head now)#he was also the only one who could remember the fucking script they'd clearly brought fhdskjfa his two little henchmen #did not have the sauce and audibly mixed up words and had to correct themselves and only got to take one turn each #it really made me think about how much of that style of preaching/performance is the sheer grating continuity of it --#the sensory battery of just. words and intensity and shaming rhetoric spewed out continuously.#they all have the same cadence and style of delivery (this guy was swedish to top it all off so the accent on the english run of the script #very funny. also very funny that he thought a norwegian crowd would appreciate a swede telling them what to do #and to return to our 'national values' lmao. our national values have historically included the law of jante (unfortunately)#and wanting dudes like you to fuck off buddy. every time a pride truck came by with speakers to drown him out the crowd cheered)
