Wym about Ammonite being a joke? Never saw it but it's been recommended to me before so I'd love to know the tea
Honestly, Ammonite is a pretty transparent ripoff of Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
PoaLoF is a movie written and directed by a lesbian, Céline Sciamma, to deliberately transgress typical romantic tropes; it's made to look sensitively and meaningfully at female experience, to "celebrate the sexiness of consent" as Sciamma put it, and even if it doesn't have a happy ending, to show the possibility of connection and active desire even for a brief time between women. It's designed to challenge traditional female roles and to display female interiority even within the confines of patriarchal worlds and the patriarchal parts women play to/around each other. It is a lesbian film with lesbian interests at its core; she specifically rejects how popular media elides the word "lesbian" and insists on the movie's lesbian identity. In classic dyke fashion she also cast her ex as one of the main characters, that being Adèle Haenel, who recently left the film industry, rejecting it as a prop for "a capitalist, patriarchal, racist, sexist world of structural inequality." Haenel also famously walked out of the César Awards after Roman Polanski won Best Director in 2020.
Ammonite is a movie, written and directed by a man, that in some shots and beats is almost 1:1 with PoaLoF. The extremely visible similarity actually disgusted me when I first watched it. It stars two straight women, Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, in an apparent sort of "biopic" about Mary Anning, about whose sexuality very little was actually known; as my friend @naiadpress has let me know (just today we were talking about this, actually) there's no historical basis for the lesbian romance--which, don't get me wrong, I'm soooooo down to pretend historical women were gay/bi when they weren't; but it's a cherry on top of the male prerogatives taken in the movie that a random woman for whom no evidence of a gay history exists would be grabbed out of the history books and subjected to a dramatization that doesn't have parallels in her actual life. The only actual lesbian involved in the production is Fiona Shaw, who can do nothing wrong in my eyes. It's just a kind of... Embarrassing attention-grab attempt by a man, done to capitalize on the hegemony English-language movies and famous English-speaking actresses have in the awards sphere.
Watch PoaLoF, then watch Ammonite right after and you'll see what I mean. Ammonite is just such a disappointment, through and through. And sorry, but the sex scene is ATROCIOUS. Brutally unsexy and unerotic and not a pit or pussy hair in sight. Saddest thing I've ever seen.

Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve in The Last Métro (François Truffaut, 1980)
Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Jean Poiret, Andréa Ferréol, Paulette Dubost, Jean-Louis Richard, Maurice Risch, Sabine Haudepin, Heinz Bennent. Screenplay: François Truffaut, Suzanne Schiffman, Jean-Claude Grumberg. Cinematography: Néstor Almendros. Production design: Jean-Pierre Kohut-Svelko. Film editing: Martine Barraqué. Music: Georges Delerue. François Truffaut said in interviews that The Last Métro is a kind of companion film to Day for Night (1973), his behind-the-camera account of making a movie. Truffaut, who was born in 1932, was only a boy during the war but he recalls the theater -- both the movie theater and the legitimate stage -- as a kind of refuge from hardship, the hunger and cold brought about by wartime rationing. People gathered in theaters for communal warmth. The story is principally about an actress, Marion Steiner (Catherine Deneuve), who is trying to keep the theater that was run before the war by her husband, Lucas (Heinz Bennent), open. Lucas, who is Jewish, is rumored to have fled to America, but in fact he is hiding in the cellar of the theater while Marion, with the help of the rest of the regular company, stages a play. The director, Jean-Loup Cottins (Jean Poiret), is working from the notes Lucas made on the play before his disappearance. Cottins has his own dangerous secret: He's gay, and hence subject to persecution by the occupying Nazis. A new leading man, Bernard Granger (Gérard Depardieu), joins the company, and inevitably a tension develops between him and Marion. Meanwhile, Lucas has figured out ways to listen in on rehearsals and make suggestions to Marion that she passes along to Cottins, who is unaware of Lucas's hiding place. Marion also has the difficulty of dealing with the authorities, who could close the theater at any moment, especially when the influential critic Daxiat (Jean-Louis Richard), a collaborator with the Nazis, takes an interest in her and the play. What takes place on stage, namely the sexual tension between the characters played by Marion and Bernard, often mirrors what's happening backstage. The Last Métro is a well-crafted movie -- Truffaut wrote the screenplay with Suzanne Schiffman -- that was France's entry for the best foreign-film Oscar and won a raft of the French César Awards, including one for cinematographer Nestor Almendros.

FilmNation and Charades are teaming up to present “Alpha,” the new film from Julia Ducournau, to buyers at Cannes.
It’s the same place where Ducournau caused a sensation with 2021’s “Titane,” her subversive and divisive body horror film, which won the  Palme d’Or, the festival’s top award. Ducournau became the second female director to win the award, following Jane Campion (“The Piano”). “Anatomy of a Fall” director Justine Triet would become the third female winner in 2023. Ducournau’s other films include 2016’s “Raw,” a coming-of-age film about a young vegetarian who develops a taste for cannibalism.
“Alpha’s” cast includes Golshifteh Farahani, who appeared in “The Patience Stone” and “Paterson,” as well as César award-winning Tahar Rahim, best known for his work in “The Mauritanian,” “A Prophet” and “The Serpent.”
“‘Alpha’ is Julia’s most personal, profound work yet, and we are looking forward to a global audience discovering the story with as much excitement as we did,” FilmNation Entertainment and Charades said in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring the film to market in Cannes and to launch sales together for the first time and collaborate in this way.”
But beyond saying it’s Ducournau’s “most personal, profound work,” there’s not much to be gleaned about the plot of “Alpha.” The two sales agents say they are keeping the logline for the project “under wraps.”
The film’s producers include Mandarin & Compagnie (Eric Altmayer and Nicolas Altmayer) and Petit Film (Jean des Forêts and Amélie Jacquis). It will be a co-production with Frakas Productions (Jean-Yves Roubin and Cassandre Warnauts).
“’Alpha’ is a new page in Julia Ducournau’s corpus that is both very consistent with the previous ones and entirely new in its tone,” the producers said. “To match an exceptional project, it was necessary to transcend conventions, as evidenced by the exceptional combination of producers on one hand and international sales companies on the other.”
This is the first partnership for Paris-based Charades and New York-based FilmNation Entertainment. The companies will collaborate on the world sales and Cannes launch of the film.
Ducournau is represented by Film Talents. Farahani is represented by Agence Adequat and CAA. Rahim is represented by Agence Adequat and UTA.

Mindhunter Is Officially Dead; Long Live @mindhunter David Fincher is closing the door on his perfect true-crime series, one of Netflix’s best offerings. David Fincher is officially laying Mindhunter to rest. In an interview with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, ahead of receiving an honorary César award, the director reflected on his Netflix series about FBI agents profiling serial killers. The show debuted in 2017, and lasted for two perfect seasons. For years, Fincher has neither confirmed nor denied that a third might happen—but now, it seems he has finally closed the door on Mindhunter once and for all.  “I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for season three],” Fincher said. He doesn’t blame the streamer for that though. “They took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Kill er [his next feature]. It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness.” Fincher’s remarks won’t come as a surprise to fans of Mindhunter, who have been hoping for a potential third season since 2019. There were warning signs even then that the second season might be the last, including an early 2020 announcement that the show had been put on “indefinite hold” and that lead actors Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv had been released from their contracts. In an interview with Vulture later that year, Fincher was asked if the show was done. “I think probably,” he replied. Why? In part because the critically acclaimed series was never a ratings smash for @Netflix, and because the production itself was grueling and time-consuming. “It’s a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three,’” Fincher explained. #Mindhunter #serialkillers https://www.instagram.com/p/CpBTHqiP_hg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche in Clouds of Sils Maria (Olivier Assayas, 2014) Cast: Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, Chloë Grace Moretz, Lars Eidinger, Johnny Flynn, Angela Winkler, Hanns Zischler. Screenplay: Olivier Assayas. Cinematography: Yorick Le Saux. Production design: François-Renaud Labarthe. Film editing: Marion Monnier.  Olivier Assayas's Clouds of Sils Maria demands almost as much attention after you've finished it as it did while you were watching it. The set-up is this: An actress, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche), is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous when she was only 18. Now that she's in her 40s, however, she will play the older woman who has a relationship with the character she earlier played. She accepts reluctantly, and then wants to back out when she finds that the younger actress, Jo-Ann Ellis (Chloë Grace Moretz), who has been cast in her original role is a Hollywood star best known not only for working in sci-fi blockbusters but also for her off-screen affairs that draw the attention of the paparazzi and Internet gossip sites. However, Maria's personal assistant, Valentine (Kristen Stewart), thinks Jo-Ann is a good actress who has been exploited by the media, and persuades Maria to take the role. Maria and Valentine retreat to the home of the play's author, who has recently died, in Sils Maria, a Swiss village, where Valentine helps Maria learn her lines. As the film progresses, the lines of the play echo not only Maria's own feelings about growing older, but also the somewhat ambiguous relationship between Maria and Valentine. Indeed, it's often not entirely clear whether actress and assistant are reciting the lines of the play or are voicing their own feelings for each other. And then the casting of the film brings out another layer of meaning: Stewart is best-known for the Twilight movies, precisely the kind of Hollywood film that Maria turns up her nose at when she first hears about Jo-Ann's career. Assayas, who also wrote the screenplay, deftly juggles all these layers of art and reality, but the film would be nothing without Stewart's superb performance, which won her the César Award in France as well as the best supporting actress awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. There are those who think the film is more talk than substance and that it feels like a "high-concept" product: Persona (Ingmar Bergman, 1966) meets All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1950), perhaps. But seeing Stewart interact with Binoche more than justifies it for me.
