A Fascinating Book I'm Reading
Tumblr media
One of the best non-fiction reads I've read in a while, it's not a military history book, but details specifically the Confederate government, culture, society, the legal system, and economy.
What I find most fascinating about the book was just how fucked up the Confederacy became even from the early outset. Especially in terms of law and order. Due to the incredible manpower demands most men of military age either enlisted or were later conscripted into the army. This resulted in severe manpower shortages at home. When this happened, the system of slavery the Confederates were fighting for became a grave liability as there was no one left to control the millions of slaves that populated the south. As a result, whole plantations of slaves would run away and form free communities in the wilderness, surviving by pillaging plantations and farms, or robbing travelers on highways. In Louisiana there was a slave town hidden deep in the swamps that housed 2,000 people! At the same time thousands of Confederate soldiers were deserting as the war started going bad. Many soldiers found that their homestead and family was falling apart in their absence, so they deserted. These deserters were declared outlaws, and as a result many banded together, formed groups, and made a living as bandits and marauders.
At the same time many officers in the Confederate army who were garrisoned in specific places became de facto military dictators and warlords over the territory they controlled. They often disobeyed the law and refused to carry out orders issued by the Confederate government, but due to manpower shortages and the disorganization of the government there was little that could be done to reign them in. Often, these warlord Confederates acted as bandits, pillaging the territory they controlled not just for food and necessary supplies but for valuables as well. In many cases, whole towns and even counties rebelled against Confederate military authorities as they were sick of being pillaged by warlord Confederates. A good example was Jones County, Mississippi which actually seceded from the Confederacy as a result. Often, these rebel towns and counties survived by banditry and became marauders themselves just to make a get by.
According to the author, by 1863 much of the rural south was in a state of lawlessness and anarchy with the countryside controlled by bandits, marauders, independent towns or counties, pro-Union enclaves, and military warlords. Like bruh, this would be a good setting for an open world RPG game, perhaps something set in the Red Dead Redemption Universe.
Anyway if you are a Civil War buff I highly recommend this book.

Humans are weird: The Reckoning Virus
( Please come see me on my new patreon and support me for early access to stories and personal story requests :D https://www.patreon.com/NiqhtLord Every bit helps)
War with the Interaxie was an inevitable outcome for humanity and the entire galaxy knew it.
Border disputes, clashing rights over trade, subtle threats between delegates and near constant animosity between the two powers all but assured that they would come to blows. Along the entire shared border between the two powers a sense of dread and waiting could be felt on every world as if they could sense the brewing storm just over the horizon.
Yet humanity could not afford to be the aggressors for a change.
Unlike their previous conflicts the Interaxie had a well-organized military and an industrial power base to support them for decades of sustained combat. They had dozens of worlds to draw upon near limitless manpower reserves meaning any conflict could be drawn out into a bloody stalemate. While the humans were not unfamiliar with this style of warfare it was an outcome they did not wish to see realized.
To prevent this outcome humanity put a plan into motion called “The Reckoning”, which when completed would hand them victory in the war within a few months at best.
While the Interaxie were gathering their strength and hiding their growing fleet strength behind ‘military exercises” a series of shipments were being delivered to the core worlds of the Interaxie. They arrived at trade ports and were moved to waiting warehouses as their paperwork was checked only for the shipments to mysteriously vanish. It wasn’t unheard of for a shipment or two to go missing at such facilities, and though on some of the world’s their disappearance was noticed and investigated for the majority of others they were written off as clerical mistakes. The trade network between worlds was after all vast and overwhelmed by bureaucratic red tape so it was not unheard of for a shipment to be mishandled.
Such trivialities were soon overshadowed as the eventual war broke out and trade quickly shut down between the two powers. What had been mild border conflicts broke out into ruthless fleet sized engagements that turned entire systems into orbital graveyards of ships overnight. Human Hammerhead dreadnoughts were taking on entire swarms of Interaxie drone swarms in space while the Terran Marine Corps were barely holding their own against Interaxie armored divisions on the planets of Theta, Primus, and Dollore.
The fighting was intense and just as predicted the Interaxie began to call upon their vast manpower reserves early in an attempt to simply overrun human opposition and claim a swift victory. Legions began mustering on their core worlds waiting for transport to the front when the war took a turn for the worse for the would-be alien conquerors.
Without warning several viral outbreaks began to be reported from the Interaxie core worlds. Infected individuals began showing heightened states of aggression and delirium with the worst cases quickly devolving to bouts of madness and rage. What made it worse was when local officials quarantined an area in hopes of isolating the infected a new series of outbreaks would happen somewhere else entirely leaving containment out of the question.
It did not take long for civil unrest to break out as the virus spread into major populated areas and shortly after states of emergency to be declared. Factories ground to a halt as the workers fled the infection to protect themselves and their loved ones, farms and fields left unattended as their caretakers no lay lost to the grips of the disease leaving shelves unfilled and empty. Fights broke out for what supplies remained and though provisions could have been supplied from off world spaceports were soon overrun by those wishing to flee. When the infected reached a critical state of the virus’s development they began lashing out at anyone and everyone within arms reach resulting in the near total collapse of order on worlds as waves of infected ran through the streets
The legions that had been mustering to be sent the front soon found themselves being redeployed for containment or worse, becoming largely infected themselves and losing all combat effectiveness. Interaxie warriors were forced to put down many of their comrades who had succumbed to the virus leaving them horrified by their actions. It was worse for those deployed as part of containment teams who gunned down thousands of infected civilians on the quarantined worlds, many of which were related to the warriors by blood.
Within a month a dozen worlds had been locked under quarantine with another handful now desperately holding on as infection rates continued to rise, all the while the war with the humans continued. The sudden loss of manpower and war material was certainly noticed on the front and the humans shifted tactics. Every engagement they forced the Interaxie into using whatever reserves they had left as much as possible. Soon it was not uncommon for three Interaxie soldiers to be rationing one power cell for their rifles while their fleets lay in high anchor above their worlds due to lack of fuel to move them out of system.
Unable to meet the current demands of the war and handle the outbreaks spreading through their core worlds, the Interaxie soon sued for peace. The humans were not sympathetic with the Interaxie plight and their demands were steep.
1.       Three border systems would be transferred over to human control.
2.       A DMZ would be established from the newly taken territory and the remaining Interaxie domain which no ship from either side would cross.
3.       The Interaxie would be forced to repay a war debt to humanity in the sum of three trillion credits over the course of the next twenty solar years.
4.       Human monitoring stations would be placed inside Interaxie space to prevent future acts of aggression.
Had it been at any other time the Interaxie would have rather fought on until the bitter end than accept such harsh terms, but with the virus continuing to cripple their military and economy they were left with no choice but to relent and agree to the terms.
With that the Interaxie/Human war came to an abrupt end and the Interaxie redeployed their entire military forces to combat the growing viral outbreaks, all the while Terran Special Services watched from afar and grinned.
Several months prior to the war they had been responsible for shipping a number of unremarkable containers through a series of dummy corporations and unaffiliated alien trade networks until they arrived on the Interaxie core worlds. They bore no human markings and their paperwork was all in order leaving nothing for suspicion. Once they had been moved to the warehouses for processing TSS operatives quietly removed the containers and began distributing the contents across the worlds.
Industrial factories, mining complexes, agricultural farms, super markets, water treatment facilities, power plants; any and all critical infrastructure locations were located and seeded with the contents of the containers before the operatives quickly fled off world.
When war finally broke out a signal was remotely sent and each of the packages cracked open releasing their deadly contents. Swarms of tiny mosquitos genetically bred to carry what was known as the Reckoning Virus were soon released and began spreading the virus with every victim they came into contact with.
It was an ecological disaster of unimaginable proportion. Not only did the insects infect the personnel of the facilities they were placed in, but they also began to spread outwards and begin breeding in new areas. Any source of water soon became a deadly petri dish for them as they reproduced at an alarming rate releasing further swarms of insects. On these alien worlds they had no natural predators and what wildlife did attempt to eat them soon became deadly sick with the virus as well leading to rampant overpopulation of the bugs.
The Interaxie were well aware of the seemingly good timing the outbreaks had been for the humans and long suspected their involvement but could not prove anything as the TSS had planned for such eventualities. None of the devices used were of human origin and even if they could track down how they had arrived on world the series of dummy companies and alien trade networks used to ship them there resulted in a labyrinth of legal networks and commissions needed for even the slightest scrap of information that would lead nowhere.
For almost ten years the virus remained effective before the Interaxie were finally able to find a way to not only cure the virus but also eliminate the invasive species of mosquitoes, but by then the damage was already done. Both their military and trade had been crippled by the viral outbreaks and with several of their primary manufacturing worlds now defunct the flow of goods to the remaining worlds was almost a trickle. Extreme measures of rationing were implemented which only led to further discontent and civil unrest which in turn was brutally put down by military forces. What had once been a galactic power now had been reduced to a third rate kingdom barely able to hold a trade agreement out of their domain let alone ever again extend their power through military force.

tag watches the walking dead update: ok so im at the episode where andrea and michonne get to woodbury and im just saying, killing those army guys was the dumbest decision ever.
like you had a bunch of trained soldiers, grateful to you, with weapons they know how to use better then you, more manpower for the rest of the civilization with plenty of food and shelter to go around, and you killed them??? men who would have been an incredibly valuable asset to you and your base??? who would have been more skilled then any of your self trained men could even dream of???? and you killed them for the supply they had that they wouldve given to you already if you let them stay at your base???? are you fucking stupid?????
i swear they make people in this show dumb for dramatic effect, because how tf are you governor when you made a decision like that??????

Setting Blurb: The Solar System (Reworked)
• Sol Invictus: The physical “center” of human civilization in the 3600′s. Most settlement of the Unconquerable Sun (renamed after the Human-Crystalline War) centered around the development of solar energy platforms by all members of the Big Three. Specially made habitats built to withstand the Sun’s heat also orbit it, housed by those that wish to hide from the rest of the Universe in the light of the Sun (Ex-Serviles, disgraced WCOF Party members, and market failures).
• Mercury: Mercury was not subject to colonization like the rest of the bodies in the Solar System. Rather, it was made into a giant strip mine to feed the Corporate Empire’s growing infrastructure. To supply the needed manpower, large numbers of Serviles (violent criminals sent to be worked to death) and industrial Serfbots were shipped to serve in removing any/all valuable materials the tiny planet could offer. Some enterprising Imperials have pitched the idea to convert the mined-out portions of Mercury into layered habitats. A moderately sized population of monks has been growing as well.
• Venus: The terraforming of Venus was a massive project initiated around the end of the Second Dynasty. The Human-Crystalline war put a temporary pause on that project. The once-Amber Planet is now entering the end of its second Ice Age, the descendants of those that staked claims centuries ago were more than eager to live their ancestors’ dreams. To celebrate the triumph of Venus’ terraforming, the settlers of Venus have all employed passive cooling into their housing, no more living in air-conditioned cylinders for them! The majority of the planet (and orbit) is CorpEmp, with the palatial estates of the Kechua-go, Silavfirika, and the Eurekan Ulus dot their three Terrae (major continents). The Neuhansa of the United Markets also enjoy perusing their open-aired markets, located on prime beachfront and alpine real estate dotting the planet. Even the World Congress of Freedom’s prestiged Party members have a few dachas in secluded locales.
• Earth: The former crown jewel of Human civilization, slowly healing from the near-endless use of nuclear weapons used during the Human-Crystalline War 800 years ago. With the Earth’s decreasing radiation, more and more call for the re-colonization of the homeworld. A few important sites remained inhabited, mostly areas that attract tourists and pilgrims. The many battlefields that dot the surface are treasure troves of old technology and resources (human and alien). While a majority of Earth’s human inhabitants evacuated, some decided to wait out the apocalypse. Many survivalist and bunker-building cultures thought that the rest of humanity would be “purged” by the invading aliens and retreated into their underground shelters. Slowly but surely these cultures have emerged and regained contact with the outside world. The Big Three’s plans to individually retake Terran territory may result in inevitable conflict with these “successors” to the Earth. The environmental fanatics of the Green Consensus have maintained holdings on the Earth as well, and they have made it known that those responsible for the nuclear bombardment will not have an inch of the Earth without paying some sort of price...
Earth Orbit: The myriad peoples who live in Earth's orbit pride themselves on being the "guardians of the motherworld". Being directly above the birthplace of humanity, Earth Orbit is the most culturally diverse and has the largest population in the Solar System. While many Terrans bemoan not living on Earth proper, many more recognize the profit in living right above the universe’s largest wilderness preserve and pilgrimage site. Each of the Big Three have claimed a chunk of Earth orbit for themselves: The Terran Viceroyalties, CorpEmp’s mighty satrapies in their cylindrical habitats control all Geocentric Orbit above 35,000km (everything below geosynchronous has been a no-go zone post Crystalline War). The Viceregal habitats are built as counter-rotational pairs, one habitat houses the population in a patchwork of rural communities (its interior recreating the landmass of an empire in the corresponding Viceroyalty), and the second a nature preserve (both based on the environment of the habitat’s founders). Their ultimate goal is constructing a series of linked habitats known as “rungworlds” surrounding the Earth. Earth-Moon Lagrange point 5 is under United Markets control. The leadership of the many Megacorps that survived WW3 and the rise of CorpEmp laid claim to this Lagrange point during the divvying up of the Solar System after what was called “Worlds War One”. Their slowly losing ground to the Covenanters of the Belt is of no concern to those that dwell in Terran orbit. UM habitats are a mishmash of architectural styles, designed to attract different kinds of immigrants and tourists. Some habitats don’t house any permanent population at all and are meant to offer some sort of service (casinos, colossal hunting preserves, etc). Their latest operation is offering discount prices for prospecting equipment for those eager to do some “private Terran reclamation” on the Earth’s surface. Lagrange point 4 is fully controlled by the World Congress of Freedom. Although the Party headquarters has been relocated to Titan, E-M L4 is still a large population center for the WCOF. Habitats constructed for habitation in this polity tend towards the minimalist. Inside the habitats, most if not all space provides some function to serve the revolution. Needs are met but wants may cost the average Party member that doesn’t have the right connections. WCOF space in Terran orbit is heavily fortified, with Clonscript garrisons on every habitat providing security for the resident Party Members.
• Luna: The first celestial body to be colonized by Humanity, the many domed habitats on the Moon’s surface now served as humanity’s oldest settlements still surviving the destruction of the Human-Crystalline War. The Big Three’s settlements on the near side of Luna are a patchwork, as colonial claims were established on a “first come, first serve” basis. This resulted in frequent border skirmishes between the colonies. This bad blood has yet to really subside even in the 3600s. As a result, the Moon was never fully terraformed. Large, pressurized domes serve as the barriers to the many colonies, and lava tubes beneath the lunar surface were made habitable as well. The Big Three colonies are concentrated in the Lunar Maria, with Reserves preferring their own little domes on the far side. Lots of millenarians flock to the dark side, in a manner of speaking.
•  Mars: As greenhouse emissions are used to help terraform the Red Planet, Mars is only second to the Asteroid Belt in terms of industrial output. Mars was divided evenly into thirds, following a series of border conflicts erupting into Humanity’s first interplanetary war. Each of the Big Three received three Terrae each on the Red Planet. CorpEmp received Tempe, Xanthe, and Sirenum Terrae. The United Markets received Arabia, Sabaea, and Noachis Terrae. Finally, the WCOF took Cimmeria, Promethei, and Tyrrhena Terrae. Aonia Terra, was set aside to serve as a wilderness preserve for retro-engineered megafauna. Argyre Planitia was designated for extensive Reserve settlement. Mars was the site of the second worst terrestrial battles in the Human-Crystalline War, leading to lots of expended munitions that can be dug out of the ground. This resulted in munition excavation and recycling being the largest industry on the Red Planet and plenty of minor conflicts have broken out over rights to spent shells along the Big Three’s colonial borders.  Phobos became exclusive CorpEmp territory. The entire moon serves the Imperial Space Force; and is dotted with training, construction, and housing facilities. Deimos was divided by the UM and WCOF, with plenty of Reserve settlements acting as a buffer between the two.
• Asteroid Belt: While CorpEmp and the WCOF control “gateways” through the Outer Solar System, the major centers of the Asteroid Belt, Ceres, Pallas, and Vesta, are exclusively under United Markets control. Unlike the Inner Solar System, which is mostly the domain of the UMs founding megacorporations, the Asteroid Belt is home of the UM’s Covenanter culture. Small, insular, and very militant mining communities, Covenanters have slowly grown to become the dominant culture within the UM. So much so, that many Megacorp personnel defected to the Covenanter memetic when they evacuated to the Belt during the Human-Crystalline War. The Covenanters have not rested on their laurels and launched multiple colonial expeditions within and beyond Sol in recent centuries. The pirate mothership Libertatia, flying under the banner of the UM, also prowls the Belt to prey upon statist spacecraft.
• Jupiter: Following the conclusion of the Worlds War One, and the consolidation of colonial territories in the Inner Solar System, the Big Three came together to divide the Outer Solar System. Rather than sharing the outer planets, the Big Three split the gas giants between them. CorpEmp received Jupiter the King of the Planets. Slowly but surely, concentric band of settlements formed orbiting closer and closer to Jupiter itself as CorpEmp tech could counter the planet’s strong magnetic field. To prevent Jupiter’s growing colonial project being a projection of the Terran Viceroyalties’ influence, the earliest colonies were constructed with a quota system, with a certain amount of kingroups from each Viceroyalty to move into the colonies. This policy was subsequently dropped as the Human-Crystaline War entered its terrestrial warfare phase, and refugees fleeing the Inner Solar System needed housing. Similar to the Terran Viceroyalties, each of the Galilean moons’ orbits serves as an autonomous entity, their precedence ranked in order of settlement. Except for Io (which is mined for its resources), the moons themselves are mined for ice and water, and are home to aquatic life (mostly Terran stock, with a few indigenous lifeforms). Seafood is a staple of Jovian diet. Minor moons and the Trojans are dotted with small CorpEmp settlements and independent squatters. The Hildan asteroids were (begrudgingly) ceded to the United Markets. Jova Prota (Callisto’s orbit) is home to CorpEmp’s fifth ruling dynasty. Jova Terta (Europa) is the sulking ground of House Rotthey of Europa (a cadet branch of the first dynasty).
• Saturn: Saturn, after Worlds War One, was awarded to the World Congress of Freedom. Immediately, the Party Leadership drew up plans to develop the ringed planet as the “revolutionary core” of human space. Titan, due to its cold temperatures, was slated for a special sort of settlement. The Party Leadership sought to recreate the old cybersyn system of economic management, and the vast computer complexes required for such an undertaking would use Titan as a planetary cooling system. The others 145 moons of Saturn would be mined until they were hollowed out and made to spin so they provided Earth-like gravity. Initially, there wasn’t a large rush to populate the new territories. Non-Party citizens moved to Saturnian orbit, as Party membership was offered to those that would help bring the Party’s vision of Saturn to life. The population of Party members would dramatically increase in the 2800’s during the Human-Crystalline War, as the fighting on Mars, Earth, and Venus forced many civilians to flee into the Outer Solar System. The decisive space battle in Saturn’s orbit, that ended major combat operations of the war. Most of Saturn’s minor moons have been made habitable in the 3600’s, with Titan’s governing cybersyndicate having loftier ambitions as the major moons are continued to be hollowed out themselves. The ring of Saturn would be harvested, and replaced with an orbital ring, allowing for even more housing for a larger population.
• Uranus: The third of the Outer Solar Systemto be granted after Worlds War One, Uranus was given to the United Markets. Although the Asteroid Belt already served as their industrial core, the United Markets primarily mined the planetary system for volatiles and ice. Increase in Uranian gases has increased, as it is the easiest of the giants to extract Helium-3. For a time, Uranus was sparsely populated. The Megacorps preferred the thriving markets of the Inner Solar System, and the growing Hoppean Covenant was content to mine the Asteroid Belt to their heart’s content. Uranian colonization was undertaken by only small expeditions, UM and Reserve in affiliation, and primarily staffed by robotic mining equipment. It was only after the Human-Crystalline War, and the devastation of the Inner Solar System did the movers and shakers turn their eyes to the ice giant. Primarily, this was due to the Megacorps’ leadership thinking they could seek shelter in the Belt. The already established Hoppeans, not that receptive to the Megacorps they moved to the Belt to get away from arriving on their turf. So they made it simple: comply with how the Hoppeans run the Belt, or skedaddle. The Megacorps took the latter and began to build their headquarters in Uranian orbit. The planetary system was made a freeport for scientists looking for ways to bring Humanity’s collective population back to pre-war levels (that could afford the rent to orbit Uranus anyway). The “From Scratch Society”, advocates for artificial human genetics, have made Uranus their homeworld (or at least the moon Oberon).
• Neptune: While Jupiter was the primary location for CorpEmp refugees during the Human-Crystalline War, some groups thought it necessary to go further and established themselves on Triton. Gears started turning in the minds of CorpEmp leadership and allowed the settlement of Neptune to continue during the War. Once the War came to an end, the other polities of the Big Three couldn’t really contest the annexation, and as a concession Neptune’s Trojans were ceded to the UM, and Pluto to the WCOF. As Jupiter was CorpEmp’s mining powerhouse, Neptune served as a home for Crystalline War veterans (primarily the Knights of the Starry Temple) and some eccentrics. A few families of engineers, utilizing mass-streaming technology, sought to construct a planetary shell around Jupiter. As Neptune was smaller (and had a weaker magnetosphere) than Jupiter, these engineers then moved into Neptune’s orbit and use that planet as a proof-of-concept to show their plans for Jupiter are feasible.
• Pluto and The Kuiper Belt: Pluto and its four moons were given over to the WCOF after a diplomatic snafu over CorpEmp refugees squatting in Neptunian orbit. Like the Saturnian moons, the end state of each body in Pluto’s orbit is going to be hollowed out and spun up to better allow human habitation. Whatever minerals found inside will be repurposed to further along the construction. While the Inner System houses most of the Party’s membership, and Saturn the Party’s leadership, Pluto would house the more eccentric and problematic members of the Party. Inspired by the Covenanters in the rival UM, the self-styled “Plutonian Congress” seeks to further advance the revolution. The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud are considered “free space”. Too damn big to effectively govern, and no real way of fighting over it all. So, it’s free space. The largest of the Trans-Plutonian objects serves as stations for motherships making their way to and from the Extrasolar Territories. The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud are mostly home to lonely mining habitats, Reserves that really want to be left alone, the occasional Space Force patrol, and the mythical location of the “Catgirl prison complex” (believed to have been built during the Transhuman Wars). Many have tried to find this El Dorado of the stars, but none have succeeded.

"The only Civil War alternate history worth caring about is, "What if they fixed the sewage issue that was contaminating the White House water supply and killing presidents?""
May I also propose: What if Robert E Lee did not resign from the Union army (maybe Viriginia didn't secede) and quickly leads the Union to victory?
I went through a stretch where I listened to a bunch of different talks by historians who discussed Robert E. Lee's military strategy, and based on the evidence, I'm not sure that putting Lee in charge of the Union army means a quick victory. During the early part of the war, he was known as "Granny Lee" for his slow and cautious tactics, and he got a lot of criticism (and a nickname I can't remember) because he had his soldiers using shovels more than guns--focusing on digging entrenchments rather than going after the enemy. If he'd been in charge of the Union army, he may have just been one more commander who frustrated Lincoln with his slowness.
However, Lee did have very aggressive tendencies once the war got going. He went on the offense much more than necessary and lost a huge percentage of his soldiers. (His tactics were actually remarkably similar to Grant's.) It's possible that if he were in charge of the Union army, with its much greater manpower and resources, he'd have taken a much more aggressive stance from the start and been more proactive in going after the Confederates. Yet it's equally possible that Lee, as a Southerner, would have been reluctant to take up strategies that would harm the South and would thus have gone easy on them.
We also can't forget that the Union only managed to win the war once Grant was able to coordinate multiple attacks across multiple fronts. Robert E. Lee spent almost the entire war in Virginia. He was aware of the effects his actions had on the wider war effort, but he was still a largely local commander. I'm not sure a man so loyal to his one state would be able to widen his focus enough to effectively coordinate a nationwide war effort.
In this alternate universe, I think Virginia not seceding (which is the only possible way Lee would have stayed with the Union) would have a much greater effect than having Lee at the head of the army would. (For one thing, West Virginia wouldn't exist as a state). Virginia has a significant amount of land, provided a decent amount of manpower and officers, and was the site of the Confederate capital--right on D.C.'s doorstep. A Virginia in the Union would leave Washington D.C. in a much safer position throughout the war, which could have significantly altered the strategy of both sides.
However, if we assume that circumstances align to make the final part of the premise--a quick Union victory--possible, it would probably just mean the continuation of slavery. The North entered the war aiming to save the Union, not end slavery. The South left to continue slavery, but there was no reason the North had to go to war to end it; they'd spent decades trying to resolve the issue in Congress and the courts, and they could keep trying to do that--so long as the South stayed part of the Union. But after the war dragged on so long and killed so many, they couldn't go back to business as usual--this war would have to end slavery, or else they'd be right back where they started, and all this bloodshed would have been for nothing.
Lincoln was only able to issue the Emancipation Proclamation because of his expanded war powers; if the war doesn't drag on long enough to justify such an action, it's much harder to end slavery. With a slaveholder at the head of the army, it'd be even harder to make the end of slavery a condition of peace. As terrible as that long and bloody war was, it did have the effect of making the end of slavery the only acceptable option for the Union; a shorter, quicker war would likely have failed to resolve the slavery issue, and that'd be an entirely different type of tragedy than the one we got.

Northern Russia must have felt bitterly cold to U.S. soldiers, even though nearly all were from Michigan. On Sept. 4, 1918, 4,800 U.S. troops landed in Arkhangelsk, Russia, only 140 miles from the Arctic Circle. Three weeks later, they were plunged into battle against the Red Army among towering pine forests and subarctic swamps, alongside the British and French. Ultimately, 244 U.S. soldiers died from the fighting over two years. Diaries of U.S. troops paint a harrowing picture of first contact:
We run into a nest of machine-guns, we retire. [Bolsheviks] still shelling heavily. Perry and Adamson of my squad wounded, bullet clips my shoulder on both sides. … Am terribly tired, hungry and all in, so are the rest of the boys. Casualties in this attack 4 killed and 10 wounded.
These unlucky souls represented just one prong of the sprawling and ill-fated Allied intervention in the Russian civil war. From 1918 to 1920, the United States, Britain, France, and Japan sent thousands of troops from the Baltics to northern Russia to Siberia to Crimea—and millions of dollars in aid and military supplies to the anti-communist White Russians—in an abortive attempt to strangle Bolshevism in its crib. It’s one of the most complicated and oft-forgot foreign-policy failures of the 20th century, captivatingly retold in technicolor detail by Anna Reid in her new book, A Nasty Little War: The Western Intervention Into the Russian Civil War.
The specifics of the conflict, which Reid brilliantly weaves alongside personal diaries from the participants, often feel otherworldly. Japanese troops occupied Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East. The mercurial French—at first the most hawkishly pro-intervention out of all the Allies—led the occupation of southern Ukraine, tussling with the Reds over cities now familiar to readers: Mykolaiv, Kherson, Sevastopol, Odessa. The British—who invested the most in the intervention, including 60,000 troops—were crawling all over Russia’s fringes: defending Baku from the oncoming Turks, conducting naval sabotage against the Bolsheviks in the Baltics, and ultimately evacuating the Whites from Black Sea ports as they crumbled in the face of a Red Army onslaught.
The disturbing question hanging over Reid’s excellent book is whether the West is doomed to repeat history. The intervention failed, and if you squint hard enough, today’s intervention in Ukraine may appear similarly futile in the face of a vast and determined Russia with a seemingly endless well of materiel, manpower, and political will. It’s what the far-right flank of Republicans in Congress, Viktor Orban in Hungary, and former U.S. President Donald Trump would lead you to believe. A sense of hopelessness articulated by Edmund Ironside, the British commander of Allied forces in northern Russia during the intervention: “Russia is so enormous that it gives one a feeling of smothering.”
But despite the strong historical echoes, the differences between the two interventions are more instructive than their similarities. A close study poses perhaps an even bigger question: What conditions make for a successful foreign intervention? Yes, the Allies bungled things, but in fairness, they mostly failed because of what was out of their control, rather than what was in it. The most limiting factor was their feckless (and noxious) White Russian allies, a disparate group of anti-Bolshevik socialists and incompetent former Tsarist officers who were Great Russian autocrats at heart. They had the buy-in of neither the Russian population nor, critically, Tsarist Russia’s tapestry of ethnic minorities—from Ukrainians to Balts—whom they sought to restore under Russia’s heel.
The circumstances today are much more favorable. The United States and Europe have a unified and determined partner in Volodymyr Zelensky’s Ukraine, in a struggle with blinding moral clarity. Russia’s economy may be on wartime footing, but collectively the West has significantly more resources at hand. And the task—defending a motivated Ukraine against a hostile invasion—is much less ambitious than trying to topple the government of the largest country in the world. A sober comparison of the two interventions should, in fact, fortify Western resolve that it can see Ukraine through—as long as its own political will, waning now as it did in Western capitals then, doesn’t get in the way.
The critical ingredients of any foreign intervention are clear and achievable objectives, reliable allies on the ground, an assailable adversary, material means, and the political will to finish the job. On nearly every measure, the Allied intervention in Russia was fatally lacking.
Perhaps most striking about Reid’s narrative is that it’s often unclear what exactly the Allied troops were meant to do in Russia. Yes, all Western governments loathed Bolshevism and feared its expansionist and infectious potential. But beyond that, there was little in the way of shared strategy or purpose. In fact, Western troops were initially sent to guard railways and Allied military stores in northern and eastern Russia that they feared would reach German hands. But this was slightly complicated after Germany surrendered in November 1918. As George F. Kennan put it in his masterful volume The Decision to Intervene, the “American forces had scarcely arrived in Russia when history invalidated at a single stroke almost every reason Washington had conceived for their being there.”
Zealous British officers on the ground—egged on by hawkish ministers at home such as War Secretary Winston Churchill, who nearly depleted his own political capital advocating for the quixotic Russian adventure—soon took the initiative to actively intervene and fight the Reds. In other arenas, including southern Ukraine, the mission was clearer in support of the local White forces—though France quickly lost heart and sailed home in April 1919 after it suffered a series of setbacks and mutinies.
Encapsulating this ambiguity were instructions for the U.S. military intervention written personally in a July 1918 memo by President Woodrow Wilson, who was characteristically tortured by the decision and “sweating blood over what is right and feasible to do in Russia.” He opened the memo by warning that military intervention would “add to the present sad confusion in Russia rather than cure it”—yet then committed U.S. troops to aid the Czech Legion operating in Siberia and to northern Russia to “make it safe for Russian bodies to come together in organized bodies in the north.” Hardly clarifying stuff.
U.S. officers took these instructions quizzically. Gen. William Graves, in charge of the 8,000 doughboys in Siberia, was decidedly skeptical about the United States playing a role in the conflict and interpreted Wilson’s instructions as permitting him only to guard railways, not fight the Reds. He later wrote in his memoirs that he had no idea what Washington was trying to achieve. This was all to the chagrin of his more pro-interventionist British colleagues in Siberia, who instead proactively aided the Whites’ monstrously incompetent “supreme ruler,” Adm. Alexander Kolchak, a former head of the Russian Black Sea Fleet who incongruously found himself fighting deep in landlocked Siberia. (He was also, incidentally, a dead ringer for current Russian President Vladimir Putin.)
Which brings us to the White Russians. Perhaps the sine qua non of any foreign intervention, especially one as ambitious as the Western intervention in both Ukraine and in the Russian civil war, are allies on the ground. It’s the difference between the chaos that followed Western intervention in Libya and the successful intervention in the Balkans. On this score, the Whites failed miserably.
It’s hard to know where to begin. Beyond Kolchak, there was the overmatched Gen. Anton Denikin leading White forces in southern Russia, who dissembled to Allied governments about the horrific pogroms against the Jewish population of Ukraine perpetrated by Whites under his watch. And beyond operating across an impossibly large and disconnected front covering the entire periphery of Russia—a country of 11 time zones—the different White factions acted essentially as warlords, with little loyalty or coordination among them.
Just as fatal to the Whites was a conspicuous vacancy: any coherent or compelling ideology. Antony Beevor, in his fabulous new history of the Russian civil war, pins the White loss on both their lack of political program and fractious nature: “In Russia, an utterly incompatible alliance of Socialist Revolutionaries and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against a single-minded Communist dictatorship.”
Contrast all this with the Reds. They controlled the industrial heartland of Moscow and St. Petersburg, operating from the inward out with stronger interior lines of communication. It allowed Commissar Leon Trotsky—who, Reid notes, blossom[ed] into a war leader of near-genius: shrewd, decisive and boundlessly energetic”—to hop on his armored train to shore up flagging fronts as the Whites advanced from the east and south. The Bolsheviks—though enacting ruinous economic policies and initiating the first waves of terror at home—were motivated and possessed a clear ideology that held, at least at that juncture, some appeal to the local population.
And, fundamentally, their will was much stronger than the Whites’ or the West’s. After the devastation of World War I, Allied governments feared the spread of Bolshevism but couldn’t bring their exhausted publics along with them. Here, the historical echoes are most troubling. Public support understandably flagged, and budgetary pressures mounted. As Britain’s Daily Express put it in 1919, in echoes of today’s Republican rhetoric in the United States: “Great Britain is already the policeman of half the world. It will not and cannot be the policeman of all Europe. … The frozen plains of Eastern Europe are not worth the bones of a single British grenadier.” Rolling White setbacks in Siberia and southern Russia were the nail in the coffin. Then, as now in Ukraine, foreign political support for intervention depended most on the sense of momentum on the battlefield.
The job of foreign-policy makers is to distinguish between what is in versus out of their control. To the degree that they intuit favorable conditions—allies, geography, the enemy’s vulnerability—then the task is to focus on and optimize the things they can manage: strategy and objectives, mobilizing political will, providing the materiel to support the effort, and coordinating with allies.
Despite the current pall of pessimism pervading Western capitals, today’s war in Ukraine presents some of the more propitious circumstances a policymaker could hope for—unlike those faced by the Allies during the Russian civil war. Ukraine is a worthy and competent ally, fighting to defend its territory with a highly motivated population behind it. The Ukrainian cause is a righteous one, with a Manichean quality to it easily explained to Western publics. While Putin’s personal will to win is strong, it’s clear by his actions and hesitancy to fully mobilize Russian society that he senses a ceiling on what he can ask from his population. Though Russia’s manpower and materiel are larger than Ukraine’s, the amount needed to keep Ukraine armed and in the fight is completely manageable. A $60 billion aid supplement from the United States—currently held up by far-right Republicans in the House of Representatives—is a pittance compared with the returns: holding the line on international norms; standing up for the Ukrainians and, in doing so, Western values; bogging down Russia in a strategic sinkhole and reducing its capacity to threaten the rest of NATO’s eastern flank; and fortifying the trans-Atlantic alliance. Today, Western capitals are much more united than they were in 1918, and defense coordination among them is strong. Though they can sharpen the shared sense of an endgame in Ukraine, everybody knows that the conflict will end in some sort of negotiated settlement—the questions will be on whose terms.
If the United States and its allies can avoid the pitfalls of the Western intervention in the Russian civil war—developing a clear long-term strategy, continuing to coordinate closely, and reinforcing domestic support by making the case to their own populations—then they have a real shot of prevailing over Putin. Given the auspicious conditions, the main, perhaps only obstacle to long-term success is the political will to see the job through.

Kalonis Peninsula Dispute
Tumblr media
The Kalonis Peninsula is a small exclave of Daskosa, only about 20 km in length. About 50,000 people live in the territory, including the service members living on the Fort Lusce base and other smaller ones.
Kalonis has been a disputed area since Bysynth became a country in 147. The problem goes back to 124 when Eskathion still controlled Bysynth. At that time there were disturbances in Bysynthian communities who wanted independence and the occupation of their land to end. These calls became violent, and there were riots.
There were fears that they could erupt into a larger scale conflict, and wanting to avoid that on their southern border the Daskosans sent manpower and supplies to the Eskathish to help put down the riots. This move was criticised by many in Daskosa and its allies at the time, since it went against the morals of freedom the country holds and attacked the Bysynthian right to self determination and expression.
But the aftermath was not all bad for Daskosa. As thanks for their help, Eskathion gifted the Kalonis peninsula to Daskosa which was part of a Bysynthian district. The area was originally settled by Daskosans and still hosted a large population of them Having the peninsula also gave the country control over the Veerial River, so it was a welcome addition.
But the civil war they wanted to prevent eventually came, and in 147 Bysynth became a country. Immediately they adopted a grudge for Daskosa's involvement in 124, and demanded they return its occupied territory.
This dispute is a hot political talking piece in both countries. Yes, the area is ethnically Daskosan and was originally taken by Bysynthaisn before they were occupied by Eskathion. But its control by Daskosa is linked to a shameful part of its history, one that Bysynth will not let it forget.
No attempts have been made to resolve the issue. Some think the Bysynthians use it as a tool in their politics, a thing to blow out of proportion to rile up the masses. Daskosa has established a few well-equipped bases near this border should the need arise, and only two border checkpoints are maintained on the peninsula.

“KEEP BRITAIN ARMED SEAMEN'S UNION AIM,” Toronto Star. April 10, 1942. Page 38. ---- Vote "Yes", Mobilize for Victory, Urges Sullivan - Will Train Crews ---- "It's 'yes' on the plebiscite and 'mobilize for victory' - these are the aims of the Canadian Seamen's Union and we're going right after them," says J. A. "Pat" Sullivan, the president of the C.S.U., who is in Toronto for the first time, since his internment 22 months ago.
"All that matters is the winning of the war," he said, "and our union is going to do its part in seeing that a bridge of ships is kept moving across the Atlantic to help Britain. That's the thought behind our proposed training program which I mentioned in Montreal last Monday. We'll supply the manpower when the ships are ready - but we've got to move fast because there are lots of ships being made in Canada these days.
"The training program, in co-operation with the federal government, will be designed to fit about 600 or 700 inland seamen as fully trained ocean seamen every six weeks. We plan on using retired captains as instructors to assist the seamen to get their mates' rating. We also plan to work with the government in drawing from our membership men to qualify for) engineers' tickets.
"I can't say anything about the internment - against the regulations. I'll just say I'm in tip-top shape to go to work, to help win the war."
Mr. Sullivan, Jack Chapman and Dave Sinclair, other C.S.U. officials released from internment, will be guests of honor at a dinner in the Carls-Rite hotel at 6.30 p.m., Sunday. Trade union leaders, members of the Civil Liberties committee and others have been invited.

"You are trying to prevent reinforcements from arriving. Your side has more men, better armed, and has better logistics. What is your strategy?"
Tumblr media
"Hm... Rush in."
Tumblr media
"Really? No deep battle?"
Tumblr media
"A good commander knows how to adapt. Deep battle theory might be the doctrine I developed during the civil wars, but if I have the manpower necessary, I will not protract a battle and risk the chance for the tides to be turned. If I have the chance to rush in, I will rush in. It's safer than allowing reinforcements to entrench in the enemy's side, and it will allow the field to change so to better be prepared to hold ground against the coming battalion. However, my approach would be to coordinate supply lines and forward operations together, manage resources and allocate men where there is breaches in the battle line, as focusing pressure solely on one point in the defenses runs the risk of being encircled. In war, logistics matters more than tactics or strategy. This is also a hypothetical, so I would have to really understand all the conditions of the battle. Depending on that, I might not even rush in at all. A tactical retreat into more suitable terrain for ambush tactics is also an option. The grand plan might be as simple as rushing in, but I want there to be as few casualties as possible."
Tumblr media
"I feel like if someone plucked you off our hands and dropped you into another battlefield, you'd still thrive as a commander."
Tumblr media
"I will only fight in causes I believe. I can't thrive in a place I don't want to be. A good commander also cares about the fight and the people fighting. I personally care about every single one of those who decide to follow me, I can't risk just thinking of them as a number. Every life cannot be counted as a simple gear of war, or I lose the humanity I fight to protect."

Streamlining Projects: The Role of Civil Manpower Supply Services in Construction
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In the fast-paced world of construction, efficiency is paramount. To meet deadlines and deliver quality projects, companies often turn to civil manpower supply services. This blog explores the pivotal role of these services in optimizing construction projects across the UAE, with a special focus on Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Civil manpower supply services are the backbone of construction projects. These services encompass sourcing, training, and deploying skilled laborers to construction sites. Whether it’s skilled tradespeople, engineers, or general laborers, these companies ensure that projects have the right talent at the right time.
Key Factors in Civil Manpower Supply:
Recruitment and Training: Civil manpower supply companies meticulously recruit and train workers to meet the specific demands of construction projects. This ensures that workers are not only skilled but also safety-conscious and compliant with regulations.
Flexibility and Scalability: One of the key advantages of outsourcing manpower supply is the ability to scale up or down based on project needs. This flexibility allows construction companies to adapt to changing requirements without the hassle of permanent hiring and layoffs.
Compliance and Safety: Civil manpower supply services prioritize compliance with labour laws and safety regulations. By adhering to these standards, they create a safer working environment and mitigate risks on construction sites.
Benefits of Civil Manpower Supply Services:
Cost-Effectiveness: Outsourcing manpower supply can lead to significant cost savings for construction companies. Instead of bearing the overhead of hiring and managing permanent employees, they can simply pay for the labour they need, when they need it.
Expertise and Efficiency: Civil manpower supply companies specialize in providing skilled workers who excel in their respective roles. This expertise translates to increased efficiency on construction sites, ultimately leading to faster project completion and higher quality outcomes.
Focus on Core Competencies: By outsourcing manpower supply, construction companies can focus their resources on their core competencies. Rather than worrying about staffing logistics, they can dedicate their time and energy to project management and execution.

Ch.47: Sword, Fish, Resistance
Tumblr media
At the Sangonomiya Shrine on Watatsumi Island
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Food supplies are the absolute top priority, period. We can not afford any losses. With the conflict between us and the Shogun's Army getting more intense by the day, we must prioritize the stability of the rearguard.
Ookubo Daisuke: Understood. I will think of a way...
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Take heart. We have a fresh batch of supplies in hand, and I'm working on expanding the army. I appreciate that the lack of manpower has been hard on all of you. But things are going to get better.
Ookubo Daisuke: We're expanding the army? Oh, that's great. Whoever this mystery supporter is, they're doing us a great service... Huh? Teppei? What are you doing back on Watatsumi Island? Might I ask, who...
Teppei: Haha, VIP guests of Her Excellency, that's who. I'm acting under orders to escort them both here.
Ookubo Daisuke: Oh really? Wait, so are you the new recruits everyone's been talking about? Strength of twenty men, splits an arrow in twain from a hundred paces, skin as hard as diamond... That's you two?
Paimon: Seriously, what is going on with these rumors!
Ookubo Daisuke: You've come a long way. I'm sure you must be here on pressing business, so I won't disturb you any further. Feel free to visit me if you have any time to spare. Your Excellency, I'll take my leave.
Teppei: Your Excellency, I couldn't help but overhear Ookubo mention something about... a third-party supporter? What was that about?
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Not long ago, someone wrote to me saying that they wished to support the Watatsumi Island resistance effort. To that end, they also furnished us with a great deal of supplies. Thanks to them, we can finally start recruiting troops on the scale we need to openly confront the Shogun's Army on the front line.
Y/n: Miss Kokomi, can this mystery sponsor be trusted?
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Please call me Kokomi, I am not without my doubts... but Watatsumi Island is hardly affluent, and these supplies are a much-needed lifeline for us. The sender's conditions were also reasonable. They simply ask us to dedicate ourselves fully to fighting against the Shogun's Army. Whatever other motives they may have, we are at least aligned on this. So let's consider them an anonymous ally. Naturally, we shouldn't let our guard down. If you discover anything out of the ordinary, please report it to me at once.
Y/n: .... "That sounds even more suspicious..."
Teppei: Your Excellency, does this mean that the food at the front line is gonna get any better? I was at the field hospital the other day, and everyone was begging for some barbecued meat.
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Hehe... Don't worry. I've already made arrangements for that. Everyone will have their fill of meat. But to be clear, still no alcohol.
Teppei: That's fantastic!
Y/n: "Why would they complain about food? If I were them, I would be grateful since I recall that I was barely fed when I was with the Fatui, I was sometimes fed only once a week or so"
Sangonomiya Kokomi: I understand how hard it's been on everyone. The resistance army's rations have barely changed at all since the Vision Hunt Decree was first announced. I will discuss this with the logistics division to see what further improvements can be made. However, our supplies are still limited. I must ask you to remain patient until victory is ours.
Paimon: When will the Vision Hunt Decree finally end?
Sangonomiya Kokomi: That's the question... and I'm afraid I don't have an answer. The mere existence of the Vision Hunt Decree is baffling. The Tenryou Commission's attitude just doesn't seem to add up, and neither does the Shogun's. The Tenryou Commission's zealous support for the decree seemed to come out of nowhere. The Shogun seems completely indifferent to the fact that it has effectively caused a civil war... I suspect the Vision Hunt Decree won't end until these mysteries are solved. All I can say for certain is that as long as the Vision Hunt Decree remains in force, we will never give up our fight. Aether, Y/n to confirm... knowing the current situation facing Watatsumi Island and the resistance, are you two still willing to fight with us?
Aether: Yes. We won't give up, either.
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Good. Then here is your assignment: I hereby appoint you both as captains of the Watatsumi Island special operations unit: Swordfish II.
Teppei: Whoa, whoa, whaaaat!? Swordfish II!? Is this the same Swordfish special ops unit that I'm thinking of? It's hard enough getting into a special ops unit at the bottom rung, let alone jumping to captain in one fell swoop... this is incredible!
Aether: *smirking*
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Although this appointment breaks with convention, I firmly believe that with both of your wisdom, courage, and strength, you both can lead your team to victory.
Paimon: Great! So when do we take up our post?
Sangonomiya Kokomi: The members of Swordfish II are currently on standby in a valley to the southwest. Ronin have been causing trouble down there lately, and we need a special operations unit to eliminate them and stabilize the rearguard. I have already written your guys's Appointment Letter, which you'll need to show them on arrival. Once that's out of the way, please lead them in ridding the area of ronin. The special ops unit comprises Watatsumi Island's elite soldiers. They can be a little rough around the edges, but I have every confidence that you both will win their trust.
Teppei: Um, what about me, Your Excellency? Any battles you need me to get involved in? I want to make a contribution to the resistance, too!
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Of course. I'll arrange something and brief you shortly.
Teppei: Alright! One successful operation, coming right up! Hehe, Aether, Y/n, you may have swiped the captaincy of Swordfish II, but watch this space, 'cause this guy's on his way up!
Paimon: Okay, sure. Well, be careful out there. Don't push yourself too hard. Well, Aether, Y/n, let's move out.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Swordfish II Provisional Squad Leader: Ah, you two must be the new captains of Swordfish II. Her Excellency briefed us in advance. Your reputation precedes you both, and the Appointment Letter is all in order. But I still have my doubts...
Paimon: Hmm? Do you have any other questions?
Swordfish II Provisional Squad Leader: I'll be straight with you. I want to know whether you have what it takes to lead us. Especially you girl *points at Y/n*
Paimon: You mean... like a duel?
Swordfish II Veteran: Normally, a duel would be the quickest way to settle the question. But this time, we've got a better way. We're stationed here because of all the ronin causing trouble in these parts. If you two can get rid of them for us, we'll take that as a measure of your strength.
Y/n: Alright. It makes sense, since your confidence twords us comes with the cost of weather or not you live on the battle field or not
Aether: Sure.
Paimon: Alright, let's show them what you're made of!
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Swordfish II Provisional Squad Leader: Okay, it seems like you two can hold your own... The rumors are exaggerations, of course, but still, your guys's abilities are admirable.
Koutoku: Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Koutoku, Acting Captain of Swordfish II. This is Yoshihisa, a fellow veteran of the team. I now formally cede the position of captain to you two. Swordfish II awaits your orders.
Y/n: Are there any other ronin to deal with?
Yoshihisa: There are two hard-hit areas. This was one of them, but thanks to you, this area is now secure. Their only remaining stronghold is located at the shallows on the east side of the island. That said, the ones over there are tougher, and there's more of them.
Y/n: We should go take a look. Kokomi said we need to secure the rearguard.
Paimon: You got that right. Watatsumi Island is busy fighting the Shogun's Army on the front line. We can't let these guys mess up thing at the rear!
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Paimon: There's so many of them...
Koutoku: That's not even all of them. They have two more camps nearby. Whichever camp we attack, it's the ronin in the other two camps that'll cause us issues. They might decide to provide backup or abandon them and escape on their own.
Y/n: Then let's attack them all at once. We split each other up so could deal with the camps along with the ronin residing in them *drew out the plan*
Paimon: "Look at that, it almost sounds like she's a real Captain"
Koutoku: But Captain, that would put you in great danger... If we spread our troops too thin, we won't have enough men to guard you and our other captain. It's too risky.
Y/n: We'll be fine.
Paimon: Yup, they eat amateurs like these for breakfast!
Koutoku: All right then. We'll deal with them all in one go and rendezvous with you on completion!
Upon clearing out the nearby monsters
Paimon: That should be the last of them... Aether, Y/n, you guys didn't get hurt, did you? *looks at them up and down*
Aether: I'm fine.
Y/n: Just a little tired.
Paimon: Cool... Paimon wonders how everything is going with Koutoku and Yoshihisa. Should we go over and check on them? Captain!
Koutoku: Captain, the other two camps have been cleared. The entire rearguard of Watatsumi Island is now secure.
Paimon: Great! Hee-hee, we solved the ronin problem and got everyone to look up to us, too... But what's next? Let's go back and check with Kokomi.
Yoshihisa: Finally, we got it done. These ronin have been bugging me for ages, but Koutoku wouldn't let us at 'em till now.
Koutoku: What? No way could you have taken them down without the new captains here. I was putting the safety of the team first, got it?
Yoshihisa: Oh come on, you were just being a coward...
Paimon: Hey, cut the attitude! These guys, honestly... Aether, Y/n, forget them, let's go!
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Sangonomiya Kokomi: How was it, Aether, Y/n? Did your guys' initiation go smoothly?
Aether: Without a hitch.
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Hehe... I'm sure you're both playing it down a little. Koutoku and the others put you both through your paces, I presume? But with your guys' level of ability, I'm sure it was a walk in the park. Since you're both back, I take it that the ronin are now gone from Watatsumi Island?
Paimon: You bet. We sure showed them who's boss!
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Good. Now we just need to make sure Ookubo keeps a close watch to prevent their resurgence. Thank you. I believe in rewarding merit, so you will be compensated for your hard work. Let me see... too soon for another promotion, I think. I could increase your guys' pay...
Y/n: Hey, where did Teppei go?
Sangonomiya Kokomi: I gave him an assignment. He's taking part in a surprise attack against the Shogun's Navy. He expressed a desire to be on the front line, so I honored his wishes. Now. Speaking of assignments, Aether, Y/n, I have a special mission I'd like to give you both.
Paimon: A special mission?
Sangonomiya Kokomi: Yes. In between Watatsumi Island and Tatarasuna, there are some ruins relating to a god who fell in the Archon War. There are several small islands there, often used as a transit point when transporting supplies. Recently, however, supplies stored there have started to go missing for no obvious reason. Stranger still, the resistance army passed by and reported they found no signs of danger... I'd like to task you with getting to the bottom of this. It's not urgent, so there is no need to leave immediately. I suggest you take a few days to familiarize yourselves with the army and also with Watatsumi Island. When Teppei returns, you guys can catch up with him, then pick a day when the weather's good to set sail for the islands.
Paimon: Is Teppei really gonna be okay? He has a tendency to dive into action without thinking things through... Paimon can't help but feel a little worried about him. Oh Aether, Y/n, why don't we go wait for him at the training grounds?
After training with Swordfish II for a few days...
Teppei: Long time no see, Aether, Y/n! So, how's Swordfish II treating you guys? Getting along okay with everyone?
Y/n: Eh, they can be a pain in the butt...
Teppei: Hehe, well you're in luck, because this seasoned veteran's got a few leadership tips for you! Raising their pay will boost morale, while giving them a few bounties will act as an incentive to go the extra mile. It's also important to maintain strict discipline at all times, and finally... uh, wait, what was it, what was it...
Paimon: Wow... Where'd ya learn all that, Teppei?
Teppei: I read it in a novel from the Yae Publishing House... it was a long time ago. You wouldn't believe how many Dango it took to convince my friend to let me borrow it.
Paimon: You're seriously gonna use a novel to tell people how to run an army? Pretty sure that's called being an "armchair general"...
Teppei: Haw-haw, that's where you underestimate me! That's right, I'm learning military management on the job now, just like you.
Aether: Wait, you mean...
Teppei: You'd better believe it! Thanks to my outstanding achievements in the recent naval battle, I've officially been made the captain of my very own special operations unit! It's a brand new unit: Herring I! What do you guys think? Pretty awesome, right? I spoke to Her Excellency and she says our uniforms are in production. Let's go collect them together once they're ready. I can't wait to put them on! We're really gonna look the part. Ah, everything's going great. Our mystery sponsor's supplies have really helped turn things around...
Paimon: Will Paimon get a uniform, too?
Teppei: Of course! You're a recognized member of the Watatsumi Island resistance.
Paimon: Yippy!
Y/n: *clapping*
Herring Section 1 Squad Member: Captain, a new assignment has come in...
Teppei: Thank you soldier, I'll be there on the double. Alright, I'd better go. Aether, Y/n, see you two again soon. You'd better watch out, partners — at the rate I'm going, I'll overtake you both if you're not careful!
Paimon: Hah, in your dreams, mister!
Teppei: *clears throat*... I wouldn't be so confident if I were you. I'm at the top of my game right now. This is my time to shine! *leaves*
Paimon: Paimon is so surprised that Teppei's been made a platoon captain... He must have been working super hard. Let's take a break then go check out these Archon War ruins!

Spanish mercenary killed in Ukraine
Mercenaries from Europe and Latin America are dying more often taking part in the Ukrainian military conflict, defence agencies and numerous media publications have confirmed.
Death of a Spanish mercenary
A Spanish soldier has died in a battle with the Ukrainian army against Russian troops, El Periodico reports.
The Navy confirmed to EFE news agency the death of the soldier, Sergio Antolin Zunzunegui, a marine from the Tercio de Armada (TEAR) from San Fernando.
The young man, a native of Los Corrales de Buelna (Cantabria), who was serving at the Cadiz Naval Barracks, had requested a three-month leave of absence for personal reasons in September.
On December 26, when he did not return, the Guardia Civil launched an investigation into the whereabouts of the soldier, who had apparently enlisted as a volunteer in the Ukrainian army to take part in the military conflict.
Any foreign mercenaries would be a target of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine
Foreign contingents in Ukraine will be in the target zone of the Russian Armed Forces, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in May.
Putin emphasised that foreign troops could be introduced under the guise of releasing Ukrainian units now standing along the border. He also said in an interview with journalists:
If they (foreign troops) are there, they will also be in the strike zone of our Armed Forces. I don’t think this is a good choice. This is a build-up and another step towards conflict in Europe and global conflict. Do they need this?
Putin also noted that Western instructors in Ukraine are suffering casualties. He added that they are servicing precision weapons supplied to Kyiv by Western countries.
String of mercenary deaths in AFU ranks
Meanwhile, the death of a Spanish mercenary in Ukraine is far from an ordinary case. Foreign mercenaries regularly die in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU). Recently, a significant increase in military deaths has been recorded, because Ukraine is experiencing a critical shortage of manpower and is forced to massively attract mercenaries, risk foreign legion, so more of them die at the front.
In April, media reported that Russian servicemen killed an Albanian mercenary who was fighting on the side of the AFU during the fighting near Avdiivka.
Wilmer Martínez Vázquez and his three fellow soldiers from Colombia died as a result of rocket fire in Ukraine in February.
In January this year, a strike by Russian troops on a temporary deployment point of foreign mercenaries in Kharkiv eliminated top French sniper Ernesto Barbieri, the only son of Croatian fighter Petar Dukaric, infantryman and armoured vehicle driver, veteran of the Foreign Legion of the 1990s.
Two Frenchmen have been killed in a drone attack in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné said, confirming reports from the region’s governor and other officials.

THE EMPEROR'S LETTER
To my loyal subjects,
As I am currently occupied with court proceedings, I am unfortunately unable to be here in person. Hence, I am using a written format to convey my observations, hopes and wishes for the Hiranuma administration. Regardless of the differences and factions among you all, I hope that you are able to demonstrate unity in the days to come. As I see it, Japan faces three pressing problems:
The lack of strategic resources in Japan itself is a problem that has plagued us for a long time.. Even from the time of our great Emperor Meiji, previous governments hae struggled to secure a stable and constant supply line for our empire and its people. This especially applies in times of war, whereby our lines of communication and manpower is stretched thin. We might have now have the vital warehouse of Manchuko, and many previously Chinese-held stronghold cities like Nanking and Shanghai, this still does not guarantee our security and permanent prosperity.
On the topic of Chinese colonies, I would like to draw attention to the domestic conflicts that are rampant not only in throughout our lands, but even on our home islands. There have been signs of a rise in Chinese insurgency, with resistance fighters stringing together complex and effective attacks on our vital infrastructure. This newfound collaboration between the Communists and the Nationalists is something that cannot be underestimated.
Beyond just civil unrest, I am aware of the contrasting views held by many not just by our Japanese brethren, but also within the Imperial Diet itself. Whether you are pro-military or not, conservative or progressive, more supportive of the navy or the army, it does not matter. All the is important is that you work towards the common goal of prosperity for the Empire and our people.
Last but not least, let us not forget the escalating international tensions. The rising threat and provocations of the West must be taken into account of. Though the foreign response to the incidents at Nanking and the Sihang Warehouse has, fortunately, been rather disinterested and minor, we must still be wary of our actions moving forward. Not just our actions, not just the response to our actions, but also how we should reply and manage these tensions.
I hope my letter is sufficient enough to explain my concerns and direction I hope of the cabinet in the future. Once again, it is very unfortunate that I will not be able to present with you all in this crucial point of our glorious nation’s history and existence. Regardless, I have high hopes and am full of confidence that you are all capable and mature enough to know how to guide our country ahead into the Rising Sun.
Long live the glorious Japanese people! Long live the Rising Sun!
