Okay, I genuinely don’t understand why people Snapeify Lan Qiren. “He hates Wei Wuxian because he hated Cangse-sanren.” Do we have a single shred of canonical evidence for that? Yes, they did know each other at least a little bit (Cangse-sanren shaved his goatee because he almost killed WCZ and JFM), but that wasn’t even revealed in the novel. It’s just something MXTX said later. Lan Qiren probably disliked Wei Wuxian during the Cloud Recesses study arc because he tormented his nephew, broke a million rules, had zero sense of decorum, and then punched another student. And then he disliked him later because he killed so many people! That’s what we actually know from the novel. There is no reason to think he dislikes WWX because he disliked CSSR.

A thought I had, (this isn't a fully thought out meta, just an impression of sorts.)

Something about Wei Wuxian's inherited vengeance.

Where did Wei Wuxian get that vengeance from? Mild-mannered Jiang Fengmian? Benevolent and kind Jiang Yanli? Cangse Sanren, who Wei Wuxian remembers saying something along the lines of remember the good things people do for you not the bad? Wei Changze?

The child of Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze would've likely done something along the lines of protecting the common people and fighting for justice during the Sunshot campaign, but did Wei Wuxian do that?

No, I tell you truly, Wei Wuxian is also the child of Yu Ziyuan. Did they have anything resembling a healthy relationship? No. But the child of Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze wouldn't slaughter thousands in unholy vengeance. Wouldn't extract oceans of blood for every drop stolen.

But the child of Yu Ziyuan would.

That isn't to say, he's only the child of Yu Ziyuan, no, we see glimpses of the influences of his other parental figures throughout the story.

Look at how he doesn't flinch from leaving the proverbial (paradise) mountain to save the wen remnants (CSSR), look at his compassion for the common people (Jiang Yanli); His sense of loyalty (Wei Changze), level headedness (Jiang Fengmian).

Something about how conscious he is of debt. Does that stem from his inherent preference of righteous action? His desire to do right? Yes. But I wouldn't discount his awareness of debt also coming from a quasi-maternal figure like Yu Ziyuan. Now there is a woman aware of debt, what she owes and what is owed to her.

Everyone is shaped by the adult figures in their life, and we inherit many things from them, such as traumas, perspectives and traits.

I posit Wei Wuxian is no different. But, just like Wei Wuxian, we aren't defined by our parental figures.

On transandrophobia and the concept of co-substantiality

I refrained from talking on this topic as it's not a debate in my french leftist circles but seeing how it's prevalent here on tumblr, I think it's a good opportunity to talk about some concepts.

First of all, on a linguistic note, people people create words to suit their needs. The etymology doesn't matter : if transandrophobia is created to description "the specific oppression that trans men suffer", it does not imply that mysandry exists. It's an opression specific to an identity.

This bring me to a critique of some interpretation of intersectionalty. That it would only be intersection of oppressions. As you can't be oppress as a man, there is no intersection between being a man and being trans (so no need to use a different word than general transphobia).

This interpretation is honestly baffling. I'll take an example that I think everybody will agree on : Black men are more often arrested by police (or killed, or put in prison...) than white people because of the racial integral state. But also more than black women, why is that, how can we explain that this police brutality is more harsh on black men ? The same reason as the stereotypes saying that black men are more violent, criminal... This is a specific oppression for black men (who may choose to create a word to describe it).

This is not to say that black men are more opressed than black women. There are differences on the kind of racism that they suffer. Intersectionality is not the addition of oppression, it is used to describe specific interactions of class, race and gender and the social relations associated with them. (even if in general men oppress women, everything depend on the social relations)

(If you'd like to delve deeper into the subject, I suggest you read up theories on subaltern masculinities.)

There are still a lot of critics of intersectionality to do. As a materialist, I prefer the notion of co-substantiality of the social relations (CSSR) (coined by Danièle Kergoat, french sociologist).

A social relation is a antagonistic relation between two social groups around an issue. it's a relation of material and ideal production.

Social relations are co-substantial : they form a knot that cannot be cut at the level of social practices (except from an analytical sociology perspective) and they are co-extensif : when deployed, the social relations of class, gender and race reproduce and co-produce with each other.

CSSR doesn't naturalized the categories for example : "workers and woman" are part of gender and class relations. Sometimes in the struggle, they can form a collectif subject, original in its practices, but a subject always in process and not reductible to that category.

This is the main issue with intersectionality "mapping the margins" this means fixing the categories, naturalizing them. This concept struggles to reflect a shifting and historical relation of domination.

Multiplicity of categories hide the social relations. But we cannot separate social categories and social relations where they were made. Working with those categories is risking to leave blind spot. Spots that can be the strongest aspects of domination, just as they can be bearers of resistance.

Co-substantiality is the complex dynamic interweaving of all social relations; each leaving its mark on the others, modulating each other, building each other up in a reciprocal way; the fact that they form a system does not exclude contradictions between them.

Refusing to reason in terms of fixed entities allows us to put the political subject (and not just the victims of domination) back at the center of analysis, taking into account all its ambivalent and often ambiguous practices.

thinking about wcz seeming the "calmer/less reactive" parent (and he usually is) so wwx typically confided in his dad more... until wwx tells his dad "offhandedly" about his cool new friend in school who's really smart and funny and "perfect-looking, honestly" for over an hour, to which, wcz just "hmm"s and "ahh"s and "i see"s from where he's "tinkering w a talisman" (but has actually ruined the paper with huge blobs of ink).

wwx retires to his room with a, "we're gonna be best friends, i can tell!" and wcz chokes out a, "uh-huh, that's nice, a-ying."

and the moment the door closes, wcz dashes out of the study to where cssr is rush-ironing out their formal robes for the conference tomorrow (like he knew she would even though he'd reminded her about it everyday for the past 2 weeks) and blurts out in a panic, "A-YING IS IN LOVE!"

CSSR: He is? Really? And he told you that?? WCZ: Well, no, not exactly, he claims to wanna be this boy's best friend, but- CSSR: so why are you freaking out about this? it's just a friend- WCZ: No, you don't understand, he's your son, he had that look and- CSSR: Hey, what's that supposed to mean?! WCZ: He talked about the boy's 'perfect hair' for 15 mins and every other way he's perfect for the rest of the hour. CSSR: Oh. Huh. He is my son then. Who's the boy? Did he say? Maybe we can look him up! WCZ: No, he didn't, but that's not the point! A-Ying, our baby!!! Is in love!!!?!?!! CSR: And? WCZ: And!! He'll want to marry the boy!!! And move out!!! And never wanna see us again!!!! 😭 CSSR: Hold your horses there, buddy. If they do get married, which I imagine isn't going to be any time soon, I will demand visits, especially with the grandchildren- WCZ: Grandchildren!?!??!?! Nooo, not my baby!!! He's still too young for such things! CSSR: Our boy is almost 20, baba. WCZ: Yes, but he's our boy 🥺 CSSR: And he always will be, but remember, we weren't that much older when we made him- WCZ: Cangse...! CSSR pats WCZ's hand where it lay on her bare stomach. "There, another one cooking."

WCZ snorts. "Your period starts in two days, love, I highly doubt it."

"Spoilsport." CSSR blows a raspberry at him, then sighs with a smug smile. "Wait 'til I tell Qiren about this! We may not be Lans, but we Weis do fall pretty hard, you know." She boops his nose.

WCZ smiles. "That we do."

International Correspondence and Stuff

Over the past few months, my travels around the radio dial have introduced me to many different international broadcasters and their podcasts.

When I’m out on the road, most of my listening is made up of podcasts from the English sections of stations such as Radio Prague International, Radio Si (Slovenia), Radio Slovakia International, Radio Ukraine International, Bulgarian National Radio and Radio Romania International.

A few months ago I wrote to all of my favourite stations, and, included in the envelope was a postcard from here in Worthing.

I didn’t expect to get anything back, the letters were sent as a recognition and appreciation of the work and effort put in by the respective teams. Well, Radio Prague sent me a nice little envelope with a bookmark and some other Czech Republic/Radio Prague related bits. I also got a mention on Radio Slovakia International during the Listener’s Tribune.

Also recently, I bought some other radio related bits and pieces from eBay, for radio corner – some retro QSL cards from Radio Moscow, Radio Poland and Radio Kyiv, as well as some Radio Praha CSSR pin badges.

Radio corner now looks something like this, with posters from Radio Berlin International, Radio Sofia and Radio Praha, complete with a Radio Poland Jedynka Salamander and a DDR Strela Konkret RR 1401.

Earlier on in the year, back in July, I was excited to win the monthly “Once there was a castle” competition on Radio Slovakia International. My prize? A fantastic painting of the Červený kláštor monastery.

Meanwhile, more recently, having found somewhere that actually still sells cassette tapes, I’ve started going full radio nerd and have been recording radio stations for nostalgia. The collection of tapes is growing.

Even though Cangse Sanren was able to call her with the bell, it was too late. Finding her dead body covered in blood, Li Yue burst into tears, hugging her beloved shimei.

Before leaving the heavenly mountain, Li Yue, the first disciple of the heavenly fox, Baoshan Sanren, gave to Xinyue a bell. "If you ever need me, just stir the bell. It doesn't matter where you're, I'll go find you,"

Xinyue laughed "Now I have six tails, Shijie! I will be fine, but do not blame me if I call you just to bother you" Li Yue looked at his shimei with an soft smile and her heart beating fast.

Her feelings overflowed, but never told them out loud. Xinyue, now known as Cangse Sanren, called her to tell her about the man she fell in love, when she married according to the foxes traditions, when she became pregnant and when she had her baby.

The bell broke and Cangse Sanren waited. It only needed a couple of minutes to arrive and Li Yue was always happy to see her Shimei and her family. Seeing her happy relieved her heart. Li Yue always went to her on each occasion, giving her a new bell every time the previous one broke

The last time Cangse Sanren used the bell, Li Yue hoped to see her shimei's smile, the husband's voice and her little nephew's laugh. What she saw, on the other hand, was a massacre. Bodies scattered throughout the forest and a strong smell of blood.

Li Yue saw Cangse Sanren lying on a tree with a hole in her stomach. Her husband was a few meters away, without moving, also covered with blood. She was frozen, thinking that it should be a nightmare. Cangse Sanren's hand fell and a golden bell rolled away and broke into thousands of pieces.

Yue hugged her Shimei and cried, cried and swore to take revenge. She knew the name of the clan who did this, probably in looking for fox tails. She wanted to go there and freeze everything. Her eyer glowing in a icy blue. It was only a sob that make her stop.

Within Cangse Sanren's tails, there was her baby, Wei Ying, snuggled against himself, with his eyes strongly closed and accelerated breathing. Yue took it in my arms and cried. The little kit was burning in a fever. Cssr had probably not called her to ask for help but for her kit.

Forgetting her revenge for a moment, Yue took the baby with her, promising in silence that she would protect him with her life.
