So @midnight-mod developed some rules for fishing in D&D 5e and we ran them through a playtest adventure to see how they fared.  All in all, I think they are very good and a lot of fun if you want to making fishing a more central part of an adventure or just want to add a little more flavor to rolling on your Survival checks to see if you can find food to subsist on.
I won’t steal Midnight’s thunder and go into great detail on how the fishing rules work, but here are the main concepts:
You can use the fishing tackle as listed in the PHB for simple bait fishing, but you can also gain proficiency with more advanced fishing tackle, allowing you to use angler’s tackle, fly fishing tackle, and even a legendary version of either
There are five tiers of fish, from puny to legendarily massive.  You need better equipment and higher ability checks to land the big ones.
To catch a fish, you first roll a Nature or Deception check to hook the fish.  If that’s successful, roll a fishing tackle check with Str modifier to pull it ashore.  If you fail that, you must roll another fishing tackle check with your Con modifier to outlast it.
The bigger the fish, the more food it provides and the more money you can sell it for
Some backgrounds either start with angler’s tackle proficiency (such as the Fisher background, naturally) or have the option of selecting it
For this adventure, the party consisted of:
Caelynn, played by Midnight, female wood elf ranger, fisher background.  A cheerful ball of energy and sunshine.  Raised by a family of enthusiastic anglers.
Liona, played by me, female half-elf warlock, criminal background.  Figurative fish out of water this session.  Last time she went fishing was on a camping trip as a child.  Basically the non-proficient control for this experiment.  Has a pet black cat named Emmy.
The adventure centers around a fishing tournament held in the town of Brightshore, which attracted several out-of-towners as well as locals who treat the event as just an excuse to enjoy good food and drink and go fishing.  There’s the grand prize of 50 gp for whoever can catch the largest fish in either the saltwater or freshwater category at the end of the three-day tournament, but there’s also a special prize for the first angler who can catch nine different fish from a particular list.  This special prize is really nothing more than a gaudy lantern in the shape of a cat and with a minor enchantment on it.  Liona is pretty ambivalent about fishing to begin with, but the moment she lays eyes on this lantern she is determined to win the tournament, much to Caelynn’s delight.
The evening before the first day of the tournament is spent locating the local fishing supply store and chatting up the locals.  Caelynn uses her fishing tale background feature to befriend Imie, the store owner, which works almost immediately because fishing stories are much appreciated in a town full of fishermen.  As a result, Caelynn gets a slight discount on a couple of specialty lures for two of the fish on their list, which grants advantage on fishing tackle checks to catch that particular fish.  The party will need all the help they can get, because their competition includes Moru, a triton, and Avela, a mermaid, both equipped with tridents, harpoons, and determination.
The first day of the tournament starts before the sun even rises, though it takes a couple of tries to get cityslicker Liona out of bed this early.  Their list of fish to win the special prize involves catching three different species of fish from three different locations around Brightshore: the beach at the bottom of the short bluff the town is built on, Misty Lake located a short ways inland, and out in the Lyhali Sea, which they’ll need to hire a boat for.
The party opts first to try the beach, and quickly catch all three fish on their list for this location as well as a few others.  They quickly head back into town just as the sun is rising and register their catches, only to learn that Moru just dropped off three of her fish about ten minutes earlier.  Caelynn sells her fish to Imie and buys herself a fly fishing tackle, hoping to make good use of it at Misty Lake.
True to its name, a light fog hung over Misty Lake in the early morning.  Caelynn and Liona were able to catch two of the three fish species here with little trouble, though Liona rolled a natural 1 on one cast, triggering a random event where she accidentally hooked Avela’s harness.  That got Liona’s lure thrown right back at her, thankfully bouncing off of her leather armor.
Caelynn managed to hook a giant freshwater stingray, the last fish to catch at this location, but it tagged her pretty good in the leg as she was pulling it out of the water.  Thankfully she resisted the effects of the poison, and immediately headed back to town, heedless of the deep puncture wound in her leg and Liona trying to tell her to get it bandaged up.  Once they are back in town and get their fish recorded, they learn that Moru was still a step ahead of them.  Not wanting to waste a single second, Caelynn ran down to the docks to hire a boat, leaving a small trail of blood across the town square.
They quickly located the boat Imie recommended to them last night, the Sea Cog.  It’s piloted by G. Guma, a salty warforged covered in brass plating and sounding like an angry, gruff Frenchman with none of the elegance the language is known for.  2 gp later, the three of them are heading out to the Lyhali Sea.  Caelynn shares another fishing tale with Guma, which prompts him to go off on a ranting tale about when he killed some kind of sea monster during the Pirate Wars.  Even though he seems to get increasingly agitated, Caelynn recognizes his ranting as part of the usual exchange of tall tales between sailors and fishermen.  At least she’s sitting still long enough for Liona to bandage up her leg.
Soon they are in a prime fishing spot, and the two catch some magnificent specimens, including a massive Lyhali marlin which no doubt will win them the prize for the largest saltwater fish.  With all nine of the fish on their list caught, it’s time to head back to town.
On the way back, however, they spot another boat at a complete stop.  A couple of high Perception rolls reveal that someone is standing on the boat and seems to be fighting off something.  When they draw closer for a better look, they realize that it’s Moru, her boat trapped in a large patch of sargassum and monsters made of seaweed trying to climb aboard to get at her.
At this point, Caelynn and Liona no longer care about winning the tournament, unwilling to leave even their rival to a terrible fate.  G. Guma is in full agreement, aiming his boat at the sargassum patch and gunning the engines.
The party land a few shots on the monster as they close in, and as the boat comes to a sudden stop when it catches in the seaweed, Caelynn uses the momentum to launch herself at the beast, twin shortswords in hand.  The monster has no choice but to fight her as Liona and Guma provide supporting fire.  Unfortunately, despite Caelynn landing some solid hits on the monster, it manages to strike some powerful blows of its own, finally knocking her unconscious.  As Caelynn’s vision fades to black, Moru rolls high on her attack roll, and throws her trident right into the creature’s head.
Caelynn eventually comes to, safe aboard the Sea Cog.  The monster is dead, everyone survived, and they found some useful salvage in an older boat tangled up in the seaweed.  They all decide to head back to town, seeing that they’ve had enough excitement for one day.  The sun sinks low over the horizon by the time they get back and get their fish registered.  Caelynn and Liona succeeded in catching all nine fish, but Moru only caught eight before that run-in with the seaweed monster, thus leaving our elven heroes the winners of the tournament’s special prize and in a good spot to win the largest saltwater fish.
But it’s only the end of the first day of the fishing tournament.  Who knows what else will happen to our heroes on day two?

Caelynn Meliamne
More character pictures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet Caelynn Meliamne! A Wood Elf native of the Galloes Kingdoms north of the Tiberim Republic, Caelynn joined the Tiberian Legions as an Auxiliary, looking for fame and fortune.
However, for reasons unbeknownst to the Legion's scouts, the 13th Legion turned east from Cirta towards Calama, seat of the Delmirev family and a provincial capital of the Kassimid Sultanate, the Tiberim's rivals in the Mare Nostrum. Having turned from their official objective, the Legion was ambushed by undead and destroyed. Now Caelynn joins with Amber, Kathra and Bethrynna to discover the truth behind the slaughter and bring those responsible to justice.
You can read more about Caelynn's adventures here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30291327/chapters/74659347

Gimme 20!
what would she be addicted to?Well in our campaign we have a furry addicted to shrooms. A weasley addicted to revenge, a tiefling addicted to tiddy, a gremlin addicted to.. eating garbage?? Being a public nuisance. And a red will smith addicted to arson and having sex with inanimate objects, and a turtle addicted to eating fucking children
…I’d say she’s good. Maybe violent tendencies and being an asshole but no real addictions

Since it’s her birthday, I decided to redesign a DnD character. She was originally based on 17 ships/pairings (props to you if you can guess what ones) and had 102 colors in her pallet asdfghjkl. I think she looks better now. First design was was a little less than a year ago, wow. Her name is pronounced Jay-ruh.
You can find more information about her and the original reference below the cut.
Name: Jearrha Galanodel (Moonwhisper)
Child Name: Phann (Fawn)
Class: Fighter/Ranger
Race: Elf
Subrace: Wood Elf (Eladrin)
Gender: cis female
Sexuality: bisexual but more into girls
Age: 127
Height: 5’ 5”
Weight: 113 lbs
Personality: Amused, curious, focused, doesn’t-appreciate-insults, skilled-with-sword-and-bow, soft-with-children-and-animals
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Talents: sketching, singing, sewing
City: Khorvaire (closer to other nations and not stuck in the past), an TBD city that exists in a twilight realm
Family:
Father (Aramil), is a woodcarver, 481
Mother (Leshanna), takes care of woodland creatures, 364
Grandmum (Althaea) Foxfeather, seamstress, father’s side, 764
Aunt Caelynn (Liadon (Silverfrond)), father’s side, 404
Uncle Erdan, father’s side, 555
Uncle Himo, married to Caelynn, 458

Aunt Shava, mother’s side, 425
Rael (cousin), sung duet with Jea, Caelynn’s daughter, 95
Beiro (cousin), son of Erdan, 263
Peren (cousin), son of Erdan, 4
Important Events:
Very close to Rael and Grandmum Foxfeather, many memories together
Rael left at 87, saying that “We are not immortal. We have no idea when we will die, and I’d like to see the world beyond TBD-city while I still can.”, Jearrha thought she was crazy, Rael gave her a bracelet
Grandmum got sick, never thought of among their family. Jearrha never knew her grandma on her mom’s side and never thought deeper into it. Grandmum has a short speech with Jearrha (still have to think of) about seeing the world and jumping for opportunities. Jearrha cries as she hands her a fox necklace, then Grandmum dies. Jearrha also keeps a feather from her hair.
Been travelling for a few months
Reason for Leaving: wants to adventure and learn

I am obsessed with my wood elf ranger/Druid Caelynn, a fisherwoman from a rural lake town and devotee of its local nature spirit, she’s got a thick southern accent, an adopted half-bugbear daughter, a giant otter companion, and literally never takes off her fishing waders. She’s out adventuring you earn gold to aid her hometown, which is being devastated by an environmental disaster that’s causing all the fish to mutate into horrible monsters. Women love her and fish fear her
dude i love that so much, caelynn has my heart

And the next character art is done! Willow, the half-dryad ranger. I really love her hair and how it came out. She’s on the same team as Nyx, Caelynn, and Kuori. Now, on to the last party member.

Blubber Blackberry (for Caelynn)
The Wood Elf stares at the blackish potion. She had been low on gold recently, and buying healing potions was off the table. Luckily she found a substitute instead. Details being nonexistence about it besides it being able to heal. Come to a few moments ago, where she got into a scrap with a bear. She was able to fight off the bear but getting scratched up in return.
Caelynn chugs down the potion, needing to heal the minor wounds. However, while she did feel better. The ranger felt, heavier? Fatter even? Caelynn looks down to see her leather armor getting pushed out via her fattening gut.
“Am getting bigger?” Caelynn softly exclaims, trying not to attract attention to herself. “Cursed health potion.”
As Caelynn swells up and rounds out. She finds her booty was beginning to rival her stomach in size. As her armor begins to rip a bit due to her increasing size. Soon enough, she finds herself at around 250-300 pounds. Caelynn tries to reach her bow and or arrows, but her bigger size made it impossible. She sighs as she sits down, hoping for the potion’s effects to die out.

Descendant characters and their ancestors:
Bryn – Ragna Llwyd. Bryn’s adoptive daughter, who remembers the days before the calamity devastated Hyrule. A flame dragon who prefers to travel in Hylian guise so as to avoid the attention of large monsters like Lynels and Gleeoks. Cavalier Fighter.
Caelynn – Draeli Faenorin. Never had a permanent residence after the Faenorins lost all to the Calamity. Lost his ancestor Bethrynna to the Calamity as well. Thief Rogue, having been trained in the Shiekah arts, and seeks to restore Hyrule and line his pockets at the same time if he can.
Connie – Paige Michaels. Raised in a large house in Gerudo. A blood descendant of Connie Michaels, who married Nawra Qadir of the Gerudo. Cavalier Fighter. Younger sister of Pirra, though they are not blood-related.
Cyrus – Dian. Obsidian Goron. An extremely rare Goron archer. Often crafts his basic arrowheads by chipping stone off his own back. Drakewarden Ranger. His dragon is a flame named Sable.
Gateni – Sareni Yaledrin. Gateni’s only child with Saryfel. Draconic bloodline Sorcerer. Raised largely by Saryfel in his draconic lair, so Sareni is used to money but not necessarily people, even though she’s read more than a few books and stories. Half sky dragon.
Hubert – Collette Langlois. Raised in the Langlois family home, a large house built to withstand the unpredictable weather of Faron. Descendant of Hubert Langlois. A Celestial Warlock who recently unlocked the ancient power of a Langlois ancestor before Hubert.
Ki – Tuun. Ki’s son. Grew up hearing his parent’s stories of their squadmate, the Hylian Champion, and sought to become like Link even despite the elder Zoras saying he and the Hylians in general brought ruin and death. Champion Fighter.
Leonard – Joan Brighid. Raised by both parents in a village in the wilderness, poor lifestyle after the Brighids lost everything to the Calamity. Became a Ranger to navigate the wilds and protect her village, and chose to be a Gloom Stalker after the chasms opened up the Depths to the world.
Nawra – Pirra Michaels. Raised in a large house in Gerudo. A descendant of an apprentice that Nawra saw immense potential in and took in so as to pass on her knowledge. Chronurgy Wizard. Elder sister of Paige, though they are not blood-related.
Reyes – Cecilia Liuvigild. Grew up in a large house belonging to the Liuvigild family in Faron. Descended from Reyes and Delphine. Something of a do-nothing, but she’s very good at magic when she wants to be. Storm Sorcerer.
Thorn – Lita Arcuna II. Paladin of Farore. Raised in a mansion in Gerudo, modest lifestyle. Chose to change from a Champion Fighter to a Vengeance Paladin to banish the gathering darkness in Hyrule.
Vair – Ernst and Eruca Bhelthir. Ernst: Raised in a small house in Hateno village, home to the Bhelthir-Dinrels. Grew up learning the shadow arts from his father Fennec, and magic from his grandmother Noel. Assassin Rogue with the magic initiate feat. Eruca: Raised in a small house in Hateno village, home to the Bhelthir-Dinrels. Trained by her father, Fennec, and grandmother, Noel. An Artillerist Artificer with a deep-seated love of ancient technology and fiddling with it. Her latest invention is downright crazy– like a crossbow, but it fires light.
Wynne – Owyn Mulrennan. Raised in a small house north of Hateno, not far from the old Madorna manor. A Knowledge Cleric who took up the holy cause after being led to the spring of wisdom and seeing Lady Naydra freed of Malice, who has taken on himself to restore the Mulrennan library.
Characters with no descendants:
Armok, Isaac, Raven*, Rex, Rod, Sandalio, Taunch *Raven is here because Link (at least, my Link) is an only child. You could count Link as a descendant because he is around for BotW and TotK, but... shrug

Research Rules: Libraries
There have been a couple of times during the campaign where the party needed to conduct some research in order to better understand the threats they are facing or uncover information about something or other.  In order to make this more engaging, I use the following rules:
Each character has mental stamina equal to half their Intelligence score, rounded down.  This represents how long they can hit the books before their brains start to fry from staring at miles of dry text for hours.
Making an Investigation, Arcana, Nature, or Religion check or assisting a character with a check consumes 1 mental stamina point.
Once a character is out of mental stamina, if they want to keep making checks they need to make a Constitution saving throw with a DC equal to 10 + the number of subsequent checks made after running out of stamina.  If they fail the saving throw, they gain a level of exhaustion.  You can’t die merely from researching too much, you’ll just pass out unless you have levels of exhaustion from other sources, such as not eating or sleeping.
Some types of information require the use of specific skills, such as Arcana, Nature, and Religion.  Investigation provides more general bits of information that can help determine further lines of investigation.
Each check usually equals 1-2 hours of research time.
As for the information gained, I generally ask the players what kind of information they are hoping to find and base the DCs on that, anywhere from 10, 15, or even 18 or 20 depending on how obscure, hidden, restricted, or specialized the information is (i.e., basic information on magic would be pretty easy to come by in a wizards’ academy, but higher in the personal library of a nonspellcaster noble with a very broad range of interests).  I typically have a list of likely bits of information the party is likely going to look up and help move the plot along.  If the party fails their check, I also have a separate list of random pieces of information not useful to the investigation at hand but usually help with campaign set dressing, like a factoid about an ancient ruler or an author’s speculation about current or historical events.  Sometimes there might be information that could be useful to the party, such as a spell, rumored location of a treasure, or dirt on that one annoying NPC that’s been a thorn in their side.
I’m pretty open to my players asking if they can use other skills and proficiencies in their research, but they need to sell me on it.  A recent example was when the party was looking up information about an island and all of the strange and terrifying things going on there.  Caelynn, a wood elf ranger/druid who had plenty of experience up to this point dealing with spirits and fae creatures, asked if she could leverage that experience into researching anything about the spirits that inhabited the island.  However, she didn’t have the Religion proficiency and just an Intelligence score of 10.  I ruled that by using her experience and intuitive spiritual understanding, she could make a straight Wisdom check without her proficiency bonus, but with a 1d6 inspiration die instead.
I also have a variation on this for conducting research in a library that’s just a pile of books on the floor (as is the case with Sir Daichi’s library, the party’s warrior and scholar), but I’ll save that for another day.  I’m also perfecting a separate set of rules for research and development, but that’s another topic entirely.

Male Elf Ranger
145 years old
Hes the middle child of 5 kids
Bisexual babe
He has a pet dog named Cooper and a pet Manta Ray named Shep
Hes a hunter tho he prefers not to eat meat
Lowkey vain. Hes OBSESSED with making sure his hair is always on point
He loves s*x. First game I played with him he slept with a halfling dominatrix and the next morning came downstairs with scars all over his body and a resistance to Slashing damage.
He is slow to actually befriend people because he will usually outlive most people he meets that arent elves
Hes socially awkward. He doesnt know how to talk to people properly unless hes had some alcohol
He likes to use a bow and arrow and shoot people from a distance rather than be in the thick of things (especially since blood is terrible for the hair)
If he gets to know someone and befriends them, that person becomes his "special person" who he loves and adores and will protecc at all costs
Caelynn
Female Half Elf Ranger
Her father was an Aquatic Elf, her mother was part of a ships crew
Shes an only child and grew up on a pirate ship surrounded by pirates
28 years old
Highkey loves to fight. Usually nights at the inn/tavern end up in a brawl.
She swears and cusses out everyone and anything. Like... she swears A LOT
She has a Pseudodragon named Zevon as her companion. She adores him and will fight anyone who threatens him
Shes actually hella sweet and loyal to people she trusts tho.
She has a paramour in one of the coastal towns she visited. She nearly left being a pirate to be with him but the call of the sea was too strong so now she just visits him
I'll probably add more to them later tbh
