I gave up on British news for a couple of weeks because it was endless Phillip Somebody and Holly Somebody-Else and some breakfast TV show I've never heard of, but now I have to step up with the other news and make my happy fully-on-the-spectrum twinkly LGBTQ+ views clear. I fully understand if no-one wants to like this post out of fear of death threats from the vociferous crotchdangle supporter community.

I'm quite masculine but definitely a biological female - and I have the undercarriage scars from pushing out a 10 lb 12 oz baby to prove it. I just don't want to walk into a womens' changing room and see male crotchdangle swinging around.

Transwomen without crotchdangle are fine, I don't find them in any way threatening. Gay men with crotchdangle are equally fine, and they've always treated me as an equal. Genuine gender dysphoria needs to be respected and to have a sympathetic medical approach from properly qualified doctors. I arrived back from Japan. I immediately went on guard, but I felt a lot less willing to conform to everyone else's expectations of me. I started living with my dad as my mother really didn't have the space and my dad had a full 3-bedroom house all to himself. When I got back, I started looking for other jobs, temporarily dropped out of college, and started experiencing some really severe reverse culture shock. I got my first, albeit temporary, job at a local bakery factory(think Little Debbie). That position ended pretty quickly because it was born out of Hostess' failure, but the sell of many of Hostess' brands removed the demand for some of the brands that this place manufactured. I then got a job at a major bank in the Southeast where, after a month or two, I divulged to a couple of my coworkers that I would be much more comfortable coming to work in dresses and skirts than I was coming to work wearing whatever it was that I had been wearing. That was the first time that I had vocally divulged that truth about myself. I had hinted to it in the past by joking about it with previous supervisors, but they had never encouraged it and I never made a serious move in that direction.

Outside of work, I started dressing in "women's clothing" full time, but would wear "women's" pants instead of skirts and dresses. My dad seemed to ignore it, and most people around me either ignored it or didn't notice. It was around this time that I started tucking...a term that makes me feel very uncomfortable everytime that I type it or say it.

After about 9 months, SunTrust let me go, unofficially. I bounce around a bit having two jobs for very short timespans after that, leaving each as better opportunities came along. I eventually landed a job at a gas station half way between the town I grew up in and the closest place that I could go and still have a decent support system in place. Fortunately, I had a gay man and a lesbian as two of my bosses, and the owners of the gas station had a pretty lax uniform policy, so I started wearing to skirts to work with my Shell shirt. I worked there for a while, but a serious of issues that, at this point, I can only blame on the fact that my diabetes was out of control resulted in me missing or being late for 1 shift too many and I was fired from that job. I found a job at a hotel nearby about a month later and I started working there. After obtaining that job, I started wearing heels to work. Everyone was required to wear pants, so that was never an option for me. When we got new uniforms, I requested a ladies uniform shirt and my boss got it for me. By that time, I was wearing skirts and dresses full time outside of work. After we hired a girl who came in wearing a shade of lipstick that I really liked, I started wearing lipstick at work and continued to do so until a customer review made my supervisor tell me to stop, temporarily. While I was there, I would often have conversations with my coworkers about who I was and how I expressed myself. I was quick to distance myself from Caitlyn Jenner when she first appeared on the scene, but I gradually came to realize that I didn't have to be like her to be a girl. I got to the point where I would only use the ladies restroom, so I would often go to the restrooms behind the kitchen to avoid causing issues with the customers. It was also during this time that I moved back in with my mother and that was were she started dealing with me being me full time.

Next, I'll talk about the first time that I ever called myself a woman in an official capacity.

One time I dreamt (last night) I was Kendall Jenner's poor sister, Caitlyn Jenner had me before marrying Kris. Kylie didn't exist. I don't understand why I was the only one poor in this family but ok. We lived in an apartment together (Kendall and I) and life was great (even though I had to work many hours and she didn't) until one day while I was cleaning I accidentally broke one of Kendall's super expensive lipsticks. I started crying so bad because I was very sorry, it was her favorite and it cost nine thousand fucking dollars. Anyway, she got a bit mad at first but after I apologized for the tenth time she told me I had to stop because it wasn't even that important. I felt really bad either way, so I said I would ask Kris for a loan, in that moment she looked at me with wide eyes and yelled "Are you fucking crazy??!!! It's only a lipstick!!! No way in hell you're gonna ask Kris for a loan, I won't let you!!! Stop it already...ffs you are fucking dramatic sometimes". My sister knew me really well. I immediately got up from the floor and hugged her with all my strength so I could show her how much I appreciated her words and how much I loved her.

Later, after the iccident, we invited three friends over (Stephanie/Rosa was one of them). We had dinner together, played some games, chat, etc. Around 1 am, they started garthering their things to leave and we were saying our goodbyes when Stephanie/Rosa kissed me, like really kissed me. Saying I was in shock is an understatement. I thought nobody saw us but when the door finally closed, Kendall looked at me asking all the questions. Coming away from my piece of Sylvia Rivera I felt inspired to continue on using transgender imagery in my work. I chose to use Caitlyn Jenner as she is a modern trans icon. She faced a lot of hate and discrimination from around the world, in blogs, magazines, on social media. Different from the times where the LGBTQ+ struggled to simply survive, we are now in an era where it’s ‘acceptable’ but not accepted. 

After creating my map I found the use of text effective in portraying the message I wanted to get across. I created a background with black watercolour and then created this swirl from paper that I wrote gay slurs across. I created this shape as I wanted to portray the feeling of spiralling out of control and being sucked into a black hole of dysphoria. On top of that I then took some lines from my map and laid them over the top, I thought this was effective in balancing the curvy image with some straight line. I wasn’t too happy with his messy the spiral in the background came out so will maybe try different imagery in my next development. 

In the foreground I chose to take arguably the most image of Caitlyn Jenner - when she ‘came out’ in Vanity Fair magazine. Over this I laid a plastic frame that I had found when scavenging on the beach. I think it works really well with the image as I wanted this moment to be framed in LGBTQ+ history. I also chose to include lipstick and wrote ‘fake’ in lipstick across the top. I felt really inspired by 90′s - 00′s magazines when doing this as it refers back to her method of coming out and gives me a ‘prom queen’ vibe to depict her glamour. 

I added a couple pieces of ‘litter’ and some shimmery gold fabric, which makes me think about the contrast between her beauty and the disgust from the public. To develop this piece further I would like to create a more detailed background or perhaps a more ordered composition. I would like to continue on with both text and iconic images of LGBTQ+ legends, and using found objects.

Describe what it was like coming out, what did you feel?

Coming out was scary! I was the first queer person I (was aware) I knew when I told the first person I was queer and then a couple of years after that I was once again the first trans person I (was aware) I knew. I also came out before OITB and Caitlyn Jenner which on one hand zero representation but on the other I wasn’t subjected to shitty jokes as often back then. I literally couldn’t even say the word trans until months after I started the process of coming out. I largely came out via email (thats how my group used to interact outside of in person) and when I got more confident through notes id pass people…while I was sitting next to them bc again I couldn’t say I was trans out loud. I remember my friends using the right name and pronouns and people asking them everyone was calling me that and id just reply ‘for the memes’ and uh walk away so you know not the uh most graceful of times. I did need to come out tho bc dysphoria was Really fucking with me and if I didn’t I probs would have ended up dead so even tho I look back on it and wish I had given myself some more time to be comfortable with my identity in order to assert myself when people’s reaction to me coming out was mean I really couldn’t have waited longer

What is one question you hate people asking about your sexuality?

lmao people telling me I have to be more specific than queer like nah - and also any gross questions re: trans people having sex

Describe the style of clothing that you most often wear.

Like uh emo/punk fusion…little me was right when they said it wasn’t a phase

What does makeup mean to you? Do you wear any?

I have an uh complex relationship with makeup. As someone who is read as male Im not socially rewarded for obvious make up and I love fancy make up like eyeshadow and lipstick - I wear lip stick if I’m gonna be somewhere safe to do so. Stuff like concealer and foundation tho I wear whenever I leave the house and recognise to an extent thats due to body insecurity but also like injecting hormones into my body every three weeks means I didn’t really get the woot I’m an adult time for less acne vibes

Reality TV series Keeping up with the Kardashians has just returned for its 16th season, meaning the family’s fights and blatant plugs for their product lines are once again on full display.

The series has now been running for just over a decade, with the family’s fortunes growing in tandem with it.

Kylie Jenner – who when the series started was just nine-years-old – is now 21 and a billionaire.

With an estimated fortune of $1bn (£760m), according to Forbes magazine, the make-up mogul is by far the wealthiest member of the ubiquitous Kardashian clan, which is led by matriarch and “momager” Kris Jenner.

However, the rest of her siblings aren’t exactly scrabbling around the back of the sofa for loose change.

Kim Kardashian West is a multi-millionaire thanks to her own beauty line, perfumes and her “kimojis”; Kendall Jenner is an international fashion model; Khloe Kardashian has her own jeans business Good American and eldest sister Kourtney Kardashian has benefitted from product endorsements and collaborations with fashion retailers.

Blurring the personal and the professional coupled with their astonishing reach on social media platforms has proved lucrative. The sisters’ combined following totals 537 million, allowing them to squeeze millions of dollars from exploiting pop culture.

Alexander McKelvie, professor of entrepreneurship at Syracuse University, also believes the show is carefully scripted.

“If you were to analyse the show, you would think it is very spontaneous,” he said.

“But it is most likely scripted and planned and very curated to provide a clear and compelling message about what the producers and the Kardashian family want to have revealed about them.”

How have the Kardashians made their millions?

This season of Keeping up with the Kardashians is focused squarely on a “scandal” involving Khloe Kardashian, her former partner Tristan Thompson and an alleged “hook-up” with Kylie Jenner’s best friend, Jordyn Woods.

In the show, Khloe laments: “It just sucks it had to be so public. I’m not just a TV show. Like, this is my life.”

Around the time the alleged tryst emerged, the price of the Jordy Lip Kit, which was a liquid lipstick and lip pencil that was part of a wider collaboration between Kylie and Jordyn, was discounted by 50%.

It soon sold out.

In an interview with The New York Times, Kylie Jenner said she didn’t know the price has been cut, adding: “I would never do something like that”.

But the fact is, the scandal shifted units.

“Essentially, their entire lives are on display the entire time and I think that it does make them appear more relatable to certain consumers,” said Alison Gaither, beauty analyst at market research company Mintel.

In that first episode, audiences also see Khloe at a photo shoot for her jeans company, Kim and Kylie discussing a perfume collaboration and Kim’s husband, the rapper Kanye West, getting in on the act by talking about his own projects.

Coinciding with all this was the launch of Kourtney Kardashian’s own lifestyle blog Poosh – a bit like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop website but with considerably more flesh on display.

Like most things Kardashian, Poosh was announced via Kourtney’s Instagram account, as was Khloe’s jeans business last year, and the social media platform was central to the success of Kylie’s cosmetics business.

Ms Gaither said: “What they’ve done the best is really leverage their social media following to create a brand that their followers actually want, especially when we think of Kylie Jenner.”

When Kylie first launched her lip kits back in November 2015, she was able to market to millions of fans directly through her Instagram account which meant she was able to dispense with the cost of marketing and get an instant reaction on what people did or didn’t like.

Lewis Sheats, assistant vice provost of entrepreneurship at North Carolina State University, said: “If you think 20 years ago for an entrepreneur to get feedback from 20 customers they might actually have to invite them in or build a product and get it in their hands or stand on a street corner and survey them.

“On a social media platform, they can reach hundreds of thousands of people within seconds and get feedback on a concept.”

Have the Kardashians always made money?

Some of the deals that the family struck in the early days of their fame, in particular involving older siblings Kourtney, Kim and Khloe, haven’t always been smooth-sailing.

The sisters became the faces of a make-up brand called Khroma Beauty through a licensing agreement. But after launching in 2012, the line was soon pulled from stores amid copyright infringement claims.

It rebranded as Kardashian Beauty, but even then the legal problems continued. It was only very recently that the family was able to extricate itself from the situation.

They also launched the Kardashian Kard, a pre-paid credit card aimed at teenagers and parents who wanted to track their spending.

It was soon scrapped, however, after Connecticut’s former attorney general Richard Blumenthal said he was “deeply disturbed” by the card’s high fees “combined with its appeal to financially unsophisticated young adults”.

Even now, not everything they touch turns to gold.

Kendall Jenner’s stint as the face of Pepsi collapsed in a storm of anger after she starred in an advert that some claimed trivialised the Black Lives Matter movement.

Pepsi pulled the advert the day after it aired.

Mum of three (soon to be four) Kim Kardashian West provoked the ire of the US Food and Drug Administration when she promoted an anti-morning sickness medicine.

And members of the family have garnered significant backlash for taking money to promote weight loss products.

Ex-Radio 1 presenter Jameela Jamil, who has a campaign around body positivity, described Kim Kardashian West as a “terrible and toxic influence on young girls”.

Where next for the family?

The family’s current television contract runs until this year and at this stage it isn’t clear if the series will continue.

Viewing figures for the last season of the show waned as the 1.3 million who tuned in for the premiere dropped to 851,000 by the end of its run.
