When Megumi attains legal adulthood, Y/N, a new student, gets enrolled in Jujutsu High. When you first see Megumi, you can't help but stare at him. He resembles a piece of art. He has the most stunning eyes you have ever seen; he's tall and thin. His unkempt and dark hair appears so soft.

Gojo introduces you to the class, and immediately there is a flurry of activity. As soon as you enter, you start to feel anxious. You feel everyone staring at you, but with one particular person's attention, you can't seem to shake.

Megumi was seated. in the back of the class, observing everything, just as he does for everything. When suddenly his eyes meet with the gaze of the new girl, Y/N,. He watches you intently, the corners of his lips curving up slightly, but not enough to call it a smile.

After about 6 months, you manage to get along with everyone in the class. You become friends with everyone. You are known for your friendly and energetic personality. You are a joy to be around. However, when you are around Megumi, your friendly personality seems to have a different feeling towards him. He is the only one you have trouble approaching, maybe because you feel nervous to speak to him. But whenever you both lock eyes, there's a certain feeling that neither of them can ignore.

It has been a full year, and everyone has noticed how you always get flustered around Megumi. Megumi, of course, noticed this too. Everyone has started to believe in the ship between the two. However, you keep denying it, but everyone still insists that there is something between you two. Whenever both of you hear this, you both blush, causing everyone’s suspicion to grow even more.

Nobara says, "I mean, he definitely likes you... I've seen how he looks at you."

You reply," I don't think so. He is so mysterious and introverted. Whenever I talk to him, he does not even make eye contact with me."

Finally, one day, it's time for one of Gojo's famous treats. Everyone is excited to go to this 5-star hotel that Gojo has gotten for the students when they aren't training. Megumi's sitting on a couch in one of the rooms, watching everyone talk and laugh to themselves. Everything's fine until he sees you walking in his direction. The closer you get, the more he feels his heartbeat growing faster than usual.

He tries his best to control his emotions and act nonchalant, but his heart is beating way too fast. He tries to hide this by fiddling with his hair, but his hands are trembling. He also finds himself trying to avoid your gaze. But the closer you get, the harder it is to avoid your gorgeous eyes. He also notices how your clothes seem to fit you perfectly. His insides begin to heat up a bit as he struggles to stay calm.

Megumi notices the extra-revealing clothes you're wearing. His eyes can’t help wandering down for a quick moment before he clears his throat and looks away. This is the first time he's seen you in something that shows so much skin. It catches him off guard. He feels his cheeks heat up a bit as he thinks about the way your body fits in the outfit. He struggles to shift his attention away from your body, but his eyes keep wanting to wander right back.

But you suddenly walk in the direction of Yuji and kiss his cheek.

Everyone’s attention is currently on a game of truth or dare, as Yuji has proposed. But Megumi's eyes keep watching Y/N's every movement.

Nobara gets to ask the truth from Y/N: "So, Y/N, we are so happy that you are a part of us now. But for a few months, it seems... something's going on with you."

As Nobara asks this, your eyes drift towards Yuji, biting your lower lip. While Yuji rubs the back of his neck.

Megumi notices Y/N’s eyes drifting towards Yuji, feeling a sharp pain in his chest upon seeing your stare at him. It causes him to clench his fist, trying to contain himself. His jealousy is now at an all-time high. He finds his fingers gripping the couch he was sitting on. He watches as Yuji rubs the back of his neck, looking nervous at the sudden attention that was thrust upon him. Megumi can also see the slight red tint that has risen on Yuji's cheeks. He watches on angrily, wishing it was him who was getting your attention and not Yuji.

Megumi watches on with growing anger as everyone continues to cooe about the two. He watches as you and Yuji smile nervously at each other. The jealousy's almost palpable at this point for him.

Everyone was so sure that you liked Yuji, but he knew it wasn’t so. Why didn’t anyone pick up on your behaviour around him? Megumi keeps looking at you, waiting for you to take your eyes off Yuji and look in his direction.

Megumi coughs as Nobara smirks at him.

Megumi notices your gaze quickly shifts his direction. A small part of him believes that this was enough for everyone to realise that you liked him and not Yuji. He holds his breath as he watches your gaze linger on him for a quick second before your gaze quickly goes back to Yuji. This makes him feel a wave of anger, but he manages to contain his emotions.

Suddenly you speak up, "Oh guys, I have to use the restroom. I will be back soon," you say, leaving the restroom.

Megumi slowly gets up after everyone starts to pay attention to Yuji again. He quietly slips out of the room to follow you. He watches as you walk towards the bathroom. He follows you, making sure to stay a bit far behind to avoid being noticed. He then quickly enters the same bathroom you went into.

Y/N enters the restroom, running the tap, and wetting a tissue paper.

"What do you think you're doing?" Megumi speaks, placing his hands on one side of the wash basin and trapping you.

You freeze in your tracks, immediately startled by the sound of his voice. You look up at the mirror, and you find his eyes staring daggers at you. Your breath caught in your throat. The atmosphere in the room is tense, with his body trapping you inside the small space. You can see the fire in his eyes, his gaze piercing into yours as he looks down at you. You can feel yourself starting to heat up due to the tension that has built up in the restroom. Your lips curve up to an unintentional smirk.

"This is the girl's washroom, Gumi."

He seems unfazed by the fact that they are in the girls washroom. In fact, he seems almost irritated by your reply. He watches as your eyes meet with his in the mirror once again.

"I know." He says this, his voice taking on a harsh tone.

You turn around to directly meet his gaze.

Megumi watches as you turn around to face him directly. Your faces are so close to each other that he can feel your breath brush against his own. The tension between both of you is so thick that it is impossible for both of them to look away from each other's gaze. 

"Tell me this whole thing between you and Yuji is a joke," Megumi says, his voice harsh but low.

Megumi feels himself growing angry at your response. His jaw tightens slightly as you confirm that you, in fact, did like Yuji. He keeps his hands on the basin, preventing you from moving an inch.

"Are you seriously telling me that you like him?"

"Probably, and besides, why do you care?"

He narrows his eyes at you, starting to feel an overwhelming wave of jealousy. He clenches his fists as he speaks, his tone getting harsher with every word he says.

"Why do I care? Did you really just ask me that question? As if it isn’t obvious."

"What's obvious?" you tease him intentionally.

He is starting to lose his patience, his voice growing to a more harsh tone.

"What do you mean? What's obvious?! Am I not making it more than clear enough to you? Are you really that dense to not see it?"

'Huh? I don't understand."

He can feel himself grow angrier as you show signs of being oblivious to his feelings. He grits his teeth as he speaks, his voice growing even more angrier at your oblivious nature.

"Do I have to spell it out to you? Stop playing with me, Y/N. Or else..."

"Or else what?" you smirk, testing his limits.

He finds himself staring at your smirk, his insides flairing up again. He fights the urge to lose control, but his anger and jealousy get the better of him as he feels his fingers tighten their grip around the basin, his knuckles turning white.

"Or else I’m going to do something that I know you won’t like."

He says, his voice growing threatening. He watches as your smirk turns into an annoyed frown as you realise that you pressed his buttons.

"Are you sure that I am not going to like it?"

Your flirtatious behaviour is making it extremely difficult for him to contain his emotions. He stares you down, trying to resist the urge to grab you. He watches as your smile grows back, and there is a bit of amusement in it.

He leans forward, his face now even closer to yours. His eyes meet yours, and his expression is now serious.

He hopes that nobody notices his heated state and how red his facial expression is.

Yuji sits up straight, seeing Megumi.

"Oi Gumi, where were you? and where is Y/N?" Megumi points to where you are sleeping on the couch.

"Gosh, she fell asleep already? I thought we were going to spend"

Megumi slams his drink on the table, not letting Yuji speak anymore.

Nobara snickers at his reaction.

After a while, Yuji gets up and walks to you, placing a gentle hand on your shoulder. He gently nudges your "Oi Y/N."

Megumi follows Yuji's movement, slapping his hands away from Y/N. "Don't touch yours," he says, glaring at Yuji, not letting him get near you as you sleep. His glare is intense enough to freeze Yuji in his spot, making him take a step back when he sees Megumi’s angry expression.

Yuji puts his hands up in an attempt to surrender himself as he realises that Megumi is not going to back down anytime soon. Megumi glances at the remaining people in the room, seeing their concerned expressions except Nobara as they see the tense interaction. He doesn’t take his eyes off Yuji for a single second, despite everyone’s glances. He is determined not to let Yuji touch you at any cost.

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO", everyone claps and celebrates.

Megumi watches as everyone cheers and claps for the sight they just witnessed. He can see their excited facial expressions as they celebrate and cheer. He feels a small part of him starting to relax as he watches everyone’s celebrations. But he stays alert and on his toes, making sure that nobody comes close to you as you sleep.

and I'm gonna be honest with you, on tumblr? TDP is an extremely adult heavy fandom. To the point that when I first joined the fandom back in 2018, I was one of the youngest, and still am, even in my early 20s now. And tumblr is a 17+ age site anyway, so young children shouldn't even be on here (and if they are, they had to sign a button saying they were older, and it's on them and their parents to figure out how to curate their online experience, soo).

So let me reiterate:

People are allowed to be squicked out by Claudia and Aaravos' age gap. But to act like there's a moral slant to it - Viren/Aaravos being better/fine/less morally problematic - is a facet of purity culture and culturally Christian attitudes towards sex. The issue isn't the discomfort, that's something that's often very personal and subjective, the issue is the moralization of that discomfort. Which, as a queer person, is very very similar to how discomfort and morality are utilized and weaponized against queer people and 'taboo' literature in general. Which again, as someone with a degree in English who also teaches the humanities for a living, is something I'm acutely familiar with.

"We have to be careful about what we portray in art because impressionable people may get confused between art and reality" is not a new take. It's the backbone of Plato's The Republic. It's what essays were written in opposition of in the 1600s. It's what 19th century British grammarians were concerned with when codifying 'proper' English down into the first real dictionaries. It's the same mindset curbing portrayals of LGBTQ+ people in media today, because when you moralize certain things, you put up emotional barriers than get in the way of actually dismantling the thing you're talking about in the first place. It's all the same shit. It's all the same moralized thought crime. And to say you should never question WHY something is uncomfortable is a surefire way to never question any bias you may or may not have - because biases aren't always bad, but they should absolutely always be examined so you can see where it's coming from. Yours and others personal discomfort is not a Standard, the same way what I'm personally comfortable with or discomforted by is not a Standard, but I'm not acting like mine is, and you are

'Rehashed proship discourse' is what helped cultivate the environment that led to a massive wave of harassment of the aro and ace communities online from 2013ish to 2017ish (which I saw first hand). It's also what led to me, a 16 year old, being harassed by grown adults and called a pedophile somewhat regularly for what cartoon characters I wanted to kiss, because I had the same opinions on not moralizing what people do in fandom as I did at thirteen, and as I do now.

If you look at any ship or dynamic with a large age gap and write it off solely because of the age gap, you're not engaging in critical thinking. It's a "you don't need to know why this thing is bad, you just need to know it has a label of Bad". It's as simple as that, and that's precisely the problem.

If you want to do more reading and to expand your horizons on the subjects I'm talking about (literary analysis, societal purity culture, upacking biases, etc.) I suggest this tag on my main blog, and feel free to come back and discuss. Slight correction: multiple artists Lily specifically favorited have been arrested for using CSEM as references for their 3D work. Kaneda used her toddler son as reference material, including having someone have intercural sex with him for that material. Masked is in prison for using a child of a family he was friends with for reference material and he had sex with the boy in question multiple times, even though he was able to dodge charges regarding that due to oral sex not being provable in a court of law. Amri, one of two animators who made the Spike rape animation Lily faved, was convicted of violating an Estonian law that prohibits adults having kids engage in sexual activity with them, adults putting children into prostitution, and adults using children for pornographic purposes.

If you look at screenshots from Sankaku, where thumbnails flagged for review for possibly being made with CSEM are framed in yellow, there are over a dozen images flagged in every. single. account's. favorites. That's how prolific the problem is on there. You can't avoid it even if you try if you look into the loli or shota tags. The fact that they have a flagging system because this keeps happening is in and of itself really alarming.

I get that not every person who makes NSFW of a character who's underage references real minors, and a lot of horny teens make art of teen characters they like, but while I respect anon's attempts to assume good faith and assume innocence rather than guilt... on Sankaku, CSEM and NSFW are genuinely, honestly interchangeable terms a lot of the time. Three artists in one year alone who abused children aside, any site that hosts 3D, photorealistic art is going to have art made from CSEM references because artists who use CSEM as reference material can blend in and hide behind those who don't.

That's why survivors hate that site. It's not "doing survivors a disservice" to refer to that shit as CSEM because 1. a large chunk of it is 2. a lot of users looking at it are looking for CSEM they won't get in legal trouble for and 3. even the 3D renders that aren't CSEM would still look like CSEM to anyone who's not a 3D artist who can pick out all the anatomy flaws in it.

As a survivor I get why anon wants to distinguish between art and exploitation of children because yeah, some 16 year old being horny for a 15 year old character isn't CSEM but that's just not what we're discussing when it's Sankaku.

Point in case: my abuser took a picture he had where he'd came on my face and had a 3D artist make a render of it with his brother's face instead of mine. It's still on Sankaku because even when they take it down, people reupload it. It's been in circulation for six years.

Hey Disco, how are you and your pets? How's life? Anyway, I have to ask: don't you think the Fandom Police are gaining an alarmingly large number of new members? Or am I just lucky enough to run into them more often than others? I'm asking because you've been fighting these people ever since I started following you, and it seems like you might be the one to know if things are getting worse (I noticed you have anon asks turned off, so I took the liberty of assuming) I'll admit that a lot of my arguments are about minors. Others usually climb up high to their moral Everest and start lecturing me about how it's wrong to read ff about fictional relationships with minors. Which is ridiculous if only because the minimum age for sex is defined differently by law in every country and because the characters we're talking about aren't real. It's very frustrating to talk to people like that who simply call me a pedophile and then feel like they're on some grand mission to cleanse a Fandom and bring back a Fandom Jesus or something. I'm not even in most of those Fandoms but every time I turn on tumblr there is another 20 something year old dumbass screaming into the void that anyone who will ship 15 year old with a 19 year old is a vile human being that needs to be punished. Hello hiiii I've been inactive for MONTHS, I kinda forgot I had a blog that's 'under construction' and I decided to add a info page about myself for now until I start posting doodles and such. I've been apart of the creepypasta fandom ever since the early 2000's, when it was first starting out and becoming popular, and I've decided to ACTUALLY become apart of it, as someone people may hopefully know and recognize me for by my art contributing to the community. I also have tags to help people move around my blog easier because I tend to reblog a lot. #gaymer art is any art I draw. #Gaymer ramble is when im talking about something. #Gaymer reply is when im replying to an ask. And lastly, #rb just stands for something I've reblogged. This blog will have quite gruesome/explicit themes at times. It's Creepypasta after all. I will mention things quite frequently like abuse, sex, and drug use. I will probably have art and posts that may hint at sexual themes/NSFW, but I will say I will not be posting actual NSFW art or writing on this blog. The most you might see in my art are hickeys an a characters neck or suggestive hand placement, nothing much more than that. My writing or other posts that aren't art may be more detailed about it, but again, I will not full on write the actual sex scene itself, only what would possibly lead up to it and afterwards. Adastra (Sci-Fi Visual Novel)

Last time, I talked about Echo, so now I'll talk about its much more successful followup, Adastra. Adastra is written by Howly and its primary artist is Haps. It's important to note that for a very long time, furry visual novels with great art and great stories were very rare. Echo had good art for sure, especially its CGs which are overall stunning even if they do contain minor continuity mistakes, but it's not amazing aesthetically. The sprites aren't very expressive, almost none of the backgrounds are illustrated, and some of the sprites just did not match their character descriptions. On top of that, the engine is very outdated and there's countless grammatical mistakes and continuity errors due to problems with being able to proofread and edit text. Adastra fortunately began production on a new version of Ren'py, the most popular visual novel engine for independent developers, which alleviated those technical problems on top of having some absolutely amazing art. Only a handful of backgrounds are not illustrated and the sprites are extremely expressive, adding a lot to the visual charm of its characters without having to rely solely on their writing. On top of that, the sprites and the CGs have the same artist, so the game is overall much more aesthetically consistent. Unlike with Echo, there's no caveats to it. There's nothing to warn about. A new player would have nothing keeping them from enjoying the game other than the story itself, which is good because the story is itself really good.

Adastra starts with the POV character, who we'll call Marco but who more often goes by the name KnotSlut69, being abducted by an alien. Fortunately the alien is a hot muscular himbo wolf prince named Amicus who basically wants Marco as his concubine, or a pet as he calls it. Now unlike the target demographic who probably would immediately jump at the chance to be a sex pet for an alien himbo wolf prince, Marco is not a furry (yet), has healthy relationships with his friends and family, and was planning on spending this time being a study abroad student in Rome, which he has been dreaming of and planning for for years. So, he actually has reasons not to want to be abducted and taken away to a far away planet. So he doesn't just show a bit of hesitance at the idea. He actively fights and resists, even knocking Amicus out and trying to commandeer the ship. Unfortunately, his interrogation method of just pressing random buttons until Amicus gets scared only leads to Marco almost crashing the ship into a star and depleting it of its very limited fuel. They just barely have enough fuel to fly to Amicus' planet of Adastra as Earth is too far at that point. Now Marco is left with no choice. He has to stay on Adastra until Amicus can figure out a way to get him back to Earth.

Adastra has many things I could gush over. The worldbuilding is really great, especially with its unique approach. The cosmology is really interesting. In the world of Adastra, there are three levels of advancement for civilizations. There are the Parents, who are essentially species that ascended to a state comparable to godhood, the Siblings, who are advanced enough to take on and distribute the knowledge and technology of the Parents to uplift even more species, and the Children, who receive the knowledge and technology of the Parents from the Siblings. In essence, Siblings are like colonial powers and the Children are the colonized peoples. In fact, one of the reasons Amicus came to Earth is he found records of there being an uplift attempt on Earth by Adastrans, which would make them an "abandoned Child" and would make him look good to have a member of a race like that as his pet, and it's clear he has to be right to some degree considering that uplift attempt happened in Rome and Adastra is very clearly reminiscent of early Rome to such a specific degree that it can't be a coincidence. Hell, the first Roman emperor was supposedly raised by wolves and Adastrans are a race of anthropomorphic wolves. They even speak a language that's pretty much just Latin with some relatively small changes. However, because humans have no formal records or common knowledge of Adastra, contacting them would be counted still as "first contact" which is extremely illegal without express permission of the Parents.

There's a lot more on top of that too. Because the goal in the game is to help Amicus become Emperor so he can take you back home, a lot of the game is focused on the history, politics, and culture of Adastra. Despite the fact you hardly get to see much beyond the palace for yourself, Adastra's world feels incredibly full and fleshed out and it uses that for dramatic and characterization purposes as well. For example, whenever something seems to go wrong with the process of deciding the emperor, Amicus is very dismissive of how the people feel about it, but unlike Amicus, Marco can't help but notice the smoke and fires rising from the capital across the lake from the palace. His brother, Cassius, does seem to understand what the populace wants, but he has a tendency to twist it into ugly bigotry and xenophobia. While Amicus ignores the greater political animosity of Adastra's population, Cassius manipulates it to fit his own agenda. However, as you find out more about Adastra, you learn more about what they do to their Children, which is akin to perpetual debt slavery. With that context, you may even start to wonder if the isolationist Cassius would be better overall as he wants to cut ties with the Children and, as an unintended consequence of that, free them from slavery. That is, however, with the drawback that he really hates Marco and directly threatens to execute him the second he gets the authority to.

As you may be able to tell, there is quite a lot more to Adastra than being a furry porn game. It's thematically very rich and touches on many issues that all connect to the overarching theme of disempowerment and lack of autonomy. There's a lot I could say about Adastra, but I have only really scratched the surface of that here. I cannot recommend this game enough, especially if you're new to furry visual novels. I know I could talk about issues like how overall uninteresting Marco is or how drawn out the epilogue is, but it's really nitpicky all around. I said last time Echo is my favorite game, but I would put Adastra in close second. Adastra's highs aren't quite up to Echo's, but if you just want a good introduction to the world of furry visual novels, I would recommend it over Echo in that regard.

Wolves and otherwise ksjhfg

So, not to be one of Those People who can only ship one thing and one thing only, but my interpretation of Jask is not like, "witchersexual" as some people call it in fandom spaces :P He's not going to be instantly horny about all witchers just because they're witchers, and he's not going to sort of,,, whore himself out to all of them I guess? to focus on the wolves specifically, he is so in love with and devoted to Geralt that I don't think he could stand to be intimate with his witcher's brothers, yknow?

it very much ties into how I view Jaskier as a whole, and a bit into a certain discomfort I have with some other interpretations of his character, that being that he's the Slutty Bi Man stereotype. Jaskier, in my opinion, is not this one track minded guy who can't keep it in his pants, and that's what he can feel reduced to in a lot, which very much makes me uncomfortable.

Call me a sap, but I love to follow Joey's actual words about how Jaskier is no womanizer (and in this case no man-eater either), he's someone who falls in love with everyone and so very easily. He's a romantic, and he loves sex, sure, but I think he ultimately loves it for more than the basest of pleasures he gets from it, its a deeply intimate act that he shares with these people because, for however shallow or fleeting it is, he loves these people. He loves them for their eyes or for the way they said hello to him or how they played with their hair just before they spoke, or how they sat in the corner alone to brood :P

"but Miles," you say, "you created Ivan to be a witcher Jaskier was horny about." I reply to you yes, we did do that - operative word being was. Ivan was moreso meant to be just,,, a rival in skill and work with Geralt, I suggested he be someone who had known Jask first (very briefly mind you, they only met didn't travel together) bc I thought it would have been fitting given Jaskier seems to be someone who has none of the fear of witchers that most of the continent does when he meets Geralt - who says he hasn't met another? Ivan is meant to be Not Good for Jask anyway, a man who only wants him because he's Geralt's, and Ivan's biggest issue is he just wants everything Geralt has.

this is even more of just my own opinions about the character too, but I think that a lot of Jaskier's overtly horny expression is more of an image he has to keep up anyway. He has a reputation to uphold! He's Jaskier, he's viewed as this promiscuous, showy thing, ad that's what people expect of him - and Jaskier needs to meet expectations. I do get hate. I get insults like touch grass, being called a moron, wasting my productive life on hosting it, and the usual "please commit suicide" ala Anon. Because nobody has the balls to say KYS with their personal blog or profile exposed. I won't even call them out if they do. At best, I will just ignore or block the son of a bitch that told me to die. I am an anti in terms of not being a fan of the ship. As old Internet days if part of the fandom, you can see people that are things like Anti-SasuSaku (Sasuke x Sakura) or Anti-ZADR (Zim and Dib Romance). Someone who is not a fan of a major or popular ship within the community. Some go as far to draw art that expresses it. It doesn't apply to ships, but characters as well. You now rarely see it these days. Especially on a character itself. Most of the anti in early days, for example, hated how female main characters were portrayed in the media they were from, see Sakura Haruno from Naruto. But now, you can't since you'd be probably get labeled as sexist or something worse. Of course, there were antis related to male characters, but it wasn't as prominent as the girls. Mostly because series that focus on the boys, shonen genre being the most popular one at the time, that girls don't get much great development compared to the main boys. Yeah, I get moments of Anons telling me that Davekat isn't real and shouldn't get offended by it. I know they aren't real. I just wish to criticize it from how it harmed the series itself and how some people within the fandom acted. Though if they say I shouldn't be offended by Davekat because those characters are fake, then that means they should not be offended if people ship Kanaya or Dirk with the opposite gender, despite having interest in the same sex or is canonically with someone of said same sex. Not only that, someone like them should also not be offended by loli characters because they are also drawings. It doesn't mean people who make them are pedophiles. But they will be upset if I point that out.

So I have a question about "problematic fanfictions"… not underage sex for once.

I lurk around in a fandom for a ship where there has been some drama regarding the appearance of a trope that makes a canonically "good character "- basically known for NOT being a bigot and not much else - into a pseudo nazi. Things are complicated by the fact that the love interest would canonically be in the discriminated-against group. The fact that the trope they are going for is a romanticisation of Nazi/Holocaust victim is NOT subtle - to everyone but the people enjoying it, apparently.

Lots of people were very upset and pointed out why it's problematic, even calling for it to never be used, the authors got upset in turn. I think there were heavy discussions/fights about it in private too.

Point is, as much as I think the trope is shit (honestly not just because of the nazi romanticisation, but for its overall relationship to canon) I also think everyone can write whatever. Being into the creepy kinky stuff myself, I was not particularly shocked. But I also get why people would be. To be frank, the arguments against it were not that different from the criticism you would get around something like The Night Porter.

So this got me thinking, do you think it is possible for a type of criticism of fanfiction that is a conversation on why things can be problematic and that still allows for things to exist?

I get that you don't know where the person is coming from, or that self-awareness is not required to write something, but sometimes it's simply the matter of telling someone "hey, you just wrote something very racist/sexist/whatever ".

What I am asking I guess if we are ready for criticism of fanfiction in a more literary sense.The way we would canon. Or are they too different a thing that it is not possible? Lots of people are very against any kind of criticism in fanfictions, and I've literally seen people get upset at commenters pointing out typos or anachronisms. A lot of the time the culture is "if you don't have anything good to say, say nothing", and I follow this rule, but it can feel claustrophobic at times.

And while I get don't like - don't read and practice it myself, I also can understand people being upset at, say, knowing a negative stereotype about their group or a romanticisation of their trauma is around without being able to discuss it explicitly.

I am not even sure mainstream criticism is doing a good job at not being pearl-clutching and censorship as of late. But I also think it's very important to just talk about things, and I have yet to see a space in fandom where the bad is discussed without turning into a fan war, though I might just be unlucky.

Telling them where?

If you're in a discord for a fandom, and someone has a massively offensive headcanon they want everyone else to adopt, it's absolutely appropriate to explain that it makes you uncomfortable and why.

A review in a bookmark or a review blog on tumblr or wherever else could absolutely be literary criticism.

AO3 comments, however, are typically seen as a conversation with the author. The author may not be open to conversation. They may not even be open to a much less critical conversation than this.

It's claustrophobic because you're treating the AO3 comments section as the sole place for discussion. That's the equivalent of asking the author's official website to stand in for book review blogs, goodreads, and amazon product reviews.

If you want to build a space in fandom for those discussions, you should do so. It will be tough because most reviewers are much less intelligent and much less informed than they think they are and because a lot of people have ulterior motives for criticism.

It will also be tough because there's no reason someone should care about fic reviews of a fandom they aren't in aside from yelling at creators for offensive art. If you want a good faith critique space, it probably needs to be one where the people present are delving into their own fandoms with an eye to improving their own writing/art/recs.

In practice, the "how to write X" blogs I've seen around here have all been unintentionally offensive, treated their group as a monolith while trying to do the opposite, and have been virulently, virulently anti-kink.

I think it would help to have an aim for your space. "I want to tell this AO3 author that they hurt me" is not an aim that will ever go anywhere but mega-wank. "I want to improve my own writing" might go somewhere productive.

THIS IS EMBARRASSING

Okay this is...troubling. Only because I know from @yazthebookish that this specific user is especially problematic within the ACOTAR community. So this comment was made on a Gwynriel TikTok (cardans.tail (lmao the name 😂)). So basically, the TikToker made a video using a sound and comparing that sound to some of the colorful language that some E/riels call her, not the good Elriels but the toxic E/lriels. And then this specific user commented this ^.

And wow. Like I had no idea I was a racist or a misogynists. I also had no idea that that any of mutuals were because honestly my mutuals seem like very lovely people.

Now this comment got over a hundred comments already and most of it is this toxic E/riel trying to defend herself against Gwynriels. And her defense is also toxic.

Now I do appreciate those who stood neutral in this conversation, and agree that both sides have their own share of toxicity, but that isn't to say that all sides are bad. I know for a fact there are good Elriels out there and I will respect them as they respect me. But when I see posts like this:

Like I personally don't have a problem with the fact that this person is not Brazilian. Like I don't think that has anything to do with me, it feels like that kind of a heritage thing and doesn't have anything to do with this fandom. But I did hear that a few E/riels did call the Gwynriels from Brazil "mutts" so I suppose if this specific anti weren't apart of the legion of haters then they shouldn't warrant such hate. But also, as this person commenting against this anti said that this person has a habit of hunting through social media and attacking our side of the fandom relentlessly. And even if they aren't active on Tumblr they didn't deny that they still attacking Gwynriels on Twitter.

And even if this person is not playing victim (which they kind've are) their "truth" is their opinion. Their vicious opinions that result in harassment against a certain party of mutuals.

Oh this poor, misguided soul. Kudos for this user for keeping up with the argument, I'm amazed how you can deal with such...troubling people. This poor, lost, confused anti must've been blind to all the hate comments that Steph received. The whole point of the live was not to confirm their ship (like how a bunch of E/riels wanted) but it was mostly to catch up and discuss the new release of Crescent City 2. Yes there were snippets of Azriel and ONE question about Gwyn (because again, toxic E/riels are convinced that Gwynriel is a pedophilic ship), but you shouldn't be pressed about there not being any questions about Elain. Elain was a present in four books prior so I'm sure in the lives for those books there were plenty of questions about her. As for Gwyn, she is a completely new character and I can't believe that instead of getting insight into her character Steph and SJM felt the need to confirm her age so Gwynriels could feel like their own ship was less problematic.

This kinda explains itself so no further word on this argument.

Yes, there are many sides to this fandom that are extremely toxic. All the Gwynriels I found on Tumblr have been extremely nice and caring people. They are very supportive and protective of their ship and as long as you don’t poke them there shouldn’t be a problem. But if you poke them then they come at you with textual and cited evidence. And believe me there is enough evidence to prove that this anti is a bully and harasses many Gwynriels and Eluciens

The fact that their only argument is that Gwynriels are racists and misogynists probably means that they don’t have any real argument and this is a more personalized matter. Because no, on this side of the fandom we are not misogynists. We want both Elain and Gwyn to grow into beautiful empowering female characters. Elain can branch out into her own person. She isn’t just Feyre’s gardener she can expanse into being more than that. She has potential. And Gwyn isn't Azriel’s booty call. Her existence isn’t simply tailored to being Az’s love interest for us. Gwyn stans are all interested in her journey of self-healing and self-discovery. It was hinted multiple times that her part in the books is bigger than what we realize and who knows. Maybe her role is going to Spring Court and bringing Tamlin back to his senses. Or maybe her role is finding her family in Autumn Court. We don’t know. It’s not misogynistic to think that these beautiful female leads can grow into strong and independent characters. They aren’t just Azriel’s love interests they also have their own journeys ahead of them as well

I try to stay away from the E/riel side because, well, it’s what I expect the Court of Nightmares to be amongst this fandom. But never have I once came across E/riels who try to defend Gwyn’s assault. Instead I see them arguing that the fact she went back to the library after the Blood Rite is a sign that she and Azriel aren’t going to be endgame. Ummmm Gwyn risked her life in a vicious trial where she had to be kidnapped, drugged, and then had to fight for her life in order not to be killed and raped. Of course she went back to the library. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t going to get her own healing journey. And just because we ship her with Azriel, write NSFW fan fiction and draw NSFW art doesn’t mean we are invalidating her trauma. A large part of why I ship Gwynriel is because I see the tremendous potential between them. Though I’m not against them have their own separate journeys of healing I also feel like they can help rise each other up.

And also it’s not like SA survivors can’t heal from experiences and have sex ever again. In fact, a lot of survivors find healing in sex because it’s a sign that they refound their own control of their bodies and accept themselves and can move on healthily. Many Gwynriels can identify with Gwyn and this ship because of their own experiences in their lives and artists such of myself incorporate the more intimate parts of this ship because we identify with those moments and like to envision that moment where Gwyn can finally accept herself and her more intimate side.

The rest of the comments are just back and forth arguing but for the most part it is clear that this fandom needs to grow up. Stop the bullying, stop the hate comments, stop everything. The post on TikTok was to show that this person was being bullied for simply liking a ship and how did it end? With both sides trying to justify themselves. Bullying and harassment shouldn’t be justified. I shouldn’t have to see why talented artists like @vmiae have to explain themselves or why an entire community are being accountable for one or two people’s actions. One person doesn’t speak for all. This person clearly did not get the message and we can only hope that they learns the truth and isn’t just speaking from their own opinion.

In The Case Of Shipping. Queer Ships and Straight Ships

A topic I will never shut up about. Before I start I will admit, I am on the queer side of fandom a lot more often than I am on the straight side and I will be speaking from that perspective. If you have another perspective to share with me, please do so respectfully.

Shipping will always be something that gray to me. I like shipping culture and enjoy certain communities around certain ships, but people getting way too defensive about it will always be something to drags me emotionally. It makes me sad especially when it's people who are like me. Fellow queer shippers trying to explain why certain things between two characters can be seen as queer coding and then being called delusional by people who are either willfully ignorant or simply don't understand the point of queer coding. That's not to say queer shippers are without fault, however. We do have a really terrible tendency of calling people who don't like our ship homophobic and ignoring characters from other media that ARE actually written to be queer, in favor of continuing to argue that there are next to no queer characters in the content they like. While they are scarce they are not non-existent. Not to mention, a decent amount of character portrayals do tend to be very extremely sexual and can be found in places that they do not belong.

That being said straight shippers aren't without their faults either. For starters, I don't really see this being brought up, but they also like to portray characters in very sexual ways as well. Particularly, male characters, with a popular means of sexualization being centered around predatorial behavior towards one of the female characters, or being a C H A D. Again, I personally don't have a particular issue with this, but just like queer sexual content, it does not belong where anyone can see it. Straight shippers also have a bad habit of calling queer shippers p*dos and perverts, even for the most inoffensive gay fan content imaginable.

With so much tension heating up between two groups, any interaction can come off as an attack even if that wasn't the intention. We queer shippers tend to get sensitive when someone has the opinion that our ship isn't real. Now sometimes we are justified in getting annoyed with these people as some of them will go out of their way to find joke posts and innocent fan art of a same-sex ship and pull that line, even though that wasn't really the point of the original post. However, even in people's own spaces when they aren't going out of their way to attack us, we still get offended. What gives? So let's take a tweet that's similar to what I'm describing:

Now on its own, there's nothing wrong with this tweet. In general, there's nothing with this tweet. It's just showing frustration with people making every relationship a romance even if two characters only interacted for a few minutes. That's true. Shippers do enjoy pairing two people together, particularly men, who don't really interact with each other. Here's the thing though. This is an argument that's very popular and one that's been used by some not-so-well-meaning people.

Alright, it's sad people hours now, sorry sis. So for a good amount of queer people who are online or are big fans of fiction, fandom has been a big part of their lives. Shipping, in particular, holds a special place in many queer fans' hearts as, even though it's pathetic, ships were a lot of people's first exposure to genuinely queer content focused around queer characters. It would be through this shipping that a lot of people would find friends who were into the same media and fan content. Some of these people would grow up together and eventually find out that the other was queer. Some of these people would go on to have romantic relationships with each other, and because they meant because of a ship, would go on to continuously celebrate it as if it were real because part of the reason their romance is real is because of that ship. Sometimes people will hold certain ships dear to their heart because they were able to use them to not only find other people like them but explore their own sexual and romantic orientation via fan fiction and fan art.

The attachment to fictional, non-canon relationships would be met with consequences, however. A lot of people would become TOO immersed in their ship and would start to get into debates with straight shippers. Many of which were, unfortunately, homophobic or queerphobic in some way. A lot of the arguments these people would use were a lot of the arguments used today. "Said ship isn't real, you're delusional", "That wasn't the writer's intention", "Stop forcing your ship onto other people", "Two people can't be friends anymore".

Now is this what the tweet is actually saying? Probably not. TityMaster69 might be someone who has faced harrasment from shippers innocently trying to vent out their feelings, but because many people with malicous intentions have said the exact same things and used it as an excuse to speak ill of queer people in fandom, it FEELS a lot more mean-spirited than it might actually be. To add to that, many malicious people have used the reactions of queer shippers as a means of giving a pass to genuine queerphobia inside fandom outside of shipping:

Now to be fair StarVolt358 did apologize to the person who retweeted the post, but the fact that they even brought it up at such an inappropriate time does still prove my point because, in a way, they did bring it up to draw less attention to the queerphobia in the KH fandom.

Stuff like this has led to queer shippers being berated and attacked by straight shippers in the community, even though in some cases they can do more damage than the people they're calling out. Let's not forget when Reylo fans doxxed and harrassed the actors because they didn't like whatever happened in the Rise of Skywalker, or when Sokai fans harrassed the voice actor SpuukyLIVE on Twitter for joking that the scene in kh2 when Sora sees Riku again was gay.

As I do not have a lot of energy, there are a lot of nuances I've missed, like many people who like queer m/m ships being straight teen girls and not actual queer people or queer people who like straight ships. This was, however, just a post to get my full thots out there. I'll shut up now.

Let me tell you how I felt after reading Banana Fish for the first time a year ago. After reading it I was emotional mess, its 2017.

Any idea of NSFW art of the series was something I personally didn’t want to see at the time. The canon was enough it was something and I didn’t want to see at the time ( it didn’t exists back then anyways ). My heart was broken and I was hurt ,the fanbase didn’t exist back then I was alone with my pain. 

Fast forward to 2018.

At this point I have read the manga multiple times, I had a lot of time to think about it and I was Ok with NSFW art now, the anime is 18 episodes in , the fan-base is thriving and huge, but we have a problem that I have dreading since early 2018, what do we do once NSFW content starts being made ?

The main discussion I have been seeing around the fanbase is “is NSFW art of Banana Fish Ok? is NSFW art of Ash OK ? “

What is the moral of the Banana Fish manga and story in general or  the main point?

Sexual abuse and abuse is general is bad, its a very clear message and we all got it. Rape is bad, abusers are bad. Ash is a victim of sexual violence but despite his trauma he finds love, Ash never once consented to sex in canon remember this bit , also the universe Banana Fish story takes place is very messed up and unfair . 

What does a fandom in general do ? 

Give you more content by fan-artist , shippers, fanfic writers that can be rooted in the canon of Banana Fish universe but also does not have to be. ( AUs, fanfics , OOC fics and so on ) 

So what does this mean for Banana Fish fan content ?

It just means different people will write, draw and ship things that aren't in canon. So if you enjoyed the manga and you feel like any additional content is not necessary for you then you don't have to consume it.   

I know some people are uncomfortable with NSFW art in general but I myself am not. 

NSFW art and the  sexualization of Ash Lynx

In canon ,sexulazing Ash with all his traumas seems like something nobody should do,  except the manga does it in canon and Ash is given no choice but to use his sex-appeal to get out of situations. ( It makes sense in canon and out of canon it can be even interrupted as fanservic keep this in mind , context maters here ).

We know from canon mentioned above that Ash never consented to anything sexual but fanart and fanfics are not a part of the canon ,they don’t represent the story of what Banana Fish is in canon, they represent the desires and wishes of the fans works and the people consuming them. 

So NSFW for Banana Fish exists and will continue existing no matter if somebody likes it or not.

It all comes down to how comfortable you are with NSFW in general. 

So if somebody draws a NSFW fan-art or writes fanfics where Ash has consensual sex with another character, I don’t see a problem there. Because fan works ARE NOT CANON ! 

You can like them or dislike them it doesn't matter how much fan content there is the Banana Fish canon is untouchable and still tells the same story, you can not ruin Ash by writing a NSFW fanfic or fanart.

Policing the fanbase on how they can or cant enjoy a specific work of fanfic or fan-art is a sigh of not being able to tell the difference between a fanwork and canon and that is a problem of an individual, not the fanbase. ( also saying that it does not matter if Ash is a fictional character is creepy as fuck, it makes all the difference ) 

If you don't know the difference between a fictional character and a real person then you have no right telling other people what they can or cant like in a fanbase.

As much as I love Ash Lynx as a character ( and I do trust me ), this white knighting and purity policing and calling shippers pedos is crossing the line of sanity. If you cant handle fan-works or NSFW , then DON'T CONSUME IT ! Its that simple. 

The Banana Fish fandom does not just exist for one persons taste or views, there are a lot of us here and we all have the right to do what we want., being salty does not change it. 

Fan works are meant to me enjoyed and consumed by people who want them , being in a fan-base is about fun not about hating things somebody else enjoys. 

So in short , if you like the idea of BF NSFW go for it , it doesn't change the canon , if you don't like it then just don’t consume it, block the artist , Blacklist NSFW , its non of your business if somebody else likes it , they have the right to do so just like you have the right to not like it. 

Always remember that being a part of a fan-base and its level of involvement is up to you , its a choice.
