Talking about mommy issues... I'm not a 100% fan of Jack as the destiel son BUT it's important to me that going there means acknowleding that "archetypically" speaking Dean is The Mother while Cas is The Father*. And this isn't just because, when Sam accuses Dean of acting like their father, he replies with a Freudian slip if I've ever heard one ("I'm not his mother"), it's also why Chuck's myth-retelling doesn't work (Abraham is totally Cas and he and Jack subverted that myth) 'cause first he doesn't understand Dean and second he's not an astute storyteller and doesn't realize his story was already subverting the myth he wanted to re-enact. Therefore he should've created a situation where Jack (The Son) was forced to kill Cas (The Father) if he wanted to provoke Dean, this was Jack's original sin according to Dean, come on Chuck, it's been 14 seasons, everybody already knew Dean was not gonna kill Jack. He's totally fine with caging and entrapping his putative sons but he draws a line at killing them (insert that meme from Community). (I mean, I know Chuck wants Dean to do his bidding but after 14 years he had to get a little more creative than that. Maybe he should've listened to his editor Metatron, just saying. "maybe less about detail and more about balance") ((hello Becky and Metatron parallel)).
It would have also meant that Jack's story would've gone back to its genesis + the long tail of dead parental figures (not only Kelly and Cas but Nick/Lucifer and Mary and whoever else I'm forgetting lol).
By the end of s14 there is a short-circuits of symbols so it all had to go tits up, hence the rising of the dead etc. etc.
*This doesn't mean they are the Good Mother and the Good Father as they're clearly not but these are the primordial energies that they both channel to Jack. Also, obvs patriarchy in SPN is very much alive and well as demonstrated by the fact that the Good Mother and the Good Father are only the Dead Mother and the Dead Father and unfortunately for Jack this is what he got when he was born. He's not even born and he already lives in an ideal world with ideal figures compared to whom he'll always fall short.
Also, Jack's got the power to wake up from the Empty his putative father because his Mother (Dean) is grieving his death and he wants to please him: Jack is a total mama's boy.
#chuck coercing dean into the role of The Father is part of the reason why his story has never worked#this doesn't mean that dean doesn't uphold patriarchal values cause he clearly does#nurturing and caring are nice traits but they can also be unhealthy#it's quite telling that in the show about absent fathers dean never leaves and when he does is to follow other father-figures#and that is number one issue with cas is him leaving#which could mean nothing#supernatural#spn#castiel#dean winchester#jack kline#chuck shurley#spn s14#super-m/Others

one thing I never ever see us talk about is that jack is his son, and losing him would absolutely ruin cas. it did wreck him.
I think, when cas comes back and learns what jack did, what he gave up, he would be torn apart by pride (in what jack sacrificed to save the world) and grief (in jack giving up his life, in jack being only four and losing out on his own life).
cas loves dean. it’s canon, it’s romantic, it is likely requited, but if the end of the world came down to jack or dean, cas would choose jack over and over. it’s shown in season 14’s final episode alone. neither love outshines the other, certainly — but that love also does not disappear.
they are different kinds of love, absolutely. this post is basically in response to a lot of destiel fics focusing on dean and cas (which is fair!), but I would love to see more fix-it fics with jack (and sam), and I would especially love to see more fics with jack where he maintains the role that he chose as god, but where cas grieves him while he and dean sort out their issues. (there’s a wonderful fic that exemplifies cas’s grief — highly recommend “fenario” by ftmsteverogers on ao3.)
I think the only thing the finale may have gotten right (entirely by accident, as it was a cover-up as to why they wrote misha out of it) was that cas might choose to stay a little bit longer with jack because he loved him, and he was his son. he might not go rushing to find dean because of his concern for his child in that child’s new, massive role.
give me more cas grieving the child his son could never be.

Sam was robbed prime Jack bonding time because the writers and fans favored Dean even tho Sam’s relationship with Jack would’ve made more sense
every time i see that damn season with Dean hanging out with Jack, i'm like, WHERE WAS THIS ENERGY BRO FUCK!!!!!!!
i understand what was happening with cas dying and dean being sad all about it but like cmon, to hate this child who also cared about cas too. AND essentially his surrogate father. FFFFFUCK DEAN MAN.
Sam made more sense since he could literally relate to Jack more. It oh so badly made more sense but like yknow. "dean is a father to all children" WHAT ABOUT SAM
#i get heated about this topic#sam never gets to have a scene where's interacting with a kid#we were simply robbed#Sastiel fathers with jack was robbed oh so dearly#sam you will always be that child's dad#and his father's husband#AKA cas#sastiel#supernatural#sam winchester#samcas#castiel#samstiel#spn#sastielnation

"why do you hate claire and emma so much but you're interested in ben and jack" because im a misogynist. hope that helps
#spn#more seriously it's because i'm interested in family dynamics as they are rather than in some idealized imaginary.#dean did not meaningfully parent emma. cas did not mainingfully parent claire.#ben and jack however will both be crippled with lifelong trauma due to the failings of their respective fathers. that's the part that#interests me

i think perhaps another layer of autism in jacks character is that he’s fine with being different, but is always upset to be treated or perceived differently.
#i want to make this longer but I’m tired and i wanna finish my drawing#does this make a SMIDGE of sense#cal.txt#spn#supernatural#jack kline#autistic jack kline#autism experiences#autistic coded character#like he outwardly defines his identity as the son of Lucifer/a hunter/a Winchester#he’s often prideful of his powers & strengths but instantly ashamed if they’re perceived as weird or wrong#sam dean & cas are basically a support system for him in the same way as many other autistic support systems#they’re consistently accepting of him as he is—even when dean didn’t necessarily like him he still just took jacks mannerisms as they were#or the fact that jack decided to be that age right from the womb? they’re like ‘okay sure whatever that’s his own thing’#the offered reassurances that he’s not any less of a person bc of his difference#that they’re all weird in their own ways and it just doesn’t matter#he can accept that he’s not fully human and his father is the Supreme Agent Of All Evil#this is about don’t go into the woods btw. that episode is like Peak autism but in a bad painful curl up and rotting way#re the original script: ‘he’s back to being the oddball again’#read: he doesn’t LIKE being the oddball#he knows that he’s fundamentally different and not normal and he can accept that#i mean his state of demigodhood is basically like being born with bad eyesight#it’s like the difference between being used to and accepting of bad eyesight vs being called four eyes#is that a good analogy idk . Dark night of the soul for Cas occurs in s10-s12
So, I've seen some chatter that Cas's look in season 10 was somehow influenced by Sam, but it wasn't.
It was influenced by JIMMY.
We see the groomed hair and "nice guy look" evolve SPECIFICALLY after Cas met and began to love Claire Novak.
He wishes he could be Jimmy for her. Cas wants to be "like people." He, in Meredith's words, "tries to be something he's not." He spends nearly all of s10 and early s11 repressing the "gruffer" parts of her personality.
From a little unkempt:
To clearing his throat, and trying to squawk out a voice that is a little higher, a little less threatening:
And he realizes he likes protecting her. Maybe he could be a father instead of a soldier. And like Jimmy was discontent, longing for a "higher" purpose, Cas longs for a "lower" one.
///
And so, Cas feels this spark of...something. Something he wants to be.
She said she'd call him.
She likes him in a tie.
He doesn't actually want to leave her behind. But he's Cas, not Jimmy. What right does he have to love her?
///
The next time we see Cas, he won't just have a tie, but he'll look less angelic. Tamer. "Human."
The loss of Claire hits him hard. He doesn't know why they began to love each other, but they did.
And they can't stay together. It's too painful. It wouldn't be good for her well-being.
///
He cleans himself up even more, perhaps hoping if he becomes more like Jimmy, he'll discover that sense of purpose he felt when he was with Claire.
I think the next era is the most like Jimmy he's ever looked:
///
We'll see him smooth his hair down in s12 too, taming his inherent wildness as he tries to "civilize" himself. He doesn't look like Jimmy anymore; he looks more like Cas. But he's still struggling to accept and integrate his own wildness, his angelicity.
Like the pimpmobile, emulating the look of Jimmy doesn't fit.
Because he's Cas.
He'll leave both behind.
#cas stuff#jack adjacent#jack stuff#the pimpmobile passes to metatron as he then struggles with his own humanity actually#and not this is not JUST about dean#though it is about dean#first... cas is reckoning with his war crimes#cas doesn't wanna be cas... cas did such horrible things#so he wonders if he could be a hunter a dean or a father a jimmy#he wants a cause but he wants a family#JACK IS BOTH

if you wanna write dean as a father figure to jack you need to nut up and acknowledge that he is an abusive parent. if we can even call him a parent in relation to jack tbfh it’s a massive stretch. he’s more of a deadbeat than john was
#tragic lack of sam-and-cas-coparenting-jack stories#also a tragic lack of sam-and-dean-repeating-the-cycle-with-jack stories#the show: jack has 3 dads#me bc my brain is huge: jack has a retired heavenly weapon for a dad and his biological father’s torture victim for a mom#and then there’s his mom’s partner who is very obviously the Man Of The House and thus the most important one to please#and that guy thinks jack is a freak and wants to kill him#found family 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰#spn

i think dean was valid for not trusting jack at first because cas….wdym paradise? the shit raphael said would happen after the apocalypse??? the thing that lucifer talked about as the planet being devoid of humans???? THAT PARADISE?!?!!??!!
#and then michael (years later) is like ‘my father will usher in paradise’ like uhhhh#HELLO????#if i was him my spidey senses would be TINGLING!!!!!#alarm bells would’ve been going off in my head#like narratively the concept of paradise and god are very much intertwined#so….i don’t think he was wrong for being fearful#especially after cas got possessed like when i was watching it i was so nervous lmao#i mean yay jack isn’t evil but if he was and we see what he did under heaven’s orders like ahHHhhh!!!!!!#is this anything#castiel#dean winchester#supernatural#jack kline

*goes back on tumblr to see the bad dad discourse*
I’m going to scream yall oh my godddd. Ok so the thing is. They are all bad parents but the reason they are all bad parents is literally because dean is an active abuser and sam and cas keep enabling him and don’t stand up enough for jack to them. They are the battered spouses. Dean wants to put jack in the box. He forces sam to manipulate jack into it. Cas is trying to figure out whether they should put jack in the cage. They’re literally awful. All of them. Jack had an abusive father and two fathers who were victims of said abuser’s abuse and also enabled and occasionally aided the abuse aimed at him even if they didn’t like it. Jack deserved better than all of them.
Anyways. The actual ranking is something like this:
Tied for worst=Dean & Lucifer
Tied for mid=Sam & Cas
best=Kelly. And she didnt even get the chance to raise him beyond the womb.
Sam and cas are Bobby’s mother on the floor picking up the broken pieces of plate that dean threw there while he hurls abuse at his son. If jack had killed dean the way Bobby killed his father, they would have had the same reaction as his mother. They are the ones asking why he always has to provoke him, albeit they are nicer to him.
Dean is violently abusive to jack. This is textual. This is onscreen. It doesnt matter whatever reasons he had, i literally dont want to hear “he was grieving cas/mary/his freedom/etc/whatever” yes he was. All of that is true. That doesnt change the fact that he was violently abusive to jack, and that he was the one literally trying to kill/imprison him on multiple occasions.
#supernatural#sam winchester#dean winchester#castiel#jack kline#my meta#my hot takes#bro y’know what it makes me think of#max miller#max miller getting vengeance on his entire family for the abuse#and that includes the stepmother who stood there and did nothing#because she let it happen#thats sam and cas#dean is the abusive father burning his son with cigarettes#and beating him#literally#except hes worse because hes trying to kill him

It's totally just my images-fuelled brain's fault but the pipeline from Chuck smiting Jack and Sam shooting Chuck to Sam shooting Cas and Cas smiting Not-Jack is kinda real.
(This is not a 100% original thought of mine but it was inspired by one of @shallowseeker 's insightful metas)
#it can also be added that Jack killed Mary out of a complex mix of emotions just like Cas kills Bel-Not Jack#and if Chuck really wanted fathers killing sons... well. he kinda got that. with cas killing Bel-Not Jack#chuck is such a bad liar lol like i'm starting to think he's one of the worst kind: the one who's not even aware he's lying#and i mean he's a bad liar cause he elaborates this grand lies and this is usually what bad liars do#tags got me carried away BUT my point is#that sam and chuck are connected by a gun and a gun wound#and this gun wound gets passed down to cas and jack#you know. the parallels and the mirrors etc etc#spn s15#sam winchester#jack kline#castiel#chuck shurley#supernatural#spn meta#spn#*these lies

Cause you are loved, you are loved more than you know
I hereby pledge all of my days to prove it so
Though your heart is far too young to realize
The unimaginable light you hold inside
I'll give you everything I have
I'll teach you everything I know
I promise I'll do better
I will always hold you close
But I will learn to let you go
I promise I'll do better
I will rearrange the stars
Pull 'em down to where you are
I promise I'll do better
With every heartbeat I have left
I'll defend your every breath
I promise I'll do better
I will soften every edges
Hold the world to its best
I promise I'll do better

Very strange to me that the longer supernatural went on, the kinder it was to John Winchester and the uglier it made Chuck.
There’s something very. I don’t know. “Don’t blame your father, your father never did anything wrong. Blame God. Blame this thing that’s been secretly making your life worse this whole time, pulling the strings, controlling you and everyone around you.”
And the further we get into the show, the more Chuck becomes a Writer, rather than it being about God as a Father. (Never completely losing that aspect, obviously, just like Chuck was always a writer, but one of these parallels clearly superceded the other in terms of importance to the story.)
#this isn’t John winchester crit ‘he was a terrible monster we should blame for everything’ post tbc#it’s about how the show lost its teeth about fatherhood right when it needed them most. and it still gives some bangers! but. this big one.#this big one flops for me.#idk maybe its just a side effect of 2/4 of the archangels being dead. Lucifer not being a real character anymore. Michael busy being gay.#like who is Chuck supposed to father figure to here? I mean there’s cas but that was never the same relationship as the archangels to god.#angels to god fatherhood relationship v different. explored in different ways.#and I mean Chuck himself is just a cartoon villain by the end too. there’s v little nuance left in him.#I guess there could have been something with Jack. oh the good spn in my head where Chuck butts into the Jack custody battle.#is this child a threat to him? better make sure he’s loved as The Best Grandad Ever.#there could have been one thing the winchesters & Lucifer could team up/agree about: get Chuck the fuck away from Jack#anyway I digress. just thinking thoughts.#spn#chuck shurley#john winchester

so you know how sometimes Sam and Cas just repeat each others' names? (for example)
what if this scene:
except the last thing Cas tries to say is 'Sam'?
#cas' last word is sam's name and jack's first word five minutes later is calling sam 'father' while looking for cas#y'know??#sastiel
