Oh I got so caught up in Saturday plans I forgot that FINALLY I had a tap (pericardiocentesis) go well at work this month!!
for reference during my three prior taps:
I got so skeezed out by watching the doctor struggle to suck fluid out of the patient with the huge comedy syringe that my ass fainted (it's ok it was at the end of the procedure and I was in training)
The patient was so wiggly that the doctor literally called another higher up doctor and went "do we really need to do this" and they did anyway and I was panicked and sweaty the whole time so when they mega fucked up and punctured the heart with the catheter wire it was like "oh this might as well happen" and the patient had to get rushed to the OR instead OOPS
Got called in not for a tap but for a possible post-tap chest tube readjustment, possibly in the patient's room possibly in the cath lab, and sat around outside for 40 minutes while they frantically gave meds, only to finally get to go in an the end, and when they looked at my ultrasound pics they promptly announced that the patient was dead and they were calling it
This last tap went completely fine, except that the doctor had to stab the patient like four times so it took an hour+, but I didn't have to hold the ultrasound probe so my hand was not near the needle! which helped a lot, I just had to run the machine. Patient was very alert but pleasant, and the worst that happened was that they kept accidentally gently smacking them in the face with the xray arm.
Anyway I didn't realize that they just......... Literally left the drain in with the catheter, which must megasuck.
Patient: I'm uncomfy :(
Doctor: Well you do have a tube literally going into your chest to drain the fluid around your heart into this jar here, and a piece of wire inside the tube that's poking gently at the outside of your heart so, yes, unfortunately you will feel sucky until the fluid is gone :)
Me who has literally never had a tap go normally and therefore never knew this: OvO
This means I'm comfortable enough to be a fully useful member of the lab and not freak out when they (inevitably) send me to go do another tap!!
Now if only I can remember the code for the lead apron storage room!!
#the dragoon diaries#no one died this time it went GREAT#I mean the fainting wasn't really ok I def had a mild concussion and have permanent tinnitus now but you deal#healthcare#medicine#cardiology#like I would think the presence of the wire would further irritate the pericardium and cause more fluid?#but what do I know I'm a fucking sonographer lol#cath lab

RAMP Time Again
February 16, 2019 I got a call today from the pre-op nurse to get instructions for Den’s upcoming RAMP Study. She gave me the list of meds that Den should take before the procedure, where to go for the labs that needed to be drawn that morning and what time to check in at the outpatient desk. February 20, 2019 We are up very early for a very busy day. We left home before the sun came up and I…

So since Jax was from a medicinal place, does he have medical trauma? Or like, did any of the things he was infected with leave lasting damages? Or did he manage to avoid everything? (Also if he was tested on, was any of the books he read a "reward"? Like: "Good job you managed to recover a fair amount from the disease we injected into you! Have this childrens book since you like to read 🥰 " /silly /lhj)
Oh definitely, Jax was easily bribed with candy as well as books since he has a bit of a sweet tooth. He can't run long distances without getting winded and still deals with migraine spells, he was one of the luckier ones!
Some researchers were kind enough to teach him, if anything just to fill the awkward silence that usually came with pumping chemicals into test subjects and observation. Jax was full of angst and rage in his teenage years

What the fuck.
I have thought about Gale endlessly since September and I can count on one hand how many dreams I've had with him.
One... It was one, and it was... Well it was interesting.
But I start having dreams about my very short, outpatient surgery while I take a nap... The first nap I've taken in months.
#fuck you brain#mira rants#the Gale dream was hot though#still unusual#but hot#the surgery dream though?#i was doing intake paperwork#and laughing about it#and trying to tell the hospital to just give my bff all of the instructions bc she works in a cath lab#and then i started obsessing about this guy being on a ladder in the rain#and worrying about his safety#gale dekarios#gale of waterdeep#bg3#bg3 gale#baldur's gate 3#gale#baldur's gate gale#baldurs gate

Literally anyone who knows the patient watching a surgery is 100% a TV-only thing. Some very fancy teaching hospitals might have the observation thing on like 1 or 2 ORs but it would be very strictly for students/staff only. Most of the time the students/staff observe from inside the OR. They don't do that on TV cuz they'd have to be masked and couldn't carry on a long conversation about a different patient or their personal lives to advance the plot. I guess the President could maybe pull strings but yeah we're largely in TVland on this so feel free to imagine whatever explanation makes it most devastating!
Yeah that's what I thought!!! Thank you for confirming!! Like I wasn't sure how common the observation rooms were but I knew that when they did exist they were for other doctors or students, not loved ones of the patient. It's fun for TV though! And you can make some loosey goosey excuses for The West Wing because that hospital was probably mostly cleared out by the Secret Service so it wasn't operating normally and nobody tells the president what to do *saxophone riff*

Nyello! I'm B.L.Radley, also known as @blradley, also known as 'that person who decided to become a radiographer on a whim literally so they could introduce themselves as Rad the Rad but then got really fucking obsessed with radiography and ology and now wants to commit themselves to several more years of specialised study and student debts to become an Advanced Practitioner in.... MRI, probably, but who the heck knows'
Important info:
They/it/xe pronouns plz.
'Rad' on this blog refers ONLY to radiographers and surfer-slang. Transphobes begone.
I am a student.
This means:
I am not an expert! I might be wrong about stuff! If you know more than me, please feel free to correct me! I love this topic and want to learn more!
I am not qualified to give out medical advice, and will only say 'go see your doctor if this concerns you!' on this blog.
It's also worth noting that, though I do work part-time in a hospital, doin' the ol' radiography, I am not going to provide funny/embarrassing patient stories. Or any patient stories at all, beyond, perhaps, very, very anonymised anecdotes to help illustrate points. I strongly disagree with mocking patients or posting anything about them without their consent - particularly if it could be traced back to them! This is just a blog where I can scream excitedly about how cool it is that I can look at all the Mushy And Bony Stuff inside you without cutting you open!
(Although sometimes you'll get cut open too <3 Just for funsies <3)
Please feel free to ask me anything, and I will do my best to reply!
Or, uh. Infodump about my hyperfixation. Not sorry.
