So, a fun thing I recently discovered is that you can do a basic search of the UK censuses up to 1911 for free online: https://ukcensusonline.com/

The information it gives you for free is very limited, just a person, the place at the time of census, age, and sometimes a profession. Most of the professions are as you might expect- "farmer" "domestic servant" "tin miner" and so on- and some of them are outdated as you might expect e.g. "hawker" "stone cutler" etc.

Occasionally there's one that appears to be improperly transcribed, for example I think "daisy worker" is more likely to be "dairy worker", and sometimes there's one that surprises you, for example someone who shares my surname was an "analytical chemist" in 1911, and in 1901 one of my more forward thinking ancestors was an electrical fitter's apprentice.

Occasionally, though, there are occupations that appear to be clear confusion on the part of the census taker- for example I don't think Alice X was a "farmer's son", although if she was, more power to her. Another person is described as a "planning machine" and one simply as "boy". I also enjoy the distinction of "scholar" and "at school" for some of the children.

My most interesting discovery so far is a female university student in 1911!

Anyway, it's been a fun way to spend an afternoon and get a little insight into how some of my ancestors lived!

Finding Frances Collins

After I was able to focus on the proper surname of the wife of Noah Price, I tried to track down her parents. The 1850 Census showed Mary Collins 17, living with Francis Collins (49), James C. Collins (25), & Elizabeth Collins (22). It's an easy assumption that Francis is her mother, with a simple misspelling.

Tracking down from there, I found her in the 1840 Census also as the head of family. As you can see, the 1840 and previous censuses leave a lot to be desired.

In the 1860 Census, the kids have moved out, but instead she moved in with Elizabeth, now going by Olive and married to John Stroop, misspelled here as Strop.

She continues to live with Elizabeth's family in 1870.

The last census record I can track her to is the 1880 Census, where she's living with the now widowed Elizabeth, and Frances listed by the nickname Fannie.

I found Elizabeth's death certificate, which includes her father's name and Frances's maiden name, Gibson.

Taking a step back, I found the online record of marriage between Levi Collins and Frances Gibson. I then tracked down Levi and family in the 1830 Census.

So now I need to track down Gibson's in the 1820 Census. So far, unsuccessfully.

Now I know, Frances Collins was born around 1801 in Pennsylvania. Checking Pennsylvania counties bordering the West Virginia panhandle (Ohio County, VA prior to 1863), I found the Rev. William Gibson in Canonsburg, Washington Co., PA. He was a Presbyterian minister, born in Co. Down, Ireland, with a full biography available online. Sadly, he is not Frances's father. Quick research into the Reverand finds four daughters, none named Frances.

Once again, bedeviled by the absence of the 1890 Census. Frances died sometime after 1880, before 1900. So far there's no Find A Grave entry, but my search will go on.

Conducting a wildlife census is an essential measure to get valuable insights into various factors such as but not limited to current status, population trends, distribution, impact of conservation efforts, climate change, and disease outbreaks.

Similar to the human census, the wildlife census is also conducted at regular intervals and helps us to take necessary steps to protect the species from extinction.

Wildlife Census Methods

The census can be done direct or indirect method. In the direct methods, the individual animals are seen and counted, whereas in the indirect methods, evidence left by the animals such as footprints, poop, etc., are used to estimate the population.

There are other methods such as water hole census, camera traps, satellite tracking, etc., which are used to estimate the population.

Direct Methods

In the direct methods, either all the animals are counted or statistically sampled. In statistical sampling, a random sampling method is used to estimate the population and based on the sample size, the population is calculated.

Indirect Methods

The purpose of indirect methods is to estimate the population based on the evidence left by the animals. The evidence can be footprints, poop, nests, etc. The indirect methods are used when the direct methods are not feasible or too expensive.

Other Methods

Apart from the direct and indirect methods, there are other methods such as water hole census, camera traps, satellite tracking etc. which are used to estimate the population.

Water Hole Census

In the water hole census, the animals are counted by the number of animals visiting the water hole, the assumption being that all the animals visit the water hole at least once a day in summer. It is a simple and effective method to estimate the population of animals.

This means if someone earns Rs. 55 per day, they are not considered poor!

the finance ministry is blind to how much indians actually earn and how much is needed to actually survive- remember, we haven't had the census yet, so no data available.
