Priests in love (/ω\) Roland and Olivier aren't actual priests… I think? but they wear Roman collars 👀 Funny how I didn't care about them when I first read Vanitas no Shuki, but now I can't get over Roland's absolute positive-chaotic personality (❁´◡`❁) and in my head - Olivier can't resist either ♡ crazy how Mochizuki keep making those fictional characters which they were much better if they were queer lol

Five seconds later:
The truth is…
O: He’ll fix that report, right, Astolfo?
A: Yeah!
*Roland crashes down on the floor*
O: And that was fifty one. Congrats, you won.
… the one who gets the child’s vote always wins.

Automaton angel
Tumblr media
#WHAT A CONCEPT#The imagery is soooo good#Anyway I caved. I've read the chapter without further context. I couldn't help it I loved the concepts it played with#Very Rufus the thing the guy with the brooch did at first. The panel of the archivist girl was so Lacie I could have kicked the wall#The play on the significance of names and existence and the role one plays in the world/notions of self I loved as well#And that is so 👀 when later on it's mentioned off-hand that... Olivier is actually named Romeo? Have I understood that well?#It was so cute that little throwback with him and Roland as kids. And that he knew of Astolfo meeting a friend but didn't tell due to that#And wow there was rape everywhere in this chapter? I didn't know Astolfo had been raped. I had heard about his... mother? sister?#But not him. I mean‚ maybe they were victims of sex-rape‚ but the talk about several vampires biting him and drinking his blood#and how the mark never leaves and how dirty and maimed in ever sense he feels sure seems to imply that at least metaphorically#The angel-like being also having gone through that is interesting again in its potential implications and ramifications. The very concept#Anyway... That pretty guy telling Astolfo that he knows what he's going through and recommending him to kill himself#because life is hell from that moment on... Wow he was so real and seemed so... sincere? But who knows. He sure is alive#That + the angel-like figure's words make it so intriguing given his position as chasseur? paladin? whatever the name was#Anyway I loved that he said that in any case#I liked Olivier on the verge of getting violent with the guy who was being a dick too I can't help it. Leave the kid alone#I'm rambling but yeah I loved the concept around this angel-like being both aesthetically and narratively for what we got#I talk too much#I should probably delete this later

Astolfo and revenge
(Something I posted on twitter, that I'll add a bit to)
I don't think the message of Astolfo's story is "vengeance only does more harm than good". It's pointed out multiple times in the manga that vengeance/hatred is what keeps him going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hell, Astolfo is morally opposed to murder, he KNOWS. I genuinely believe he still doesn't want to kill, and only kills because he is stuck in a cycle, realizes this, and is trying to keep others out of it.
"Revenge/murder is bad" it not the lesson he has to learn. I have the theory that his story is about how people keep up discrimination so they can benefit from it.
(1) His family was "an active player in the war against vampires", and I get the feeling that's why the Granatum house is so wealthy. I mean, they had strong ties to the Church, while regularly holding the seat of Garnet. Of course Astolfo's father told him to kill vampires, he needs to be the Garnet Paladin so the family keeps its wealth and status! There's the implication in the manga that the Granatum family (and the Obsidian house) have their status thanks to their participation in the war. Once an institution benefits from something, it won't easily let go of that, no matter how morally apprehensive it is.
(2) Charles wants to make Astolfo the Garnet Paladin so he can become a symbol for the Chasseurs (or at least the vampire eradication faction, and like I said, killing vampires is what gave these people power, so it is very possible the vampire eradication faction is a reflection of that). Charles is building a narrative: "Astolfo Granatum's family was injustly killed by vampires, now he kills to avenge them, therefore he is justified to kill vampires". The weapon of the Garnet Paladin is named "Pillar of Justice". That Astolfo fights for justice is part of the whole act!
(3) I really think Astolfo kept resisting against his fate of "killing vampires". His father gives him the knife and he gets scared, Charles tells him to pick up Louisette and he gets scared...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end, he gives up. His self-hatred, carefully upheld by Charles, is too strong. He has no other options left, especially when Roland leaves him! This proves to me that he only "takes revenge" because he felt like there was nothing else for him left. I really want to emphasize the "he gave up his struggle" here.
So, I came to a conclusion that surprised me at first! "Hatred isn't automatically bad, preying on that hatred to push an agenda is bad". Astolfo is a victim of the institution he works for. That is the message, I believe.
I think that theme will be addressed in the current dham arc as well. So far it seems it's building towards it, with the whole scene of Vanitas explaining to Noé how discrimination works.

This is a small thing, but I do really enjoy that we've now gotten confirmation that Roland grew up poor, since it adds an interesting dimension to his relationship to the rest of the church.
The chasseurs aren't just militant religious extremists. By and large, they're wealthy and insular militant religious extremists. The lower level chassuers most likely come from a wider base, but among the paladins, coming from established chasseur families seems to be quite common. Astolfo comes from a line of paladins, Olivier seemingly did as well, and though we don't know anything about Gano's family, he apparently grew up comfortable enough to belittle Roland for being poor.
And like, of course this is the case. Of course the violent hateful Catholics are a group full of generational wealth and classism. Of course the anti-vampire extremists were raised in whole families of anti-vampire extremists.
And by the same token, of course the paladin most willing to question what he's been told about vampires is the paladin that comes from outside their insular ranks. Roland is a chasseur because wants to help people, and if Gano is to be believed, he's also in it for the money. Hunting vampires is a job that Roland genuinely believes in, but at the end of the day, it's a job. It's a field he chose to enter into. He doesn't define himself entirely by his occupation of vampire hunter.
It's always going to be easier to brainwash someone if that brainwashing is what they've known for their entire life. Of course the outsider perspective comes from the paladin that's the biggest outsider in other ways. And of course someone that's been looked down upon by society is more receptive to questioning societal presumptions about evil.
None of this is revolutionary, but it's very fitting, and I'm pleased to have it confirmed.

AHHHHHH! NEW CASE STUDY OF VANITAS CHAPTER! ITS BACK!
Oh yeah that's right we were in the midst of this Dham arc.
Well time for some all too relatable pain as Dante and Johann have to deal with being questioned and assaulted by THE LITERAL CHURCH
The chapter was really good. Like, it fucking hurt to read, but it was so good. Having dealt with mostly just Roland the human Golden Retriever and Olivier his dog-handler, and of course everyone's favorite traumatized murder baby Astolfo, it was different to see these Chaseurs as the cold and calculating killers they are. It wasn't over the top, it was simple "We are gonna hurt you and maybe kill you cause we can, whether you tell us what we want to know is irrelevant. No one here will stop us, and as long as no one knows, we won't get in any trouble for it."
Like, "Oh yeah, these guys ARE terrifying assholes, I forgot."
But the dialogue about the Dhams really hits this chapter.
"They're a real eyesore"
"They dress like they're advertising themselves as Dhams"
"Dhams should make like Dhams and live in the shadows, holding their breath"
And then Dante's internal thoughts, the fleeting hope that someone will come to help,
"Who exactly is someone"
"Who'd show up for us?"
"This world treats us like it can't even see us."
And he goes for the gun in his jacket... God it fucking hits. I say it every time, but so much dialogue in this manga can just have the names of things and people swapped out and you could believe it applies to so many marginalized groups. It feels more authentic than a lot of manga and stories I read. Don't know why. That's just probably my queer ass reading too much into these chapters as my own experiences, but fuck. I won't lie that I felt the connection with Dante keeping his gun in the same inner jacket pocket I keep my knife in my jacket. The same jacket with pins that people say I'm "advertising as queer" with. Johann fucking pleading for Dante not to draw his gun cause he knows his partner is gonna die if he tries. That these church goons are looking for an excuse to pin them as the aggressors so they can execute them.
And right as shit is about to happen, Domi shows up. DOMI!!!!!!!
Perfect way for Domi to start making up for her casual prejudice against Dante and Johann earlier. Domi sticks her neck out for them, against 2 FUCKING CHASSEUR PALADINS OF THE CHURCH! Like, yeah Domi is fucking awesome and powerful and an influential vampire noble, but 2 Paladins? They could kill her if things go wrong. But my girl is still here sticking her neck out for Dante and Johann. Congrats Domi, you have a chance to use your Vampire noble privilege to finally be the Dham ally you thought you were.
I love it. I love this manga so much.

Chasseur Trinity Timeline
Tumblr media
Hello there, I'm back with my timelines because I need everything to be in order XD
Since this time I didn't wrote a lot of things in the timeline, I will explain my points below (anyways, if after reading it you have some question, don't doubt and tell me):
First of all, we know that in present day Olivier is 27 y.o and Roland is 26 y.o thanks an old Omake (I don't have it rn, sorry).
1) Roland and Olivier met:
I don't know if they are around 8, 10, 12 or more so I used a big period of time in which they could have started meeting.
2) Roland and Olivier arrived Paris:
Tumblr media
This is when they started they training as Chasseurs and we got some information:
Olivier hairstyle was different.
They were late teens or young adults here.
Roland was covered in bandages (for training or a mision).
Side note: importance of Roland's scars.
Roland's scars were what I used to organise the events between they met and when Astolfo lost his family:
Tumblr media
As a kid, he didn't have any scar so we know this is something he got as a Chasseur.
(image from 46.5 of Roland covered in bandages)
When he started training he was covered in bandages so we can't tell if he got his scars here or not. But anyways, this is the nearest event to him and Olivier meeting because it's when they started the training XD
(image of Roland and Misha in memoire 47. Roland has right arm broken and is fully covered in bandages again)
When he met Misha after a nearly death experience, Roland was totally covered again + and eye patch (here is when I think he got the injuries that become his scars).
This event can be near to when they started training, but it can't be near the time Astolfo met Roland because in that moment Roland and Olivier were full recovered.
+ I don't think this happened after rescuing Astolfo because basically, taking care of Astolfo became 24/7 Roland's job.
Tumblr media
And finally here we are able to see his scars. It's near to when they rescued Astolfo so that's other point to think he got all of that before Roland and Astolfo met.
(imagine is yellow) 3) When Olivier planned to leave the Chasseurs a.k.a. When Roland met Misha:
Tumblr media
Back to the timeline, as I explained with Roland's scars, this has to be before rescuing Astolfo.
And again, this event can be near to when they started training, but it can't be near to when they rescued Astolfo because both Roland and Olivier had their arms broken. And depending what it's broken you need around 2 months or more to use it normally again (maybe the Chasseurs have drugs to make it shorter, but I will ignore that).
4) Olivier and Astolfo met:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can't really know if this was the first time they see each other or even if this 2 panels are from the same day, but there are 2 important things to note:
Olivier wasn't a Paladin yet.
Astolfo already know the vampire.
5) The doomed day:
Tumblr media
Between the previous event to this one there shouldn't be much time and, since Astolfo wears the exact same suit, I could even tell it was that same night. But kids can use the same clothes in different days so it can be more time between these events.
Side note 2: UwU I killed.
Tumblr media
Since Astolfo wasn't a Paladin here and he is really similar to the present day, I think this happened around a year ago because Astolfo became Paladin at 15 and he is still 15 y.o.
6) Present day:
Tumblr media
It's still 1888 because Astolfo's birthday is 6th January (basically, first day of 1889) and since he still 15, they are probably at the end of 1888.
Here both Roland and Astolfo are Paladins, but Astolfo ascended time before Roland.
.
.
.
And that's all, thanks for reading my mucho texto.

-------------------------------------
"Charles understands: everything turned out right.
There is a chasseur in front of him who has nothing left. There is nobody close to him whom he could trust and rely on — Olivier steps back at the very beginning, Roland breaks their connection with his own hands, and it will not be possible to trust Marco again after everything. No love and support that could stop and prevent the irreparable. No hope for the best."
"His perfect paladin" (Ukrainian)
Before the chapters 58-59 I thought Astolfo would die in the fight with Gano. Now I think he will become a victim of Charles manipulations. He's too young, lonely and broken to confront Charles — and there is nobody around who could protect and save him.

Ahhh!! I'm so happy to see someone that writes for Vanitas!!
Could I request Noé, Olivier and Vanitas with a female toxicologist s/o who weaponizes and is immune to poison?
Noé
“What’s that?”
“Foxglove.” [Y/N] replied at Noé’s question. “It can be used to cause cardiac failure in targets.”
“What’s this?”
“Jimson weed.” She replied as he moved on to a new plant, as she on to tending to another. “It…makes people not act themselves.” Hallucinate. Badly. More of a deterrent than some of her more deadly toxins.
“What’s this?”
“Don’t touch that!”
Noé snapped his hand back when [Y/N] shouted at him. Startled at her outbursts. “I’m sorry. But that’s nightshade.” She came over to brush haunting purple blooms. Like one might stroke a cat. “It’s very deadly, and dangerous. Helena is probably my most vicious girl in here. She only likes me.”
“You named your plants?”
“Don’t you name your pets?”
Noé shrugged and went to look at a less deadly arrangement. “It’s sad in a way that something so beautiful can hurt people.”
“Beautiful things often do.”
He glanced over at [Y/N], and had to agree on that. “Don’t you ever think of using your powers for good? Like making medicine or something, rather than poisons.”
[Y/N] gave a soft, bitter laugh. “There’s no money in medicine. Besides, my…gift is only for ones that bite back, it seems.” Méchante Glycine, or Wicked Wisteria, gave her the ability to expertly grow plants & greenery, but only of the poisonous sort. It also granted her an immunity to them and other poisons as a precautionary note to the wielder.
“Well, I still think they’re pretty. Even if I can’t touch them.”
“I’m sure they appreciate that Noé.” [Y/N] said with a smile. To which he returned.
“Shall we head upstairs for tea?”
“Of course. Just let me wash my hands. Don’t want to accidently get jimson weed cross contaminated in anyone’s tea. Or it would be a very interesting afternoon.” Noé tilted his head in confusion. Not seeming to get the joke.
[Y/N] quickly washed her hands and bid adieu to her garden for the evening. The leaves seeming to rustle back in farewell. Waiting for their master, and to be of use.
Olivier
His boots were heavy on the steps as he headed into the basement towards the research labs. The dark corridor lit only by torches, before it opened up to the shining ward of electric light powering the Chasseurs scientific backbone of weaponry.
“Ms. [Y/N]
“Oh, hello Olivier.” [Y/N] greeted cheerfully. “I’m surprised to see you. Mira isn’t here.”
“I had planned it that way.” He replied. Shuttering a little as he remembered their last encounter. “I hope I’m not disturbing you.”
“Certainly not. Just wrapping these up.” She sat the last vial down in the tube tray and put it aside. “It’s a new serum. With this new strength cocktail it should be able to paralyze even the strongest of vampires briefly. Completely incapacitate the weaker ones.”
“Remarkable.” Olivier complimented. Although not looking at the new bluish colored weapon at his disposable. “Your hard work is appreciated Ms. [Y/N]. I know it must be challenging working down here in the dark. With some of your….colleagues.” He mentally shuttered again.
The toxicologist giggled. “They’re not so bad. The science sort are always a little odd. You have to be to make things out of the norm. Then again, the micro-dosing from our own concoctions probably doesn’t help.” It was Olivier’s turn to laugh. If only once.
“Perhaps…you could come out into the field for a time. To get better notes for your research. I would escort you, of course.”
“I fear I would be murder on the battlefield. No pun intended.” [Y/N] replied in response to his offer. “I’m much better with plants and books.”
“Then, perhaps, we could go get some of those.” The paladin was blushing now. Trying to not seem too forward, but not wanting to be too subtle either. He was terrible at these dances.
[Y/N] looked up from her work with a puzzled look. “You want to go out with me?” Olivier’s face took on a stricken look and went quite pale. “Ok.”
He was taken aback by her readily offered reply. Expecting more of a back and forth. Thrust and parry.
“When shall we go? I could use some more nightshade and sodium chlorate. Shall we go tomorrow?”
“I uh…yes. That..should be fine.”
“Great!” [Y/N] said with a bright smile, before returning to her work. “Come by after dinner and we’ll head out. I’ll make sure Mira is busy so she doesn’t catch you.”
“I….thank you. I will….see you tomorrow then.”
The paladin left. Feeling on odd mix of very accomplished, and as if he hadn’t accomplished anything at all. The mission was accomplished at least. Until tomorrow that is.
Vanitas
Vanitas hissed as pain shot up his arm again. Nursing it at his side.
That last curse bearer had been pretty rough on him. Strong for a human body, it was still pretty fragile in comparison to the might of a raging, rouge vampire.
“Here. This will help.” [Y/N] offered as she came into the room with clean towels, and a bottle of clear liquid in an amber jar.
“I don’t want it.”
The woman scrunched her mouth as she sat next to him. “Honestly. For someone who claims to be a ‘doctor’, you’re certainly untrusting of medicines.”
“I’ve had my share of strange brews shoved down my throat for a lifetime. Thanks.”
[Y/N] sighed and went to mending his arm manually. Of course, she knew that. Their experience with the church hadn’t been the same. Dr. Moreau had not been interested in female test subjects charges. Deciding that their bodies would be too naturally frail for the torture strenuous work is experiments allowed. She didn’t receive the physical torture Vanitas did, but the mental torture was still there. Along with his education on anatomy, medicines, and chemicals.
“I would never hurt you Vanitas. It’s just something to take the edge off.”
“I’d rather have a whiskey.” He joked.
“You don’t drink alcohol.” He flinched painfully as [Y/N] dabbed raw alcohol onto his cuts. “I know you don’t trust me. Or why I’m here.”
Vanitas looked up at his physician. Never having said that, but not denying it was true. “I’m not some spy, or malfeasance sent to bring you back to the order. I just want to help. What’s going on….I have no great love for vampires. After what they did to my family. But the more of them that go mad, the more people will be hurt in the end. The enemy of my enemy and all that.”
She tied off the last bandage and stood. “Will you be able to sleep?”
Vanitas still just looked at her. Then took the bottle from her hand and chugged it down. “Now, yeah.” He said before rolling over to lay on his side, in his cloak and all, to go to sleep.
[Y/N] offered him a small smile, then leaned over to give Vanitas a soft kiss on the hair. “Goodnight, No. 69.”
“Goodnight 70.”

VANITAS NO CARTE SPOILERS AHEAD
Tumblr media
So, basing on the Orlando Furioso, work written by Ludovico Ariosto in 1516 and clear source of inspiration for Mochizuki, the Paladins of the Christian Army are twelve and their names are:
Orlando (Roland)
Olivieri or Oliviero
Astolfo
Ogier the Danish
Rinaldo, cousin of Roland and Astolfo
Florismart, friend of Roland
Guido of Borgogna
Naimon/Namo, councilor of Charles Magne
Otuel, a Saracen who converted to Christianity
Malagigi, a necromancer, cousin of Rinaldo
Fierabras/Ferumbras, a Saracen converted like Otuel
Gano of Maganza
In the last chapter Charles Magne appeared and he introduced himself as the First Paladin (he brings the diamond gem), so it is possible that a Paladin will be absent or called upon to replace one of the others; and also I would say, like I did one time, that the two Saracen paladins become Christians in the Orlando Furioso, in the VNC could be vampires. And so, for what we know at this point, prepare ourselves to see a possible, terrible and bloody war among the Chasseurs, and the Paladins themselves.
For now, the Paladins appeared are:
Roland
Olivier
Astolfo
Gano
Charles Magne
Ogier
Only mentioned:
Rinaldo

Hi guys its me, I was waiting like two years for this moment ಥ‿ಥ
Let's talk about this man
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's all just a theory (but I really want it to be true) and at this moment, my apologies, I can barely speak english
Okay so my theory is that, that he is Rinaldo. Most of you probably first time hear about him, so let me explain
Tumblr media
This is Rinaldo, he was in the manga but only in physical version so I don't have good english translation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We don't see his face here but we can know that he is one of the paladins. Each paladin has a special piece of armor on their hands, common Chasseurs have a normal one
I'm sure Rinaldo is not good Chasseur, I'm quite sure he works with Gano. Because of the fact, that he manipulated Roland's feelings into not looking for Misha but also because of looking at Chanson de Geste, where Rinaldo was Gano cousin and opponent of Charlemagne... There is also my another theory, because in Girart de Vienne we learn that Olivier is also their cousin and his uncle Girart fought against Charlemagne. I know its crazy to think that Olivier is by Gano side... But sometimes I look at his eyes when Roland act like he knows something...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was supposed to be about Rinaldo lol
I could talk about it for hours but I've lost the point so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I really hope that he is Rinaldo or at least that we'll finally see him... Oh I also hope that we'll get their other cousins, twins, Maugis and Vivien
