Tout va bien... (sic !)

Ces mots vous font sourire ? Ils ne sont pas de moi, vous vous en doutez. Il s'agit d'un cocktail savamment dosé de bouts de phrases empruntés à des discours récents de Darmanin, de Lemaire et de Macron (tous les autres, y compris notre sinistre première ministresse en titre, sont tellement transparents, inexistants et ectoplasmiques que personne ne sait même comment ils s'appellent, ce qui n'est pas grave : ils sont là pour faire foule, pour faire croire aux naïfs, impressionnés par leur nombre, qu'il y aurait un équipage dans l'avion... On découvre parfois leur nom... lorsqu'ils démissionnent ou sont démissionnés pour faute grave –mais jamais pour cause de nullité profonde : en Macronie, ''être nul'' n'est pas un péché !

Cela dit, permettez-moi d'ouvrir ce ''billet'' sur deux historiettes qui me sont tout-à-fait ''perso'', mais qui ont un lien –pour le moment encore, invisible-- avec notre sujet, on le verra plus tard. La première est musicale : il se trouve que, par le plus pur hasard, je me suis retrouvé récemment ''travaillant'' au piano (et au chant) la merveilleuse chanson de Jacques Brel ''L'inaccessible étoile'' (NDLR - je m'imagine, dans mes rêves, que si les airs que je travaille sont beaux, le résultat le sera aussi... mais en y repensant, je doute que mes voisins partagent cet optimisme !). La seconde est plutôt professionnelle : il y a très longtemps, directeur général des magasins ''Nouvelles Galeries'', il m'arrivait, dans mon désir/besoin de visiter le plus possible des 187 grands magasins que je dirigeais, de foncer dans le brouillard et malgré lui, en sachant que je ne contrôlais rien et surtout pas mon destin immédiat ! (NDLR 2 : je frémis encore au souvenir d'un Paris-Arras-Amiens un 31 décembre, avec 2 mètres de visibilité, par –3° : je m'étonne d'être encore là pour en parler !)

Mais pour le moment, le sujet qui doit obligatoirement nous passionner, c'est la réforme des retraites. Impossible d'y échapper, bene volens, male volens : c'est cet après-midi, mardi 10, qu'on nous ouvre le pot-aux-roses, alors que non seulement personne ne peut dire à ce jour de quoi il s'agit et si c'est tout bon, tout mauvais, ou... tout les deux, mais qu'il est évident qu'aucun membre du gouvernement ne le sait, non plus. Jusqu'au sommet de l'Etat, il n'y a pas un seul clampin (ou ''pas une seule clampine'', pour être c...idiot comme le maire de Pantin et de Gauche qui a ''con-cocté'' le borborygme ''pantine'' pour avoir l'air féministe. NB : On attend avec impatience la réaction des maires de Mâcon et de Juan les Pins, entre autres !), et pas un seul de nos génies ès-nullitude qui puisse nous expliquer le pourquoi et le comment de ce changement présenté comme un progrès... pas plus que les (trop) nombreuses marches arrière stratégiques (ou pas !) qui étonnent tous ceux qui s'imaginent encore, contre toute expérience, qu'il y aurait une direction générale derrière cette opacité qui mélange ''être sérieux'' et ''se donner un air sérieux''.

Le peu qu'on sait, le peu qui ''a fuité'', intentionnellement ou pas, sur cette réforme, pose plus de questions qu'il ne fournit de réponses, alors que le texte dit définitif est déposé et présenté ce jourd'hui. Par exemple : cette ‘’réforme-là’’ est-elle vraiment inévitable, obligatoire, incontournable et urgente, et si ''Oui'', pourquoi (les avis sont, pour le moins, partagés !) ? A quoi va-t-elle servir ? Qui va-t-elle concerner, et qui ''pas''... et à partir de quand ? La Loi est censée être votée dans les heures et les jours qui viennent, mais ''on'' consulte, pour pouvoir dire qu'on va en retirer ce qu'on y remettra en douce : la seule chose qui compte est de savoir qui va la voter, ''c'te p... de Loi'', et ce qu'en pense le pauvre Eric Ciotti, projeté dans un double rôle drôle d’intermittent du spectacle et de variable d'ajustement qu'il n'avait pas prévu.

Je trouve cette péripétie tout simplement magnifique, car on commence de fait à se rapprocher pour de bon d'un chef d’œuvre à l'état pur, du prototype de tout ce qui ne se fait pas, d'une quintessence de brouillon d'épure, de la perfection en matière de sacs de nœuds indémerdables, d'un OVNI --Objet à Voter (mais) Non Identifié-- contre qui chacun se dresse avec des raisons opposées à son voisin... mise à part la constatation morose que, comme tout ce qui est issu de la mitterrandie, le départ en retraite à 60 ans a été une des plus grandes fautes de l'histoire, un paroxysme de ''tout ce qu'il fallait éviter à n'importe quel prix''. On retrouve, dans ce pseudo- psychodrame, la double dépendance, dans le genre du ''je t'aime... moi non plus'', qu'ont les français pour l'Etat qu'ils adorent critiquer... tout en attendant tout, de lui !

Et pourtant... on en est arrivé, dans l'échelle de l'absurde, à un point tel qu'il serait dommage de s'arrêter en si bon chemin... ne serait-ce que pour déplorer jusqu'où l'ignorance peut faire dégringoler un pays (le seul risque serait d'accélérer un peu la chute !)... ou jusqu'où de mauvaises analyses et des conclusions encore plus mauvaises peuvent dresser un pays contre lui-même. Comme le disait il y a peu et si poétiquement notre président dans ses vœux, ''Unis, nous vaincrons'', la question suivante étant alors : ''unis'', ça veut dire quoi, pour lui ? ''Se foutre sur la gueule'' ?

En ces heures graves où, dans le Donbass, se prépare sous nos yeux une réédition motorisée de la retraite de Russie --sans qu'on puisse savoir, dans les torrents de désinformation qui nous emportent vers une fin absurde, qui va retraiter et dans quel sens--... il est permis de se demander si nos politicards, comme fascinés par la résistible ascension d'Arturo Ui –en version ''2-0'', c'est l’espèce de starification de Zélensky--, ne vont pas tous se mettre à vouloir leur propre ''retraite de Russie'', pour recevoir des milliards. Pour ma part, je profite de la situation pour me payer un coup de jeunesse en forme de ''retour sur images'', la situation du monde me faisant irrésistiblement penser à ce jour, raconté plus haut, où je fonçais sur une route dans le brouillard, sans rien voir, ce qui semble le passe-temps exclusif des ''leaders'' occidentaux. Ou alors... dans ma quête persistante d'une ''inaccessible étoile''... qui occupe, en ce moment, ma retraite, sauf que moi, c'est ''en chanson'' --eux, c'est contre un Poutine prêt à pas mal de choses, semble-t-il... Finalement, à travers mes souvenirs, je pourrais presque comprendre le quotidien de Macron : poursuivre des chimères dans la purée de pois ! Il faudra que je cherche et trouve pour quelles raisons ''ça accroche'', avec lui... au point de ne vraiment pas du tout accrocher !

A propos... Vous même, sincèrement... êtes-vous pour ou contre ce qu'on désigne par ''la réforme des retraites'' (NB : ce qui ne veut pas du tout dire ''résoudre à tout jamais un problème récurrent, mais signifie exclusivement ''montrer à l'Europe qu'on la suit dans ses folies'', à travers non pas une solution, mais à travers cette seule réforme-là, qui ne coche que les cases requises par la grosse ''Commission'' bruxelloise) ? Et si ''Oui'' ou ''Non''... pour quelles raisons précises ? Réponse dans un, trois ou six mois... ou bien dans la rue, très vite : le chaos, le bordel... ou pas !

TW: child neglect, familial loss, mentions of mental health

the eldest by a handful of months, weston grew up trying to be everything his little siblings needed. their parents are twisted but he would learn to see them1 through rose-colored glasses instead of living in pain. when his siblings fell, he felt it, too, & when they cried, weston was the shoulder to lean on. it’s too much responsibility. his parents fed and clothed them, but he held their mental health in his hands and the truth is he was no better. weston just got so good at hiding behind this mask that he couldn’t seem to tell the difference between himself & party favor anymore, and the fact of the matter is that while weston was quiet and just so different in a way that his parents feared he would be, he blended in like a chameleon.

he was class president & prom royal. that’s the way it’s always been. but all the academic strivings and kodak ready smiles in the world can’t hide the fact that weston was no better. the older he got, the more they could see. his grandmother, first. then his little brother’s best friend. his first love. everything he tried to hide sits in his lap & wes tried to wrestle it into submission and but sometimes it won. they know him but he doesn’t. his eyes flashed golden sometimes when he’s mad enough that he remembers that he’s the one who put the burn stains on the wood floors of his family’s old home, but he’s more human than anyone can ever even imagine.

he was angry in a way they couldn’t be. he liked classical music at prolific volumes and he liked driving his car too fast and wes liked making people regret believing in him. his mother scoffs. says he’s just like his grandmother who she moved countries to get away from, who drank vodka like orange juice, who never could stand the way her daughter liked to lie to herself. his father glances away. asks weston to please turn that down, or please show your ‘ friend ‘ out, or to please stop ruining dinner. when he’s home alone again at age eighteen wes makes them regret treating him like this. and when he’s nineteen when they leave the keys to the porsche in his eyesight. and when he’s twenty-one and him and jaime can’t even make it up the steps to the front door because you’re so wasted new years eve. wes can be angry and vicious and that made him really fucking happy in a way that nothing else does.

but, when his father passes, reality grips wes with a frightening stillness. while his siblings are inducted into the family business and take the helm of the restaurant, wes packed his life away into cardboard boxes and leaves washington for the first time in his life. his first taste of true freedom. freedom, as it turned out, felt an awful lot like being confined as well, as weston shackled himself to shitty jobs to keep a steady flow of money coming in, living in leaky flats with shitty roommates and eating a lot of humble pie as he figured himself out. eventually, he finds his own current and instead of cleaning dishes, he prods the idea that had always lingered in the back of his mind: culinary school. he’d never been the best cook, jaime had bested him at that, but it was something weston could apply himself to, so he latched on.

for the first time in many, many years, weston allows himself to follow through and with this new career set into motion, he took the plunge and quit his day-job the moment that first soux chef check landed in his palms. he spends the next few years embracing this one true freedom — falling in love with girl who he didn’t deserve once, twice, maybe three times, studying things that truly enthralled him, and establishing himself in the culinary field. swiftly rising from soux to executive chef, his name becoming synonymous with splashy ‘chefs to watch for’ writeups and running a world class line staff. though, weston stills for just a moment long enough for life to pass him by at a frightening pace. within the span of a few months he was awarded the james beard foundation award and in the same span, lost his younger and only brother, jaime. as it turns out, old habits thought to be deaded a decade ago have an odd habit of rearing their heads when least needed and so the cycle reinvents itself and lurches onward.

and it’s like being guilty for a crime he hadn’t committed because while weston was innocent in the larger scheme of things, he cannot help but to think that it should have been him. if anyone could bare the weight of the world, let alone keep the family business afloat, it could have been weston. not jaime. jaime should have been the one living his life, and instead he took his father’s place while wes indulged in god knows who or what for the past decade. for now, weston is back in town, picking up where jaime left off: cooking up good food, repaying back a debt he didn’t take out, and trying his very best not to think of all the unpleasant things.

31st July, 1794

Since it is Moncey’s birthday at this time of the year, I thought it would be interesting to present how he spent his birthday at another point in his life. As Col. Ramsay Weston Phipps supplies in Vol. 3 of his Armies of the First French Republic, 228 years ago to this date, on his 40th birthday, Moncey was engaged in operations in the Baztan Valley on the Spanish frontier, as part of the Armée des Pyrenées-Occidentales, or the Army of the Western Pyrenees. At that time, he had recently been promoted to general de brigade due to his actions at the Battle of Sans Culottes Camp (which was the actual name of the French camp), an affair which Phipps describes as thus:

[On the 5th of February, 1794,] Lieut.-Colonel [or chef de bataillon] Moncey had been ill for a fortnight and intended to go back to Bayonne next day. This morning he was in bed, having taken an emetic, when he heard the noise of the attack. Hastening to his men, weak as he was, he remained on the field until he had seen the withdrawal of the enemy. For this the Representatives, making him skip a rank, on the 18th February 1794 promoted him General of Brigade, basing this not only on his conduct at Château-Pignon on the 6th June 1793 and by Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the 23rd July, and this last affair, but also on the attachment of his comrades for him. (vol. 3, p. 150.)

From the above, Moncey seems to have been held in esteem for his conduct and person since the Revolutionary days, and that would not change throughout the Empire and Restoration. His superiors’ trust in him was further evidenced when Moncey’s commander-in-chief Jacques Muller ordered him to assault the Baztan Valley in late July 1794.

It is significant of the regard in which Moncey was already held, that he, only recently promoted, was sent to the right to command the strongest column and the one which was to deal the first and most important blow. Whilst Mauco and Marbot kept the enemy in Roncesvalles in check, three columns were formed to seize the Baztan valley, and then marching westwards to roll up the Spanish line on the Bidassoa. On the night of the 24th July Moncey with some 10,000 men (13 battalions and 800 horse) began his march, and coming over the Col de Maya he next day seized the Baztan valley, where his troops enjoyed the sight of the rich country they had reached. […] On the 27th July, while Robespierre was being overthrown, Moncey started from Elizondo in the Baztan valley with 6,000 men and, marching for thirty-two hours by the difficult Echalar (or Atchiola) road across the mountains, he joined Delaborde at Lesaca, whence the two, 12,000 strong, marched west to support the attack of the right column from Hendaye and the mouth of the Bidassoa. It was intended that, when Moncey and Delaborde should arrive, Frègeville with the right column (6,000 men) should cross the river and attack the fortified camp of San Martial, which covered Irun. Frègeville, however, not knowing that Moncey had been delayed in his mountain march, advanced on the 1st August. Then the Spaniards, aware that Moncey and Delaborde were now in their rear, blew up their works and retired with heavy loss. This caused the surrender of the virgin fortress of Fuenterrabia. (vol. 3, pp. 186-187.)

The event in itself is not of as much interest as what can be read between the lines. Moncey spent his 40th birthday 'toughing it out' on rough mountain roads—barren terrain unlikely to provide more for a meal than the rations brought with him, and more for comfort than the clothes on his back, neither of which could have amounted to much in the first place with the army’s poor supplies. There was precious little a way to celebrate anything aside from doing so verbally, or perhaps draining a last reserve of alcohol, and likely that birthday went unacknowledged in the midst of operations. When slotting such an insignificant moment into the two decades of constant wars of the Revolution and the Empire, one begins to wonder how many Marshals and generals spent their birthdays in warzones, how many of those birthdays were celebrated, or, if lost in the throes of campaigns, they remembered their birthdays at all. And, with all the soldiers that constituted Napoleon's Grand Army, one wonders how they commemorated their birthdays in war, if they ever did; how many lost a comrade around or during an anniversary, how many had larger historical events dwarf their own birthdays—and how many lost their lives just before they were to gain another year of it.

The Moncey of 1794, of course, would get to live for many years longer. In the next few days, he would go on to finish off the business along the Baztan Valley, unhinging the Spanish defensive position along the frontier:

[W]hile Delaborde and Frègeville were sent south along the Madrid road to Hernani, Moncey moved on across their rear, still westwards, for San Sebastian. This fortress was held by some 1,700 men, but Moncey sent Captain La Tour d'Auvergne to harangue the commandant: his eloquence was successful, and the garrison laid down their arms on the 4th August. Next day Frègeville occupied Tolosa. Besides a mass of prisoners the French had taken all the park of the enemy. It was a fine victory …. (vol. 3, pp. 187.)

And a fine (if late) present for a military man’s birthday, one hopes.
