He's here! Last week I prepared the 30th anniversary Yasuhiro Imagawa redesign of Gundam Rose, and now it's time for the next one in the series, Maxter.

Just like Rose, this kit is really well designed, with a streamlined parts count (only 8 sprues) and limited colour correcting stickers. Unfortunately it's not perfect, requiring a few stickers on the Core Booster, but otherwise it's totally colour accurate just from the parts.

This kit comes with a lot of extras, including two open fists, two closed fists, and two open hands, the gigantic magnums, removable "gloves" on the shoulders, the shield/surfboard, and just like the Rose, an action base 5, this time in red. It also has a removable core booster groundcar, which has a really nice reflective green cockpit.

Maxter has significantly more gimmicks than Rose. The fighting knuckles are articulated and can flip forward over the hands. The gigantic magnums can attach to the thighs, or slot in easily to the open fist hand options.

The boxing glove shoulder armour detaches and clips onto the forearm, transforming the suit into boxing mode. The chest piece also detaches for this mode, revealing a muscle detail underneath.

Extra parts are included that allow the feet to be secured to the surfboard/shield, and a handle also flips out to allow it to be held in shield mode. There's a 3mm hole behind the green metallic piece in the shield that allows it to be attached to the included action base.

Boxing mode can be enhanced by all of the extra armour bursting off. This is achieved with a series of extra trans red pieces for the action base, holding armour from the ankles, knees, and front skirt, as well as the aforementioned chest piece.

Also included is a purple punch effect to recreate the Gounetsu Machine Gun Punch from the latter half of G-Gundam. This clips onto the fighting knuckles.

Overall this was a really fun kit to build, and I loved messing around with the gimmicks for photos. The tolerances are really good, with no loose or floppy parts, and the colors are super vibrant.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the Shuffle Alliance being released!

Smoking habits of the Gundam Fighters

Chibodee: Will sometimes celebrate his victories (in the boxing ring or in the Gundam Fight) with a fat cigar.

George: Occasionally indulges in a cigarette, but always politely puts it out when Maria Louise enters the room.

Sai Saici: Snuck a carton of cigarettes into the temple once just to try it, was thoroughly scolded by Zuizen and Keiun when they found him teary-eyed and coughing. At this rate, the revival of the Shaolin temple etc.

Argo: Used cigarettes as currency while in prison. Nastasha will sometimes let him smoke one as a reward.

Domon: Probably not a smoker, since Master Asia would have taught him to be pure of body, etc. But if he does smoke, Rain won't let him anywhere the Gundam while doing it.

Allenby: Doesn't smoke, but has a tin of snus in her vest pocket, and will often enjoy an after-meal "prilla". Holbein and Belliman do not approve of this habit.

I suspect it's because while Sai and Domon are matched in battle, Sai very much sees Domon as an older brother figure outside of battle.

To Sai, Domon is the cool older kid who will protect you from ghosts and take the fall for your shit, whom hanging out with makes you cooler by proxy, and the fact that Domon is also in the gundam fight is extremely secondary to that.

Sai had largely decided what their relationship would be before they even fought, and seeking the attention and care of Domon in non-fighting matters probably interferes with the perception of Domon as a rival.

I think part of the equation too is that Domon and Chibodee approached each other in competition from the beginning, and then decided they liked each other, while Sai had a couple days to get to know Domon before introducing that.

In that way, the dynamic established by first impressions greatly influences the nature of the subsequent relationship, despite how closely Sai and Domon are matched.

Additionally, Sai more or less grew up in a stagnating temple with a bunch of old monks. He would likely not have had many chances to form friendships with either kids his own age or someone who's just enough older to be really cool.

Sai probably treats Domon as more a chum than a rival because he needs the former more than the latter more, whereas Chibodee would have been likely to at least have the chance make friends with some other unfortunate homeless kids growing up (not to mention his current situation with the 'Gals), and serves to grow the most through the classic "rival" relationship he develops with Domon.

Something recently occurred to me. Sai is the only one to force Domon to a draw, yet it's Chibodee that the narrative frames as Domon's "destined rival".

I wonder if it's an attitude thing, like Sai and Domon are straight up evenly matched, but there's more of a back and forth where Chibodee and Domon, for whatever reason, inspire each other to sharpen their skills? (That seems to be the way Schwarz saw it, anyway.) And now I kind of wonder why that is.

There's also Allenby, but she's less of a rival and more... Drift compatible? And of course Schwarz positioned himself as a rival, but they were very mismatched before he forced Domon to level up.
