Christmas in Quarantine

New Story! FFN and AO3

Quarantine has a way of making us want to have the best things in life, the things we can't have now. For Harry and Ginny, this involves hauling out the holy, playing carols, holiday treats, and a little of Christmas, right this very minute. Modern Muggle AU.

This little story was requested and prompted by several wonderful people on Tumblr. @gryffindormischief named the fic and wanted it written for Hinny. @petals-to-fish (who put up so many wonderful fics in one day for all of us and it really was Christmas) wanted to see a snowball fight, baking cookies, and mistletoe kissing. @inakindofdaydream (who adores Christmas after my own heart) wanted to see them almost getting caught by Santa Clause. And @shining-jul-of-hope who pointed out that it's nowhere near Christmas right now. :P I'm so grateful to these lovely people for sharing in the magic with me, and trusting me with their fabulous ideas!

For those of us not part of the UK, cornflour, apparently is what we call corn starch.

Christmas in Quarantine

It was strange, how little Harry Potter's life changed with the Pandemic, but as a blockbuster author who spent most of his time in his office writing the next installment of his fantasy novels, he was more or less socially distanced to begin with. What changed the most was that Ginny was home now. The football leagues were all canceled and that meant Ginny's professional career had been put on hold until further notice.

For the first week or so, it was fun. Harry put off the manuscript in exchange for keeping Ginny company in all the best ways. But then his publisher was emailing him about maybe getting more done since the world had shut down, and his editor started calling and so Harry reluctantly went back into work mode.

He figured Gin would be alright. She had the treadmill and other assorted workout equipment and her team did daily Zoom meetings now. When she wasn't goofing around with the team - he's walked into the kitchen when she's in those meetings, he knows what they're talking about - both their mothers liked to call and check-in, Marlene hosted a Kindle book club now, and Luna taught painting lessons through live videos, so Harry felt confident that Ginny didn't need him to be underfoot trying to "entertain" her.

But he started to wonder if he had underestimated what social distancing would do to his wife when Harry walked out of his office for a snack and heard the sound of... show tunes?

"Gin?" Harry poked his head into the sitting room.

"Alright, Potter?" Ginny was lounging on the sofa in front of the telly, watching something that looked horrendous on their high def screen.

"What's this?" Harry gestured to the telly.

"My mum always said I should watch the musicals she loved as a kid." Ginny shrugged. "And I've got time now, so I thought I'd give a few a go."

Harry chuckled, "You had me worried there. I've never heard you listen to show tunes and I wondered if you'd gone stir crazy."

Ginny rolled her eyes at him. "Don't let that book keep you past dinner again."

Harry shoved his hand in his hair. "I've got an alarm today, I'll be all yours the moment it goes off."

Ginny's returning smile left him wondering if maybe he ought to move that alarm up an hour.

After a week of Ginny watching the musicals her mum grew up with, Harry became accustomed to the show tunes playing from the sitting room. Gin would put on whatever one he assumed her mum had recommended and Harry would come out to assorted big band songs playing. It reminded him of going to his dad's parents' home when he was little, which felt oddly comforting given the way the world was attempting to implode upon itself.

And that was probably why Harry didn't think to question Gin's newfound obsession.

And when she started watching the same one at the start of every day, well Harry just figured that she really liked the music or the story, after all, the bits that Harry had seen were set during the Great Slump and he was starting to wonder if the world wasn't heading for another 21st-century repeat.

Harry was a bit taken aback after a week of her starting the day with the musical Auntie Mame to walk into the kitchen to grab lunch and find Ginny baking mince pies.

"Alright, Gin?"

Ginny grinned up at him from the pie crust she was rolling out.

"Thought I'd make us a bit of a treat."

Harry brushed some of the flour from her cheek.

"Mince pies?"

"You love mince pies." She set the rolling pin down to smear a floured hand across his cheek.

Harry tried to pull back but wasn't quick enough and laughed as he reached for a towel.

"You're right, so I guess the proper response should have been more along the lines of 'thank you' or maybe enthusiastic snogging?"

"I'll take the thank you now and the enthusiastic snogging after these pies are baked and cooled." Ginny kissed him and Harry moved closer to her, letting his lips move slowly against her, loving the way she melted against him.

"Thank you for making mince pies in April. I'll make sure that you get far more than enthusiastic snogging once I'm done working on this blasted novel."

Ginny bit down on his lip. "I can't wait."

Harry was surprised by Ginny baking mince pies. But the next morning he was downright floored to find their Christmas decorations out and mostly up when he stepped out to refill his tea.

"Gin? What on Earth?"

"We need a little Christmas, Harry." Ginny adjusted where she hung an ornament on their tree.

"It's April…" Was all he managed to say as he realized how much she'd managed to get done in the roughly three hours he'd been writing.

"Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!" Ginny laughed and smiled at the telly where Lucille Ball's character was talking about building a home for Jewish refugees.

"Right…"

Ginny moved back to the last couple of boxes of their Christmas decorations.

"I have a surprise at lunch. So don't work through it."

Harry blinked. "This isn't a surprise?"

"We need a little Christmas, Harry!" Ginny pulled the Santa hat or if the box and stuck it on her head.

And then it clicked.

"Are we in that musical?" He gestured to the telly.

Ginny huffed and dug into the box closest to her. "Well, I thought it looked like fun!"

"I can't sing," Harry grinned and moved to the boxes with Ginny. "But we could haul out the holy, maybe fill the stockings, turn on the carols."

Ginny's eyes filled back up with hope, "Bake Christmas cookies, have a snowball fight, watch for Santa?"

Harry slipped his hand into the box next to him as he smiled down at Ginny.

"I have no idea how we'll have a snowball fight, but yes, I'll go close out of my document for today and we'll have ourselves a little Christmas."

Then he lifted out what he'd been digging through the box for.

"But shouldn't we start our Christmas off right?" Harry held up the mistletoe over their heads.

Ginny chuckled, "Very smooth, Potter."

"I had to write a few romance pieces at university." Harry leant closer to her.

"Why have I never seen them?" Ginny smirked, leaning back away from him.

"They were rubbish. I tossed them the moment I had the grade." Harry finally pulled her close enough to capture her lips.

She laughed against him. "Go tell your boss you're out for the day while I go hang this above our bed."

Ginny snatched the mistletoe from his fingers and skipped to their bedroom.

By the time Harry had finished saving everything and putting a few ideas down in his notebook, Ginny was standing at his office door in her bikini with his swimming trunks in hand.

"What happened to Christmas?"

"I figured out how to have a snowball fight!" Ginny tossed him his trunks. "Come on!"

Then she headed for their balcony.

Harry couldn't change fast enough.

"Here," Ginny shoved a bowl at him as he stepped out the door to join her. "This is your ammunition, use it wisely because I'm not using any more of our cornflour for it."

"Cornflour?"

"Yes, and hair conditioner, which I've already told Amazon to send more of."

Harry laughed at how Ginny had moved their two patio chairs to make a battle line.

"I can't believe you managed to get us snow when it's 19 degrees out." Harry stuck his hand in his bowl of fake snow and grimaced at the texture.

"YouTube," Ginny shrugged and then jumped to one side of the chair battle line she'd created.

The moment Harry shut the door, she threw a ball of the 'snow' at this bareback and he grimaced at the way it felt sliding along his spine.

"This is an awful cross between that wretched Halloween slime we made in primary and store-bought decor snow."

"Wouldn't know," Ginny shrugged, "seeing as I haven't been hit by any of it."

Harry didn't move fast enough as she threw another 'snow ball' at him and it slid down his side. He groaned as the feeling of it crawling along his side sent shivers across his skin before reaching into his own bowl and tossing a large handful back at Ginny. She ducked and it splatted against the wall behind her.

There wasn't really much 'snow' between the two of them and when he missed Ginny by a hair for the third time, Harry decided to go all in. He jumped up on the patio chairs and pushed his foot on the back of the chair, tipping it over and taking his wife by surprise as he dumped his bowl over her head.

Ginny yelled and shoved him back onto the toppled chair as she threw the last of her snow at his face. Then she collapsed on top of him and laughed as they tried to keep the 'snow' from their eyes.

"I think a shower is in order." Harry pushed his caked glasses up into his hair. "And then what would you like to do next?"

"I have everything out for some Christmas cookies, icing and all." Ginny wiped some snow from her forehead before it could slide completely into her eyes.

"Baking and Christmas carols?"

"And maybe a bit of something else…" Ginny moved to kiss him but immediately backed away when more 'snow' tried to sneak into her eyes.

Harry laughed and pushed them to stand. "Lead a blind man to the shower, won't you?"

After a long shower, Harry wrapped his arms around Ginny's waist as carols played through her phone and she measured out the flour.

"Aside from the tank top, this feels like Christmas."

"Maybe we should spend Christmas in a warmer climate from now on," Ginny brushed a bit of flour on his nose.

"Our mums would probably hunt us down for something like that."

"Ooo, adventure and a holiday, sounds like a book waiting to be a bestseller."

Harry laughed and helped with the cookies and icing. Slipping his phone out here and there to jot down a few notes.

"I thought you told the boss you were off for the day." Ginny pouted as Harry set his phone down to ice another cookie.

"Just writing a few ideas down," Harry leant over and kissed her cheek.

"Typing, not writing," she teased.

"You said you had a surprise for me and to not work through lunch." Harry redirected their conversation.

"Well, I was going to use it to convince you to go along with having a bit of Christmas in April. But since you decided to jump on board without it, I'm saving it for tonight." She bit her lip.

"Tonight, eh?" Harry stood and moved to the fridge.

"Alright, Potter?" Ginny frowned.

"I know that look," Harry started pulling out sandwich fixings. "I'm going to need more than sugar cookies and icing for lunch if you've got that look."

Her laughter felt more genuine in that moment than it had since the world hit pause, and Harry grinned.

They really did need a little Christmas.

They spent the rest of the day 'virtual caroling'. For which his parents not only thanked them but joined in, taking the phone along as they dug up all the Christmas boxes and argued if they could thaw the ham overnight or if they should just make whatever they had on hand for a family Christmas dinner the next day hosted via Zoom meeting.

Harry scrounged up everything for a shepherds pie dinner and they put on A Christmas Carol after as they ate the iced cookies and drank hot chocolate for dessert.

It felt like Christmas.

Harry felt light and he felt happy and he could see the happiness and lightness in Ginny as well. They definitely needed a little Christmas in all of this pandemic insanity.

"Thank you," he kissed her hairline.

Ginny smiled up at him, snuggling closer to his side. "Thank you for being on board. This has been so much fun. I forgot about how awful it is out there."

Harry kissed her, letting himself indulge in the softness of her lips, the taste of chocolate and sugar on her lips.

"Do I still get to see that surprise?" Harry kissed along her jawline to the spot behind her ear that made her breath catch.

Ginny laughed, "Wait here."

She pushed up and slid out of the room with a confidence that made it a strenuous exercise in self-control for Harry to not follow her out of the sitting room.

To distract himself he took out his phone and jotted down a few more notes.

"I might just throw your phone in your office and lock the door."

Harry quickly locked said phone and tossed it on the side table.

Then he looked up.

Ginny had on a Father Christmas cloak, white wig, and a set of glasses that had the white beard attached.

"Wow…"

Ginny laughed and undid the belt that held the robe shut.

Harry's initial confusion dropped instantly as his wife's body was revealed, no imagination needed.

"We're losing the beard," he smirked and moved to gently pull the glasses-beard combo off Ginny's face.

"What Father Christmas doesn't have a long white beard?" She teased as her fingers moved along his waistband.

Harry kissed her slowly as his hands moved slower against her freckled skin.

"The one who is actually my wife," he pulled back before sweeping Ginny into his arms and carrying her back to their bed, and the mistletoe hanging over it.

The sun long set and the moon high in their bedroom window, Harry waited patiently until Ginny's breathing became even and he was sure she was fast asleep. As quietly as he learned to move when he was a child spying on his Christmas gifts, Harry snuck out of their bed and down to his office.

It took the better part of an hour to get it how he wanted it. Then it took another half-hour to get the printer to print it the way he wanted. And another half-hour after that to find the freaking wrapping paper. But after roughly two hours of trying to be silent, Harry snuck into the sitting room to set the gift under the tree.

He went to grab this phone from the side table when a cloaked image came into his peripheral vision and he almost cried out as all the anxiety of a child being caught by Father Christmas came rushing up at him from years as a boy trying to spy on Christmas gifts.

"Why are you out here?" Ginny's groggy voice sounded and Harry felt relief rush through him like a tidal wave.

"Just grabbing my phone. I forgot to plug it in to charge while we slept."

"Come to bed, you're how I don't freeze to death at night."

Harry slipped his arms around Ginny and led them back to bed with a smile on his face.

He hadn't been caught by Father Christmas, but more importantly, his wife would still get her surprise on Christmas morning.

And just like childhood, Harry awoke far too early, and far too excited to go back to sleep. Though rather than for what he would receive, it was for what he was giving.

"Gin," he nuzzled her hairline and kissed her cheek.

Ginny made a sound that was a cross between a moan and a grunt.

"Don't you want to see what Father Christmas left for you?"

"I'm Father Christmas and I didn't leave anything out because it's not actually December the 25th." She mumbled into her pillow.

Harry chuckled. "Let's just go have a look."

Ginny blinked her eyes open and frowned. "Only if I get to come right back to bed."

Harry put his hand over his heart. "I promise, well go see if there are any surprises and then come right back to bed."

"Fine," Ginny pushed up from the bed, her Father Christmas robe slipping from her shoulders. "But if this is how you're going to be with children then we're rethinking our future plans."

Harry laughed and forced himself not to run full tilt down the hall and leave his adorably sleepy wife in the dust.

He held his breath as Ginny moved to the tree and his lone gift that sat wrapped below its branches.

She turned to look up at him, bewildered, "What's this?"

"Open it," he shrugged.

Ginny pulled the wrapping away and slid the booklet from the manilla envelope he'd used to hold it.

"A Holiday and an Adventure," She read aloud. "Harry, what is this?"

Harry stuck a hand in his hair. "Well since you're not on the team for the foreseeable future, and you've always got the best ideas when I'm stuck in a story, I thought maybe, maybe you'd like to write a book together, you and me. All those pages in the booklet are the notes I was jotting down all day yesterday. And I've organized them out the way I do with my novels. If you like the idea and we finish the story, we could send it over to my editor. See what she thinks."

Ginny looked up from the booklet, eyes wide. "You want to write a book with me?"

Harry smiled, "I kind of already do. You're my sounding board and you find more of my plot holes than my editor does. So I guess I'm really asking you to be an active participant so we can put your name on the cover too."

Ginny looked back down at the booklet before launching herself at him. Harry caught her and managed to spin them around so he fell on the sofa and not his back.

"So is this a yes?" Harry chuckled as he kissed her hairline.

Ginny kissed him enthusiastically before jumping up. "Come on! I want to start right now!"

Harry snagged her around the middle before she could go running off. "What happened to wanting to go right back to bed?"

"Don't be ridiculous," Ginny laughed, "do you have any idea how badly I've wanted some real control in your novels?"

"Now you have a story to be in control of." Harry kissed her. "Happy Christmas, Gin."

Ginny's smile shone like the rising run out their sitting room window. "Happy Christmas, Harry."

Summary: The boys can’t fly home for Christmas, so they have to find another way.

Timeline: Christmas Season 3, I have also kinda ignored the main storyline of Season 3. The boys needed a break, so I gave them one. Post season 3B, before Season 3C cos we haven’t seen it yet.

I’m probably posting this before it is ready and I’m not happy with the ending so may change where it ends when I start writing the next part, but I really need a little cheering up today, so here be the next 4000-odd words of this fic. I hope you enjoy them :D

They stashed their luggage in the hostel, a large white and wooden building that had obviously seen many residents over the years, but was well loved and maintained.

Melissa gave them a quick tour of the compound. It consisted of series of buildings similar to the hostel but of varying sizes over looking the ocean and the adjacent Oneraki Beach. The island was basically a triangle with the encampment on the north facing side high up on Fleetwood Bluff. There was something about a Flagstaff but Virgil missed it...mainly due to the conversation Gordon and Sam were laughing over behind him.

Whatever it was called, the view was magnificent. Far below in the bay, A Little Lightning was a small white smudge on the blue of the Pacific.

Melissa ran them through the rules of conduct on the island. No one was to venture anywhere on the island outside the compound unaccompanied by a DOC employee. Please keep your luggage inside the hostel. All life is protected on the island and in the waters. It was illegal to damage or remove anything. No littering. The list went on.

It was a long one.

Apart from being a cetacean biologist and a loud talker, Sam was also apparently the resident cook on the island. Melissa put no claim to any culinary skills, so had left it to Sam.

The man had baked a cake.

A Christmas cake.

In their isolation on the boat, despite their aim to be home for Christmas, Virgil had forgotten it was the day before Christmas Eve. December twenty-three.

It wasn’t the first time he had forgotten Christmas. Three years ago he had spent Christmas dragging survivors off the Amazon flood plain when the river engulfed an entire city. Christmas had been obliterated. As had the two months after due to the damn fever he had caught from those flood waters. It hadn’t been a great start to the year.

But this year it was different. They were on vacation. A forced vacation, but a vacation nonetheless, of which the whole purpose was to get home in time for Christmas. Yet the decorations and the tree in the corner of the communal hall had taken him by surprise.

The cake was very nice. He had to hold Alan back from grabbing seconds. But it got him thinking about the day after next and what they would be doing as a family.

“He sang to the whales?!”

Virgil jumped at Sam’s exclamation somewhere behind him.

“Yeah, he did. You should have heard it. It was incredible.” Virgil’s eyes widened at the pride in Gordon’s voice.

“They didn’t pay any attention, though, did they? All previous attempts have failed.”

“Ho, Sam, I have to show you the recordings. They responded alright. Virg may not speak whale, but he knows how to speak emotion. Mamma whale definitely understood something.”

Virgil buried his face in his coffee. The experience was still raw. He wasn’t sure he wanted to talk about it and it was inevitable that he would be asked.

“What did he use?” And the conversation dropped to normal levels. Virgil’s name was mentioned several times along with John’s. Sam was eager and excited.

Virgil felt dread.

“You okay, bro?” Alan was frowning at him while hoovering the second piece of cake Virgil had already told him he couldn’t have.

Why did he bother?

“So I guess we’ll be hauling in extra food supplies for these people after you’ve finished with them.”

“It was one piece of cake.”

“It’s the only cake, Alan.”

His brother’s eyes widened in realisation. “Oh.”

“Yes, oh.”

“I’ll bring them something before New Years.”

“Yes, you will.”

“Or maybe Scott can. He might want to visit.”

“What? Why?” But Alan was gesturing with his head in the direction of their eldest brother.

Deep in conversation with Melissa Fisher.

Virgil raised an eyebrow.

“So by claiming for twenty one instead of twenty volunteers we get just that extra bit of funding.”

“Clever move.” Scott had finished his cake and was drinking tea. Virgil had shot him an incredulous look when he asked for it, but if there was one thing Scott remembered about this place, it was the herbal tea. Melissa knew how to brew a great drink...even if she had to threaten him and his father to try it the first time.

“Are you still using Jack Dunning?”

“Oh, yes, the man is brilliant. And he does all our work pro bono which saves us so much. Thank you for the recommendation.”

Scott was not going to mention one Gordon Tracy jumping up and down in front of him one afternoon several years ago. His aquanaut brother had been apoplectic and at the end of a very sharp conversation, Scott had been more than willing to call in their lawyers to act on behalf of the DOC Kermadec Expedition. The fishery megacorporation challenging the validity of the Sanctuary hadn’t known what hit them.

And if Scott wanted Jack to send him all the bills, that was his prerogative. Melissa didn’t have to know everything.

“So how is Virgil?” It was a quiet question as she picked up her own cup of tea.

He eyed her a moment. He was well aware of her attraction to his brother. Gordon had made a point of stirring Virgil until his quiet brother had clapped him around the ears.

“He’s recovering. I’ll be happier when he is home.”

She eyed him as if considering whether she should breach a topic or not. Something flickered in her eyes. “How goes Tracy Island? Is the regrowth flourishing as we hoped?”

He thought back at the tracts of native vegetation his father had planted all those years ago, mostly on the other side of the island, though some covered scars from the IR excavations.The pōhutukawa and palm trees seemed to be okay, but his mind was usually on other things when he ran past them.

He shook his head. “To be honest, I don’t know. You could ask Gordon?”

She peered closer at him. ��Are you okay?”

He straightened where he sat. “I’m good.” He stretched. “Got any recommendations for a good place to run? Need to stretch my legs.”

She swallowed the last of her drink. “I can show you.”

“No need, just point me in the right direction and I’ll find my way.”

A snort. “You’re not on Tracy Island, Commander. No visitors go unaccompanied on Raoul, remember. You’ve got a choice between me and Sam.” A smirk. “And you won’t get much distance out of him unless you prefer swimming.”

Internally he groaned. He had been looking forward to time alone.

“I can show you around the crater rim. You’ll get a great workout.”

The thought of finding the physical relief was just too tempting. The hike up the hill had been a teaser and he wanted more. He sculled the last of his tea. “Fine. Lead the way.” He hoped she could keep up.

Her smile was a challenge in itself. “I’ll go grab my running gear. Meet you out front in ten.”

“FAB.”

Gordon watched as Scott stood up, brushed past Virgil and said something, before following Mel out the door.

“Do you think Virgil would be willing to talk about his experience?”

Gordon glanced at Sam and then eyed his brother. His linen shirt was tight across his shoulders as the man hunched over his coffee. “I don’t know.”

“Can you ask?” Sam was all eagerness. It was understandable. The surfer had made cetaceans his life’s work and this was a fantastic opportunity.

A sucked in breath. “Leave it with me, I’ll see what I can do.”

John, drink in hand, had taken the opportunity to find himself a vantage point on the cliff. The island was very quiet, even quieter than Tracy Island was at times and considerably bigger.

He appreciated the solitude.

Of course, the boat hadn’t exactly been loud or even crowded. He truly enjoyed the time with his brothers. But it was nice to step away, even if only for a little time.

He parked himself in the long grass at the edge of the bluff and stared out into the blue of the Pacific.

An idle thought.

“Eos?”

“Hello, John.”

“Hello, Eos. Status?”

“All emergency calls are being fielded by the appropriate agencies. Mr Lemaire has entombed himself in ice at the South Pole in an attempt to locate Santa Claus. I have advised the GDF. He is safe and secure for the moment.”

John’s thoughts locked up for a second. “The South Pole? Santa Claus lives in the North Pole.”

“Ignoring the fact that Santa Claus is a myth, Mr Lemaire claimed that ‘the North Pole is an ocean and only an idiot would build a house on an ice floe that melts every summer, therefore he must be hidden at the South Pole.’ He planned to be the first human to interview the father of Christmas and used a specialised drilling machine to dig into the ice...which promptly collapsed on him twenty metres down.”

John sighed. “You are sure he is safe?”

“Colonel Casey has sent a specialist team. He and his wife have enough survival supplies to make it through to New Years if necessary.”

“Monitor the situation. Call us in only if there is no alternative.” A trip to the South Pole was something they did not need.

“FAB, John.”

“And how are you?”

“I am functioning well.”

“Do you have any results from the problem I set you?”

“I have analysed three thousand two hundred and twenty-three recordings of humpback whale communications. Unfortunately, many of the recordings are missing the lower frequencies as the equipment used was not sufficient. I do have some translation possibilities, however I am still calculating multiple variables and am hesitant to postulate a theory.”

He had expected as much. She had only been working on it for a few hours. “Are you enjoying the work?” To be honest, he wasn’t expecting a positive result. It did, however, keep a bored AI occupied.

“It is very interesting. Virgil’s response shows no pattern relative to the language he was attempting to respond to, yet he received a result.”

“I suspect there is an element of synergy in the language that enables it to become more than a sum of its parts. Perhaps that is what Virgil was able to tap into.”

“I’m not sure what you mean, John.”

John sucked in a breath. “You are a computer program, yet you are more than lines of code, you are a person. Correct?”

“Yes.”

“Perhaps this language is a step beyond simple complexity. Perhaps the elements combined create a new level of communication? One that is not entirely on the conscious level.”

His daughter was silent for a moment. “How does interpretation differ between the human conscious and subconscious? The literature claims a lack of cognitive recognition of events created or observed subconsciously. How could Virgil create something he is not aware of?”

“There is much we do not yet understand. The human subconscious is well known for gathering multiple observed factors and combining them into instinct, all without conscious control. Perhaps you should explore that region of research?” Come to think of it, Virgil’s instincts in the field were very sharp. There were multiple examples of his brother acting against orders and ultimately saving lives that otherwise would have been lost, including those of his brothers.

“I will, John, thank you.”

“You are welcome.” His lips curled into a smile. “Enjoy yourself.”

It was amazing to finally get his feet moving.

Scott’s shoes pounded volcanic dust and rock so familiar it was almost as if he was home. A regular thud-thud-thud, the sea breeze, the rock, the vegetation...energy flowed through him and was used, muscles firing, skin tingling in the afternoon air. God, it was so good to get out.

Melissa said nothing to him beyond directing which path to take. She had removed her DOC uniform, reducing her clothing to a tight crop top, shorts and running shoes, and if he was honest, he had to admit he was appreciating the view.

The woman was all slim muscle. Tight waist, lightly browned skin. Her pale hair bounced behind her in a hastily tied ponytail and he found himself following it as she leapt from path to rock and over logs.

She had no trouble keeping up. In fact, it was more the other way around. He had to work to keep up with her, despite the difference in stride. She knew exactly where she was going and she was offering no handicap.

They pushed up a steep incline for some time. She had taken them off the main track and deep into the forest. Birds sung all around and the wind rustled through the blossoming trees. The pōhutukawa were in their brilliant crimson Christmas flowers, festooning the island as if to decorate for the season.

Grandma loved the pōhutukawa trees on Tracy Island and was in fact the only reason he knew the name of the plant. She cut flowers every year for their Christmas table to acknowledge the beautiful piece of land they lived on.

They reminded him of home.

This whole island reminded him of home.

Melissa ran around a particularly large tree and he followed only to come to a screeching halt as the path suddenly changed direction. A huge crater appeared in front of him.

Melissa was running on the spot. She nodded down at the lake at the bottom of the volcanic bowl. “Blue Lake.”

And it was.

A stunning, almost unnatural cobalt blue. He stared down at it, panting from his exertions. His thin grey tank top clung to his sweaty body.

She grinned at him before darting off along the crater rim.

Hmmm. An indrawn breath and he took off after her.

The crater wasn’t massive on a volcanic scale, but it was impressive nonetheless. The late afternoon sun shadowed the mountain, emphasising the extremes of the landscape.

“The far lake is Green Lake.” Melissa had stopped and was running on the spot again. A fine sheen of perspiration glistened on her skin.

He did know the geography, he had flown over the island often enough, but this perspective was considerably different. “It’s beautiful.” Not unlike its caretaker.

The random thought shook him out of contemplation and forced himself to look out at the smaller green lake in the distance.

Where the hell had that come from? A sideways glance in her direction and he found her gaze caught on the spectacle before them, her love for the island obvious.

Well, he had to admit that he did have his own island love. Just not this island.

“C’mon, slow poke, let’s up the pace.” And she darted off into the forest again.

Really?

Thighs pumping, he followed her under the trees, down the slope a little before he found himself climbing again.

She called back to him from several metres in front. “Got a full body workout coming up. I hope you’re up to it.” Her grin bounced down the mountain and off his head.

She was challenging him? Well, he had been known to hang off rocket ships and climb vertical cliff faces. Bring it on.

She did.

The path dissolved. There was no other real word for it. It became a mass of black jagged volcanic rocks, interspersed with tree regrowth.

“This was dumped here last time Virgil yanked us off the Island.” Her words were interspersed with harsh breathing as she clambered over the obstacle. As he climbed the crater once again came into view and the scar in the side of the mountain became clear.

Wow.

There was a swath of dead forest dotted with regrowth. He remembered Virgil’s report. The footage had involved billowing smoke and steam, but his brother had confined most of his readings to the encampment, his concern more for the lives endangered than any geological happenings. Brains had taken readings and read GeoNet’s reports as he did for any activity on the Kermadec Ridge, but he had reported it small and unremarkable.

Looked far more remarkable in person.

Melissa reached the top of the pile of rock and finally stopped.

He was grateful. The woman knew how to push it. He clambered up the last few and stood next to her.

The view was magnificent.

“She risks our lives, but I have to say she is beautiful.” Her love was there again, in her eyes. It was a similar expression to what he saw on Gordon’s face when he stared out across the ocean.

“You love this island, don’t you.” It wasn’t a question.

She turned to stare at him and he realised that her eyes were a startling multicoloured grey. “I love this place. It’s mountains, its plants, its ocean, its everything. It is one of the truly saved places on our planet. There aren’t many left.” She shrugged. “I’m just lucky to be able to experience it and contribute my little bit of help.”

He snorted. “Even I know what you are doing is anything but little. You’ve expanded the Sanctuary by hundreds of kilometres since you’ve been here.”

Her gaze turned back to him. “You’ve been reading up on me?”

Half a grin. “I like to know who I am dealing with.”

She arched an eyebrow. “And what did you find, Commander?”

His smile spread. “Someone remarkable.”

Virgil hid for the rest of the afternoon. He slunk away to the hostel, found himself a bed and curled up. At some point, he heard a brother open the door to the communal room and another brother, Alan maybe, mutter something, but they went away and he was glad for it.

The wood of the building creaked in the sun and birds squawked almost continually, but despite, or perhaps because of the soundscape, he fell into a much better sleep than he had had the entire week. Deep and complete.

The sun was heading towards the horizon when he woke, yellowing rays cutting across the hostel windows, turning the white paintwork gold.

Gordon was in the room, fossicking through a bag. “G’don?” He blinked and screwed up his face.

“Hey, Virg! Sorry, did I wake you?”

“No. Don’t think so?”

“How are you feeling?”

Virgil rolled over and pushed himself up, sitting on the side of the bed. He rubbed his hands over his face. “Okay, I guess.”

His brother snorted. “I’ll ask you again in half an hour after coffee and brain activation.”

The grunt he sent in the aquanaut’s direction only proved his point.

“Sam is very interested in what you did today.”

Crap. Another grunt.

That earned him a querying look. Virgil had no idea what his brother expected. If a simple question about how he was feeling was a stumbler, the complex concepts involving what had happened earlier in the day were a complete brain frier.

“You up for dinner?” Gordon was suddenly sitting on the bed next to him. When had he moved? “Sam’s dragged out the barbecue. Claims he wants to test the theory of ‘throwing a prawn on the barbie’. Apparently, as an Australian he’s never cooked a shrimp on a barbecue before.” As if to punctuate the statement, the smell of cooking meat wafted in through the window.

Virgil stared at his brother.

“They had to import the shrimp for Christmas.”

The staring continued.

“They’re throwing a party because we’re here and using their Christmas supplies to do it...why the hell are you staring at me like that?”

Virgil didn’t answer him. He just wrapped an arm around him and hugged Gordon to his side.

His brother didn’t resist, but did look at him strangely. “You okay?”

“I’m good.”

Gordon didn’t say anything further and for a moment they sat there together.

Virgil’s stomach rumbled.

Gordon snorted. “C’mon, bro, food awaits.” He slipped Virgil’s hold and, turning around, offered him a hand up.

Without another word, Virgil took it and stood up beside his brother, his hand landing on his shoulder and squeezing.

That earned him another questioning look, but he ignored it.

The grassed central area of the compound had been transformed both by the golden sunlight and the lights strung between the trees. Sam was standing in front of a sizzling barbecue, someone Virgil didn’t know, laughing and holding him close. Alan and John were deep in discussion with another new person. All three of them had drinks in hand. John’s hair flickered about as if it was on fire, the sun catching it as the breeze tossed it around. And Scott...

Virgil stared.

Scott was laughing his ass off.

With Melissa Fisher.

The two of them sat beside each other in a couple of deck chairs. His brother appearing more relaxed than Virgil had seen him in a long time.

“What happened?” It came out without thought.

“They went for a run. Came back friendly as can be. I think Scott may have fallen for her charms.”

Charms? The woman was a handful. Virgil wasn’t afraid to admit he found her a challenge. Her gratitude the last time he had airlifted her and her squad of staff and volunteers off Raoul had been...exuberant.

If Kayo hadn’t escorted her out of his cockpit, he wasn’t sure what he would have done. As it was, Gordon had ribbed him until he cracked and thwapped him one.

But Scott seemed almost enthusiastic. Despite himself, Virgil broke into a grin.

Gordon echoed it. “Yeah, it’s great to finally see him relaxing.”

Quiet. “Yes. Yes, it is.”

Gordon grabbed his arm and nudged him in the direction of a table piled with food and drink. “Let’s get you fuelled up so I can introduce you to Liam and Elspeth.”

Coffee, as always, solved a lot of problems and, hugging his mug like the lifeline it was, Virgil was introduced to Sam’s husband.

Liam turned out to be a meteorologist. Raoul was not only important as a wildlife sanctuary, but also supported this corner of the Pacific’s meteorological station, providing atmospheric readings crucial to both weather and climate studies.

Having no shortage of interest in weather conditions, both as a pilot and a rescue operative who often found himself in the extremes of all kinds of those conditions, Virgil fell into in a very interesting discussion regarding navigating tropical cyclones.

In appearance, Liam was taller than Sam, blond and much more reserved than his husband. Hell, it was almost like someone had grabbed John and Gordon, thrown their physical characteristics in a blender and then assembled Liam and Sam. Liam even had a similar flick of blond hair on his forehead that John had in his red hair.

Almost in contrast, where Liam was pale and tall, Elspeth was dark and petite. Long plaited black hair hung to her waist, her features in shades of sepia. The artist in him was quite drawn to her.

But not as much as his two starbound brothers, because Elspeth was an astronomer. She and Liam had been on the other side of the island earlier in the day collecting readings from the observatory. Something about a rogue object passing through the Solar System. Virgil lost the discussion at some point between the Oort cloud and the orbit of Jupiter. He kept getting distracted by Scott laughing.

Virgil hadn’t heard his brother laugh so freely in a long time. Melissa appeared to be enjoying herself. It was as if a bubble had surrounded them and cut them off from everyone else. Stuck in their own happy little world.

An irrational spark of envy and the inevitable smirk at his brother deploying his well played charms were all completely smothered by the happiness he felt seeing Scott finally relaxing and enjoying himself.

As the evening became night, Virgil continued to hover on the edges of conversation, more Gordon, Sam and Liam than John, Alan and Elspeth. The latter group’s discussion had dissolved into equations and while Virgil loved a good piece of math like any engineer, theoreticals were more than he was willing to think about right at the moment.

The food was delicious and he complimented Sam thoroughly. Liam smiled and waxed poetic about some of the meals his husband had cooked in the past. Sam blushed appropriately red on several occasions, setting Gordon off into ribbing the poor man.

A thumb in Gordon’s direction. “Ignore him, he’s just jealous. There are days on end where we don’t get time to cook a decent meal.”

“You don’t have a cook?” Sam was frowning.

“We have Grandma.” Gordon was smiling ruefully.

“She’s a good cook?”

Virgil cut in. “Grandma is the backbone of International Rescue.”

“Your grandmother works with you?”

“Often, yes.”

“A truly family business.”

“Yes, it is.”

The conversation fell quiet a moment and Virgil took a swig of the beer in his hand.

“So, how did you become a cetacean biologist?”

Sam’s eyes widened. “Oh, um, had an encounter, fell in love, now devoted to them forever.”

Liam snorted. “He asked about you and whales, not for our love story.”

His husband shrugged. “Pretty much the same story really. Found myself in dire straits off Waitpinga Beach while surfing, dolphin saved me.”

Gordon had obviously heard the story before. He grinned. “For a surfer, you really are crap at surfing.”

“It’s all about the image, Gordo. You know that.” But Sam was grinning as much as Gordon. “But on a more serious note,” and the grin turned into a mock glare at Virgil’s brother, “she saved my life. It was a big, life changing moment. Been saving the whales ever since.”

“I can understand that.” All the Tracys could understand that.

Sam sparked up, all eagerness and bright eyes. “So, you spoke to a whale today?”

How Technology Stole Christmas - Diana Flynn

When I think about Christmas now and Christmas when I was young, a lot has changed. What would the holidays be when you can’t ask Alexa to play Christmas songs, watch your favorite youtube bloggers Christmas hauls, order your last-minute gifts on Amazon or upload a timeline of your Elf on the Shelf’s movement throughout the season? Today it is unbelievable how much technology and digital business are involved in the holidays. My point of view on this topic is sheer amazement.

Back in the early 2000’s my family would throw reindeer food on the lawn and look in the sky trying to predict where Santa was, getting the sheer enjoyment of running around aimlessly looking into the black sky for a little glimmer of light. Nowadays, kids sit in front of a computer screen watching Santa’s sleigh move across the world, waiting for the “next stop” to say their town.

Many of us have written notes to Santa asking for articles of clothing, the newest iPhone, random trinkets that we need to have, and many many more things. Sometimes when these wish-list items end up under the tree they come in the wrong color, size or are simply just not what you asked for. Solution: My younger sister has decided that instead of writing her Christmas list on a pre-made letter-to-Santa note, she will upload pictures of what she wants to a Shared Album on iCloud which she so generously adds my mother too.

What is genius about this is she can add in the comment section of each photo the website, the size, color, and any other necessary facts to ease the purchasing process. Every time she adds a photo, my mother will get a notification that new photos have been added. To say the least, my sister has figured out how to get exactly what she wants.

On the idea of gifts, let’s talk about technology. The majority of the most desired gifts in the last decade are technology-based. Everyone wants the newest iPhone, Apple Watch, smart TV, video camera doorbells like Ring, etc. In the final three months of 2018, Apple reported $84.3 billion in revenue, 32% of Apple’s total revenue for 2018. In 2017, AirPods were in such high demand, Apple ran out during the holiday season so customers weren’t getting their AirPods delivered until January of 2018- a real tragedy for people looking for, the then priced, $159 stocking stuffers.

You may think some turned to Amazon for additional AirPods but Amazon was also sold out! Now what! Aside from the lack of Airpods, Amazon still performed amazing and to this day does, in the holiday season. Amazon in the holiday quarter of 2017 recorded a profit of $1.9 billion. Amazon and many other online retailers participate in the “Cyber Monday” sale that follows Black Friday. These sale periods are a reason revenues spike so much during the holiday season. Also, the delivery time on Amazon is a major factor. Since the holiday season is such a busy time, it’s easy to forget things. Amazon makes it possible to still show up to Christmas dinner with a present for everyone even if you order on the 22nd/23rd as a Prime member- incredible! Don’t forget about the Amazon Alexa- ask her to play some tunes while you decorate your tree, or if you need to order a few last-minute gifts she can do it for you.

Traditions are an essential part of the holidays. One recently new tradition that many Youtubers and Bloggers have started is “Christmas Hauls” where they videotape themselves reviewing everything they got for Christmas. You may think why would I ever want to watch that? But as watcher, they are SO interesting, I’m always dying to see what fun things/cute clothing people get. My cousins and I spend quite a bit of time talking about these vlogs on Christmas Day comparing what each of our bloggers gets. But this is exactly what the bloggers want, they make money off of us watching every video. Also, I am sure many of them make money off of products they “get” for Christmas.

One last topic I’ll touch on is the viral Elf on the Shelf. The stuffed doll travels during the night to report to Santa how the kids behave. When he returns, he sleeps in a new place every night, so the fun part is finding him each morning. The Elf on the Shelf is a package of a book and an elf doll, and it sells for $29.99 at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Like in class we discussed that this is viral because it is interactive, fun, simple, and celebrities have even gotten involved. Kourtney Kardashian kept her fans wondering where each morning the elf would be on her Instagram stories, James Corden did a bid on how his elf was haunting him and SNL did a skit on the elves reporting to Santa. This concept has evolved from a little family fun to a viral phenomenon.

Happy holidays!

Just wanted to wish everyone happy holidays and merry Christmas. Also wanted to include a couple quick Christmas decoration hacks for spoonies I put in practice myself this year.

First off, the tree itself. If you're on a budget, Walgreens is currently selling a miniature Christmas tree with decorations for $9.99. I grabbed one of the last two myself.

If possible, you also have the option of getting a small (one you can handle anyway) and pre-decorated tree. Colored Christmas trees are another option - they themselves are the decoration, after all (last year I bought a small purple Christmas tree, since I had been traveling across state borders repeatedly for health care reasons that year, I was pretty burned out but I still had a tree!). Though keep in mind these can be more expensive.

The last option is seeing if your state/country is offering a service that will haul in a Christmas tree for you and haul it out for free once you're done with it. I did this myself last year during a move and it was the only reason I had a tree. Didn't get to decorate it but hey, there's another life hack: break things down into small steps. If you've got a tree great. No one says you have to go all out decorating it if you don't want to or can't.

Next, the actual decorations. Now, I've only gotten a house recently that I was allowed to decorate. However, I'm on a budget this year and I'm also still renting. So it had to be something simple and inexpensive.

Then at Walmart I found these packs of Christmas stickers. They have just about any pattern you could want, they're simple to put up, and best of all they're repositionable and removable. They're also max $2 for a variety pack. I used those both indoors and out this year and they worked great. Only thing I recommend is keeping the wrappers if you want to hang onto and re-use them next year. That way you can just put them back on the wrapper and not lose them.

Final thing I discovered this year but didn't have the chance to use. Those Christmas wreaths that people put on their door can actually be hung with wreath hooks. You don't need to sit there and use a Command hook or hammer and nails. On Amazon you can find a wreath hook for $0.98, hang it over the top of your door, and hang the wreath on the hook. Simple solution.

Anyway this is late I know but I still wanted to post it for use next year and for any others who like me sometimes celebrate holidays a bit late, not on the day of.

After the saga of the month-long Miraculous Christmas calendar review, it feels right to come back for round two with an Easter-themed treat!

(The alternative title is I Really Wanted The ML Easter Egg And Figured I Could Justify Buying It For Review Purposes, but thats a bit of a mouthful.)

I bought this from Amazon UK for £14.90 - you can find the listing for yourself here, but it’s currently out of stock! I guess I picked it up at the right time.

On opening the box, I’m already seeing shards of chocolate. I suppose that means the egg is a goner. I think I’m gonna have to complain about that - trying to ship a fragile chocolate egg is tricky enough (I was prepared for some damage, what can ya do), but it was crammed into a very small box with no extra padding to at least attempt preserving it.

I don’t mind too much, but for almost £15 I think I deserve something that actually looks like an egg, and I’m already suspecting this one won’t. Call me picky.

Here it is! Looking pretty battered and worse for wear after unpadded shipping, but still alarmingly cute. I’m excited to get into this.

Ladybug and Chat Noir share the spotlight (pun fully intended)! Ladybug’s still front and centre, but this is a much better balance than the Christmas calendar. Interestingly she boasts her CGI model while Chat Noir retains his 2D promotional art - the different images look a bit disjointed up close (not least because Chat Noir’s art is much higher quality), but at a passing glance it’s not too weird. I definitely get the impression of them being a close duo, at any rate, which is my favourite marketing angle.

Here’s the full display card, if that’s something anyone was interested in (naught to three sad onions). It’s clear this is European packaging, selling the egg in French, Spanish, English and... Portuguese? Huh. The ingredients/warnings are only in French and Spanish - good thing I took both languages at school or I’d have no clue what I was getting into here, this egg could be anything.

One thing it certainly is is gluten-free, and that’s really cool! I’m sensitive to wheat, which tends to get into all kinds of unexpected foods, so at least I can trust this egg to treat me gently. Thanks, Ladybug (and Chat Noir)! I’ll live another day!

Without the display card, our Easter goodie bag starts looking like more of an ominous sack. It looked a lot better on the website, but if you’re getting something shipped from Spain in an UNPADDED BOX I guess this is about what you should expect.

It’s taped up at the neck, and from trying to pry off the Amazon product label I noticed the foil print is liable to come off with the stickiness, so I spent an inordinate amount of time snipping the tape away to avoid more damage. I can already tell it’s cute paper, but let’s wait till we can spread it out.

And oh boy, does it spread out! Time to zoom the camera away. There’s a huge swathe of decorative foil included in this egg and I love it.

It’s really difficult to get a good picture with the lighting, but there are at least ten different pictures in use here - seven that I can count for Ladybug and three for Chat Noir - and all flipped around to make a total of 20 “unique” images. There’s so much to look at, and while Ladybug may have more variation the clear prominence of Chat Noir is really satisfying! This packaging is definitely selling them as a duo and I love it.

This is my favourite image. I’m not actually sure where this Chat Noir is from; it’s not one of the standard marketing images the designers recycle over and over - I’m actually not totally convinced I’ve even seen it before. New or old, that’s a really cute little smirk. I want to pinch his cheeks.

I’m definitely keeping this foil. I don’t know what I’ll do with it, but I’m keeping it. It’s lovely.

Now it’s time for what we came here for - chocolate! And... uh, well, that sure looks like it could have been an egg once. Hoo boy, someone at Amazon is getting a stiffly worded email.

Fortunately it looks like the egg wasn’t anything special, just the standard crazy-pavement design. I wasn’t expecting (eggspecting?) it to have a Miraculous design, and considering it got absolutely slaughtered on the way over that’s probably a good thing.

Unless it’s supposed to be a Carapace design. Oh my god, they finally bring out some Nino merch and it just gets destroyed. That’s cruel.

The chocolate itself actually tastes better than I was expecting! It’s got that standard “generic inexpensive cocoa” flavour, but instead of that slightly bitter/plastic taste I feared it’s a lot gentler and milkier. I could eat this and enjoy it. Nicely done, lads.

Something else lurks in the cup. This must be the “Surprise/Sorpresa/Surpresa” the front of the packaging warned us about.

What a haul! Don’t eat these, kids.

I’ll admit from the product listing I assumed this set came with a Ladybug and Chat Noir bracelet, but the rubber ball is different to the advertised design too, so I suppose what it means is you get a random selection. Either that or the reason my egg is shattered is because Astruc broke into the packaging and stole the Chat Noir bracelet to knock my level of satisfaction down a peg.

I wonder if these were inside the egg or just in the bottom of the cup? I guess we’ll never know. We don’t have the “no inedibles packaged with edible foods” law here (which prevents Kinder Eggs and similar gimmicks in the US) so it could have been either. Breaking open the egg to find these little things inside would have been cool!

The bracelet is teensy, but it does actually fit me, little baby wrists that I have.

Now I held off on yelling about this as soon as I saw it so I could get the bracelet out of the way, but-- aaaaa. AAAAA. AAAAA.

This is actual Chat Noir merch. Not Ladybug and Chat Noir, just Chat Noir. This disproves Astruc breaking into my Easter egg because there’s no way he would have overlooked something like this. From the product listing I could see they have other designs for these - Ladybug and both heroes together - so I’m counting myself exceptionally lucky to have landed the solo Chat Noir one.

So that’s that!

Was it cute? Yes! Was it worth the price tag? Absolutely not! Am I satisfied? Moderately!

It’s a nice product (when it doesn’t arrive in smithereens) where the main draw is obviously the show itself, and I’m far more satisfied with this than the Christmas calendar in terms of design, marketing angle and the quality of the little toys included. I adore that Chat Noir bouncy ball!

The price tag was absolutely not worth it - especially when it only comes with one bracelet, rather than two as I initially thought - but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt in assuming Amazon’s marked it up a good bit, and hopefully I’ll get at least a partial refund for it arriving in the state it did which will balance things out. I’d expect to see this on a supermarket shelf for about £6.99 tops; at the cheaper end of branded Easter goods.

Overall, I had fun with this! I wouldn’t recommend it at the current price, but if it makes the rounds again more cheaply it’s a nice little thing to pick up if you’re into collecting Miraculous stuff. The chocolate tastes better than expected, the toys are cute (and especially cool if you get your hands on a Chat Noir one), and you’ll get a gigantic swathe of decorative foil to use however you please. I’m thinking I might line my shelf of Miraculous merch with it.

(LATER EDIT: Amazon responded and refunded me the entire cost, no returns necessary, which is absolutely wonderful! It might be an obliterated egg, but it’s a free obliterated egg, with the cute packaging and toys to boot. How lovely!)

Decorating for Christmas + Our Winter To-Do List

A few weeks ago, my friend Mary and I went shopping for Christmas decorations and my haul got me super excited for the Christmas season.

We usually go to the camp for Thanksgiving, so I like to decorate right before we leave. There’s nothing like coming home to a beautiful, twinkly Christmas tree. There’s also nothing like the excitement of wondering if your cat destroyed said tree while you were away. Cats make everything harder.

We watched Frozen while decorating. It reminds me of when my oldest nephew (Hudson) was really little. He loved it. We watched it over and over again. While we were at the Galleria in Houston, Elsa herself ;) came out onto the ice rink and danced. Hudson couldn’t take his eyes off of her. I remember having hot chocolate and cookies with my dad that weekend and shopping all day long. It was such a great weekend, and since Frozen brings me back to it, it’s one of those movies that can instantly put me in a good mood.

My sister and I made gingerbread lattes to drink while decorating the tree. They tasted sooo good. They probably would’ve been better had I remembered to heat the milk before frothing it…also, the idea of making your own caramel might seem daunting. It’s actually super easy; it helps to remove the sugar from the heat before its completely melted, since the pot remains hot after you take it off the burner. You don’t want burnt caramel. For the foam, invest in a milk frother. They’re pretty cheap on Amazon and make the job a lot easier.

Alex and I decorated the tree together. Does wrapping the ribbon around it make anyone else want to have a small meltdown...? My favorite part of decorating might be hanging our souvenir ornaments. We pick a new one out together every time we go somewhere new.

Finally, every season I write a to-do list to ensure we make the most of the coming months. Here’s Winter 2019!

I’m selling things again. Physical goods of course. I tried to sell those really old books but selling things that don’t have bar codes is a taller order than I anticipated so I’m scaling back the age of the products back to something with bar codes and this time I have a bunch of children’s books.

Just want to reiterate. There is a standard fee for selling items on Amazon. It is 5 dollars. If I price anything lower than that I’m basically paying Amazon to get rid of it for me. That’s silly. I’d rather burn it or give it to a library than owe money giving an item away.

So the bottom line price for the books is 8 dollars. Some things will cost 10 but 8 is going to be a standard. I have a minor collection to sell. As a seller I am Aaron Lee Johnson 2nd (I’m not being ponce by the way I had to use my whole name otherwise Amazon would reflect it as someone else’s name) and if you are going to buy any of these items from me you have to buy it from that seller.

I have a plate for sale! “Tender Coaxing” Signs of love series Polar Bear Plate.

It is a decorative plate made in 1982 by Edwin Knowles. It’s a very cute plate. I think it would be just the thing for family home and at 10 dollars it’s a good deal. As a side note, the real life Polar Bears are doing just fine. The videos/ads where they’re seen on an ice floe without land or food to keep them alive makes it seem like they’re being screwed but um. It’s a lie.

I have the hardcover version of Middle School: How I Survived Bullies, Broccoli, and Snake Hill

It’s typically priced at 8.34 but I’m knocking that down to 8.00 dollars. It’s great deal. These books are timeless. I call them Super Fudge Books, because as far as I can remember these books are designed in a similar manner to Super Fudge and Beverly Clearly books (And yes, Super Fudge is made by Judy Blume).

I have a hard cover version of Wyatt Burp Rides Again (The Adventures of Jo Schmo)

I've never heard of this book before. It’s a short book so you reckon it’s not worth much but you’d be wrong! It’s roughly 10 dollars but we’re going to do you a favor and lower that price to 8 dollars instead! It’s in perfect condition and I’m giving this book away and I’m giving it away, because I think it’s worth it.

I have yet another hard cover book: This one is Middle School: Just My Rotten Luck by James Patterson

We can never have enough stories about misadventures in the school system. That’s because public education is absolutely horrible but at the very least the adversity it provides makes for fun stories and hey, you don’t exactly find a lot of childhood friends online do ya? (Do you?). This book is going for 11 bucks. Not a bad price for this book but I can do it one better. I’m selling it for 10 dollars! It’s in good condition. You’re going to like it!

This book here is Dork Diaries 7: Tales from a Not-So-Glam TV Star

I’m not familiar with the other 6 and I’m very familiar with the word dork. I don’t think my understanding of it is going to be pertinent though. I’m selling this book for 10 dollars and that is what it’s worth. You’ll buy it from me though, right?

I have The Invisible Library which was a book I bought for my sister for Christmas last year. I sure hope she read it. She does read, and I pride myself on finding books for her to read although I feel like I have more of an influence on what comics she reads than basic books. This book is worth 8 dollars and that’s what I’m selling it for.

Speaking of comics I have Caveboy Dave: More Scrawny Than Brawny for sale.

It’s a comic book, or a graphic novel (Comic Novel? Graphic Book?) or something. I actually looked through this a bit and it’s nice. If you liked The Croods, this should be right up your alley. In fact I’m so positive about this book that I’m charging slightly more than what’s worth. It’s being sold for 7 dollars. I’m bumping that up to 10.

There are listings for this toy car that go as far as 90 dollars. That’s intense. It’s the mint condition price and it’s very expensive. I don't have a mint condition version of this product. it’s still in the box though and the box is not in tatters. The adhesive on the plastic cover has worn away. The item itself is still untouched by human hands.

Because of this it’s not in perfect condition of the item I’m not selling it as a collectible and I will instead sell it as a normal item that’s kind of rare. I’m charging 45 dollars for this!
