This is a lot worse than Thomas imagined it being. This is so much worse.       He’s no stranger to death, or to funerals. That’s how it is when one is a Shadowhunter. Lilian Highsmith’s was admittedly upsetting, given the woman had been nothing but kind to Thomas and his friends when they were growing up, and Filomena’s because she’d died so tragically young. But theirs and Basil Pounceby’s funeral had nothing on Barbara’s.       They had nothing on Elias Carstairs’s, either.       Cordelia and Alastair were emotional wrecks, in their own ways. While Cordelia sought comfort in her mother and in James, putting on a brave face for the Enclave during the funeral, Alastair stood silently before his father’s pyre, his eyes swimming with a pain so palpable that Thomas felt his heart split in two. It was only afterwards, when they’d sent the last of those passing on their condolences away, that Alastair dragged Thomas into one of the drawing rooms of the Lightwood’s manor, and allowed himself to break.       Only now does Thomas realise that those funerals, Alastair’s grief over his father, the deep pang of having lost Barbara, were just distractions. Momentary pauses in which Thomas could forget, just for a little bit, about his own soul being ripped to shreds.       There’s no hiding from it now as he stands with his family, donned in white and marked in red. No pretending it never happened as his aunt Cecily openly weeps, his uncle Gabriel gasps shakily, and his cousin Anna grips his hand like a vice, her stony expression cracking at the edges when the Silent Brothers appear with a bier.       On it lies Christopher.       Thomas feels the ground open up beneath him.       This is so much worse.       So much worse.

20.7. von Vens nach Valgrisenche (Tag 26)

Im Schmetterlingsparadies - von Apollo geküsst

Morgens ein erster Blick von der Terrasse: der Waldbrand scheint gelöscht, nur noch dünne Rauchfahnen hängen in der Luft.

Nach einem vielfältigen Frühstück und etwas Wartezeit (Computerprobleme behindern die Rechnungserstellung) machen wir uns kurz vor 9 Uhr auf den kurzen und steilen Weg ins 1000m tiefer liegende Tal. Nach knapp 2 Std überqueren wir bei Avise die Dora Baltea, die sich tief ins Gestein hineingegraben hat.

Im Tal zeigt sich der Mont Blanc von seiner Rückseite.

Dann geht es wieder bergauf, zunächst auf schattigen Waldwegen, später dann auf trockenen, von der Sonne beschrieben Saumpfaden mit wenigem Baum- und Buschbestand. Ein heißer, trockener Wind weht beständig. Das macht auf Dauer sehr durstig. (Christophs App errechnet einen täglichen Flüssigkeitsverlust von 3 Litern.)

Der heiße Weg entpuppt sich als wahres Schmetterlingsparadies. Christoph ist ganz besonders begeistert von den vielen, sonst sehr seltenen Apollofaltern. (Zum Kuss des Apoll lest bitte am Ruhetag weiter)

Nachdem wir den höchsten Punkt hinter uns gebracht haben und unseren großen Durst in einer Bar mit Lemon Soda löschen (besonders köstlich mit 5 Eiswürfeln), fühle ich mich erschöpft und habe keine rechte Lust mehr auf die letzten 9 km und den damit verbundenen Aufstieg. Ich entscheide erst mal weiterzugehen solange der Weg flach bleibt. Trampen bzw. den späteren Bus zu nehmen, lasse ich als eine Möglichkeit offen. Im Gehen geht es mir besser, so dass ich doch den gesamten Weg zu Fuß gehe. Valgrisenche entpuppt sich als malerischer und gepflegter Bergort mit vielen Zelten für Ferienfreizeiten für Jugendliche.

Beim Aufstieg zum Hotel in Bonne werden wir von Jugendlichen mit Beatbox begleitet. Das macht die letzten Meter leichter.

Der Abend wird gemütlich, gutes Essen und ein Gute-Nacht-Bier im Salon.

Vague Assoziationen

Luhmann in Recife: vier volle Tage, nur vier volle und tolle Tage, die im Zentrum eines kleinen Forschungsprojektes von mir stehen, zu dem ich im November nach Recife fahren und recherchieren werde. Recife kenne ich wie meine Westentasche aka Vestingmantel, also unbeständig (immer ist was anderes drin). Recife nennt sich die Hauptstadt der Schiffbrüchigen, das stimmt, darum hat man mich auf Initiative von Ricardo Campos und João Mauricio Adeodato, Torquato Castro jr. und Pedro Parini dorthin für fast ein Jahr lang eingeladen, um dort Gastprofessor zu sein. Das war 2019, seitdem arbeite ich zur Anthropofagie. Jenes Jahr war der Moment, an dem die sieben mageren Jahre anfingen, zu verschwinden und die sieben fetten Jahre anfingen, zu erscheinen. Ich bin mehr als dankbar für dieses Jahr dort, mehr als dankbar heißt: bis heute bin ich überfordert von allem dem, was ich da gesehen habe und ich werde bis zu den Momenten, an denen ich keine Zettel mehr schreiben kann, dazu Zettel notieren, die zum Beispiel hier auf dem tumblr mit dem hashtag #Forschungsbericht versehen sind. Unter anderem passierte dort, was immer passiert, wenn ich irgendwo bin: Ich habe eine furchtbar fruchtbare Zeit und Kollegen sagen, ich würde mal wieder scheitern.

Der Nowak GT (Gran Tourismo) rief nach dem Jahr besorgt an, der will ja, dass ich nicht verkomme (dafür liebe ich ihn und schätze ihn unendlich!) und erzählte mir von meinem Scheitern dort, was mich gelinde gesagt ein wenig überraschte bis schockierte, aber das ist unser aller Alltag, dazu kann man sich immer Albertis Motto vor Augen führen: Ein fliegendes, beflügeltes Auge, dessen Nerven ausgerissen im Wind flattern und zu dem Alberti die Frage notiert: Quid tum? So sind sie, die Humanisten, die menschlichen Wesen, die nicht nur Bücher verschlingen, sogar auch Bilder und Wein, Luft und die Geliebten, beim Fahrradfahren verschlucken sie noch Insekten, hui geht es durch das Leben und dann ist es vorbei, selten zur passenden Zeit, denn so schön wie auf Erden kann es im Himmel gar nicht sein, sagt der Staatsrechtslehrer Christoph Schlingensief (sic!), Kollege aus alten Zeit bei Bazon Brock.

Eine der Folgeveranstaltung zu dem Gastaufenthalt in Recife fand gestern Abend nicht beim Italiener statt. Ich gehe schon auch zum Italiener, aber nicht, wenn es um Staatsrechtslehre geht. Gestern ging es um Staatsrechtslehre, nämlich Luhmann in Recife. Auf Initiative von Ricardo Spindola haben wir ein kleines Symposium mit Marcelo Neves und Gabriel Brito beim Graf 19 veranstaltet, das ist eine gute und anständige deutsche Eckkneipe in Bockenheim, mit Schnitzel und jenem Haufen seltsam frischer und doch noch schwerer Remoulade, den die Frankfurter gerne Grüne Sauce nennen und auf den sie sehr stolz sind. Die Brasilianer mussten also alle Frankfurter Schnitzel essen, nur ich durfte den Megateller paniertes Schnitzel mit Bratensauce und Käsespätzle haben (Brauteller, weil Luhmann aus dem Bierbrauergewerbe kam).

Hauptsache keine (alte/neue) Pizza und Hauptsache nichts von dem, wo sich deutsche Staatsrechtslehrer sonst gerne treffen, um sich behaglich und nicht so deutsch zu fühlen. Nicht mal Wein wurde erlaubt, nur Apfelwein, Bier oder Wasser.

Marcelo Neves ist einer von denen, die Luhmann nach Recife eingeladen haben. Ab und an kommen deutsche Professoren, schnappen sich eine Urkunde für einen Ehrendoktor oder einen Orden und sind dann bald wieder weg. Das hat Luhmann auch gemacht, aber Luhmann ist ein Magier und Zeitreisender: 4 volle Tage war er da! Das heißt: eine ganze kosmologische Zeit lang, die Zeit, die man braucht, damit sich alles einmal umdreht. Dafür hatte er Gründe und Abgründe, die er kannte. Die Passage, die ich im Werk von Luhmann für diese vier Tage als Schlüsselpassage sehe, das ist Zettel 80,2,2 aus seinem Zettelkasten, derjenige Zettel, auf dem er Begriff vague Assoziationen fallen lässt. Man muss wissen, dass Luhmann Schreiben für Kerben/ Kurven/ Dämmen/Dämmern hält, das schreibt er auf einem anderen Zettel. Schreiben ist für Luhmann eine graphische und choreographische, juridische Kulturtechnik, die nennt er an anderer Stellen wörtlich Kerben (wie in Curb your enthusiasm). Luhmann kennt Lexika und er weiß, dass man ihm vorhalten kann, dass er sich dort auf Zettel 80,2,2, verschreiben würde, dass man vague Assoziationen in Deutschland anders schreiben würde, eher so: vage Assoziationen. Er kerbt dennoch ein u ein. Eine Kuhle und coole nouvelle vague, kleiner Schuss french theory and paris, ein Tropfen vogue.

Zu diesem kleinen u werde ich in Recife in November vier Wochen recherchieren, d.h. Fotos sammeln, Interviews mit 'Überlebenden' führen, natürlich mit the Neves' two bodies, mit den Gebrüdern Neves, denn von allen Leuten gibt es immer doppelte, große und kleine Versionen. Nicht nur Marcelo Neves ist für Luhmanns Aufenthalt in Recife wichtig gewesen, sondern auch sein Bruder, dessen Name mir auf beschämende Weise jetzt nicht einfällt, obschon er mir schon mitgeteilt wurde: Der Zensor in meinen Kopf muss sagen: jetzt nicht Fabian, der ist jetzt nicht wichtig, erst später einmal. Die Gebrüder Neves, die beiden Grimms von Luhmanns Aufenthalt in Recife, haben Luhmann auf eine Bootsfahrt mitgenommen, die im Zentrum meiner Recherche steht.

Schon wegen der Bootsfahrt zwischen Warburg und Melchior (die zum Start der Jurastudiums von Warburg führte) interessieren mich solche Bootsfahrten: da sind die Leute im Vaguen unterwegs. Dass Carl Schmitt fast panische Angst vor dem Wasser hatte, das ist bekannt. Alle reagieren phobisch auf das Vague, aber alle anders, manche übersetzen die engen Stellen in Ängste, die anderen in Liebe, die dritten ins Gesetz, die vierten in Schlupflöcher, die fünften in Triumphbögen, die sechsten in Fangschrecken. Luhmann reagierte auf die Wellen und das Schaukeln, die Pointe sei jetzt schon verraten: fantastisch! und lässt ihn als den ironischen, deutschen Professor (den Bekennenden deutscher Gesellschaftstheorie) von bolischen Details in großen Bögen aufblitzen. Luhmann trank in Recife, was er in Europa nicht trank, unter anderem Caipirinha. Der fuhr in Brasilien auf See, durch Riffe zu Resten des atlantischen Urwaldes, dahin, wo die Küste heute noch aussieht wie zu der Zeit, als Franz Post sie für die Westindien Company malte und zeichnete. Man kann sagen, dass er dort eine furchtbar fruchtbare Zeit hatte, diese Zeit großartig fand - und zuhause die Leute schon die Telefonate vorbereiteten, um ihn nicht verkommen zu lassen. Dogmatik ist Technik, etwas zu erfahren, das ist schon Schilderung, auch Abschirmung und Beschirmung, aber auch Betrachtung, inklusive Perzeption, die in den Falten ist.

Gunther Teubner hat Vorarbeiten zu dieser Recherche gemacht, mit einigen Texten, etwa solchen zu den tausend Leibern der Könige, immer Texte, in denen es um das Verhältnis zwischen romanischen Ländern und germanischen Ländern, um nördlichere und südlichere Gefillde geht, um Frankfurt und Sizilien, immer um Derrida und Luhmann, also immer um das Verhältnis zwischen Dekonstruktion und System. Diese Arbeiten begleite ich in verschlimmerten Versionen ("Derrida, Luhmann, Steinhauer" oder aber "Uneinige Probleme mit reflexivem Recht"). Diese Begleitung von fremden Texten ist seltame Kumpanei, kläffende companionship mit Buchstaben, wie ein irrender Dominikaner (wie ein verlaufener Hund des Herren) begleitet ein Schreiben das andere. Aufzeichnende, aufweichende, aufquillende Lektüre am Marginalen der juridischen Kulturtechniken, nottiert von Spezialisten für knirschende und knarzende Wege: Für Geschichten und Theorien, an denen etwas nicht stimmt, aber dran ist.

Symposium gestern war super, voller Erfolg! Ricardo Spindola, Gabriel Brito und Marcelo Neves tun unendlich viel für die deutsche Wissenschaftskultur, es ist überwältigend.

Das u, eine These: Nachdem Luhmann mit der stoischen Lektüre zu de constantia nicht weiter kommt, fängt er an südamerikanische Literatur zu lesen, um zu leben und lesen, um zum Leben zu lesen und zum Lesen zu leben. Das Nachleben der Antike lässt ihn wie ein u abbiegen, zu Mantis Maturana und Viper Varela. Er möchte zwischen nomos und physis die Kurve kratzen - und entwickelt nun ein Vorstellung zu Beständigkeit/ Unbeständigkeit, die sich an der Biologie und am Begriff der Autopoiesis orientiert - er meint, die Mechanik loszuwerden und weiterhin stoisch weiterzukommen. Kam er auch, nach Recife zum Beispiel. Das Nachleben der Antike lässt uns immer leben, wenn auch asymptomatisch, also so, als ob wir überleben würden.

Was wäre der 12.08. ohne den 11.08.? Richtig – Nichts! Am 11.08. um 14 Uhr begann mein Urlaub und der sollte natürlich bei bestem Wetter professionell beginnen. Gleich nach der Arbeit schnappte ich mir meinen Kumpel um mit ihm einen anderen Kollegen zu besuchen. Hier starteten wir mit kaltem Kulmbacher. Im Anschluss zog es uns Richtung Freibad. Nicht um unsere Astralkörper von der Sonne verwöhnen zu lassen, sondern um uns dort dezent die Batterie abzuklemmen. Geplant war ein kleiner Umtrunk, der spätestens um 20 Uhr beendet sein sollte. Letztendlich wurde es spät. Sehr spät sogar und jeder war wieder bedient. Das Zeitfenster zum Aufstehen war allerdings etwas besser als in Rostock und somit konnte ich mal bis 7:00 Uhr schlafen, da es am Samstag erst um 7:55 Uhr losgehen sollte.

Im 9er eingestiegen musste ich tatsächlich erst mal ein Radler trinken, da ich mehr Brand hatte als die Kathedrale von Notre-Dame. Das Getränk war auch innerhalb von zwei Minuten in meinem Körper. Somit gab es einen fließenden Übergang zum Bier. Die Fahrt verlief ebenfalls Top und sehr flüssig. Auch nach Bremen kamen wir schnell und ohne Zwischenfälle. Drei Stunden vor Spielbeginn waren wir schon an unserem Zielort. Der Parkplatz befand sich allerdings ca. 1,5 km vom „Stadion“ entfernt und somit hatten wir noch etwas Fußmarsch vor uns. Der Weg, der uns zur Spielstätte bringen sollte, führte durch ein Waldstück und wäre eigentlich prädestiniert für einen Hinterhalt gewesen – wenn wir gegen einen ernstzunehmenden Gegner gespielt hätten. Aber in diesem Fall genossen wir die idyllische Landschaft. Vor dem Vereinsgelände des FCO befand sich ein Biergarten, der natürlich sofort angesteuert wurde! Drin saßen die üblichen Verdächtigen und nach ca. 3 Minuten Hände schütteln gab es dann endlich eine kühle Fassbrause. Allerdings nur 0,2 Liter. Eine halbe Stunde vor Spielbeginn, betraten wir dann auch mal das Areal der Gastgeber.

Das Spiel verlief von Anfang an nur in eine Richtung und nach gut einer halben Stunde hatte der Glubb schon sechsmal zugeschlagen. Die Hausherren hatten von Beginn an keine Chance. Trotzdem kämpfte der FCO bis zum Schluss und erzielte spät, aber verdient den Ehrentreffer.

Das eigentliche Highlight passierte neben dem Platz, als auf einmal der Bierstand geschlossen wurde. Grund hierfür war Bierdiebstahl. Dresden klaut am Bierstand Geld (01.10.22 in Bayreuth); Nürnberg klaut Bier. Zweiteres macht natürlich mehr Sinn. Da nun bei einigen aufgrund akuter Unterhopfung die Nerven blank lagen, entschloss man sich den Bierstand wieder zu öffnen. Diesmal allerdings unter dem wachsamen Auge der Exekutive. 20 Minuten vor Spielende zog es uns erneut in den Biergarten, wo wir noch ein paar Getränke zu uns nahmen. Im Anschluss ging es wieder zurück zu unserem Bus.

San Diego, Calif. • June 26, 2023 — The American Homebrewers Association® (AHA)—the national not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the hobby of homebrewing—announced the winners of the 2023 National Homebrew Competition (NHC) during its annual Homebrew Con™ conference in San Diego. 120 medals in 40 categories were awarded for the most outstanding homemade beer, mead, and cider. Six major awards recognizing overall brewing excellence were also presented. 

The NHC has long been recognized as the world’s largest stage for amateur homebrewers to showcase their skills, creativity, and passion for the craft of fermentation. The 2023 competition received 4,335 entries from 1,708 homebrewers across 50 states, Washington, D.C., and 13 countries. In total, 164,105 entries have been evaluated since the inaugural AHA National Homebrew Competition in 1979 in Boulder, Colo.

Am Morgen nach der Hochzeit wurden wir von Vogelgezwitscher und dem Muhen der Kälbchen geweckt. Und als die Sonne über die Hügel kroch wurde es direkt heiß in unserem Zelt. Also standen wir auf, packten zusammen und machten uns auf den Weg in das zehn Minuten entfernt gelegene Occidental. Dort hatten Christopher und Clare in einem Café einen Tisch zum Brunch reserviert und wir freuten uns nach der Feier auf einen guten Kaffee. Leider gab es neben dem guten Kaffee auch eine E-Mail von British Airways … unser Flug nach Hause am Montag war storniert worden. Alternativ wurde uns ein Flug vier Stunden später ab San José angeboten. Abgesehen davon, dass wir dann erstmal irgendwie dorthin kommen müssten, war die Connection-Time in London viel zu kurz. Nach einem ewig langen Telefonat mit BA fliegen wir nun einen Tag später, aber von San Francisco und mit ausreichend Zeit zum umsteigen in London.

Nach einem kurzen intensiven Aufreger, beschließen wir also das Beste daraus zu machen. Leider passte unsere Motel-Auswahl in San Francisco nicht so richtig zu den neuen Plänen. Ursprünglich wäre die letzte Nacht ja lediglich Mittel zum Zweck gewesen und deshalb von uns möglichst nah an der Autovermietung gewählt. Nur noch kurz Koffer packen, schlafen, duschen und Auto wegbringen. Nun wurden aus einer Nacht zwei Nächte und das in einer der schangeligsten Gegenden der Stadt. Beim check-in im Motel fragte ich direkt mal an der Rezeption, wie die Lage hier so ist und wie so oft in amerikanischen Städten, können zwischen zwei Blocks ganze Welten liegen. Aus dem Hotel raus rechts um die Ecke - don’t go there. Aus dem Hotel raus links um die Ecke - yeah you’ll be fine. Mit einem etwas mulmigen Gefühl machten wir uns also auf den Weg, um etwas essen zu gehen. Früher als sonst, um noch im Hellen nach Hause zu kommen. Und das japanische Restaurant, in dem wir landeten, stellte sich zum Glück als wahre Oase in dieser trostlosen Gegend heraus. Bei ruhiger Piano Musik, kühlem Bier und Limo und feinstem Essen beruhigten sich unsere Nerven wieder etwas und wir kamen gut nach Hause. Der kurze Abstecher zur Tankstelle, um noch Wasser für die Nacht zu kaufen, vermittelte uns allerdings einen ziemlichen klaren Eindruck davon, wie es eine Straße weiter so zugeht. Zelte von Obdachlosen auf dem Bürgersteig, die eingeschlagene Glastür am Eingang der Tankstelle und ein Dude, der mit einem Messer rumfuchtelte, während er sich mit einem Kollegen unterhielt, ließen uns zügig ins Motel zurückkehren und aufatmen, als wir mit Toni safe angekommen waren. Und auf den zusätzlichen Tag in der Stadt freuten wir uns jetzt richtig.
