At any other time, Walburga might have winced at the crude manners of someone who did not knock and wait to be admitted before entering someone’s study. But this was certainly not any other time. Fuelled by the fire in her belly, she seized the brass handle of the heavy oak door to Arcturus’s study and flung it open with such fury that it swung all the way inward and collided against the wall with such a crash that the wizard himself dropped his quill in surprise onto the ledger it hovered over, splattering the pages with ink. 

“What the devil-!” Arcturus snapped in surprise as he jumped in his seat at his desk. He looked round wildly, his face twisting in annoyance as he laid eyes upon his daughter-in-law standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips. 

“What the blazes do you think you’re playing at?!” 

“I might ask you the same question”

Arcturus sighed in frustration, turning his attention back to his ruined ledger entry. He reached for his wand, held safe in its golden desktop holder, and tapped the parchment several times to vanish the ink puddles. 

“If you’re here simply to spout nonsense-” 

“I am here-” Walburga marched forward to stand before her father-in-law over the desk. “-to find out precisely why you think it appropriate to entertain my son’s ridiculous thoughts of that Potter child. And, more importantly, why you did not see fit to discuss any of this with me before involving whichever Ministry dogsbody you’ve had running about procuring information on the matter!” 

In the face of Walburga’s fury, Arcturus simply continued his task of clearing up his ledger, only deigning to so much as look up at her once he’d completed his task and set his wand back in its holder. 

“Well?” Walburga continued to rage  when she did not receive an instant reply to her demands. “Are you going to care to answer me? Or do you intend to simply continue sitting there like some imbecilic breed of-” 

“I do not see why you bother to ask me why I did not involve you in any of these developments, when you have answered them perfectly well yourself this very moment” Arcturus finally snapped. “This is precisely why I did not consult you. Because as always, you fly into an unsightly temper tantrum rather than pause for so much as a minute to consider which way might be best to proceed.” 

Arcturus’s brutal candour paused Walburga in her tracks. She stiffened, holding her breath as she processed his words. 

“I do not see how anything to do with that Potter child could possibly-” 

“Lowering your volume does not make you sound any less petulant, Walburga, be assured of that. Now, sit down. And if there is a shred of sense in any of these accusations you have interrupted my day to present me with, I may perhaps be willing to discuss them”

Seething, Walburga forced herself to stifle the growing urge to smash every one of the heaving trophy cases lining the walls of the room and slowly lowered herself into the chair, perching on the edge of her seat as though it might swallow her whole at any moment.
