Declutter by Category: The Reset Method That Actually Works
Tumblr media
Spring is the ideal time to refresh your home, but the idea of a full clean-out can feel overwhelming. Most people default to tackling one room at a time—until halfway through, the clutter just shifts from place to place. That’s where a category-based method comes in: it’s more focused, less chaotic, and actually works.
Rather than going room by room, this approach breaks the task down by item type—papers, clothing, cleaning supplies, and so on. It gives you a clear sense of progress without needing to upend the whole house. And when done in small, weekly steps, it becomes easier to manage and stick with.
This reset is about creating calm without the chaos.
Why Decluttering by Category Works Better Than Room by Room
When you clear a single room, you often end up moving clutter into another. A hallway gets tidier, but now the guest room’s full of old coats. Sorting by category avoids this cycle—it means dealing with all your paperwork at once, no matter where it’s hiding.
It also stops the sense of false progress. Tidying the kitchen might look productive, but if junk drawers are stuffed or surfaces just look clearer without being cleared, the clutter’s still there. Focusing on one type of item removes it from your home entirely, not just from view.
This method also makes decisions simpler. Looking at five similar items in five different rooms makes it hard to notice duplicates. But lining them all up lets you see exactly what you have, what you need, and what can go.
The Three Most Overlooked Clutter Categories
Paperwork builds up quietly. It hides in drawers, under beds, in bags from the post office, or tucked in old folders “just in case.” Receipts, manuals, letters, expired vouchers—they add up. Start by gathering every piece of paper in your home and putting it in one place. Sort into shred, recycle, and keep. Anything you need to file, file. Everything else? Let it go.
Clothing often hangs around far longer than it needs to. Off-season coats, shoes that no longer fit, items you haven’t worn in years—they all take up space and mental energy. Pull everything out of wardrobes, drawers, boxes, and baskets. Try on, test zips, check condition. If you wouldn’t wear it tomorrow, consider donating it or recycling.
Cleaning products are rarely decluttered but often multiply without notice. Half-used sprays, expired bottles under the sink, dried-up wipes—all of them contribute to clutter and potential mess. Group all cleaning products together and check expiry dates. Anything with no label, odd smell, or damage should go. Keep only what works and what you actually use.
How to Make the Reset Stick
The trick is to avoid trying to do it all at once. Decluttering works best in short, focused sessions. This method splits the work into weekly goals, so you’re not staring down a whole house full of tasks at once.
It also helps to set a clear finish point for each category. That might be dropping donations off by Saturday, recycling shredded paper immediately, or using up half-empty bottles before buying more. These small goals keep the momentum going.
Storing less means storing smarter. When you only keep what’s needed, storage becomes easier. The paper fits in one folder. Clothes hang neatly. Cleaning supplies sit on a single shelf, not scattered in every cupboard.
This isn’t about creating a show-home. It’s about knowing what you have, using what you need, and freeing up space that works for how you live now.
Weekly Printable Checklist for a Category-Based Spring Declutter
Week 1: Paperwork Reset
Gather papers from every room: mail, receipts, magazines, notebooks.
Shred anything with sensitive info you don’t need.
Recycle old receipts, junk mail, and expired documents.
File or scan important paperwork into labelled folders.
Week 2: Clothing Clear-Out
Pull out all clothes—drawers, wardrobes, storage boxes, laundry piles.
Try on anything you haven’t worn recently.
Sort into keep, donate, repair, or recycle.
Wipe down wardrobes and re-fold them neatly.
Week 3: Cleaning Supply Streamline
Empty cupboards, baskets, storage under sinks.
Check expiry dates and test items for effectiveness.
Dispose of unused, empty, or broken containers responsibly.
Group similar items and store them in clear, accessible zones.
Week 4: Bonus Round – Whatever Needs It Most
Choose your biggest pain point: tools, books, toiletries, kitchen drawers.
Set a 30-minute timer and start sorting.
Keep only what you use, enjoy, or need.
Donate or dispose of anything broken, duplicated, or outdated.
FAQs
Why is it better to declutter by category instead of room?
It helps you see everything at once, avoid duplicates, and stay consistent in decision-making. That way, you're not just shifting clutter from one spot to another.
What if I don’t have time to do a full category in a week?
Do what you can. Even ten minutes a day adds up. The idea is to make consistent progress, not create extra pressure.
How do I keep the clutter from coming back?
Set limits. If something new comes in, something else goes out. Revisit each category every few months with a quick check-in to reset.

It's mad at people calling Jason messy hours again

Look me in the eyes and tell me any aspect of this room that Jason has control over is messy
Even when living in a condemned building with ✨️no alfred to influence him✨️ he keeps his space neat and tidy and always has.
There's also plenty of examples showing his rooms as red hood are clean + I do not respect the boy wonder comic even remotely in this aspect + beyond boy wonder there's still more examples of him living neat and tidy rather than messy

I really want to know what just. Inspired you to make such a long fic about preggo Yuu. Was it baby fever, or just cute baby animals?
A mix of baby fever (despite only having two fur babies and no biological kids), cute baby animal pics and videos, and the sheer shenanigans of the monster boys and staff panicking because the baby is coming 😂
It was also an interesting idea to work with figuring out how each dorm might chip in and help prepare for the arrival of a baby, let alone how mama!Yuu's maternal instincts would kick in for some of the boys *cough* Riddle *cough* and just being a reassuring presence for them.
Also, who wouldn't want to see Grim behaving like a protective kitty who climbs into the cradle and naps with the baby or gives chimera kitty kissies to calm the tiny bab 🥹
Just...too much cuteness and me trying to translate the ideas into words 😅 Hence why it's taking so long and feels like it's going to be much longer than what I've written before!

I so wasn't aware that you're also watching Penny/snapcube and when you posted the lawyersona it was really like "the crossover I didn't know I needed". It was just such a delight and so wholesome And the animation has been living in my head rent free since then, it's just the perfect gif (and all the respect for all the work you put into it!)
WEEEEEE ive been watching the occasional VODs every once in a while for maybe 1-2 years now! mostly just vods; i dont have twitch bc im not usually big into streamers but penny's swag Streamour Demeanour grew on me pretty fast! cool to see someone who's known of my art previously who is also a snapcube fan :]
and tysm i appreciate the kind words... makes me very satisfied that people liked the animated sprite so much! animation isn't my strength as someone who struggles with the tedious and repetitive LMAO but super happy that i pushed thru and finished it up. glad you enjoy it :3

you were taking birth control at 11/12 years old? what the fuck
I’m guessing this is a response to some tags i left on a post.
birth control pills are not just used to prevent pregnancy, it also regulates hormones and makes periods lighter and can even stop them completely.
i got my first period at 11 years old and they got heavier and heavier. i couldn’t handle it, i was changing my tampon every fucking 30 minutes to an hour and making a diaper with night pads and still bleeding through my pants. i would layer like three pads on top of each other. i was bleeding so. much. and these periods would last for weeks, one even lasted for 2 months. i looked pale, i was weak and dizzy all the time. i never had enough energy to get through PE. i even fainted once. my grades were going down because i couldn’t focus. i was VERY anemic. so the option was either i die or go on the pill. yes, going on the pill so young isn’t great because it affects bone development and other stuff but i really didn’t have another option. my doctor didn’t even consider something else. my iron levels were so incredibly low. i probably should’ve gone to a doctor sooner. people asked me if i was sick, i was so pale. so i went on the pill and took iron pills and i got better and was incredibly happier. i’m also trans and periods cause dysphoria so it was nice to have no or light periods. i was not being a slut or whatever, i was just a kid not wanting to bleed to death.

Stash Organizing Day! I finally got all the furniture into my bedroom after a year of living here (long story) and came to the conclusion that it was time to Stop storing my yarn in trashbags (mostly, I have to get a couple more plastic totes). Photo dump and rambling under the read more.
Tumblr media
Here is all my yarn that I don't consider an "active" project (MOSTLY, there's an active project in the pink tote bag (Shawl 13) but I wanted to put up the extra colours I was finished with and it was easier to carry the whole thing in).
The already filled plastic tote has all my wool yarns in it (also in ziplock bags because these totes aren't airtight). I'll eventually organize them better and lay them all out for a photo too but for now they're staying Contained. Instead I dumped all my acrylic yarn out of the trash bag it was in.
Tumblr media
Before starting Blanket 10 my acrylic yarn took up about twice as much room as it does now. The big pile on the left is all the scraps from it that I'm undecided as to what to do with them. Other than that mess, along the top is some Lion Brand Jeans yarn I had bought for a striped sweater that I swatched for and never made. Below that is all my fingering weight acrylic, mostly Loops and Threads Woollike. The big cake is one of the 300 gram Lion Brand Mandala cakes.
Tumblr media
Also acrylic but kept in the very cute Purple Hawaiian Hello Kitty Tote Bag(TM) is a metric fuck ton of Lion Brand Re-Spun. I knit one strip out of like 9 for a blanket before realizing I wasn't having fun and it hurt my hands and I didn't like it. I don't know if I want to frog it or not or what to do with this yarn so I've just kinda been sitting on it, I might end up with another granny stitch blanket.
For now my acrylics are all staying in the trash bag, I currently only have one other plastic tote and I'm going to use it for my cottons.
Tumblr media
By weight the majority of my cotton yarns are Hobbii brand Cotton Kings Sultan. I like knitting with them, they're pretty, I'm using the bottom three as decor in my room. Right now I only have projects set out for two of them (the peachy orange one and the two rainbows (i bought them with the intention of using them together in a huge brioche project and still don't have a pattern picked out lmao)), but it won't be hard for me to find more lace doily patterns to make giant. Most of the scrap (middle bottom) is also from Sultan cakes, and directly above it is some fingering weight cotton also Cotton Kings brand.
On the right bottom is all that's left of my Knit Picks Dishie out of my original purchase of something like a dozen and a half balls. I did give a couple balls of it to my aunt but most of it I used, I really really Really like Dishie. Finally on the right top is my size 10 crochet cotton.
I didn't grab photos of all my bulky yarn bought for suffies because I'm honestly not sure what to do with it and for now most of it is staying in it's cardboard box. Bad Yarn Gets The Box.
There's also the pile of Shame. Some of them are completed projects I don't have a good storage place for, most of them are incomplete projects. There are several projects I need to either frog, finish, give away, or throw out and I just do not want to decide right now. There's also at least one shawl in that pile that I finished while living at my old house and never got to block because of space concerns and simply haven't. Blocked it even tho I have space now.
I Think that is all of my yarn that isn't currently being used for a project. It feels really good to finally get everything organized and out of my actual work area. I still have some things I need to find places for (the shame pile and all my sewing materials mainly) but I got rid of the Yarn Mess by literally hiding it under my bed <3
