Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas is a 2013 French-German historical drama loosely based on the 16th century Hans Kohlhase. Mads plays Michael Kohlhaas a horse dealer who gets into a feud with a local baron, leading to an ill-fated revolt.

A Royal Affair is a 2012 Danish historical drama and romance set in the 18th century court of King Christian VII of Denmark. Mads plays Dr Johann Struensee, the mentally ill King's ill-fated physician who has an affair with the King's wife.

Bastarden (The Promised Land) is a 2023 Danish-German-Swedish historical drama set in 1755. Mads plays Kahlen, an impoverished Danish officer who obtains permission to build property on barren land but runs into trouble with a local magistrate.

Flammen & Citronen (Flame & Citron) is a 2008 Danish historical drama set after the Nazi invasion of Denmark. Mads plays Jørgen Haagen Schmith, a member of the Danish resistance.

Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is a 2009 French historical romantic drama. Based on a 2002 fictional novel, the plot follows the rumoured ill-fated love affair between French fashion designer Coco Chanel and Russian composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky - played by Mads.

Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is a French film directed by Jan Kounen. It is based on the fiction novel Coco and Igor by Chris Greenhalgh (2002), influenced by the rumor of an affair between Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky. The film is based in Paris in 1920, the same year Chanel No. 5 was created. Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld helped the production of the film. The filmmakers had access to Chanel’s archives as well as Coco Chanel’s apartment at 31, rue Cambon, Paris.

The film stars Mads Mikkelsen (Igor Stravinsky) and Anna Mouglalis (Coco Chanel).

Even though the film is fiction, it is one of my favourite films. It’s sexy, beautiful, and has an art deco influence and I loved the opening to the film, the Rite of Spring.

Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky indeed crossed paths, in 1920 Chanel was introduced to Stravinsky and she found out that he and his family needed a place to live. She invited the family to stay at her home, the Bel Respiro, Garches, Paris, until they found somewhere else to live. They arrived in September and left in May 1921. Stravinsky in real life cheated on his wife, and had many affairs, whether or not he had an affair with Chanel is still a mystery.

Are you watching the films you were playing in? Are your kids watching your films?

I often watch them before the premiere because the director shows it to you and you might have the chance to comment on a couple of things regarding editing stuff. So maybe twice I watch my films and that’s it. My kids don’t give a lot of critic. They either look happy or bored. There was a really nice example with the French film „Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky” and we had an opening in Cannes and my son was there and he was very unimpressed by the whole red carpet stuff and we were sitting on the fancy seats and, I mean, of course he was eight years old and it was French and he had no idea what was going on up there so after five minutes he was sleeping so heavily and he was snoring – and it was just fantastic! That was his reaction to his dad on the big screen.

Dandy and socialite, athlete and drinker, intellectual, wit, friend of Picasso, Coco Chanel, Sergei Diaghilev, Aldous Huxley and a good hundred geniuses of the 20th century – and the universally recognized genius himself – Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky. In 1910, Diaghilev invited Igor Stravinsky to write music for a ballet to be staged as part of the Russian Seasons, and the next three years were perhaps the most "star" period in the lives of both. During this time, Stravinsky wrote three great ballets, each of which turned Diaghilev's Russian Seasons into a cultural sensation on a global scale - The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1911-1913).
