Switching to Compostable Dog Waste Bags is a step in the right direction, but they must be disposed of correctly to make a real environmental impact. Regular home composting is not suitable for pet waste, as it may contain harmful bacteria that require high heat to neutralize. Instead, look for municipal composting programs that accept pet waste or consider investing in a pet waste composting system designed to safely break down organic matter. Avoid flushing these bags, as they are not meant to dissolve in water like toilet paper. Proper disposal ensures the bags decompose effectively without harming the environment.

Mary Jane - Calex
‘What if Alex and Casey were neighbours in a small town’
I feel like the Alex Cabot girlies need some more trope shit. So here I am, instead of writing my long fics. Again.
Alex working as a state social worker in Texas > Casey is bail bondsperson.
They both live in a trailer park, Alex has wind-chimes and assorted pots outside > Casey likes to put her cigarettes in them to ‘compost’.
Alex finds Casey rude, she’s always throwing parties, cook outs. Her family aren’t exactly the sort Alex was used to.
Alex watches Casey hit baseballs for her dog each night.
Casey watching Alex leave for work in her form fitting suits and Atleast three tote bags every morning > drinking her morning coffee, yet still manages to throw in a wolf whistle. Which Alex hates to admit she loves, sticking her middle fingers up.
Casey’s dog unfortunately loves Alex and will often be found sleeping on the rug when she leave her trailer door open in the sun.
Alex buys him, his own bowl for when he visits.
Casey has two single mismatched deck chairs outside her trailer, one that just so happens to make it onto Alex’s porch steps. Alex likes to work on case files in the open air.
Casey will often come trudging up the gravel from her bike with a fat lip or blackened eye. Alex working to the sound of crickets and a flash light catches Casey’s attention.
Alex offers to clean Casey up one night > she’s noticed Casey doesn’t look after herself much. Always wearing sunglasses to shield her eyes but never hiding the marks that littered her arms as she slouched around in marked vests and wangler jeans. Bruises visible despite her many tattoos.
They each have no decency > Alex will sunbathe on the porch and Casey will walk around shirtless.
Casey takes to calling Alex her ‘firefly.’
Casey starts sitting out at night with Alex, when she’s not away working. She notices one night that Alex has a tramp stamp > it’s a Korean decal from Alex’s summers with a working father.
Alex later teaches Casey how to drink soju < Casey teaches Alex how to open a bottle with her teeth.
Casey starts helping Alex with her case work, offering her insight into the youth as it’s where she’d grown up - unlike Alex who only moved her to prove a point to her dad.
Casey wears chunky silver rings. Alex likes to steal them and see the size difference.
Alex loves watching people from in the community come to Casey for help > putting up guttering, fixing a kids bikes. Alex even ends up helping make costumes for the local school that Casey coaches at.
They’re in love.
Alex eventually convincing Casey to resit her highschool diploma > Casey likes to wear Alex’s glasses when they are ‘studying’. < She refuses to get her own.
Casey gets Alex high for the first time since she was a teenager.
Casey drives Alex everyday so she can avoid the bus. Alex has her own helmet they found in a local charity shop.
Casey finding out Alex is actually rich and being wildly confused > their first proper fight is when Alex’s grandmother sends for her to attend a boat party.
Casey grumbling because Alex had ‘lied to her’.
Some disgruntled parents from one of Alex’s caseloads show up and put the windows through on her trailer.
Casey scares them off and cleans up > that’s how Alex finds her, hunched over sweeping up glass. The blonde with her heels in her hand as the redhead yells at her to mind her feet.
Casey making Alex take a shower, get out of her silk gown whilst she delt with the police > she has friends on the force, they’ll be round tomorrow.
Casey comforting Alex as she spirals. Tired of fighting for people who don’t respect her or their children. Alex asks to stay in Casey’s trailer that night.
Alex finally kissing Casey at her trailer door > Casey had walked her the four steps between their homes.
The night is dry and they can hear foxes and wildlife around them. Alex used to hate how quiet it was when she moved > she now has four dead bolts on her door she doesn’t use… not since Casey started looking out for her.
Alex slowly crawling into Casey’s bed, pleasantly surprised by the light bed sheets. Casey owns a lot of things… there’s post cards and photos on every surface.
Casey slipping in beside her, large arms circling Alex’s neck > Alex who simply burrows into the hold happily kissing the other woman’s arms, tracing her tattoo as they fight sleep.
Casey has a blue ‘A’ sewn into the inside of her leather jacket > Alex put it there, whilst ‘mending’ her jeans.
Alex starts coming to Casey’s cook outs > she is not allowed near the kitchen.
Casey’s family love Alex > she is now seen round town talking to massive bikers constantly.
They are a regulars at the local diner > Often walking there in the mornings. Casey picks up the bike whilst Alex finishes the paper.
They are happy.
Alex learns to roll for Casey.
Alex settles as a private advocate for people who need legal aid outside of the system. Casey surprised her with a tiny upper level office in town for their anniversary.
They combine trailers > really why get rid of the space?
Alex cuts Casey’s hair on the decking outside the trailer.
Alex surprises Casey by getting her name tattooed > it’s behind her ear.
Alex wears Casey’s jacket more than Casey and Casey wears Alex’s glasses when reading in bed every night. The dog sleeps at the bottom at Alex’s insistsnce.
Casey wakes up most mornings to Alex snuggled away with the dog.
Casey asks Alex to marry her after they attend an event in town. They’re walking down by the docks.
Alex wears her ring as a necklace so she can still garden > Casey has started digging her flower beds. < or she would have lost it by now.
Casey leaves Alex sticky notes whenever she’s called away for work. She calls every time she sees a phone booth.
Alex still cleans up Casey’s cuts > Casey still cat calls her each morning.
Casey quit smoking but Alex will still sneak a joint with her now and then.
Casey always has a hand on Alex. On her thigh, wrapped round her waist as they have a weekly cards night with friends.
Alex happily marks Casey for all to see > she’s seen how people look at her at the local bar.
They’re happy and in love.

I shaved my dog, put some ear shit in his ears, and brushed his teeth
I cleaned my (horse) riding boots
I watered some of my plants
I potted/repotted some of my plants
I clipped my cat's nails & gave her medication
I took some dead plants outside to put in the compost tomorrow
I made plans for tomorrow
I found a new tea combo that I would die for (I forgot the name of one of the teas but I'll put it in my next ask if you're interested)
I spent significantly less time online than normal
I ate breakfast (it took ~2 hours, but I did it)
I cooked up a bowl of chicken and rice for late lunch and finished the whole thing (it sounds bland but the shit I cook it with makes it really fucking good)
I took all my medication on time and replaced the stuff I ran out of
I replaced the trash bag in the trash can in my room + took 2 other bags of trash out to the bins
I updated my planner and marked the date of my next appointment
I cleaned a section of the floor in my room & vacuumed a section of the kitchen/dining area

Compost Pile

This year I started composting
I didn’t buy an expensive compost turner. Just put some old tomato stakes in the ground and wrapped some chicken wire around it to close the area off. But I don’t even think that’s totally necessary 🤷♀️
This is the layering system I’ve been using:

Thankfully I work at a restaurant and have a bucket set aside for when the kitchen has scraps from food prepping - we are flush with “green” material.
Green material=veggie and fruit scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds
Brown material=torn up cardboard, leaves, mulch
You can find more information online but we kept it really simple. I am using an old dog crate to kind of filter the pile and store the soil. This won’t happen for awhile but I’m already starting to see some dark rich soil under the scraps, lots of worms!
Bonus - I have significantly less trash. No point in filling a plastic trash bag with things that can decompose naturally back into the earth!

EVENT: Earth Week
LOCATION / TIME: all around Merrock
IC DATE: April 19-27, 2025
OOC DATE: April 19-27, 2025
The time has come to celebrate Earth Week! We wanted to give everyone an opportunity to do fun things around town that helped make the earth a better place, and also give you the chance to do a little cleaning and tidying of our public spaces and waterways, to help make our town that much more beautiful.
WORKSHOPS:
build-a-house -- stop by Creekside, where the lumber has been donated, to learn how to build a number of birdhouses and insect hotels!
how to compost -- at the community garden, we'll be hosting work shops that teach you how to compost and make the world a better place.
butterfly garden -- learn how to plant a beautiful garden at Lavender Lane that will attract local species of butterflies and help grow the population.
how to upcycle -- join the folks at Treasure Chest as they show you a variety of fun upcycling projects from things that can be found in your backyard (or trash)!
bee keeping -- whether you want to start a colony yourself, or you're just interested in finding out how it works, head to Harmony Ranch to listen to their bee keepers (and get free honey!).
native plants -- at the State Park, you can learn about plants that are native to our area of Maine, and purchase a few to plant at home, too!
FUN THINGS FOR EVERYONE
scavenger hunt -- pick up a scavenger hunt sheet at Town Hall and wander around Earth Week looking for all of the things that you need to find!
gardening time -- snatch up a plot at the community garden, and get started a little early on planting everything you want for summer time!
cooking classes (for minis, too!) -- there will be fun cooking demonstrations at various restaurants in town, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients only.
nature walks -- join the rangers on nature walks through the State Park to see the very best signs of spring coming into our little town.
arts & crafts for kids -- at the Children's Museum, we will have a number of crafts that can be made from recycled materials, teaching that everything has a second use.
LET'S CLEAN OUR TOWN
cityview park -- grab a garbage bag and clean up trash, help clean the benches & fountain, clean out the flower beds for city workers to plant new pretty things!
merrock railway -- walk along the tracks that run through town and clear away any brush or garbage that might have made it through the winter (no trains will be running!).
the marina -- crew will be wandering the marina with gloves and waders for anyone who wants to clean up along the docks.
the swimming beach -- let's get the beach ready for the swimming season! clean up any trash, help clean up the snack shack, and enjoy some sun.
aster playground -- the equipment could use a new coat of paint and some tightening up to make everything safe & ship shape, plus the grass raked & flower beds cleaned!
ruff around park -- garbage needs picked up (and emptied!), with brush cleaned up and the park tidied up so the dogs can run again.
black creek -- bundle up, grab waders, and do a little cleaning up and down along black creek, especially around the swimming hole.
lake malory -- there's a lot of garbage, logs and dead plants gathered at he edges of our town's lake. clean it up so fishing season is that much more fun!
the meadows -- clean up any trash that you might see, and try your hand at lining the athletic fields, repairing the bleachers, and painting any equipment!
While we have given everyone in town lots of things to do and enjoy, please note that the purpose is to get out in nature, help our earth, and make our green spaces that much better! If you want to do something that isn't listed above? Go for it! Maybe someone else would really love to do it with you. As long as it helps our earth. xx
ADMIN NOTE: There will be a thread / plot call post in the OOC blog to let others know you want to get involved! But open starters are highly encouraged, as well.

just a boring brain dump while I rest
Well it's very nice out and not so fucken wimdy as it has been so I decided to get started on yard work. Which, at the end of April is A Lot. The grass is high enough that I'll have to use a weed whacker. Everything else is just growing, especially the viney weeds, the Rose of Sharon which multiplies like wet gremlins every year, and the Actual Plants. I kind of did a little bit everywhere, I had to cut stuff back to get to the back of the property and I need to get that taken care of because it won't be long before I will once again not be able to get back there due to overgrowth. Though, this year, I have more time on my hands because I also told my boss I am not doing any of the live-in dog sits she had requests for. I sure could use the money but it's not enough to warrant the distraction, really, and if I keep at it I will sell a bunch of my stuff and have a little bit of income after all. So I cut back some stuff and raked up part of it and put it in a trash can. I also came across the bags of compost and peat I had bought a few years back after i'd read Square Foot Gardening and had convinced myself that this time I could and would start and maintain a garden, for reals this time. So, convinced once again I could make a better go of it this year with seeds I purchased 3 or 5 weeks ago that should have been started indoors before I'd even returned from Germany but instead were still sitting in their packets on the table, I decided to fill up the standing planter I'd assembled last year, after sitting in my basement for 3-10 years and had tried unsuccessfully to grow something or other in there. Kale, I think. actually I think it grew but stopped when it was still small and then just keeled over or kaled over, as it were. I forget. I'd blocked off 2/3 or the planter with bricks and filled a third with the small amount of dirt that I had. Because I didn't feel like hauling sacks of dirt from my car to the back yard. So this time I used the peat moss and the compost from the garage. The compost bag had one of those perforated tops and had busted open and some mice had made a home in there with some pink insulation stuff? idfk. Maybe they lived in and ate the compost? idk but the meeces were long gone. Still, what a pain picking little tufts of old insulation out of there. It's probably toxic and since I put it in with my plants I will probably grow mutant veggies and I'll grow a tail on my forehead or something. who even cares at this point bc groceries are so expensive. Anyway I had also bought some marigolds bc they are bug deterrents and are good to plant with vegetables, so I put them in there first. I suppose I could start some seeds indoors and plant them when they're newly sprouted, idk. I'll read the packets. I actually have another cedar planter I can assemble but I don't have much dirt.
Anyway I got hot and thirsty and tired so here I am in my chair with a heating pad on my lower back typing out all this exciting shit no one is going to bother reading. But seriously it's either this or a screed about Saturday night which actually would be more interesting but I do like my friend and there is always the odd chance she pops in here and I should let bygones be bygones because she will be gone soon and I am sad for her. (it's a visa thing)
So I am just going to have to keep chipping away at the outside stuff, which is tiring and annoying and sneezy work but at least it's outdoor physical work. I also of course have a shit ton of indoor work I also have to chip away at when I'm not outside. Including my kitchen which is just a neverending mess! I clean it up so I can make a meal and then it's dirty again and and and I just can't get it to a manageable place. But I really need to make some decent food today or tomorrow. OH and I cut some dandelion leaves from the yard. Since I have no dog and I don't use weed killer, and it's in my back yard, they should be fine. I washed them. Hey, free food. Americans are unhinged about lawn maintenance. they put all these chemicals on their grass and get rid of all the 'weeds' which, some of them, like dandelions and purslane, are great in salads. You can also eat dandelion flowers, though I never have. Anyway. Just trying to see if I can get some free or almost free food in my back yard.
The sad thing is that I like gardening, though I am not knowledgeable, but when I was young and interested, I didn't have the time to dedicate to it, and now that I do have the time, I am old and decrepit and don't have the experience to make much of anything happen for sure or the wherewithal to learn or try very hard. Because that's just one part of my garden, the rest, for as small as my yard is, is a lot of maintenance (again I refuse to use round up or weedkiller beyond some vinegar in places and I do have a lot of native plants mixed in that makes it tricky).
anyway, this has been a post.

It's not yet noon, and this is already a fantastic day.
On Thursday I pedaled my bicycle downtown to work. When I bike I leave my regular wallet, with its many cards, at home. Instead I put cash, a Visa card and my driver license in a thin plastic case normally used for business cards. It fits my pocket better. If I lose it I don't have as many things to replace.
Somewhere in Minneapolis, on a busy road (with bike lanes) my wallet fell out of my pocket. I had recently been to an ATM, so there was over $100 in there. I felt awful. As soon as I noticed I shut off the Visa via a phone app.
I had my name and phone number on the case. You never know, there can be nice people out there. Using my label maker also makes me happy.
Early this morning, while at the dog park, my phone rang. A guy found my little wallet while he was bicycling and wanted to get it back to me. Quickly I left the park to meet him at a farmers market in Richfield, along the route I pedaled to work on Thursday.
We met up. He handed me the wallet. Everything was there!
I tried to give him some cash. "At least let me pay for your lunch today," I suggested. He refused the offer. He commented that the label with my name and phone number was a fantastic idea. He planned to do the same thing. Had my label maker been in my truck I would have insisted he take it.
When I got home I saw my neighbor spreading black dirt and grass seed in his yard. I asked where he filled his trailer full of dirt. He told me there's a composting facility a few miles from our houses that sells topsoil. It's inexpensive, he added, and they fill truck and trailers for you so you don't need to load it yourself.
Damn! Each year I usually buy ten or so bags of black dirt from a home improvement store. I use the dirt to fill holes one of the dogs dug or various low spots in the yard. Those bags cost $3 to 4 each.
The half yard of soil (it nearly filled my pickup truck bed) was $13. Holy cow, how had I not known about this place all these years?
I'll add some grass seed to the soil and spread it around the yard later today. For now I think I'll treat myself to a nice lunch then take a nap.
