Tanaka Miyako can't believe it.
She's been grouped with Akako Ran again.
What's worse is that there were two more members this time—both of them in Akako's circle of friends.
She has nothing against Akako personally. She'd even go as far as to say she more than tolerates him after he saved their Biology project, resulting in an A+.
However, that was then and this is now.
It's been a week since the presentation, and she'd spent some time learning more about Akako Ran.
Why? Well, if she were to be teamed up with anyone in this class, she'd preferably choose him.
He's diligent, and now she adds reliable to the list.
But, as Miyako soon discovers, he's also a beacon of trouble. 
Most of it isn't caused by him per se, but by his friends.
Her eyes peer over to the girl on her left swinging her legs absentmindedly.
Amino Hikari.
She's a chatterbox whose dream is to become an idol, something Miyako deems ambitious but ultimately frivolous. 
It doesn't help that she's a rule-breaker, always sporting more jewelry than the school allows.
Just this Monday, Amino decided to "borrow" a key to the music room to practice her singing, resulting in a school-wide search for the missing key.
However, the boy on Miyako's right ticks her off even more.
Unno Kai. The lazy genius.
The type of person Miyako hates most.
Despite zoning out or sleeping through classes, he consistently ranks second in their grade. It's infuriating. 
She bets that he has no real aspirations but will still land a reputable job without even trying. 
That deadbeat once rewrote the entire school server's firewall during a computer science project, crashing the network and earning a two-day suspension—though he seemed more pleased than anything to get a break from classes.
"Hey, Ran-chan, you should join us for karaoke this weekend," Amino chirps, twirling a strand of her long, dyed blonde hair. "Kai's finally agreed to come, so it's gonna be fun!"
Unno, lounging with his arms crossed behind his head, smiles languidly. "Only because you promised free food."
Akako chuckles, giving a thumbs up. "Sounds like a plan. I'm always up for karaoke."
Miyako rolls her eyes. Ah, really. This is the worst.
"But honestly, I can't believe the sub left us with an assignment on the first day of group work!" Amino bemoans, slumping on her chair with a light frown.
Akako sighs, nodding. "Right? Who expects us to research an entire political system in one class period?"
"Well, maybe if you all stop your unproductive chattering, we can actually complete it on time," Miyako chimes in, rubbing her temples in frustration. 
She's tired of always being the one to carry every single group project that comes her way, especially when it's with multiple people.
She thought that things might change if it's with Akako. Guess she was too naive.
Just then, the door slides open, and their substitute Social Studies teacher, Kondo-sensei, steps in.
"Hey, everyone," he greets, smiling apologetically. "Sorry for leaving class so suddenly earlier. Turns out I have an urgent family matter I gotta attend to right now." 
"Eh? Sensei, does that mean free time?" Nishiyama Chiasa, a fellow deviant like Amino, piques up, eyes sparkling excitedly.
Kondo-sensei pauses in packing his bag to glance at her. 
"Sadly, no," he replies, sounding notably more hesitant than before. "Another teacher will watch over you in my stead. And, uh… it's Takahashi-sensei."
Silence fills the room.
Then a collective groan gets let out.
"Sorry guys," Kondo-sensei chuckles meekly.
Another round of protests and complaints erupts.
"Ugh, seriously?!"
Amino remarks, scrunching up her hair in dread.
Unlike the laid-back Kondo-sensei, Takahashi-sensei is known for being a strict enforcer of school rules. Miyako respects her.
Amino darts her eyes around her bracelets nervously before she settles on grabbing Akako's hands, clenching them firmly like they were lifelines. "Ran-chan, please, you gotta hide my jewelry for me!"
"Again?" Akako raises an eyebrow, clearly amused. 
Damn this group.
"Amino-san, you know the rules. Why do you insist on wearing so much jewelry in the first place?" Miyako can no longer hold back a disapproving comment.
Amino scratches her cheek, laughing sheepishly. "I can't help it! I like to make myself look bling, you know?"
Miyako sighs deeply, shaking her head. She's had enough of this already.
"Please, Ran-chan! I'll owe you big time!" Amino just goes right back to begging, clutching Akako's hands tighter.
Akako mock-ponders, purposefully trying to stall time. "Hm…"
"Ran-chan!" Amino whines, sounding absolutely desperate.
But Akako merely snickered.
"Well then, see you guys on Friday," Kondo-sensei states, waving a hand at the students as he exits the classroom, closing the door with a faint thump.
"Ran-chan, I'm going to die!" Amino sounds like she's about to cry.
Akako immediately bursts into laughter. "Alright, alright," he relents, gradually calming down.
Instantly, Amino beams. 
She quickly starts taking off her jewelry—a stack of glittering bracelets, a set of delicate necklaces, and an assortment of shiny earrings. 
Miyako has to admit, the sheer amount of jewelry Amino manages to wear is almost impressive.
Akako pulls out a notebook, scoops up the jewelry, and, with a practiced push of his palms, presses it against the front cover.
The pieces phase into the surface, turning flat like the maroon-colored board. It's as if they had become part of the book's design, blending in seamlessly.
"Thanks a bunch, Ran-chan!" Amino cheers, her exuberance returning full force.
"What an ugly design for a cover, though," Unno remarks, snorting.
Akako sighs, putting his notebook back inside his bag. "You can say that again."
Miyako watches, trying to wrap her head around Akako's quirk. She'd seen it in action once before, but its mechanics remained a mystery to her. 
Whatever.
She's not interested enough to ask.
Wait.
Miyako just realized.
Akako used his quirk.
In school.
To aid and abet a rule-breaker.
Before she can reprimand him, the door opens again, and Takahashi-sensei walks in, her sharp eyes immediately scanning the room. 
The atmosphere shifts; everyone sits up a little straighter, conversations quieting.
"Class," Takahashi-sensei addresses, fixing her glasses. "Don't you think it's time to start working on your assignment?"
Miyako can only sigh inwardly at Takahashi-sensei's reminder.
She re-routes her focus back on how to navigate this task with these three.
Dear God.
It's going to be a long, long day.
