The TWST cast as things boys from my high school have actually done/said
TW: talk of certain body parts (I’m sure you can guess which ones) if that makes you uncomfortable (it’s the very last one)
[Ruggie]: Eats all of his lunch from his lunchbox in class then gets food from the lunch line and eats all of that just to ask his friends if they have food they don’t want to eat
[Azul]: After asking the teacher how much red bull they drink per day, calculates how many calories that is a day, and then calculates how much the teacher spends on red bull every year and then proceeds to tell the teacher what they could have done with the amount of money spent
[Epel]: Goes up to the teacher to tell the teacher that he won’t be here on a Friday and asks if we’re doing anything important. Teacher says we’re doing a pressure write and he sighs in relief and says “Good. I was worried we were gonna continue doing a class read of the play. I want to be Big Daddy. Can I please be Big Daddy?”
[Floyd]: Finishes all of his class work and with nothing else to do, decides to trace the entire map of Europe. When he finishes tracing the entire map of Europe he then redraws the borders saying “this is what Europe would have looked like if Germany won WW1” and then proceeds to give Germany more territory than just Alscae-Lorraine because “‘French people’ don’t need or deserve that much land”.
[Cater]: Talks to his friends about his favorite road and when asked to explain why, he says “Because it leads to Chipotle”
[Idia]: Played Papa’s Freezeria while the teacher was playing a documentary regarding the Great Recession of 2008
[Kalim]: Has decorated his district-issued laptop with water bottle labels. The front is completely covered. Seriously. I tried so hard not to laugh the first time he pulled out his computer in class
[Silver]: Fell asleep in class and was too tired to notice everyone stacking things on his head
[Riddle]: Corrects the AP calc teacher about a problem he made a mistake on and then proceeds to give the correct answer, explains it, all while saying “It’s actually quite simple—”
[Sebek]: In biology we were learning about the human body, specifically the reproductive system and we had to draw the male and female parts and label it and he proclaims “I don’t care if I get an F I’m not drawing a penis or vagina.” (he does end up drawing both and getting an A on the assignment)

Pleasepleasepleaseplease can you just write a LITTLE of the Stiles in Derek's DMs??? I just need something to keep me going while you slowly rip my heart out with other ideas?
I will pay in love?????
Hey Anon, I'm guessing you're talking about this post?
Just for you, ok? :)
Eggs
Butter
Cheese
Look up the percentage of Australia desert for **funsies**
Stiles typed out the list and hit send before sliding his phone back into his jacket pocket. The barista called his name and he scooped the large tray of coffees from the counter with a slight wave and a fiver in the tip jar. Shelly always made sure to add the extra whipped cream on his caramel macchiato frost and that was not to be forgotten.
The Boston air was crisp this morning as he stumbled out of the little coffee shop and towards Roscoe who was parked on the narrow street. While school was in Cambridge, the best coffee was across the river and everyone in his Computational biology department knew it.
Which was why Stiles was always the errand boy.
He put the departments coffees in the little box on the floor of the passenger seat strapping it in so that they would be safe for his long (not so long), arduous (re: three stop lights and a bridge), journey back to MIT.
A ding came from his phone, Stiles groaning loudly as he gripped the steering wheel and shook it in frustration.
"I swear, if it's Lydia changing her order for the seventh time, I'm throwing her Herbal tea into the harbor."
Ha. Boston Harbor. Tea. Stiles was hilarious.
He took another deep breath and opened his phone to see a small notification.
DH: Did you finish your paper on multidisciplinary approach to estimating wolf population size for long-term conservation?
"Huh. Specific..." Stiles had finished that paper a few weeks ago, but had barely made the deadline. He had been about to text Danny that the new AI prototype he had installed on Stiles' phone was whack when he saw the notification came from Instagram, not from M.A.T.T.
Another ping came through.
DH: And why would you need the percentage of Australian Deserts? That seems like a boring thing to spend your free time on.
Stiles' mouth hung open, eyes wide as he realized what was happening. Someone was replying to his DMs on Derek Hale's Instagram. He held his phone out like it was a bomb between thumb and forefinger; an almost whine escaped his mouth.
It had started when he was in High School almost 10 years ago now. One night he had been on an Adderall-Mountain Dew-Jelly Doughnut-Pizza high and decided that the best way to keep all his random thoughts in one place was to use the app that distracted him DAILY as a note system. He had even made a burner account so that he could keep all his random thoughts together.
Only problem was, his little distracted monkey brain had accidently clicked on Derek Hale's DMs rather than his fake account. It was five weeks in when Stiles noticed and at that point it was too late. It wasn't like Derek was going to answer him anyways, he had said on NUMEROUS occasions that social media was not his favorite thing and he only had the account to promote his new movies (which Stiles watched religiously. I Was a Teenaged Mothman was probably the worst and best movie franchise to ever hit the theaters and Derek Hale as Mothman was his every wet dream.)
So, he just continued to use it. Grocery lists, reminders, random thoughts at night, future movie ideas, school assignment ideas, complaints about his stupid roommate back in freshman year - he wrote it all.
And now someone was responding to TEN YEARS of DMs.
Stiles didn't know what he should do. Should he ask if this was actually Derek? No, wait that was stupid. Derek wouldn't actually be handling his social media. He had people. Peoples? Multiple people who could answer this for him.
"Some. of. us. have. hobbies. that. no. one. understands. And. I. need. it. to. win. a. bet." Stiles spoke each words as he typed it, sending the message out before typing another one. "And. yes. I. got. an. A. minus. because. Harris. hates. wolves."
Stiles tossed his phone onto the passenger seat and started driving to campus, mind still reeling that someone would be responding directly to random DMs that made no sense. If Stiles was asking questions about when the next IWATM movie, sure that would be a conversation the PR team might engage in. Not this.
Lydia owes you $40 for Venmo
Stiles decided to ignore it and his phone remained silent the rest of the day.
.o00o.
Call your Dad
Finish your stupid damn thesis or s u f f e r
Don't forget to get tickets.
It had been a week since the strange response to his DM came through, so Stiles assumed it was a fluke. He had tried a new note handling app that Danny had recommended, but a day later he had already started throwing things back into Derek's DMs. Hey, cut him some slack, it was a 10 year habit.
His phone pinged and Stiles' mouth almost fell open again. Another response.
DH: What are you getting tickets for?
This time, Stiles was quick to respond.
SS: I'm going to try and get tickets to the Bruins game tomorrow. Gotta love hockey, am I right?
There was silence on the other side of the screen, Stiles letting out a frustrated sigh. Whoever Derek Hale's Social Media manager was, they picked the weirdest things to respond to.
DH: So not Mothman in Love premier?
Ah. Now he knew what this was. They were trying to see if fans were biting at the newest spin off. Smart marketing.
SS: I already have my tickets for that. Opening night, middle row, got the collector Popcorn bucket on hold too. I know a guy.
The three dots at the bottom of the screen indicated that the person was typing, Stiles wondering if they were going to ask for a quote or a picture for the page from the opening night.
DH: You have appalling taste in movies.
Stiles' mouth dropped open again, his mind running at a million miles a minute and then crashing into a brick wall with the word appalling painted over it.
SS: Excuse me, the Mothman movies are absolute hot trash and I eat them up like greasy diner food. Do not talk about my comfort trash like that.
SS: but they are pretty bad, so I mean. You're not wrong.
And done, there was NO way the Social Media manager would ever EVER respond to a fan who said something like that. He could go back to his note taking life and luckily Derek Hale would never know.
DH: Then why do you watch them?
SS: Because you're a fantastic and sexy actor and if I could I'd lick chocolate off your abs.
His phone pinged.
DH: You're not bad yourself.
HUH.
Stiles was speechless, his eyes reading over the sentence over and over and over again. He opened his Instagram and quickly flipped through the pictures he had. Most were of him with the Lab boys, Lydia was in a lot of them, some of him on vacation in Peru, some with his Dad. Nothing that would ever, EVER scream you're not bad yourself.
SS: wow, maybe you do need those glasses checked? Unless scrawny Computational Biology Doctoral candidates really crank your wheel.
DH: Computational Biology PHD? Big change from the FBI you were originally thinking about.
Stiles sucked his teeth. That was the problem with this dynamic. Stiles had written everything and anything about himself in these DMs and it could be anyone reading it.
SS: Cyber security would have been my downfall if I did FBI clearly, since you know everything and I know nothing about you. I don't even know if you're Actually Derek Sampson Hale.
There was a blip of the three dots and then nothing. Right, Well that was fun while it lasted. Stiles had been about to turn on his Playstation and forget everything when the ping came through.
Instead of a text, there was a picture. Low v-neck, black rimmed glasses, slightly messy hair, beard that looked like it needed to be trimmed, holding a sign that read your turn @StilesisMe.
Derek. Fucking. Hale.
"Oh my god, oh my god..." Stiles scratched the back of his head furriously, throwing the phone on his bed and just circling it like a vulture circling its next meal. "Derek Hale sent you a picture, Derek Hale is reading your shit."
He stopped walking for a moment. "You just told Derek Hale you'd lick chocolate off his abs."
Stiles threw himself on the bed, slamming his head over the pillow at least a dozen times. Finally he grabbed his phone and sent a quick message.
SS: I don't send photos on Insta. Add me on snap if you want. @S.S.Stilinski69420
He waited.
God he waited.
And then the little Ghost of a notification from Snapchat appeared saying Haleofaguy added you as a friend. Stiles felt his fingers freeze as he hovered over the accept. Why, why was Derek Hale the movie star talking to him? Was he bored? Was he lonely?
Stiles remembered an interview once where Derek said he liked talking with people and learning new things, so maybe it was that? Maybe Stiles was just an interesting guy that Derek wanted to know.
No matter what it was, Stiles' insatiable curiosity got the better of him and he needed to know just how far this rabbit hole would go.
He took a minute to find a filter he liked and snapped a pretty unflattering picture of himself with the caption this is what your in for, buckle up Mothboy
Nothing happened, and then snapchat told him Derek Hale saved the picture to their chat and sent one back. It was the most unflattering angle Stiles had ever seen of the actor and he couldn't help but laugh.
It's Mothman

I recently received a copy of the Cerritos Crew Handbook. This was obviously my favorite page, so here's a high resolution digital scan. (just kidding)
Image ID: A starfleet PADD tablet with a page showing basic facts about Mellanoid Slime Worms in the style of the species bio pages in the Star Trek: Lower Decks: Crew Handbook. It is heavily annotated with commentary from Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Eaurp Guz.
Transcript below cut:
NAME: Mellanoid Slime Worm provisional Federation member. Boimler: I've brought on our Mellanoid officer, Ensign Eaurp Guz, and our resident expert on Mellanoid biology, D'vana Tendi. Guz: full Federation member now, actually.
GREETING: Mellanoid Slime Worms react poorly to friendly insults. At first their righteous indignation might seem like a positive response, but be fair warned! You are not befriending them.
Boimler: Wait, who wrote this? Mariner: Looks like the uh, Zaldan who made first contact with them in the 30s?
TABOOS: Eating in public, uncovered skin. Abducting their children as pets. They do not take kindly to any kind of romantic advances. Guz: ... Tendi: ... Mariner: Girl. IMPORTANT BIOLOGICAL FACTS: Mellanoid Slime Worms are composed of a single amorphous cell which can shapeshift into any number of revolting forms, but which do seem to be willing to take on a bipedal appearance when dealing with aliens. Mellanoid Slimes have no sex, no gender, and reproduce asexually. Not much is known about Mellanoids. Their biology, evolution, and habitat are still a mystery.
Guz, responding to "revolting forms": Wait what? We've always been mostly humanoid! And nonhumanoid forms aren't revolting! They're beautiful! Some of my best friends have nonstandard features. Mariner: no sex? Sick burn. Guz, responding to "no gender": I am a woman. Mellanoids are assigned agender at birth but a growing movement is recognizing that some of us do experience gender. Tendi, responding to the whole section: Mellanoid Slime Worms are comprised mostly of visceral slime with a gelatin skeleton made of skeletal gelatin. Their nervous system is highly redundant and spread throughout the body, with slightly darker regions corresponding to regions of higher nerve density. All sensory cells can feel all senses, so they experience touch, taste, sight, sound, and other senses in their whole bodies, but form sensory organs to concentrate those senses. The biomolecular composition is. Mariner: ok Ada Lovelace, we don't need the footnote to be THAT big. CULTURE: The Mellanoid Slime Worms posses a highly repressed culture, lacking entertainment, interpersonal interactions, and with individuals living in even the richest and most technologically advanced nations on their planet being confined to abject poverty. Their technology is rudimentary, with steam propulsion still in common use on land, and their spaceflight manifests as small capsules incapable of even safely making the journey to the nearest gas giant without assistance. Due to their revolting appearance and archaic technology, they are not worthy of further consideration.
Guz: We don't live in poverty! We just have movie theaters instead of televisions, public kitchens instead of restaurants and dining rooms, libraries instead of personal computers. And Advanced Steam locomotives are cool, ok! They were cheaper to run than diesel engines for many years. Guz: Don't even get me STARTED on the rockets of the time. Oh globs, the things we were able to do with only chemical rockets back in the 30s and 40s! Probe missions to Glerbuh and Rabbit, crewed missions to Omen and Oldsky... and that's before the latest warp drive prototypes. When I was in the astronaut corps, they were working on a warp-2 drive! And that's transwarp-2, so that's like 26% faster than the NX-Beta. Mellanoids pride ourselves in our space exploration, which is why even now we're in the Federation we still have our own space program.
Boimler: Huh. That's it? I thought there'd be more, you know, like, something about the history, maybe native animals, why the taboos are the way they are. But it's just something about steam trains and rocket ships? Guz: No actually I think they pretty much hit the stem bolt on the autoseal. I can't think of a reason a new recruit would need to know more about my species. Besides, Tendi's medical research is pretty thorough. Mariner: Hey I just tried to access the research. Why is it flagged as "Age-Locked"? What kind of "research" are you two doing anyway? Guz: Ohhhh... oh no. Tendi: Ok we can stop talking about this now! Boimler: Eh it's probably fine. I mean, why would a minor using a starfleet database need to know critical biological details about a mellanoid slime worm? What, is some, I dunno, Brikar kid gonna stroll up to Starfleet with a slime worm baby and not know how to take care of it? Mariner: Hah! A big stony alien kid taking care of a gooey lil worm? Like that'll ever happen.

OK SO I FOUND A CONCEPT I MADE UP LIKE AGES AGO FOR A TD HIGHSCHOOL AU BUT LIKE. i made it scottish because that’s the only school system i’m used to,,,
i would spend time in computing class typing away in a google doc (literally titled ‘total drama mental illness’) instead of doing any coding…
so yeah here’s some of my old total drama highschool au stuff (copied from my doc)! (warning: OLD (kinda))
subjects chosen for highschool au (some of these choices were kinda random)
biology - noah, courtney, lindsay, cody, bridgette, heather, tyler, leshawna, dj
chemistry - izzy, cody, noah, duncan, courtney, owen, beth, geoff, trent, katie, sadie, justin
physics - gwen, noah, courtney, harold, cody, eva
french - cody, lindsay, beth, courtney, trent
german - noah, eva, izzy, duncan
mandarin - heather, harold, courtney
spanish - courtney, owen, justin, katie, sadie, tyler, bridgette, geoff, gwen, leshawna, dj
latin - noah, courtney, beth
(ancient) greek - harold
drama - heather, owen, izzy, cody, harold, leshawna, katie, sadie, justin, lindsay
music - leshawna, harold, justin, trent, cody, bridgette, courtney
art - cody, gwen, izzy, bridgette, owen, beth, justin, lindsay
rmps (religious moral philosophical studies) - dj, harold, noah, courtney
mods - noah, courtney
history - harold, trent, eva, leshawna, bridgette, beth, courtney, gwen
computing - noah, harold
technology - cody, owen
pe - tyler, eva, geoff, bridgette, duncan
accounting - trent (forced into it)
business studies - courtney, trent (also forced into it), owen
geography - harold, eva, owen, bridgette, trent, beth, lindsay
noah and courtney’s languages were chosen because they already knew a lot about the language and they kinda wanted to show off.
beth and lindsay chose french because they always wanted to go to paris.
jo is in tyler and eva’s and advanced higher pe class even though she’s a year below and should be doing nat 5s.
cody chose art for gwen. he didn’t end up with her, however, because she took advanced higher and he only took higher. cody cried when he discovered this.
trent’s dad forced him to take accounting.
cody, trent, justin and harold formed the drama brothers when they were assigned to work on a project in music together in s3. they’re all in the same AH class.
all of gen 1 are in the same form class. chris is their form teacher.
noah, ellody, courtney and emma are all key members of the student council.
izzy has accidentally set fire to the entire school twice.
sanders from ridonculous race is the headmistress because i refuse to beleive that sanders and macarthur are the same age as gen characters and because she’s better fit for this than a police job.
blaineley is a drama teacher.
kitty is an s3 in this au, while gen 1 is in s5.
izzy and duncan are the two pupils with the most detentions and suspensions. miraculously, neither of them have ever been expelled.
the lunch tables are separated by form classes.
owen takes business because he thought it would help him in his future endeavours of making a cookie business.
(so i had to take away a few of the things i wrote due to general stupidity of them or i just didn’t agree with those things anymore. i also did a little ‘teacher’s opinions’ thing that i will share if people want it? (but i doubt that). uhhh yeah basically i turn everything into an au. might make a post about orphans au, i dunno)
#there is a lot here!!#thanks to one anon on a takes blog that reminded me this existed#wouldn’t be here without you#ANYWAYS LET’S TAG THIS BITCH#td beth#td noah#td lindsay#td cody#td owen#td harold#td trent#td justin#td katie#td sadie#td bridgette#td geoff#td dj#td jo#td tyler#td leshawna#td eva#td izzy#td heather#td duncan#td gwen#td courtney#LET’S ALL POINT AND LAUGH AT THE CHARACTERS WHO CHOSE ALL THE SCIENCES. NERDS!#(joke)#chris mclean#total drama

In contrast to the Human's sharper turn--or perhaps because of it--Gaster looked vaguely amused. He crossed one leg over the other, observing Giovanni as if he were some interesting new amoeba that he would love to place between slides and peer at through a high-powered microscope.
Could this be his opportunity to throw a metaphorical wrench into this world's Monster-Human relations? While likely as reversible as meticulous organization or an atomized computer, if there was a chance to cause even a little bit of misery for the local iteration of him to have to clean up later, he would take it. Obviously.
Regardless, he had no reason to hide any sordid little details that might have been kept hidden under a rug somewhere.
"That is indeed what I said, albeit I had select few Monsters in mind. The average Monster is oblivious and naive, but there are those for whom violence appeals, be it for its own sake or as a means to an end… And it sounds as if this has not been made common knowledge? I suppose it does make for terrible public relations," the old scientist mused out loud, tutting. "Pray forgive me if you have heard any of what I am about to say before, but I do want to make sure that we are on the same page in this regard.
"The intent of the Royal Guard was to capture Humans so that their SOUL could be extracted, but there were those who managed to elude the Guard and make their way to an audience with the King… Inasmuch as it could be considered an audience. I am sure I need not spell out the fate of those who fell regardless of whomever acquainted them with their untimely demise; there is, after all, only one result to having one's SOUL removed from the body to be contained within a jar made specially for that purpose. On the other hand, the number was a pittance; among those who disappeared upon the mountain, of those who fell into our domain and met their end at Monster hands, a mere six in total - yet it was enough to bloody the hands of the King and his Guard."
He paused, very briefly, and hummed. As he was already delving into his own world's memories, bits and bobs that might not hold true for the world he was in, he figured he might as well continue to do so.
"As well as my own," he added. "I received the first couple of fallen children, those who fell after the Royal's tragedy of an adoptee was killed along with their son, and I received them fresh - in other words, alive. As the Royal Scientist at that time, I was tasked with the extraction of their SOULs, as well as their DT.
"While it was not part of my assignment, I also took it upon myself to sate my curiosity in regards to your species' physiology. The slow decay of your bodies is a fascinating aspect of your organic biology... But I digress. In contrast with my inability to see a problem with such activities, the morale of those who worked under me suffered a great deal until I was forced to refuse further living specimens lest they quit en masse. Not even my closest assistants approved." Nonchalant, devil-may-care; he might as well have been talking about weather systems and erosion.
"I shall continue with my generalizations. Generally speaking, compared to Humans, Monsters are harmless. The majority of them, in fact, innocent. Very, very few knew what truly became of the fallen Humans. However, there is no guaranteed way to discern which ones are not wholly innocent unless you are privy to the inner workings of Monster society. After all, everyone who does not know him views King Asgore as a weak, inept, spineless excuse of a King. I suppose that is still true, but he is a weak, inept and spineless King with the blood of children on his hands, and it is not entirely by proxy."
Giovanni's brow quirked at the assertion.
"That is what they like to say, isn't it?" Giovanni replied, something cold and perhaps a bit haughty in the words, expression growing sharper.
"I find it in poor taste to make such sweeping assumptions about people."
For Christ's sake. Not all Italians were involved with the Mafia. Not all women were soft and helpless. Not all police were dicks. This was like, basic knowledge and respect he was taught when he was fucking five.
Not that he thought that people were any good. He was just waiting for the monsters to show off their dark side.
He leaned forward, one arm laying flat against the desk. He was still smiling, but it wasn't quite friendly anymore.
"After all, did you not say I would be surprised by the depths of the wickedness of monsters?
"Admittedly, I must say it's a rather fascinating scene to watch unfold. Monsters appear, play up the story of innocence, spin this story of being victimized. How convenient that no one truly knows what happened all those years ago.
"I can only wonder what will happen when that perfectly crafted facade of good comes crumbling down.
"How many people have disappeared on that mountain, again?"

How I Got into Coding:
I am a first Gen college student.
I had no idea how college worked.
I could take anything and focus on something and graduate, eventually. Degree plans were for engineering majors or something really specific.
(Genuinely, I had no idea, I would have never graduated if I hadn’t changed my entire life)
In one semester I took these 4 courses:
English II, Arabic I, German I, and Chinese I
That was all.
On top of all of that, I intended on becoming a doctor. Did I have the slightest fucking clue what that all actually meant? Of course not. My family didn’t go to college, or even know any doctors. I only knew my family doctor. But I knew there was amazing work being done by doctors all around the world and I wanted that responsibility.
Until I couldn’t wake up early enough to go to my 8:50 AM class. Until I was hoping to get hit my the campus shuttle so I wouldn’t have to deal with my depression. Until I napped every day and missed hours of my on campus job in a ✨ prestigious ✨ office.
So I did what several other members of my family did: I joined the Navy! And boy my life became an adventure! I dated a married man 4 years older than me! I got pregnant at 22 and subsequently abandoned by this man! While living overseas!
Whew after years of stress and manipulation from him, it felt horrible to be free from him. Now I had to raise a baby and become an adult and live in the world as the Head of Household?
Nevertheless, armed with my GI Bill and my also single mother, I pressed on. I moved back to my original university, solely because I had grades that wouldn’t transfer to other universities nearby and I didn’t want to retake classes.
Until I learned the first thing about premed and I had to retake a handful of classes. I was going strong but I was getting burnt out. I knew I couldn’t keep up this level of academic commitment and continue to ramp it up as I would eventually have to go to medical school. I was taking care of me and my baby. I was financing this time. I couldn’t do it anymore.
So I went back to the drawing board. I got on the university catalog and looked over the list. Anything that would help me support my son and I financially that I was remotely interested was added to another list. I didn’t really see anything.
Growing up though, my grandfather (a Navy man and an electrician) and I loved toying with computers. I ended up being the Family Help Desk Technician. My mom said, “Why not something with computers? You’re so good at them!” I would roll my eyes and say, “Mom, I just Google stuff.” (Ironic, you know)
I eventually settled on Computer Information Systems with a focus on Programming. It seems like a cop out from going from Computer Science but would also give me options, like actual help desk, networking, etc etc. Entry level jobs were all available to me.
Coding was hard. I have ADHD but while I was in the Reserves, I learned I wasn’t allowed to take my medication for it. My 3.6 GPA from my Biology major dropped and sitting in dark basement classrooms surrounded by the hum of desktop PCs was awful. I couldn’t focus. I didn’t turn in a single assignment. I did OK on tests because the professors graded on the curve and gave study guides.
When I tell you I tried to learn, believe me. I was surrounded by kids (I was 6 years older than my cohort) who had taken AP Comp Sci the year prior, made their own apps and websites, or even attended full time coding boot camps at night. I was literally scraping by academically. I graduated with a 3.131 GPA lol which isn’t bad but coming from my pre-med mania, that was a crushing realization: I wasn’t good enough. (This isn’t the truth, but just what I believed at the time)
I took a job at a place that was very hard on me, despite having the reputation of being “fun.” I changed from being a SWE to a Test Automation Engineer. That was March 2020. My manager was rude. Need I say more?
With tears in my eyes, I quit. I thought, “Well I tried, I knew I wasn’t good enough.” I told my mentor, “I just don’t have the engineering mindset.” He disagreed and sadly we parted ways.
I began teaching kids to code part time. It was cool seeing this place grow. It’s like the after school activity for the kids who might not play sports, you know what I mean? Some kids did play sports. More than one. Some were involved in several activities, and I felt bad for them. Their parents had them doing something every night of the week!
But for the tiny computer nerds, they came and they conquered. It was beautiful. I felt inspired by them.
I decided to apply to a developer position and I had a few interviews. The position I currently hold is fantastic. My team is so incredibly helpful, cool, kind, all the things you want when you feel crippled by past failure and impostor syndrome.
They gave me new projects and tools to learn and had loose time frames for completion. They checked in on me. I have paired for hours with my team - and they taught me things in a non assuming way. I began to feel euphoric about work and what I was learning.
Then I saw the job posting. You know, the One. I applied and it all worked out. I have fears about success but they’re realistic and limited. Not limiting, though, they aren’t the same thing. I know I have what it takes to learn and succeed and thrive.
And that’s how I got into coding. Also if you read that, you know me pretty well. Please say hello. Share your story!

18. Claire
She was restless, but she couldn't explain the reason behind it. It was an odd sensation in her guts, called instinct or survival paranoia, but she just kept having that uncomfortable feeling of being followed. The corridors were well lit, and that sort of soothed her fears. As long as there was light, she could breathe a little easier. Maybe it was only her nerves playing a trick on her, but she could swear she had heard something over her head.
The research center was well provided. It was even better than the one they had at Terra Save NA, so finding it in such a state of chaos was a pity. The researchers must have distrusted the security of their online data since they kept physical records, too, in other words, paper. While Chris's men worked on the central computer extracting the data, she paced around the shelves peeking at random folders. She had been so focused on deciphering the coding that the researchers used that she didn't notice Leon arrived by her side.
"Found something interesting?"
"You could say so," she replied as she picked up another folder. What she found inside made her frown.
The familiar lines of letters greeted her cerulean eyes as she read the file.
1 atgccggcag aaaacaagaa agttagattc gaaaatacta cttcagacaa agggaaaatt 61 cctagtaaag ttattaagag ctactacgga accatggaca ttaagaaaat aaatgaagga 121 ttattggaca gcaaaatatt aagtgctttc aacacagtaa tagcattgct tggatctatc 181 gtgatcatag tgatgaatat aatgatcatc caaaattaca caagatcaac agacaatcag 241 gccgtgatca aagatgcgtt gcagggtatc caacagcaga tcaaagggct tgctgacaaa 301 atcggcacag agatagggcc caaagtatca ctgattgaca catccagtac cattactatc 361 ccagctaaca ttgggctgtt aggttcaaag atcagccagt cgactgcaag tataaatgag 421 aatgtgaatg aaaaatgcaa attcacactg cctcccttga aaatccacga atgtaacatt 481 tcttgtccta acccactccc ttttagagag tataggccac agacagaagg ggtgagcaat ...
Claire wasn't a prodigy student, but she was capable enough to recognize what she was reading, and her doubts were confirmed when she saw the notes written under the sequences. Those were genomes and, judging by the coding, viral genomes. She flipped through the folders and realized that no all of the genomes were viral. There were some bacterial genomes and parasite sequences listed, as well.
God...what kind of Frankenstein were they trying to create?
"It seems like they were trying to make a new virus-based on multiple pathogens. These are viral genomes, but these are bacterial genes..."
"Why doesn't it sound new to me?"
"Yeah, I guess you must be sick of hearing it, right?"
Claire spent much of her free time diving through this sort of thing. She could even cite sequences of some viral genes, but to Leon, a senior agent of the secret service, the class of biology would most likely be boring. She kept flipping through the folders until a small mark caught her attention. The researchers had marked some of the genomes with two different colored codes: PJMorpheus and PJLyssa.
She was about to show it to Leon when she heard a sizzling over her head, and her eyes turned immediately to the ceiling.
"Did you...hear that?"
"Hear what…?"Leon replied, and she saw the confusion on his face.
Just great. Not only do I hear voices in my head. Now, I can hear noises, too.
She tried to focus her hearing, to see if she caught on the noise again, but then one of Chris's soldiers said he had finished copying the data. A wave of relief fell over her. However, as soon as it had arrived, the same feeling turned into anxiety. Something about the facility of the mission made Claire uneasy. Where were the monsters?
With the information safely copied into the drive, they were one step closer to leaving that place, and that was good news, but for some reason, the restlessness was still there. It was like a needle that kept pricking Claire's gut as she walked through the corridor. When they turned the last corner, she saw the doors of the elevator, and a sense of relief filled her. Unfortunately, the relief was short-lived.
" STAND BY. STAND BY. SYSTEM MAINFRAME VIOLATED. FACILITY REBOOT IN TWO MINUTES MAINTENANCE PERIOD. "
"What the...?" Hunter snapped.
"Shit...Maybe our hacking triggered the security system."
"Just great, well done, Cement. Now what?"
"Calm down. It is just a system reboot. Probably the generator needs to restart. It's a security mode when it gets overheated. It'll cut the energy for some minutes, not a big deal." Clement said.
The rest of the group seemed relieved that there wouldn't be a self-destruction protocol on its way, but Claire began to panic. There was something horrible about the idea of walking around the place in the darkness, and she wasn't sure why, but she had a bad feeling about it. Claire quickened her pace, trying to match with the team's but then…
SWISH
The redhead stopped in her tracks and looked back. The lights from the corridor were starting to shut down one by one. Like an old horror movie, she saw the darkness was coming closer with each fading bulb. If it had only been darkness, Claire wouldn't have felt so panicked. The problem was, the shadows didn't come alone.
Claire heard a soft whistle in her ear, and she realized that there was something else lurking inside the blackness.
"Run," Claire said out of sudden, startling the group.
They all looked at her quizzically.
"What?" Barry asked.
"Is something wrong, Claire?" Chris asked.
Through the shadows, they come. Demons with a thirst for blood.
Two long claws emerged from the darkness impaling the body of the soldier called Hunter. He'd been the one assigned to watch over the rear and, by default, the one closer to the shadows as it approached. Muller and Bailey began shooting, trying to help their fallen comrade, but the disgusting crunch was enough to make Claire know the man was long gone.
The body fell to the ground in an awkward and humanly impossible position, making a sickening crunch. Panic ensued as the soldiers began shooting in all directions, trying to hit the "invisible" attacker. The thing was, it was not invisible. Claire could see it in the blackness: thin, elongated, pale.
"Don't waste ammo!" Claire cried, recognizing the beast, " The bullets won't harm it. That thing moves in the darkness. If we lose the light, we are dead."
"Ok, what do you suggest?" Chris asked.
"Yeah, run!"
They began running as fast as they could. The wave of chasing darkness was right at the group's heels. Claire managed to catch a better glimpse of the creature that hunted them as it moved closer. Unlike the one Leon and she had seen outside, this one was smaller and, by the looks of it, female. She could see the pale skin that covered the curves of the naked body. It could have been taken by as a regular person if it hadn't been for the abnormally long fingers that ended in black sharpy nails and the twisted faceless head. The lack of facial features seemed to be a common trait in the new strain: none of the specimens they had encountered so far had facial features except a largemouth.
The monster scratched the walls with the tip of her nails, making a creepy screech. She could hear her as she moved closer under the black veil of darkness. Their run was interrupted by another scream; this time, Muller had been the victim; the sound of tearing flesh and cracking bones made her feel sick.
"What the hell is that?" Chris cursed and visibly upset about losing to men in a matter of minutes.
"Is one of the new mutants." Leon said, "These bastards are tough ones, Chris..."
"Was it hiding all this time?" Jill said, reloading her gun.
"No, it's photosensitive! The fluorescent lights must have kept them away, but with the system reboot and the energy out, it took the chance of the lights going off to attack us. We need to stay a secured light if we want to stay out of reach." Claire replied, " or at least stay safe until the energy is back!"
You know the odds are against you.
The annoying voice was back. Claire tried to ignore it, but the voice suddenly seemed to be a lot louder than usual.
They are all going to die here, and it'd be your fault.
Claire kept trying to ignore it. The voice not only annoyed her, but it seemed to make her clumsier. Suddenly, she felt a great pain rip her right shoulder, and she flew against a wall. One of the monster's claws had, painfully, impaled her shoulder, pinning her against the metallic wall. She could see her white blouse start to go black as the blood began to spread through the fabric.
Then she felt an acrid warmth in her face, and she saw the monstrous face in front of hers. The monster did not attack, and instead, it seemed to... sniff her?
"CLAIRE!" she heard many voices shout.
The screams echoed through the corridor, followed by the blast of gunfire.
Claire could not describe the pain she was feeling. It was a mix of a burning sensation and pulsating pain. She couldn't move, and her breathing was becoming difficult.
"You son of a..." she heard Chris shout, followed by a wave of bullets.
But the creature barely reacted to the attack. The creature's "face" had gotten close to hers, and Claire could feel the uneven breathing on her. Maybe it was the fast blood loss or the sudden headache that pierced her skull, but her surroundings were beginning to blur. She could barely make out the screams and shouts her friends and brother were doing.
SYSTEM RESTART IN THREE MINUTES.
The electronic voice echoed. Three minutes? If she could manage to stay alive for three minutes, then maybe she had a chance to make it out.
BIOHAZARD DETECTED. STERILIZATION PROTOCOL INITIATED. FACILITY WILL BE PURGED IN TWO MINUTES. PLEASE EVACUATE THE BUILDING.
Fuck. Claire thought; if they didn't do something, they would all die here. She caught a glimpse of Chris and the remaining team shooting at the monster, the flashes of the fire barely lighting their expressions of frustration and worry.
You know what you should do.
She couldn't let them die here.
Are you brave enough to do it, though?
She heard Leon shout something.
This was supposed to be something you faced alone.
Jill screamed something to Chris, but she didn't understand it.
Two are dead already. How many more will you kill?
One, she thought.
"Chris!" she shouted as loud as the pain let her, "Chris, get the hell out here. Forget about me."
"Don't even think about it. I am not leaving without you, Claire."
"You have to. This place...is gonna blow up. You...need to...get...out with that...data."
"Don't you dare say it, Claire? NO, simply no..." Chris growled stubbornly.
"For god's sake, Chris...I can...distract it long enough for you all to leave. JUST DO THE RIGHT THING. The data is more...important….than my life and you know it. What's one life...in exchange for millions that...could be saved?"
Chris did not reply. Claire knew her brother was painfully aware that her words were the right; she trusted that he'd do the right thing.
Chris...
"I am not leaving you! You can't expect me to just leave, damn it!"
Claire could feel the pain in her brother's voice. She knew abandoning her was hard on him. It'd been hard for her, too, if it had been the other way around. The creature put pressure on her shoulder, and she had to bite her lip to avoid screaming. Her cries of pain would only make it harder for Chris.
"Christopher Redfield!" she screamed with the little energy she was feeling, "GET YOUR ASS OUT OF HERE ...AND IF YOU REALLY WANT TO HONOR YOUR WORD AND MAKE ME PROUD...TAKE THAT...DATA AND DESTROY THE ...BASTARDS WHO...DID THIS!"
Her words finally seemed to reach him. Chris clenched his gun so hard that it almost seemed as if he was trying to bend it. His face showed his hesitation and pain. It broke Claire's heart.
FACILITY WILL BE PURGED IN ONE MINUTE. PLEASE EVACUATE THE BUILDING.
The light of the elevator came through the opening doors, and she saw how the soldiers were fighting to pull Chris in; Jill and Barry grabbed Leon, who, like Chris, did not seem delighted about the idea of sacrificing her. Claire saw them enter the small space in slow motion, she felt sad, but at the same time, she knew she had made the right decision.
She could feel the creature's nails tearing apart the muscles of her shoulder. She would die in here, but not as mutant food. She heard the countdown start like a distant voice; when the counter ran to zero, Claire lost the sense of everything as the fire and heat surrounded her.

Hi this is kinda out of nowhere but I was hoping you’d give me some advice about engineering majors. I’ve considered bioengineering with a uni that has ties to a bioengineering program with a research hospital. However, I’ve heard that they’re more jack of all trades. While engineering program at the uni also acknowledges that students do prelaw or premed. What major would be best for premed? Should I just master in an engineering discipline instead? Do C’s really get degrees? How often are classes curved? Sorry for the question, you don’t have to answer it.
Hi, I'll start off by saying that I'm not a bioengineering major, however I was a biomedical engineering (BME) major for my first semester before switching to electrical engineering (and later i picked up a dual major with computer systems engineering for an ECSE degree). So while I don't know a ton about the different programs, I did go to a few orientation things for BME's, but here's an article explaining the difference between the two.
The jack of all trades reputation could probably be applied to more engineering degrees as well. A lot (if not all lol) of engineering is interdisciplinary and a lot of the majors have concentrations you can specialize in later. For example, I'm ECSE, but that covers a lot of ground. There's control system engineering (for designing controllers), electrical power engineering (for designing power systems), optical engineering (lasers yay), robotics (which has overlap with mechanical engineering), and like endless possibilities. It's definitely hard to pick one because there are so many options, and this is not something exclusive to Bio or Electrical Engineering. My perspective is that most employers expect engineers to be more jack of all trade type of engineers when they start out because depending on the role you will need to eventually specialize in something and they're generally less worried about your technical skills in the beginning.
If you think the program you're looking at will get you good hands on experience and that is what you want, go for it! You can always change majors later (haha yeah me) and if you change your mind after applying, my school at least let me switch (i applied as a biology major). You do need to be careful here - depending on the types of courses you are taking it can be difficult between certain majors (for example, if you decide to go in undecided, some schools have engineering undecided which will make it easier for you to switch into the engineering tracks and make sure you are not behind schedule to graduate in 4 years). If med school or law school is in your plan, I would recommend talking with an advisor at your school, or the other students (not very many people at my school go on to these, but the ones that do and still do engineering are usually BME's for pre-med at least, and I know of a BME that went to law school, but i've also never met a bioengineer major so take this with a grain of salt). If you go to the school orientation day or take a tour, ask your tour guide! They love questions and usually do what they do cuz they love talking about their schools (the people I know that do this loooooveee getting good questions).
Mastering vs med school will depend on what you want to do. I can't tell you what to do here, it's a tough decision, but one that you will have ~3-4 years to make. If your school has program specific advisors I would talk to them (my school assigned us advisors that are just professors wearing an advisor hat and aren't really that helpful, but has some other advisors we can talk to - and though they usually only act as advisors for freshman/sophomores - they are the ones that are more helpful). If you get an internship somewhere, ask the people you work with about their career paths if its a job you're interested in. Ask HR who they usually hire. Go to career fairs as a freshman and steal all the free goodies (i got a pizza cutter once 🍕, I have no shame, I took so much stuff it was amazing and I still use lots of it lol - they even give out useful things like disposable shaving razors at mine) and talk with the people running the stands and ask what kind of grads they hire. You already asked someone on tumblr so you're like 5 steps ahead because you're already thinking about it and getting opinions, unfortunately, my opinion isn't really all that valuable (rip) because i never considered med school as an option once I switched to ECSE. However, I am going to master in EE, and at my last internship, I was told that when recruiters are looking at whether or not you did a grad degree its to check a box and that I should do it in the easiest way possible (however this might not transfer to someone working in the medical field).
C's do get degrees. But it's definitely painful seeing a C if you're used to getting A's in high school. And depending on the job/internship you want, some companies have minimum GPA guidelines for hiring. Space X in particular is pretty ridiculous. If you aren't happy with your GPA, there's no shame in retaking courses as a senior when you have more room in your schedule for a better grade. If you are worried about getting hired I would say the biggest game changer is connections. I got my first internship because of my connections through a high school FIRST robotics team. This internship completely changed how companies look at me, and once you've had an internship with a company, said company is much more likely to rehire/hire you. If you don't have connections, consider joining a professional society or something of the like. Full disclosure though, I have a pretty good GPA so take this advice again with a grain of salt, I probably would have been passed over for my first job considering how new I was if I didn't have the grades to back myself up.
And now for curving. It really depends on the school and the department (and the professor too). In my experiences, classes curve if they have to, and it's pretty much that simple. Someone I talked to last week said they had a 50% average on their last test so the professor just add a flat 20 points to everyone's grade. I have never taken a class where we've been curved down, but I have been curved up a good number of times 😅. It's kind of stressful when the class is curved though, because you don't know where you're going to end up. It's not fun getting 60-70s on tests either even if you know that will still get you an A. For me it makes me feel stupid and like I don't know what I'm doing. Curving is usually more necessary when the professor is newer and the topic is hard. Calculus 1 or Physics 1 would pretty much never be curved at my school. But Computer Science 1 is curved, not because it's new but because the department is evil the coding homeworks are more open ended so it's a bit difficult to predict how each new class of students will perform and some home works will be harder/easier than previous semesters. I would say most of my classes have not been curved a ton, but usually that's because the professors I've had have been teaching the course for a while and know the correct level of difficulty, and in general they've been pretty quick to make adjustments (a test I took recently had a particularly hard question, so the professor let us opt into redoing that question, rather than a traditional curve). Generally as long as the professor gets a Gaussian distribution (a bell curve) around 75-80 or so, they're happy. Mostly I just pay attention to whatever the average grade is, because as long as you're at the average or above you'll be fine, whether they curve or not.
I hope this was helpful and not just useless rambling lmao. If anyone's a bme or bioengineering major feel free to chip in!

I wanna connect the ideas in this post with the ideas in this post because they seem relevant to each other.
to give a basic idea of what's in each one, the first is a post that talks about how homestuck is notable as a creative work that effectively uses the language and format of the internet, in a way that resonates well with people who grew up online. my addition extrapolates to talk about how this quality also made homestuck's style of content creation appealing for others to use, and spawned a lot of creativity from the fans. basically, homestuck is a collage, not just of images, but of methods for delivering information to the audience. it uses a broad variety of experimental techniques, but the purpose of them is to make storytelling accessible. in order to convey an idea, you can use any method you want... whatever suits your purposes. by constantly varying the type of art, writing, and formatting that the story uses, it keeps the story from getting boring for the author and the audience. varying the quality and style of the visual art also implicitly accepts and encourages any kind of artwork, at any level of skill or effort, from fans. and at the same time, the story pioneers new techniques that I legitimately haven't seen used before. at some points it even leverages the design of the web page itself to service the story... it's awesome. this gets people thinking about how to tell stories in non-traditional ways, and further encourages the act of being experimental with your storytelling methods, and having fun exploring your chosen medium.
the second link is mostly just me talking about the merits of homestuck's early acts, and at one point I put a particular focus on the idea of science in homestuck. specifically, I was talking about how homestuck handles science in a way that feels very childlike, which is a positive remark. when you're learning about science in school as a kid, efforts are made to present the material in a way that is fun and interesting... and you're given a lot of tools for exploration within the context of science classes, which a lot of people don't really experience having outside of a school setting, if they aren't going into some branch of science for their career. I was observing that homestuck's aesthetic kind of calls to mind the feel of learning about science as a kid... something about the stark readability of the objects and characters, and the bright color coding of things that are important.
the connection I want to make between these two posts is that homestuck hinges a lot of its interest on the concepts of exploration, and creation. it holistically includes a lot of different themes and ideas, and it does it in such a way where the characters don't have to make it explicit... more often than not, you'll end up thinking of it yourself. homestuck simply introduces elements, and lets you form your own ideas. it puts a lot of stuff out there, and links it all together in this messy web of interconnectivity.
for example, check out this post where I added some commentary about the punch card alchemy system, and how it links the concepts of technology and philosophy. the idea is that captchas determine your humanity... but unlike real captchas, which do this by making you read something that a computer can't read, it instead makes you think in a way that a computer can't think. in order to give you access to items, this crafting system requires philosophical justification for the creation of said items. grist isn't just made up currency that exists to make you work for what you make... the amount of it that it takes to make something is only high if you think that the object you're making should be too powerful or important to be gotten for cheap. you prove your humanity by having a psychology that can assign the object meaning, and thus, value.
or what about the broader themes of biology and mythology in homestuck? there are many mentions of genetics... the goal of the game is to produce a universe via breeding, and there are the origins of each of the kids, or the fact that the chess pieces that fight on Skaia's battlefield are made in test tubes in the labs in the furthest ring... etc. but this theme also exists symbolically in the players of each session. they are people who bring their identity with them into the process of making a new universe. each player is given their own planet, which is responsive to the person it's meant for, and features a personal quest for them. and once the new universe is made, the players will preside over it as deities, and help define its culture with their values, interests, and personalities. in this way, homestuck blends the concepts of biology and mythology. in a biological sense, the kids provide the universe with traits. if they are strong/adaptable/resourceful enough to win their game, they get to pass on their influence to a universe of their own. this is why it is relevant that all the players' chumhandle initials are some combination of A, C, T, and G, which are the letters denoting nucleotide bases in DNA. but this concept also applies to heroes going through trials or completing quests to prove themselves worthy of being known as heroes. SBURB's lore automatically mythologizes the players in the role of legendary heroes to the consorts and carapacians, which pushes them to step up to the task of earning their title, and in doing so, complete the game's objectives... and the game gives them the tools to do it.
really, science, mythology, and religion all wrap into each other here in terms of the way things are named and explained. the punch card system and the frog breeding are both referred to as "alchemy" at various points, which indicates both magical and scientific roots. and the highest title that the players aspire to obtain in the game is "god tier" which implies a sort of religious connection between the players and the game's native characters who know them as legends. the magical abilities that the characters display are ambiguous as to whether they are magical, divine, or something else entirely. a lot of them are defined heavily by a character's personality and identity. the malleability of the different elements that homestuck juggles works entirely in its favor... and all of it is geared towards this sense of growth and creativity.
in homestuck, these things exist on micro and macro levels. the growth of one kid into a slightly different person as they get older, vs. the growth of an entity that will encapsulate the universe. the creation of a piece of music, a drawing, a story, a machine, a person, a plan, a planet... it all just keeps escalating, but it's all rooted in specific characters doing specific things, so we don't get lost in it all. the characters bring it all back around, letting us focus on their smaller actions while the bigger plot remains in motion. and all of this exists at the same time as all the surface level reasons to enjoy homestuck. the comic is funny, and charming, and made to be enjoyable as that. but the fact that the broader elements color the tone of it all, leaves you with the impression that there is a lot of potential in every situation. potential places for the characters to go, or things for them to do, or people for them to talk to, or things for them to make, or even ways to grow and change themselves.
and there's potential for you too. you could throw your ideas at the wall to see what sticks in this exact same way. part of reading homestuck is feeling a sense of recognition and identification with the characters. many of them are based broadly on the kinds of people who make up homestuck's audience. with interests in things like music, art, writing, RPing, programming, playing games, watching movies... they're meant to represent you, in part as parody, but in part as a way to make you feel seen and included in this narrative. as lofty as some of these concepts may seem, the people who engage with them in the text are a bunch of dumb awkward teens. you are at least as accepted as they are, and people love these characters a lot, often in spite of/because of a lot of cringey qualities or major character flaws. homestuck is here to tell you not to be self conscious. play around with your world. make your art. write your story. think your thoughts. be funny and laugh at stuff. don't be afraid of doing it badly.
this is what an accessible creative process looks like.

Title: masterpiece
Square Filled: Soulmates AU
Ship: Robbe IJzermans/Sander Driesen
Trigger Warnings: None applied
Created for @skamevents
So, Soulmate AUs are my absolute favorite trope of any AU ever and I love reading all of them. I love the names on the arms, having the same symbol, I love seeing color only if your soulmate is nearby, but one of my favorites is being connected by their skin. And, with Sander as an artist in canon, I absolutely HAD to use this one. Soulmate AUs absolutely FASCINATE me and so I had to do this one.
Now, because this fic ended up being WAY MORE than what I wanted it to be, it physically will not fit in this text box, so I will be putting the first scene of the fic into this with a read more link at the bottom (note: this is the same scene as my masterpiece snippet that I posted a few days ago). So, I hope you enjoy the rest of this chapter.

Thursday was not Robbe’s day.
Thursday was, by far, Robbe’s longest and physically draining day. While his first class of the day didn’t start until a little before 12:00, his day wouldn’t end until about 23:00 which was when the library closed down. To add to his torture of a long day, thanks to extending his own shift so Amber could be picked up by her mother on her way home from work, his classes on Thursdays were particularly draining, filled with dry teachers that talked to the board and ignored any and all questions.
Letting out a sigh, Robbe turned to his introductory essay which was pulled up in another tab of the computer in front of him. The head of the department didn’t care about them working on homework, as long as their other jobs were done first, and Robbe had already put up the remaining books in the library, straightened up the desks where the student workers sat, and filed away a stack or two of files for one of his superiors.
Now, that all of his librarian work was done, at least until someone returned a book to the circulation counter and he would go off in search of its rightful spot, Robbe could focus on this essay, or a story, that his writing teacher had assigned as an “introduction” to their mindset as writers. And, the topic that had been chosen by his other 25 classmates was soulmates.
He let out a breath of air, burying his face in his hands.
Robbe hated soulmates.
Or, rather, he hated the idea of soulmates.
As a kid, Robbe would sit and watch his mother doodle on her skin with her favorite pen, watch the curve of her letters, her small doodles of flowers, appear on the exact same spot on his father’s hand. His parents would smile at each other, love in their eyes, and tease each other when the other got a stain on their hand because it affected both of them.
To little six-year-old Robbe, soulmates were everything that he had to offer and he thought that he didn’t have one because doodles never appeared on his skin. His mother had giggled at him, informing him that his soulmate’s doodles wouldn’t appear until after he reached puberty. Little Robbe had been confused as to why he had to wait, he now knew that the changing hormones and chemicals in the body at puberty that caused the connection to show fully, but no one, not even people researching and studying soulmates, could pinpoint how soulmates are chosen or when.
To present-day, eighteen-year-old Robbe, soulmates were crap.
His parents had been soulmates, had fallen in love, and got married, having Robbe shortly after. For the first eight years of Robbe’s life, his parents had been happily in love with one another. His father loved being home, loved cuddling his wife on the couch, to the point that Robbe would call them disgusting and throw a pillow at them and they would laugh. Then, his parents started fighting about little things, small minuscule details that shouldn’t matter. As the years went on, the fights got worse, louder and louder until Robbe couldn’t sleep at night anymore, sneaking out of his house and going to his best friend’s house to crash. Then, his father left them alone, found another woman who made him happier, and his mother spiraled, leaving Robbe caught in between, trying to help her.
His parents were soulmates and they had fallen out of love.
If the one person that you were destined to be with was supposed to leave you anyways, what was the point of having the ability to connect with them on a physical level?
Letting out a sigh, Robbe reached out, typing angrily. Soulmates are fucking stupid.
“Woah there,” Zoë teased, walking up with a cup of coffee in her hand.
Zoë was a barista and one of Robbe’s roommates. At the beginning of the year, Robbe had moved into the three-bedroom flatshare with her and a senior, Milan, because Robbe was not going to live with his dad, not after what he did to his mom, not with him and his new girlfriend. It was a minor miracle that the two of them had been so willing and that his father had been so understanding. His father wanted him to live in the dorms, but it was too expensive for Robbe. He was barely surviving month-to-month as it was and living in the dorms would be almost double the cost.
“What’s wrong?” Zoë questioned.
“What isn’t wrong?” Robbe questioned. “Of all the topics my writing class had to pick for our introductory assignment, they picked soulmates.” Zoë scrunched up her nose, understanding. “And, I can’t think of anything to write other than soulmates are fucking stupid.” As if she didn’t believe him, he turned the screen towards her and she stood on her toes to look, letting out a light breath through her nose. He let out a sigh, straightening the computer back. “Think that will get me full points?”
“I doubt it.” Zoë laughed. “Here, it’s from Chloë.”
“Again?” Robbe questioned. Chloë was a barista at the café, who had a crush on Robbe so obvious that even he could see it, which was saying something. When it came to realizing people having feelings for him, he didn’t have the best track record. Despite the fact that Robbe had several relationships, almost all of them had been as a result of the other person making the first move. “How many times have you told her that she’s not my type?”
“Robbe,” Zoë laughed, reaching out to pat his head with a tone that says many times. “I think the only way she’s going to be convinced that you aren’t interested in her is if she finds you making out with a guy. Not that I can blame her. You are a cute boy. Whether you want to admit it or not.” Robbe rolled his eyes before spotting the purple writing on the back of her hand. Zoë caught his gaze and scoffed. “My soulmate’s latest ‘conquest’,” she remarked, pivoting the hand towards Robbe so he could see.
Had a good time tonight was followed by a phone number, only the final digit was smudged.
Robbe knew that he had a soulmate, of course, but his soulmate wasn’t the type of person who slept around a lot, or if they did, they didn’t have girls writing numbers on the back of their hand in hopes of a second round.
On his sixteenth birthday, his best friend, Jens, had jokingly drawn a poor excuse of a birthday cake and sixteen candles on the back of his right hand (and Robbe will never admit to anyone how disappointed he was that it didn’t show up on Jens’ hand). Within an hour, as he sat in his biology class, his soulmate, whoever they were, had drawn an arrow to it and wrote awful, zero stars on booking.com before proceeding to draw a perfectly drawn cake, in pen, with the exact number on the candles, on the back of his left hand. The drawing looked perfect, meticulous, and every year, on that same day, another cake would appear on his hand with an additional candle.
Robbe had a soulmate.
Even if he didn’t want one.
Zoë let out a heavy sigh, pulling him back into the world of the present. “Every morning I wake up with a new number on my hand is another morning I question if you have the right idea,” she admitted, staring at her hand. “Soulmates are crap. I’m always half-tempted to call the number, tell her that he’s just going to find someone else, but what’s the point, right? Plus, it’s missing a digit.”
“Save a woman from getting her hopes up, probably. But, don’t worry,” Robbe remarked. “I’m sure he’ll get his head out of his ass soon.”
“Excuse me,” a voice remarked, over Zoë’s shoulder.
The two of them pivoted to find that a blond-haired man was standing behind them. The man was stunning, absolutely breathtaking as though he had been carved from stone. There was a black-beanie resting lightly on his head, covering the strands of white-blonde hair that poked out from the edge, and he had a pair of bright green eyes that were slightly hidden by the black-framed glasses on his nose. He was dressed in a pair of denim jeans, black converse, and a t-shirt with an artist that he didn’t recognize beneath his black hoodie.
Robbe felt his breath catch in his throat.
Looking like that in a hoodie, glasses, and a beanie was ridiculously unfair.
Especially to Robbe.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt your conversation,” he continued, pushing up his green bag further up his shoulder. “But, I need to check out this book for my art history class.”
“Of course,” Robbe replied, his voice cracking a little. There was a knowing look on Zoë’s face, a familiar eyebrow raised that she generally reserved only for Milan, as she shuffled to the side, taking the coffee with her. The man stepped forward, placing the book on the edge of the counter, and Robbe took the book from him, eager to make sure their hands didn’t touch. “Sorry about that. Do you have your id?”
“Yeah, it’s in here somewhere,” the man replied, digging his wallet out of his bag. He found it, handing it over to Robbe, their fingers brushing ever so slightly, almost like it was on purpose. Robbe felt a jolt shoot up his hand as he took the id in his hands, switching to the electronic check-out system, typing in his student id number and scanning the book. A name popped up. Sander Driesen.
Once Robbe had deactivated the electric security in the spine, he placed his id on top of the cover and slid it across the counter, “Here you go.” Robbe kept his hand on the other side of the book, making sure to pull his own hand away before Sander reached out to grab it. He took the book from the counter, grabbing his id and slipping it into his pocket. “It’ll be due on the 17th of next month.”
Sander sent him a grin, a slightly confident, slightly wicked grin, like he somehow managed to know the effect that he was having on Robbe and his already jumbled mind, almost as much as Zoë did. “Thank you, Robbe,” he remarked. At Robbe’s confused, puzzled look, Sander’s eyes dropped down to his chest and Robbe looked finding his nametag, wanting to slap his forehead. He glanced towards Zoë, who was still hanging off to the side with her chin against her palm, and Robbe thought he saw his eyes flicker down to her hand, recognition in his eyes, but then, Sander was smiling at her and saying to her, all confident and charming, “Sorry about interrupting your conversation.”
“It’s completely okay,” Zoë replied. “I was about to leave anyway.”
Sander moved off, grinning at her, and Zoë handed Robbe his coffee, a knowing glint in her eye as she boosted herself up over the counter to press a kiss against his cheek. He shoved her away, wiping away the residue of her signature red lipstick, and Zoë ran out the door, giggling all the way and promising to save him some leftovers from dinner. Robbe let out a sigh, trying to return to his essay on stupid soulmates, but found his eyes looking for Sander, who had disappeared.

Stop Playing Games (Cesar X Reader)
OMB Masterlist
B/F/N - Best Friend
Playing Games was playing in the background on your speaker on a late Thursday while you closed your math notebook finishing homework tonight.
Not even a moment later, your best friend was calling you on your phone.
"What's up, chica! How are you? Guess what I just found out!" said B/F/N excitedly.
"What?" you asked while you flopped on your bed with your back.
"I heard somebody said Cesar likes you!" said B/F/N squealing on the other side of the phone.
"That's nothing new, B/F/N. You don't think I know that? Also that's old." you said while rolling your eyes.
"So? What are you going to do with the information?"
"Nothing. He doesn't show that he likes me." you said.
"He probably hasn't shown any signs because he's nervous around you."
"Nervous? Are you serious right now? There's a difference between being nervous around somebody you like versus not being interested. I'm 100% positive he's not interested." you said making your statement.
"Well I think he is. Give him a chance, Y/N. Not all guys are the same."
"Well in Freeridge, it kinda is." you said as you thought about all of the boys in Freeridge.
"Y/N, I don't know why it's taking you so long to get somebody. Can you at least go on a date once?
"I'm being cautious. Nothing wrong with being cautious and having high standards. Also stop whining. What are you, three?" you said rolling your eyes again.
"I know. I just want you to be happy." said B/F/N kinda sad.
"I am happy. With you and my family, I'm happy and fine. A boy isn't necessary." you said and you look at your alarm clock on your bed table to see the time.
"Look, if this makes you happy, I'll observe Cesar all day tomorrow and see if he likes me or not, okay?" you said sighing because you didn't want to do this.
"Great! We're doing our point system tomorrow to determine. Goodnight Y/N."
"Fine. Goodnight B/F/N." you said and both of you hung up on each other and went to sleep.
-
The next day, you were talking to B/F/N as she was getting her supplies for the next class.
You turn your head to the left to see Cesar walking down the hall with his guy friend, Ruby.
"Hi Cesar." you said with a smile and Cesar looked at you and said hey. Ruby and him turned a corner to go down another hallway.
"Well, that just gave me the first point of today." you said and B/F/N shut her locker and looked at you crazy.
"Are you serious? That doesn't count! He said hey to you!" said B/F/N with a side-eye.
"Yeah, it does. He didn't say my name or even look at me more than five seconds." you said proving your point of view.
"Man! I was rooting for him!" said B/F/N and she made a pouty face and crossed her arms against her chest upset.
"Awe baby. Don't worry. There's still a whole day ahead of us. So you could still get points." you said kinda sarcastically so B/F/N don't expect it.
The late bell rang and both of you quickly ran to your first class of the day.
You and B/F/N arrived into Biology class late, which everybody looked at you once entering the room.
"Wow. I've never expected you two to be late. What's the excuse?" asked the teacher, Ms. Anna.
"We were talking in the hall." you said and B/F/N nodded in agreement.
"Well, go find your new assigned seats, and we will start our lesson." said Ms. Anna and both of you quickly go around the room to go to your new assigned seats.
You found your name and you looked up to see Cesar, Jamal, and Monse at your table. You saw that you have to sit right next to Cesar and you sat down at the table with your supplies.
"Hey Y/N." said Monse and Jamal syncing with a smile.
"Hey guys." you said. You start writing in your notebook as you look on the board to see the title and objectives of the lesson.
A few minutes later, Ms. Anna was explaining a diagram of the heart and you were trying to pay attention while fighting your urge to sleep right now.
As you drew the diagram and did points right next to the picture, you felt somebody staring deep into your soul.
You turned your head where you felt the tension to see Cesar staring at you.
"Cesar? You okay over there?" you asked with a confused and concerned look on your face.
Cesar kept staring at you for another moment until he shook his head.
"Yeah. Just kinda...dazed off." said Cesar with a little chuckle.
Cesar looked away from you and looked out of the window right beside him. He has his left hand on the back of his neck and starts to rub it back and forth repeatedly.
You shrugged your shoulders and looked back at the board where Ms. Anna started playing a video as another visual to understand.
Not even a minute into it, you felt your phone buzz in your purse. You look up seeing Ms. Anna and she was typing on the other computer.
You get out your phone, lower your light and put it underneath the table so the teacher won't see it. You looked at the notification and saw B/F/N text you.
You look up and see B/F/N giving you a wink from another table. She was sitting with Ruby. You rolled your eyes and read her text.
B/F/N👯♀️❤️: I saw that!
You: Saw what? 🥴
B/F/N👯♀️❤️: You and Cesar! Who else? 💀
You: Oh. That was nothing.
B/F/N👯♀️❤️: That was something! Cesar was looking at you and he looked away nervous! That's a point for me!
You looked at Cesar as he was copying down notes he missed from Jamal without knowing. You looked back down at your phone.
You: Fine 💀 You win this round.
B/F/N👯♀️❤️: Yasss 🎉
You rolled your eyes, shut your phone down and put it back in your purse. You start writing down notes again from the video until the lunch bell rings.
-
You and B/F/N quickly grabbed your lunches and went outside to the lunch tables that were available.
You and B/F/N sat down and started eating while chatting. Cesar and his friends walked out from the cafeteria to the outside lunch tables.
"Guys, let's sit with them." said Cesar with a smile at his friends and they agreed.
The core four walked over to your table and sat around. Cesar sat right next to you.
B/F/N turned to you and mouth the word 'b*tch' once she saw you next to Cesar and you mouthed 'stop'. All six of you start to eat your lunch and have a conversation with each other.
Fifteen minutes later, you were posing as B/F/N and took pictures of you near a wall outside. You felt cute today since it was a Friday.
Cesar turned his head from his friends to you taking photos in front of the school brick wall. Cesar looked down and back up staring at you with a grin.
Cesar got up and walked up right next to B/F/N as they were taking photos of you.
B/F/N turned her head to see Cesar looking at you while you were posing. His grin gained even bigger which caused him to look down with his hands in his pockets of his black jeans as he felt his face becoming hot.
B/F/N turned back to you with a smirk and you gave her a "shut up" look.
"Yo Y/N, can I take a picture with you?" asked Cesar with a shy smile.
"Sure." you said trying to act casual and Cesar walked over and stand right next to you. You and Cesar start taking a few photos together as B/F/N takes them.
"Awe, look at y'all." said B/F/N with a stupid grin on their face while taking a another photo.
"Okay, that's enough." you said as you walked up to B/F/N as she snatched your phone from her.
The bell ring signaling lunch was over and students start to pick up their lunches, throw away their leftovers, and start going to their next class.
You and B/F/N start walking to your next class together until Cesar stops the both of you.
"Y/N, can you not post those photos if you happen to do later? Thanks." said Cesar and left right before you could respond.
"What?" you said and looked at B/F/N and they gave you a confused face.
-
A few hours later, you and B/F/N were getting ready at your house for a throwback party at Ruby's for the ending of a decade as it's soon about to be 2020.
"So, let's get the facts straight. He said hi but didn't look at me for more than five seconds. He also sounded annoyed when he said it. So, a point for me." you said while you were curling your hair in the bathroom with the door open.
"Yes, but I think he was just tired in the morning. Biology class. He was literally staring at you! You didn't feel that?! An obvious point for me." B/F/N said as she was putting on makeup at your makeup counter in your room.
"Fine. I'll give you that. What about lunch? He convinced his friends to sit by us." You said as you turned off the curly iron and walked back to your room to put on your high heels.
"I'm giving that point to you. He asked to take a photo with you! That's a full on point for me! It's so obvious! said B/F/N as she fixes up her hair in front of the mirror.
"Whatever. It all depends tonight at this throwback party. I'm ready to listen to all of my childhood songs." you said with a smile.
You and B/F/N grab your purses with your phones inside and start to walk to Ruby's party.
-
A few minutes later, you and B/F/N arrived at the party. All of the songs from 2010 till now we're playing to remember the decade you and everybody else grew up in.
"I’m going to get us some drinks and then we can party!" said B/F/N excitedly and screamed on top of her lungs as she went through the crowd to go to the kitchen.
You look around you until you see Cesar...with another girl that is known as Olivia.
You just start to stare at them as they are laughing and being flirty with each other. You were just over Cesar and his games.
Right before you could confront Cesar, you hear Ruby saying "Who wants to play seven minutes of heaven?" though the microphone in the living room.
Right before you could quickly run away, B/F/N turns you around and pushes you to the living room with force.
-
"Okay y'all. You know how to play." said Ruby and he put the bottle on the coffee table. You look around the living room to see who was playing.
You groaned as you shut your eyes when you saw Cesar was the first person to spin.
Without looking, you hear the bottle spin for a few moments until it stops. You didn't hear anybody speaking. You opened your eyes and they widened as you saw the bottle was pointing at you.
"Since I don't have a closet, y'all got a guess room down the hall to the right." said Ruby.
Cesar got up from his seat along with you. You followed Cesar into the bedroom and once you entered, Cesar closed the door.
You sat on the edge of the bed and Cesar walked over and sat right next to you.
You were looking down to the floor. Even though you never wanted to play, you never expect to go first.
You looked at Cesar. Cesar turned his head, and you quickly stopped looking at him.
"Y/N?" asked Cesar, staring at you.
"Yeah?" you asked as you turned to look at him. Your heart skipped a beat once you saw Cesar looking deep into his eyes.
"I'm sick of the lies we keep on telling each other." said Cesar, making your eyes widen as you thought of all of the lies you told Cesar.
"What do you mean?" you asked with a confused face.
"We like each other but we're too nervous to even talk to each other." said Cesar and you look away from Cesar.
You look back up at him as you start to stare into his eyes. Cesar's eyes were looking deep into yours, just speaking for themselves.
"Y/N, I'm falling for you. I need to know if you feel the same way." said Cesar and you gained a red blush on your face.
You start to lean in and he closes the gap between. He gives you a slow passionate kiss. You kissed him back a moment later until somebody knocked on the door.
"Yo, times up lovers! It's quiet in there." said B/F/N though the door making Cesar end the kiss.
"I'm falling for you too, Cesar." you said shyly and Cesar gave you the biggest smile he could do and gave you another kiss.
Cesar pulled out his left hand and you grabbed it. You both got up and opened the door to see B/F/N with her phone out.
"Y'all did it! Y/N, how do you feel?!" shouted B/F/N as she zooms in to your face recording.
"We didn't do anything but guess who got a boyfriend now." you said and B/F/N zoomed out in video to take a view of you and Cesar's hands together.
"Finally! I won! Y'all better invite me to y'all wedding." said B/F/N as she took a view of both of us.
"Turn that off. We still got to get you with Ruby." you said with a smirk and B/F/N quickly ran of sight scared making you and Cesar laughed.
You and Cesar did another kiss and walked back to the party as boyfriend and girlfriend.

Career In Bioinformatics: Is It Worth?
What is Bioinformatics?
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field concerned with developing and applying methods from computer science to biological problems. For example, the Human Genome Project, which was completed in 2001, wouldn't have been possible without the contribution of intricate bioinformatic algorithms, which were critical for the assembly of millions of short sequences that are molecular.
Bioinformaticians need a background that is solid computer science but also a good understanding of biology. Since bioinformaticians work closely with biologists, they need to communicate complex topics in a way that is understandable to keep up-to-date with new developments in biology.
Studying Bioinformatics
I took part in a preparatory maths course at university before studying Bioinformatics at Saarland University. It turned out to be a smart decision to take that course for university because I realized that my high-school education was not as comprehensive as necessary to prepare me. For example, only in the preparatory time learned about proofs by induction or set theory.
I understood why the university offered preparatory maths courses: the maths lectures were brutal when I started my studies. There would usually be two lectures, each spanning two hours a week. The approach was the following in terms of teaching. The lecturer would scribble definitions and proofs onto the blackboard, and the students would try to keep up with the dizzying pace. Due to the short lecture speed, I always felt that attending the courses didn't help me learn the material.
In my Bachelor's bioinformatics curriculum, roughly 70% of the program's credit points had to be earned in computer science (e.g. programming, algorithms and data structures, concurrency) and maths courses (e.g. Analysis, algebra, stochastics). In contrast, the remainder of the credits could be obtained from the full life sciences. I felt that the first three terms at university were the hardest because each semester featured a maths and a computer science course that is basic. The semesters that are later a more significant share of Bioinformatics courses as well as more hands-on seminars.
Comparing life-science and computer-science courses, I found the life-science procedures much more straightforward and less effort. While life-science lectures just required attending the classes and passing the exam, computer-science methods involved much more work. There are weekly tutorials where the solutions to the assignments are weekly discussed. Additionally, some classes featured short (15 minutes) tests. In these classes, it was usually necessary to reach 50% of the maximum score in the assignments and tests to take the exam (either only a single exam or a mid-term and end-term exam).
What differentiates the Master's through the Bachelor's system is that it is more research-oriented and allows for much greater specialization. Including, I used my Master's to consider machine methods that can be learning as supervised learning or reinforcement learning. The Master's thesis uses up a much more significant element of the total credit points than the Bachelor's thesis. Therefore abilities such as, for instance, literary works analysis, method development, and scientific writing become even more critical in terms of research.
Job Leads as being a Bioinformatics Graduate
Learning bioinformatics, I happened to be often expected where you could act as a bioinformatician. About 80% of bioinformatics place have been in research or the public sector. The issue with research jobs is that they're usually fixed-term (age. g. two years) because these positions in many cases are financed task that is using. Into the public sector, bioinformaticians are often desired in the medical industry (e.g. in hospitals) plus in health-related federal government institutions. The benefit of roles in the public sector is the fact that they've been usually permanent. Nonetheless, employment in an organization that is the general public as being a hospital often involves method administration duties such as, for instance, starting computers and databases - tasks that have little to accomplish with bioinformatics itself. Furthermore, both research and public-sector positions provide fair salaries being low to industry.
In my estimation, no more than 20% of bioinformatics jobs come in the industry. How come the percentage therefore low? The main reason is the only industry sector that employs bioinformaticians is big pharma, within my view. Right here, bioinformaticians are expected to perform tasks such instance:
• Modeling: Estimation of protein structures and simulation of molecular interactions
• Data processing: processing and evaluating sequencing information, for example, from next-generation sequencing or sequencing that is single-cell
• Virtual screening: breakthrough of leads (prospective brand new medications) using computational practices
• Data technology: Analysis and interpretation of data
Since bioinformatics is very research-oriented and industry jobs are few, many graduates (maybe 40%) join PhD programs. The people industry joining work in non-bioinformatics roles is an example, since it consultants, software designers, solutions architects, or information scientists.
Some individuals advise against studying bioinformatics because it is difficult to find an operating task afterwards. I didn't have that experience at all, and I received a job that is numerous from recruiters. I might argue that having a bioinformatics degree, job prospects are acceptable due to the fact bioinformaticians have a particular skill, helping to make them appealing for organizations:
• Bioinformatics graduates exhibit the traits of T-shaped experts. This permits them to execute many different tasks and to behave as facilitators in interdisciplinary teams.
• Bioinformatics graduates often have more experience that is useful software than computer-science graduates.
• Bioinformatics graduates are keen learners. Their proficiency in numerous disciplines shows that they can effortlessly conform to situations being brand new.
Advice to Prospective Bioinformatics Pupils and Graduates
Whether I would study bioinformatics again, I might be torn backwards and forwards if you asked me. Regarding the one hand, I must say I liked the variety of the bioinformatics system, and, with a degree in bioinformatics, many jobs are possible. The economic truth is there are few bioinformatics roles, so when you take a non-bioinformatics work, all your specialized knowledge decreases the drain having said that. Hence, I could also imagine studying a less subject specialized as computer or data science.
If you are thinking about studying bioinformatics, here are a few bits of advice:
• Do not study Bioinformatics if you hate maths. Especially the semesters that are first maths-intensive.
• Do no study Bioinformatics that it is very similar to studying biology if you were to think. Keep in mind that bioinformatics is more associated with computer technology than biology. You will find excessively biologists, which can be a few results in the change to bioinformatics.
• if you aim to operate as a bioinformatician in industry, plan. Remember to take courses that are industry-relevant forge industry connections, for example, through internships.
• Be flexible in your career ambitions. After graduating, you could not act as a bioinformatician. Nonetheless, you won't have problems locating a place when you have good programming and information analysis abilities.
Bioinformatics Versus Data Science
• possibly the most useful definition of "bioinformatics" is processing and analyzing large-scale genomics and other biological datasets to develop biological insights. As a result, other terms are often used, such as "computational genomics" and data that are "genomic."
• Data science is a little broader, mostly a more general term whose meaning is similar to bioinformatics minus the focus of biological processing and evaluating large-scale datasets to produce insights.
• in an article in Towards Data Science by Altuna Akalin, who cites audacity.
An information scientist's primary abilities include programming, machine learning, data, data wrangling, data visualization and communication, and data intuition, which probably means troubleshooting data concerns that are analysis-related.
• What comes up in bioinformatics is domain-specific information processing and quality checking, fundamental information transformation and filtering, statistics and device learning, domain-specific analytical tools and information visualization and integration, capacity to write code (programming), the power to communicate insights which can be data-driven.
• the difference that is key in Akalin's definitions is "certain domain data." The domain is genomic, proteomic, hereditary, and healthcare-related information in life sciences. It does not necessarily add sales and data, which are economical. Another method of putting it's that a bioinformatics professional is probable an information scientist; however, a data scientist is not necessarily a bioinformatician.
Bioinformatics Facts & Figures
• Persistence Market Research recently published a report, "Global Market Study on Bioinformatics – Asia to Witness Fastest Growth by 2020," which valued the worldwide bioinformatics market at $4.110 billion in 2014 but likely to grow at an annual mixture growth (CAGR) of 20.4 % from 2014 to 2020, hitting 12.542 billion in 2020.
• The Future of Jobs Survey 2018 by the World Economic Forum estimates that 85 per cent of surveyed businesses tend or very likely to consider data analytics being big. It also indicated that the revolution that is "industrial create 133 million brand new job functions and that 75 million jobs are disappearing by 2020."
• And yes, you guessed it, many of the jobs which are now in the regions of information technology and bioinformatics. In reality, the #1 top ten job champion ended up being "data analysts and scientists" followed closely by "artificial intelligence and machine learning specialists." The number 4 spot was data that are "big," followed by "digital transformation experts" (#5), "software and applications developers and analysts" (#9) and "information technology services." (#10).
• together with job outlook for bioinformatics for 2018 to 2026? The Bioinformatics Home weblog writes, "The easy reply to this real question is that the overall outlook is excellent, the demand outweighs the supply. However, the devil is within the details as usual. Nevertheless, it's good to become a bioinformatics scientist."
Job Titles and Search Terms
• Although "bioinformatician" could be a certain job, and there are various keywords that are frequently related, including bioinformatics.
Bioengineering, computational science, pc software engineering, device learning, math, data, molecular biology, biochemistry, computer technology, biostatistics, biomedical engineering, engineering, biology, information systems, genomics, computational biology, information science, and epidemiology.
• a search that is single BioSpace developed over 100 jobs mainly using "bioinformatics." The idea being: biostatisticians in the space that is biopharma to have a good comprehension of both data science and particular aspects of the life span sciences.
• Akalin had written, you're kept with most of the information science skillset plus some more "If you eliminate the particular domain needs from the bioinformatics set of skills. Individuals who result in the switch from bioinformatics to information technology will most need that is likely to adjust to the company's information organization and circulation environment. The issues are from a different domain, so they will have to adjust to that also. But the same would be true, at the least to some degree, for the data researchers jobs that are switching various employers."
• Akalin also points out that much of the difference is regarding mindset, particularly in academia to industry. Several information researchers who switched to bioinformatics or vice versa said that the sector is more product-oriented and customer and that the models needed on the market require more maintenance. "Besides," Akalin writes, discussing Markus Schuler, "he shares the idea itself is as important in product-oriented thinking that you don't constantly select the coolest and the most useful models; other factors like operating time, execution demands, scalability and architecture fit and also interpretability for the model. However, in terms of skills, he adds that bioinformatics and data technology is very comparable if not identical."
Job Growth and Median Wages
• The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't execute a task that is great of down specializations like data science and bioinformatics, tending to lump everything under Mathematicians and Statisticians. The BLS claims the task outlook from 2016 to 2026 is 33 per cent, much faster than average, and that the median pay in 2017 ended up being $84,760 with a Master's Degree for that category. Statisticians were cited among the fastest-growing occupations, at 34 per cent, and epidemiologists have an improvement rate of 9 per cent and pay that is median of Master's Degree prospect of $69,660.
• In 2018, O*NET OnLine, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, projected task development for bioinformatics researchers within the U.S. to be 5 to 9 % and as high as 12 % in California. They launched that from 2016 to 2026, there is 3,700 new job, and that total employment in 2016 had been 39,000 staffers. Based on the study, the same median wages in 2017 were $76,690 yearly for bioinformatics boffins and $47,700 for specialists.
While the Bioinformatics Home blog correctly notes, "In any case, median salaries give just a proven fact that is vague of because the wages differ enormously between quantities of employment."

AU-gust 22 - Futuristic AU
For this. On AO3.
Captain’s Log - Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.42
We got in a bit of a scrape with some unfriendly locals on the planet and found ourselves unable to evacuate due to an ion storm. Which apparently Cmdr. Walker was unable to detect in advance, despite the size of the storm. This marks the fourth time in three months that Cmdr. Walker has failed to note a relevant scientific fact, despite his role as Chief Science Officer.
During our time on the planet, Dr. Winchester was able to...

Captain’s Log - Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.135
Following recommendations from myself, Dr. Winchester, and First Officer Harvelle, Chief Science Officer Walker has chosen to resign his post and retire, effective as soon as a reasonable replacement can be located. He will be leaving Starfleet with full honors.

Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.167
It has been two days, four hours since we picked up our new Science Officer, and I hate him already. Sammy said not to judge him so quickly, since we’re going to be stuck with him for the remainder of our five year mission, if not longer, but he said it with that pinched look that means he really does hate him as much as I do.
I’ve never worked with an Angel before. I knew they were aloof and cold, but the sheer lack of empathy. God. He’s an unfeeling bastard and it makes me wish I could punch him in the face and keep my command. Even if it would hurt me more than it hurt him.
...Okay, I just listened to that again, and I think I need to push for one of those mandatory ship-wide tolerance seminars again.

Captain’s Log - Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.181
...four members of the landing party affected by an unknown poison, including myself. Though I was unconscious for most of the remainder of the mission, I was later filled in by Dr. Winchester and Cmdr. Harvelle.
Though the away party remained under threat from the native Tulian people, Dr. Winchester and Chief Science Officer Castiel were able to fabricate an antidote to the poison using the readings they acquired from their tricorders and the limited supplies they both keep on hand, as the transporter remained inoperative during this time. I have since been assured by Cmdr. Novak that the transporter malfunction was an anomaly that will not be repeated.
I am recommending commendations for Cmdr. Castiel and Lt. Cmdr. Winchester for exemplary service under pressure.

Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.205
...how much is actual incomprehension and how much is willful misinterpretation. I swear, we had just talked about the structure of Human jokes and I know he knows more about prime numbers than I do. I think at this point he just gets a kick out of it. I mean, every time he pulls off one of his straight-faced Humans-are-so-strange routines, his eyes just freaking glimmer and he smiles a bit, just on one side.
Everyone on this ship must be blind if they can’t see how much he enjoys messing with us.

Captain’s Log - Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.272
Our newest mission from Starfleet has required us to stop off at Houston IX to pick up an ambassador, whom we will then shuttle to Carthage.
We did not experience any difficulties picking up the ambassador. Once he was on board, however, it became clear that we had a problem.
Ambassador Crowley is a Demon, from the planet Demos in the Etheril system. Cmdr. Castiel is an Angel, from the planet Angelii in the Etheril system.
These two planets have been at war with each other for-fucking-ever, and I can’t believe Starfleet just royally screwed this one up, SO badly--

Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.272
...that douchebag Crowley has the gall to stand all smug in the transporter room and say that he’s terribly sorry for the confusion and he deeply hopes that the inconvenience won’t be an issue. The dick.
Castiel, on the other hand, was what I’m pretty sure passes as spitting mad on Angelii. I’m not sure how I ever believed he didn’t have any emotions because oh boy were they written all over his face. I’m frankly very surprised he didn’t smite Crowley where he stands for the audacity to come aboard his starship.
This officially puts paid to any belief I had in those rumors about Angels being able to melt eyeballs or kill people with a touch, because if he had those powers, I’m pretty sure Castiel would have used them, rank or no.
Then, as soon as I became aware of this little snafu, I had to go ring up the Admiralty and try to figure out what the fuck was going on. Because the blood feud between the Demons and the Angels was basic knowledge and the first bullet point in the personnel files for everyone from either planet.
There aren’t that many Angels in Starfleet, and even fewer Demons, so I’m not buying Zachariah’s butter-wouldn’t-melt routine. The Free Will is the only ship in the quadrant with any crew member from the Etheril system, so there’s no way we were picked at random to ferry Crowley around.
Someone’s got it out for Castiel, and I won’t stand for...

...injuries acquired while protecting a senior officer from harm. Dr. Winchester has assured me that Cmdr. Castiel will make a full recovery. The arrow that was meant for me hit him in the chest, which would be lethal for a Human, but Angelic biology differs in both the placement of internal organs and their capacity for rapid healing. I have been informed that Cmdr. Castiel can be expected back at his post within the week.
I am recommending commendations for Cmdr. Castiel for bravery under fire and dedication to the lives of crewmembers. I am also recommending commendations to Lt. Mills...

Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2254.346
...turns out that Cas hasn’t seen any of the new holos with Ford Harrison. Or any of the older ones. Actually, scratch that.
It turns out that Cas hasn’t seen any holos. Not even older two-dimensional films. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
And that’s a crying shame. I have a large media collection, and I am not afraid to use it. We’ve started weekly movie nights. I’m also trying to introduce him to Earth snacks while I’m at it. Popcorn hasn’t gone over well, but he’s surprisingly into Thin Mints.
After we watch through my entire Ford Harrison collection, I might break out the older classics. Nothing quite like shiny, low-budget, low-tech, computer-animated explosions to lighten the mood.

Captain’s Log - Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2255.11
...seems like the rumors of extrasensory perception have not been exaggerated. Though we were unable to detect any signal on the frequency he described, Cmdr. Castiel has made it clear that he has been summoned back to his home planet for some urgent business.
While the Free Will is technically on a mission to deliver supplies to Lunar Base Kappa, it is not an urgent assignment, so we have time to detour to the Etheril system. If we had not been able to, however, Cmdr. Castiel made it clear that he would be returning to his home planet, with or without the ship.
--
Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2255.25
...won’t even talk to me anymore outside of shift! He’s cancelled the last two movie nights, and I swear he’s been avoiding me at mealtimes.
I don’t think I even realized how much time we’d spent together until we stopped.
I’m not sure what those bastards on Angelii did to him, but I swear to god...
--
Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2255.47
I’m not sure what finally did it, but he’s talking to me again.
Sammy’s been giving me worried looks for a month, and I’m pretty sure he was working himself up to one of those “you know I care about you, and you’re my brother, but I have to look after the whole ship, and you’re being a dick right now” speeches. Because I totally was. Snappish and frustrated and irritated. ...all because Cas wasn’t returning my calls.
Metaphorically. My metaphorical calls. Because I wasn’t calling him. Obviously.
Anyway.
He’s talking to me again. If I had to put a guess on it, I’d say it probably had something to do with the discussion we had on the Angelii government and social hierarchy. Well, “discussion.”
I might have ranted and yelled at him, but I was concerned, and he didn’t look phased, so I’m not going to worry about crossing any hypothetical boundaries here.
And I’m not sure what it was. But the next morning he met me for breakfast in the mess before shift as if we’d never stopped hanging out. I’m not sure where I went wrong, but I might know how to fix it if it happens again.
--
Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2255.93
Someone’s going to die.
I haven’t quite figured out who yet, but they’ve got Zachariah in their pocket, and they’re the ones who called Cas back home, and they’ve got nothing good planned.
I’m not sure what they wanted with Cas, but I deprogrammed him again and I’m keeping him, come hell or high water, so I’d like to see them try and take him again. I’ll be waiting for them.
...Shit. Does this count as a premeditated confession in a court of law? Probably best to be on the safe side then. Just in case. Computer, delete--

Captain’s Log - Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2255.127
...little evidence of large-scale corruption, it is nevertheless apparent that the Daughters of Lucifer were not a small or poorly funded organization.
Their activities - including the targeting of my Chief Science Officer - have been shut down, but I am recommending extensive monitoring of the entire Etheril system, as well as planets with large Angel or Demon populations. Both Abaddon and Ruby have evaded capture and it is not clear what their next moves are.
I am recommending a commendation for creative strategy under pressure for Cmdr. Castiel and commendations for bravery under fire for Cmdr. Harvelle, Cmdr. Castiel, Cmdr. Novak, Lt. Cmdr. Winchester, Lt....

Captain’s Log - Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2255.135
We are hoping for a quiet mission on Altair VII. Cmdr. Novak believes he has devised a way to operate the transporters through an ion storm. Cmdr. Castiel has identified one beginning to brew here in the upper atmosphere, so we’re going to try testing that theory.
Lt. Cmdr. Mills will be leading the away team with Ensigns Jones, Novak, Spengler, and Zeddmore. The primary aim of this mission is to test Cmdr. Novak’s hypothesis by attempting to transport blocks of matter to and from the surface of the planet. The secondary aim of the mission is to take tricorder readings of the air, soil, and native flora.
Cmdr. Castiel will take the conn during this mission, as it falls entirely within the purview of the Science Division. This will also serve as a test of Cmdr. Castiel’s aptitude for command, as Cmdr. Harvelle has indicated that she will be seeking a promotion to captain when we next return to Earth later this year, leaving the First Officer’s position vacant.

Personal Log - Capt. Dean Winchester of the USS Free Will Stardate 2255.165
Sammy’s been giving me weird little half-glances all day, but it wasn’t until I got back to my room ten minutes ago that I figured out why.
It’s been a year since Cas came on board.
Just for kicks and giggles, I went back to listen to the first couple logs I made after he joined the crew. Man, was I wrong back then.
Cas isn’t cold or aloof or emotionless; I just didn’t know how to read him yet. I’m not sure if that’s a Cas thing or more of an Angel thing, but it definitely makes me happy that he’s on board. He’s my best friend, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Between Crowley and Lucifer and all of the day-in, day-out missions we’ve had while boldly going, it’s been a rough year, but never let it be said that the Free Will is boring.
I think I can hear Cas in the hallway, so I’ll cut it short. It’s movie night.
Winchester out.

My Online School/ Confinement Routine in France
Already a week into Confinement, and not really knowing how long it’s going to last, i tried to jump into a routine right away. So here’s a little post breaking it down.
Mondays and Tuesdays are my busiest work days, having about 5 classes to work on, so roughly 5 to six hours of work to do. My first class doesn’t give us our assignment until 9h.
Monday/Tuesday / Thursday/ Friday morning routine
7h30- wake up and do a little stretching before i head on downstairs for breakfast.
7h45- 8h10 - breakfast. Every day with out fail I have natural yogurt with oats, two pieces of toast and a cup of black coffee.
8h15- open my computer for the first time in the morning, i check what classes I have and if any of my teachers have already given us an assignment for today yet, then I make my to- do list for the morning and grab my stuff to shower
8h20-8h40- shower/brush my teeth/ get dressed, all that jazz
8h45- make my bed, gather what supplies I’ll need for the morning, put on moisturizer and makeup if i’m feeling it
Then I settle down to do some work.
My monday mornings are usually spent doing French. I have about three hours of french work to do on mondays so I like to get it all done in the morning. I usually take a break about every hour for ten ish minutes
My family eats lunch together between 12h30 and 13h30, whenever everyone is done with their morning work
Monday afternoons are spent doing any math, civics, economics, or spanish work I have.
Tuesday mornings are either history work, or finishing up anything i might have not finished monday. Often times its history because our prof decided during online school we’re going to try to get ahead of the curriculem aka so. much. work. I often spend all morning on history
Tuesday afternoons are for math and biology.
Wednesday I start working at 8h instead of 9h but I only have three classes to work on so my day looks a bit different
I wake up at 7h30, eat breakfast then get right to work; Wedneday mornings are math, history, and spanish. I usually finish in the morning, shower and get dressed after I’m done working and then spend the afternoon working out, playing wii with my sisters, practicing french with my mom, or watching TV
Thursday Mornings I’m back at starting at nine so after my lil morning routine I do spanish, and history
My only class Thursday Afternoons is math so i take a “long lunch” and work out or something until I do my math work at about 15h
Fridays I only have french and economics, so I do my French in the morning and economics in the afternoon, and then do whatever with the rest of my day
Evenings I usually finish my work in the afternoons around 15h-16h so I usually chill in my room writing or reading or something until my sisters finish with their work. Then we either play wii or a game or I practice French with my mom until 20h when we watch the news and then eat dinner. I always call it a day after dinner because we finish sometime between 21h-21h30 and I try to get to sleep by 22h30 at the LATEST
Weekends I really don’t have a routine haha
so yea that’s my current routine, don’t know how long it will last because we don’t really know how long the confinement will last but I hear they’re thinking about a month to six weeks sooooo
also I wanted to say, the french school system is insane, and all this work is a lot. I do take breaks about every hour especially mondays and tuesdays, and take advantage of the free time I have later in the week. If you are also working or studying at home right now, please remember to take breaks and take care of yourself to avoid burnout :))
