The room would be silent if it wasnât for the hum of the aircon and the whirring coming from Vernonâs open skull. The organized mess of wiring, components you donât even know the names of, the small LED diodes blinking at you like stars in the night sky. It makes you feel like youâre looking at something humans werenât supposed to see.
The days are getting longer and hotter. Stifling. You literally stand right where the air blows at you from the aircon and still you feel like you canât breathe. Thereâs no escaping the heat and the vaguely dreamy, floaty feeling you get in the later hours of the day. The nights provide no relief either and youâre stuck with your thoughts because you canât sleep. Even the android sleeps better than you lately.
âSo, uh,â Vernon hesitates, which is unlike him. You feel like youâre going to be sick. âItâs between my oh moment and when we first held hands this time.â
You breathe in slowly, a deep breath that inflates your lungs until it hurts. In a way, you are lucky. The choices only started getting heartbreaking recently. You exhale slowly.
âI,â he sighs, âWhat do you think?â
âItâs your memories, love,â you shake your head and sit down behind him, wrapping your arms around his body. Warm. The way metal warms up on a hot day, not the comfort of organic bodies or warm water. His shoulder is hard under your chin. The newer models are softer. More human-like. Perhaps they could simulate the comforting feeling.
Not that thatâs the selling point. They come with bigger memory storage. And, you suppose, better software as far as memory organization is concerned. Not this âpick between these two random optionsâ Sophiaâs choice torture of memory erasure that he has to go through on a separate, ancient computer that he has to plug into and that accepts his memory card.Â
The mechanical parts inside of his skull buzz right next to your ear. It always gets a little louder when heâs thinking.
âWe will hold hands again,â he says slowly, âBut I can only fall in love with you for the first time once.â
âI mean itâd be the first time again if you deleted it,â you try to joke but it just sounds dry and forced. He doesnât say it, and maybe itâs only because he doesnât consider it an option, but thereâs the chance he wouldnât fall in love with you again. Maybe youâre just making this worse for yourself.
The whirring quietens. People used to say androids are hard to decipher. They mustâve never been close to one.
âIt wouldnât be the same,â he leans his head against yours cautiously, minding the sharp edges of the plates of his open skull, âAnd itâd be more noticeable.â
You try to swallow but your throat is too dry and too tight. It feels like thereâs no oxygen in the room. Usually youâd blush and giggle at the insinuation that he thinks about the moment he fell in love with you often. Today you canât. It doesnât even register.
Anyway, heâs right. Holding hands isnât that big of a deal. You have no idea why youâre both being so dramatic. Maybe itâs because this is the first time heâs forced to lose some memory of you. Before they could be saved in exchange for some of his random trivia knowledge. Itâs barely there now and itâs heartbreaking.
It also feels wrong. Like heâs losing himself to keep you. It makes you sick. He wonât listen, stubborn as he is. You do wonder, though, if the only reason heâs still by your side after so long is because he cut his world too narrowly around you.
âYeah, go ahead,â you nod. And just like that, in a couple of seconds, itâs done. The world is still turning. The time doesnât stop for even a second. You remember the shy, careful way his hand slipped into yours. Your fingers intertwined and you wondered about how cool his synthetic skin felt against yours. It was fall and the coolness was not very welcomed. Â
You still remember - he doesnât.
Does he still remember that he used to be against this? Despite it being completely natural. He used to say you deserved better. You keep telling him the same.Â
He hands you the compartment heâs holding and you carefully slide it back into its place inside his metal cranium. The structure closes automatically and he looks human again. Almost. The whirring gets louder, quicker. You donât have time to pay it much mind while you help Vernon get on the couch and lie down.Â
The memory isnât the only issue heâs dealing with recently.Â
The thing about the older models is that thereâs very little that can be done for them. Screw the system made to force people to upgrade, to keep buying. Refuse to make the older and newer models compatible in any way and boom, you can make way more money than you could ever need.Â
There are rumors of people who could help your situation but honestly, who even can afford their services. No matter how much youâd be willing to sacrifice just to help your lover live. And to remember. Itâs paralyzing to know that no matter what you do, it wonât even come close to being enough.
The list of the memories lost keeps growing. Itâs gonna keep growing, inevitably. Most of them have been insignificant so far, fortunately. Itâs not gonna be that way forever. Today was the wake up call.
With Vernon asleep, you can only blankly stare into space. Thereâs nothing you can do. Nothing to help him. Nothing at all to save him.
It feels selfish to worry about it, to cry about it, to despair about it. Itâs not your mind to begin with. Sharing the burden doesnât help. You know itâs slowly getting to Vernon too. You donât need to literally hear his mind race to notice whenever he realizes thereâs a blank space where something should be.Â
Itâs a cursed circle, forgetting, learning again, only to be forced to forget not long after. Thereâs no help. Itâs hopeless. No matter where you search, who you ask. Itâs always so far out of reach that youâre not sure whether itâs a good thing or not that at least thereâs no hope.
And the issues keep stacking. Not only the memory. Not only the energy draining out of him faster. Vernon hides it from you, but you know. You notice. When you lie together, hold each other under the blanket he doesnât need, heâll admit heâs scared. He can feel himself fading away. He never goes into specifics, living with him as long as you do he doesnât need to anyway.Â
The light at the end of the tunnel, the light thatâs supposed to be hope, feels more like a train speeding towards you. The clock is ticking and you feel it in your bones. Tick-tock. Your days are numbered. Timeâs running out. No matter how much you dig your heels in, youâll be dragged forward whether you want it or not.
Itâs just one blow after another.
The notification of a software update thatâs supposed to erase some of the issues with the functionality of androids of Vernonâs type.
You dread the size of it.Â
Itâs already noon and heâs still asleep. Yesterday he decided to sacrifice the couple months you spent at your first shared home in hopes itâd solve things for some time.
You wonder if thatâs gonna be enough.
You wonder if one day itâll be better if he forgets you completely.
Probably. But then again so much of your lives is intertwined that it might just cause more confusion and chaos. Itâs not like you could abandon him, youâd still want to take care of him, protect him, make sure he can live as happily as possible for as long as his luck holds.
You brush away some of the synthetic hair from his face. It all takes so much from him. The demands are getting higher, his system and body canât keep up. Every little change requires so much power to pull off. The software update will be the worst in a while, especially because of the deterioration. Vernon guesses it might take weeks for him to gain consciousness again.Â
Itâs just not fair that he looks so much like a human. You suppose the slow and inevitable decline towards death is human too, and just like for humans, it canât be changed, itâs not always fair. You know. But it hurts.
You wipe away the tears that spilled thinking about the future that might not be as distant as you thought.
Vernon doesnât know what to do. If it was up to him, he likely wouldnât do anything. No erasing memories, no updates. Heâd accept the hand he was dealt and focus on experiencing as much as the limit of his body would allow him. Eventually, something would happen and heâd either shut down or break beyond repair and - hopefully - conscience.Â
Itâs not really only up to him, though, and thatâs the issue. He doesnât doubt that you'd support his decision even if it meant less time left with him, but he doesnât want to hurt you like that. Whatever happens, youâll get left behind. So he wants to help you have less regrets. He can see youâre not ready to let go and maybe you never will be. It makes him grateful and sad at the same time.
The day of the update is getting closer. So heâs revisiting all his options again and getting too sentimental for his own good. Heâs just tired of all this. Tired of forgetting. Tired of losing himself. Thatâs what it feels like heâs been doing all along - just chipping away at himself? And for what? Survival instinct thatâs so laughably pointless for synthetic life?
Honestly, he doesnât want to go through with it. There exists a point where self-preservation makes no sense and heâs just about reached it.
Whatâs it gonna fix anyway? His days are numbered. He knows. While the updates would improve his quality of life, itâd only be at the expense of things he values more. If it came sooner, heâd jump at the opportunity. Now it feels like slapping a duct tape on a totaled car.
âLetâs not do the update,â he finally says once you join him in the living room. The morning is still too fresh for this kind of talk but heâs never been the type to put things off. At least he thinks so.Â
You stare at him for a few seconds and then nod, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. You used to sleep much longer. Now it feels to him like youâre getting up at these ridiculous hours just to make sure heâs still there. Not so much physically but the point stands.
âAny particular reason?â Thereâs no accusation, no blame. This conversation could probably be avoided if he was more open about everything. He made his choices though.Â
âItâs too late for it to be meaningful,â he hopes it says enough.Â
Youâve always worried too much about him. And you know him too well. Deep down you mustâve noticed the things he doesnât point out. His fine motor skills are getting worse. His âsensesâ arenât as sharp either. His memories are losing quality. Replaying some of the older ones in the full quality they were recorded in would probably send him into a coma.
You donât need to know all the details. You feel it. You know. And thatâs all that matters.
At this point youâre just wiping away tears, not trying to wake up.
âIt will be better,â he approaches it reasonably, âIt wouldnât change much. And your power bill is already high enough as it is.â
You donât laugh at his joke but you nod.
âAt least we should have more time,â he continues, âI donât mind keeping up what we do now for you. Well, for me too. I really do love you. I donât want to leave you.â
A weak âshut upâ is all you can muster as you stumble forward and fall into his embrace. Your body shakes with sobs. Crying is another ability heâs given up. The fluid had no other function. The emotions can still be felt. Not making the system perform a purely performative task saves some energy and computing power. He rarely used it anyway. Even now, what would it change? You understand how he feels without the show of emotions.
He wraps an arm around your waist and pats your back with the other. His feelings wouldnât get properly conveyed through tears even if he could cry. Itâs too late for them, too. All thatâs left is to make peace and live while he can, as much as his body and system allow him. For now heâll hold you like this. His fingers fist in your shirt. That must be enough.
Thereâs nothing he can say to soothe you, so he doesnât. He lets you cry it out. Youâll think clearer afterwards. Youâll see his point, eventually. Again, you know. You know it all, just as he does.
Just like him, you just need to come to terms with it.Â
âI have some more memory left now,â he whispers into your hair, âLetâs take advantage of that. Weâll decide what to do next when we come to that bridge.â
For now, thatâs all he can come up with.
He hopes that the time until that happens will be long enough for the world to end. So that nobody would get abandoned, nobody would have to mourn and learn to live again.
Perhaps things would be different if he wasnât avoiding the necessary conversation like a coward. Itâs madness to keep doing the same thing over and over again, itâs unsustainable. Things would just keep getting worse. He deserves more - you both do. Perhaps especially you.Â
âYou know what you want to do, right?â you ask with a shaky voice.
âIt doesnât feel right,â Vernon admits, âI knew you knew. Letâs not worry about it now.â
âYou went along with my vision long enough,â you sigh, burying your face deeper into his chest, âLetâs do it your way now.â
He nods, knows you can feel it. His way, for now, is to hold you. It doesnât solve anything. It hurts. He feels his brain whirring while he recollects all the times heâs held you like this. Thereâs nothing more he can commit to memory about how your body feels against his. Thatâs a relief.It doesnât change anything, but if it doesn't make the problem worse, it feels like standing here and holding you until his body gives out isnât the worst thing to do.

In light of this, NVIDIA is almost akin to an automotive component supplier; deriving most of their revenue from four customers with deep coffers, talent, and competitive ambitions. They have no way to reverse this trend. Now, they must gamble the business on their most competent competitors' chip efforts.
Hyperscale customers present extreme risk as they focus relentlessly on cost reduction, substitution, and internal chips efforts. In doing so, they (and key design partners like Marvell, Broadcom, Astera, Arista and AIchip) bring to bear massive amounts of capital and engineering talent to actively undermine NVIDIAâs core business.

Cybernetics with Chinese Characteristics & why we suck at the real Grand Strategy Game
Part 2 - The Quickening
Back in 2023, I wrote this more blog-like post about the mid 20th century McCarthyite purges of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the knock on effects that had - Namely the inception of the Chinese nuclear program, one-child policy and Chinese computing scene.
Since nothing is new under the sun, we have recently witnessed yet another example of America shooting itself in the foot, yet again, due to it's McCarthyite style purge of Chinese technology.
The release of the Chinese created AI system DeepSeek R1 last week has lead to the largest US stock market loss in history with NVIDIA stock decimated.
A record $465 Billion was wiped off its valuation in a single day. In 2024, the government of Turkey spent this much in a year on it's responsibilities?
Why did this happen?
As always, a lot can be put down to US foreign policy, and the in-intended implications of seemingly positive actions.
Do you want to start a trade war?
Back in the relatively uncontroversial days of the first Trump Presidency (Yes it does feel odd saying that) there were scandals with hardware provided by Chinese company Huawei. This led to the  National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 which explicitly banned Huawei and ZTE's hardware from use in US Government institutions. It also meant the US had to authorise US component manufacturer purchases by these companies.
Crucially this had a 27 month window. This allowed both companies to switch suppliers, and production to domestic suppliers. This actually led to Chinese chip advances. Following on from this came the 2022 move by the US Department of Commerce: "Commerce Implements New Export Controls on Advanced Computing and Semiconductor Manufacturing Items to the Peopleâs Republic of China (PRC) ". This further limited the supply of semiconductor, supercomputer, and similar hardware to the PRC and associated countries.
Ok, well so far this is fairly dry stuff. You might think it would hamper Chinese development and, to some extent, it did.
It also proved to be the main catalyst for one financial quant.
Meet the Quant
Meet Liang Wenfeng (ć˘ćé). Educated to masters level, Liang was keen to apply machine learning methods to various field, but couldn't get a break. Finally, in the mid 2000's, he settled on a career investigating quantitative trading using machine learning techniques.
He became successful, founding several trading firms based around using machine learning methods, but his interest in base AI never seemed to cease. It was in 2021 that he started purchasing multiple NVIDIA GPUs to create a side project, leading to the creation of DeepSeek in 2023.
Now, due to import limitations, there were limitations on computation. This, however, did not stop DeepSeek's programming team.
Instead they used it as their strength.
Constrains Breed Innovation
For many years, the Western model of AI releases have focussed on making ever larger and larger models.
Why?
Let's break this down from an evolutionary point of view. Modern Western technology companies are largely monopolistic and monolithic. Many of these companies have previously hired staff at higher salaries not to fill roles, but to deny their competitors, and middle market firms, high-flying staff.
They also closely guard trade secrets. What's the training data? What algorithms were used in construction? Guess you'd better chat up some Silicon Valley bros at parties to find out.
For these kinds of firms, having control over large models, housed in data centres makes perfect sense. Controlling model deployment on their own computing systems, and not using local machines, means that they can not only control their systems more carefully, it also means that they can gatekeep access.
If your business model is to allow people to access your models on your servers, and your employees are focussed on making the biggest, best, models, there is no impetus to innovate more efficient, smaller models.
Companies such as OpenAI therefore have the following traits:
Research/Model focus on size over efficiency
Profit driven culture, with emphasis on closed source code
OpenAI's initial focus was as a non-for-profit developing Artificial General Intelligence. This became a for-profit driven company over time. - âI personally chose the price and thought we would make some money.â - Sam Altman
Staff working within paradigm they set in the early 2020's with established code libraries and direct contact with hardware companies creating chips
Significant capital investment - Upwards of several $ billions
DeepSeek, in comparison, is slightly different
For DeepSeek, necessity made innovation necessary. In order to create similar, or better models, than their counterparts, they needed to significantly optimise their code. This requires significantly more work to create, and write, libraries compared to OpenAI.
DeepSeek was started by financial quants, with backgrounds in mainly mathematics and AI. With a focus on mathematics and research, the main drive of many in the company has been exploration of the research space over concerns about profitability.
DeepSeek has also done what OpenAI stopped years ago: actually releasing the code and data for their models. Not only can these models therefore be run via their own gated servers, anyone can replicate their work and make their own system.
For DeepSeek, their traits were:
Research/Model focus on both efficiency and accuracy
Research driven culture, with open nature - âBasic science research rarely offers high returns on investmentâ - Liang Wenfeng
Strong mathematical background of staff, with ability to work around software, and hardware, constraints
Low capital investment of around $5.5 million
From an evolutionary point of view, DeepSeek's traits have outcompeted those of OpenAI.
More efficient models cost less to run. They also more portable to local machines.
The strong ability of DeepSeek's research focussed staff allowed them to innovate around hardware constraints
Opening up the code to everyone allows anyone (still with the right hardware) to make their own version.
To top it off, the cost to make, and run, DeepSeek R1 is a fraction of the cost of OpenAI's model
House of Cards
Now we can return to today. NVIDIA has lost significant market value. It's not just limited to NVIDIA, but to the entire US technology sector with the most AI adjacent companies losing from 10% to 30% of their valuation in a single day.
The culture, and business model, of OpenAI isn't just limited to OpenAI, but to the entire US technology ecosystem. The US model has been to create rentier-style financial instruments at sky-high valuations.
US tech stocks have been one of the only success stories for America over the past few decades, ever since the offshoring of many manufacturing industries. Like a lost long-unemployed Detroit auto-worker the US has been mainlining technology like Fentanyl, ignoring the anti-trust doctors advice, injecting pure deregulated substances into its veins.
The new AI boom? A new stronger hit, ready for Wall Street, and Private Equity to tie the tourniquet around its arm and pump it right into the arteries.
Like Prometheus, DeepSeek has delved deep and retrieved fire from the algorithmic gods, and shown it's creation to the world. The stock market is on fire, as the traders are coming off of their high, realising they still live in the ruin of barren, decrepit, warehouses and manufactories. The corporate heads, and company leaders reigning over the wreckage like feudal lords, collecting tithes from the serfs working their domain.
A Tale of Two Cities
The rise of DeepSeek isn't just a one-off story of derring-do in the AI world: It's a symbolic representation of the changing world order. DeepSeek is but one company among many who are outcompeting the US, and the world, in innovation.
Where once US free-markets led the world in manufacturing, technology and military capability, now the US is a country devoid of coherent state regulated free-market principles - its place as the singular world power decimated by destroying the very systems which made it great.

By selling the jobs of working class communities to overseas businesses, destroying unions and creating rentier based business models without significant anti-trust measures, US business and political elites have sealed the present fate of the country.
The CCP led, but strongly anti-trust enforcing, China has been able to innovate, ironically, using the free-market principles of Adam Smith to rise up and create some of the world's best innovations. The factories, opened by Western business leaders to avoid union/worker labour costs in their own countries, have led Shenzhen, and similar cities, to become hubs of technological innovation - compounding their ability to determine the future of technologies across the world.
Will America be able to regain its position on top? It's too early to say, but the innovative, talented, people who made America in the 20th century can certainly do it again.
As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said: âThe liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself...
We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for meâand I welcome their hatred.â

Thinking more about inspection. (I have very little to do currently but watch my computer download files to the new hard drive.)
So the oceangate hull was 5" thick and 480 plies (layers of carbon fabric or more accurately tape). This is ludicrously thick for a laminate structure. (I'm honestly questioning how or even if they managed to fully cure through the full thickness, but that's another discussion.)
It's entirely possible they forewent standard, accepted inspection techniques for budgetary purposes (certainly this would have been a factor for not inspecting after dives). But it may also be likely the component couldn't be inspected properly due to its thickness.
The documentary talks about the big crack discovered after testing in the Bahamas, and that they "ground the structure back to see how far it extended". This struck me very weird at the time because that is certainly more expensive than inspection. So either they were too ignorant (and if they didn't know, their supplier certainly would have told them), or they literally couldn't inspect what was among the most safety-critical pieces of hardware in the vehicle.
Composites are temperamental. This thickness would have created a lot of additional uncertainty and likeliness for flaws. Inability to inspect alone should have made this material choice impractical and dangerous to the point of elimination.

June 16 (UPI) -- China's tech company Huawei and SMIC, a contract chip manufacturer, have been added to Taiwan's trade blacklist.
Taiwan put both of these companies on its strategic high-tech commodities entry list. Huawei and SMIC will now need to get export permits from suppliers in Taiwan to receive manufactured goods.
"Huawei and SMIC were among the 601 new foreign entities blacklisted due to their involvement in arms proliferation activities and other national security concerns," Taiwan's International Trade Administration said in a statement.
In addition to being on Taiwan's blacklist, both companies are on a U.S. trade blacklist due to Washington's control on advanced chips.
In November, the U.S. Department of Commerce ordered a halt on chips used for AI services for Chinese customers. According to a report, it could also face a fine from TSMC for supplying Huawei with 2 million compute chips.
The latest restrictions on both companies are expected to have minimal direct impact on TSMC's business, but this has "significant symbolic weight" for the Taiwanese government, according to Brady Wang, associate director at Counterpoint Research.
"It underscores the Taiwanese government's intention to align more closely with international efforts -- particularly those led by the United States -- to curb the transfer of advanced technologies," he said.
"Other Taiwanese firms, especially smaller IC design houses or component suppliers that may have maintained indirect ties to Chinese companies such as Huawei or SMIC, could face tighter scrutiny and increased compliance obligations going forward," he added.

He's not wrong that the changes are smaller than they were in the 1800's but like. That's the low hanging fruit, we all know this, the jump from "not having trains" to "having trains" beats almost any improvement in "trains"
A major change technology has brought to the modern world imo is heavily streamlined manufacturing all across the industrial stack.
If you read like, Bunie Huang's Made in China blog series, in the early 2000's getting a piece of technology made required enormous in-person investment of time and effort working with your manufacturing teams across a pretty broad number of suppliers and industries, you had to get PCB's made, components sourced, moulds designed and set up for injection.
I know people manufacturing small to medium run commercial and industrial electronics, and I did that at my last job. You order machine populated PCB's from your favourite Chinese PCB solutions provider over a web form. If you need ten thousand buttons, you can get that delivered with three emails. Hell, if you want a custom genome to use for some experimental bioreactor, there's multiple competing suppliers who will mail you plasmids that you can customise from online templates and you don't even have to talk to anyone.
And that's just mass manufacturing. If you're making a few thousand of some high end medical equipment, or still in the development phase of design, you can order a titanium laser print to be delivered by the end of the week, or run off a dozen prototypes on your company's fleet of printers using body safe plastics.
Consumer needs don't change much because people are people, we have limited capacity to need things and do things. I've long said that no human can digest more than 50Mbps of media in real time, really. One home cook can only economise their movements so much. A food processor and a pressure cooker can save you some time but the solution to"I want to spend less time cooking at home" will eventually become "don't cook at home, lean on industrial manufacturing of food" and that's fine. There's only so much tech can improve your individual experience before you become the bottleneck.
Faster computers sure, means you can edit video on your phone a little quicker (also hey people ARE editing video on their phone, despite what this blog post says) but it also means Netflix can serve their 4 Petabytes of video library at 400+Gbps from a single server occupying less than 50 liters of space.
It seems disingenuous to act like consumer products feeling stagnant means technology is stagnant.
