Mixed Conditionals
Mixed conditionals Hello English learners. Welcome to a new lesson. Today, we will look at mixed conditional sentences. They are a mixture of the second and third conditionals. Let’s remember these two types of conditional sentences first. The second and third conditional sentences The second conditional is used to express an unreal or imaginary situation which is contrary to the present facts…

Hello! I'm not sure if this blog is still active, but it's worth a shot. When doing something with multiple endings, how would you do a dating sim with multiple endings for each character, like a Good one and a Bad one?
Heya Isaacie! Better late than never I hope?
I did an initial treatment of the idea of multiple endings here. I’d go about it a little differently now, so I’ll give more detail about architecture for a game below.
The basic substance of your question is “how do I make the game interpret the difference between different states?”. If you’re using variables to keep track of things, all you need to do is have the game test if the player has met certain conditions in order to determine an outcome.
For a game with multiple romance-ables, it might work best to separate the romance paths into different files. Then, at the end of each romance file, have the conditionals for if something is a good or bad end. You can bring the player back into the MAIN file for things that are the same across all runs, and then have the game check to see which character they are romancing to go decide where to go.
This would work something like:Main story line ~> romance path chosen ~> go to character’s romance file ~> romance interaction #1 ~> back to main file ~> romance interaction #2 ~> ect.
In that case, it would be simplest to CALL the new file’s first label, then RETURN at the end of the romance scene after choices are made. This will put you back into the main script right where you last left off to do general same story line things. Then you can call the next label in from the romance file and return back, ect.
If the story never intersects again once a main love interest is chosen(think something like Katawa Shoujo) then you can just continue the story in those romance files. (You’ll probably want to set a variable like Romance_X = True in your files too if it affect the main plotline minimally, but you still want ppl to reference it in dialogue or something!)
At the end of the romance files you need some way to determine if they’ve done “good” or “bad” to see what ending they should get. You can do this by keeping track of how many “affection points” they got and deciding if they have below a certain value they get a “Bad End”.
Example:
label determine_ending:        if Leo_love         jump bad_ending    elif Leo_love ....        .....
Ect for each scenario. This only works if they can only romance one person at a time. They get locked into a romance path(whether or not the rest of the game has story beats in common between routes) and so only one person needs to be checked.
But what if you wanna let them romance multiple ppl at once and see which one they got the farthest with?
For something like that you’ll need to put the affections in a dictionary, determine which one is the largest and then do the good/bad ending logic above. The logic would look something like this:
init python:    John_love = 0    Mike_love = 0    Jimmy_love = 0    Sasha_love = 0(game play where you add affection with variable_name += number amount)(then a python block right before the end of the game)python:    affection_dict = {"John": John_love, "Mike": Mike_love, "Jim": Jimmy_love, "Sasha": Sasha_love}    love_holder = []    winner = None
    for x in affection_dict.values():        love_holder.append(x)    love_max = max(love_holder)    for x in affection_dict:            if affection_dict[x] == love_max:                winner = x
Then at the end of your main file you’d type something like this:
if winner == “Sasha”:   jump Sasha_endingselif winner == “Mike”:   jump Mike_endings   ....
Ect for each romanceable. Then you once again determine if they got a good or bad ending with them or not based on affection, which is separate from who they had the most affection with.(they could theoretically have 0, 0, 5, 9 and need a minimum of 10 for any non-bad end, if can even check to see if the max of the list is bigger than 10 and if not just have them giga fail with an ultimate bad end or something. You’d just add a line after love_max = max(love_holder) to say:
if love_max     jump ultra_fail
They won’t even get to the rest of the code to pick the winner because it doesn’t matter lol.)
All that being said, the basic principals are:-have conditions that are failable-figure out what level of failure justifies a bad ending based on how your game plays-test the state of the game based on those conditions-use the result of that state testing to produce an end state result
I know this was long, and a very delayed answer, but I hope this helps you and others! Remember: If your code won’t compile and you don’t know why; who ya gonna call? The Ren’Py Help Desk!

Surrealist Games #1
I bought a book:
A Book of Surrealist Games
I’ve been looking for this for years.
And because I think Tumblr content and surrealism/dadaism share a common origin point, I’ll be posting my thoughts on the games inside and linking to ways we play similar games now.
Tumblr media
First up: Automatism.
Automatic writing or drawing, The Exquisite Corpse, Simulation, Definitions, and Conditionals are all classic examples of games that employ this technique. A century removed from the progenitor of the movement, we play similar games here on the hellsite but with the added advantage of AI. Tools like autocorrect and AI tools such as GPT and DALL-E give us the element of chance in creating at our fingertips.
Definitions is a multiplayer game where one person writes and conceals a question such as “What is love?” and the next player writes an answer without seeing the question. “The shadow formed by a star’s collapse.”
We play several iterations of this game with autocorrect (i.e. Write “my gender is” and let autocorrect finish the sentence: “my gender is a bit not good”). But we also play that game of deliberate misidentification where someone (sometimes genuinely?) asks “Who/what is X?” and what ensues is a long string of wrong answers and corrections. (“Who is Neil Gaiman?” “He’s one of the first people who landed on the moon.” “No you’re thinking of Neil Armstrong. Neil Gaiman is the guy from How I Met Your Mother.” etc.)
The Exquisite Corpse is played by at least three players and is a bit like Mad Libs.
The first person writes a definite or indefinite article and an adjective and conceals it by folding the paper
The second person writes a noun and conceals it
The third person writes a verb and conceals it
The process is repeated with another definite or indefinite article and an adjective5. And finally a noun
This produces sentences like the eponymous: “The exquisite corpse shall drink the new wine.” It’s a bit formulaic but this is one thing that would work better in discord than on Tumblr. (Someone tell @staff we need spoiler text.)
Conditionals is a similar game that would benefit from spoiler text. An ‘If’ statement is written by one player and the next player writes the 'Then’ statement. The examples in the book are pretty random and not all that clever so to anyone who read this, I leave you with the following conditional:
“If matriarchy swallows capitalism…”

when I was like 15, a drunk woman I didn’t know at a party who was smoking a cigarette on the porch started randomly opening up to me about her infertility journey and I told her how I was my parents rainbow baby after multiple miscarriages and fertility treatments said not to lose hope. she comforted me about being a strange kid without many friends my age (hence why I was at a party full of adults thrown by my uncle) and told me everything would work out eventually. the next time I saw her like 2 years later (small town, mutual friends) she was carrying her newborn. I think about that a lot. it’s easy to feel disconnected from people and but sometimes just talking to them and hearing their point of view and relating makes you feel less alone. even if you’re only each other’s company for a few moments.

hey it's me black mold. thanks for running your window air conditioner all summer. whatever you do, do not regularly clean the removable filter. that's not necessary
you should also never ever unplug the air conditioner and stick a flashlight in the vent that blows air to see if we're in there. it's very bad, that place should not be checked
and whatever you do, if you've already made the mistake of unplugging it, don't remove it from the window for cleaning if possible. and whether it's possible to remove the unit or not, don't carefully disassemble the front panel, document where the screws go and plastic bits go, and open up the vent more to be able to get into it easily
as black mold, i'm an expert on this. you should heed my warnings: now, if you've somehow made the mistake of doing all of the above, you should not use warm water and dish soap to CLEAN the inside of the vent thoroughly. DON'T ever use a bottle brush to get into the hard to reach places. and certainly don't rinse and dry the cleaned area before carefully putting it back together
there's nothing wrong with us, black mold. we don't cause or exacerbate breathing conditions like asthma or other illnesses. it's cool, we're cool
furthermore, if you're capable of removing the window unit, DONT take a hose with the same soapy water and wash the portion of the window unit that sits outside the window and is therefore weatherproofed.
whatever you do, don't allow the air conditioner to dry before plugging it back in and turning it on again
and if you have a central air conditioner, you will definitely never ever consult a manual or sources online to perform a similar cleaning procedure on the cooling unit outside.
lastly, if you're physically unable to do the things we (the black mold) warned you not to do above, you should never ever ask someone to help you or hire a service to do it.

the men and boys are innocent too.
we cry "the innocent women and children" to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.
I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.
I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.
I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.
I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.
the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.

what's my biggest pet peeve well it's when someone makes a text post on tumblr dot com in which they are trying to romanticize the notion of the livestock guardian dog but they don't know the distinction between a livestock guardian dog and a herding dog and also they've never met a livestock guardian dog and do not realize what their attitudes towards the sheep that they protect actually are

"wow, you actually like this shit?" as I scroll through her disgusting horny Tumblr likes with one hand. Rubbing lazy circles on her swollen little clit with the other. Degrading her for being such a gross little girl while she mindlessly moans and humps my hand each time I send a filthy disapproving glance her way.

One of my biggest nitpicks in fiction concerns the feeding of babies. Mothers dying during/shortly after childbirth or the baby being separated form the mother shortly after birth is pretty common in fiction. It is/was also common enough in real life, which is why I think a lot of writers/readers don't think too hard about this. however. Historically, the only reason the vast majority of babies survived being separated from their mother was because there was at least one other woman around to breastfeed them. Before modern formula, yes, people did use other substitutes, but they were rarely, if ever, nutritionally sufficient.
Newborns can't eat adult food. They can't really survive on animal milk. If your story takes place in a world before/without formula, a baby separated from its mother is going to either be nursed by someone else, or starve.
It doesn't have to be a huge plot point, but idk at least don't explicitly describe the situation as excluding the possibility of a wetnurse. "The father or the great grandmother or the neighbor man or the older sibling took and raised the baby completely alone in a cave for a year." Nope. That baby is dead I'm sorry. "The baby was kidnapped shortly after birth by a wizard and hidden away in a secret tower" um quick question was the wizard lactating? "The mother refused to see or touch her child after birth so the baby was left to the care of the ailing grandfather" the grandfather who made the necessary arrangements with women in the neighborhood, right? right? OR THAT GREAT OFFENDER "A newborn baby was left on the doorstep and they brought it in and took care of it no issues" What Are You Going to Feed That Baby. Hello?
Like. It's not impossible, but arrangements are going to have to be made. There are some logistics.
