On the roads of Chernihiv region (2) (3) by Oleksandr K
Via Flickr:
(1) The road to the city of Pryluky passed this year between the sunflower fields. (2) The building with the blue door is a shop. Built in Soviet times. It is suspected that people sitting from the top are repairing the roof. (3) For a while we reached the town of Dmyrovka. According to Wikipedia, just over 2000 people live here.

I have been following @headspace-hotel's ecology posting with interest (well worth a read if you're interested it's all fascinating) and doing my own subsequent environmental research.
unfortunately a side effect of knowing things about the local environment is that it makes you sound insane when you talk to normal people. therefore I am posting here where everyone else is insane too
there's construction work going on near my parents house, where I grew up. (this is in the UK so idk if it's the same for y'all over the pond but I have to assume similar) and obviously I was curious about what this does to the ecosystem. I have been watching and doing research. anyway.
when they start doing land development the first thing they do is scrape off all the top soil and sterilise and sell it. now I don't know that much about ecology but that's definitely bad. like. the top soil is the bit of the soil that's alive.
the underneath-soil around here is just awful gritty clay. we had some stuff done a few years ago that left exposed not-topsoil in a pile and while weeds populated it in a matter of months, it took about five years for it to even begin to look natural and have normal (for our area) ecosystem and plants on it.
it's actually still noticeably different in terms of the plants and stuff growing there (blackthorn loves it, but the grasses and wildflowers in the rest of that wild-ish area don't really grow there, so it's still mostly weedy stuff like ragwort, thistles (which the butterflies and solitary bees love) and assorted dandelion-cousin type things). although the grass has been making a valiant effort at the edges.
bcak to construction. when they're done making houses they just kind of drop some turf that they buy in on top of the gardens and maybe a couple of trees and call it a day.
they have taken what was a mixture of farmland and unused (by humans) space (mostly fruit trees, brambles and some other native trees, but the birds and insects liked it) and now literally not even the soil is good. this has to be bad. it's making me feel crazy like surely there's a way of doing this that's less destructive. or at the very least they could not sterilise the top soil and put it back. how is even the turf-that-comes-in-rolls-from-the-garden-centre grass going to grow there. where are the insects going to go.
we have bats in our area (hell knows where they sleep bc the ecology surveyors couldn't find it). badgers. songbirds of assorted kinds. small rodents and the foxes that eat them (and occasionally local chickens). where do they all go after this? what provision is made for the creatures that were here first in these new human neighbourhoods? what happens when they inevitably conflict? (we have people who feed the foxes in the area already and its only going to get worse)
there is no conclusion to this post

The construction work gremlin - he builds the construction site overnight because he likes the old building better while the construction workers demolish the old building. It's a beautiful cycle.
