Miss Ortega | j.o
Part 12
Just as all her students enter the classroom, Jenna excitedly stands up from her desk, ready to explain a new topic.
"Good morning, guys! Today we're going to start exploring the application of differential and integral calculus in physics," Jenna says enthusiastically.
Murmurs of disapproval fill the room, and Jenna feels slightly uncomfortable. "But teacher... we just got back from vacation," our class representative says. Jenna rolls her eyes in boredom and heads towards the chalkboard, picking up a piece of chalk.
"Well... if you don't want the explanation, we can just go straight to the exam," Jenna shrugs indifferently and genuinely smiles. "After all, I recall assigning it over the holidays," she concludes.
A silence takes over the room, and Jenna smiles triumphantly. Leaning on the desk with one elbow and supporting my head with a hand, I watch amused by Jenna's display of power. To be honest, I recognized this topic almost immediately, as it was one of the first explanations Jenna gave me privately.
My eyes rest on the figure of the brunette, and I take a moment to analyze her. This morning, the teacher was wearing a skirt that reached just below her thighs, a light pink crop top, and a leather jacket covering her shoulders. I bite my lower lip and cross my legs.
"As I thought," Jenna says, not receiving a response, she assumes the option to explain. "Let's take an example of a bullet fired vertically upwards. We want to find out its maximum height and the time it takes to reach that height."
Jenna draws a simple diagram of the bullet moving upwards.
"To start, we know that velocity is the distance traveled in time. In our case, velocity decreases due to gravity's acceleration as the bullet moves upwards. The equation describing the bullet's velocity will be v = -gt + v₀, where g represents the acceleration due to gravity and v₀ is the initial velocity," Jenna writes the velocity equation on the board.
"Now, to determine the maximum height reached by the bullet, we need to find the equation for its position over time. We can do this by integrating the velocity equation with respect to time. The integral will give us the position equation. Do you know what it means to integrate a function?" Jenna looks at the class, waiting for a response. Her amber-colored eyes briefly land on mine, almost inviting me to participate, but I decide to respect her role even though my classmates haven't opened their books during the holidays.
"No, I don't," a student behind me says.
"I appreciate the honesty," Jenna sighs and starts jotting down some notes on the board. "Integrating a function means finding the area under the curve of that function with respect to the horizontal axis. In our case, we're looking for the equation of the projectile's position over time. The equation will be x = ∫v dt."
Jenna writes the position equation on the board.
"Now, to determine the maximum height, we need to find the point at which the projectile's velocity becomes zero. We can do this by setting the velocity equation equal to zero and solving for time t. Once we have time t, we can substitute it into the position equation to find the maximum height reached by the projectile," Jenna continues explaining the process step by step, providing numerical examples, and helping the students understand differential and integral calculus in the specific context of the projectile problem.
"Now that we've understood the concepts of differential and integral calculus in the context of projectile motion, I want to give you an exercise to solidify your understanding. Take notes!" Jenna raises her voice, recapturing the attention of her now-awake students.
Jenna writes the exercise on the board.
"Given a projectile fired vertically upwards with an initial velocity of 40 m/s, I want you to calculate: 1. The equation of the projectile's velocity as a function of time. 2. The equation of the projectile's position as a function of time. 3. The maximum height reached by the projectile. 4. The time it takes for the projectile to reach its maximum height."
I start taking notes, writing down each part of the exercise, yawning slightly.
"Do you have any questions about the exercise? Make sure to use the formulas we've learned and show your complete steps in your work. Once you're done, we can review your answers and discuss them together," Jenna smiles at the class and sits at her desk, starting to scribble something on a piece of paper.
Jenna gives the students time to work on the exercise. During this period, she walks around the classroom to answer questions and provide assistance if needed. Once the students have completed the exercise, Jenna can review their answers, solve the exercise together, and provide additional explanations if necessary. This allows the students to apply the concepts they've learned and consolidate their understanding through practical exercises.
As I continue writing the exercise, I sense Jenna's presence behind me. The teacher leans towards my body, analyzing my calculations, and tentatively lets our fingers brush against each other, seeking minimal contact between our bodies. I glance sideways at Jenna and nervously smile. A strand of her hair obscures our faces, and I timidly lean towards her neck, pressing my lips against her skin.
Jenna slightly startles as she feels the contact of my lips on her neck but quickly regains composure, not wanting to draw attention. "What are you doing?" Jenna whispers through her teeth, and with a smile, I return to writing, feeling the echo of the kiss on my lips.
"It's okay, no one's watching," I smirk mischievously, and Jenna slowly moves away from my desk, breaking the contact between our fingers. A folded piece of paper enters my field of vision, and furrowing my brow, I read the message.
"See you here after lunch, we need to discuss the contest." The note wasn't signed, but the neat and orderly handwriting immediately makes me understand it's from Jenna. It seems the teacher had finally decided to resume our private lessons in the afternoon.
Honestly, I had completely forgotten about this contest.
"Alright, guys, we'll review this on Wednesday," Jenna declares after hearing the bell indicating the change of period. I grab my backpack and walk towards the door, waiting for my best friend, who is still packing her things.
My eyes catch Ajax approaching me.
After Jenna's class, Ajax approaches Enid in the classroom and sees her organizing her belongings. Ajax is saddened by what has transpired between them and wants a chance to clear things up. Kindly, he approaches Enid and asks if they can find a quiet place to talk.
I observe their interaction with a sense of embarrassment, not wanting to intervene.
"Hey, Enid, can I talk to you? I'd like to clear things up between us, and I think finding a quiet place might help us sort out our differences. Can we find a private spot where we can talk?" Ajax says softly, almost bashfully.
Enid looks at Ajax and notes his sincerity in his expression. Despite the sadness she's feeling, she decides to give the conversation a chance. Her blue eyes glance in my direction, conveying with a look that everything is alright.
"Alright, Ajax. We can go to the library. There, we'll be quiet enough to talk without distractions," Enid takes her backpack and slings it over her shoulder. "Don't worry, t/n, see you later," she mutters quickly before catching up with her boyfriend.
Ajax smiles slightly, grateful for Enid's willingness. Both of them head to the library, hoping to resolve their issues and get closer again.
I smile to myself and sigh as I head off to find my friends. After all, I missed Erick, Spencer, and even Diego.
(...)
Returning from the cafeteria, I walk quickly and nervously scan the surrounding environment. With quick eyes, I ensure that nobody is watching me, trying to avoid indiscreet glances. Once convinced that I've gone unnoticed, I approach the entrance of the famous room, the place where I knew I would find Jenna.
I slowly close the door.
As I approach, a pleased smile spreads across my face. A mischievous expression forms in my eyes, anticipating the encounter that is about to unfold. With my heart racing from excitement, I silently move closer behind Jenna, who, unaware, is focused on something in front of her.
I can't contain the happiness filling my chest, and I smile widely. My lips curve upwards in an expression of complicity, while my eyes shine with excitement. I feel like I'm about to make a daring or playful move, and my gaze becomes even more lively and intense.
My fists clench, as if I'm preparing for something. My breathing becomes shorter and faster as I get closer to Jenna. Everything around me seems to slow down, as if time is elongating, waiting for what's about to happen.
I'm just a few steps away from Jenna. My heart races, and with a determined motion, I reach out and gently touch Jenna's shoulder. A shiver of excitement runs down my spine as I eagerly await Jenna's reaction.
The teacher turns around and looks at me with a smile on her lips. "You've finally arrived," Jenna says as she places what seemed to be documents on the desk. With a smile on her lips, she gazes at me intently. Once confirming that we're alone and that no one is watching us, Jenna approaches and plants a soft kiss on my lips.
I smile against her lips, placing a hand on her waist.
"Sorry for the delay, I was chatting with Spencer," I murmur absentmindedly, and Jenna raises an eyebrow in confusion. "Who's Spencer?"
Spencer Hastings has an elegant and sophisticated appearance. She has a slender, well-proportioned figure with graceful curves. Her height makes her stand out in a crowd, giving her an aura of grace and style. Her movements are agile and confident, revealing her determination and intelligence.
Her facial features are delicate and harmonious. She has an oval-shaped face with perfectly smooth and radiant skin. Her complexion is luminous, with a slight tan that gives her a healthy and vibrant look. She has large, penetrating eyes that can range from dark brown to green, conveying intelligence and intensity.
Spencer has a mane of dark, glossy hair that falls in soft waves. Her hair is usually impeccably styled, reflecting her organized and precise personality. She sometimes ties it up in elegant hairstyles, showcasing her ability to look perfect on any occasion.
Her smile is radiant and contagious, lighting up her face with genuine joy. She has white and regular teeth, giving her smile a luminous appearance.
Overall, Spencer Hastings embodies the image of a charming, confident woman with great appeal. Her beauty and impeccable style contribute to making her a notable presence in any context she's in.
"She's a close friend of Enid's... and your student, dummy," I smile, shrugging with indifference. "Why the question? Maybe you're jealous?" I ask, laughing.
"I'm not a kid, t/n, I just asked a question like your girlfriend would," Jenna admits.
It's the first time she openly acknowledges the nature of our bond. With a slightly trembling voice, she whispers the words that change the meaning of our encounter: "Because you're my girlfriend, aren't you?"
I'm surprised by Jenna's revelation, but I smile with love and tenderness. That sentence conveys a deep sense of awareness and mutual commitment that strengthens our bond. It's a moment of great significance, a step forward in our relationship.
"Yes, we are," I confirm, and Jenna looks at me with shining eyes.
Jenna clears her throat and looks at me with a smile. "Well... then... we urgently need to resume rehearsals for the contest," Jenna admits, and I smile mischievously. The teacher looks at me in confusion, and I bite my lower lip.
"How about we spend some time together now? We can make the most of it," I suggest, trailing a finger across her chest. Jenna rolls her eyes with a smile on her lips.
Jenna puts her hand around my tie and brings me closer to her lips, accepting my proposal.
POV OLIVIA RODRIGO
"Idiot," I smile softly at Dove's message, wondering just how foolish I could be.
I'm walking through the hallways towards the Science classroom, hoping to catch the teacher. I need to talk to him and ask when I'll have to give the presentation he asked me to prepare over the break.
A noise comes from a distance.
As I approach the empty classroom, a knot forms in my stomach, and a sense of unease envelops me. Something compels me to move forward despite the fear gripping me. The noises from the room grow clearer, making my curiosity unbearable.
When I swing open the classroom door, my heart stops for a moment. Before me stand Jenna, our charming math teacher, and t/n. Their compromising position and locked gazes hit me like a punch to the gut.
A feeling of betrayal surrounds me, accompanied by deep sadness. I can't believe that the person I've always desired, the girl I'm in love with, is involved in a forbidden relationship with our teacher.
The famous girl t/n had hinted at some time ago.
While I wanted to give Dove a chance, an incredible girl, I couldn't stop feeling something for t/n overnight. The hopes and dreams I'd hidden in my heart dissolve in an instant.
Tears well up in my eyes, but I try to hold them back. I'm paralyzed, unable to move or express the thousand emotions churning within me. I'm trapped in a limbo between the love I feel and the disappointment that engulfs me.
I watch Jenna and t/n quickly separate, panic and guilt painting their faces. Their words remain voiceless, but the silence speaks a language heavy with tension and pain. Jenna looks wide-eyed at t/n, and the latter looks at me in surprise.
"Liv, wait," t/n's voice sounds concerned as she approaches me, wanting to talk to me. My vision blurs, and I take a step back, leaving the room and closing the door behind me.
A damn déjà vu.
My legs weaken, and I lean against the wall to find a semblance of support. My heart is broken, unable to face the harsh reality I've just discovered.
"We need to talk," t/n's voice reaches me from behind, and in this moment, I wish she'd just disappear.

“Genshin character designs are bad.”
You really can’t navigate through the Genshin fandom without hearing this take. It’s stale at this point, but it’s…. also true. Except that’s usually not what people are actually saying. The true question up for debate: Are Genshin character designs ugly?
It irks me because there is validity to the original statement, and yet the conversation immediately moves into the territory of strictly opinion, leaving the true discussion never to be had.
So I’m having it… with myself…. in the form of a long post, because actually I find Genshin an interesting character design case study.
Before I really get into it I must address the elephant in the room; are Genshin’s character designs colorist?
Yes. Moving on.
Okay, okay, I’ll address it a little, Genshin has a problem with colorism. It’s a fiercely debated topic and honestly it’s one of the only real valid discussions I see around Genshin’s designs. That being said, I have nothing new to add to the conversation. If you don’t know why, sorry I’m not qualified to answer that, but you’re in luck because tons of qualified people have explained it across all platforms.
What I am partially equipped to talk about is character design. I’m no expert but I have taken a few formal classes on the subject, so I do have some insight to share. Character design at its core is usually quantified by how much of a character’s personality can be clearly determined from sight alone and how recognizable their silhouette is (though I’m not gonna touch on that today). Now there’s a lot of factors that go into both, but the fundamental thing that contributes to both is something known as shape language.
Shape has meaning. What that meaning is often depends on culture factors that determine your associations, but the Western simplification of shape is that circles are good-natured, rectangles/ squares are reliable, and triangles are energized. (these are my own personal words for them, there are countless ways to go about describing these associations) Shapes are then combined with each other to create more complex associations, and so on and so forth. It’s impossible to create a character without evoking some form of shape language, because art at its core is just shapes. The classic example are the round shapes seen in Mickey Mouse, though often times it’s far more subtle, like how Barbie has soft, round lines in her hair and face, but her hourglass figure is comprised of triangles to tell you she’s sexy, but the soft curves say she’s sweet not sexual— and it quickly gets very complicated. Basically character designs are rarely comprised of one shape alone, and when combined the “vibes” they evoke become complex.
So what does this have to do with Genshin? Genshin has poor shape language. The most obvious example of this are the faces. Genshin has same face syndrome, which I partially contribute to budget constraints with the models seeing as they reuse them over and over. Though it also has a lot to do with Genshin’s need for their characters to be conventionally attractive. Everyone must be beautiful and, as the current trend in anime artstyles dictates, not look a day over 12. The only thing that changes is the eye shape, but even then, it really doesn’t. There’s diversity between the male and female models, but calling it diversity seems generous, because they are practically the same. All the viewer has to go on to differentiate between faces are the expressions (and color but we’ll get there), which are also limited by the models.
The poor quality of the shape language continues into the bodies, seeing as the only thing that really changes is the height, not a lot of room for show casing contrast. (Also body diversity is just a good thing to have for the sake of having body diversity.) Visual contrast is one of the key things good shape language should deliver. It’s within this contrast that the viewer will have the opportunity to compare and thus make these associations. One character design may tell you things based on previous knowledge but it’s like an experiment without a control group.
Then we get to the character’s outfits and hairstyles. While it’s true there is a fair amount of diversity in clothing, the shape language continues to falter. Genshin characters have so much going on constantly in their designs that it seems like that should provide plenty of opportunities to showcase personality. Unfortunately what ultimately happens is that the details compete amongst themselves so much that they overshadow any sort of unified message they might have had about who this character is. Basically there’s too many different shapes. They don’t create a pattern and therefore don’t form any strong associations. You can have a good design with a lot of details but they should communicate a pattern together. A design is not good simply because it has a lot of detail. I will say there are definitely times where the clothing and hair do actually come through to tell me stuff about the character, but overall this over designing tends to be a detriment.
Genshin’s hair while in different styles usually relies on the same type of pointy strands and blunt edges.
(these characters were randomly selected to prove my point that you can quite literally pick any character in genshin and they will have at least one of these two components)

On their own pointy strands might tell us something, but considering every character has them, the pattern within a single character is rendered moot. “If everyone’s super, no one is.” Of course how they choose to wear their hair does speak to the character but its effect is limited when the structure of the hair is fundamentally the same. And then when you consider that the styling of many of these hairstyles doesn’t actually say a whole lot, it becomes obvious that Genshin is more concerned with creating hair that stands out. The problem is that details, asymmetry for example, normally tell us about the character, but considering so many hairstyles utilize asymmetry, it looses its meaning. Overall I will say I think Genshin is more of a 50/50 toss up on whether or not the hair suits the character.
I want to take a moment to point out a couple hair style designs in Genshin I think are really lovely and work very well.

And now I would like to do the same with some outfits.

(honorable mention to Bennett for being over accessorized in a way that actually tells you about his personality (goggles, a scar, bandaids, work gloves, utility belt), to Barbara for somehow mashing the concept of a nun and an idol together, to Klee for her childish whimsy and finally to Scaramoche for the sheer amount of subtle character growth motifs fit into all three of his outfits (the cultural stuff is really cool too))
Genshin I will say does a great job of creating and repeatedly using the elemental imagery as well as Khaneira’ah’s star. I also appreciate that every Archon has that ombre hair shift that glows during their burst. Makes them feel unique.
I think Genshin shines the brightest when they successfully incorporate cultural elements into their designs however, the only nation that does this with any sort of consistency is Inazuma. Inazuma’s aesthetic is so instantly recognizable. No one dresses exactly the same, but there are common through lines in the shoes, the style of the armor, and patterns in the clothes. (The design aesthetic is so strong that even after Scara got a Sumeru makeover he managed to keep elements that were clearly identifiable as Inazuman) Every other nation falls short in this department. I will give credit to the knights as there is some level of consistency in their designs, mostly in the metallic detailing; not quite a uniform but there is some commonality. Liyue does have cultural influence that definitely shows but it suffers from an overall lack of consistency in aesthetic, and doesn’t lean into its Chinese inspiration the same way Inazuma does. Mondstadt on the other hand is just vaguely European, but also half the time not even.
And then there’s Sumeru. I distinctly remember looking at the full Sumeru cast the first time and thinking that none of the them looked like they came from the same place. (It’s almost as if Sumeru is based on a bunch of separate countries that are culturally very different.) Pretty much no character has any real ties to any any real culture, but instead they just sorta grab vague elements. And at its worse just leans into orientalism (Nilou and Dori). I think personality wise the designs do a fairly stable job of saying at least something about their characters (Dehya and Kaveh). The designs do well individually but between the vague references and inconsistencies they falter. (I will say Cyno’s whole design being a reference to Yu-Gi-Oh is both hilarious, charming, and also mildly appropriative.)
On the topic of appropriation I think it’s important to note that Inazuma suffers from this too. While I absolutely love the way a lot of Japanese elements were integrated, outfits like Yae Miko’s shrine maiden garb bring forth this sexualization of cultural dress that I’m not particularly fond of. But then again you can also critique Rosaria’s sexy nun design for the same thing.
I also want to touch on something briefly because it’s important to note, but it’s a separate, much bigger conversation; Genshin, like anime, falls into a trap of catering their style to lolicon and shotacon enjoyers. It’s the reason all the characters look so young, why all the age discourse exists, why they refuse to confirm ages, and why all the children with the toddler model have some weird age work around. I don’t like it. It’s gross.
Another brief mention because it’s its own conversation; the female characters in Genshin are often over sexualized. Their clothes are skin tight, they almost always have weird random cut-outs, their skirts and dresses are designed to show off their breasts and asses, and all of their designs are high fem regardless of their personality. Give a female character baggy pants Genshin I dare you. Dori doesn’t count, she’s a toddler model in just a bra. I don’t have a problem with a female character being hot, but when that’s the only requirement…. it’s tiring. The classic female character design video game debate…. yah.
I think my overarching issue with Genshin’s clothing design is it says nothing about whose these people are. What jobs do they do? What do these accessories say about them personally? Take Yanfei. She’s a lawyer, yet nothing about her outfit speaks to that in the slightest. I remember the first time I sat down and looked at all the playable characters with a friend of mine. I didn’t play at the time and we thought it would be fun to see if I could guess their personalities. As you can imagine I did pretty poorly, and that’s because these designs just don’t suggest a whole lot.
And then we get to color.
Color is probably the most complicated part of art let alone character design. I feel as though we all have some familiarity with the concept of color coding in character design. The classic red/blue character foils. Color often suggests specific traits similar to the way shape language does, except unlike shape language color coding doesn’t always apply. You can’t just assign a character a color and call it coding, the character has to physically have that color on them in some significant manner. For example Naruto is clearly an orange coded character. He appears in the color throughout the series, but I couldn’t classify Eren Yeager as a green coded character even if it suited his personality (which it doesn’t) because it’s a uniform everyone wears. Attack on Titan does not evoke color coding the way Naruto does, so it’s not applicable.
With Genshin color is complicated. Genshin does have an established color pattern for all the elements, but not every character wears the color of their element. Now normally I would say just having a color pattern for the elements wouldn’t be enough to justify character color coding (since it would fall back into the uniform category), but in Genshin their visions connect to their personalities, so therefore the color of the elements is connected to them. For some the color coding is very obvious (Kaeya & Diluc) and for others it’s practically nonexistent (Yun Jin & Heizou). In all honestly I don’t know what to make of this other than Genshin is inconsistent in their elemental color coding but always consistent in their high saturation. Because color is complicated and a weaker area of mine it is equally likely that I’m missing something or that Genshin isn’t coding anything and it’s all pure aesthetics.
Which brings me to my final point; aesthetics. Hoyo as a company cares that you spend money. That is the number one goal at the end of the day. That’s why all their characters are conventionally attractive, why their art style is the way it is, why their shape language suffers, and why their outfits are overly detailed. It’s all about aesthetics. As a brand Genshin cares less about their story and more about how pretty their characters look, because if their characters are pretty then you’ll spend money. It’s not like Hoyo designed characters with bad shape language because they were ignorant. They knew exactly what they were doing when they sculpted every last visually pleasing strand of pointy hair.
Which brings me back to the real question that people were actually arguing over in the first place; are Genshin characters ugly?
I can’t answer that question. I mean they weren’t designed to be ugly, but if they don’t appeal to your taste, then to you they are ugly. But it’s more important to understand that “bad” and “ugly” are not the same. Genshin character designs are bad by professional standards but that doesn’t mean you can’t like them. Genshin designs can be both bad and likable, bad and pretty, bad and cute. Those are two vastly different things. It’s the same way people adore cult classic movies. They’re not good in the eyes of a critic, otherwise they wouldn’t be niche. They’re cult classics because people like them. Personal taste is just that. Personal.
But the most important question of all; do I like the Genshin Impact character designs?
I didn’t use to but I gotta say, they’ve grown on me.

¶ … Marketing Success of Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company Pfizer is undeniably the most successful pharmaceutical company in existence. It rated first in U.S. sales from April 2002 through March 2003, with a total sales number of $20 billion USD, which accounted for 10% of the market share, and 12% growth. It ranked #1 ahead of GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, and Merck & Co., which took the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively. Much, if not most, of Pfizer's success is due to the corporation's marketing genius, which is considered to be among the best in the industry. Pfizer also has one of the best safety records in the industry, which helps in gaining investors and trust in the company. Interestingly, unlike most large corporations, Pfizer draws revenue from a limited number of products. It is the marketing power demonstrated by Pfizer, in which brand recognition plays a huge role, that has resulted in astronomical profits for the pharmaceutical company. Company Structure and Marketing Strategies According to Pfizer.com, the pharmaceutical corporation's mission statement is: We dedicate ourselves to humanity's quest for longer, healthier, happier lives through innovation in pharmaceutical, consumer and animal health products." To achieve the objectives outlined in this mission statement, Pfizer contains several different corporate entities, including a marketing group, a Global Market Analytics (GMA) group, as well as a department focused on human resources and organizational effectiveness. The marketing group at Pfizer has helped make Pfizer's products top-sellers in their class continuously throughout the years, which has set industry records, and has increased revenues for the company by 50% over the last five years. The Worldwide Marketing team at Pfizer is an integral part of the company's brand, customer segment and therapeutic specialists. This marketing group works with medical professionals and market analytic groups in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of customer needs and develop innovative marketing strategies. This group also collaborates with external professional and consumer organizations and medical communication companies to make sure that product strategies are heading in the right direction. The marketing principles utilized by Pfizer guides every aspect of the corporation's business. There are five main principles that are fundamental to Pfizer's business practices. First, the work conducted by Pfizer is grounded in science. With solid clinical research as a foundation, Pfizer's marketing group uses its credibility and knowledge to develop important relationships within the medical community. Second, Pfizer takes an integrated approach to its marketing strategies. Innovation is promoted through the encouragement of teamwork within and across marketing groups. This also allows Pfizer to respond flexibly and promptly to changes in the market. Third, Pfizer conducts rigorous research and analysis, which are essential in the creation and expansion of markets. This allow Pfizer to identify areas that have unmet needs, and to develop strategies to facilitate effective customer relations. This leads to the fourth marketing principle practiced by Pfizer, which is maintaining the customer as the central focus. Pfizer strives to gain a comprehensive understanding of the needs of customers amidst ever-changing and complicated markets. Fifth, and finally, Pfizer enhances their branding power through the use of education, opinion leader development, and product-specific, tailored marketing strategies. These elements ensure that the brands produced by Pfizer are highly visible and clearly differentiated. Pfizer is continually trying to communicate complex, scientific messages in an effective manner to a diverse audience. This is accomplished via the marketing group, which targets customers that range from doctors and patients to third-party payers and patient advocacy groups. Another integral part of Pfizer's structural make-up is the Global Market Analytics (GMA) group. This is a group of internal market research consultants that advise the many pharmaceutical marketing teams that operate within Pfizer. GMA is of utmost importance to Pfizer as a whole, in that the group identifies areas of need that are unmet, and assist the marketing teams in developing better, more effective strategies for customer relations with potential, existing and prior customers. This group uses qualitative or exploratory research, along with ideation and complex quantitative analysis to aid in the development of appropriate measures of marketing success. GMA consists of four functional areas, which are all important to the success of Pfizer. The first area is the Product Research Group. This group works closely with a marketing team to develop strategies for marketing the brands represented by Pfizer. This includes conducting research with physicians, consumers, and managed care organizations. The second functional area of GMA is the New Products Market Research Group. This groups works in close proximity with Pfizer Global Research and Development at the early stages of a products existence, in order to gather data that may help in the determination of the product's potential value in a commercial market. In addition, this group also helps in the development of clinical studies required for the labelling of products. The third functional area of GMA is the Customer and Local Market Research Group. This group has several responsibilities, including the analysis of product-specific data in local markets, as well as the uncovering and analysis of current and developing trends in relevant populations, including the medical community. The fourth, and final, functional area of GMA is the Management Science Group. This group uses quantitative modeling analyses, systematic frameworks and organization learning to address a range of sales and strategic marketing issues. These issues include field force structure and needs of sales expansion. Essentially, this group helps internal customers and senior management effectively make decisions grounded in a deeper understanding of trends and challenges currently facing the marketplace. The department focused on human resources and organizational effectiveness is also a fundamental part of the processes involved in the success of Pfizer. Human Resources plays a vital role in the Pfizer corporation, due to dedication to the recruitment of top-notch talent from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and furthermore ensuring that these talented individuals stay within the company and grow professionally. Pfizer accomplishes this by offering generous compensation and benefits, as well as numerous developmental initiatives and meticulous organizational planning. Three distinct groups compose the Human Resources entity at Pfizer. These groups are the Human Resource Generalists, the Strategic Staffing Group, and the Human Resources Strategic Group. The Human Resource Generalists guide Pfizer's main business units through important processes, such as colleague development and reviews of compensation. This groups works along with the Strategic Staffing Group, which is responsible for attracting and hiring talent to work with Pfizer. These two groups know the business of Pfizer's internal clients, and provide continuous support to sales, marketing, financial and medical teams within Pfizer. Strategies are devised for talent development and retention, and the needs regarding skills and capabilities of colleagues are addressed. The Human Resources Strategic Process Group consults on human resource processes to both the Human Resource Generalists and the Strategic Staffing Group. Some of these processes include compensation analysis and colleague communications. Pfizer also has a Worldwide Organizational Effectiveness and Consulting Services Team (OE and CS) works within the company to solve complex business problems, enhance business performance, and increase the company's organizational capabilities. This group works collaboratively with Human Resources, Pfizer Global Learning and Development, as well as other functional groups within the company, in order to pursue each project with an analytic, customized approach. OE and CS plays six roles within Pfizer. First, this group is involved in the design of the organization, the improvement of processes, as well as alliance support. Second, OE and CS plays a crucial role in leadership development and succession planning for Pfizer. Third, this group also aids in the improvement of individual and team performance. Fourth, OE and CS are involved in ensuring that the field sales force employed by Pfizer is operating effectively. Fifth, this group helps in the task of change management along with colleagues in Information Technology. Sixth, and finally, OE and CS are involved consultations with external customers on a limited basis. Another integral part of Pfizer's success is their effective processes of product development. The Product Development Team is the connective core of Pfizer, which connects research, marketing, and upper management of Pfizer. This group identifies opportunities for commercial development, and prepares both the products and the market for lunch. Therefore this part of the company is crucial for the marketing success of products. The Product Development Team provides guidance to Pfizer Global Research and Development and Pfizer leadership throughout the research and development process. This group consults on the allocation of resources and management of the product portfolio. Product Development at Pfizer is divided into four main functional areas, including Market Assessment, New Product Development, Portfolio Decision Analysis, and Global Development Teams. All of these structural units that make up Pfizer are important to their marketing success. As mentioned earlier, the marketing principles embraced by Pfizer guide every aspect of the company's conduct. Marketing Strengths Pfizer is considered to have one of the best marketing forces in the business. One key strength embodied by Pfizer is its brand power. Pharmaceutical companies are placing increasing reliance on their brands to sustain sales on drugs that come off patent. Pfizer enormously profitable drug Viagra is prime example of the influence that a brand name can have. Basically, Viagra has become synonymous is consumers' minds with the concepts of stamina, energy, strength, and power (Hering, 2001). Viagra is a trademark that is protected in more than 140 countries, and it has been the subject of several infringements that try to embody the values that are elicited by viagra into the identity of other products. Pfizer has attained such enormous success with Viagra due to its marketing of the product, which includes television commercials and face-to-face meetings between Pfizer sales reps and doctors, as well as other, often more impactful strategies, such as outreach programs for patients. Pfizer spent $87.3 million last year to advertise Viagra in the U.S. alone. Another successful means of marketing is through the use of a website. Nearly every major pharmaceutical marketer has created a separate website for its major brands, such as the creation of viagra.com by Pfizer. Websites allow consumers to feel as though information regarding medications is always available to them, and this could in turn increase sales. Another strength exhibited by Pfizer is its ability to extract huge profits from a limited number of products, such as Viagra and Lipitrol. Despite, the limited number of products, the marketing power of Pfizer has been able to draw a great deal of attention to its porfolio, which has resulted in increased growth and profits. In fact, the company's operating profitability is approximately 19-20% above the industry average. Threats The threats experienced by Pfizer exist in the form of rival pharmaceutical companies that want a share of the markets they dominate. Examples of these markets include drugs to treat erectile dysfunction and high cholesterol. Recently, new drugs have emerged on the market that may challenge Pfizer in its monopoly of being the sole provider of medication for erectile dysfunction. The marketing genius of Pfizer had persuaded more than 16 million American men to try viagra, but this was only half of the estimated 30 million who suffer from sexual dysfunction. Furthermore, of those 16 million that tried Viagra, more than half did not renew their prescriptions. This leaves a lot of room for competition to creep in and take advantage of this vulnerability on the part of Viagra. The main competitive threat to Viagra is a drug called Cialis that was launched by Eli Lilly & Co. This drug may even be more advantageous than Viagra, due to the ability for patients taking Cialis to have a drink if they want, and the fact that this new drug allows for a potency window of 36 hours, rather than the 1/2-hour to 4-hour window provided by Viagra. This drug has the potential of being a serious threat to the pharmaceutical empire established by Pfizer, which was built substantially on the shoulders of Viagra's success. References Arndt, M. But why should you consider investing in an education franchise? In this blog, we will explore the benefits, market trends, and success factors that make education franchising a smart business move.
The Booming Education Sector
Education is a recession-proof industry. Whether it is K-12 schools, higher education institutions, coaching centers, or vocational training programs, there is always a demand for learning. According to industry reports, the global education market is expected to grow exponentially, with a significant share being driven by franchising models.
Key Market Trends:
Rise of EdTech: Online learning and digital platforms are revolutionizing the education space, making franchises more scalable.
Growing Middle-Class Aspirations: More families are willing to invest in quality education for their children.
Skill Development Initiatives: Governments worldwide are promoting skill-based education, opening doors for vocational training franchises.
Hybrid Learning Models: Combining online and offline learning ensures a broader reach and better engagement.
Benefits of Investing in an Education Franchise
1. Established Brand Recognition
One of the biggest advantages of investing in a franchise business in the education sector is leveraging an already established brand name. This reduces the time and effort needed to build trust among parents and students.
2. Proven Business Model
Education franchises operate on a tested and successful business model, ensuring a higher success rate than starting an independent institute.
3. Comprehensive Training and Support
Franchisors provide extensive training, curriculum support, operational guidance, and marketing strategies to help franchisees succeed.
4. High Demand and Long-Term Growth
The need for quality education and skill development is never-ending, ensuring sustainable revenue and long-term success.
5. Multiple Revenue Streams
Education franchises can generate income through tuition fees, certification programs, workshops, and online courses, diversifying income sources.
Steps to Start an Education Franchise
1. Research and Select the Right Franchise
Choose a reputable franchisor with a strong track record, robust support system, and alignment with your business goals.
2. Understand the Financial Investment
Evaluate the franchise fee, royalty payments, operational costs, and expected return on investment.
3. Secure a Strategic Location
For offline models, ensure the institute is located in a high-footfall area with easy accessibility.
4. Hire Qualified Educators
The success of an education franchise depends on skilled and passionate educators.
5. Marketing and Branding
Utilize digital marketing, social media, and local networking to attract students and build credibility.
Challenges and How to Overcome Them
1. Initial Investment and Operational Costs
While the upfront costs can be high, choosing a franchise with strong ROI potential ensures profitability in the long run.
2. Competition in the Market
Differentiate your franchise by offering unique courses, excellent faculty, and innovative teaching methodologies.
3. Regulatory and Compliance Issues
Ensure you meet all local education policies, licensing, and accreditation requirements to operate legally and ethically.
Conclusion
Investing in a franchise business in the education sector is a smart and rewarding decision. With the demand for education continuously rising, this industry offers sustainable growth, financial stability, and the satisfaction of making a meaningful impact on society. Whether you are an entrepreneur, educator, or investor, an education franchise could be the perfect venture for long-term success.
