Why is it that in a world where everything fits in your pocket i long for more complex ‘single use’ technology.
Not in the since that I can only use these things one time, but in the since that each thing only has one purpose.
A camera, film and digital.
An iPod/pDAP with good headphones.
A kindle.
A portable gaming system.
Don’t get me wrong, I love having a phone, I love technological advancement, I love having the world in my pocket.
But there’s something in the ritual of these things that had been part of everyday life that I didn’t get to experience just before my birth that I long for.

how to build a digital music collection and stuff
spotify sucks aaaass. so start downloading shit!!
file format glossary
.wav is highest quality and biggest
.mp3 is very small, but uses lossy compression which means it's lower quality
.flac is smaller than .wav, but uses lossless compression so it's high quality
.m4a is an audio file format that apple uses. that's all i really know
downloading the music
doubledouble.top is a life saver. you can download from a variety of services including but not limited to apple music, spotify, soundcloud, tidal, deezer, etc.
i'd recommend ripping your music from tidal or apple music since they're the best quality (i think apple music gives you lossless audio anyway. .m4a can be both lossy and lossless, but from the text on doubledouble i assume they're ripping HQ files off apple music)
i also love love love cobalt.tools for ripping audio/video from youtube (they support a lot of other platforms too!)
of course, many artists have their music on bandcamp — purchase or download directly from them if you can. bandcamp offers a variety of file formats for download
file conversion
if you're downloading from apple music with doubledouble, it spits out an .m4a file.
.m4a is ok for some people but if you prefer .flac, you may wanna convert it. ffmpeg is a CLI (terminal) tool to help with media conversion
if you're on linux or macOS, you can use parameter expansion to batch convert all files in a folder. put the files in one place first, then with your terminal, cd into the directory and run:
for i in *.m4a; do ffmpeg -i "$i" "${i%.*}.flac"; done
this converts from .m4a to .flac — change the file extensions if needed.
soulseek
another way to get music is through soulseek. soulseek is a peer-to-peer file sharing network which is mainly used for music. nicotine+ is a pretty intuitive (and open-source) client if you don't like the official one.
you can probably find a better tutorial on soulseek somewhere else. just wanted to make this option known
it's bad etiquette to download from people without sharing files of your own, so make sure you've got something shared. also try to avoid queuing up more than 1-2 albums from one person in a row
tagging & organizing your music
tagging: adding metadata to a music file (eg. song name, artist name, album) that music players can recognize and display
if you've ripped music from a streaming platform, chances are it's already tagged. i've gotten files with slightly incorrect tags from doubledouble though, so if you care about that then you might wanna look into it
i use musicbrainz picard for my tagging. they've got pretty extensive documentation, which will probably be more useful than me
basically, you can look up album data from an online database into the program, and then match each track with its file. the program will tag each file correctly for you (there's also options for renaming the file according to a certain structure if you're into that!)
there's also beets, which is a CLI tool for... a lot of music collection management stuff. i haven't really used it myself, but if you feel up to it then they've got extensive documentation too. for most people, though, it's not really a necessity
how you wanna organize your music is completely up to you. my preferred filestructure is:
artist > album > track # track
Tumblr media
using a music player
the options for this are pretty expansive. commonly used players i see include VLC, foobar2000, clementine (or a fork of it called strawberry), and cmus (for the terminal)
you can also totally use iTunes or something. i don't know what audio players other systems come with
i personally use dopamine. it's a little bit slow, but it's got a nice UI and is themeable plus has last.fm support (!!!)
don't let the github page fool you, you don't have to build from source. you can find the releases here
click the "assets" dropdown on the most recent release, and download whichever one is compatible with your OS
syncing
if you're fine with your files just being on one device (perhaps your computer, but perhaps also an USB drive or an mp3 player), you don't have to do this
you can sync with something like google drive, but i hate google more than i hate spotify
you can get a free nextcloud account from one of their providers with 2GB of free storage. you can use webDAV to access your files from an app on your phone or other device (documents by readdle has webDAV support, which is what i use)
disroot and blahaj.land are a couple providers i know that offer other services as well as nextcloud (so you get more with your account), but accounts are manually approved. do give them a look though!!
if you're tech-savvy and have an unused machine lying around, look into self-hosting your own nextcloud, or better yet, your own media server. i've heard that navidrome is a pretty good audio server. i unfortunately don't have experience with self-hosting at the moment so i have like zero advice to give here. yunohost seems to be a really easy way to manage a server
afterword
i don't know if any of this is helpful, but i just wanted to consolidate my personal advice in one place. fuck big tech. own your media, they could take it away from you at any moment

I worry about my friend sometimes. I mean we're both nerdy guys and aren't exactly big but even still he's very skinny. I mean he eats perfectly fine, he's very healthy and all that but he always remains just as skinny. He even said himself he's tried and wants to get bigger. Maybe I could help his with this BoGo offer thing.
Subject: Order #10108
Dear (REDACTED),
Thank you for your recent purchase from The Spiral, home for all your transformation needs! Your order #10108 has been received and is on its way as we speak. Your order includes:
(1) Thick_From_Thin(Nerd)
(1) Mystery(Self)
Expect delivery in 3-5 days.
Sincerely,
The Spiral
We knew you’d come around and round and round and round…
A few days later, an email came through from the Spiral. Included at the top was a photo. You hadn’t seen your friend in a few days, but even then you hardly believed it was the same guy:
Tumblr media
They went on to detail how they caught up with him while he was leaving work one evening, caught him completely by surprise, and tossed him in the back of their van, peeling off into the night. He was quickly stripped and had his hands and arms strapped down so that the processing could begin. They administered a pretty standard concoction of hormones, numbing agents, and accelerants mainly focusing on muscle growth. Of course, to keep up his rate of growth, he needed to be pumped with an almost constant stream of protein shakes. Each muscle swole larger and larger, forced to its limit through chemicals and pure calories. Not to worry though, any and all extra fat was carefully suctioned out to be saved for later purposes. He fought like a tiger the whole time, and towards the end of his processing he did manage to snap a strap and made a grab for a technician. So, apologies, but an additional service fee for a personality change will have to be added. A quick prick and his rage was quickly converted to exude cockiness and vanity. Do not worry, a full personality replacement was not selected, so your friend will have many of his same quirks and interests, with just a layer of ‘bro’ layered on top. Finally, we made a few minor mental adjustments, overwriting the last two years or so to line up his current state with his memories, and before an hour was up he was dropped on his front lawn, new gym bag with supplements in hand to ensure consistent, continuous growth.
You were pretty shocked by the results. But looking at his after pictures, damn. It was hard to argue with results. You doubt he would consider himself small now. Mostly, you were worried about how tough his transformation ended up being. Would yours be that severe?
You wouldn’t have to wait long to find out. As you scrolled on your phone that night, a video of a spiral came across my feed. You knew you should ignore it, but something about the visuals and audio made you want to keep watching. The loop was short, and a blast of color and text swam in my vision as you stared blankly ahead, letting it pull you deeper. It felt so nice to just zoooone ouuuut….
And then my phone was gone.
You glanced around. You were in a building you had never seen before, high ceilings and concrete floors. It was nearly empty besides two men stood over you, fiddling with some machine. One had slipped my phone into his pocket. You tried to protest, but the shorter man just said “Quiet” and you could no longer speak. You debated running, but he said “Wait” and your muscles froze in place.
“Thank goodness the last one gave us the excess we needed” the taller of the two mumbled as he placed a mask over your head, and connected it to a tube attached to the mysterious machine.
“Let’s see, really a dealer’s choice. Let’s go… 4’8”, 235, a bit of muscle, full beard…”
“Do you only do cubs?”
“Shut up, he’ll love whatever we do.”
You heard the machine click on and there was a sudden pressure in your mouth. The liquid the soon filled you was creamy and sweet, with just a little tang. You tried to spit it back out, but were quickly foiled. “Suck” was all they had to say, and your body complied. As you chugged the sweet liquid, you felt your muscles grow heavy. Your body was warm, belly full, and mind so sleeepppy…
And everything was black.
When you woke up, you couldn’t tell that anything was different. You were as you had always been: a sexy, self-obsessed cub. It was a few days later, while you were spending time worshiping yourself in the mirror, when you finally saw you had missed an email:
Subject: Order #10108 Fulfilled
Dear (REDACTED),
Your order has been fulfilled. We know you have many options, but thank you for supporting The Spiral.
Sincerely,
The Spiral
Tumblr media
A very late addition to the summer series, this one was, say, lost in transit somewhere in the drafts. Finally pushing it out for you all to enjoy. Thank you all for all the love on my first story back. I hope to post a bit more consistently for a bit to work through some backlogs.

Ways to consume Journey to the West (without needling to buy and read a full translation)!
I’ve noticed that a lot of people can’t read the book for a lot of different reasons, so I’ve compiled a couple of my favourite ways of consume the story while bypassing these problems, categorized by the various issues I’ve come across.
Note that this is mainly for English speakers, as that’s the language I default to for translations.
The book is too inaccessible/expensive for me to obtain physically
Journey to the West Research has an entire blog post dedicated to compiling free PDF versions of the book. This includes many languages, not just English.
I struggle with reading text in that quantity
There are abridged versions of the story, my personal favourite is the one by Julie Lovell—it’s approximately a quarter of the original story’s length, and mainly focuses on the most iconic chapters. These versions are also typically more easily found in local bookstores.
I struggle with reading novels in general
The story has been converted into audio form! Here are the ones off the top of my head, each listed with their own pros and cons:
Journey to the West: An Audio Drama Series is an original translation told in a read-aloud format, in which the host, Lin, acts as a kindly librarian reading to a group of awaiting 1st graders. She gives every character a distinct voice and personality, and she’s obviously delighted to be able to share her culture with the listeners. The show used to have free translation notes, where Lin gets to act as a disgruntled translator going on about the intricacies of the Chinese language and historical/mythological contexts, but these now require a subscription to access. This show is the reason why I know how to pronounce these characters’ names.
Legends Summarized: The Journey to the West by Overly Sarcastic Productions is one that I’m sure I don’t need to include (because of how widespread it is) but feel I should because someone is gonna mention is anyways. It’s a very summarized, very sarcastic retelling of Red’s favourite chapters in the book, accompanied by fun visuals and the excitement of someone who clearly knows and loves what they’re talking about. As Red has said herself, this series should not be your only source of JTTW knowledge, as she simplifies it a ton to make it more digestible. Great for people who are just getting into the story and want a general overview, not great for people who want a more in-depth understanding of the themes and other complexities.
Journey of the Monkey King is a podcast akin to a longform, more in depth version of the OSP series. It consists of two Irish comedians discussing one chapter per episode; one of them (Caoimhe) has read the book, the other (MJ) hasn’t. The format is mainly Caoimhe giving a comedic abridged version of the chapter while MJ gawks in horror at whatever absurdity the Monster-of-the-Week presents. Because it’s hosted by Irish people, there isn’t much cultural context given, and some names are butchered, however I do find this one a lot easier to follow in comparison to the Audio Drama Series, and it’s far more detailed than Legends Summarized.
Journey to the West English Amateur Audiobook is one that is on my radar but have not started. To my current knowledge, it is an audiobook version of the WJF Jenner translation, which is notable to me because most of these types of podcasts are derived from the Anthony C Yu translation, so this one would be a nice listen to compare how the two went about handling the text.
Please know that this post isn’t intended to shame anyone into consuming the story; it’s not for everyone! But I’ve come across my fair share of aspiring fans who couldn’t access the book in a way that suited them (including myself) so I wanted to make this knowledge more generally know for anyone else who might need it :]

*a visage of her speaks*
I’ve…. I’ve waited for so, so long for you to come back…
"Do you think you can fool me with these cheap imitations? If someone truly loves another, they can tell when they are being lied to and played with by the world around them." She scoffs. "Don't waste my time. I have a job to do."
