For those of you unfamiliar with Invisible Sun, it's an rpg where every single player is a spell caster of some variety, each with their own unique way of interacting with magic.

The Vances are the most traditional spellcasters, but they eschew spell lists in favor of literally filling a grid with spell cards, representing their limited cognitive space being taken up by spells. They get more space, and literally bigger spells as you progress.

Weavers take two concepts and combine them to produce an effect, very much like Ars Magica or Mage: The Ascension, if you're familiar with those. They get the ability to combine more concepts together, and to have mastery over more concepts as they progress.

Makers are this game's artificer, and they have a robust system for making quirky magic items that have fun, interesting, unique side effects or downsides every time you use them. Their progression is the most straight forward by the numbers "the things you make are more powerful and you're better at making them" of the bunch, but the system lets you, for instance, make a gun out of the body of a dead(?) god, so I'll give this a pass.

Lastly, there are the Goetics, who summon and bind otherworldly creatures to their wills. This takes the form of a conversation and negotiation with your GM over what you have to do for your bound creature, and what exactly they do for you in exchange. If you've ever played a warlock and felt like patrons weren't a big enough deal, this is an entire "class" that lets those relationships (yes, plural) take center stage.

The entire system feels very much like Cypher system 2.0, with a d10 dice pool system with a straight forward level of difficulty to hit, very much like the levels of difficulty in base cypher system, just made easier to manage. It even uses the "I'm an Adjective Noun who Verbs" character structure from Cypher system, here made much more interesting by the addition of a funky little xp system.

Invisible Sun has one of the most interesting advancement systems I've ever seen: aside from normal, average, "you do a thing, you get xp" system, here called "Acumen" (used to increase your stats and skills) there is a separate xp system related to good and bad things happening to your character, called "Joy" and "Despair" respectively. You combine one Joy with one Despair to get a "Crux" which is the xp currency you need to advance your class and focus abilities. This incentivizes players to not only let bad things happen to them, but to SEEK THEM OUT, which is huge! Players often think they want to win all the time, but they don't actually want that, it makes for a boring narrative. This is one of the very few systems I've seen incentivize this story structure, and I'm absolutely in love with it.

Lastly, because the game focuses so heavily on Magic, it has the only system for simulating the ebbs and flows of magic I've seen done well! This involves "The Path of Suns" and the "Sooth deck" which is the in game name for a specific pattern of laying out what amounts to tarot cards that make magic dynamic, interesting, and unpredictable in a way I've never seen before, and rarely since. (Pathfinder's Secrets of Magic is the only other supplement I can think of, and that was almost 5 years after this game came out)

Anyway, I can't recommend this game enough, the systems are unique, the vibes are immaculate, and it's so fuckin WEIRD in the best way.

Minimum Knowledge Required to Use GAM3

Someone who I have some faith in recently asked about using GAM3, Tinydark's proprietary game engine, to make a game similar to Marosia with elements of Flight Rising. I'm still in stealth mode but I thought I'd offer a license, and endeavor to get them an installation running some time in December.

GAM3 is a no-code piece of software. The pitch for GAM3 is the same it was in 2013: you shouldn't need to be a programmer to make a game. Eleven years later(!), that has never been more true. But in order to achieve the flexibility required to build complex games, I have had to make features which closely resemble programming.

Here's a screenshot from the most complex thing GAM3's ever made, URPG's battle system. This is the skill Mighty Leap and what follows after this event is played, is a ton of logic smartly injected (and cached) to account for all the features that URPG's alpha combat requires.

Most events aren't nearly this complex, but if you look closely you'll see a lotta code-lookin' things. This isn't a tutorial -- that will come in 2025 -- so I'll leave it at that and proceed with detailing the minimum knowledge you'll need for a comfortable GAM3 development experience.

Programming 101

You should understand the concept of variables, conditionals such as if statements, and how to use functions. Any functions available to PHP are available to use, but there are restrictions on any functions that could be security issues.

In this (nonsensical) example, we say: if the player chose choice #2, set the variable [$foo] to the number of swords they have * 2. Next, we increase their dexterity by whatever that amount: if they have 3 swords, +6 dexterity xp.

Styling With CSS

Websites are styled with CSS. Each game has its own stylesheet for overrides. We're still working on making everything perfectly flexible, but you're able to customize/override anything with CSS and most colors are based in configurable variables. Right-click on anything in the game and select Inspect Element to try changing a few properties and see what happens. :}

The layout itself is configurable through CSS grid. That's a big topic, but chances are you'll be able to figure out how to move things around easily.

Regardless, rest assured Tinydark is here for a minimal (or perhaps more) level of support should you need some styling help.

Game Design

Gasp! Yes. Game design is a real discipline. Here are a few resources I recommend.

Game Design Vocabulary -- I never got to read Naomi's part, but it's a good primer.

Extra Credits -- I was thrown for a loop when I tried to find the link to EC and it turns out they rebranded the channel as Extra History. You'll have to scroll down to find the Extra Credits episodes. They were formative for me as a younger designer.

Lost Garden -- A great general resource; Dan Cook is a brilliant designer and I have a lot of respect for him and Spry Fox. I recommend looking through his posts to find any that catch your eye.

Otherwise, it's hard to say what got me to the point of confidence I have now. I've failed a lot. I've read a lot of post-mortems. I've written a lot. I'm happy to provide feedback and guidance on the design of your game as well as talk about GAM3's strengths and weaknesses.

Finally, you'll really want to learn how to write a Game Design Doc. It is absolutely critical that you get your thoughts all out on paper and get settled on design pillars, as well as how to pivot out of them and determine the risks for your game/design.

so i played the astlibra demo and its tutorial beat of introducing the leveling system and then several rooms later introducing the second completely unrelated leveling system is extremely funny

(one is xp-based point allocation, the other is a sphere grid based on 6 different flavors of mob drops. the former only gives you stat boosts, the latter gives you stat boosts and unlocks magic spells)

also you get all your skills (and also some spells) from maxing out your equipments' xp gauges, and of course the tree branch not-a-weapon you start the game with requires like 50x the experience as anything else to unlock its skill, so, who knows what that'll be. you start the game with a double-jump. there's a stat that i think only improves the size of your oxygen gauge.

also there's a complicated mob drop gacha system where you need keys to unlock mob drop chests, except there's no way to get the high-tier keys at the beginning of the game so so much for that plat chest i got once. there's an item synthesis/cooking system that also gives you points for the sphere grid system

overall i found the demo pretty fun, though the boss fight got kind of repetitive; i got the feeling i was expected to actually grind a little for materials so i'd be higher-level when actually fighting the boss. the libra mechanic isn't really used at all in the demo since you only get it at the end but it could be interesting

Lately I’ve been obsessively playing Sims 4. I have a habit of ignoring it for months, then binge playing in a week. Especially if a new expansion pack comes out. I just got University and it’s... kinda meh so far. But I think I’m just in the wrong mood for it. A few years ago when I was all nostalgic for uni I’d have eaten it up, I think. Maybe I’ll be feeling it more another time. Am happy to finally have in-the-wall showers though! That alone was worth $40, lmao.

Another thing to factor in... when I sent my Sim to the university, they asked me to pick my course load and I gave her 3 classes plus an elective. Almost gave her four, but then was like, “I should wait till I know how much free time she’ll have.” So... when I was in college, I maxed out on course credits every semester and then took electives for 0 credits on top of that. It was hard - especially junior year - but I did it. I really wasn’t expecting my Sim to struggle with just 4 classes, but I failed to take into account how rapidly Sims get tired. They can’t pull all-nighters the same way I could when I was 20, lol. And things like eating and going to the toilet take an hour lol. My Sim’s always late to class because even though she has a bicycle, half the time she just doesn’t use it, and the other half she’s prompted to leave for class too late to make it on time. I started just putting her in front of the building once I knew where her classes were held xP

So, that is, I think I made going to uni unnecessarily difficult for my Sim, and therefore made it less fun for me. She spends all her time in class, studying, or doing homework - there’s no time at all for anything else. I feel burnt out and I’m not even a student anymore x’D

Also her clingy boyfriend who’s supposed to be freelancing at their apartment in San Myshuno keeps randomly popping up or begging her for dates. The first day alone he showed up and sent four different invites. Like, omg, dude. Chill - he has none. He has both the Romantic and the Jealous trait though so I guess he can’t help it. He was an NPC that happened to take my fancy so I snagged him. I like him for the most part but boy is he an annoying boyfriend!

OK, but the real reason I started obsessing over Sims again wasn’t for University, but for Realms of Magic. I love the magic packs in the Sims and was hoping for something Harry Potter-esque. It’s... well, it’s okay. The world is kind of pretty, but not very interactive, and the magic-user Sims who show up there are all really normal looking. At least the three Sages are more interesting but... they show up at my spellcaster Sim’s house in Sulani to do normal things, dressed in ridiculous yet normal outfits (at least that makes them seem like wizards trying and failing to pass as muggles though, lol).

But yeah, I was hoping for more. I reached Virtuoso really fast. Dueling was mostly the same graphics every time. There was nothing I could do to improve my chances of winning, like learn a specific powerful spell or potion... Even leveling up doesn’t really help - what helps is getting enough Talent points to buy a spellcaster perk that gives you an advantage in duels. But that just means leveling up and leveling up and leveling up. So you do the same three or four interactions over and over again. Even potion making was a bust because they give you free samples of the potions when you learn them, and then you can use the duplication spell on them, and then you can get the perk that ensures they’ll be successful, so... why even bother making them!

Mostly what I would have liked is a much larger range of spells. Especially practical ones. The spell my Virtuoso level spellcaster uses the most? Scruberoo. So no one in his household ever needs to take showers, lol. But Scruberoo doesn’t work on laundry :/ They are using a washtub because they’re semi-off-the-grid so it’d be a nice way to speed things up. But sometimes the washtub glitches or something? and doesn’t result in clean clothes even if the water had been replaced first. In that case, I let my spellcaster Zipzap the thing lol. Because it makes me happy.

I also wish spells could be extended. Like, my Sim has a big garden, so when I want to use Floralial, I have to individually select each plant, pick magic, pick spells, and then pick Floralial... it’s dull.

All that being said... I still enjoy Realms of Magic. Since making my sim a Spellcaster, I’ve played him a lot. I love Practical Magic. I love that after making my Sim’s cat his familiar, she now sparkles as she prances around :D I find it charming that I can make a cauldron-full of chili out of thin air. (Now I know how the Weasleys kept themselves fed.) I love the new magical decor (clothing is so-so). The other magic seems fun but since my Sim is a good guy, I don’t get to use them much. Sims in Sulani sometimes just show up in your house and make themselves at home, and one time a guy got stuck in a pathfinding mishap, so to get him out I had my Spellcaster Morphiate him into a dead fish or something. But then I couldn’t move the dead fish... Somehow when he returned to normal, he was able to get out of the house though. Anyway, I’m planning to make an evil spellcaster so I can go around gleefully Inferniating everyone.

But the best part of all is Transportalate or whatever it’s called. I know with cheats you can just click and teleport, but he does this on his own, sometimes over stupidly small distances, and it comes with cool lighting effects. Me gusta. I love knowing that if his bladder bar’s in the red, he won’t pee himself on his way to the toilet because he’ll get there instantaneously, not in 15 Sim minutes X’D Am just wishing I could give this ability to my Nightcrawler Sim without making him a spellcaster.

My spellcaster is my Fai Sim, btw. =D And Mokona is his familiar (a white cat). The looks on Syaoran, Sakura, and Kurogane’s faces when he Scruberoos them all are priceless. (I’d use the Delicioso spell more too but Fai has level 10 in Cooking, Baking, and Gourmet Cooking X’D)

After 6 months of traveling, meeting amazing people, discovering the beautiful U.S. while working remotely, our journey is taking us to new horizons; we are ready to pass on our Airstream to wanderer adventurers.

This Airstream has been a fantastic platform for our adventure.

What we did:

Some state parks campgrounds and a few private ones in the few locations where we had to.

The Airstream 23FB is spacious, comfortable, luxurious, yet nimble enough to handle the rough trails and dirt roads you’ll want to explore on public lands (we got to access the remotest areas).

Off-grid ready with great autonomy:

New solar power system, fully integrated charger inverter, lithium batteries and the extra Honda propane inverter generator. Since September we never came close to running out of power, even during the cold days and nights when we had to run our heater constantly.

39 gallons of fresh water. Cooking, cleaning, showers,…

2 x 30lb of propane for heating, fridge, cooking and safety propane generator.

With full tanks, propane and water, even in temperatures going as low as 25F at night we were able to be off-grid for 10 days straight with no problem. Navy showers included.

Our trailer got a little bruised up in 2016 (2 owners ago). That’s how it earned its salvaged title from the state of California. It’s had no consequences for us. The trailer is really cool and its distinctive looks and charm will be a conversation starter with fellow adventurers. It looks great. Comes at a price point that would buy you half an Airstream without a solid solar, battery and inverter system.

Two axles. We think it matters. You don’t want to be stranded on that rough patch of desert dirt road or have your trailer go haywire on a busy highway (welcome to LA).

We pulled our Airstream with a 2015 VW Touareg diesel. Perfect all around. The car is very comfortable and quiet. It packs all the torque and power you need. Combined with our weight balancing and sway control hitch, pulling the 23FB Airstream was always very safe and the driving experience great.

We traveled throughout the west and averaged 20mpg when pulling the trailer-and 30mpg without.

Current Registration

The trailer is registered in Montana under an LLC. This set-up will save you money and is perfect for you especially if your intention is to be a full-time traveler with no fixed address. We’ll tell you all about it.

Avoiding Condensation And Moisture Buildup In Your Van

When cold weather starts to roll around, condensation quickly becomes a major headache for vandwellers. Whether you’re spending the night in a van, RV or camper the pitfalls of condensation are the same. Moisture buildup can cause dampness, mold and even rust leading to an uncomfortable experience. How do you get rid of all of this water vapor? Keep reading for tips on prevention and evaporation techniques!

Condensation, Humidity, and Dew Point

Condensation occurs when vapor within the air transforms into liquid. When an object is cooler than the dew point temperature, condensation builds up on the surface.

Relative humidity levels fluctuate frequently because warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air. Cooking, running a heater, and even breathing will release water vapor, increasing relative humidity.

Dew point is the measure of actual moisture in the air. When the dew point reaches 100%, water can no longer evaporate and liquid forms.

Where Condensation Forms

Naturally, all air contains water molecules. In addition, your body is constantly releasing water vapor. The heat from your skin and breath gives off moisture into the air. Running a heater, cooking or moving around will off gas huge amounts of vapor. In an enclosed space like a van, this builds up fast!

Add these activities to the increasing temperature of your living space, and the air will quickly become warmer and more humid. When there is a large temperature difference between the cold outdoors, and a warm humid van interior, condensation will form on the cold surfaces.

The most noticeable condensation will appear on your windows, it can also form on your roof or walls if not properly sealed. When lots of condensation occurs, droplets can stick together and create wet spots that quickly lead to mold or rust if not treated.

How to Prevent Condensation

The best and most effective way to reduce condensation is through proper ventilation. It is necessary to have a constant airflow throughout the van bringing cooler, drier air in and pushing humid air out. This is especially true when adding an excess amount of moisture to the air during activities such as cooking or running a heater.

Cracking open some windows might not sound like a very comfortable idea in the winter; but secondary solutions such as dehumidifiers and moisture absorbers will simply not be successful. A van is a very tiny space and humidity needs somewhere to go.

Adding Airflow To Your Van

Having two ventilation openings in your vehicle should be the goal. Ideally, these would be placed far apart from each other so the air gets a chance to circulate throughout the van. Adding a vent fan to the ceiling that can run for an extended period of time along with a cracked window is a great solution to mitigating moisture.

Opening a window by itself will do a pretty good job of ridding your van of some condensation, but without the circulating airflow you can’t be confident that you are getting rid of the humidity before it has the chance to condense.

Installing a 12V vent fan in your ceiling is not nearly as difficult as it sounds. The most daunting part of the process is going to involve cutting a large hole in the roof. Proper airflow can be a godsend during the hot summer days and equally enjoyable throughout the winter.

As an alternative, purchasing a small battery operated or DC powered fan to place in an open window will also have a positive effect on mitigating condensation. This will require you to remember to set it up each night before bed or during high levels of activity, but is still a good solution.

Fight Condensation With Dry-Heat

This will certainly not work for everyone, but depending on your goals you may choose to install a wood stove to heat your van in the cold weather. Wood stoves are highly cost effective and suck moisture out of the air. In fact, wood stoves are SO effective you may even need to add some moisture back into the air by leaving out a cup or two of water.

Externally Ventilated Air Heaters

If you have the budget, externally ventilated heaters are perhaps the best way to stay warm in the winter. The three most popular models are the Propex propane heater, and the Espar and Webasto diesel heaters.

These heaters use fuel from large tanks to keep the van warm then pump both humidity and combustable gasses out the air exhaust.

Air heaters have the huge advantage of producing significantly less water vapor than other heating options. And because they are vented to the outside, you can keep your windows closed! This leads to an all-around more comfortable experience.

Adding A Vapor Barrier

Vapor barriers can be a little confusing. They are very effective at preventing condensation when installed correctly. However, it is nearly impossible to do this in the context of a van so ventilation will still be required.

Although it sounds counter-intuitive, a vapor barrier should be placed on the warm side of your insulation. This is because an effective vapor barrier will prevent the humid air inside your van from reaching the cold material (metal) of your van walls and building condensation. If a vapor barrier is placed directly up against the van wall, moisture can still form in the insulation of your walls unless they are completely sealed.

A vapor barrier can be the best way to prevent condensation, but installing it correctly can be a major challenge. Luckily, Polyiso, XPS, yellow spray foam and Thinsulate insulation all act as vapor barriers. These materials do not absorb water. However, if they are not attached edge-to-edge with other moisture resistant materials, condensation can move behind them to the metal and form rust or mold. This is often worse than no barrier at all because the mold is in a stagnant environment and can grow faster. Not many vandwellers create a proper vapor barrier because it is difficult to attend to all of the edges, curves, corners, and holes in a van. It is also something that isn’t as easy to get right on your first build. In a perfect world, it is the best solution for a durable and healthy environment. Something simple like a box truck with one door would be the most feasible to seal off. If you have time to learn and plan a vapor barrier it is an option to look into.

Dehumidifiers and Absorbent Solutions

When fighting condensation for the first time, a dehumidifier or quick-fix moisture absorber might be the first thing that comes to mind. Unfortunately, neither of these are going to work very well in a van setting. Dehumidifiers require a constant source of electricity which is a precious resource for someone living on the road. Any dehumidifier capable of pulling enough moisture out of the air in a van will also have to be quite large and this is not very with an off-grid electrical system.

Moisture absorbers carry some of the same consequences. In order to soak up the amount of condensation a human can produce in a van (not to mention a heater), one would need a very large supply of absorbers. These methods have been tried by countless vandwellers with little success.

Dangers of Condensation

You do not want to let condensation build up in your van. This is a problem best solved during the construction stage of your van building journey. Excess moisture can quickly turn into mold and become dangerous to your health. Exposure to mold can cause skin, eye, and throat irritation. Even a small amount of untreated moisture can create rust, leading to corrosion. This is a vicious cycle that’s easier to prevent than to repair.

Maintaining proper airflow is the best way to avoid condensation. You will be living in a much more comfortable environment with constant air-exchange. Be sure to seal up all walls and ceilings correctly. When all else fails, open the windows!

Intro to Farming in BDO

Fences

There are 3 kinds of fences you can rent. 

Small Fence – 3 CP (4 spots)

Plain Fence – 6 CP (7 spots)

Strong Fence – 10 CP (10 spots)

You can easily find an NPC to rent fences from by going to NPC and typing in “Fence”. It will list all npc’s that sell a fence, and which kind of fence they sell.

Important: Try and find a place near a storage manager. Once you rent once from an NPC, you have to store or place your fence before you can rent from the same NPC (in other words, you can’t have the fence in your inventory when you try to get another).

When you place a fence, it may seem like it has additional spots in the grid. I’m not sure what function it serves, but you can’t actually put one crop in each box within the fence grid. For example, the Plain Fence may have 10 spots, but you can only place 7 crops in that area.

Right click your fence to place it, and make sure most of the fence is in a blue spot. You can only place fences on grass, and they can’t be placed inside a safe zone.

Fertilizer

This is an optional item that can decrease the amount of time a crop takes to grow.

Inorganic Fertilizer – Boosts crops by appx 50%

Dry x5 of one of the following: Wheat/Barley/Corn/Potato/Sweet Potato

Fertilizer Byproduct – Boosts crops by 65%

Shake Inorganic Fertilizer x3 with Fermenter x2. Fermenter can be purchased from a cook NPC

Organic Fertilizer – Boosts crops 85%

Shake Fertilizer Byproduct x 1 and Distilled Water x 2. To get Distilled Water, Heat Bottles of River Water.

Water Level

If you run out of water that your fence can access, use Purified Water (Use Thinning on Bottles of River Water) to fill up the reservoir.

Workers

For a truly afk farming experience, you can set up a worker to tend to your fence. You can have one worker per fence, and they will tend to your crops until they run out of energy. You will not gain farming experience by only gathering your crops, but as far as I can tell, farming level only affects how much energy is used when tending crops. For now you don’t need to worry about leveling Farming.

Seeds

You can obtain seeds from seed vendors (low quality seeds are only available from npcs), randomly gathering them, or buying them from the market place. I started out with 3 Special Sunflower Seeds and cross bred them until I had enough to fill two Plain Fences.  Most seeds will only take one spot, however some may take more.

Haystacks

You can obtain Haystacks by Drying 50 weeds. This will give you low quality haystacks. In order to get High Quality or Special Haystacks, you will have to cross breed the low quality one until they give you the quality you desire. You can also buy it off the marketplace.

Haystacks are what you use to “farm” cows. The amount you obtain varies. Sometimes I will get 40 milk per cow, others I’ll get 80. Currently I only farm 2 cows. One is used to cross-breed for more haystacks, the other is collected. Please note that Haystacks will take 4 spots.

Cross-Breeding

You can technically obtain a lifetime’s supply of a seed just from cross-breeding when the crop hits 100% or more. It can drop between 1-3 seeds. Cross-breeding is the only way to obtain farming by-products, which are used in T9 horse awakening (or obtaining Farming xp, seeds, fertilizer, and CP).

Harvesting

Harvest is the command to harvest your plant. It’s best if you collect as close to 100% as possible, as the longer you wait, the less amount of crops you will collect.
