"The search has intensified for alternative energy-saving technologies for heating and cooling that don’t run on fossil fuels.

Now, by mimicking a desert-dwelling chameleon, Chinese scientists have developed a cheap energy-efficient, cost-effective coating on houses.

They say the new material could keep buildings cool in the summer or warm in the winter without using additional energy.

“Many desert creatures have specialized adaptations to allow them to survive in harsh environments with large daily temperature shifts,” said Dr. Fuqiang Wang, author on the paper describing the invention and researcher at the Harbin Institute of Technology. “For example, the Namaqua chameleon of southwestern Africa alters its color to regulate its body temperature as conditions change.”

Inspired by the Namaqua chameleon, Dr. Wang and his colleagues wanted to create a color-shifting coating that adapts as outside temperatures fluctuate...

When heated to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, the surface began to change from dark to light grey. Once it reached 86F, the light-colored film reflected up to 93% of solar radiation.

“Even when heated above 175 degrees Fahrenheit for an entire day, the material showed no signs of damage,” reported Dr. Wang.

The team then tested it alongside three conventional coatings—regular white paint, a passive radiative cooling paint, and blue steel tiles in outdoor tests on doghouse-sized buildings throughout all four seasons...

In summer, the new coating was significantly cooler than the white paint and steel tiles, according to the findings published in the journal Nano Letters.

“During spring and fall, the new coating was the only system that could adapt to the widely fluctuating temperature changes, switching from heating to cooling throughout the day,” Dr. Wang added.

The researchers say that the color-changing system could save a “considerable” amount of energy for regions that experience multiple seasons, while still being inexpensive and easy to manufacture."

After the product is scanned, we return to one shot and the cashier is counting his money. It then switches to show the pepsi delivery driver being handed the wad of money while delivering the stores supplies. This part of the video features many rapid transitions. The first transition is to the pepsi driver using a money counting machine to count his money, then we see many rapid cuts that interchange close up shots of the “100” on hundred dollar bills and images of stock market prices rising and falling, likely representative of that money changing between economies and countries.

It then transitions to a businessman counting money, which he places in a briefcase and leaves his office. He presents the briefcase to a colleague, which transitions as the case is opened to the colleague opening the case to show a weapons manufacturer. The weapons manufacturer then begins building with a variety of hammering, sawing, and ends with spray painting. He then presents his creation: a bomb. The person being presented to comments that it’s perfect.

It cuts to a plane flying through the rain on a darkened night, to which someone says to the pilot “do you have eyes on the target?”

The pilot responds “yes, i have visuals.”

The pilot then says “Sir, are you sure about the coordinates? I see civilians nearby.”

The camera then pans to a little girl, looking between 10 and 13, walking with an older man, either her brother or father. He is trailing behind her, and as she turns to look at him, she also looks up to see the plane.

While she is looking at the plane, an audio overlay of the pilot being told “do it.”

The shot then shows a close up of the bomb being dropped and it’s trajectory through the air, as it gets closer and closer to the ground. As we reach the ground, the camera actually zooms in on the innocent child’s eye, the tip of the bomb still in frame and clearly about to land on her face.

The moment in time freezes as the older man hugs her tightly, and she stares at the bomb. The shot cuts between a full body of her being embraced, the man hugging her with his back attempting to shield her from the bomb, and her face close up, staring at it. The moment in time resumes in extreme slow motion, as a pulsating ring is heard getting louder and louder as the nose of the bomb gets closer to impact. Right before the bomb lands, the screen cuts to black, with white text saying “Boycott.”

as requested by one of my followers, i come with some body-and-mind-based sundowner headcanons! (again, i am not an expert at this, as i haven't reached the sundowner fight yet or an expert in whatever i discuss! i might be completely wrong in some cases!)

1. sundowner was definitely in new york during 9/11. wild start, right? well, think about it. he's been in the iraq war and afghanistan when he was still in the military, obviously due to america's war against terrorism. hell, he's a die-hard war fan! (sundowner quote to back this up: "business ain't been the same since they shut down SOP. "a clean break from the war economy." well some of us liked that economy. how's an honest warmonger supposed to make a living?") he's all about war since he claims through words and actions that war is the only thing that pleases him anymore, and this terrorist attack pushed him even further to his obsession with full-out war. if he wasn't there when the twin towers fell, he has at least watched it on the news and got all excited about it.

2. sundowner has always been bald (or on the verge of it. always. of course he's bald with a codename like sundowner. he's destined to have instant hair loss. even in his childhood and before he was a cyborg, he's either had a buzzcut or eternally bald from when he was just a baby. besides getting his name from the blood on his blades looking like a sunset, he only names himself sundowner just because he wants the sun to not shine on his bald head!

2.5. irrelevant headcanon that i made just because i want to make fun of sundowner: despite being bald all the time, he does have peach fuzz. he's no hair but all fuzzy. no top, all bottom! i'm getting off topic now.

3. sundowner is heavily based off of a shogun, or samurai leader. obvious, right? shoguns are powerful leaders from feudal japan with mass control over land and armies. who else also has that power? sundowner, of course! even though he doesn't have the slightest clue of what a japan even is, he does share many qualities with a shogun, like powerful military and territorial control, as he is the leader of desperado after all. what's even cooler is that he's supposed to be a heavily armed samurai, like mentioned in the concept book of metal gear rising!

4. sundowner's QR-code is actually scannable and it leads to a website. i wouldn't put a code on my forehead for no reason, and i wouldn't put sundowner as a guy who just has a code on his head for literally no reason. i actually have two theories as to what the code leads to...:

it leads to the manufacturer of the cybernetic parts sundowner uses' website for a free promotion (and even just an advertisement for the curious folks, really).

it leads to a youtube video, specifically a rickroll or another meme song to insert his dominance over others.

obviously, it could be so much more than just those two, but c'mon, if the codes were blank, that'd be an entire endless trolling opportunity wasted!

5. sundowner's machetes can be at least 111 degrees fahrenheit (about 44 degrees celsius) but could be at most 550 degrees fahrenheit (about 288 degrees celsius). oh wow, finally some actual science? well, not really. remember sundowners introductory scene, where he killed the two guards and kidnapped n'mani? remember the second guy he killed, where he cut his entire head off? this is where the theory about the burning blades kicks in. in the cutscene, there's a distinct sizzling sound from where he's cutting the guy's head as a trail of steam or smoke came off of where said cut was. this is proof that sundowner is actually cauterizing (the act of burning someone's wounds with a very hot tool) the poor guy while he's already getting his head cut off!

with such facts, it can be assumed that his machetes are as hot as the sun.

6. sundowner hasn't grown up from his childhood (yet). i know this is a low blow, but what if he was taught to love war by his parents, specifically his father or another male adult figure in the family? what if he was bullied by the kids at his school because of his average grades in school and his family's financial status hindering him to have such fancy toys as the others? what if he was actually the bully at school? as he says right before his intense battle against raiden...:

7. another biased one, as always: surprisingly, unlike monsoon, sundowner could've be saved, but there's a low chance of that ever happening. consider his struggles against monsoon when they were both young. sundowner has been in more wars, but hasn't experienced as much stuff as monsoon in my opinion. sure he may be the leader of desperado, but that's because of how tough and strong he is compared to the others. at his fight with raiden, it's well established that the others have been killed off (rip misty and monsoony), and that only he's left. sure, he may have sam, but sam was recruited only because of monsoon. he's alone against jack and he knows this. but... this does give him an opportunity to live, albeit a small one. "either step down from desperado or die" could've been proposed, but one; raiden's a cold-blooded killer, and two; sundowner will very likely make up his own terrorist group again... but imagine the possibilities...

about 11 hours later and this post being wiped out once after i was almost done with it, i'm finally finished! this was surprisingly more entertaining and fun than what i expected. maybe sundowner isn't that scary of a guy after all...

Foreign Matter

It is no secret that my favorite grocery store is Trader Joe’s. Sure, Whole Foods comes in a close second, but TJ’s is just my vibe. I love the laid back atmosphere, free of pretense and full of happy, adventurous shopping. They’re keen to keep bringing in foods and spices that most other groceries would never touch.

Unfortunately, we will probably never have one here in Amarillo. While they continue to add new stores (there are currently 564 stores in 43 states), they have their standards, tending to open in educated, upper-middle-class neighborhoods. We just don’t have enough people here who fit that demo.

So, whenever I travel, I go prepared with a huge cooler and a stack of Trader Joe’s reusable shopping bags. If Dallas, Albuquerque, or Oklahoma City are on my return trip, then I stop for a major shopping expedition. Believe me, I am not the only one. Many TJ’s fans who live in places that will never have one are just like me, and TJ’s knows it. Why add too many stores when people are willing to go to this extreme just to patronize you?

Trader Joe’s has been around since 1967 in Pasadena California. It was purchased by Aldi Nord (“North”) in 1979. And if you recognize that name, you should. It’s just that the Aldi stores we see in the US (which admittedly have many similarities, but different price points and target market) are owned by Aldi Sud (“South”). Both are German companies, and were once one big company until a rift developed between the brothers who owned it. They split into two at that point, so at best we can say that TJ’s and Aldi are cousins.

Given my love affair with TJ’s, it should come as no surprise that I have been known to include them in essay exam questions (wink wink, nudge nudge), incorporating their very cool podcast and other materials. This is a company that does exceptionally little advertising, adamantly refuses to allow online shopping, and will never have self-check lanes. It’s all about the shopping experience, and for this marketing prof, a company that is rich with marketing lessons.

But all has not been well with TJ’s this summer, because they have suffered through five product recalls. And they are odd ones, ranging from items that “may contain” rocks, insects, and metal. Ouch. Once that kind of news hits the airwaves and social media, it can become a public relations nightmare.

Roughly 85% of TJ’s items are private-label goods, meaning they are manufactured and packaged under contract by a different company. TJ’s doesn’t make anything; they just authorize its manufacture and labeling. It’s a challenge to find other-branded items in the store outside of the beer and wine section. It is these external providers who are the ones with quality control issues.

And yet TJ’s bears the brunt of the messaging, as well as responsibility for controlling the flow of response. That’s no small task.

None of these recalls is going to keep me from shopping at Trader Joe’s, but they might deter others, especially those who may not be quite so loyal as I am. Let’s face it, recalls are a black eye, whether you are at fault or not. How you handle that recall will help define your future. It starts with pulling all of the items that “may contain” said foreign matter, and then allowing for no-questions-asked refunds.

That’s only the beginning though. How do you begin to assure shoppers that they will be safe shopping there? Remember, we’re talking about food, something we put in our mouths. And what we put in our mouths is sacred. I liken meal preparation and eating to a spiritual experience. That is perfectly consistent with the religious training I received as a youth, that our bodies are temples and to be respected as such. Now why would I want to risk ingesting rocks, insects, and metal?

Given that TJ’s only uses Pinterest and Instagram on social media, along with their podcast and printed newsletter called The Fearless Flyer, they do not have many channels of communication. It’s so much easier when you leverage all of the socials, because you can broadcast to millions with a few clicks and taps.

In fact, TJ’s presence on Insta is predominantly fan pages that get as much traction as the corporate page, with people reviewing new products, offering recipe advice, and the like. That’s all great in terms of free word-of-mouth, but Trader Joe’s never gets to take the microphone on those pages, only their own.

Lastly, TJ’s could consider finding new vendors for some of its private label products, especially if a track record of recalls were to be established. Even still, this is no small task, because extensive vetting must then be completed. Existing vendors were chosen after thorough product testing in the first place.

I’ll be watching, TJ’s. You’re not at risk of losing me, but you cannot ignore these matters. Five black eyes in a little more than a month is a bad look. Here’s to righting this ship and sailing boldly into the future.

the general publication timeline of the in-universe novels: or, the secondary degradation of danny my-boy’s sanity.

NOTE: this is just a result of me and my main le//stat/ar.mand playing silly buggers about the meta of the books existing within the books themselves. i’m not trying to make fun of anyone or drag any characters. please do not come at me.

1978 - After a lengthy transcription and research process, Daniel calls in every favor he has to get Interview published. The work is sold under a pseudonym, which does not bother Daniel in the slightest seeing as how he’s going to spend the intervening years trying to escape his future husband’s nonsense.

1980s - Lestat publishes his own memoirs, which become a hit on par with the original novel. The general public sees the publication as an excellent tie-in to the rising infamy and marketability of the rock star, and while it does bear his name, everyone assumes this is a sly bit of manufactured authenticity on the part of the original author. After aforementioned Vampire Rock Star survives the events of the third novel, he turns his collected summary of events over to Daniel, who in turns sends them to his publisher after some slight revisions. This is the core and canon body of work to my own interpretation.

1990s - The trilogy is a megahit in the literary world. Daniel and Lestat rake in royalties hand over fist. Daniel puts a lot of it back into the Island and surrounding communities. Lestat spends it on God only knows what. Still, it’s been years since anyone had an update on the coven, and the publishers are getting restless. Circa 1992, they reveal the first of the ghostwritten works, with Daniel none the wiser as it is not his story nor anything he can claim in royalties. The process repeats in 1995, with the second ghostwritten book published. Both of them in my lore are based more on fiction than fact, and clearly start fellating a certain Vampire Prince well beyond his actual virtues and actions. The series falls back into Coven hands with the publication of Armand’s memoirs, as dictated to David. The franchise will remain in his court in the coming decade, with numerous fictitious, fanfiction-esque additions. Everything published in this decade must be taken with a grain of salt. Everything in the new millennia must be assumed outright fabrications.

2000s - David rules the franchise with an iron fist. A cooler, sexier version of David becomes the very best of friends with Lestat within the novels, and everyone else sort of falls to the wayside. The series gets weirdly obsessed with a certain magically enhanced family from New Orleans. Daniel remains none the wiser until a late night conversation with his Maker that reveals Armand’s memoirs have already been published, which leads Daniel down the rabbit hole of realizing that the series continued on without his intervention for almost two decades. The eleven year break that ensues is largely down to Daniel having to wrestle with his publishers legally.

2010s - The dust is settled. Nothing has been published in almost a decade. One night, Hel and Armand bait Daniel into considering a dual rewrite and republication of the latter’s memoirs with more factually correct details than what David was getting at. A sullen Daniel tries to follow along, but finally admits the franchise has become a sore spot for him and he’d rather ensure its demise than get the facts straight, since it would take so much work to undo what others introduced to the ‘canon’ of the in-universe books. Several glasses of bloodwine later, the trio decide they’re going to kill the franchise. Drunk off their asses, they brainstorm a shitpost of a plot concerning the further adventures of their favorite Brat. Borrowing heavily from a fiercely-guarded short story collection certain Coven members have pieced together over the decades to vent frustrations about said protagonist, the book is released in 2014 amid the bemused tittering of its writer… Only to become an overnight success. Daniel breaks. He cannot escape the wheel of torment, he’s only started it spinning anew. Every book since has gotten more and more nonsensical and off the rails in a desperate attempt to kill the series before it kills him. His contract still isn’t up. He’s suffering.
