Simon has been in some truly miserable conditions. He's been under fire while the hot desert sun beat down on him, he's been pushed, bloody and broken, through boot camp. But, in this moment, he can't think of anything more soul-crushing than the mall on a Sunday afternoon.
But he needs new jeans. So here he is.
It's just a quick mission, he tells himself as he slips through the doors of a department store. In and out. He could always order them online, but then he'd have to put his name and address on some little internet form, and he doesn't trust it. This, torturous though it is, feels safer.
It's too bright, too crowded, too loud. But he knows where he's going, so he keeps his head down and pushes through.
"Excuse me, sir!"
Seemingly out of nowhere, there you are, stepping away from your spot near the cosmetics section and directly into his path.
He stares down at you, studying you quickly. He sees your eyes, wide and bright, and a nametag pinned to your blouse. You look a little sheepish at approaching him so directly, but you don't back down.
"I was wondering if I could interest you in purchasing a new fragrance?"
To Simon, it's a bizarre question -- he doesn't wear "a fragrance," he wears deodorant and aftershave at best. He's already not having a good time, so he scoffs a little and says, "Don't need one."
"Are you sure? I could show you some of the trendiest colognes for men, or if you have a wife or a girlfriend, perhaps a nice new perfume for her?"
He glances around the area, seeing a number of counters, some with makeup, others with skincare, then yours with all the fancy glass bottles of perfume. When he looks back at you, you're still gazing up at him, wearing a smile that doesn't fully reach your eyes.
"They forcing you to sell this shit?" he asks.
"What? No? This is my job," you tell him, a bit of your smile fading.
"Yeah, well, you look like you're doing it at gunpoint."
You hesitate, do a quick glance around, then lower your voice to say, "I've got to meet my quota is all."
He smirks, and asks, "That so?"
"Yeah. I haven't been meeting my sales goals, and I need the commission, you know? I'm not trying to be pushy, I just ... I've got the quota."
He's not sure exactly what possesses him to continue the conversation. All he wanted to do was buy a few pairs of jeans and go back home, but now here you are, looking all hopeful, and something in him tells him that he shouldn't just walk away.
"What do you wear then?" he asks.
He doesn't know where the question comes from, but you're already smiling again, more genuinely this time, and you move to the counter. You pull out a sample bottle, plain glass with a simple white label, and slide it over to him.
"For your wife?"
He doesn't answer, instead watching as you spray the perfume on a strip of paper and hand it out to him. When he takes it and lifts it to his nose, it's almost overwhelming -- he'd noticed the scent on you when you stepped in front of him, something warm and sweet, but smelling it like this ... it's like you, concentrated.
"I'll take it."
You let out a sigh of relief, getting a new box of the perfume out and packaging it up for him before ringing him up. When you give him back his change, he lets his fingers ghost over your palm as he picks it up -- not enough for you to notice, but enough that he certainly does.
Back home, he takes the perfume out of its box and sets it on his dresser. He doesn't know what to do with it, and he doesn't have anyone to give it to. And when he sprays just a little bit on his pillow, he tells himself that it's only because he doesn't want it to go to waste.

Design Choices

Hi, I’m back with some inspiration! As a designer in product development, this photo really resonates with me.
Pairing: Harry x Designer Reader (curvy or plus size—whatever you feel works best! This is just my preference 😌)
Summary: Harry invites you to a Pleasing meeting.
Word Count: 874
Warnings: None. Just fluff 💗
Please enjoy! I’m just doing this for fun.
✨masterlist✨ read the rest of Harry x Designer Reader there ...
Today, Harry had a meeting for his cosmetics brand, Pleasing. While getting ready, he saw his girlfriend sitting at her desk, working on designs and 3D renders for various brands vying for her talent.
He’d always wanted to add Y/N to his team of designers or do a small collaboration. However, being the shy and offline person she is, Y/N mostly kept her work to her portfolio and artworks online, with little to no social media presence. She’d told him before that she didn’t want to be seen as the girl who got work because of her boyfriend—something Harry found ridiculous since he would’ve gladly welcomed her on the team if she’d asked.
After slipping on his socks, he tiptoed to her workspace, wrapped his arms around her shoulders, and placed soft kisses on her head. Briefly, he watched her work on what appeared to be a floor plan for a coffee shop. An idea crossed his mind, one he hoped she’d be open to.
“Hey, baby. Are you busy today?”
“Uhmm, not really. I’m just finishing my files, and my meeting got moved to tomorrow. Why?” she replied while continuing to type up details and notes for her contractors.
“Well, if you’re done with that, would you like to join me in a meeting today?”
She quickly saved her file and closed her laptop, looking at Harry with curiosity.
“For… your next album?”
“No, silly! For Pleasing. We’re finalizing some packaging boxes and stickers for a new nail polish release this New Year.”
“Oh! Right, sorry. My mind’s been all over the place.”
“No worries, love. So, do you want to come?”
“Sure, but can you pack my stuff for me? I’ll just go change.”
“Go ahead. I’ll take care of it for you.”
Harry rummaged through her work bag, filled with her essentials: a pen case, notebooks, journals, sample swatches, three different types of measuring tools, and other knick-knacks she might need for meetings or site visits. Knowing her, inspiration—or a design mishap—could strike at any moment. He added her laptop and earphones to the bag just as she walked back into the room.
“Ready! Do you have my bag, babe?”
“Yup, everything’s secured. I’ll just put on my shoes, and we can go.” ...
As Harry drove them to Pleasing’s unofficial office, he broke the silence.
“Babe, thank you for coming with me today. I thought you’d say no and stay home.”
“Well, I know I’ve said I didn’t want to be part of the product development team, but I still want to support you. If going to this meeting means so much to you, I’ll gladly hop in when I’m free.”
At a red light, Harry grabbed her hand and kissed it gently. ...
When they arrived at the small office, Harry and Y/N were greeted warmly and offered coffee, pastries, and nuts. She placed her bag on the floor and settled onto the couch, her eyes immediately drawn to the sparkly, hot-pressed foils on the PR boxes inside a nearby cardboard box.
“You can touch them if you like,” said Harry’s head designer.
“Thank you. Harry, may I?”
“I know you’re dying to feel it, love. Don’t let me stop you.”
Harry smiled at her excitement as she examined the new products Pleasing had created. He silently observed her body language, sweating a little as he hoped nothing was out of place—knowing how detail-oriented she was.
“These are so nice. The feel is great. Do you have options where the box is fully foiled or mixed with matte finishes for texture variety?”
A sigh of relief escaped Harry’s lips as he saw her getting into her element.
“Yeah, we have all of that here,” the head designer replied. “Here are the inserts, the bottles, and other packaging we’ve printed, along with the initial samples, if you want to try them.”
They laid everything out on the table. Y/N immediately locked eyes with Harry.
“These are amazing! The supplier you got is really good. You have to tell me who they are!”
Harry chuckled at her enthusiasm.
“It’s a secret, love. I can’t reveal that to the competition. I might even ask the team to whip up an NDA before you leave.”
The three of them laughed at Harry’s joke, but soon the meeting shifted into a more serious tone. Work began in earnest, with Harry choosing his preferred designs, giving feedback, and discussing limitations and options with the team.
Meanwhile, Y/N started snapping photos of Harry looking serious, as well as top-down shots of the table and the stickers he was pointing to.
**“What do you think, love?” Harry asked.
Sorry, I was distracted. Can you say that again, babe?”
“I asked if we should add another color to the collection, or if this is enough?”
“Well, is it in your budget? I thought you already finalized a color story. Adding another might confuse the supplier if it’s a last-minute change. I’d recommend saving it for your next release or an expansion of the range, maybe with a different collaborator.”
Harry nodded, impressed by her quick, thoughtful response. He felt a surge of pride, knowing he was in a relationship with someone as brilliant and passionate as she was. ... Thank you so much for reading! I have more in store and might write again soon. See you! 💗

I loved your post about the care package your parents sent. You mentioned that Zoya sends you packages too, what does she include?
Zoya sends piles of magazines—French Vogue, Madame Figaro, l’Officiel. Paris Match and Point de Vue with all the eligible bachelors circled like it’s a catalogue. Sometimes old copies of Jalouse, because she says I haven’t grown out of it yet. She throws in perfume samples she’s working on, cosmetics she wants me to try and report back, handmade bitter chocolates and tea from Mariage Frères. Books, usually banned or at least not something for the coffee table, that she wants me to read with all her commentary in the margins, sometimes stuffed with money she’s had exchanged to sterling. Occasionally a silk scarf to add to my collection, ‘for church’, she writes, but they’re always far too extravagant for Mass. She doesn’t usually include a letter; I think she expects me to work out what she wants to say through everything else.

Make Your Own Cosmetics, Get What You Actually Want
Once you've been in zero waste, eco friendly, solarpunk/lunarpunk circles for a while, it's easy to forget the steps you took when you started. There are lots of DIY projects I've been doing for 10+ years now, and I keep doing them because they work (for me). Yet, when I sit back and think "am I doing enough?" I always gloss over the myriad things that have become part of my everyday life.
Making these things won't save the environment, but you'll get products that meet your needs on your terms, will save you money, and you won't have to worry about a company discontinuing your favorites. Plus, it seems like a lot less packaging to just buy a brick of beeswax and toss in some kitchen stuff you already had to make makeup.
Henna
I got really lucky, I always wanted red hair and henna is a natural dye that only comes in red. Well, more of a coppery tone. But, here's the other cool thing: the henna process is anti-fungal and controls dandruff. Half the time, I remember to color my hair because my scalp starts getting itchy 6+ weeks later and I start to get flakes. Coloring my hair takes care of my scalp and I don't need dandruff shampoo to keep it healthy. It's cost-effective, buying high quality henna for a year's worth of color (for my length and thicc hair) is about $60 for 18-months' of materials. I mix it when I need it, and keep the powder in the freezer. Pro-tip, if you or your partner don't like the grassy, hay-like smell of henna, add cardamom or ginger powder to the mix. It doesn't change the color but it'll knock down the scent.
I learned everything I needed to know about Henna for Hair here: http://hennaforhair.com and buy through Catherine's store because I know I'm getting real, quality henna powder.
Oh and a cloth wrap for your hair will let you keep the henna covered without wasting plastic wrap every time you redo your roots. I've been using the same 'turbie twist' wraps for years now. I made them from old t-shirts and they're stained as fuck. Who cares? This is basically their only job.
Carmine Lip Color
No, it isn't vegan. Yes, it's made of bugs. It's also a spectacular color, the insects aren't abused in the process of gathering or raising. They're actually parasites on nopal cactus, they have a simple niche and serve it well. I learned this lip stain recipe from Humblee & Me, and have found that the anti-bacterial doesn't seem to be necessary, ymmv. A 2.5 gram sample pack of carmine from TKB has lasted me almost a year and I wear this almost daily. I find that the glycerin really helps keep my lips from drying out too badly, so I wear my lip stain even when I'm not planning on being seen by other people. I spend about $20 on lip color for a year and that's including the bottles I use to store it (tiny eyedroppers work best imo) and the glycerin. Not quite zero waste but darn close.
Note: I'm still trying to find a simple recipe for black goth lipstick that I like. So far, my attempts have had a nasty texture and aren't worth the trouble.
Eyebrow Fill
My favorite brand of eyebrow liner discontinued the best color I ever found, so I decided to make my own. Beeswax, cocoa powder, activated charcoal, and almond oil made a little pot of eyebrow fill that suits my needs beautifully. Go super light on the charcoal until you know you've got the color you want. My brows are pretty dark but not fully black, so I do a dark chocolate sort of shade. I think I made my last batch about 11 months ago and it's still half full. I use it daily, apply with an angled brush, and it's never given me breakouts or anything. I don't even wash it off, because I am lazy.
Body Powder/Dry shampoo
Growing up in California, I didn't need this stuff. Living in Oregon? Summer would be awful without body powder. It's also a nice way to have a fragrance on. Pour your favorite perfume (I love Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab oils) onto a cotton ball, put that ball in a jar with a bunch of corn starch. Shake. Leave it for a month. You now have scented body powder. It's a decent dry shampoo, too, I just brush it into my dark hair and it disappears.
Tooth Powder
There is NOTHING wrong with using conventional toothpaste if it meets your needs. I have particular reasons for using tooth powder. These include hating the taste of most toothpaste and needing to avoid fluoride because of my particular thyroid condition. (Fluoride isn't bad for everyone! It isn't ideal for everyone. Figure out what you need!) I make my own tooth powder, it works well enough for me and I don't hate brushing my teeth like I used to. 1 part baking soda, 1 part bentonite clay, some ground cloves. Mix it up, keep in a glass jar (metal will bond with the clay, bad things happen, this is why we use glass or plastic for storage). $20 of materials = LOADS of tooth powder.
Cutting Hair
It's way easier than you think. I cut my own hair and I do a graduated bob which is a little more complex than most at-home cuts. I taught myself. I use decent shears (don't use scissors) and a Wahl hair trimmer set. Learn this skill on yourself, and when people find out you can do hair, they'll come to you for their own needs. Great way to provide mutual aid (one of my parents is trans and getting haircuts in a salon would be extremely stressful for her, so I cut her hair and save her money and suffering). You could also do skill trades! I trade haircuts for massages from a massage therapist friend, for example.
Protip: Dust yourself with body powder before cutting hair, it makes the little shards of cut hair way less prone to sticking to you. You'll still want a shower but it'll just be less icky.

Descending into the depths of the Fortress of Meropide was always quite the trek-- not only was the elevator slower than anything she had ever experienced, but the winding pathways throughout the prison served to do nothing but elongate the span of her trip. Thankfully, with all the times she had visited, she knew the layout like the blade of her sword. With a small package tucked under her arm, Clorinde swiftly found her way to the infirmary in search of a certain Melusine; a quirked brow graced her features upon finding her target, stopping to offer the 'gift' to the much smaller woman. "Hello, Sigewinne. I've brought a few samples of the new cosmetics recommended to me. Please let the Duke know that I fully expect him to be your trial canvas."

mineral master give us a mineral fact
The softest mineral on Earth is talc, a silicate mineral that’s used in many products such as makeup cosmetics and baby powder. People also often put talc in food items like packaged rice, chewing gum to even manufactured pill tablets.
I think the reason people put talc in so much is because it’s an anti-caking agent that keeps other ingredients from clumping together during production. It’s perfectly fine adding to food and such as far as I’m aware but as someone who has.. licked a sample of talc as a dare… yuck..
It’s actually pretty hazardous on its own, you can get poisoned. But not to worry! There is such thing as talc purification before they put it in consumable items.

Bit of a spontaneous shopping trip means I get to wear one of my fave lipsticks, yaaay :DDD makeup and scent deets under the cut!
Lipstick: Existence is Pain, a multichrome from Notoriously Morbid (i think this isn't available any more, but it's a really cool blue to purple shift!) They're fantastic for interesting liquid lips, highly recommended!
Eyeshadows: Blue Jay and One Night Stand from Looxi Beauty, which also looks to be not in business any more?? They're nice and vibrant but SO soft it's really hard to not mash them with the brush lol
Blush: Melt Cosmetics Blushlight in Daydreamer, one of my fave blush formulas. It's a bit expensive compared to my indie powder blushes, but the cream formula is gorgeous and blends in real well with just fingers
Highlight: Karla Cosmetics Seamless Satin in Lagoon Waves, which is a fucking INSANE multichrome highlighter. More expensive than I'd spend but it was a gift and I'm obsessed with it AND it's a UK indie which is rare. Also their packaging is absolutely flawless, so fucking beautiful. I'll definitely be exploring more form them for sure! It's cheaper than getting like, Kaleidos with US shipping anyway lol
Scent of the Day is Hydromancy from Sixteen92, a brand I will not recommend because of the owner's bullshit, but unfortunately this is one of my absolute HQ aquatic scents - it smells like a deep pool of water in the middle of a forest, and no salt!!! which is often my issue with aquatics (makes me sneeze....). I only have very little of my sample left, so at some point I might try to track down a full bottle without dealing with S92 lmao Notes: Fog, cold violet, lichen, ambroxan, mineral accord, petrichor, glass
#quail cheeping#quailface#sotd#idk if anyone is interested in motd look stuff but well! here it is anyway lol#don't get me started on indie makeup and perfume basically!!#(but do if u want like ten thousand recs lol)

sorry to bug you think Robbie and Dolores is ulliel family ( l'm see art ulliel cosmetics gatto paranormal detective rosemary and white)
Honestly we still know very little about the Ulliel family beyond what we've received via Gatto's trailer and package. I honestly still need to spend some time analyzing the contents of his package (I've read it but not had the time to give it deep though yet).
I'll try to give some rough thoughts at the moment at least.
At the moment, it seems confirmed the Ulliel family is different than the Melodis family, meaning we don't know who's part of it beyond Gatto's and Rosemary's involvements (as well as Paranormal Detective presumably based on Gatto's trailer as he says "we'll both be accomplices if we continue working for Ulliel").
We know they produce "luxury products popular among nobles", one of which supposedly grants "eternal youth" but known as "Eternal Beauty", though Gatto implies there's more to it than that. He talks about many having "lost their lives to it" as well as references a number of "missing person cases", like being people taken by the Ulliel family for their experiments for Eternal Beauty.
Based on Gatto's comic, it seems like the Melodis family is aware of what the Ulliel family is working on, with Noir potentially stealing the successful sample Gatto had been working on. He then says to send it to the "family patriarch" which should mean Salvatore (and explain Salvatore as well as DM appearing with Gatto and the Ulliel family in the trailer). This fits with one of the summaries for Gatto's comic that has the title "Theft at Ulliel Research Institute - The Missing Eternal Beauty".
Regarding the drugs, we learn during the Zinaida event about a drug called Delphi. Based on how they talk about it, this is likely a failed version created while they were attempting to make Eternal Beauty, with the effects stated to include hallucinations and death. A 2nd drug is described during the event, with both this and Delphi using a special fern as part of their ingredients. This 2nd one that helped the outbreak at the children's hopsital may be Eternal Beauty. It was a drug that was also mentioned to include drowsiness and becoming "very quiet" as side effects.
Considering what we know, if Robbie and Dolores were involved, I think they'd actually parallel either the people that go missing to be used for the Ulliel family's drug experiments or the kids at the children's hospital that were cured by that 2nd drug.
This would parallel with how Robbie and Dolores were also used in what was likely the Church's drug experiments at White Sand Street Asylum, and you could also say the way they ended up at Kreacher's orphanage and then with the church could semi-parallel with the "missing person's cases" caused by Ulliel. There's also how Robbie's death being indirectly caused by the Church and asylum during their experiments could parallel the deaths caused by Ulliel for their experiments. And I'm pretty sure Dolores my reference hallucinations caused by the "medicine" she took, especially as she also took Robbie's "medicine" (as well as her own) to likely keep him from being affected by it, which would fit the side effects of the Ulliel drugs (I'm pretty sure both the Delphi drug and Eternal Beauty can cause hallucinations due to both drugs being made by the same special fern. (Also a children's hospital would parallel the asylum which made itself out to be like a hospital, trying to help kids, while kids becoming "quiet" and "drowsy" after taking the medicine seems very similar to what happened to Emil when he was at the asylum being affected by the church's drugs/"medicine").
I don't know if it helps, but this is the best answer I had at the moment ;')

How to Get Your Products Certified Through an ADQCC Testing Lab in Abu Dhabi? | +971 554747210
In today’s competitive and highly regulated marketplace, product certification is a critical requirement for manufacturers, importers, and exporters aiming to operate in the UAE. The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC) plays a central role in ensuring that products meet essential safety and quality standards. Its network of ADQCC Testing Labs in Abu Dhabi provides comprehensive testing services that facilitate product certification in line with UAE and international regulations.
This blog explains the complete process of getting your products certified through an ADQCC Testing Lab in Abu Dhabi, highlighting the key steps, documentation, standards, and benefits for businesses seeking to achieve compliance and consumer trust.
What Is ADQCC and Why Product Certification Matters
The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC) is responsible for developing quality infrastructure in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Through its testing labs, ADQCC ensures that consumer products comply with applicable UAE.S standards, as well as GSO, ISO, REACH, and SASO guidelines where necessary.
Certification through an ADQCC Testing Lab offers:
Legal access to the UAE market
Increased consumer confidence
Avoidance of fines or product recalls
Competitive advantage in local and regional markets
Whether you are in food, cosmetics, textiles, electronics, or construction materials, using an ADQCC-accredited lab is a crucial part of your regulatory compliance strategy.
Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Products Certified Through an ADQCC Testing Lab in Abu Dhabi
Step 1: Identify Applicable Standards
Before testing begins, businesses must determine the relevant regulatory framework for their product. These may include:
UAE.S standards (for local compliance)
GSO standards (Gulf Cooperation Council)
SASO standards (for Saudi Arabia)
ISO/IEC guidelines
REACH or RoHS compliance for chemical content and hazardous substances
ADQCC offers expert consultations to help businesses identify which standards apply to their specific product category.
Step 2: Choose the Right ADQCC Testing Lab
ADQCC operates several specialized testing labs in Abu Dhabi, each tailored to particular industries, such as:
Food Testing Lab
Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Lab
Construction Material Testing Lab
Electrical & Electronics Testing Lab
Textiles and Leather Testing Lab
Choosing the appropriate facility ensures accurate testing and faster turnaround times.
Step 3: Prepare Required Documentation
Documentation is critical for successful product certification. Typical requirements include:
Product technical datasheet
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Bill of materials (BOM)
User manual (if applicable)
Product labels and packaging
Manufacturer declaration of conformity
Previous test reports (if available)
Providing complete and accurate documentation will speed up the testing and certification process.
Step 4: Submit Product Samples for Testing
Once your documents are ready, submit the physical product sample(s) to the designated ADQCC Testing Lab. Samples are assessed for:
Physical and mechanical performance
Chemical composition
Microbial safety (for food and cosmetics)
Label accuracy and compliance
Durability and performance testing
The testing will be conducted under strict ISO/IEC 17025 guidelines to ensure scientific accuracy and reliability.
Step 5: Review the Test Report
After analysis, the ADQCC Testing Lab will provide a detailed report outlining:
Test methods used
Measured results
Compliance status
Recommendations for corrective action (if any)
If your product meets all applicable standards, the report can be submitted for certification.
Step 6: Apply for Product Certification
With your ADQCC test report in hand, you can now apply for product certification through the appropriate regulatory body. This may include:
ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology)
Municipal health departments (for food and cosmetics)
GSO or SASO (for regional exports)
ADQCC works closely with these authorities, and reports from its labs are widely accepted for certification purposes.
Benefits of Using an ADQCC Testing Lab in Abu Dhabi
✅ Local Authority Recognition
Products tested through ADQCC labs are instantly recognized by Abu Dhabi and UAE regulatory authorities. This ensures smoother inspections, faster approvals, and fewer delays in getting your product to market.
✅ ISO 17025 Accreditation
All ADQCC Testing Labs are accredited under ISO/IEC 17025, which ensures competence in testing and calibration laboratories. Businesses can trust the validity and reliability of the results.
✅ Faster Time to Market
Local testing facilities mean shorter processing times and reduced costs compared to sending samples abroad. This is particularly important for perishable goods or time-sensitive product launches.
✅ Industry-Specific Expertise
ADQCC Testing Labs offer industry-focused testing capabilities. Whether it’s microbial analysis in food or chemical residue testing in leather accessories, the labs are equipped with the latest technologies and expert personnel.
Industries That Rely on ADQCC Testing for Product Certification
ADQCC Testing Labs serve a wide range of sectors, including:
Food & Beverage: Nutritional labeling, microbial load, allergen testing
Cosmetics & Personal Care: Skin irritation, heavy metals, banned substances
Construction Materials: Cement strength, rebar tensile tests, fire resistance
Electronics: RoHS compliance, electrical safety
Textile & Leather Goods: Colorfastness, pH value, azo dye testing
Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them
🔸 Incomplete Documentation
Ensure that all documents are complete and accurate. Working with a regulatory consultant or the ADQCC advisory team can help prevent delays.
🔸 Non-Compliant Samples
If a sample fails to meet compliance, request a retest after implementing the suggested corrective actions. Use the test report as a guide.
🔸 Unfamiliarity with UAE Standards
Businesses new to the UAE market should invest time in understanding UAE.S standards. ADQCC provides resources and support to help navigate these regulations.
Conclusion
Getting your products certified through an ADQCC Testing Lab in Abu Dhabi is a structured and transparent process that ensures compliance with local and international standards. By choosing ADQCC, businesses benefit from reliable testing, regulatory recognition, faster market entry, and enhanced consumer confidence.
Whether you're a manufacturer, exporter, or importer, working with an ADQCC-accredited lab is a smart move to ensure product success in the UAE and beyond.

How Shelf Life Testing Labs Determine Expiry Dates for Packaged Goods?
In the world of packaged goods, ensuring product safety and quality over time is critical—not just for consumer satisfaction, but also for regulatory compliance. Central to this assurance is the expiry date, which informs consumers about the safe period for using a product. But have you ever wondered how companies accurately determine these expiry dates? The answer lies in the expertise of Shelf Life Testing Lab.
Shelf life testing labs use scientific methods and advanced technologies to evaluate how packaged goods perform under various conditions. This helps manufacturers establish reliable expiry dates, ensuring their products remain safe and effective throughout their marketed lifespan. In this blog, we’ll explore the detailed process of how shelf life testing labs determine expiry dates for packaged goods and why this process is vital for both businesses and consumers.
What Is Shelf Life Testing?
Shelf life testing refers to the series of laboratory tests and analyses designed to assess the stability and longevity of products over time. This process simulates storage conditions such as temperature, humidity, light exposure, and packaging effects to observe how a product’s quality, safety, and performance change.
Shelf life testing is applicable across numerous industries, including food and beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals. The results from these tests help determine the expiry date or best before date printed on packaging.
Why Is Determining Expiry Dates Important?
Expiry dates serve as critical indicators of product safety and quality. Here’s why accurate expiry dating is essential:
Consumer Safety: Using a product beyond its expiry date can pose health risks, especially for consumables and pharmaceuticals.
Regulatory Compliance: Authorities worldwide require accurate expiry dates to ensure products meet safety standards.
Brand Reputation: Reliable expiry dates help maintain consumer trust and reduce the risk of product recalls.
Waste Reduction: Accurate expiry dates prevent premature disposal of safe products and reduce unnecessary waste.
Given these stakes, manufacturers must rely on precise shelf life testing from accredited labs to establish expiry dates scientifically.
How Shelf Life Testing Labs Determine Expiry Dates
Determining expiry dates is a complex process that involves multiple steps, sophisticated testing methods, and careful interpretation of data. Below is an overview of how shelf life testing labs approach this critical task:
1. Initial Product Assessment
The process begins with a thorough assessment of the packaged good. Shelf life testing labs analyze:
Product formulation and ingredients
Packaging materials and sealing methods
Intended storage conditions (e.g., refrigerated, ambient)
Expected distribution and usage timelines
This information guides the design of relevant stability tests to replicate real-world scenarios.
2. Selection of Testing Parameters
Labs identify key parameters to monitor during the testing period. These often include:
Microbial growth: To detect spoilage or contamination.
Chemical stability: Changes in active ingredients or preservatives.
Physical attributes: Texture, color, viscosity, or separation.
Sensory properties: Taste, smell, and appearance.
Packaging integrity: Barrier properties and seal effectiveness.
Choosing appropriate parameters depends on the product type and regulatory requirements.
3. Stability Testing Protocols
Shelf life testing labs follow standardized protocols to evaluate product stability, including:
Real-Time Stability Testing: Products are stored under recommended conditions for the expected shelf life duration. Samples are tested at specific intervals to observe changes.
Accelerated Stability Testing: Products are exposed to elevated stress conditions (higher temperatures, humidity) to speed up degradation processes. Results are extrapolated to predict real-time shelf life.
Stress Testing: Extreme conditions such as freezing, UV exposure, or mechanical stress may be applied to identify vulnerabilities.
These tests provide comprehensive data about how a product’s quality changes over time.
4. Data Analysis and Expiry Date Prediction
Once data is collected, scientists at the testing lab analyze trends in the monitored parameters. Key considerations include:
When do microbial counts exceed safe limits?
At what point do chemical components degrade beyond acceptable thresholds?
Are there significant changes in sensory or physical properties that impact consumer acceptability?
Using statistical models and regulatory guidelines, labs extrapolate the shelf life period during which the product remains safe and retains intended quality. This predicted timeframe forms the basis for the expiry date.
5. Verification and Validation
Before finalizing expiry dates, labs may conduct confirmatory tests or challenge studies to validate the predictions. This ensures that the expiry date is reliable and defensible.
Factors Affecting Expiry Dates in Packaged Goods
Expiry dates depend on multiple variables, including:
Product Composition: Ingredients that are prone to oxidation or microbial growth tend to have shorter shelf lives.
Packaging Type: Barrier properties, oxygen permeability, and sealing quality significantly impact product stability.
Storage Conditions: Temperature fluctuations, humidity, and light exposure accelerate degradation.
Manufacturing Processes: Hygienic practices and preservative efficacy affect shelf life.
Shelf life testing labs evaluate these factors holistically to assign accurate expiry dates.
Role of Packaging in Shelf Life Testing
Packaging plays a crucial role in protecting products and extending shelf life. Testing labs assess:
Barrier Effectiveness: Ability to block moisture, oxygen, and contaminants.
Physical Durability: Resistance to punctures, tears, and seal failures.
Compatibility: Interaction between packaging material and product components.
Results from packaging tests help labs recommend improvements to extend product stability and adjust expiry dates accordingly.
Regulatory Guidelines and Shelf Life Testing
Shelf life testing labs also ensure that expiry dates comply with regulatory standards such as:
FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
EFSA (European Food Safety Authority)
GCC Standards in the UAE and Middle East
Codex Alimentarius for Food Products
Cosmetic Regulations and Pharmacopeias
Compliance with these regulations is essential for market authorization and consumer safety.
Benefits of Partnering with Accredited Shelf Life Testing Labs
Choosing an accredited Shelf Life Testing Lab offers several advantages:
Reliable and Accurate Results: Labs accredited with ISO 17025 or similar certifications adhere to strict quality standards.
Customized Testing Solutions: Tailored protocols based on product type and market needs.
Regulatory Expertise: Labs guide manufacturers on compliance and documentation.
Advanced Technologies: Access to cutting-edge analytical instruments ensures detailed assessments.
Conclusion
Determining expiry dates for packaged goods is a critical step in product development and market launch. Shelf Life Testing Labs use scientific methods, thorough analysis, and regulatory insights to ensure that expiry dates are accurate and reliable. These labs play a vital role in protecting consumers, helping manufacturers comply with regulations, and maintaining brand integrity.
For manufacturers and brands, partnering with a trusted shelf life testing lab is essential to confidently provide safe, high-quality products with trustworthy expiry dates—ultimately fostering consumer trust and business success.
