I absolutely get what you are saying and I was talking to a gyn about this irl only yesterday. Like yes, patriarchy is bad but having patriarchy control your decision making through "well if patriarchy tends to say yes I must say no" doesn't maximise women's autonomy. I think it's good to be aware of the patriarchal pressures, learn more so you can do a more true cost/benefit analysis for yourself, then make your own decision.
I don't think acting as a walking talking billboard for your political opinions through how you present yourself is an effective means of social change & this twisting of "the personal is political" is really unfortunate. I hope that the gyns doing that aren't aware of the author's views and that misrepresenting the intended meaning is an honest mistake.
I 100% agree, I think that a lot of ppl on here only get so far as cultural femininity = tool of the patriarchy and patriarchy = bad so femininity = bad. Which as short hand kind of works, but I think it misses the big picture.
With regard to femininity in general, I think one thing libfems are (half) right about is that a lot of feminine things are seen as demeaning because they are associated with women. While sometimes certain inherently demeaning roles are "assigned" to women via feminity (such as being a sexual object) i dont think that means that everything feminine has an inherent quality of being demeaning, lesser, or damaging. I mean like for example, we have evidence of this with how careers and sports and fields of study that are female dominated and therefore associated with women are seen as lesser, command less respect, and don't pay as well. Like it's directly observable that when women were dominating compsci it paid like being a secretary, whereas now it is incredibly lucrative and very well respected.
But since we're taking about aesthetics specifically, lets talk about body hair again, why is a man who trims or shaves his chest/back hair not really worthy of comment (maybe some people might think its vain, and therefore not masculine... hm), but if he shaves his legs... it's a flat out joke?
If you look at the expectations of femininty physically everything expected of women is a deviation from the "natural" - removal of body hair, a body that needs to be maintained through careful diet and exercise, smooth/long/neatly coifed hair, makeup to cover blemishes, blemishless/unwrinkled skin that requires a routine to maintain, etc.
Secondly, the exaggerate existing sexual dimorphism in humans. Men are typically harrier than women, their hair is coarser, they are typically larger, they usually have thinner lips and smaller eyes and lower brows, smaller chests and hips and wider waists, etc.
Men are allowed to be natural, they are allowed to not alter themselves and it is a neutral decision and the masculine has to be separate from the feminine as much as possible to help maintain the separation between the sexes which makes it easy to "other" women. So, in order to do that, women must be pushed into making obligatory alterations of their body to more clearly define the social classes of men/women.
It also serves as a vessel to deliver shame to women by constantly communicating to us that our bodies are shameful and need to be changed. "Not only is your body weaker than men's and more easily exploited, but the one thing it's good for (ornamental value/sexual gratification) can't even be accomplished naturally, to fulfill your "purpose" you need to constantly change yourself or you are without value." While Men are allowed to just be.
When a man shaves his legs its funny and worthy of mockery because shaving your legs is feminine, not because there's anything more inherently degrading about removing leg hair vs removing chest hair.
That's why there's also a "right" way to decorate yourself - really, if you do actual creative makeup (or even just "beauty" makeup but badly) you get told that you look like a clown a lot or if you dress up in the "wrong" way you'll get ridiculed also. One example is lolita fashion, which is hyper feminine but was still invented as an inversion of what is expected of Japanese women (a mature, subdued, sexy look). I mean... they're are butch women who spend quite a lot of effort on their appearance (suits are not very comfortable, a good one is expensive and needs to be tailored. Plus you have colognes and grooming products for short hair (similar to what men use)), but they don't get rewarded for it societally because they are still stepping out of line with what is expected of their class. It's just a delivery system for shame and assimilation into the "woman" social class.
That's also why the goals of feminine grooming change over time, if they were just the "most degrading" option wouldn't they be stagnant and never overlap with what men have done at any point? But instead, we see bodytypes and facial features go on and out of style, we see constantly evolving fashion trends, and what sort of roles women are "allowed" to take in society. The specifics aren't that important, it is the grooming into shame, which is then used to keep women compliant and subservient.
Really, on a basic level, it's not a big deal to shave your legs. You're probably not going to get an infection from a cut and you're probably not wasting *that* much time. Wearing heels occasionally isn't going to ruin your joints (men used to wear heels too at times and they were fine) the truly important part about compulsory grooming is the above, at least in my opinion.
And... thats why I think its counter productive to weaponize that same shame to make women chase after a new moving target which is just "the opposite of what men want" or the current ever evolving patriarchal standard. I had an online classes with
Assignments that required materials that were not provided ("write an analysis and best steps to take for Situation A," with no Situation A documents) (Eventually I pestered the teacher with "this assignment is due in two days and I don't have the starting documents" - and he gave me a half-paragraph set of facts and told me to use those. I have no idea if I was the only student in the class who noticed the missing materials.)
Feedback of "the citation style is wrong" because I used the method for citing court cases (for... citing court cases) instead of the "Author. Title. Source. Date." method.
A teacher who provided no feedback whatsoever, including comments in the required forum discussions, and didn't answer emails; as far as I know, she launched the class and checked out until it was time to enter final grades.
A teacher who initially failed me for an assignment because I had used an old document and replaced the text (I had an Excel file from my personal docs that had a similar kind of content; I was able to use it with just a few changes) - she noticed the date and thought I'd copied it from somewhere else. (I was able to pester her into taking a new file.)
A teacher who gave me a "B" on an assignment for the wrong class. As in, I submitted an environmental science essay to my business law class, and he gave it a B without comment, presumably because it was well-written even if 100% not the topic of the class. I submitted my actual assignment two days later with apologies; he upgraded my grade to A... and he never spoke to me again, not in that class or the next I had to take with him. (I may have been the only student he had who was usefully participating in the forums and getting all my assignments done on time.)
Online classes run the range from "really good; great way to learn stuff without the hassle of in-person specific-time classes" and "you might as well be downloading random videos and filling out google forms and hope you wind up with a decent grade for it."
If you find ones that are closer to the latter, make notes about what's wrong, and file complaints. You may need help writing up the complaints, because as mentioned "teacher is an asshole" is not a fire-able offense. "Teacher fails to provide an education" is, but you have to give specific details.
(I only complained about one teacher, the one who was never there, because she wasn't grading things. For the others - I was trying to slam through 8 quarters worth of classes in 5 to keep the costs down, and minor negligence on their part was to my benefit. But I documented a lot of it, because "I am good at online learning" is not the same as "they provided a competent education.")
(Oh and a year or two after I graduated, the entire school system shut down because they got found guilty of fraud, filed bankruptcy, and a lot of us got our loans forgiven because of that.)
I'm sorry, professor, I consider publishing your course a day late, having a mandatory live zoom meeting during business hours to stay enrolled for an asynchronous class, and requiring students to use a $60 ***pdf*** that you wrote as their textbook to be exceptionally unprofessional and since I've still got 14 days to get a refund I'm totally not paying $150 to take your class.
Also, for all the newbie professors out there: a syllabus is not just a greeting and a list of assignments. If you haven't given your students AT LEAST your office hours, your late work policy, and your preferred method of being contacted, then you have not given your students a syllabus it's just sparkling announcements.
But really. Sir. SIR. You teach Speech 100. This is one of the most basic classes with like, 20 of the most widely available accepted textbooks and you want me to pay sixty dollars for a pdf of a book that you rewrite every semester so that there are no previous editions?
Buddy this is interpersonal communication, not introductory rhetoric. Why is one of your *four* total assignments about Socrates?
Maybe it's the fact that I've taken Spch 100 interpersonal communication three times already, maybe it's the fact that I grew up with somebody who taught Spch 100 interpersonal communication from 1981 to 2018, but buddy what the fuck are you doing?
"Some of our lectures will only be available for 24 hours so it is up to you to stay on top of it."
Friend, you are teaching an asynchronous online 100-level class at a community college during a pandemic. Get off your high horse, a third of your students are probably parents. There is no reason whatsoever to limit access to course materials to 24 hours unless you are doing it to be a controlling asshole.
Also YOU published your class a day and a half late! You don't get to publish your class late with an incomplete syllabus and tell students to "stay on top of it." Especially not since that means that people have two fewer days to buy your PDF textbook and only one full day to prepare for your mandatory 1pm on a Tuesday zoom meeting!
Why do you require me to have access to a printer for an online class? Oh yeah it's because you expect me to print out and draw on sections of your $60 ebook.
SIR. No thank you.
Kids, new students: this is a level of bullshit and disorganization from a professor that you do not have to put up with. This is a neatly ordered series of red flags that say "this professor is going to be absolutely unbearable."
Also *any* humanities class where your whole grade is 4 assignments should get serious side-eye. You should be able to pass most 100 level humanities classes by just turning in weekly assignments. 4 assignments means that by the time you figure out how the professor grades you're probably close to halfway through the class. Look for classes that require weekly participation as a major chunk of the grade because that way, even if you fuck up a project in a major way, just showing up can save your ass.

Danny knew he was doing great—hell, he gets to present his last project for mechanical engineering before he can refocus on making robots programmed to help during crises for medical, evacuation and environmental clean up while being tailored to local needs.
Problem: the team he’s supervising is going on a mission mid-presentation that he cannot reschedule… and none of the others in the JL have offered to cover for him.
Why they keep trying to make Captain Marvel handle it is beyond him—he’s a member of the young justice team because he’s a kid. He’s thirteen now, sure, but he’s still a kid.
And while he loves his truama-bonded gremlins—Bart holding a special place in his heart—he is putting his foot down on sending his feral mentees out without some adult back-up.
“Hey, Canary? Can i talk to you for a minute?”
He noticed since Red Arrow’s relapse a year ago, she’d been the most responsive to his concerns regarding his kids.
“Sure thing, just let me wrap up this report.”
Danny waited. Once she was done, they moved to one of the private conference rooms.
“So, i know my team is scheduled for that raid on the Light next week, and i know its on the schedule that I can’t attend,” he began.
Canary nodded along.
“Is there a reason why another mentor wasn’t assigned?”
She paused at that.
“Another mentor—Captain Marvel is going to be there, so you don’t need to worry Phantom.”
“I kind of do, since he’s got a lot on the civilian side coming up with him finally starting high school a week after the raid.”

Danny paused. “He’s starting high school—he’s one of the youngest on the team developmentally speaking, even if he got a weird aging side affect to his powers too.”

One day he hopes he can be as good an actor as Plas—he’s still not sure why so many don’t remember hiw little he needs to regenerate from or how capable he really is.
“Cap, take a seat,” Flash offered, pulling put his chair before settling back into his own, room still too quiet.

“Thanks,” he smiled. “Now, what’s the emergency meeting for?”
“You’re not in high school yet,” Green Arrow began. “And Phantom is a graduate student?”
Billy didnt see the issue. “Starting a week after the mission, and Phantom’s graduating a week or so after—year thrown by rouge attacks at his school,” He explained.
Batman hrm’d at that. “It was shut down for a few months.”
Billy nodded.
“You, you are a kid,” one of the lanterns began slowly.
“Well yeah, isnt that why you put me on the team with Phantom? He’s been mentoring me since we met and clocked everything. Why else would we be on Young Justice together?”
The room exploded into a cacophony of sound.
I need a Misunderstanding trope where Phantom is put with one of the ‘kid’ groups because everyone assumes he’s a teen, but Phantom (he’s, like, 28) thinks he’s just like… co-managing/supervising the group with another Justice League member.
Asked if he’s in school thinking high school? He says yes, thinking of college where he’s going for his graduate degree. His grumbles over homework and time management skills cements it.
ICE contact? Frostbite. Yeah, that’s really his name. (Jazz talked him out of putting her because if it’s an emergency then they likely need medical history and support.) Here’s a device to actually reach him. His parents? Uhhh, nah, I would put my sister second.
It just goes on.
The guy snarks, puns, and throws jokes, clearly up-to-date with internet culture. He’s a casual dude, loves video games, burgers, and space. He’s kinda short and a little lanky, but he’s stupid strong (like he both forgets he is strong and doesn’t know his strength at times).
Phantom’s checking all the boxes as a teen hero both visually and on vibes with the League so they put him there. Danny’s touched that they think he’s responsible enough to put him in charge of the kids, so he does his best.
(Batman finds out about the appointment after it’s approved, but before he says anything he sees how much the teens open up around Phantom and… well… if they didn’t do their homework to see that the Phantom persona has been active for 14 years with pop-ups through history then that’s not really his problem, is it? He might miss that Phantom doesn’t realise this for a while…whoops.)
