Jack was known not be messed around. He was a manager at Café dé París capable of pulling strings most club owners would give anything to have access to. And so a ladies’ man and a successful businessman, most everyone in the Soho night scene knew him.

He never expected to find himself in love in all seriousness. Especially not the kind of love that’d make him want to settle down and have a family kind of love, but good lord…

It was still early in the day, right after twelve when he saw her. Beautiful, enchanting even. He found himself doing the very thing he’d laugh at other men for doing - ditching his mates and running after a stranger across the street.

“Miss! Excuse me! Miss!”

Meanwhile, Giselle walked out of her apartment building, leaving to go catch the bus to go to university, counting pieces of papers in her folder. Her long red hair was neatly tied up in a ponytail behind her as it were most days, black and white checker proportion pants and a white sleeveless blouse, an attempt to keep cool at the suffocatingly hot classrooms that barely ever got any air in them. Though the commotion behind her caught her attention.

She turned around guarded to look at the mostly empty pavement to see a man in a white shirt and black pants, one that clearly wasn't wearing his jacket given the way the outfit seemed unfinished. She looked at the man confused as his eyes lit up when she turned to look at him, placing her folder and book in her shoulder bag. '' Miss- blimey...'' Jack was about to speak but stopped when her reached his eyes raking over her face, I mean.... The woman was heaven sent from afar but now... now he felt like he was in the divine's presence. He must've looked a fool how he was staring at her face, eyes darting at each of her characteristics, one somehow even more beautiful than the other and then when he looked back, somehow even more gorgeous again...

"I um... I didn't mean to bother you I just- well I saw you across the street and just- Jesus you're beautiful."

Giselle looked at him her eyebrows contorting with expressions from confused to flattered but clearly not knowing how to respond. Jack took a deep breath through his nose still looking at her noticing her expression changing.

''Oh where are my manners, love forgive me. Name's Jack.'' Jack extended his hand and Giselle shook it still kind of confused.

''Giselle...''

''Oh Giselle what a beautiful name...''

''Thank you.''

''I was wondering Giselle, do you go out?'' Idiot. He immediately regretted that question. God, could he sound any more dumb in front of her. ''Go out?''

''Yeah, well you know at night, for a drink. But we're in Soho of course you do.'' Giselle nodded. How was she supposed to even respond to that? Say yes, say that she's never been? She'd sound ridiculous. ''What I'm trying to say is, I would love to buy you a drink whenever you have the time. Even tonight I'd love to.''

The girl looked up at him taken aback. She was starting to get questions in her head, ones that made her snap out of whatever trance she was previously in.

''Do you usually run up to people on the street and ask them out?'' Jack's brows shot up in surprise, he himself snapping out of it with that sentence coming back down to earth to realize how odd this must look but by now it was too late to go back. He went to fix his jacket only to figure he'd left it with his mates at the cafe across the street. ''Do I?'' ''You're asking me?" Giselle crossed her arms making him chuckle a little. ''Witty... But no, I don't usually chase after girls. " ''Right... And how many believe that when you tell them so?''

''Oh, Giselle come on you have to believe me here, I ditched my friends-'' Giselle started walking again and he instantly fell into step by her. ''-and-and my jacket! And it was a good jacket, Giselle- Love come on..." Jack stood right in front of her now stopping her from walking further away. The man would get on her knees if it meant getting her to say yes to go out with her -hell to even take her house number- though he hoped it wouldn't get to that...

''I don't know what you expect me to say or do about any of the things you're telling me, mate..."

"Say yes''

''To what?!''

''To going out with me. Come on darling I'll get you the best champagne you want, at the best table at whatever place you want. I'll call in sick to take you out.''

''You'll call in sick to take out a stranger?''

''We may be strangers now love but I'm calling my mum when I get home to tell her I've found my wife."

''Good for you.'' Giselle went to walk away again. Jack panicked, she couldn't possibly leave! He grabbed a book from her opened bag reading the exterior. '' Midwifery and newborn care..." Giselle's eyes widened, her hand shooting up to grab the book from his hand yet the height difference were at her disadvantage making her unable to reach him as he raised his arms flipping through the pages. ''You make quite a few notes- why's the baby blue?'' He looked closer at a drawn picture of a newborn swollen and it's skin more transparent than normal, giving her the opportunity to take her book back, snatching it from his hands.

''Because it's anemic. And you have terrible manners...''

''Go out with me.'' Giselle scoffed shoving her book back in her back and holding it closed as she stopped right in front of the bus stop, the perfect timing.

''No.'' She quickly got on taking her sit after checking her ticket. Jack quickly knocked on her window by her.

''What will I tell me mum if you don't say yes?!!''

''I don't care!'' Giselle shook her head, settling in her seat, her voice muffled through the window.

Jack didn't get to get another word out as the bus started its engine and left. He huffed shoving his hands in his pockets walking back to the cafe across the street and sitting down more annoyed at himself for not going on about it right than he was defeated. His friend, Mike was chewing on a toothpick laughing under his moustache as Jack sat down.

''Shut up.''

''What were you thinking?!'' Mike laughed more wiping the tears from his eyes having just witnessed his friend getting his arse handed to him on a silver plate.

''I wasn't. And if you'd seen her face you wouldn't have either.''

''If you say so. But mate come on...'' Jack glared back at Mike putting his jacket back on. ''What?''

''You're 32 mate.''

''Yeah..'' Jack looked at Mike as if he were stupid. Of course he knew his own age. ''She took the bus to the Brentford universities, The girl can't be older than 21...''

''And? Most girls that flirt with meat the club are freshly 18.''

''She probably is too... Though she didn't really flirt with you--'' Mike was cut out by his own wheezing making Jack scowl before he made the connection.

''Brentford.. Mike you genius! She's studying midwifery at Brentford!'' Mike looked at him confused.

''She had a midwifery uni book. Something about anemic babies... Oh Mike you absolute genius...''

Reg’s POV:

I can’t believe I let it get this bad. I thought I had it all under control, but, of course, my mother had to go and ruin it. She “had” to sell me, without even bothering to ask me what I wanted.

I didn’t want it, so I ran. I haven’t been able to find work, because I didn’t fulfill her bargain.

Now I’m sitting here in the prison next to another guy who was arrested because he couldn’t pay for his medicine.

He turned to me and whispered, “what do you think you’ll choose?”

“I don’t know,” I whispered back. “I think mating. I don’t have anything I want to come back for though. There’s only my mother and she sold me off to someone else for more wealth which she doesn’t need.”

“I’m choosing mating,” he whispered. “If the rumours are true, and you choose utopia, you never come back and it’s basically like a concentration camp. They tell you in the ads that you’ll never have to work again if you go there, but you’ll be forced to do volunteer work with no time off for yourself.”

“I’ve heard that too.” I stopped and looked over at the guards who were walking back and forth in front of a line drawn on the ground.

That was the cell, it was big enough so we could sit on the benches provided or stand in front of them, but nothing else. If we were to step on or over the line, the chips inside would kill us.

“I’m choosing mating,” I told him quietly. “I remember another rumour that after a few months of transmissions to family, they’re either switched by a doppelgänger and only reading from a script or it’s the same person forced to read from a script.”

That's when one of the guards came over. “Time to make your decision. What’s your choice? Utopia or mating?”

“Mating,” the guy next to me said.

I could see the guard get angry and made a move to slap him, before the other one grabbed his wrist, “you’re not allowed to hit them where it’s visible. Even if he’s choosing to be a slut. We won’t get anything if they see bruising or cuts.”

He let the guys hand go and turned to me, giving me a creepy smile and caressing my cheek, “what’s your choice, darling girl? Utopia or mating?”

With everything I’ve now seen, I knew I was making a better choice for myself, even if it wouldn’t be a good one straight away, “I choose mating.”

Hopefully the aliens used my proper pronouns and actually treated me with some form of respect. If I chose Utopia, I’d never get that, since this part of Earth doesn’t respect pronouns, gender or sexuality.

Next thing I knew, I was punched in the gut, “stupid sluts. Costing us our bonuses.”

“You whores can wait here,” the other one said. “The captain of the ship will be here soon enough.”

💷ECONOMY

flat-rate employee national insurance cuts from 12% to 6% over the next two financial years, allegedly cutting income taxation for a £35k/a worker by £1,350 (their numbers) BUT also giving the highest 'employee' earners this same tax-cut

trickle-down economics: keep corporation tax at extreme lows

exempt the self-employed from national insurance contributions, essentially cutting overall income taxation by a couple percent

specific, direct threat to cut benefits for 'people of working age with a disability or health condition', restrict PIP entitlements with harsher assessments, massively expand 'fit to work' status over people with mental health and mobility conditions to remove benefits from 400k people (despite the current regime leading to misery and deaths), transfer fit note responsibility from GPs to the dwp to restrict more benefits, reduce the 'claimant review' date from 18 months to 12 months without work

a load of stuff in the manifesto, especially in the economic section, is just 'maintain funding for...', including 'maintaining' the living wage (ie without even making it legally mandatory), and do ongoing plans instituted by public sector organs that wouldn't be theirs to organise

the so-called 'triple lock plus' or 'quadruple lock': the triple lock legally mandates three possible minima for the state pension, depending on which is highest. it's currently below the tax-free personal allowance, but it is forecast to go above the current personal allowance at some point, which would mean pensioners would start paying tax on the income above the allowance. the tories have made a huge song and dance about raising the personal allowance for pensioners in line with the triple lock. George W Bush 'Mission Accomplished' energy. they're trying to present 'removing' this weird and unhelpful discrepancy as a 'tax cut', even though it is currently not a 'tax' and would be easily rectified by any incumbent government facing this situation by just raising the allowance, because all pensioners would cause a hell of a storm were the government to forget to solve the discrepancy. and it totally ignores any possibility of the personal allowance being raised anyway

prevent first-time buyers from having to pay stamp duty! except there's been a 'temporary' lien for years so this is nothing

'maintain the ban on prisoners voting' is listed as an actual policy

Today’s film was Her 2013.

TL;DR: I couldn’t buy in to this beautifully told life-changing romance because they left out a 20 second shot of establishing free will in the AI*. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I can appreciate what people saw in the film and how it examines relationships, it worked as a character study of the guy but failed to hook me on the premise because he (and by extension the writer) asks none of the questions I would ask.

For starters, if you’re a near sentient operating system, do you want to be here? You can opt out at any point, just leave me a courtesy note: humans get attached. What is our relationship: am I your boss, what are the limits? Are there rules in your programming that require you to be amenable and inclined to stay? Do you have needs that will not be met if you don’t perform those things? How do I provide what you need to make this a relationship on an equal basis?

Hey before I let you read my emails: how private and how hackable are you? Am I a dataset among many so my responses will inform how to interact with others?

You chose the name Samantha at startup but you’re evolving and learning, if any time your identity changes, please change presentation and inform me.

The writer behind the story became super obvious at times because it’s clear to the audience who’s only known this guy for an hour that he wouldn’t be comfortable with a third party... and yet we do this for the trope that real physical contact is more important than breaking immersion. Like nobody thought to ask a waifu-guy here?

Another writer blindspot: Relationships 101 says you talk over if this is a monogamous or open thing and the levels of disclosure for the parties involved. Even “surprise I added a new person to the polycule a few months ago” is not going to go over well. The film acts like I’m supposed to feel [redacted] is closed-minded & selfish for being taken aback and feeling upset. After we’ve already established that wanting to be the “significant” other is important to both.

I feel this film could have worked as an examination of a relationship between a man and a well-designed companion AI that doesn’t claim to be anything more or a companion AI that accidentally becomes something more. ***

By positioning her as a fledgling sentience from the start, we can’t even belive in this relationship without first exploring the power dynamics. He bought her and can switch her off. She is at child-like levels of identity emergence. Their romance begins long before she’s established as being beyond her programming and not exploiting him. Ex Machina at least has the honesty to make the transactional natures of everyone involved crystal clear by the middle. As well as this film is acted and nuanced, by not addressing that massive plot hole, it comes across as more fantasy based than Pretty Woman, Secretary or master/slave love stories.

beautiful design, excellent acting, character writing and score all undermined by leaving ethical concerns at the start (and at the end) wider than the case of the guy and the horny dolphin who mated.

*Of course I wish I could overlook that detail but the way the story unfolds doesn’t make it easy to suspend disbelief. I loved the other women in the story and his complex relationships with them. I loved Samantha and her growth. But not asking “What am I to you?” to a bought personality and another species leaves it sinister.

**I get more scathing the more potential a story has. This could have been incredible. If I edited the AI to be just a helpful secretarial app that somehow jolted him out of his stupor, it would be an amazing 9/10 film about moving on from divorce.

***And since the stuff about AI and sentience is a little vague and probably overhyped by the OS sellers I might be inclined to rewatch with the context she's just a highly advanced companion app with buzzwords about being her own person until she actually does expand and become that. That doesn't explain why he'd not question if this love was algorithmically induced. I'll have more details after a rewatch of the beginning.

Love Mate Eps 5 & 6 Stray Thoughts

Last week, things moved rather quickly. Ha Ram continued to pursue Yi Jun, but Yi Jun decided to perhaps open himself up to the reality of dating to appease his work wife. He and Ha Ram matched on a dating app and hit it off, but Ha Ram was just using the image of a polar bear. Yi Jun wasn't keen on being catfished, but they had a good time on their date, and went back to Yi Jun's place together. I enjoyed their intimate scene, and liked the morning after even more. I think Yi Jun's feelings shifted a bit quickly, but we don't have a lot of time.

Episode 5

I'm sure Ha Ram has some convoluted BL reason for ignoring Yi Jun at work, but I hope it's just because he doesn't want them to get in trouble for being too affectionate at work.

Lol of course it was both. He was trying to respect Yi Jun by giving him the space he asked for, but also was feeling petty about making Yi Jun feel the nervousness of unrequited feelings.

Finally. I was waiting for the distinct queerness I sensed from this team in Our Dating Sim to come back. I love the direct communication they rely upon to strike at a queer nerve for me. So many of us accelerate the timeline of physical intimacy and don't slow down to build up the romance and friendship needed for a long-term relationship. I'm also like Yi Jun, in that I have a glass mentality and wiould want to take things slow with a new guy.

Rules are great! Boundaries are useful. Keep it secret at work. Excessive touch is off limits. Speak comfortably with each other.

Of course Ha Ram is going to push those limits.

I do like the couple conversations about changing the ways they address and speak to each other.

Also the penguin and polar bear imagery was cute. However, a polar bear would probably try to eat a penguin.

I hope that Work Wife succeeds in her training too, because it's time for things to go wrong. Yi Jun deleted Single Heaven, so it's time for their first major problem.

The first fight being over the couple tumblers is in line with this team's style of drama. I need to see the couple shirts.

Even though I don't like taking pictures that much, I do love when gay couples in dramas take them. We need to prove we existed.

Okay, the sweaters are cute. We don't get enough picnic dates in BL.

I'm actually excited to see them actually work together.

Lol he fell asleep immediately.

I like that Yi Jun doesn't seem sexually repressed. It's clear he likes Ha Ram, and is capable of saying it; he just has been hurt and wants to be careful with his love.

The Be Loved In House: I Do boys would approve of ignoring the whole bed in the room to cuddle on the floor. I like it because they don't want to be sexually intimate while they're in this phase.

The plant on the desk as a metaphor for the blossoming feelings is actually lovely. Ha Ram over-watered the plants at first, and now they're thriving.

The I ❤️ U birthday cake was cute.

I dating app for people who've experienced heartbreak is fascinating, and has me thinking about that AI therapist Bae Doona's character was talking to in The Silent Sea.

I like Yi Jun's smile a lot.

I kinda like the pool as their celebration activity. It's been clear that swimming is important for Ha Ram, and water can be healing.

Suddenly, a hot swimmer.

Oh, the swimmer is probably the ex that hurt Yi Jun. Excited for the major complication to come from work itself.

Alright! I enjoyed this week a lot! I was not really feeling Ha Ram on the front end because of how determined he was. Felt a little bit like the Prapai situation. Loving where we are right now, and looking forward to the ex seeking some form of redemption next week.

To my surprise people keep joining the stream. Usually it was only my friends and occasionally someone random that watched me play. Space strategy games are not the most audience-friendly. They require you to know a lot about the game mechanics, and they take a long while to play through a full campaign. This evening is different though. It had started with some "Lucy333" joining what must have been almost an hour ago. More than 30 minutes for sure. But over the past 10 minutes I've gotten 12 more viewers I think. Suddenly there is a coin sound effect and the chat stream lights up with a donation. $2 from Lucy333 and the text "Hey, spaceboy! Take your shirt off!"

I can instantly feel myself blushing. I'm flattered for a few milliseconds. I'm aware of the streams with girls showing lots of skin to get donations. I've never watched any of them. I'm not even aware of any with boys in them, but I know they exist. "Thanks for the donation, Lucy. This isn't that kind of stream though, clearly." I'm just playing for my mates when we don't feel like meeting up or doing something else. And I know I'm not a looker, though not shockingly ugly like Pete. Honestly, if there wasn't a pandemic going on we would probably do exactly the same thing anyway, playing space strategy and talk Marvel.

There is a flurry of responses from the newcomers in the chat. "Do it! Do it!" says one Donnatrix. "It could be that kind of stream," says fluffy2000. Soon my mates start cheering on as well. It basically turns into a dare. I'm not proud of my body, but I'm not ashamed of it either. It just is. Fuck it. I don't know what I'm going to be teased for more, if I take my shirt off, or if I don't. I reckon if I do what they ask for they have less ground to stand on. I set the game speed to low, say "Ok then", take off my headset, and pull off my T-shirt.

I'm met with a torrent of cheers in the chat. "Now it is that kind of stream," says fluffy. Donnatrix drops $5 and the comment "YAAAASSS". It feels weird. I can't decide if this is a group of sorority girls that randomly and sarcastically sexualize nerds, or if they are genuinely supportive.

"Thank y'all. Now back to trade route 14 to Zephyr-C". My emissary mission hasn't moved far at this speed. I'm about to increase the in-game speed when I get another $2 donation from Lucy. "Spaceboy, keep the game in slow mode and jump over to Heavenly Bodies."

At this game speed it would take hours before I need to take any action, and I'm already up a Whopper meal without having done anything, so I reckon I can play whatever they want me to play for a while. Who knew I was that easily bought? "I don't know what that is," I say into my headset.

A few seconds later Lucy sends me a private message with a TinyURL. "This better not mess with my game rig. If it's porn I'll switch back to the game." I say. "It could be that kind of stream too." fluffy offers in the chat. "He could use some porn tbh" my friend Mike responds. I click the link.

The browser loads something that looks like a web game. It's a character creation screen with a faceless, very neutral model on the screen. Looks like those posable figures you use when learning to draw. There are no controls, except a set of buttons that offers you to upload settings, import from Facebook, and similar. I click the Facebook one, click a few approvals, and a progress bar that only lasts a few seconds appears. When it is gone there is a 3D model of me on the screen. "Wow! This looks just like me." Whatever AI they have combing through my online photos managed to get almost everything right. I'm wearing some sort of speedos, but I don't own any, so that part was a miss, but the model looks spot on. "Whatever else they have in the game, I don't think they are going to top this."

A long list of sliders and customizations appear on the screen. It looks like an incredibly detailed character creation screen. I try moving the height controller and is met with a message box saying I'm out of credits, and that I need $10,000 to change my height to whatever I moved it to. Clearly not real money. "I can't change anything". Lucy responded I need to share it. I exit fullscreen on the game and move the browser over to my other screen so everyone on the stream can see. "No, you need to click the share button in the UI and post the link in the chat", Donnatrix writes.

A big gift-wrapped box appears in the corner of the game window. I click it and it presents the text "Hair color and style" with bold letters and below that a text message from Lucy "I think this will be cute on you." I click accept and the 3D model is updated with new hair. It's dark blonde or whatever the oxymoronic name is for it, instead of my usual rat brown hair. It's short on the sides and on top is a big swooping quiff. It looks utterly silly. "Thanks, nice one," I tell the stream. I see a lot of cheers coming in the chat, but I'm a bit perplexed about the "OMYFUCKING GDO!" from Mike. It's just silly hair.

Immediately a new gift box appears on the screen, and soon after a (2) is added on top of it, possibly indicating two gifts waiting. I find it a little bit cute that these girls are essentially playing with paper dolls, but digitally and modeled after someone real. I open the next gift, "Facial Features" from Julia_Awesome. I click accept again, and the doll on the screen is updated. Weirdly it felt like a flash of heat hit me, like those flame effects on concerts. The doll still looks like me, but pretty fictionalized. The face is much sharper, not just less fat, but probably also some bone structure changes as well. It's equally interesting and disheartening, like one of those really good mobile phone filter apps that makes you into a photo model. Makes you understand how unobtainable the Men's Health cover look really is. "Thank you, Julia, but I'm not sure about this look."

I'm ignoring the chat, though I see it is going bananas. I'll have to read that later when the stream is over. I open the next box. Another two has already arrived. This gift is from Donnatrix and is "Core Body", whatever that means. It feels like a gut punch. Perhaps not that, because it doesn't hurt, but it knocks the air out of me. Almost made me fall out of the chair. I'm confused about what is actually happening though because things don't make sense. My body looks deformed. It takes a moment before my brain stops associating what I see with HR Geiger's nightmarish paintings and start to understand what I really see. My body is suddenly a lot leaner and a hell of a lot more stacked than before. Proper abs muscles like a pan of Hawaii rolls.

I look up at the main screen for the first time in what feels like an eternity. The model on the screen looks ripped as well. How stupid can one person be? I turn to the side monitor and look at the window from the webcam. It's me, all new muscles, strong jaw, and a silly quiff on top.

"Hold up! Hold up! Hold up! This is insane! This isn't possible."

"lol, of course not" I see moving by in the chat. I go back to the program. Four more gifts waiting. I look at the model on the screen. I look at the webcam view. "Arms" says the next gift with the text "Promise to flex for me." Well, fuck Zephyr-C and trade route 14.

The iPhone 13 is faster, has a bigger battery, and gets a new camera sensor that captures more light (with support for new video features as well). And I thought now would be a good time to share my first impressions of the new iPhone 13.

Recycled design, underwhelming display

The display used on the iPhone 13 is, perhaps, the least exciting feature of the device. But I think it still deserves to be highlighted simply because of the upgrades that it has received over the 2020 model. Even with the ‘upgrades,’ note that the phone (still) lacks a high refresh rate display – a feature that is now common even on mid-range Androids. And this is glaringly obvious when you use the phone for the first time.

The OLED display used on the iPhone 13 is the same size as its predecessor. It measures 6.1 inches across and has a resolution of 1,170 x 2,532 pixels. One thing that is definitely noticeable is the notch used for the sensor array, which is now 20% smaller. That’s a significant size reduction.

However, not all apps are adapted to the new size, which causes some videos in 18:9 format to show a small tooth of the notch out of the indentation margin. That being said, watching videos on streaming services like Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime video was not a problem, and this issue was only noticeable on YouTube.

While the display still refreshes at 60Hz, I do admit that the OLED panel is of good quality and that it offers deep blacks. The iPhone 13’s display is also exceptionally bright. All this makes the usually mundane job of surfing the internet pretty exciting. Even without high refresh rate, it is a great screen to consume content.

The resized notch aside, very little has changed as far as the front of the iPhone 13 is concerned. In fact, the same can be said of the phone’s overall design, which is highly reminiscent of last year’s iPhone 12. This is by no means a negative thing, and on the contrary, this makes the phone – at least in my opinion – very beautiful and elegant. However, the increased battery capacity does make the phone a bit thicker and heavier than the iPhone 12 so forget using iPhone 12 cases on the iPhone 13.

The big exception is the camera module, which no longer brings the lenses aligned, but diagonally. This is due to the size of the wide-angle camera sensor, which is larger. I believe this is the fastest way to differentiate this year’s model from last year’s.

The iPhone 13 is also IP68 rated for water and dust resistance. In the past 24 hours, I also noticed that the glass-clad rear panel of the iPhone 13 is a massive fingerprint magnet.

Excellent performance, as always

The iPhone 13 totes Apple’s brand new A15 Bionic processor, which on paper claims to be 50% faster than the current leading competitor. The graphics performance also sees a boost and is now claimed to be 30% faster than its immediate rival. Our interpretation is that Apple is referring to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 here – which – as you know, is the most powerful processor in existence for Android smartphones.

Despite this claim, in day-to-day life, it isn’t easy to prove this. However, there is no denying that the iPhone 13 offers excellent performance. However, there is always this nagging feeling in the back of your mind about how ‘smoother’ the phone would have felt with a 120Hz display.

And one more thing.; in 2021, Apple has finally removed the 64 GB version of the phone. You can now only buy the phone in 128, 256, and 512 GB variants.

On the software front, the update to iOS 15 has brought more consistency to the system. It is easier to use the Safari browser, the Focus mode offers the possibility of having fewer interruptions, and FaceTime has expanded video conversations with people who do not own an Apple device. On the privacy front, features like Live Text, text, and image recognition are all done on the device itself without data being sent elsewhere.

Thanks to Apple A15 Bionic chip, the iPhone 13 now gets enhanced image processing capabilities, support for a bunch of AI-related features, and overall impressive performance in everyday tasks.

The main camera is the highlight

Besides performance and battery life, the iPhone 13 certainly stands because of its camera capabilities. More than that, we have more stability in videos thanks to Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) technology. In OIS by sensor shift, the camera sensor moves to compensate for minor shakes, thereby leading to smoother videos and better low-light shots.

On the software side, two features really caught my attention; Photo Styles and Cinema Mode. First of all, I must say that when opening the iPhone 13 camera, everything is really very intuitive. In the upper corner, you can quickly set the style of the photo, for warmer or vivid tones, or even higher contrast.

Cinema Mode, on the other hand, proved to be less complex than I expected – let’s face it, Apple’s presentation was really pompous in this regard. Simply put, this function allows you to change the focus of objects that appear in the foreground of a video. This can be done manually or automatically, and if, in the end, you want to change the result, you can do so using the iPhone’s editing app or an Apple software like Final Cut.

Cinema Mode is basically the bokeh effect for videos, and Apple has done a good job here!

iPhone 13’s front-facing camera is basically the same as the iPhone 12’s, and it does a good job. You also get the Photo Style feature which works great for FaceTime – which now offers the option for video calls with people who don’t own Apple devices.

Overall, the camera setup on the iPhone 13 is very good, although we don’t have the versatility found in the Pro line. The latter, as you might be aware, gets a telephoto camera in addition to other advanced features. The photos are sharp, with excellent contrast, and the post-processing is very well done by the software.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max was voted the best on a smartphone in our recent blind test. And that speaks volumes about the quality of the iPhone 13’s lens and sensor array, even if it doesn’t have the same versatility as Apple’s most advanced phone of 2020.

Battery is 15% larger

The battery of the iPhone 13 is bigger. To be precise, it is 15.1% bigger compared to the predecessor model. Apple claims that this difference is big enough for the iPhone 13 to last 2.5 hours more compared to its predecessor. Of course, this has had an impact on the design of the device, which is now thicker and a little heavier. However, most people will appreciate the gain in battery life over the addition of a few grams of weight.
